  • El Questro WA

El Questro Wilderness Park is considered to be one of the worlds most unique holiday destinations. p

Amid the vast and ancient landscape of Western Australia's East Kimberley region sits the untamed natural beauty of El Questro. El Questro is a destination unlike any other and offers the freedom to explore one of Australia's last true frontiers. From deep gorges and majestic ranges to thermal springs, mud and salt-flats, rainforests and cascading waterfalls, everything the Kimberley has to offer is located across the property's 700,000 acres and is why we say that El Questro is the heart of the Kimberley.

Location & Directions

El Questro is situated in the East Kimberley 110km west of Kununurra by road (58km on the sealed Great Northern Highway towards Wyndham, with the remainder on the graded gravel Gibb River Road).

We strongly recommend hiring a 4WD vehicle for the duration of your stay at El Questro giving you the opportunity to explore the property at your leisure. All major car rental companies have offices in Kununurra. Let our reservations staff arrange the hire for you. For up to date road conditions and information call 1800 013 314.

Here's how to plan a trip of a lifetime to El Questro Station

Time

Sprawling 283,000 hectares of wilderness, East Kimberley’s legendary El Questro encompasses charred orange sandstone gorges, palm-fringed thermal springs and some of the oldest rocks (and rock art) on the planet.

Fish for barramundi in locations accessible only by air, hike one of the many walking trails and marvel at the oh-so-picturesque Zebedee Springs. Whether you explore by helicopter, 4WD, horse or boat, this ancient landscape is so unique it will forever be etched on your psyche and soul.

The El Questro story

First established as a cattle station in 1903, Englishman Will Burrell and his Australian wife Celia, nee Shelmerdine, bought the pastoral lease in 1991 with a dream of showcasing El Questro to the world. They certainly achieved that goal. In 2021, the pastoral lease was bought by the G’day Group, which has spent millions on giving El Questro’s properties a refreshed look.

Accommodation at El Questro

El Questro offers many accommodation options for travellers to choose from, each with a unique ambience. You’ll find most adventurers stay at The Station where you can slumber in a family-friendly bungalow, a pre-erected tent with air con, plug in your caravan and either dine at the steakhouse and outdoor bar or cook at the camp kitchen.

Located nine kilometres down the track, The Homestead is a polished retreat set atop Chamberlain Gorge where guests soak up the rugged landscape with gourmet picnics packed by the chef.

The Black Cockatoo General Campground at El Questro’s main hub, The Station , boasts unpowered and powered sites, hot showers, camp kitchens with BBQs and laundry facilities. For those who like a bit more comfort, opt for a Station tent, which comes fully equipped with a cosy bed, power, towels, outdoor dining setting and air conditioning.

If you want to get off the beaten track, there are 30 private riverside sites along the Pentecost River about 10 minutes’ drive from The Station’s central facilities, which are available for use by all campers. Sizes of sites, shade and access to eco toilets vary, and these sites are not suitable for caravans.

The Station

Price: $$ – $$$

Next up on the comfort ladder after the pre-erected tents are the air-conditioned bungalows, each sleeping up to four people and featuring sleek ensuites and a back deck looking out onto the river.

The Gardenview Rooms, built from Kimberley river stone, sleep four or six and have large bathrooms and air con.

Emma Gorge

Price:  $$$

Some 25 kilometres away from The Station is Emma Gorge Resort,  hard up against a spectacular sandstone escarpment called Cockburn Ranges.

The resort has 60 safari-style tented cabins with ensuites, a gorgeous swimming pool and a very good restaurant. All tented cabins are powered and have fans (no air con), linen, towels and outdoor dining areas in the shade of shiny Boab trees.

The Homestead

Price:  $$$$$

Teetering on the edge of a cliff in the Kimberley’s rugged east, with mighty views over the Chamberlain Gorge, The Homestead has 10 suites with double king bedrooms. The tariff covers guided tours, minibar, gourmet meals and drinks, including wine, beer and cocktails. Additional charges apply for helicopter flights, private touring and transfers from Kununurra.

Breakfast is served on the verandah overlooking Chamberlain Gorge. Lunch and dinner is offered at a communal table under a shady awning. Guests can dine at a private location as an optional extra.

El Questro Wilderness Park experiences

Exploring El Questro Wilderness Park  in WA’s East Kimberley combines classic outback adventure with a splash of luxury.

A favourite among Kimberley hikers, Emma Gorge trail weaves its way through rocky terrain, which can make for slow going. The carrot at the end of this 1.6-kilometre hike is the glorious swimming hole beneath a waterfall – one of 10 waterfalls at El Questro.

Chamberlain Gorge

Take a Chamberlain Gorge river tour in a large boat to spot shy Charlie, the 4.5-metre resident saltwater crocodile, and equally shy rock wallabies among the towering escarpments. Less elusive are the archer fish that spit water to bring down insects as far as 3m away.

Heli Fishing

Head out on a fishing adventure with an El Questro guide either by Helicopter or in a 4WD. With a little local knowledge you can try your hand at catching a barra. All fishing gear, lunch and drinks are provided.

Zebedee Springs

An easy jaunt from the carpark, Zebedee Thermal Springs is a beautiful spot where you can bathe in warm water pools surrounded by lush vegetation. Exclusive use of Zebedee Springs is offered to Homestead guests every afternoon.

Explosion Gorge

Set off on a bone-rattling 17-kilometre drive from The Station to Explosion Gorge, part of the Chamberlain Gorge system. The track follows the beginning of the Elgee Cliffs escarpment and along the way there are several access tracks, which take you to waterholes, remote fishing areas and Branko’s Lookout.

Branco’s Lookout

A stunning location to take in sunset, Branco’s Lookout was named after Branko Raicevic, a Wyndham local who served as a councillor and shire president for the town.

Pentecost River

The Pentecost River passes through El Questro Wilderness Park and makes an ideal place for camping. It is famed as one of the best spots in the area to go barramundi fishing.

Buddy’s Point

Can there be a more perfect way to finish a Kimberley day than with cheese and bubbles at this private 360-degree lookout? Buddy’s Point was named in honour of El Questro legend Buddy Tyson, a former rodeo champion, cattle drover and tour guide who was renowned for his ability to spin a good yarn.

Miri Miri Falls

Jump in a helicopter and zoom off to a remote corner of El Questro where you will find Miri Miri – a spring-fed waterfall cascading over a 50-metre drop.

How to get to El Questro

The 110-kilometre drive from Kununurra is on mostly sealed roads. Kununurra Airport is served by Qantas, Air North and Virgin from all major Australian cities via Darwin, Broome and Perth. El Questro operates twice daily scheduled road transfers from Kununurra and it is also possible to charter a light plane or helicopter and hire 4WD vehicles.

You will need a 4WD to get into El Questro Station.

Can you take a caravan to El Questro?

El Questro does recommend off-road caravans and campers, but many other caravans do make the trip into The Station. There is a 16-kilometre unsealed section with two water crossings that are about 300-500mm in depth.

Best time of year to visit

The winter months of June to August. The property is closed during the wet season, November to April.

A True Wilderness Experience

There’s so much to see and do at El Questro, a visit to the 700,000-acre property combining station township and wilderness park is like a holiday within your holiday! From natural thermal springs to lush gorges and waterfalls, you’ll find an extensive range of tours, experiences and activities to keep every member of the family happy. Accommodation options range from high end luxury at the exclusive all-inclusive Homestead to well-appointed bungalows and safari-style tented cabins. Boasting three separate dining outlets, and a well-stocked store at the Station Township, it’s a great place to either self-cater, or indulge in meals crafted from the finest local ingredients.

We love El Questro for its ability to deliver a genuine Outback experience to every visitor, regardless of age, ability or budget.

We like to think we’re the number one ambassador for the delights of the Kimberley, but El Questro scores a close second place. There’s nothing comparable to its versatility when it comes to showcasing the region’s natural wonders and attractions from a well-equipped, traveller-friendly centralised location.

Celebrated by adventure seekers and nature lovers for its ancient gorges, waterfalls and rockpools, rivers and creeks, and many vantage points and lookouts to absorb the breathtaking panorama, El Questro is the perfect mix of accommodation and adventure. Here you can pace your days as fast or as slow as you like and handpick activities and tours that align with your Kimberley wish list goals. With an extensive list of attractions to discover, a day’s exploration could see you hiking through dramatic gorges, swimming in a genuine waterhole oasis shaded by lush vegetation, horseback riding through wild, untamed countryside, fishing for barramundi, or cruising tranquil waters to visit Aboriginal rock painting sites and spot some of El Questro’s 100 species of birds, and many other unique flora and fauna.

El Questro nights are the time to either enjoy a first class meal outdoors, an intimate restaurant environment, cook up the barra you caught and swap stories around the campfire under a billion stars, or retreat to the seclusion and serenity of your accommodation after a night of live music at The Swinging Arm Bar.

Add El Questro to your itinerary for a taste of everything The Kimberley has to offer under one sprawling roof:

  • Chamberlain Gorge
  • Zebedee Springs
  • Explosion Gorge
  • Branco’s Lookout
  • Pentecost River
  • Station Township
  • Buddy’s Point
  • Miri Miri Falls
  • Cockburn Range
  • El Questro Gorge
  • Amaroo Falls
  • The Lost City

Don’t miss …

Emma Gorge is set between the towering sandstone cliffs of the Cockburn Range. Take a self-guided one-hour hike through the gorge and be rewarded at the end with a pristine waterfall that plunges into a refreshing rock pool. Take a once in a lifetime helicopter flight over the station, choose from scenic flights, private waterfall adventures or exclusive sunset picnic flights. Don’t leave El Questro without bathing in the soothing, thermal waters of Zebedee Springs. The unique chain of pools maintains a consistent temperature of around 32°C and are an easy stroll through the shade of Livistona and Pandanus palms. Top Tip: Head to Zebedee Springs to bathe in thermal pools in the morning, as it is closed to the public in the afternoon.

For many an intrepid voyager, it is the eastern gateway to the famous Gibb River Road, much travelled by the 4WD, caravan and camping fraternity.

There is truly much to see and do:

Ultimate guide to exploring the El Questro Wilderness Park

Travel & Touring  |  WA Destinations

By: Tatum Stafford

Sprawling across nearly one million acres, the El Questro Wilderness Park encompasses thermal springs, salt flats, deep gorges, rainforests and some of the most unique landscapes Western Australia has to offer.

Located just over an hour’s drive from Kununurra , this remarkable park can be explored by foot, four-wheel drive or air. But for first-time visitors, its remoteness and the sheer volume of natural attractions can be overwhelming, so a well-planned trip is essential.

Here's a comprehensive guide of things to do, places to stay, and things you’ll need to know before venturing through the majestic El Questro.

What you'll need to know

A day pass or 7-day visitor permit is required to enter the park. Permit prices are capped at $22 for adults and $11 for children, and will be automatically added to your park accommodation booking if you book through El Questro’s website.

There’s no phone reception in the park, but payphones are available at all three of the park’s resorts. WiFi can also be purchased in public areas at the resorts.

Basic items including groceries, camping supplies, gas bottle refills and petrol are available at El Questro Station.

Top things to see and do

Explore beautiful gorges

Emma Gorge is one of the park’s most impressive and accessible gorges. The walk to reach it is 3.2km long and involves some rock scrambling, water crossings and a few steep inclines. The water at Emma Gorge is typically quite cold, so after a dip head to the thermal springs to the right of the waterhole to warm up.

Another of the park’s most popular gorges is its namesake, El Questro Gorge. This is a trickier trail to complete, as it involves a few large rocks and steep inclines to reach the crystal-clear plunge pool and waterfall. It can take up to five hours return, but the views of surrounding livistona palms and red rock gorge walls are well worth it.

Other gorge highlights include the plunge pool at Amalia Gorge (best visited in April or May before it dries up), and the waterlily-filled Moonshine Gorge.

Fish for barramundi

El Questro’s pristine waters are brimming with barramundi – and with a little local knowledge, you should have no trouble catching them. There are a few tour itineraries to choose from, but the Guided Barramundi 4WD Fishing Tour is a good starting point. Accompanied by an expert fishing guide, you’ll fish for barramundi on the banks of the Chamberlain or Pentecost River.

If you’d rather explore some of the park’s more remote fishing holes, opt for the 5-hour version of the same tour. You’ll cast a line at a secluded spot along the Pentecost River where your catch could include anything from barramundi and threadfin salmon to black bream and catfish. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep an eye out for estuarine crocodiles and sea eagles, which are both common sightings here.

Soak in Zebedee Springs

Nestled beneath shady pandanus trees and livistona palms, the lush Zebedee Springs are comprised of several thermal pools, small waterfalls and hot springs. As the spring water sits between 28 and 32 degrees year-round, it’s an ideal spot for a morning dip.

The springs are one of the park’s most popular attractions, so aim to arrive early (before 8am) to avoid missing out. They’re open from 7am to 12pm every day, but rangers will restrict entry if there are too many cars onsite. Guests staying at The Homestead can enjoy daily private visits from 2:30pm to 5pm.

Go four-wheel driving

El Questro’s four-wheel drive tracks provide a gateway to some of the park’s most impressive and less-explored landscapes. The Pigeon Hole four-wheel drive track is a popular route with some steep sections, sweeping views of the surrounding ranges, and an excellent waterhole for fishing.

More experienced four-wheel drivers will enjoy the 7km Saddleback Ridge round trip. Departing from El Questro Station, this challenging route travels over rocky landscapes and steep hills out into the Pentecost Valley. A drive to the top of the ridge will reveal remarkable 360-degree views of the park.

Hit a hiking trail

Most of El Questro’s attractions are accessible via easy walk trails, but avid hikers can also opt for some of the park’s more challenging tracks. If you have previous bushwalking experience, the 4.8km Champagne Springs trail is a great starting point. Renowned for its rocky terrain, this difficult track is well worth the effort thanks to the cascading waterfall and cooling pools that sit at the trail’s end.

Cruise through a gorge at sunset

Only accessible by boat, Chamberlain Gorge stretches over 3km and provides scenic views of surrounding flora, fauna and red rock gorge walls. Daily tours of the gorge depart in the late afternoon, and feature a frenzied fish feeding session where you’ll have the chance to see archerfish, catfish and barramundi up close. Don't forget your camera.

Where to stay

There are a variety of accommodation options within the park, ranging from luxury rooms at The Homestead to family-style campgrounds. Top-of-the-range suites at The Homestead start from $3,200 per night and include gourmet drinks and meals, as well as guided tours to Chamberlain Gorge, Zebedee Springs, the lookout at Buddy’s Point and more.

Rooms at El Questro Station and Emma Gorge start from $450 and $350 per night respectively. El Questro Station offers air-conditioned river view rooms with plenty of facilities, whereas Emma Gorge hosts safari-style tented cabins with en-suites.

For campers, there are two camping areas within the park: Black Cockatoo Campground and the private camp sites at El Questro Station. Private sites at El Questro Station start at $41 per night, and unpowered sites at Black Cockatoo start at $33 per night.

How to get there

If driving , the most direct way to reach the park is via Kununurra. From here, it’s approximately 110km west (just over an hour’s drive) to reach El Questro Station via the Great Northern Highway and a sealed section of the Gibb River Road . Though access to El Questro is mainly via sealed roads, there are sections of the Gibb and the gravel driveway into El Questro Station that are unsuitable for two-wheel drives, so four-wheel drives are recommended.

Alternatively, El Questro operates twice-daily road transfer services from Kununurra airport and select accommodation spots within the Kununurra town centre. View the road transfer schedule online , and note you’ll need to book your seat in advance. Transfers outside of scheduled times can also be arranged if required.

If you’d rather arrive by air , helicopter rides and charter flights are also available.

A first-timer's guide to El Questro

By Julia D’Orazio

El Questro Wilderness Park is a biologically blessed wonderland containing some of the world’s most ancient landscapes. This East Kimberley utopia – filled with gorges, waterfalls, thermal springs, forests, and craggy peaks – is considered one of Earth’s last great wilderness frontiers. These stunning billion-year-old formations, 110km west of Kununurra, are cocooned within the red sandstone Cockburn Range, which soars 600m over the savannah.

Sounds impressive, perhaps overwhelming, to think this 700,000-acre working cattle station is peppered with beautiful sceneries of epic proportions. The legendary Gibb River Road passes through the park, making it one of the country’s scenic road trip destinations. But how to make the most of this adventure playground? Whether on a tight budget or ready to splurge, strap on the hiking boots, hit the road on a 4WD adventure safari, or go horseback, there are many ways to experience this remarkable yet remote destination.

Let us guide you on how to make the most of your time at El Questro.

How to access El Questro

El Questro is divided into two sections and can be accessed from two entrances located along the eastern sealed section of the Gibb River Road. The first entrance, 58km west of Kununurra, via a 2km gravel highway, leads to Emma Gorge , home to its namesake gorge and A-frame cabin accommodation. Please note: A small river crossing may not be accessible for 2WD vehicles, so it is advised to park and walk the remaining 300m to the resort.

The second section, El Questro Station , is 28km west of Emma Gorge. A 16km gravel road to the main hub can only be accessed with 4WDs and high-clearance vehicles. There are two river crossings along the way, with water levels fluctuating depending on what time of year you visit. Before your visit, call ahead to find out the level of the river crossing to determine if your vehicle can go the distance!

This entrance is the gateway to The Station, offering campgrounds, powered tents, family bungalows, lodging alongside foot outlets, a bar and a tour booking office. Further on is the exclusive El Questro homestead overlooking the almighty Chamberlain Gorge. The luxurious accommodation is all-inclusive and for adults only.

What food outlets are there at El Questro?

The Station is the social heart of El Questro. Its main hub – a countryside stone and timber building – features a reception, tour desk, convenience store, gallery and happy hour hotspot, Swinging Arm Bar. The area has plenty of outdoor seating festooned by shade cloths and fairy lights, making it a gorgeous place to unwind at all hours.

You’ll always be entertained; watch scenic flights take off on the nearby helicopter pad, musicians take to the stage, or nestle by the campfire under a starry sky. Grab a bite at Cantina, offering affordable pub eats or head to The Steakhouse Restaurant, offering an a la carte menu.

Over at Emma Gorge, dine at Emma’s Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and has a licensed bar.

Top things to do in El Questro

El Questro is home to six self-guided walking trails, ranging in distance and difficulty. Each hike provides different rewards – whether swimming in a natural pool in a gorge, relaxing your muscles in a thermal spring, or clambering boulders to get a magnificent panorama – the workout is always worth it.

Most hikes are a short drive from The Station. The famous Emma Gorge trail is located at – you guessed it – Emma Gorge. This hike is a moderate level of difficulty with some rugged creek crossings. However, there are plenty of other walks to choose from, including some less challenging ones. Leave early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat.

Check out the six hiking trails here . Make sure to pack sufficient water before you hike!

Swim at stunning Emma Gorge

Emma Gorge is a secluded oasis. Its ‘holy grail’ – a natural pool surrounded by a trickling waterfall and lush ferns climbing its soaring cliffs – attracts many to venture to one of the region’s greatest natural assets. But before you get to the good part, it takes a grade-four climb and roughly an hour to reach the Insta-famous setting. And what better way to reward your hard legwork than to submerge yourself in nature’s pool, with Emma Falls providing a smoothing soundtrack?

Top tip: Bliss out in the thermal springs on the pool’s right-hand side.

Chamberlain River Cruise

The Chamberlain River Cruise is an affordable way to experience the splendours of the region’s ancient gorges. The 1.5-hour cruise journeys a small section of the 150 km-long river and includes a glass of wine and snacks.

Frugal Frolicker

El Questro Gorge Hopping in the Kimberley Outback

It’s been two months now since I began working at El Questro Wilderness Park in the Kimberley . Other than the fact that it was in the Australian Outback and likely rife with myriad outdoor adventures, I knew almost nothing about this place before accepting the job offer. It was one of those instances where you just feel in your gut that it’s right, and so you instinctively take that leap into the unknown without thinking – without researching, planning, deliberating.

If I had to sum up El Questro in a word, it would be GORGES. You come to El Questro Wilderness Park to see the gorges: to hike to them, cruise through them, swim in them, marvel at them.

I still maintain that you needn’t do much research before deciding to visit this amazing land, but in case you take to Google: here’s what the gorges at El Questro look like.

Table of Contents

Chamberlain Gorge

Chamberlain Gorge, the Kimberley

This gorge is best seen by boat, as there aren’t any hiking trails around it. Chambo is El Questro’s most popular tour because it’s affordable, accessible, and only requires a couple hours of your day. Not to mention, of course, the beautiful scenery it promises. Depending on the day, there might be a breakfast cruise and/or a mid-afternoon cruise offered. Both feed you champagne, but the early morning tour also includes bacon and egg rolls with your bottomless mimosa. (Can you guess which tour I opted to take?)

Chamberlain Gorge at El Questro

The Chamberlain Gorge cruise is a slow boat ride that feels a bit more commercial than the smaller Explosion Gorge cruise (see below), but it’s still well worth doing – particularly if your time and money are limited. You might even pass by a freshwater crocodile in the gorge like we did! (unfortunately I was too far away to get a decent photo)

Explosion Gorge

Explosion Gorge at El Questro

Explosion Gorge is the other gorge at El Questro that requires a boat trip because it can’t really be hiked to. It’s currently run as a joint tour that includes the gorge cruise followed by sunset drinks and snacks at the spectacular Branco’s Lookout nearby.

When I first arrived, I asked all my fellow staff for suggestions on what to do first, and almost unanimously they implored me to hop on the Explosion Gorge tour. Between the significantly smaller group size and the more enclosed gorge walls, it felt much more intimate than the Chamberlain Gorge cruise (see above). I still remember how it felt to look straight up the gorge, noting the trees growing out of the rock walls and the discolored marks left from when water flowed down them during past wet seasons; to sit in the dinghy in silence observing an exotic native bird launch itself across the gorge. Explosion Gorge is such a special place – if you’re going to splash out for one paid activity at El Questro, this should be it.

Explosion Gorge at El Questro

The cruise wraps up by late afternoon, in time to catch the sunset from Branco’s Lookout. This season there’s been a massive saltwater crocodile hanging out in the river below, though we didn’t spot him when we were there. But man, the view of the river junction below is just unreal, sunset or not.

Branco's Lookout at El Questro

Moonshine Gorge

Moonshine Gorge at El Questro

The Moonshine Gorge circuit is the easiest gorge hike at El Questro. There’s minimal incline and hardly any rock scrambling. The only remotely challenging bits are the creek crossings, but even those are pretty easy to tackle, especially later in the season when water levels are low.

Kimberley Australia

It may not present much of a physical challenge, but Moonshine makes for a nice little jaunt over the saddle and along the creek amidst the livistona palms. At a steady pace, you could complete the loop in about an hour – but allow more time to enjoy the great swimming holes along the way.

Amalia Gorge

Amalia Gorge at El Questro

They say Amalia Gorge is best done just after the wet season, while the waterfall is still flowing at the main gorge pool. However, I can vouch for its awesomeness smack in the middle of the dry season.

Amalia Gorge hike at El Questro

The first half of the trail is quite rocky, but on mostly level ground. After you reach the first pool, things get a little trickier if you decide to carry on to the main gorge pool. There are a couple points where you need to hug a rock wall in order to get along the trail, which always makes me nervous when I’m carrying my camera bag. But just take your time and it’s totally doable without incident.

I think the best part of the whole Amalia Gorge hike is the view you have once you climb up from the first pool and look down on it. In my mind, it’s the picture-perfect Australian frame with just the right proportions of blue, green, and orange.

Amalia Gorge hike at El Questro

The walk to Amalia Gorge takes about an hour each way; longer if you stop to swim. In my experience, the water here is the coldest of any gorge pools at El Questro – and it’s also got some funky-looking green stuff on the surface in some parts. Maybe not too appealing for a swim, but I think it added a little something to my photos.

Emma Gorge at El Questro

Behold, the most renowned of El Questro’s gorges and one of the most famous gorges in all of the Kimberley. The trail to Emma Gorge is probably the least scenic of any of the gorge hikes, but it hardly matters because it’s so short and leads to, well, this:

Emma Gorge at El Questro

No matter how cold the pool is, you’ll want to swim across to the waterfall at the other end, if only to be able to lay on your back and look straight up at the gorge walls. I had one of those rare *holy f$&% am I really here right now?* moments doing just this. You can admire it standing on the edge of the pool, but you really feel the magic of Emma Gorge when you’re in the middle of it.

Emma Gorge at El Questro

Pro tip: be sure to swim behind the boulders on the immediate right side of the pool. Because HOT SPRINGS. One time I hiked to Emma and there were hoards of people there but zero of them knew about the lovely bath-like water behind these rocks.

Emma Gorge, El Questro

The walk to Emma is quick and rocky: it’ll take about a half hour if you’re fit and don’t stop along the way, but much longer if you want to take the rocks slowly. Aim to arrive at the gorge as early as you can because come 9am, families and tour groups will invade.

El Questro Gorge

El Questro Gorge

The hike to El Questro Gorge is the most difficult of all the recommended walks at El Questro. Those who aren’t up for such a challenge can opt to hike only to the Halfway Pool (1.5-2 hours return) – this part’s a cinch, and doesn’t require an exceptional level of fitness.

But I promise you, the second half of this hike is well worth the effort. You’ll start off by crossing the Halfway Pool in waist-deep water, then shimmying your way up the boulder to get back onto the trail. Sounds daunting, right? But you’ll be totally fine if you take it slow, keep your electronics in a dry bag, and hold your backpack above the water as you cross the pool. It helps if you have someone to pass your bag to once you get to the boulder, that way you can climb up with free hands. Or, you can just toss your bag up onto it and then climb.

El Questro Gorge

The second half of the El Questro Gorge trail follows the creek through the gorge. Some parts of it are straight rock scrambling, with no footpath to be found. Just follow the trail markers and you’ll find your way okay.

But really, though: this part of the trail is SO ROCKY. You will be climbing boulders and hopping across rocks for most of the way. Shoes with good traction and ankle support are a must. If you’re a seasoned hiker and/or rock climber, it’ll feel like a playground.

All this effort will be worth it once you reach Mac Micking Pool at the end. It’s small, clear, blue, cold but not freezing – and there’s a good chance you’ll have it all to yourself. Highly recommend swimming out to the waterfall and jumping into the pool from the rocks below it.

The entire El Questro walk should take 4.5-5 hours return, excluding stops and swims.

El Questro Gorge hike

Note that I toured these gorges free of charge as a staff member at El Questro Wilderness Park. The opinions expressed in this blog post do not reflect those of Delaware North – as per usual, they are solely my own.

El Questro Gorges

Frugal Facts

As of August 2015 — The following gorge cruises are offered at El Questro Wilderness Park:

  • Chamberlain Gorge – the cruise costs AU$65 and lasts about 1.5 hours.
  • Explosion Gorge – the joint cruise and sunset tour costs AU$130 and lasts about 4 hours.

Note that you can also hire a boat to tour these gorges independently.

The other gorges mentioned here can be toured independently on foot, or by booking a tour or gorge walk. Prices/availability vary by gorge, demand, and season.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called el questro station.

Many people are curious about the name ‘El Questro’ – what it means and where it originated. El Questro was named in 1958 by Torrance McMicking, who claimed the land, but its meaning remains a mystery. What is clear is El Questro Station is a magical, ancient landscape offering unique and wonderful experiences to all who visit.

What kind of wildlife is El Questro Station home to?

Over 100 species of birds can be found throughout El Questro Station, along with mammals, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates. Visitors might spot crocodiles, pythons, frilled neck lizards or fruit bats along with an abundance of archerfish and barramundi.

When is the best time of year to visit El Questro Station?

The best time to visit El Questro Station is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this time, the weather is mild, with warm days and cool nights, and there is little to no rainfall. The dry season is also the best time for outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing, as the water levels in the rivers and creeks are lower and the roads are more accessible. However, it's worth noting that the dry season is also the most popular time to visit, so it can be busy. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (April/May or September/October), but be prepared for higher temperatures and the chance of rainfall.

Seriously now, how it is even possible to have a girl in the tickets issuing white building , in the Gorky Park Pier, who is exceptional RUDE and she doesn't know even a simple word of English and she seem that she doesn't care to sell any tickets to tourists ?! We left the ticket office because she couldn't answer to anything and because she was really aggressive because we don't speak Russian!!! Despite the fact that we were really kind and smiling, trying to speak to her. We found completely unacceptable the fact that they work with tourists but they demand from them to know Russian! Even though, a kind and gently mannered person will find a way to explain something. Unfortunately the specific ...lady was a savage-like one, coming from the mountains and never having met other people again. What a shame.

Dear Efstathios D! Thank you for your feedback! First of all we are so sorry about this situation! Next time we are highly recommend to purchas tickets online/ Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Starting out for an 8:00 p.m. cruise on a poor or rather dull August 1st day, we had to wait for a later boarding at about 20:15! We were shepherded upstairs to the upper deck, which was thankfully enclosed with glass windows, with seats facing both forward and backwards or better… fore and aft facing! As we reached the top deck (about 7 steps, but steep) we walked about 6 meters and had to jog to the right, in order not to disturb a mic boom and speaker setup, denoting our impending entertainment for the evening! 2 chairs, padded, adorned with 2 very well used 6-string guitars… plus a load of other equipment, including 5' high speakers and amps, etc. My party (4 of us) including my wife, her half-sister with her husband, whom we had only known about 14 months, after belatedly finding out about each other, who were visiting us from a European country for a few days! Super people! My wife had arranged this trip at the tentative request of her half-brother-in-law. The boat was nothing special as far as comfort was concerned, but we had front seats! I was a little worried about volume from the massive speakers! No worry needed! We left, with perhaps one third full of passengers only and the 2 chairs were almost immediately occupied by 2 men, pleasant looking, both nicely dressed, who picked up the guitars and the first, Dmitry, began to narrate our passage along the Moscow River. Shortly afterwards, the narration comfortable allowed the introduction of the first song, with basic chords being played by Dmitry with Alexei playing, expert accompaniment to Dmitry's vocals. He thoroughly enjoyed his role, as did Dmitry. For 21/2 hours, we plied the river, with an ever deepening dusk, bringing forth romantic Russian songs by well-known Russian composers, making the river trip a really enjoyable experience, particularly as both my wife and I are both fans of this type of music along with our newly-found family. The engine noises could hardly be heard, the cabin was pleasantly warm, but not hot, and tea and coffee was served an hour before landing. Docking happened at about 22:20 with no rush and we alighted at the same point that we had boarded… a very enjoyable evening all told! Thank you Moscow River Tours or Art_Stolitsa!

Dear granmar! Thank you for your feedback! We will be happy to see you again. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

It’s very bad that when we enter the boat they told us go upstairs! Then a russian guiding started to talk from the starting point! No respect to other nationalities or tourists languages! At least do something in international languages! My money went for nothing Understand nothing in this beautiful country’s History!!!!!!

Dear Mrmretta! Thank you for your feedback! It is helps us to be better. We will start our English speaking guided cruise soon. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Loud music. No service. Look like that they did not want to sell anything. Taste less food. Exhaust in the resturant. No safety informasjon. Cheap tour Cheap food. Crappy service. Try some other place.

Dear Tore S! Thank you for your review. It helps us become better. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

Today we decided to do a river cruise to orientate us to Moscow. With no knowledge of Russian we purchased an audio guide. We walked 9kms in very hot weather to get to the departure point and asked several people for directions. Number one frustration is that muscovites don't get tourism or customer service and look straight thru you. We finally found the wharf and with several boats departing we got the same 'look straight through you' until finally we had to shame someone into finding our boat the Cahta Mapnr, which then departed 35 mins later then the booking agent advised. We went to the top deck which had no cover and tried to find some shade. And you guessed it the audio didn't work. The staff had no idea how to handle a disgruntled passenger and i got nowhere asking for a refund. Go back to the booking agent they said to which i replied ' how would they know i didnt get what i paid for. I have worked in tourism for most of my working life so know a bit about the industry. You have a wonderful product but you must train your operators! There was one young man,Bec, who tried valiantly to placate me and he will go far. I admit I lost my cool after being ignored by so many and frying in the hot sun and not being able to identify the magnificent buildings..

Dear Julie B! Thank you for your feedback! First of all we are so sorry about this situation! Next time we are highly recommend to purchas tickets online. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

No tour info in English. Mostly Russians on this boat. We were the only non-Russian tourists. If you don't buy the ticket online, they charge more than double the price at the pier. (If you are looking at a tablet or computer screen you will see this info, but not on a phone screen.) As a result many customers were complaining and arguing with the ticket sellers. The boat was playing LOUD unbearably awful music. Website stated that music would be played and we were expecting Russian folk tunes with balalaikas. Instead, we got really bad rock with English lyrics. The cruise was 2+ hours and it would have been impossible to enjoy with the noise. It was so bad that we asked for our money back before the boat departed. They said they could not provide a refund because the tickets had been torn already. After we caused a minor insurrection --luckily we had a Russian friend with us -- the captain turned off the music. (He said he didn't like it either but he was required to play it.) There are numerous river tour companies in Moscow and most seem to be in the same price range. I recommend asking them if the boats have outdoor shaded places where you will not be subjected to loud music.

Dear JanetOO! Thank you for your feedback! On our website we have all information in English. Best regards, Rivertickets.ru

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
