5. Gorgeous Outfit

London nightlife has made history since the times of Charles Dickens and The Beatles. It is absolutely not to be missed and there are countless amazing restaurants, pubs, clubs, and theatre opportunities to check out.

I suggest bringing at least one really killer outfit that you feel comfortable walking in, as you will more than likely be taking the tube and walking a fair bit. I love this jumpsuit because it’s inexpensive, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and looks stunning on many different body types.

These towels provide instant relief and the effect lasts for 30-60 minutes. To extend the benefit, I just wet the towel, wring out, and wrap it around my neck for cooling comfort.

If you care to indulge in the British pub scene, it’s something to behold. You should definitely check out local drinking holes like ‘Experimental Cocktail Club,’ ‘Nine Lives,’ and roof-top views like ‘12th Knot.’ But be sure to start (or end) your night with some hangover-prevention pills.

UK fashion tends to be a bit dressier in most areas – London is a good example of this. Most places you’ll visit will be ones in which you’ll want to look nice. Spring is a season of great variation in weather in Great Britain. One day may be warmer and sunny, while the next could be rainy and overcast. Tourism is light during this season, so if you can handle the weather it’s a great time to visit.

Plan to be prepared for anything with regard to your wardrobe: cute layers (think nice cardigans and shirts ) and a dependable rain coat , just in case rains interrupt your day. Temperatures average around 45°F to 60°F (7°C to 15°C).

SUMMER – June, July, August:

Summers are delightfully mild in London. Rains can happen so it’s still best to plan accordingly. For the most part, summer travelers will enjoy easy conditions, which is why this is also the height of tourist season.

FALL – September, October, November:

This is the rainiest part of the year in London. Tourists during this time of year will enjoy smaller crowds, but will need to pack for a wet trip! Umbrella , scarves , fashionable raincoat , and boots are a good idea. Temperatures average around 55°F to 65°F (12°C to 18°C).

WINTER – December, January, February:

Temperatures are milder here in the winter than in many parts of the world, and rain is also common in this season. Snow is not unheard of, so be sure to pack warm clothes such as: heavier waterproof coats , hats and gloves , and scarves if you’ll be traveling during this time! Temperatures average around 40°F to 50°F (4°C to 10°C).

Parks & Picnic – London has many beautiful parks all over the city and a favorite pastime for Londoners is picnicking and Pimm’s (a very popular summer drink). Some of the best parks include Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, and the Crystal Palace. Wear dark colors that won’t stain if you sit on the grass. Fitted jeans or shorts and t-shirt are the best options for both men and women. Also, don’t forget to bring a nice pair of shades.

Museums – The majority of museums in London are free to visit. The British Museum, National Gallery, and Victoria and Albert Museum can’t be missed! Dress smart in fitted clothing and avoid t-shirts with graphics. Trousers and cardigans are a good choice. Also, bring a pashmina or scarf in case it is cool inside.

What NOT to Take to London and the U.K.

1. don’t pack lots of electronics.

I recommend packing your phone, a Kindle , and maybe a laptop, but don’t bring much more than that. It’s not worth the risk of bringing unnecessary electronics and having them lost or stolen.

2. DON’T BRING too many/heavy items

The one exception here is winter clothes. If you’re going during the colder months, you will definitely need them. Otherwise, save yourself the luggage fees – and the back pain!

3. DON’T TAKE hiking-style gear

While this stuff is certainly appropriate for outdoor sports in the UK, and you may need it if you’re on a more extensive trip that includes hiking, it’s otherwise pointless to have in London, and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

4. DON’T PACK anything that screams “hapless tourist!”

Please leave your fanny packs, money belts, and I love New York t-shirts at home. Likewise, decking yourself out in Union Jack or American flag paraphernalia is just not done here. They’re not as obsessed with either flag as we seem to be.

5. DON’T TAKE hairdryers

These eat up a good deal of space in your luggage and most hostels/hotels have them on hand for guests anyway.

6. DON’T BRING valuable or irreplaceable items

This is a no-brainer. Leave your expensive and irreplaceable things at home to avoid the risk of loss, theft, or damage.

1. what is a good basic daily budget for london.

Even budget travelers will easily find themselves coming in at over $100 per day. All those Tube rides add up and it’s hard to find a hostel dorm bed in a central spot for less than $30. If you plan on staying in a private hotel room, expect to pay a lot more for the privilege. Admissions to popular attractions like the Tower of London can also be pretty pricey.

The good news here is that most of the local parks, some of them famous in their own right, are free to the public. So are the major museums in town, such as the British Museum.

2. Do I need to tip in London restaurants?

When purchasing takeaway or drinks at the pubs, you aren’t expected to leave a tip. The rules are slightly different in sit-down restaurants. It’s becoming standard practice to leave 10% of your total bill or just the change if you didn’t order much.

Wait staff in most of Europe, including Britain, are paid minimum wage by law so they’re not completely dependent on tips like their American counterparts. However, don’t let your generosity run away with you. Check your bill first. Some places will automatically put a so-called service charge on your tab. This is the equivalent of a prepaid tip, but you don’t have to pay it if your service was bad or you feel it’s unfairly high.

Of course, feel free to leave as much as you like for excellent service. Just keep in mind that American sized tips of 20% or more are considered exorbitant in England. Likewise, if you want to make sure the waiters keep the money for themselves, it is best to hand them cash even if you’re paying with a card.

3. When’s the best time to visit London?

In general, the spring is a great time to visit most of Europe. This includes London, particularly if you were planning on stopping at places like Kew Gardens to see the flowers in full bloom. Although warmer and drier weather is far more likely in the summer, you’re going to pay for it with higher prices and larger crowds in popular spots.

I hate cold weather so I’d probably never come to England in the depths of winter. But I definitely think that it’s worth dealing with a few overcast days to have relatively quiet travel conditions. Of course, your own thoughts may vary on that score.

4. What are my transportation options for getting to/from London from the nearby airports?

Where it is possible to use either the Tube or the Express Trains, those are your best options. If you’re not in a hurry or money is tight, taking the bus is also perfectly fine. However, taxis aren’t recommended because they’re both expensive and time-consuming.

5. What if I don’t particularly like fish and chips, can I still find decent food to eat?

Yes! Although I personally wouldn’t skip that particular dish, English food has changed a lot in recent years and become more than just your typical pub grub. There are plenty of different cuisine styles available in London and many of them are even at reasonable prices.

However, if you’re pressed for cash, try the French chain Pret-a-Manger. It’s basically like the European version of Panera Bread. I am now hooked on their pickle sandwiches (about £3).

6. Are there any areas of London that I should avoid?

Like any major city, London has its fair share of petty crime but the city center is generally considered a very safe place to visit. Just hold on to your belongings and make sure your luggage is secure at all times (even in your hostel room) to avoid any issues.

7. Can you suggest some good day trips from London?

Oxford, Bath, Cambridge, and Brighton seem to be the ones most commonly mentioned. I personally enjoyed Bath a great deal. It’s a beautiful spa town that dates back to Roman times but was particularly popular during the 1800s. It also makes a good base for visiting nearby places such as Glastonbury, Wells, and Stonehenge. Brighton is another popular day trip from London. It was a favorite beach destination for the Crown Prince in the early part of the 19th century but really gained steam four decades later when the rail lines came into town. Now it’s a bit faded but is nonetheless known for its antiques and bohemian vibe.

Oxford and Cambridge are famous college towns with lengthy histories. Students of both are known to enjoy spending their free time punting on the nearby rivers. Oxford most notably served as a filming location for the Harry Potter movies and there’s plenty for fans of the series to see. Meanwhile, Cambridge makes a good base for visiting the rest of East Anglia including the nearby countryside towns of Ely and Peterborough, which are both home to ancient cathedrals and other interesting sites.

8. Is London a safe place to visit?

Yes. London is among the safest places to travel to, though all travelers should take basic precautions. Along with those recommendations made above, travelers ahould aoid walking alone at night and should never carry excessive cash or valuables. Plan your routes and transportation ahead of time to feel more condifent about your day and your whereabouts.

Likewise, familiarize yourself with common scams that might be used against you to avoid becoming a victim. Just use the same caution you would exercise in any city and you should be just fine, even at night. London is even a safe place for women traveling alone – very few problems arise as long as basic safety measures are followed. Research safety here if you’re concerned!

9. What should I do if my clothing or luggage vanished or was forgotten en route?

While second-hand shops can be found in England if you’re willing to hunt for them, there aren’t any major ones like there are in the United States. Your best bet for finding clothes at affordable prices are nationally recognized discount chains like Primark.

10. Do I need to buy a map of the Tube before I go?

Not at all! There are perfectly good pocket-sized Tube maps that are available for free at most stations. There are also large city maps on the station walls by the outside doors. These can help you figure out which way to go in order to reach your destination after you depart the premises. What is also really handy, is using your phone to download a free Tube map or using an app like Google Maps that will help you navigate the Tube.

11. What’s the deal with the Oyster Card?

The Oyster Card is a good way to save money on public transport in London because tickets for bus and Tube rides are considerably cheaper if they’re not bought individually. If you plan on using or needing a lot of rides in a 24 hour period, using the card means that transportation will never cost you more than a set amount. Oyster Cards can be bought at any Tube station for a £5 deposit as well as how much you want to put on the card. You fill up the card on the machine readers when you enter the Tube or bus and again when you exit. Once you’re done with it, you can cash it out at one of the machines and get your £5 back as well as any money that’s left on it.

"Can I wear shorts in London?" Of course you can. Personally, I don't generally wear shorts as a tourist for a few reasons - I don't like my legs touching the public transit seats, I don't find them comfortable for a lot of walking, they aren't as common in Europe, so I feel like half-dressed, and it's just not that hot in London. If you want to wear shorts, I'd recommend a bit longer than what Americans wear and try to avoid pairing them with athletic shoes.

As a Londoner, it was really interesting to read about a tourist's experience of the city. My advice for travelling to London (or anywhere in the UK for that matter) is to bring clothes for ALL seasons, whenever you come here. One minute it could be freezing or pouring with rain and the then next minute there might be brilliant sunshine and you're sweating! I'm constantly removing or adding layers. Quite a good writeup but I nowhere found even the smallest mention of a blazer, either single or double breasted which is an all-time classic for both men and women .Its the sign of a "gentleman" in Britain esp.in brown, gray or navy blue, though many may consider it to be out of style.When you mentioned the classic trench, this deserves a mention too.

Figuring out what to pack for London can be a REAL struggle.

With such variable weather in the UK, sometimes you’re stuck wondering whether you’re going to need your bikini and board shorts in June or your parka and leggings (this is slightly extreme, but you get the picture).

As someone who has lived in London for the past 9 years, I’m pulling together this London packing list to help you prepare for all eventualities, including what to pack for London in the winter, what to pack for London in the summer, and everything in between.

This packing list for London will be incredibly useful to someone who is

a) a visitor to London for a short period b) a study abroad student in London wondering what to pack for your semester or program abroad c) expats to London who are coming from very different climates and trying to assess which clothes to bring with them (as someone from Florida, I can relate to this!)

Now, let’s get into what you should bring to London for the adventure of a lifetime…or at least so your feet don’t get cold.

London Packing List Essentials

You know the things you pack in your carry-on so you can still have a good trip and not completely fall apart should the airline lose your luggage?

The stuff that is ESSENTIAL and oh-so-important and will make your trip either a success or an awkward story about the time you lost all of your luggage and then cried in London for two weeks?

Yeah, that stuff.

These are the top tier requirements for your London packing list that I want you to drill into your head now so you don’t forget them!

IMPORTANT: are you coming to the UK from abroad?

In case you’re reading this from outside the UK and will be a foreign visitor here, you need to know these 2 things to stay safe and save money.

• Travel insurance – you need it when going overseas! I use this site to get the best quotes and purchase my packages from. Do not skip this – having medical coverage abroad as well as other coverage in case of missed flights, lost luggage, etc is essential. As I said, I have never gone wrong using this site .
• International debit cards without fees – do not get stuck paying extortionate foreign fees when using your card abroad (and the UK is almost all card these days). I use the Wise debit and travel card which you can apply and learn more about here .

1. Umbrella or some type of raincoat

I’m not suggesting that it rains in London every day.

In fact, I’m not suggesting that it rains in London as much as you think it might rain in London.

That being said, the weather in London doesn’t always act like it’s predicted to.

And when the rain comes, it might not be a deluge type of thunderstorm rain, but it can be a misty, constant, annoying rain.

This goes for all seasons!

With that in mind, I would suggest that one of the first things you pack for London is either a small umbrella like this one that you can pack up tightly and put in a backpack, or a waterproof coat like this one (it doesn’t have to be a dedicated raincoat).

This ensures that you’re always covered, quite literally, and you don’t have to find yourself sitting in Trafalgar Square trying to eye up where you can run for cover.

After all, the British way is to “keep calm and carry on,” and that includes when it rains.

2. Converters

When bringing electronics such as laptops, phones and cameras over to the UK, it’s important to make sure that your electronics are either capable of handling the voltage of the UK, or that you pack a converter which will convert the UK voltage into the voltage your electronics require.

There are some cases where you just shouldn’t plug an American item into a UK socket (more on that below in the What Not to Pack for London list), but for things like your laptops and camera, just do your research beforehand to figure out whether you do or do not need a converter like this one .

In today’s day and age, converters are mostly a thing of the past as most electronics are built to handle both the UK and other voltages, but like I said, do your own due diligence to double check the labels beforehand.

3. Adapters

Regardless of the voltage your electronics can take, you’re definitely going to need an adapter for everything you want to plug into a wall in the UK.

This is because UK sockets are shaped differently from sockets around the world and have their own design.

My favorite types of adapters are the ones you can use for lots of countries like this one .

The beauty of having ones like these is that you don’t have to keep buying specific adapters wherever you go.

If you take a day trip to Paris from London, boom – you’ve got the European adapter.

If you happen to buy something in the UK and then want to use it in the US, boom – you’ve got an adapter .

Remember that you’re going to need these for each plug you have to plug in, so don’t just pack 1 for a family of four – bring plenty so no one is stressed over not being able to charge their phone before leaving for the Harry Potter tour.

4. Good Walking Shoes

While London is not a “walkable” city in the same way that somewhere like Malaga or Bruges or Oxford is a walkable city (meaning you can basically walk everywhere), there is still a LOT of walking to be done in London.

In fact, it’s mostly how we get around – sure, we use public transportation, but once you get off and on at tube stops, work your way to bus stations, etc, you’re still using your feet quite a lot.

And on nice days, walking is one of the best ways to get around central London.

Sure, you might not want to walk from London’s East End to Kensington in the west (it would take hours!), but you can absolutely walk from Hyde Park to the Science Museum or from Churchill War Rooms to Southbank or from Soho to Covent Garden.

What does this mean for your packing list for London?

It means you need some EXCELLENT walking shoes .

They don’t have to be a stereotypical walking shoe, if you don’t want.

You don’t have to rock the Sketchers all the way around town (though more power to you if you do).

You simply need a shoe that feels comfortable on your feet for many miles.

You should have broken them in first before getting to London, and if possible, they should be an all-weather type of shoe like this one .

5. Underwear and socks

Back to the “essentials to put in your carry-on in London list” – um, don’t forget your underwear.

At least a couple of pairs.

What underwear you wear is not my business or problem, and I would highly recommending exploring London with clothes on, so London’s not going to care what you’ve got going on underneath either.

Just don’t forget to pack it in your carry-on, because I’ve almost done that on a ski trip before and was really contemplating how I was going to find underwear for less than like $100 on top of a mountain and it wasn’t great.

So, yeah – underwear!

What to Pack for London in the Winter

Winter in London is one of the only times that the weather is pretty much guaranteed – it’s going to be cold.

Not Arctic cold, but cold.

And probably grey.

And probably rainy.

And definitely dark because it gets dark at like 4pm in the winter and you spend your whole day begging the sunshine to come out, but it hates you in December and so just doesn’t.

Or something like that.

Anyway, your London packing list in the winter should include the essentials listed above, as well as…

6. Winter coat

You need a warm coat to visit London in the winter.

Londoners typically wear dark colors, but I say go for whatever color you prefer because life’s too short to be in all black all the time.

I prefer peacoats like this that are good for going to plays or afternoon tea in London , going to work and just general commuting and living life, but for the really cold days, consider a jacket like this that is windproof, waterproof and super warm so that you don’t feel frozen to your core.

7. Waterproof shoes

I cannot recommend a good pair of waterproof shoes enough.

Guy has some like these , and I’ve got my eye on some like these , but they seriously are a great idea for the winter when you’re more likely to encounter wet and damp.

The reason these work so well is that you don’t have to wear a separate pair of shoes or boots, like rain boots, in order to deal with the weather.

You can simply incorporate them into your existing outfit and, wallah – dry feet!

When the weather outside is frightful, the boots on your feet are so…delightful.

Packing a pair of boots for London in the winter is always advisable due to the cold and slush and general dreariness that’s possible.

You don’t need like full on hiking boots, but a pair of fur-lined boots like these are always a great idea, or possibly a fashionable pair of knee high boots for going out at night like these.

Scarves are such a fashion statement AND a practical accessory in London.

Add a loop scarf like this to your London packing list – I use kinds like these and they are super cozy around your neck and really easy to travel with because they serve as good neck pillows on trains and planes and are easy to take off and on with one hand.

If you’re more partial to a more traditional scarf, try a super soft one like this .

10. Winter Hats

Especially if you’re walking around all day, having a hat to keep your head warm in London is a real necessity.

You can opt for any style you want, though I do mean something more like a knit hat like this one as opposed to your wildest west cowboy hat.

I like a slouchy one like this , while Guy prefers tighter beanies like this one .

Whatever you choose, make sure it keeps your ears warm as the cold can be really biting, especially if you’re walking along the water.

11. Leggings

People, leggings are where it’s at.

You can wear them by themselves if you choose dark, thick pairs like these ones or these ones .

Or you can use them as extra insulation under your jeans, which I am ALL ABOUT.

Get a thinner pair like these that will keep your legs warm while also not making you feel like a bloated whale.

12. Comfortable hoodie

To be honest, while I know London is a fashionable place and most people are going to be walking around with more trendy or fashionable winter wear, there’s something about a slouchy, comfortable hoodie that really comes in handy when you’re just lounging around your accommodation or want to pop out to the store or something similar.

I love these hoodies like these with cool designs and usually get them in a size up so they’re cozy rather than fitted.

13. Vitamin D pills

If you’re coming to London for a long time in the winter, bring some Vitamin D with you!

The sun really doesn’t shine all that much, and when it does it’s not for long.

This can lead to a Vitamin D deficiency, so if you’re here for a couple of weeks or longer and prone to things like Seasonal Affective Disorder, it can’t hurt to have some on hand.

Things to Bring to London in the Spring

Spring is an interesting time to pack for London because it could snow in April or you could have an amazingly warm day in March – it’s sort of all up to the UK weather gods, and unfortunately I haven’t been able to get in touch with them yet about how to regulate the temperature better.

This means that you should come prepared for a wide variety of weather, which is easily accomplished with layers!

14. Cardigans

A cardigan is the perfect item on your Spring in London packing list due to the easy ability to put them on and take them off.

You’re not committed to wearing it the whole day if you don’t want, and you can get thin or thicker ones depending on the month in Spring you’re going (erring towards thinner ones in late April/May and thicker ones in late March/April).

I love ones like these that are chunky and cozy for the early Spring ones, and ones like these that are much lighter for the later Spring months.

Also, they can pair with loads of outfits, and they’re versatile in how you wear them so you can create multiple different outfits with the same cardigan.

That is a bonus for packing light!

15. Long sleeve t-shirts

Spring is still a great time for long sleeve shirts – they are easy to layer with adding a scarf, sweater, or cardigan, or you can just wear it on its own if the weather gets warmer.

Guy prefers more plain long sleeve shirts like this , while I go for something like this to add a bit more color while still being cute.

16. Short sleeve t-shirt

In Late Spring, short sleeve shirts will allow you to really have the ultimate wardrobe flexibility!

You can layer almost anything on top of it, or strip down to just the shirt and enjoy the sunshine.

Get a pack of moisture wicking shirts like this that will dry quickly if you are traveling for a long time and don’t have time to wash your clothes anywhere except the hotel sink.

17. Capris or Jeans

As for your bottom half, long pants like jeans are still very much worn in London in the Spring.

This isn’t a tropical climate where you’re going to be hit with incredibly warm temperatures every day.

Like I said, it has snowed in April!

If you want to prepare for a warmer spring, bring some capris to give your ankles a bit of room to breathe.

18. Light Scarf

By the time Spring is in full swing, you can leave the chunky knit scarf at home and instead opt for a light scarf like this one that will add that extra bit of oomph to any outfit.

19. Tights and dresses

You can start breaking out the lighter dresses like these ones to enjoy the spring months in London.

Dresses like these with loads of bold patterns aren’t necessarily the norm, but you can either dare to be different or keep it a bit more floral/plain with dresses like these that will help you blend in with every other Londoner on the streets.

I would recommend wearing tights with dresses all throughout Spring in London, unless you’re in a heatwave.

That being said, Brits tend to dress more formally than Americans so even in a sweltering summer, you’ll still find some people that won’t ditch the tights at all!

20. Comfortable hoodie

I tend to dress more casual, and I find that hoodies are the way to go on colder Spring nights.

Look out for a comfortable hoodie like this one for nights spent chilling on a balcony somewhere, or opt for a more dressed up look like this for a night on the town.

When Spring has sprung in London, a comfortable pair of flats in addition to your walking shoes will be a godsend given the cute dresses and jeans you’re planning on wearing.

The problem with flats, for me, is how they can really tear up your feet if you walk in them all day.

For that reason, I recommend ones like these that put comfort first, and ones like these that roll up easily so you can fit them in your suitcase without taking up all the space.

London Packing List for the Summer

Whether you’re visiting London in August , coming to London in September or visiting earlier in the summer, you’re going to be in for a wild ride of London summer weather.

Sometimes, it’s rainy and cold and you need a coat.

Sometimes, it’s so hot and there’s no air conditioning that everyone basically sleeps with their windows open and ice packs in their beds.

So, as you can imagine, putting together a London packing list for the summer can be a real struggle.

I would still recommend layers and keeping your options open, but here are some of the must-haves.

22. Short sleeve shirts

Finally, London in the summer means you can usually wear short sleeve shirts (at least underneath a cardigan or other layer if you need to).

Break out the graphic tees, break out the colorful prints, break out the skin because summer might last only a day so might as well make the most of it!

Okay, so Londoners don’t really wear shorts.

Even when it’s really hot.

However, that being said, there is also no air conditioning in most of London or England because why would they need air conditioning when the heat doesn’t last for a long time?

Except, as a visitor to London, I feel like you should embrace your favorite shorts if that’s what you want to do to stay cool – I certainly do in the summer and I have a full time job I have to go into and THANK GOD it’s casual enough that I can get away with it, because otherwise all of my skin would melt off on the Central Line.

Keep it a bit more formal with shorts like these, or rock some denim like its 1995 with shorts like these .

For another way to enjoy London in the summer, add skirts to your London packing list.

They’re great for going out in the evening when you don’t want to wear jeans or long pants, and perfect for enjoying some time in the parks while letting the breeze pass you by.

25. Dresses

Break out some adorable summer dresses like this one or this one to really embrace summer in London.

Bonus – dresses look great in Instagram shots if you’re hoping to impress all of your family and friends back home, and they give everything room to breathe (and they will also expand to fit the giant portion of fish and chips you just ate).

26. Lightweight tights

As I mentioned, Londoners often prefer to wear tights under dresses even in the summer, so if you want to fit in, get yourself a pair of sheer tights like these ones or lightweight tights like these ones that won’t make your legs sweat but will make sure you don’t have a Marilyn Monroe moment while walking over a storm grate or something.

27. Long pants

Okay, so summer in London isn’t ALL ice cream and sunshine.

There will be some colder days as well, and perhaps some colder days, so wear long pants on the plane or train as your travel clothes and then use them during your trip if you need to.

People recommend all different type of jeans like these and hiking pants like these, but I like just a pair of dark pants like these that go with a lot of outfits and aren’t too hot.

Flats are another essential part of your London summer packing list – choose a bright and colorful pair like thes e to go with your new dress, or opt for a more subtle black or brown look like these ones to pair with a more sophisticated ‘going out’ outfit.

The great thing about flats are that they’re also not bulky, so you can put them in your luggage no problem.

29. Sandals

Summer in London of 2018 was one of the hottest on record, and basically all of the fashion rules went out the window.

While I wouldn’t typically recommend sandals for walking around London, on the hottest days, you should really invest in some comfortable sandals like these that will let your feet breathe.

Like, no, you shouldn’t be wearing your favorite Mickey Mouse crocs if you want to blend in, but a more subtle sandal might be the difference between losing your mind or not on a really hot London summer’s day when the air is still and the air conditioning is nowhere to be found.

30. Sweaters for night

Again with the layers – pack a few lightweight sweaters like these ones to pair with jeans and flats if you need to in the evening or on colder, rainy, days.

What Else Should You Include on Your London Packing List?

In addition to the clothing items and essential things to bring listed at the beginning of this article, there are some other things that I would make sure to include on your packing list for London to make sure you have a great, comfortable, time.

31. Travel camera

Trust me, I know phone cameras are amazing nowadays.

You can basically create works of art just from an iPhone and I am ALL for that.

That being said, if you are someone who likes to scrapbook your experiences or print pictures from your trip instead of just posting them to Instagram, don’t forget to bring a more professional camera than your phone.

My husband uses this one , and the picture he’s able to take with it with just a few changes in the settings are truly amazing – night skies with stars shining brightly, gorgeous sunset photos, and architecture photography that really captures the essence of what it means to be in London.

This isn’t something for everyone – if you’re happy taking pictures on your phone and sending them to grandma, then that’s absolutely your call – but if you do want to branch out a bit and try to get some even better photos of London, don’t forget to pack the camera!

32. Travel backpack

I don’t care who you are in London, student, businessman, the Queen – you’re probably carrying around a backpack (okay probably not the Queen but I bet she would if she were allowed).

Backpacks are the easiest way to carry your belongings around if you’re going on more than a couple hour trip.

I carry one into work every day, and take it with me wherever I go, even if I’m going out to dinner or a show or an event afterwards.

When you’re traveling, you want a backpack that you can use both as a carry-on on the plane and as a travel backpack while in London.

Because of that, I want to recommend a couple of different European travel backpacks I know and love that should not only go on your London packing list, but be an integral part of how you actually pack your things!

First up is this one – this is the one I use to take to work every single day.

I like it because there are a ton of different designs and it’s pretty cute.

It’s also small enough to not feel unwieldly when I carry it around, but large enough that I use it as a “place under the seat in front of you” carry-on just fine.

The one thing it does lack is compartments on the inside – it’s mostly just an empty cavern with a few pockets internally and then the smaller compartment on the outside like on most backpacks.

This works for me, but maybe not for you if you prefer endless pockets and zips in your backpack.

33. Compartment suitcases

Packing is an art form, and packing for London when your hotel room or AirBnb is probably going to be smaller than you’re used to (what can I say, it’s a big city on a small island), you’re going to want to pack as efficiently as possible.

That’s where these compartmentalizing packing cubes come in handy!

Before I started using these, basically everytime I packed it was a real roll of the dice as to whether I’d be able to find my pajamas without throwing every single thing out of the suitcase and onto the floor.

Now, I keep separate compartments for separate types of clothes and items, which makes it way easier for me to find, gives me more space when I get to where I’m staying, and sort of just makes me feel like I have my life together.

34. Portable charger

In addition to your regular chargers and the extra adaptors you need for your phone to be charged in the UK, I would highly recommend carrying around a portable cellphone charger like this one .

Essentially, with all of the use your phone will likely get – from looking up directions to possibly taking photos to WhatsApping your friends back home to show them that you’re in front of Buckingham Palace and HA HA THEY ARE NOT – you’re going to want some extra support in keeping it charged.

These things are lifesavers when you’re running out of battery and still halfway through your day with no chance to go anywhere for a long period of time to charge your phone.

They’re easy to shove in your travel backpack, and ones like these are even small enough to keep in your pocket so you can charge your phone while it’s in your hand!

35. Passport holder and extra copy of passport

Do not forget an extra copy of your passport, in full color, on your packing list for London!

If you find that you lose your passport while here, you’ll be so grateful you have a copy as it will help you get a new one faster.

In addition to that, finding somewhere safe to keep your passport is essential, so I would recommend buying a dedicated passport holder like this one that makes it way easier to get track of and less likely to get shoved to the bottom of a bag somewhere.

There is no fear quite like the fear of losing your passport, so take note!

It goes without being said that you should include things like your toothbrush and deodorant on your London packing list, but I do want to address toiletries to let you know that you can easily find shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste and other toiletries in London.

Head to somewhere like Tesco or Sainburys and boom – you’ve saved yourself having to pack your toiletries in your luggage and worry about fluid limits.

What Not to Pack for London

Certain items can and should be left at home when you’re packing for a trip to London.

I mean, basic things like: don’t actually take the kitchen sink and also you won’t really need to take your scuba diving gear with you.

But also things that you might have thought you needed and you don’t, like…

Tank tops or swimsuit

This is a very specific one, but unless you love swimming and are determined to swim while in London, there’s no point in bringing a bathing suit because you’re certainly not going to swim in the Thames – gross!

I would also leave your tank tops at home in the summer unless you use it to layer underneath other clothes.

The weather often isn’t hot enough to wear tank tops or spaghetti straps by themselves, and even when it is, it’s not the most London-suitable clothing items.

I’m not saying you don’t need a hair dryer in London, I’m just saying – DON’T BRING YOURS!

The voltage on an American hair dryer isn’t compatible with the UK voltage and you could start a fire if you plug yours in in the UK.

It’s not worth the potential damage to your life, your accommodation, or your hair dryer.

Instead, buy a cheap one there from somewhere like Boots or ask ahead to see if your accommodation has one there.

Hair straightener or curling iron

Same thing with a hair straightener as above – don’t bring yours because it could start melting after being plugged in in the UK and ain’t nobody got time for that.

Outdoorsy stuff

London is wonderful, but unless you have some day trips planned to other places, you don’t need your hiking boots and survival kit.

It’s a big city, and while the parks are beautiful and spacious, you can appreciate them in your regular clothes – fear not.

Money belts

When I first moved abroad, I was convinced that everyone was out to get me.

And of course I think you should keep your belongings safe in London , but I really wouldn’t bother with a money belt in London.

I am in London every day of the week and have not worn a money belt and have never had anything stolen.

London, like every other big city, has its own issues and of course you always need to keep an eye on your belongings, but leave the money belt at home.

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Nice article. I just wanted to point out that dual voltage hair dryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc. are available these days on Amazon. Of course you’ll still need an adaptor for the plug which the hotel will usually provide. You can also order British plugs and hard wire them to your dual voltage appliance (my husband does this for me).

What to Wear in United Kingdom

Top style tips for the united kingdom.

• Like most of Western Europe there is no dress code as such and really  anything is acceptable .
• Black is always a popular  color, and smart casual clothes will help you fit right in.
• In the UK  jeans are worn by everyone  – young and old alike – and unless you are visiting more upscale restaurants they are perfectly acceptable to wear everywhere.
• But a few  up-market London venues  and country hotels do still have a ‘smart' dress code which is enforced (no jeans or sneakers, jacket and tie for gents) so check if you plan to dine in these places.
• Unless you are staying at a hotel with a swimming pool, or intend visiting a spa, or the beach in high summer –  leave your swimsuit at home  as you're unlikely to need it.
• If you  are  hitting the beaches,  regular swimwear / a bikini  is fine for swimming on the hottest days (July and August), but in spring and Fall wetsuits are popular (short or full length) to keep out the chill. From October to March it will be just too cold to swim, except for the very hardy!
• When out in the countryside you may be some distance from shelter if the weather turns bad;  at all times of year go prepared  with a sweater, waterproof, snacks and drinking water. Take a mobile phone in case of emergency too.

The first time you travel to another country, it can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t know what you need to bring with you. That’s why we’ve prepared this simple packing checklist for England so you can have all of the necessities on hand when you step off the plane.

Locals in London tend to have a fondness for vests, earthy colors, dark colors, and academia styles . Most outfits start with a button-down and are finished off with an argyle vest and some trousers. Londoners are traditionalists. They are not as playful and eccentric with fashion as American and Parisian styles . London outfits usually won’t have more than three colors into one outfit and tend to lean into neutral colors.

You’ll know why a knitted vest is a must-have when you get there. During summer, you can even wear it as is. The best colors for vests are navy blue, black, and beige.

Thermal Tights Or Leggings

Before I recommend tights as a part of your packing list, I should emphasize that tights should not be worn as sports attire. As much as possible, try to steer away from sweater-and-leggings ensembles to avoid looking sluggish. Thermal tights can be worn under a dress or a skirt in fall or winter.

Turtleneck Long-Sleeved Top

Turtleneck tops are essential for a fall or winter trip, but they are also chic to wear with trousers if you’re feeling a minimal London style. This keeps you warm while making you look dressed up and tailored, even without accessories or a blazer. A plain turtleneck long-sleeved top is also perfect for balancing outfits with printed maxi skirts and pants.

¾ Sleeve Top 

If you’re still unsure of the weather, a ¾-sleeved top is a good option. This keeps you warm when it’s a bit chilly, but it also does not restrict air when it turns sunny. Just be reminded that some maxi dresses can make you look touristy. To blend in with the locals, you might want to pick maxi dresses that are neutral in color. For your footwear, opt for walking sandals, instead of flip-flops, to avoid looking sloppy. Loafers are a great option too.

Trenchcoat 

Every Londoner has their favorite trench coat – be it khaki, leather, or wool. Trench coats can often be seen during spring, fall, and some parts of summer when the breeze is cold.

I recommend bringing a trench coat regardless of the season you’re visiting London, especially if you’re not bringing any more cover-ups. They’re versatile, stylish, and chic, which makes them the perfect cover-up to wear in pictures. A trenchcoat is a London fashion must-have!

Rain Jacket

Compared to a bulky trench coat, a rain jacket is more sufficient, especially if you’re not meeting anyone from work or going on a smart-casual event. I especially recommend bringing a rain jacket for your London outfits if you’re visiting in the spring or summer.

Fleece Jacket 

A fleece jacket is one of the layers you can utilize during the coldest months of the year. London winter can be really harsh and wet, so a thermal fleece jacket can be really useful in reducing the layers that you have to put in. You will only need a long-sleeved top, a pair of bottoms, and boots to finish off. Some people can get cold fast, so the layers still depend on how much you can tolerate.

Blazer 

As mentioned earlier, Londoners love to wear tailored, smart, and masculine fits. A staple blazer can be used in different ways, even in outfits that are not meant for a smart-casual occasion. Personally, a blazer is something I’d wear to a museum visit. I’ll style them with dressy shorts and knee-high boots. For formal occasions, you can wear a matching blazer suit and loafers.

Midi Skirt

Penny Loafers 

Universities in London influenced the use of penny loafers both inside and outside the campus. Penny loafers are classic pieces that go with any London-inspired, academia-styled outfit. They’re versatile, and good quality pairs usually last a really long time. You might want to get penny loafers with chain embellishments for extra shine. 

Wedges are great alternatives to high heels because they elevate your fit without compensating for comfort. Wedges are, however, only limited to day trips. They are not suitable for wearing to formal events or dinners. If you have similar plans, you might want to stick with kitten heels or block heels instead. 

Sandals (for sightseeing)

What To Wear In London During Spring 

Although spring is a season of bloom for other parts of the world, London is usually bombarded with spontaneous rain showers and chilly evenings. It is a transition period between the coldest and hottest months after all, making it difficult to choose appropriate London outfits.

When we think of spring, we think of flowers, pastels, and bright colors. A great way to incorporate the blooming aura of the season is by adding one element of color to your outfit. It is important not to go overboard with colors as it can be too bold of an outfit for London. It is still crucial to remember that Londoners are particular with choosing neutral and visually palatable colors when coming up with their outfits.

Remember that it’s still not the right time to switch from your thermal coat to a thin jacket for your outerwear. In the first months of spring, there’s almost no difference from winter when it comes to London fashion so practical measures still have to be considered. Skirts and short dresses are great, but you might want to keep on the thermal tights and double layers to stay comfortable.

During the day, you might have to wear casual shoes that you would not mind getting wet in puddles or mud pools if you’re visiting the countryside. A nice pair of leather boots or waterproof sneakers are the best and most versatile options you can pack during this time of year. Heels can be worn later in the evenings, but a handy pair of ballet flats (that can at least get you through slippery streets safely) is good.

What To Wear In London During Summer 

Like anywhere in the world, Summer is when you can wear anything you want without adding a thermal layer. From dresses, and skirts, to dressy shorts – the sky is the limit for London summer! 

Bright days ahead are expected for most London summers. For a day trip, you might want to wear a maxi dress and a denim jacket for a bit of tailored contrast. You can switch up the dress for a sleek blazer, sleeveless top, and shorts for a neat and smart fit.

You can wear walking sandals or loafers freely as a part of your summer London outfits. Opt for a formal black or satin dress paired with high heels during the evenings. If you’re going somewhere more laid back, you can choose to wear ballet flats instead. However, I suggest not skipping the dress, mostly because a night in a historically rich city like this can be romantic regardless of who you’re traveling with.

Despite the sunshine, London will always be London and showers will happen. You’re wrong if you think you will not need outerwear in London during summer. A light jacket, a poncho perhaps, is something still useful to have. Shoes that you don’t mind getting wet is also a plus. For an easy outfit switch, a cardigan or a shawl comes in handy if you’re already set to wear a summer dress or a dressy sleeveless top.

What To Wear In London During Fall

If London had a personality, it would be Fall. You’ll notice that Londoners tend to wear clothes from fall all year round, just in lesser layers for warmer months. Londoners also love an earthy fall color palette of dark brown, khaki, navy blue, and olive green. Wearing those colors as part of your fall London outfits is definitely the move.

Fall is a lot like spring. The weather fluctuates very often and chilly sunny mornings are to be expected, but there is nothing cozier than a fall afternoon in one of the most romantic cities in the world. Fall in London is like a dream and London style is perfect for this season!

It’s time to pack your long-sleeved button-downs, knitted vests, midi skirts, trench coats, and knee-high boots for your London outfits. I personally love layering in fall because the weather is undemanding of bulky pieces. I tend to have more freedom to layer and manipulate my silhouette during the autumn season.

What To Wear In London During Winter 

Visiting London in winter is not everyone’s cup of tea. But if you’re up for a visit, you’ll need adequate gear and proper outerwear to sustain comfort for your stay. And to me, it feels like London fashion is specifically geared towards winter, with lots of stylish coats and boots to get you through.

In winter, especially when it really gets cold, layers are important. Try to be creative with your layers if you don’t want to wear a bulky, heavy jacket. Play with fabrics and texture to add character, depth, and color to your London fashion fits.

A great foundation outfit you can consider wearing is a thermal turtleneck shirt, white jeans, trench coat, and scarf. You can also try a knitted sweater and a long leather coat. Footwear that you don’t mind getting wet, like waterproof shoes and/or chunky boots is also helpful. I personally recommend wearing boots with chunky lug soles because, aside from their trendy and chic look, they can keep you safe and dry from wet walkways.

First, wear comfortable shoes . London is a big city with sights that require a good bit of walking. In order to leave no room for unforeseen events, it’s of course preferable to go through this list a few days before leaving rather than the day before departure, as you might miss some items.

Take the time to read and download it in order to identify the things that you absolutely must pack and that you might miss and that could make you lose time and money if you forget them.

You will also need to think about packing according to the type of accommodation you will be staying in, the different modes of transportation you will use during your trip, the climate and the season, as well as the activities you plan to do.

I LOVE London style, it’s so stylish yet varied, from the weird and wonderful fashions of Camden to the trendy scenes in Brick Lane, it’s the perfect city to do some serious style spotting.

One of the top tips when visiting London in the summer is to dress for the weather, the British climate is notoriously unpredictable and changeable.

Be prepared for sun one minute and serious downpours the next, it’s important to pack for all scenarios – summer can get warm but it can also be very wet and grey – make sure to carry an umbrella and plan for layers!

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a summer  travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

If you plan on visiting the city in the summer think PRINTS (I’m slightly in love with tropical inspired designs, perfect for S/S 14), opt for bold and bright dresses – midi length is totally chic – layered over a effortlessly cool leather or oversized denim for the cooler days or night.

Stylish leather loafers or summer sandals are great for exploring the city through the day, if you plan on exploring London by night (hit Leicester Square for rooftop bars and late night pizza stands) pack a pair of heeled ankle boots.

Avoid looking like a tourist (it’s a sure target for thieves) by sidestepping wearing cargo shorts, walking boots and a backpack, instead rock a pair of high waisted printed shorts (or a skort), a pair of flatform sandals and an oversized satchel.

I thought I would comment on this one, because I miss London so much, and these articles were very helpful to me when I went. I found some of the summer days so hot I had heatstroke and ended up with swollen legs that had to be elevated the entire day at my hotel, the last full day of my trip. So I can’t emphasize enough the importance of good walking shoes (fashionability feels second to how important this is), resting in cooler areas, and hydration, an underrated fashion accessory! ;-).

Style Notes: When in doubt, you can always rely on trackies to deliver on the comfort front. Opt for leather slides instead of trainers for a fashion spin.

5. Cable-Knit Jumper + Leggings + Trainers

Style Notes:  If you've got an early start and you're travelling from somewhere cool, a chunky jumper is a non-negotiable. Style it with leggings and a tee underneath so you can remove the extra layers when you land.

You can also chuck this over your outfit on cooler summer evenings.

Available in regular and long lengths.

Pack these if your trip will involve a lot of walking.

6. Sweatshirt + Flowy Skirt + Trainers

Style Notes: From breakfast bar to boarding gate to window seat, you'll feel light as air in this comfortable combination. A long cotton skirt is basically a wearable blanket, and it doubles as a versatile piece for days by the beach.

I just know this will be so soft.

You want one in a super-stretchy jersey fabric that you won't mind sitting in all day (or night) long, with a tee underneath in case there's a chill on-board.

The best travel clothes | guide to high-performance & fashionable travel clothing.

We talk about our favorite travel clothing and help you find the perfect travel-friendly clothes to keep you comfortable on the road.

I’ve been a nerd about travel clothes since my first trip to Europe back in 2006—now I have a closet full of travel pants and shirts and jackets (you get the idea). It’s been refreshing to watch travel clothing evolve from hideous outdoorsy gear to stylish clothing made from high-tech fabrics.

In this guide, I’ve gathered some of the most popular travel clothing brands to help you find the best travel clothing so you can stay fashionable and comfortable while traveling.

The Current State Of Travel Clothes

In the old days, travel clothing used to look like this…

So what’s the deal with travel clothes these days?

I’d argue that the “travel clothing” market hasn’t changed much but the “performance clothing” market is actually what’s pushing the category forward—so these days, I consider travel clothing and performance clothing essentially the same thing.

And it makes sense because many of these new high-performance fabrics offer a ton of benefits that complement both everyday wear and travel.

Even mega-brands like Levis, Gap, Dockers, Lululemon, and Uniqlo are starting to offer fashionable “travel-friendly” or “performance” clothing but small niche brands are pushing the boundaries (which I’ll cover later in this article).

The Good Things About Travel Clothing

Travel clothes are finally being designed to be fashionable and stylish so you can easily wear them in Paris, Milan, or New York without looking out of place.

My #1 travel clothing rule is that I’ll never wear any “travel clothing” that I wouldn’t wear in my everyday life.

Second, high-tech clothes continue to evolve because more companies are developing better fabrics and competition is driving innovation.

The Bad Things About Travel Clothing

Unfortunately, high-tech travel clothing tends to be expensive.

First, many of the fabrics used are high-end so the raw materials are expensive. Second, a majority of travel clothing is made by small companies so they can’t mass produce their products—which pushes prices higher.

Another negative thing about travel clothing is that there are many options for men but fewer for women. This is probably because guys tend to stick to very basic items and they nerd out on “high-tech fabrics more than women.

So what can you expect to pay for travel clothes?

• Nice merino wool socks will be $10-$20/pair
• A pair of travel pants will range from $70-$180+
• A wool shirt will be $50-$100+

Do You NEED Travel Clothing?

Do you really “need” to shell out your hard-earned cash for these high-end garments?

I’ll be the first to say that you certainly don’t need clothes made out of technical fabrics when you travel. Many of these fabrics can make certain aspects of traveling easier and more comfortable… but they’re more of a “nice-to-have” than a “must-have.”

In my opinion, there are a few key pieces that I think deliver a ton of value and there are other items that are more optional — I’ll cover both throughout this article.

The Benefits of Travel Clothes & Performance Wear

What’s so great about travel clothing? Let’s take a look…

Durability & Multi-Day Wear

One of the main benefits of travel clothing is that you can wear them multiple times without having to wash them. This means you can pack fewer items so you can travel lighter.

Odor-Resistance

Many of the fabrics used in travel clothes have anti-odor properties. Merino wool is naturally odor-resistant but some synthetic materials are manufactured in a way to reduce odor.

Quick-Drying Abilities

If you plan on washing your clothes while you’re traveling it’s nice to have items that can be hand-washed and air-dried quickly (i.e. washing your socks and underwear in the sink). Quick-drying fabrics can also be beneficial if you get caught in the rain.

Wrinkle-Resistance

While it’s hard to completely prevent wrinkles when you’re living out of a suitcase, many materials have anti-wrinkle properties. In general, synthetic materials resist wrinkles better than natural fabrics but it depends on the fabric.

Lightweight & Packability

Performance fabric tends to be lightweight so it won’t weigh down your luggage as much — for example, a pair of tech pants will weigh half as much as a pair of jeans. Lightweight fabric also tends to dry quicker than something like cotton jeans which absorb water.

Moisture Wicking & Breathability

One of the most important factors in keeping comfortable is keeping dry. Moisture-wicking fabric helps pull sweat away from your skin and its breathability lets the moisture escape from the fabric.

Stretch and Comfort

Every fabric will have a different amount of stretch. Unsurprisingly, fabric with more stretch tends to be more comfortable since it allows you to move with less restriction.

But you’re always making a compromise when it comes to stretch because, in general, you sacrifice durability/water-repellency for stretchability.

Water Repellency

Certain fabrics are naturally water-repellent and others have chemical coatings which help keep water from soaking into the fabric. In my opinion, water repellency isn’t super high up on my “must-have” list (unless it’s a rain jacket) but it’s a nice bonus.

Note: The chemical water-resistant coatings aren’t permanent so they will become less effective the more the garment is washed.

High-Tech Performance Fabrics Explained

There are multiple different types of fabrics that travel clothing companies use to make their products. There is a lot of nuances and technical/marketing mumbo jumbo when it comes to each fabric but we’ll start with the three main fabric categories — natural fabrics, synthetic fabrics, and natural/synthetic blends.

Natural Fabrics

There are a handful of natural fabrics but the most common are merino wool and cotton.

Merino Wool

The best kind of natural fabric is fine merino wool because it has many natural benefits. Merino wool is naturally odor-resistant, soft, fairly durable, wicks moisture well, dries quickly, and works well in both hot and cold weather.

However, merino wool does have some downsides. First, it’s expensive so even a “cheap” merino wool t-shirt will cost around $50.

Second, thin wool has a tendency to develop holes much more quickly than a more robust fabric like cotton or synthetics.

And third, most wool can’t go in the dryer since heat will make it shrink so it does require a little extra care.

Cotton Should Be Avoided

Most travelers highly recommend avoiding cotton when it comes to travel clothing because cotton holds moisture and doesn’t dry quickly. For example, a cotton pair of socks will trap sweat which will cause odors, blisters, and sweaty feet.

That said, I’m not as militant when it comes to wearing cotton so I still wear cotton jeans and t-shirts. However, I still generally avoid cotton for socks and underwear.

Synthetic Fabrics

Things get a little more complicated when it comes to synthetic fabrics because there are dozens of different variations and each has different performance properties.

That said, synthetic fabrics are usually much cheaper to manufacture but some of the high-end technical fabrics are still expensive.

Synthetic fabrics are very durable, they can be highly water-repellent or even waterproof, many resist wrinkles, they dry very quickly, and they’re lightweight. Some synthetic materials also have a lot of flex so they’re comfortable to wear.

However, there are some negatives. First, synthetic fabrics can become smelly after one or two wearings. Some synthetic fabrics are treated with anti-odor chemicals so that helps.

Next, cheap synthetic fabrics have an ugly “synthetic sheen” and feel fake. Most of these cheap synthetics also make that “swish swish” sound when you walk. Advanced synthetic fabrics can look and feel very similar to natural fabrics but these fabrics are expensive — so you’ll have to pay if fashion is a concern.

Some cheap synthetics also don’t breathe well so they can get pretty balmy in the heat. That’s why you should look for “breathable” fabrics.

Another issue with synthetics is fabric flexibility. The most durable fabrics tend to not have very little flexibility. So if you’ll have to sacrifice a bit of durability for comfort in some instances.

Natural/Synthetic Blends

Travel clothing brands are starting to combine fine merino wool and synthetic fabric to give you the best of both worlds — performance and durability. I heard from someone in the wool industry that there is no performance loss as long as the blend includes at least 70% wool.

You’ll usually see blends in socks, underwear, and shirts.

The Best Travel Clothes and Recommended Travel Clothing Brands

Okay, okay… calm down. I’ve broken down each type of garment (socks, underwear, pants, shirts, etc.) into its own section.

I’ve tried giving specific recommendations when possible (and I’ll try my best to keep the recommendations up-to-date), but sometimes I can only point you towards companies that make tech-wear travel clothes.

I will also do my best to recommend options for all budgets since I know not everyone wants to drop $100 on a t-shirt.

Socks for Travel

In my opinion, a few nice pairs of socks (along with comfortable shoes) are the most important travel accessory. So, if you have a limited clothing budget, spend it on socks.

Boring, I know… but it will be your best bang for the buck

Fine merino wool socks are my favorite and preferred style of socks. Merino wool socks with a bit of synthetic material also work well because the synthetic fibers help the socks keep their shape/fit.

From my experience, 100% synthetic socks aren’t great but they’re not terrible.

Avoid cotton socks if you can.

Obviously, you’ll want to match your socks to the season — i.e. thin, no-show socks for the summer and longer/heavier socks for colder weather.

My Favorite Sock Brands:

• Smartwool : The most famous wool sock company. They offer just about every style. Check Amazon to see what’s available.
• Darn Tough Vermont : Darn Tough socks are made in the USA and they offer a lifetime warranty so that’s awesome. Check Amazon to see what’s available.
• Unbound Merino : This small company makes merino wool basics but we really dig their all-season ankle socks. They don’t contain as much wool as we’d like but this helps keep the cost down. Check them out at Unbound .
• Farm To Feet : This is another 100% USA company that makes a small but quality range of wool socks. Take a look at Amazon to see their offerings.
• Wigwam : Wigwam makes both merino wool and synthetic socks. While they’re not our favorite socks, their prices are pretty good so they’re worth checking out if you’re looking to save a little money. Check Amazon .

Travel Underwear

Ahh, yes. Travel underwear.

I’ve already written at length about the many benefits of travel underwear , but I’ll briefly cover them again below:

• Quick Drying: Wash them in the sink and they’ll be dry by morning.
• Moisture Wicking : This helps keep your skin dry.
• Breathable: This helps stop you from getting all sweaty down there.
• Odor Blocking: Stop the stink (or at least delay it)
• Comfortable: You don’t want to spend your time thinking about your uncomfortable underwear.

Synthetic Underwear

Most travel underwear is made from synthetic fabric which is designed to be soft, lightweight, and breathable. It isn’t the best at controlling odor since some synthetic material holds in odor but many brands have various manufacturing processes that help combat odor.

The most popular travel underwear is made by ExOfficio (you can read our Exofficio review but these guys essentially invented travel underwear). We tend to find the best prices on Amazon and REI .

Patagonia (i.e. everyone’s favorite outdoors brand) has a handful of nice underwear options for both men and women.

Another very popular option is Under Armour underwear . They get a ton of great reviews on Amazon , many people swear by them, and they’re sometimes cheaper than ExOfficio.

For budget travelers, Uniqlo has their Airism line of underwear which isn’t bad but I’m not a huge fan of their cuts. But they’re very affordable so they’re worth looking at.

If you’re on a tight budget, you should check out Target and discount stores like T.J. Maxx or Marshalls because you can find “athletic” underwear for decent prices.

 Merino Wool Underwear

Merino wool is actually a very solid choice for underwear — even in the summer. It’s soft, it’s lightweight, it breathes well, and it’s the best option for resisting odor. The two main downsides are the high prices and durability.

There are a few different brands that sell quality merino wool underwear:

• Allbirds : Allbirds (the company famous for their merino wool shoes) also makes quality underwear and socks for both men and women. Check them out at Allbirds .
• Wool & Prince: This is our current “go-to” brand when it comes to anything merino wool. They currently only offer men’s underwear. Check them out on Wool & Prince .
• Icebreaker: Another popular wool brand is Icebreaker and they make everything from underwear to coats. Browse their selection on Amazon to find a cut that fits your style.

The Best Travel Pants and Jeans For Men

The number of companies making travel-friendly pants and jeans has exploded over the past few years. It’s actually kind of overwhelming but I’ll help you sort it all out.

And don’t worry — all the pants we recommend are actually fashionable so you won’t be looking like a mountain climber while city hopping.

The main thing to remember is that each of the pants on this list has different performance properties so that’s something you’ll want to match the performance to your needs.

Bluffworks Ascender Chinos

Bluffworks, which makes a range of travel garments, recently released their new Ascender Chinos . These are made with lightweight high-performance fabric. The polyester twill fabric has a nice amount of stretch and it has a minimal amount of “synthetic sheen”. The fabric is lightweight so it breaths well, resists wrinkles, and has water-resistant properties.

It’s also nice that these come in both a regular and tailored fit. I own the tailored fit but it certainly isn’t constricting.

The Ascender Chinos have multiple security features like multiple secret zipper pockets to keep all your stuff safe (so you can throw away that terrible money belt).

There are a lot of people who think jeans make a terrible choice when it comes to travel pants… and they kind of are (they take forever to dry, they’re heavy, and can be hot). But I love traveling in jeans.

Well, Bluffworks helped address many of the “negative” things about denim with their Departure Jeans. These are made from 68% Cotton, 22% COOLMAX Polyester, 9% Rayon, and 1% Spandex so they are super stretchy and much more lightweight than normal denim.

And they included two cleverly designed hidden pockets that don’t interfere with the normal pockets.

But I’ve saved the best for last… these look like normal jeans and they’re legit comfortable. I wear them even when I’m not traveling and that’s about as good an endorsement as I can give.

Western Rise AT Slim Rivet Pants

Western Rise is a small performance apparel company from Telluride, Colorado that wanted to make clothing that performed well on the trails but still looked good in town. We think the AT Slim Rivet Pants do a really nice job of walking this balance.

The AT Slim Rivet Pants look very similar to standard five-pocket pants. The fabric is durable yet fairly lightweight and breathable (97% nylon, 3% spandex). Western Rise describes the fabric as “air-texturized fibers” so while it is nylon, the fabric has a cotton feel so there really isn’t any of that synthetic fabric sheen (but it does make a swishy noise).

The fabric also has a DWR coating to help repel water in case you get stuck in the rain or spill beer all over yourself. Additionally, there is a hidden zippered pocket for security.

As for the looks, these come in a slim but not skinny cut. They look like normal pants — which is a top priority. I wear my mine even when I’m not traveling.

The Western Rise AT Slim Rivet Pants retails for $128.

Outlier Slim Dungarees

Outlier designed their Slim Dungarees as a “five-pocket pant that we could travel the world in” and they’ve found their way on many of our trips to Europe. These have a great look and I think they’re some of the best-looking/most stylish travel pants. unfortunately, they’re also some of the most expensive so that’s something to keep in mind.

The Workcloth Doubleweave Canvas is both soft and lightweight yet very durable. The fabric has a nice amount of stretch and it dries very quickly. It also has a self-cleaning” NanoSphere® treatment that helps it repel water, coffee, wine, and dirt.

The Outlier Slim Dungarees sell for $198

Prana Brion Pants

PrAna is a well-established outdoorsy company so most of their stuff is better suited for things like hiking and rock climbing. That said, their Brion Pant  is one of their best-sellers thanks to its fairly modern cut and the fact that they look similar to jeans/chinos.

These are constructed from their durable and quick-drying ‘Zion’ fabric that’s actually stretchy (4-way stretch) so provides a good amount of movement. It’s also coated in a water-repellent (DWR) coating so it will withstand a little water.

So, these might not win any awards for fashion, they’re a solid choice at a solid price.

Everlane Performance Chinos

Everlane recently released their Performance Chinos which I’m also really digging. I own a pair so I can attest that these are very comfortable and they’re probably the most stylish pants on this list.

That said, their Performance Chinos are made from 94% Cotton, 6% Elastane so these are the least “technical” pants on this list as well. But I still think these are a nice option if you’re more concerned about comfort than technical features.

The Everlane Performance Chinos cost $68 and come in four colors.

Ministry Of Supply Kinetic Dress Pants

If you’re looking for a formal/dressy look, but still want a ton of comfort, then look no further than Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pants . These have been described as “dress pants with the feel of sweatpants”.

The Kinetic Pants are made from Japanese Primeflex polyester that has a ton of stretch, resists wrinkles, wicks moisture, and repels water.

Travel Pants & Jeans For Women

As we mentioned before, there is a lack of travel pants for women but we’ve tried to find some of the best of the limited choices that are available. One thing to note is that most women’s travel pants tend to focus more on comfort than “technical” fabrics.

Ministry of Supply

Of all the travel clothing brands, Ministry of Supply makes some of the most fashionable and best-performing clothes. Their stuff certainly isn’t cheap but the prices aren’t totally outrageous either.

Their flagship travel pants are their Slim Kinetic Pants which get rave reviews for looks, comfort, and performance. And they can be machine-washed and tumble-dried.

The Slim Kinetic Pants sell for $145.

Anatomie is a high-end women’s travel clothing company that’s one of the few brands which puts a heavy focus on fashion. Most of their travel-friendly pants are expensive at $225+/pair but they have a ton of different styles and cuts for just about every body type.

Prana Travel Pants

PrAna is one of the few companies that make women’s pants made out of legit technical fabrics. Most of their stuff falls into the “ugly hiking pants” category but they have a few different styles of pants and jeans that are actually cute. And most of their pants are priced around $80 so they’re not crazy expensive.

Lululemon may be known for its yoga clothing but they’ve also branched out to more fashion-conscious athleisure wear that works fairly well as travel pants.

The Best Shirts For Travel

Alright, moving right along to shirts made from high-performance fabrics that actually look stylish.

Wool & Prince Tees

I practically live in t-shirts so a few solid-color tees are a staple of any travel wardrobe. While pricy, I love my Wool & Prince merino wool tees . These can be worn for multiple days and I don’t have to worry about washing them.

They have both 100% wool tees and 78% / 22% merino nylon blends. I recommend the blend since it’s cheaper, more durable, and requires less care when washing.

Bluffworks Meridian Dress Shirt

If you’re looking for a sharp-looking yet no-fuss button up then look at the Meridian Dress Shirt from Bluffworks. It’s made from 98% polyester and 2% spandex so it won’t wrinkle and the fabric will dry very quickly. The fabric can take a beating and there aren’t any special care instructions. We also like how it comes in both a classic and slim fit.

Bluffworks Piton Polo

I’ve only had my Bluffworks Piton Polo for about a month but I’m already seeing why this is an excellent travel shirt. First, it looks great and I love how it comes in a classic and slim fit. Next, the breathable pique knit is breathable and it only has a very slightly noticeable synthetic look even though it’s 100% polyester. And like all Bluffworks clothing, the fabric is tough, wrinkle-resistant, and doesn’t require any special care.

Wool & Prince Polo

My Wool & Prince Polo always finds itself in my backpack. I love the cut and the quality is top-notch. It’s a nice “dressier” change from a t-shirt while still being casual. And you get all the benefits from merino wool fabric.

Wool & Prince offers has two types of polos — a 100% merino wool version and a 78% merino wool, 22% nylon blend. I own the blend version and I love it.

The Wool & Prince Polo sells for $78-$98.

Bluffworks Threshold Performance T-Shirt

You might be seeing a pattern here… but Bluffworks is back with their Threshold Performance T-Shirt. This ultra-lightweight t-shirt is made from a blend of 66% Polyester, 29% Lyocell, and 5% Elastane so it has a ton of stretch, wicks moisture well, and is very breathable. The fabric is thin (which is why it’s airy/breathable) so if you like a little more heft to your shirts then you might want to look elsewhere.

Wool & Prince Button-Ups

Wool & Price has a number of both short-sleeved and long-sleeve button-up shirts made from merino wool. I own one of their button-down oxford shirts and the fabric is very sturdy — I’d say it makes a nice choice for cooler weather as I can see it getting a little warm in the hot weather.

They also have a new wool/linen blend which will be more airy and breathable so these look great for warmer weather (I’ll be testing these once they get back in stock).

The Wool and Prince Button-Up Shirts sell for $98-$138

Outlier Merino T-Shirt

Outlier is another high-end brand that makes excellent products and one of my favorite items is their Ultrafine Merino T-shirt. It’s made from 17.5, 195gsm Merino Jersey Wool so the fabric is sturdy and drapes a bit better than many other merino t-shirts. And it comes in a lot of nice colors. But like all other Outlier products, the ultra-high-quality comes at a very high price.

The Outlier Ultrafine Merino T-shirt costs $110 each or three for $295.

Unbound Merino Wool T-Shirt

Unbound is another small company offering 100% ultra-fine 17.5 microns, 190g Merino wool shirts at affordable prices. I own a few of their shirts and while their shirts might not be quite as nice as other 100% merino shirts on our list, the price is a bit cheaper.

Uniqlo Airism Shirts

When it comes to budget basics, it’s impossible to beat Uniqlo’s Airism line of shirts. We own a few different Airism items and they’re not terrible but they certainly aren’t nearly as nice or perform as well as the other items on this list — but they’re cheap.

Women’s Travel Shirts

Ok, here’s the deal… there aren’t a ton of “performance” shirts for women that aren’t ugly. But here are a few decent items we’ve found:

• Bluffworks Womens : Bluffworks has recently released a line of women’s travel clothing that looks very promising.
• Ministry of Supply is a great choice for high-performance clothing that still looks fashionable. And while their prices aren’t cheap, we consider them very reasonable. They also have nice dresses and other items.
• Unbound Merino has a black v-neck 100% merino shirt in a women’s cut for $65.
• Anatomie has a number of high-end cute tops made from travel-friendly fabrics but they’re expensive.
• Lululemon has some decent options but many of their items lean heavily into athleisure.

Cold Weather Travel Clothing

Most of the items on this list will work well in colder weather but you’ll want to pair them with other items to achieve maximum warmth. The key is layering—which basically means combining a few lighter layers to achieve warmth without the bulk.

Base Layers

A base layer is technically anything that is worn directly on your skin. Socks and underwear fall into this category but it also includes items like shirts, undershirts, and long underwear.

In the winter we’ll throw on long-sleeve merino wool or synthetic long underwear and this helps keep us warm and dry when we’re outside all day.

For the best selection, I recommend checking out REI as they carry all the major long underwear brands. If you’re trying to save a little money, check out Uniqlo’s  HeatTech  line of long underwear since it is cheap.

A mid-layer is anything that is worn between your base layer and your outer layer. Its main purpose is insulation and it can be a sweater, vest, down jacket, hoodie, or just about anything. Sometimes the mid-layer can act as an outer layer if the weather isn’t too cold.

When it comes to tech-wear, the main pieces are Merino wool sweaters/jackets, fleece jackets, and down (or a synthetic variation) jackets. The piece just needs to allow internal moisture (sweat) to evaporate through the fabric. It’s also nice if the piece is lightweight and durable.

Fleece is always a popular choice because it provides a good amount of warmth, durability, and breathability without being too bulky. There is also a variation of fleece called hard fleece — which is basically a fleece with a smoother and more durable exterior. Most hard fleece garments are also more water-resistant than normal fleece.

There are hundreds of fleece jackets available on the market at all price points, so we’d check out the selection at REI and buy whatever fits your budget.

Another popular choice is down jackets — although a lot of companies now use synthetic down ( Primaloft , Coreloft, etc.) and many people prefer synthetic material to natural down. Synthetic down is incredibly lightweight, compressible, breathable, and it retains warmth even when wet.

It is crazy how compressible natural and synthetic down jackets are — some can compress to the size of a shoe. When compared to a fleece jacket, a synthetic down jacket is more water-resistant , wind resistant, packable, and lighter. 

Nearly every outdoor brand makes lightweight down/synthetic down jackets. One of the most popular and fashionable brands is Patagonia — check out both Amazon and REI for the best selection. The  Patagonia Nano Puff jacket is probably the most popular lightweight puff jacket on the market so it’s no wonder it’s a favorite among experienced travelers (it’s what we use).

Outerwear is generally the final layer and it is what protects you from the elements (wind, rain, snow, etc.). The problem with outerwear is that it encompasses a huge range of garments that perform a huge range of functions. It can be anything from a simple waterproof jacket for summer showers, to large winter coats capable of withstanding a harsh Scandinavian winter.

I’ll start off by diving into  waterproof jackets since that is probably what most people are interested in learning about.

Most traditional waterproof jackets are called hard shells . These are 100% waterproof and they have that plastic-y feel and sound. If you want the ultimate protection from the elements, this is your choice.

However, being impermeable to the elements means that the material doesn’t breathe — this is less than ideal because it doesn’t allow your body’s sweat to evaporate. Basically, it traps moisture and makes you feel all clammy.

Some high-end hardshell jackets have breathable fabric, but even those aren’t as breathable as softshells (which we’ll talk about later).

Unsurprisingly, most waterproof jackets are made by outdoor companies, so trying to find a stylish one isn’t super easy. However, there are plenty of decent-looking options by Marmot, Patagonia, and The North Face.

However, in the summer I generally recommend that a traditional rain jacket is unnecessary — mainly because it doesn’t rain a lot and most jackets are too heavy for summer travel.

However, Ultralight Rain Jackets are super lightweight (they only weigh a few ounces) and they can be packed into a pocket, so they’re easy to carry around in a daypack. Ultralight rain jackets won’t have very good breathability, but you’ll only be wearing them in the rain, so it isn’t a huge issue.

The best ultralight rain jackets are the  Outdoor Research Helium II , Marmot Super Mica , and the  Montane Minimus  (they all weigh under 10 oz).

When it comes to breathability, it doesn’t get any better than a softshell jacket. Softshell jackets aren’t technically 100% waterproof, but they’re essentially waterproof. They’re well-suited for urban travel because they’re more comfortable than a hard shell and they’re more stylish.

Again, there are hundreds of softshell jackets, so I recommend visiting REI (click here for Men’s and Women’s ) to see which ones fit your budget and style preference.

Heavy Coats

If you’re traveling during the winter, you may consider bringing a heavy winter coat . In some instances, you may be completely comfortable by layering a base layer, a few mid-layers, and an outer layer. But, sometimes, you need a heavy coat — especially if you’re traveling to Northern or Eastern Europe in the dead of winter.

Puffy down coats provide an amazing warmth-to-weight ratio — which is always something to consider when traveling. Combine that down coat with a base layer and a warm mid-layer, and you’ll be staying toasty. Natural down is the warmest, but it becomes ineffective if it gets wet.

On the other hand, synthetic down isn’t quite as warm, but it still works if it gets wet and it dries quicker. Different coats have different amounts of water-repellant, so this is something to take into consideration.

For the best selection of insulated coats , I recommend checking out REI  simply because they have the best selection. Look for one that fits your personal style.

If you’re looking for the ultimate protection from the elements, you’ll want a standard waterproof, winter coat. A lot of coats have a 3-in-1 system that contains a waterproof outer shell and an interior insulated lining. Again, REI is a good place to start your search because they have the best selection.

Unbound Merino

Unbound Merino's clothes are woven from ultra-soft, stretchy, non-wrinkling wool that wicks away sweat and promises to keep odors at bay.

The selection is somewhat limited, but it's great for basics.

When it comes to travel apparel, Unbound Merino is tough to beat. Crafted from premium merino wool boasting super-fine, silky fibers, the fabrics are not only not itchy but are also softer, stretchier, and more wrinkle-resistant than many cotton weaves. Wool is naturally antimicrobial and sweat-wicking, too, meaning it won't harbor odor-causing bacteria. The brand's active-meets-casual pieces are just the thing for travel days, athleisure outfits, and sporty weekend looks.

You'll mostly find athleisure and loungewear clothing, but there are some good trousers and knitwear items, too.

Alo is technically a yoga apparel brand, but it makes some excellent athleisure and loungewear pieces for comfy everyday ensembles. The brand has also expanded its offerings to include things like work-ready trousers, knit sweaters, bodysuits, and sporty dresses.

We love Alo's 7/8 High-waist Airlift Legging on account of its extra-wide waistband and soft fabric that lifts and sculpts your curves. When going for a more laid-back look, we'd rock the slouchy Alcolade Sweatpant with a pair of sneakers.

Best for Business Travel

Madewell carries lots of professional-looking pieces, like blouses, bodysuits, button-ups, trousers, and midi dresses.

The men's collection isn't as extensive as the women's.

Madewell is known for its denim, and while we certainly love the jeans, it's also a great place to shop for a work trip. From sophisticated dresses and tailored pants to chic blouses, button-ups, and bodysuits, you'll find a range of high-quality, professional-looking pieces.

The Harlow Pant is one of our favorites for business-casual and business-professional outfits. This best-seller features a high-rise, wide-leg cut and a drapey, breathable blend of cotton and Tencel. (It's also available in a curvy fit , with a contoured waistband and extra room through the hips and thighs.)

Best Sustainable

Besides its impressive collection of classy, travel-ready clothes, we appreciate Everlane's commitment to reducing waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The brand leans seasonless but has some cold- and warm-weather pieces available.

Everlane carries a mostly seasonless collection of travel-ready apparel, including jogger-trouser hybrid pants, jeans in on-trend yet versatile cuts, elegant sweaters, classy Oxford shirts, everyday crewnecks, cotton dresses, and jumpsuits. The brand is also dedicated to sustainability, with a waste-minimizing supply chain and a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by over 50 percent by 2030.

The Dream Pant is one of our go-tos for travel days. These pants look like tailored trousers but feel like stretchy joggers, plus the fabric is wrinkle-resistant and (according to Everlane) "comfortable enough to nap in."

Best Athleisure

Lululemon carries not only top-notch athleisure wear, but also pieces you can wear to work that feel like lounge clothes.

Though the sizes can run a little small, the Align collection stretches to fit even if you fluctuate sizes.

We pretty much always pack at least one Lululemon item when traveling. Originally a yoga apparel brand, it now offers an impressive range of loungewear and athleisure pieces, including leggings in virtually every cut, style, and color. You'll even find work-appropriate garments, like trousers, poplin shirts, and blazers that feel like athleisure wear. The prices can be steep, but you can often strike gold in the discounted " We Made Too Much " section.

Lululemon launched its uber-popular, borderline-famous Align Pant in 2015. While we certainly like the original, the pocketed version is ideal for travel — and it's made with the same buttery-soft fabric and super-wide, high-rise waistband. We also like the slightly looser-fitting Align High-rise Jogger , which has pockets big enough to hold a smartphone .

Travel + Leisure / Alexander Huang

Best for Capsule Wardrobes

This affordable luxury brand has pieces you can dress up or down and wear in multiple seasons.

While many cashmere and silk items are machine washable, the brand still recommends hand washing.

Quince is a relatively new clothing brand but has gained a loyal following since its 2020 launch. When you browse the site, you'll find affordable pieces made from premium materials, like cashmere, natural silk, and linen. There's even a chart on each product page that breaks down exactly how it gets the prices so low. Just the thing for building a capsule wardrobe, the high-quality, multi-season garments can be mixed and matched to create endless outfits. Quince also has an almost unheard-of 365-day return window.

We like the Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater, which comes in women's and men's sizes. We're also big fans of the Washable Stretch Silk Blouse because it's not only machine washable, but it’s also versatile enough to wear with a skirt, jeans, shorts, or pants.

Best Budget

Amazon essentials.

Amazon's own clothing brand has accessibly priced travel basics, loungewear, professional attire, and swimsuits for men, women, and kids.

The "try before you buy" option is only available for Prime members.

If you're on a budget, look no further than Amazon. The mega-retailer has many private label brands, including a very accessibly priced clothing line, Amazon Essentials. There's tons of great stuff for men, women, and kids, including wardrobe basics, loungewear, dresses, sweaters, underwear, swimsuits, and even workwear. Prime members can get their items within a couple of days (sometimes even with same-day delivery) and take advantage of the "try before you buy" perk. This allows you to order items to try on and ship them back without being charged for anything if you decide you don't want them.

The Women's Short-sleeve Maxi is breathable, stretchy, lightweight, and versatile — everything you want in a travel dress. Amazon Essentials also has many affordable short-sleeve men's shirts, including henleys, V-necks, and crewnecks, like this two-pack of Regular-fit Short-sleeve Pocket T-shirts .

Best Size-inclusive

Girlfriend Collective

Many styles run from XXS to 6XL, plus they're made of stretchy, flexible fabrics that won't wrinkle in your suitcase.

The brand suggests using a wash bag or microfiber filter when washing and hanging items to dry.

Girlfriend Collective has one of the most inclusive size ranges out there — many of its styles come in 11 sizes, running from XXS to 6XL. The brand carries fitness apparel, athleisure, loungewear, bodysuits, dresses, and outerwear – all stretchy, breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and packable. Most items are made of fabrics sourced from recycled plastic bottles, and you can even recycle the pieces you're done wearing through the ReGirlfriend program.

The brand's Compressive Pocket Legging is a stellar choice for travel. We like how the soft yet sturdy fabric holds you in without restricting movement, and the deep side pockets are big enough for a phone or passport.

Best for Shapewear

Spanx has shapewear for every outfit, along with thoughtfully designed clothing items you can wear while traveling, to work, and on weekends.

Many items come in limited colors, but the selection is getting broader.
