Ghost Announces Re-Imperatour U.S.A. 2023

Citi and Artist Presales Begin Tuesday, February 14 th

Tickets on sale to general public friday, february 17th at 10am local on  ticketmaster.com, for approved artist images and hi-res tour art, please download  here ..

Ghost has revealed details of its upcoming RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 summer tour with special guest Amon Amarth. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 27-date tour kicks off on Wednesday, August 2nd in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band’s Monday, September 11th return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Ghost continues to elevate and reaffirm its status as one of the world’s most esteemed and celebrated creative forces. Accumulating well over a billion streams, the GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock band continues to bring the  “euphoric spectacle”  (ROLLING STONE) of its live shows to ever-growing and increasingly impassioned crowds, headlining arena tours including sold out shows from The Forum in Los Angeles and Barclays Center in New York to London’s O2 Arena and Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. In March 2022, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES reported in a Calendar cover story that Ghost had  “conquered metal and the charts”  when its fifth album  IMPERA  debuted at #1 in a sweep of the U.S. album charts, entering the BILLBOARD 200 at #2 and bowing at #1 in the band’s native Sweden as well as Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in the UK (#2), Netherlands (#2), Belgium (#2), Canada (#3), Australia (#3), France (#5), Ireland (#5), and more. Produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace — and featuring “Spillways”—hailed as a  “sweetly constructed rock tune”  by THE NEW YORK TIMES, the GRAMMY-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine,” and Active Rock #1 radio single “Hunter’s Moon” —  IMPERA  finds Ghost transported centuries forward from the Black Plague era of its previous album, 2018 Best Rock Album GRAMMY nominee  Prequelle —or as ROLLING STONE put it,  “Ghost predicted the pandemic, Now the metal band is foretelling the fall of empires.” The result is the most ambitious and lyrically incisive entry in the Ghost canon: Over the course of  IMPERA’ s 12-song cycle, empires rise and fall, would-be messiahs ply their hype (financial and spiritual alike), prophecies are foretold as the skies fill with celestial bodies divine and man-made… All in all, the most current and topical Ghost subject matter to date is set against a hypnotic and darkly colorful melodic backdrop making  IMPERA  a listen like no other — yet unmistakably, quintessentially Ghost.

TICKETS:  Tickets will be available starting with a Citi cardmember presale (details below) and Artist presale on Tuesday, February 14th. Additional presales will be available throughout the week before the general on sale starting Friday, February 17th at 10am local time on  Ticketmaster.com .

CITI PRESALE:  Citi is the official card of Ghost’s RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, February 14th at 11am ET until Thursday, February 16th at 10pm local time through the Citi Entertainment program. Ghost Will Haunt U.S. Amphitheaters on a Summer Tour

Papa Emeritus IV is coming to an amphitheater near you. Ghost , the Swedish hard-rock band led by the man of a thousand faces, Tobias Forge, has announced a U.S. summer tour .

Titled the Re-Imperatour U.S.A. 2023, the trek begins August 2nd in Concord, California, and plays 27 dates, wrapping up September 11th in Los Angeles. Along the way, the tour hits cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Tampa, Austin, and Phoenix. Fellow Swedish metalheads Amon Amarth open all dates except the L.A. closer.

Ghost released their latest album, Impera , last year, a record that rails against bloated nations, empty leaders, and the glorification of stupidity. “We now have mechanisms within our own Western empire who are actively trying to, and to some degree have, created this time machine where we’re regressing,” Forge told Rolling Stone . “We’re flattening the earth. We’re submitting to stupidity, which is fucking unbelievable.”

Ghost are, regardless of whether you're particularly into corpse painted, Satanic-inspired heavy metal, one band that you should not miss live. Their concerts are not simply events to watch but experiential, jaw-dropping journeys to embark upon, and here's why: The Swedish sextet, clad in black hooded gowns and pointed beard-masks (yes, this is a thing) are led by their singer, known as Papa Emeritus, who dons full skull make-up and the robes and hat of a Roman Catholic pope (aside from the upside-down crosses adorning them). As well as their appearances, the band add to the intoxicating atmosphere of their shows with a backdrop of faux stained glass windows, and burn incense to give the audience the impression of being in a church, about to undergo something more than simply watching a group of men play musical instruments on a stage. They achieve this by including the audience in their twisted act, for example during the song Body and Blood, scantily-clad women appeared at the front of the stage offering the 'Eucharist' of a goblet of blood (aka wine) to the lucky fans in the front row.

I saw Ghost at the Fillmore Silver Spring, shorty after the release of their highly anticipated second album, Infestissumam, and was, frankly, blown away by the quality of their live show. Their appearances and Satan-worshipping act are contrasted by the liveliness of their music, which while categorized as heavy or black metal, is definitely more riff and vocal-driven than most metal, with songs such as the single Monstrance Clock and even an amped-up cover of the Beatles' Here Comes The Sun as part of their catchy, dancable set.

Even if you are the biggest metal-phobe around, you should go see Ghost. If heavy metal is your jam, but you're really not into the whole make-up/ crazy outfit thing, you should go see Ghost. If you're a fan or the music but are undecided on paying for a ticket, you should most definitely go see Ghost. The entire experience is something intoxicatingly unforgettable, and you will not regret it!

The wife and I got into the game a bit late but Ghost is as much a part of our yearly plans as is eating, sleeping, and hydrating. We were fortunate to have caught their last two rituals in Sweden last year and were able to capture video of Papa III being pulled off stage during Monstrance Clock. We were so happy that we made the trip from the states because seeing the end of Papa III in videos is nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in person, from the barrier, and right up front. This band is very exciting to watch and being able to share the experience with my wife has made our evenings with Ghost that much better. My wife met Papa III last year and we've had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Copia 3 times this year during the meet and greets in New York and Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to meeting him again 4 more times out of the 6 rituals we'll be attending in December. We also already have our tickets and vacation planned for the 2 upcoming rituals taking place in Sweden in February 2019. When they make their way back to the states in 2019, we will begin planning our schedules around their tour dates. Here's a short back story as to why they are so important to me. My wife and I were just a couple of months away from signing the official court documents stating we were divorced. While trying to keep things amicable we would meet to discuss things and we'd often listen to Ghost. By the time they would be coming Philadelphia that year, we would have been attending as two single individuals and no longer married. We'd have fun listening to them and as that common ground grew stronger, so did we and slowly began reconciling. By the time they did come to Philadelphia that year, we attended as a happily married couple and continue to do so today. Getting my wife back, I can honestly say, is all thanks to Ghost and I couldn't be more grateful to them or happier sharing the experience with anyone else except for Kelly.

The concert at Liseberg amusement Park was amazing. They opened doors at 11:00 am and there was already like 30 people waiting for the concert impatiently. Security guards and workers of the Amusement Park were very nice and help people when there was an incident outside the park.

The concert started at 8:00 pm without any problem, the crowd went crazy when they went on stage. The setlist was the following:

- Square Hammer

- From the Pinnacle to the Pit

- Elizabeth

- Con clavi con Dio

- Per aspera ad Inferi

- Body and Blood

- Devil Church

- Year Zero

- Spokosonat

- Absolution

- Deus in Absentia

- Monstrance Clock.

At the end of the last show was when 2 bodyguards came on stage and dragged Papa Emeritus III from stage and Papa Emeritus Zero came in, anouncing that the party was over and a new era was about to start.

I only got into Ghost recently and caught their show last night in Toronto.

I decided to get some cheap tickets because I liked the music and thought they'd be fun to see live.

They by far exceeded anything I was expecting. The creepy church vibe, use of incense(which I have never encountered before, very nice touch!), Papa engaging the audience at every opportunity and even took a few minutes just to chit chat and kept us roaring and laughing for more. The use of costumes and masks was amazing.

Being an introvert I don't really go out much, and when I do I just kind of sit there and enjoy the music and the show. This is the first band that's made me get up from my chair and actually get into the show. Next time they come to the area, I'm definitely saving up and treating myself to WAY better seating!

Oh my Ghost, this is the live ritual gig experience your soul is crying out for. Full disclaimer: I love Ghost to bits and have been preaching my dark passion for years. Seeing them live again - this time in a bigger arena off the back of a couple more hit albums - reaffirms the faith.

Go and see Ghost and you will get a diverse setlist drawn from the band's spectacular back catalogue. You will get theatrics and pyrotechnics. You will get both humour and deep emotion, dark anthems and sublime instrumentals and an uplifting sense that you a witnessing something novel and special.

Ghost are - musically, aesthetically, spiritually - something to cherish and the live experience is one that is fun, compelling, cathartic and oh-so-damn-rock-n-roll. Go worship and have the time of your (after)life.

I can see Ghost every night and never get bored. It's not just the band and music, Tobias has created characters, including his own, for this band that are incredibly humble and patient with their fans. While the material can be considered risque, you will see children younger than 10 years old attending that are not only having the time of their lives, but participating in the meet and greets with their parents. Everything about these shows from the music, to the costumes, the characters, and the theatrics is so very much entertaining. We know as fans that there is so much more to look forward to with the future of Ghost and we'll have the opportunity to enjoy them for many more years. It is very exciting when tomorrow becomes today and you're standing in front eagerly awaiting Ashes to start.

If you have Ghost, you have everything.

Theatre; spectacle; a sense of cult worship; dark humour; thick fugs of incense; electric, otherwordly energy; lighting and atmospherics; collective frenzy; and most of all, the sweet music of the night.

Ghost are beautiful for so many reasons. Beneath their sublime subversive style - iconoclastic and gleefully irreverent - is a musical powerhouse making the most compelling and catchy rock in this epoch. The craftsmanship is incredible. The mystique is immense. It's a joy to behold in the flesh (and blood) and if you have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of Ghost in person, surrender to it.

Honestly, Ghost was one of the greatest entertainment experiences I've had. Join them in their ritual and hail your Master...

This was the best show I have ever been to (I have seen a lot too). Ghost put on an electric performance with great theatrics as well as fun conversational bits while the musicians took a couple minutes to get water, wipe the sweat off from under those masks, etc. We were also delighted by the pyrotechnics, fog machines, and surprise mummy dust confetti! Well executed and the band sounded amazing live. I wish I had gotten tickets for the following night too! I will definitely be seeing them when they come back into town. Ghost really knows how to stimulate all their fans' senses. Many thanks to the band for their commitment to their fans and the melodic tunes they share with us. Keep them coming please!!!

The Ghost show was truly amazing. For me, this was mainly due to two things:

1. Each and every member of this band knows his instrument very well, and they play their songs flawlessly and with ease. Leaving them energy to interact with the crowd while still not missing a note/beat.

2. Their concept is so well thought through. From the incense and small unveiling ritual before their set starts to the sisters of sin and perfected visual in set, movements and costumes, everything works brilliantly. And with Papa giving some background info to songs and rituals, you really get the feeling you are part of a well-oiled ritual.

I am very glad I've been to the show, and can't wait to see this band again :)

Awesome band! I had a older friend come with last night to the Stockholm show and even thou she said "It's not exactly my favourite but it was a terrific show, tunes to sing along to and this isn't the last time we do this!" with a huge smile on her face. This was my second Ritual, i love the costume changes, you really feel like your seeing a theatrical show instead of a regular concert, I'm use to sitting up front but this time sat in the balcony to see a spectacular light show and pyrotechnics, we sat in the upper balcony and could feel the heat from the pyro effects.I only wish i could have been yp front closer to Cardinal Copia,to get his blessings. Will not be the last time i go to see Ghost!

Inside Ghost's first US show of 2022: new songs, new look, new era

Papa Emeritus IV makes his official live debut on Ghost's US tour with Volbeat and we got a good look at the next stage of their evolution - including new-look Nameless Ghouls

Ghost Nameless Ghouls 2022

Sweden's satanic majesties Ghost have unveiled a whole new stage show and aesthetic for the start of their US tour with Danish rockers Volbeat . On January 25th the band played their first full show in almost two years when they kicked off their tour at Reno Event Centre, marking also the first full performance from Papa Emeritus IV since the former Cardinal Copia was annointed in Mexico City on March 3rd 2020 after the on-stage 'death' of Papa Nihil (video below).

So what has Papa been up to in the 693 days since we last saw him? Well, a whole lot of overhauling, it seems. With this show giving us our first proper look at the new era of Ghost, we thought it high time to look at what we know about Impera so far...

Metal Hammer line break

The new song 'Kaisarion' is EPIC

Ghost kicked off the new era with a completely new song from their upcoming album Impera . Titled Kaisarion , the song is exactly the kind of ludicrous, over-the-top genius we desperately needed from Ghost after the past couple of years, complete with a Halford-worthy scream that has us thrusting our fists at the sky just thinking about it.

Sure, Prequelle had us grinning ear-to-ear at times (goddamn, we're going to miss the sax solo of Miasma ) but the album's plague themes hit just a little too close to home these days, so having something utterly joyous to kick off the show feels like exactly the right kind of move. Plus, it feels like Ghost's brand of anthemic arena metal is now drawing from the likes of Boston , Journey and Bon Jovi , which might piss off the purists who wish the band sounded more like Entombed but is absolutely perfect for those of us who are out to have a great time with riffs, sing-alongs and Satan.

Things got a little Spinal Tap

As the saying goes, "twice the pride double the fall". Ghost have been playing to massive crowds for a good while now, but that doesn't mean there aren't teething problems after two years without gigs. The band's epic reveal at the climax of the Kaisarion intro didn't quite go to plan when the curtain covering the stage never shifted (which, unless Ghost are going Gorillaz, seems like a slight problem when you've set up a massive visual extravaganza).

Still, if you can't laugh...

LITERALLY HAD TO COVER MY FACE WITH MY PILLOW TO STOP FROM WAKING MY WHOLE HOUSE UP LAUGHING AT THE CURTAIN GETTING STUCK, GHOST IS BACK BABYYYYY pic.twitter.com/kShttpk2Xw January 26, 2022

But fans were happy to just see the band again

Curtain snafu aside, Ghost marked the epoch of a new era with all the visual flair fans have come to expect. The stage dressing looks largely the same as it did on A Tour Named Death , evoking a massive cathedral (which, considering the band's religious overtones makes perfect sense). That doesn't mean the band didn't have a whole new aesthetic to show off, however.

New album, new look

They might not have ditched the corpsepaint and masks, but there's no denying Ghost are looking decidedly different for this new era. Papa seems to be going through more costume changes than Cher and the new-look Nameless Ghouls are utterly terrifying in their gasmasks and jackboots, looking like villains straight out of GI Joe. We kinda love it, though...

Some internet sleuths already spotted the new-look Nameless Ghouls

As it turns out, we'd already been teased with the new-look Nameless Ghouls when the band put out promo pics for Papa Emeritus IV. While some of us were delighted to see the new and shiny Papa, some clever souls spotted the Nameless Ghouls standing menacingly in the background. Good sleuthing, that.

People love Papa's new look

Cardinal Copia wasn't exactly a slouch when it came to outfits on the Prequelle run, but coming after the dandy Papa Emeritus III it was hard not to feel like he couldn't quite match his svelte predecessor. It turns out it may just have been a lack of wardrobe access, however as the new-look Papa Emeritus IV is setting a whole new bar for fiendish flair.

But are divided on the new-look Nameless Ghouls

As exciting as it is to have a whole new era of Ghost to dive into, its also inevitable that some fans will pine for the band's classic look. The Nameless Ghouls in particular have split opinion, which isn't entirely surprising considering some fans used to love cosplaying as the vital cogs in Ghost's machine. The unspoken bright-side that everyone seems to miss is that gasmasks are surely the perfect accessory for ensuring no tour dates get pulled due to the pandemic...

I'm semi-ambivalent about the new Nameless Ghoul designs, but overall I like them. The industrial helmets and floofy sleeves fit the new Impera era's theme of rebuilding, and it makes them look scrappier, less refined, more workhorse-y. pic.twitter.com/yVPKLql8we January 26, 2022

Ghost's set is positively rammed with bangers

After kicking things off with a brand new tune, Ghost wasted absolutely no time in getting stuck into the kind of floor-filling, crowd-filling anthems that have made them into a headline sensation. With four albums already out and a fifth on the way (as well as a smattering of EPs and 7" singles) it was inevitable that they would need to tighten the set up some, but by this point they've amassed such an arsenal of arena-worthy songs that it's almost ridiculous. Rats , From The Pinnacle To The Pit, Mary On A Cross, Cirice... All in a row! We're honestly worried for our voices when the band come to the UK, particularly when the likes of Kiss The Go Goat and Square Hammer pop up.

Hunter's Moon is already sounding like a Ghost classic

Though we didn't know it back in September, Hunter's Moon turned out to be the first song from Impera proffered for our listening pleasure. At the time, the song was released as a stand-alone with no album release info offered, tied to the release of last year's horror sequel Halloween Kills . As utterly perfect as it was hearing the song in the cinema playing out over the closing credits (after a healthy dose of splatter, no less), its appearance in the setlist (sandwiched between Cirice and Faith ) cements the fact that Hunter's Moon is a straight-up banger . More of this on the album, please.

No sign of Call Me Little Sunshine, though

It's only been a week since Ghost released Call Me Little Sunshine and announced the release date of their fifth album, but we're already desperate to hear it. If Hunter's Moon is a stylish, deadly floor-filler in the vein of the band's Prequelle material, Call Me Little Sunshine dials the clock back just a little further to percussive riffing of Meliora . Unfortunately the song didn't make an appearance on the first show of the tour, but with plenty more shows to come (and more time to drill the song into our brains) there's still hope we'll get it further down the road.

Ghost can't resist a great cover

Ghost have never been a band afraid to journey through cover country, tackling the likes of Roky Erickson, ABBA and The Beatles over the years. Hell, the first appearance of Papa Emeritus IV after his inauguration was during a televised stream by  fellow Swedish rockers The Hellacopters , where he came out to sing a rendition of the Rolling Stones ' Sympathy For The Devil. The new set featured a cover more directly in metal territory, however - Ghost's own rendition of Enter Sandman , as featured on last year's Metallica Blacklist covers collection . Kicking off their encore it makes sense Ghost would want something massive, and it doesn't come much bigger than Metallica .

Nine is the magic number

While we knew Ghost's congregation seemed to balloon with each new album, we weren't quite prepared for the clergy to fill out too. We counted no less than nine members of the band on-stage when the band took their final bow, meaning Ghost now have (at least) as many members as Slipknot . God forbid the two bands ever tour together; those poor, poor caterers.

With their US co-headline tour taking them right up to March 3, Ghost will have about a month to recuperate before jumping right back into the fire with a massive European and UK arena tour . By that time, Impera will be on shelves and, if current singles are anything to go by, lodged in brains, promising some utterly mammoth sing-alongs. See you down the front.

Impera is due March 11 via Loma Vista.

Ghost's US tour resumes today (January 27), for the full list of tour dates visit the band's official website , the band's UK tour kicks off April 9 at Manchester's AO Arena

GHOST Announce RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023

Ghost has revealed details of its upcoming RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 summer tour with special guest Amon Amarth. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 27-date tour kicks off on Wednesday, August 2nd in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Milwaukee on August 12 at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band's Monday, September 11th return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Ghost continues to elevate and reaffirm its status as one of the world's most esteemed and celebrated creative forces. In March 2022, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES reported in a Calendar cover story that Ghost had "conquered metal and the charts” when its fifth album IMPERA debuted at #1 in a sweep of the U.S. album charts, entering the BILLBOARD 200 at #2 and bowing at #1 in the band's native Sweden as well as Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in the UK (#2), Netherlands (#2), Belgium (#2), Canada (#3), Australia (#3), France (#5), Ireland (#5), and more. Produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace — and featuring “Spillways”—hailed as a “sweetly constructed rock tune” by THE NEW YORK TIMES, the GRAMMY-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine,” and Active Rock #1 radio single “Hunter’s Moon” — IMPERA finds Ghost transported centuries forward from the Black Plague era of its previous album, 2018 Best Rock Album GRAMMY nominee Prequelle —or as ROLLING STONE put it, “Ghost predicted the pandemic, Now the metal band is foretelling the fall of empires." The result is the most ambitious and lyrically incisive entry in the Ghost canon: Over the course of IMPERA’ s 12-song cycle, empires rise and fall, would-be messiahs ply their hype (financial and spiritual alike), prophecies are foretold as the skies fill with celestial bodies divine and man-made… All in all, the most current and topical Ghost subject matter to date is set against a hypnotic and darkly colorful melodic backdrop making IMPERA a listen like no other — yet unmistakably, quintessentially Ghost.

TICKETS: Tickets will be available starting with a Citi cardmember presale (details below) and Artist presale on Tuesday, February 14th. Additional presales will be available throughout the week before the general on sale starting Friday, February 17th at 10am local time in person at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater and at Ticketmaster.com,.

GHOST is continuing to tour in support of its fifth album, "Impera" , which sold 70,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in its first week of release to land at position No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It marked the third top 10 album — and fifth top 40-charting set — for the Swedish act.

"Impera" landed at position No. 1 in Germany and Sweden, No. 2 in the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium and Norway, No. 3 in Australia, No. 5 in France and Ireland, and No. 20 in Italy.

"Impera" was released on March 11. The 12-song effort was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace .

GHOST mastermind Tobias Forge worked on the follow-up to 2018's "Prequelle" with Åhlund and Swedish co-writers Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare , whose credits include Madonna and Lady Gaga .

In March 2020, at final show of GHOST 's "Prequelle" tour in Mexico City, Mexico, the band officially introduced Papa Emeritus IV , the new character who is fronting the act for its "Impera" album phase.

Forge performed as a "new" Papa Emeritus on each of the band's first three LPs, with each version of Papa replacing the one that came before it. Papa Emeritus III was retired in favor of Cardinal Copia before the release of "Prequelle" .

MASTODON was one of the "Best Metal Performance" nominees at the 64th annual Grammy Awards , which was held on April 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The progressive metallers were nominated for their song "Pushing The Tides" , the first single from their latest album, "Hushed And Grim" , which came out in October.

The follow-up to 2017's "Emperor Of Sand" , "Hushed And Grim" was recorded at West End Sound , which is located inside of Ember City , the rehearsal facility that members of MASTODON manage in Atlanta. Helming the effort was Grammy -winning producer/mixer/engineer David Bottrill , who has previously worked with MUSE , DREAM THEATER and TOOL , among many others.

The "Hushed And Grim" artwork was created by longtime MASTODON collaborator Paul Romano , who also designed the sleeves for "Crack The Skye" , "Blood Mountain" , "Leviathan" and more.

"Emperor Of Sand" debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. That LP was nominated for the 2018 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album," and its opening track, "Sultan's Curse" , won the Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance."

Ghost: Members, albums, songs and tour dates

Band Ghost

We can’t forget the value that Sweden has brought to pop and rock music. ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, Opeth, and many other pop and rock bands came out of Sweden. One of the most important of these bands is Ghost. We have gathered all the information you need to know about the Swedish rock band Ghost .

Table of Contents

Among the Swedish rock bands that have garnered international attention, Ghost (also known as Ghost B.C. in the US) stands out as a true revelation in the realm of heavy metal and hard rock. Formed in Linköping in 2006, Ghost combines a unique blend of influences, including classic metal, arena rock, pop rock, rock, doom metal, and a touch of the macabre.

The Swedish band Ghost is known for its theatrical and enigmatic image. The band members are known as “ Nameless Ghouls ” and wear costumes and masks that conceal their identities.

How was the band Ghost formed?

The group members had known each other for a long time. One day Tobias Forge decided to form a group. This idea was welcomed by all Ghost members.

In 2006, they formed the band Ghost in Linköping, Sweden. At that time the members were still playing in other bands. The official formation took place only in 2008.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Deutschland , Tobias Forge (Cardinal Copia) talks about the creation of Ghost as follows:

“I’ve been playing death and black metal ever since the early ’90s, so it wasn’t like, “Oh, I’m gonna come up with a completely different thing, like the devil.” I’ve been delving into devilish themes ever since my first band, which was a death metal band. So, the idea wasn’t very original; it just felt natural. Around 2006, 2007, and 2008, I had stepped away from the extreme metal scene. I wasn’t playing in a metal band anymore. Instead, I was playing bass in one band that was definitely not metal, and I had my own band that ventured into some sort of pop-rock territory. When Ghost emerged in my mind and the songs started to take shape, it just fit perfectly. It felt intuitive and natural, like this is where my pop sensibilities could merge with my metal background. It allowed me to express myself in a way that’s, well, I guess the word for it would be Gothic.

In addition to their other jobs, the band members continued to work on Ghost. In 2008, they left the other bands and started to concentrate on Ghost and the seeds started to bear their first fruits. Ghost released its first songs as a 3-track demo on MySpace in 2010.

The founding ghost members:.

The band Ghost consists of six members, Cardinal Copia , formerly known as Papa Emeritus  and five so-called Nameless Ghouls .

Each Nameless Ghoul embodies one of the elements earth, fire, water, wind, and the Aether (Omega) which is also represented by the corresponding element signs.

Some of the Ghost members’ names and faces were revealed in 2017. Here are the Ghost members unmasked:

Tobias Forge (Papa Emeritus and Cardinal Copia)

Tobias Forge, one of the founding members of Ghost, was born on March 3, 1991, in Linköping, Sweden.

He spent his childhood in the same house with his mother and older brother. It was not a very wealthy family. The family had different values than money. The family valued art, music, philosophy, and culture more than money. When people visited Tobias’ house and saw the paintings on the walls and the library, they thought it looked like a museum.

When Tobias became a teenager, he realized that he was uncomfortable with his Christian teacher’s authoritarian religious indoctrination. This behavior began to turn Tobias off religion. Then, influenced by the behavior of his step-mother, who lived in a different house with his father and behaved in the same way as his teacher, Tobias became increasingly distant from the Christian religion.

Tobias Forge started to make death metal when he was 13 years old . He started playing instruments and writing his own songs. Before forming Ghost, He was involved in several bands. One of the notable bands he was a part of was “ Repugnant ,” a Swedish death metal band formed in 1998.

Forge performed under the stage name “ Mary Goore ” during his time with Repugnant. While Repugnant did not achieve the same level of success as Ghost, it was an important stepping stone in Tobias Forge’s musical career.

Until 2006 Tobias had gained experience with many bands and in 2006 he decided to form Ghost.

Tobias Forge is the person behind the characters Papa Emeritus I (2010-2012), Papa Emeritus II (2012-2015), Papa Emeritus III (2015-2017), Papa Emeritus IV (2020-present) and Papa Emeritus Cardinal Copia – (2018-2020).

Tobias Forge unmasked

Papa Nihil (2018–2020)

Papa Nihil , also known as the “ Saxophone Ghoul ,” made his first notable appearance during Ghost’s “Popestar” tour in 2016. He is portrayed as an elderly, decrepit figure, often seen with a skull-faced mask and adorned in papal vestments. What sets him apart from the other Nameless Ghouls in the band is his unusual instrument of choice – the saxophone.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Papa Nihil is the ongoing speculation about his identity. While Ghost’s mastermind, Tobias Forge, has portrayed Papa Emeritus and other characters, he’s never confirmed whether he is also the man behind Papa Nihil. Some fans speculate that the character might represent a past Papa Emeritus, while others believe Papa Nihil could be a separate entity entirely. The ambiguity surrounding Papa Nihil’s identity adds a layer of mystique to Ghost’s elaborate mythos.

Papa Nihil’s real name is unknown.

Ghost members’ names and faces were revealed in 2017:

In April 2017, some names were made public on the Internet by former band member Simon Söderberg . Here are the names and faces of the Nameless Ghouls:

Simon Söderberg ( Alpha )

Per eriksson (fire).

  • Martin Persner (Omega, 2010-2016)

Per Eriksson , also known as “ Sodomizer ,” is one of the Nameless Ghouls. He was born on April 2, 1981 in Falun, Sweden.

He joined Ghost as a live guitarist in 2015 and became a Nameless Ghoul. Before he joined Ghost, he was a member of the bands Bloodbath and Katatonia

Per Eriksson (Fire)

In 2017, the shroud of anonymity began to lift as some of the Nameless Ghouls, including Simon Söderberg, revealed their identities. Alpha’s unmasking allowed fans to put a face to the music they had grown to love.

Unfortunately, the unveiling of Alpha’s identity coincided with a legal dispute between Simon Söderberg and the band’s frontman, Tobias Forge, who portrays the various incarnations of Papa Emeritus. Söderberg and other former Nameless Ghouls sued Forge over issues related to royalties and band ownership.

Due to the lack of evidence, the Linköping court has now dismissed the case. As a direct consequence, Forge’s former bandmates have to pay the legal costs of their ex-boss in the amount of 1.3 million Swedish kronor . The amount corresponds to about 127000 euros .

Martin Persner (Omega)

Martin Persner , known by his stage name “ Omega ,” was one of the original members of the Swedish heavy metal band Ghost. He played guitar in the band and was an integral part of Ghost’s early years. Omega joined Ghost when the band was first formed in 2008.

Martin Persner left Ghost in 2016 . His departure marked a significant change in the band’s lineup.

Martin Persner’s decision to leave Ghost was influenced by several factors, including creative differences and the desire to pursue other musical projects. After leaving Ghost, he went on to form a new band called “ Magna Carta Cartel ” and continued his musical career outside of the Ghost persona.

In an interview, Martin Persner talked about his decision and said:

“Hi. My name is Martin, and I’ve been a part of the rock band Ghost for 7 years. Some of you people know me as Omega, or Quintessence, or A Nameless Ghoul…. Since of July last year, 2016 that is, I am no longer part of Ghost, as some of you have noticed. Reasons why… we’ll take at another date.”

Ghost’s Discography

Ghost released 5 albums o far. Here are the albums by Ghost:

Opus Eponymous – 2010: A Dark Ritual Begins

In 2009, a demo recording featuring three self-produced songs and a 7-inch vinyl single titled “Elizabeth” and “Death Knell” was released through the German record label Iron Pegasus Records. Subsequently, on October 18, 2010, the debut album “Opus Eponymous” was released in Europe.

Ghost’s debut album, “Opus Eponymous,” burst onto the scene in 2010, shrouded in anonymity. The record, often referred to as their “ Black Mass ,” set the stage for what would become Ghost’s signature blend of ominous lyrics and catchy melodies. Songs like “ Ritual ” and “ Elizabeth ” introduced us to the unholy liturgy of Papa Emeritus and the Nameless Ghouls.

The album comprises nine songs, including two instrumental pieces, among them the four previously released tracks, which appeared in a reworked form.

In North America, the album was released on January 18, 2011, through Metal Blade Records , while in Japan, it came out on April 6 through Trooper Entertainment, featuring a cover version of The Beatles’ song “Here Comes the Sun” as a bonus track.

Prior to the album’s release, the band garnered attention for their complete anonymity and their decision to abstain from interviews or photoshoots.

Infestissumam – 2013: The Rise of the Antichrist

In 2013, Ghost unleashed “ Infestissumam ,” a grandiose follow-up that elevated their theatricality to new heights. This album delved deeper into themes of the occult and featured tracks like “ Year Zero ” and “ Secular Haze ,” showcasing Ghost’s ability to craft both sinister anthems and eerie ballads.

Musically speaking, “Infestissumam” is an impressive continuation of Ghost’s characteristic sound. The songs on this album are simultaneously catchy and dark. Tracks like “Year Zero” and “Secular Haze” perfectly capture the band’s mysterious atmosphere. Ghost masterfully combines captivating melodies with devilishly dark lyrics, giving the album a unique allure.

A significant part of Ghost’s appeal lies in their ability to approach the occult and the Satanic in a provocative yet intelligent manner. The lyrics of “Infestissumam” are filled with allusions to religion, sin, and the darker aspects of life. This has led the band to admiration and controversy, further solidifying their position as one of the most polarizing bands in the modern music scene.

“Infestissumam” is undoubtedly a milestone in Ghost’s career.

Meliora – 2015: The Birth of Papa Emeritus III

“ Meliora ” is Ghost’s third studio album and was released in 2015. The title “Meliora” is Latin for “better” or “improved,” signifying a pursuit of enhancement. In many ways, the album represents an artistic and musical improvement compared to the band’s previous works.

From a musical perspective, “Meliora” is a sensory delight. The songs on this album are masterfully arranged, featuring a blend of dark and catchy melodies. Tracks like “ Cirice ” and “ From the Pinnacle to the Pit ” are examples of Ghost’s ability to create earworms that simultaneously embed themselves in your memory and create a dark atmosphere.

Lyrically, “Meliora” delves deep into the occult and satanic themes that define Ghost. The lyrics skillfully play with religious symbols and metaphysical ideas, often infused with ironic yet dark poetry. This contributes to the mysterious and provocative nature of Ghost.

“Meliora” marked a pivotal moment in Ghost’s career. With the introduction of Papa Emeritus III, the band delivered an opus that garnered widespread acclaim. This album spawned the Grammy Award-winning hit “Cirice , “ as well as other gems like “ He Is ” and “ From the Pinnacle to the Pit .”

Prequelle – 2018 : The Plague and the Persona

“ Prequelle ” is a celebration for metal enthusiasts. The songs are skillfully arranged with powerful riffs, melodic hooks, and epic refrains. Tracks like “Rats” and “Dance Macabre” are catchy yet dark, showing the theatrical essence of Ghost perfectly.

Lyrically, “Prequelle” delves deep into themes of death, plague, and apocalypse. The lyrics are often metaphorical and symbolic, raising questions about the fate of humanity. This adds a certain depth and complexity to the album.

Ghost’s fourth studio album, “Prequelle,” offered a fresh narrative twist, centered around themes of the bubonic plague and the persona of Papa Nihil . Tracks like “ Rats ” and “ Dance Macabre ” showcased Ghost’s knack for crafting infectious hooks while maintaining their dark and enigmatic aura.

Prequelle - album cover

Impera – 2022: The Enigma Continues

Ghost’s fifth studio album, “Impera,” was released in 2022.

According to Tobias Forge, “ Impera ” delves into the rise and fall of great empires and the perpetual cycle of these historical processes. However, as the album progresses, it doesn’t always remain as specific as in the track “ Kaisarion ,” which alludes to Cleopatra’s offspring.

The subsequent track, “ Spillways ,” addresses the manifold seductions of sweet power in a somewhat more general language. Above all, it provides the necessary moments of release, something that Ghost has not denied itself since “ Meliora .” It’s noteworthy how, during the days of “Opus Eponymous,” occasional catchy melodies emerged from the doom-heavy mix – and today, it’s essentially the opposite.

And if you’ve been on the fence about catching Mick, Keith and Ronnie live because you fear exorbitant ticket prices, we’re happy to report that some shows have cheaper seats available than one might imagine.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we found on tickets was just $21 before fees on Vivid Seats.

The Rolling Stones new music

On Oct. 20, the Stones released their 26th American studio album,  “Hackney Diamonds,”  featuring special guests Paul McCartney, Elton John, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder.

Comprised of 12 hard-rocking tracks that wouldn’t be out of place alongside their singalong stadium anthems of yore, “Diamonds” shows that Mick, Keith and Ronnie still have their sticky fingers on rock and roll’s pulse.

“We wouldn’t have put this album out if we didn’t really like it,” Jagger, 80, told Jimmy Fallon. “We must say that we are quite pleased with it. We’re not big-headed but we hope you like it.”

If you’re looking to sample the record, we suggest starting with the fierce lead track “Angry” and the wistful ballad “Dreamy Skies.”

'The vibes around here are through the roof': The Ghost Inside returns to an old haunt

The Ghost Inside is set to perform May 3 at the Palladium in Worcester.

Members of The Ghost Inside may not feel as young as they once were. But, with a brand new album, a brand new tour, including a May 3 return to the Palladium , they’re ready to let that feeling wash away as they usher in the next chapter of their career. And they're as locked in as they’ve ever been.

While their “Wash It Away” tour makes its way coast-to-coast to support their new album, "Searching For Solace," the California-based metal quintet is excited to share new songs with their devoted fanbase.

However, even with the excitement leading up to another cross-country trek with fresh batch of heavy-hitting bangers, the band has had a number of benchmark memories at the Palladium over the years, including the band's emotional post-pandemic return celebration in 2021. Drummer Andrew Tkaczyk and guitarist Jim Riley see the band's return to Worcester as a true highlight along the road map.

'It's exciting to be back'

“It’s exciting to be coming back again, especially where the album will have just come out, and then we play a show where we get to play songs off that record. That’s something we haven’t done in 10 years, which is a crazy thing to think of," Riley said. “The vibes around here are through the roof, because we’re so proud of this record, and we’re just so excited to play some of the songs on this tour.”

The new music has the band in a different headspace altogether, so naturally, the setlist they’ve curated for the 20-city run is largely their most anticipated aspect of the tour as a collective.

With a generous dose of long-standing fan favorites, a number of new tracks, and even a handful of surprising deep cuts, Riley is pumped to unleash a little bit of everything for their audience. The song that lends its name to the name of the tour in “Wash It Away” is on the band’s radar as what they’re looking forward to playing the most. The song shows a palpable creative growth in the band’s approach to songwriting and composition.

“People who have been following the band for a long time know that the band has always been primarily Jonathan screaming, and a bit more basic on the guitar riff side of things, but (“Wash It Away”) is a more technical song across the board,” says Riley.

True to their roots

“Jonathan (Vigil) has been taking tons of time on the side to workshop and get his voice to a place where he’s doing the majority of the singing in the song, and he really sounds great. It’s also a song that really expands what The Ghost Inside is, and what we’re able to do," Riley said.

"We certainly haven’t lost our ‘heavy band’ roots," said Riley, "seeing as two of the songs we put out before the record are two of the heaviest songs we’ve ever played. But ‘Wash It Away’ is just a special one because it is different, it has a different vibe, and there aren’t many TGI songs that you can sing along to like ‘Wash It Away.’”

Sure, that song has them particularly psyched. But, that's not to say they’re not focused on what the rest of the album and the writing process for it represents for them as a unit, including what frontman Jonathan Vigil has done to prepare and expand his vocal range.

“Even before we started writing this record, we all had thoughts about how we were ready to write a record with no limits and just go in without any expectations, and see what comes out naturally. We didn’t want to cater to anyone or anything. We only wanted to write music that we enjoyed writing and playing,” said Riley.

Riley observed, “We had a lot of help doing that with a lot of new people that we co-wrote with, and different producers that brought out some elements in ourselves that we didn’t fully realize we had. It was really interesting to see how the record turned out with all those factors considered, and it’s by far my favorite record we’ve ever done. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted this band to become over the years, and I couldn’t be prouder of it.”

'Young and hungry' openers

Coming along for the full ride are Switzerland’s Paleface, Scottish heavy metal quintet Bleed From Within and Massachusetts’ own Great American Ghost.

Members of the Ghost Inside praise the three bands' musical abilities. They also see a lot of themselves in the drive and determination these bands have displayed over the course of their respective careers. It's similar in many wways to how The Ghost Inside operated earlier in their own career opening for bands such as Parkway Drive and As I Lay Dying.

“We have three young and hungry bands coming out with us, and we remember what it was like being that young and hungry band ourselves, and we remember how much we wanted to go out, do a good job and impress the people you’re out there playing for," said Tkaczyk. "So that sets a high bar for us to have to go out there and close the show."

Tkaczyk said, “Paleface are freaking awesome. Bleed From Within are phenomenal musicians, and Great American Ghost are hungry to get out there on what I think is one of the biggest tours they’ve ever done. I feel like it’s going to be an escalator all night with each band trying to out-do the band before them. And when you’re the last band, you really have to bring it, so it’s refreshing, and things like that keep us young and hungry, as well, trying to keep up with these young bucks.”

'A hot spot for this band'

Tkaczyk is quick to acknowledge just how lucky he and his battle-tested bandmates feel to able to still make music and tour, especially considering all they’ve endured over the course of the last decade.

Addition to that, returning to Worcester to play a stage such as the Palladium more than a few times is beyond anything the band could’ve imagined. As with every other time before, they’re thankful for the opportunity.

“Worcester has always been a hot spot for this band. We have so many friends and a lot of family there, as well, so we always know Worcester is going to be a giant celebration in a way. We love playing that stage,” says Tkaczyk. “We grew up watching the Killswitch (Engage) DVD and the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest shows, and it’s always fun being able to come back to that stage and live out our own little fantasy again. It’s always been a good time playing the Palladium, and this time is no different.”

REVIEW: A Broadway ghost story, just in time for Christmas; @StageEntertain 's GHOST the Musical has never looked or sounded better https://t.co/jbhA0d2Xdd — The Prickle (@ThePrickle) December 6, 2017

Despite an initial short-lived West End run that left critics cold, Ghost the Musical has gone on to tour extensively both within the U.K. and internationally, bringing audiences who come for the iconic 1990 film, and stay for the emotionally-charged, pop-rock score and eye-popping illusions. This Russian-language tour looks and sounds better than it ever did in the U.K., lifted by two superlative casts (in rotation).

Spoiler Alert : Sam (Pavel Lyovkin) is murdered a few minutes into Act one and becomes – you guessed it – a ghost. He’s trapped to roam the earth because of unfinished business: who murdered him, and why? Enlisting the help of fake psychic Oda Mae (Marina Ivanova), Sam persuades his devastated ex Molly (Yuliya Iva) to help solve the mystery. Corny, yes, but I challenge anyone to watch the spectacular final scene without shivers of emotion.

Yuliya Iva’s powerhouse vocal and extremely tender characterisation makes her the undeniable star of the show. It’s unfortunate that, due to Russian-language casting, Oda Mae is white in this all-white production (Whoopi Goldberg played the role in the original film), but Marina Ivanova is a hoot and a clear hit with the audience. While some songs lose a thing or two in translation (for example, Molly’s Act two anthem “Nothing Stops Another Day” becomes “Tomorrow Will Be Another Day”), Ivan Rak’s sleazy banker Karl takes on a new level of machismo bite, with a powerful Russian vocal.

The standard of the staging, performances, tech (and orchestra: listen out for the moments of overblown, virtuosic guitar) is all better than the U.K. versions, so it’s hard to understand the audience’s painfully lukewarm reaction here. Maybe it’s the all-American soundtrack and setting; maybe it deviates too much from the film. But those looking for a taste of Broadway in Moscow, and a Christmas ghost story, the MDM Theatre offers just the haunt you’ve been looking for.

Ghost the Musical is booking till March 2018.
