Golden Triangle
Ragu was one the best guides i ever had in all my tours. He gave great information and was very helpful in sorting out any extra needs you had. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone with limited time. Just plan at least one day in Delhi if you really want to see everything in Delhi as you have limited time there.

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)
For future tourists, please note Every tour is private, no other person share with you. The tickets total is less than 6000 rupees if not taking elephant ride (1300 rupees), majority of local guides are good and professional. Please do NOT buy anything, you will pay big premium on it. If you want to buy something wait to buy at airport, better quality and better price, learned hard lessons. Also do not touch anything, if you touch it you are forced to buy it. For my tour, the driver is nice and friendly, the local guide at Taj Mahal is very good and an excellent photographer.
Golden Triangle Tour - 3 Days
The tour was very nice. I had 3 different guides for the 3 different cities and they were all very helpful and experienced.
India's Top Selling Golden Triangle India Tour w/ Meals and Sunrise Taj Mahal
We had best 5 days in India. Accommodations were excellent. One of the best part of the tour is our driver. He drove very safely in the crazy traffic of India.
Luxury 3 Day Golden Triangle With 5 star Hotel
We just completed a GREAT three-day Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. First, I have to say our driver, Khan, must have gotten his amazing driving skills in another world! He navigated the most difficult roads and situations with ease, making sure we were comfortable and safe the whole time. When visiting a new place, this is so important! He also pointed out a lot of sites and gave us additional points on Indian cultural, all is great English. The daily tour guides did an excellent job too. Each one had an incredible amount of historical, cultural, and societal knowledge and was happy to share with us. It’s was a fast trip, but we saw and learned a lot. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in seeing a slice on Indian life and learning about Indian culture.
Taj Mahal, Tiger and Pink City
The hotels chosen were what we wanted and expected. Driver and guides are punctual, knowledgeable and courteous. Overall everything was well organized and enjoyable.

Premium India
Sensational in every aspect. Firstly our tour leader Chandra was exceptional in his knowledge, approachability and care for all 12 of us. The tour was enlightening culturally, stimulating from the history perspective and enjoyable as the group melded really well. Thanks to all involved in putting g Premiun India together.
India's Luxury Golden Triangle with Leopard Safari & Sunrise Taj Mahal
Excellent tour from start to finish. The booking and communication process, prior to the tour, were seamless and the arrangements during the trip ran smoothly. Wonderful tour guides, an amazing driver (Himmat), comfortable hotels, great food variety in restaurants - a really enjoyable trip. Memories to be treasured!
Premium India in Depth
Intrepid Premium India in Depth (November 13 - 25) Mumbai - Delhi Excellent tour leader along with very good local informative guides. 3 changes in accommodation; Mumbai - Gordon House Hotel is excellent, well priced and only 1 street back from Gateway to India but the company changed to Fariyas Hotel, Mumbai which was been renovated as well as painted so very noisy, couldn't use the pool and scaffolding all around. Definitely not ideal. Our second night in Delhi was also cancelled at Jaypee Siddharth Hotel though privately booked and paid for months before the tour so had to find alternative accommodation while on the tour and they told the travel agents they were "closed for renovations" however the tour was booked and stayed there and no renovations were occuring. Hadoti Palace Hotel in Bundi looked nice and rooms were big but not clean especially the toilet and shower. Otherwise all hotels were very nice and rated accurately; cleaning the showers/washrooms would have helped with the mouldy smell but that is somewhat consistent in most countries. November is the start of wedding season in India which are very loud and noisy and have no time restrictions so be prepared for that if going at this time of year. Tour involves quite a number of days travelling in a bus/coach for 4 - 6 hours with a stop every 2 - 3 hours. Rest stops are OK at best with only snack food to purchase. Adjusting the departure time would have helped with timeframes as quite a few days we were getting lunch around 2 - 3 pm when hotel kitchens were closed. Definitely not enough free time for shopping on your own with organized evenings most nights or in a venue on the outside of towns. Toured the markets but they were only a walk through with the group and no time to stop and shop. Restaurants and food was amazing and no one was unwell on the trip. 2 days in Ranthambhore Park was too long and could have done in 1.5 days with more time in Agra. Overall a very good trip for myself and my father (aged 79).
India Super Saver
Overall experience was excellent. Trip was very well organized and always on time. Turkey is an amazing country with much things to offer. Trip started in Istanbul, amazing city. Never enough time to see it all. Yigitalp hotel in Istanbul is very well located, nice staff and just a few tram stops from Sultanhemet area. Breakfast at the hotel is the one thing we didn´t like- It can be improved a lot or choose another hoe¡tel with better food quality. Second stop was Capadoccia, magical city. Tours were ok, and can be improved, I think there is much more to see in town and there is a lot of time waste taking us to rug, leather, jewelry shop, etc. which were not in our tour description when we booked it. Too much importance for this when there is a lot more of sightseeing. Abras Cabe house hotel was outstanding, an only 10 room boutique hotel. Staff makes you feel at home. Kusadasi was thr theird stop. The Marina Kudasi hotel is terrible, very dirty and low maintenance. Company needs to find a different place to stay. The town is great to go shopping on your own and go eat at a local restaurant. Beautiful sunsets. Epheso was a great visit even though I would have prefer spending more time at the site and not going again to a leather shop where they try to sell you things that you can fin a lot more cheaper in Kusadasi. Troy is a very interesting ancient site, then Bergama is another amazing place but again not enough time to explore around. Waste of time going to the carpet shop. Bergama town has much more to offer and to explore than offered in the tour.. Channakale Akol hotel was outstanding. Great food and service. This the quality needed among the whole trip. Galipoli is interesting if you like history. Probably wont go back again. Once is enough. Overall we had a wonderful vacation. Hope this review helps improve the tour. Thanks to all the tour guides. Standing ovation.
What people love about Golden Triangle Tours
This was a great introduction to India, even though it is a small part of the country. The itinerary was good and the hotels were very comfortable. Our driver, Dinesh, was professional, personable and helpful. He was a very welcoming person when we were collected at the airport. 2 out of 3 of the girds were very good. They were helpful and flexible. The third, in Delhi, was good but we had some reservations over a few things. The communication was good and meeting with Amit, the tour organiser at the beginning was helpful and reassuring. The tour was very reasonably priced. We would highly recommend taking a Yolo tour, especially this one.
Although I LOVED everything about this trip, I have to say that the experience was 10 times enhanced by our amazing CEO, Manvendra. He went above and beyond and truly made this the trip of a lifetime
Well organised and great guides - different guide in each city

Today you'll set off on an overnight flight from the UK to Delhi.
This morning, you'll arrive in the Indian capital of Delhi, where you'll meet your friendly tour manager and transfer to your hotel for check-in.
You'll have the rest of the day free to spend as you wish, possibly taking it easy and making use of the hotel's facilities or exploring the surrounding area before enjoying dinner at the hotel.
After an early breakfast at the hotel you'll set off on a morning sightseeing tour of Delhi. This enlightening tour encompasses all the city's major historical landmarks, including the Jama Masjid Mosque, one of the largest in India, Raj Ghat, Gandhi's cremation site, and Agrasen-Ki Baoli, a centuries-old step well.
You'll also enjoy an exhilarating rickshaw ride around Chandni Chowk, in the heart of Old Delhi, passing by the India Gate War Memorial, the Red Fort, with its soaring, scarlet walls, and the city's impressive Government buildings.
In the afternoon, you'll visit the striking Qutub Minar, the highest tower in India, consisting of five storeys with projecting balconies. This tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forms part of Delhi's oldest fortified city.
After an educational day in Delhi, you'll return to your hotel to unwind and have dinner.
Another early breakfast today before you check-out of your hotel and transfer to the New Delhi Railway Station, the largest station in India.
From here, you'll embark on a scenic journey to Amritsar, a city in the north-western Indian state of Punjab, where you'll check in at your hotel and take some time to freshen up before dinner at the hotel restaurant.
After dinner, you'll drive to the breathtaking Golden Temple. The most significant shrine in Sikhism, this temple sports a grand, jewel-encrusted dome and overlooks an expansive holy pool. Once here, you'll be able to see the spiritual Palki ceremony - which translates to the 'putting to bed' ceremony.
Performed every evening, this ceremony is carried out by devout followers who carry the holy book 'Guru Granth Sahib' from the main shrine to another room for the night. Accompanying the ceremony is singing, drumming, music, and the reading of hymns by a priest. After this special service, you'll be transferred back to the hotel for the night.
Today, you'll get to see the Golden Temple again and have more time to uncover its intriguing history and the pivotal role it still plays. Throughout the years, this sanctuary's main temple serves as a shelter for pilgrims from all over the world, and its wide-reaching dining hall sees the distribution of food to 35,000 people every day. You'll also have a chance to walk around the Central Sikh Museum, which provides further insight into Sikh history and culture.
The next stop is the Jallianwala Bagh, a historic memorial park of national importance located near the Golden Temple complex. This location commemorates one of the bloodiest days in Indian history and those wounded and killed during the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, in 1919.
This evening, you'll make the short journey out to the Indo-Pakistani border crossing at Wagah. Here, every day as the sun sets, a military practice referred to as the 'Beating Retreat' border ceremony takes place. It has been carried out by the security forces of India and Pakistan since 1959 and entails a colourful, coordinated parade of the lowering of the two nations' flags.
Once the ceremony is over, you'll return to the hotel for dinner.
After breakfast today you'll take a drive to the small, pretty village of Pragpur, backed by the Dhauladhar mountain range, where you'll check into your hotel and get settled.
Later in the afternoon, you can join a 'Heritage Walk' through this mediaeval hamlet, which was named the country's first 'Heritage Village' due to its unique architecture and unspoilt natural beauty. Wander down its narrow, cobblestone lanes, lined with fort-like houses and villas with their slated roofs and mud-covered walls.
Head back to the hotel in the evening to make the most of your time in this enchanting 300-year-old accommodation, set in a manor house fringed by an exquisite garden looking out over the Himalayas.
After breakfast this morning, you'll head off on an excursion to the city of Dharamshala. The home of the Dalai Lama, this mountainside city is ringed by cedar forests and positioned on the edge of the Himalayas.
While here, you'll seek out the impressive Dalai Lama Temple, the current residence of 'His Holiness', adorned with statues and filled with ancient books and artefacts.
On the outskirts of Dharamshala, you'll find the Kangra Fort, the largest fort in the Himalayas, thought to be the oldest in India, which boasts beautiful views of the dramatic surrounding landscapes.
At the entrance to the fort, there is a small museum that will unveil more of the structure's past before you refuel with an included lunch.
In the evening, you'll go back to the hotel for dinner, and perhaps enjoy a drink on the veranda while reflecting on your day.
This morning you'll transfer to Shimla, set in the foothills of the Himalayas, and check in at the magnificent Oberoi Cecil Hotel, a landmark colonial-era property dating from 1884.
Given Shimla's hillside location, this is the perfect place to stretch your legs, and maybe explore the area on a gentle hike through the pine and oak forests. A loop around the streets, scattered with relics of the past and colonial-style buildings, is also a must. Make sure to check out the assortment of handicraft shops along The Mall, a pedestrian avenue, and the Lakkar Bazaar too.
When you've had your fill of wandering, venture back to the hotel for dinner, further enhanced by an arresting vista of the Shimla Valley.
Today you'll enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Shimla, starting with the famous Tara Devi Temple - a holy Hindu temple constructed within the Himalayan peaks in the 18th century and inspired by a vision of the goodness of Tara.
The Viceregal Lodge is next. This former British summer retreat of teak-panelled interiors was where the map of Indian Partition was drawn up. You'll then stop over at the Indian Institute of Advanced of Studies, a research institute housed in a historical building of Indo-Gothic style.
Later in the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll to Scandal Point, on the western edge of Shimla, where two of the city's roads meet - The Ridge and Mall Road. This traditional meeting place for locals features a small square with a mock-Tudor state post office. You'll then pass the Gaiety Theatre, where you might have time to look inside before returning to the hotel for dinner.
After breakfast, you'll travel down the scenic valley from Shimla to Chandigarh, continuing to the airport for a flight to Jaipur.
After landing, you'll be picked up and taken to your hotel - a remarkable property with a red brick exterior inspired by the royal era. After some time to unpack and settle in, perhaps enjoy a sundowner at the bar, before sitting down for an Indian feast.
Kick-start the day of sightseeing around the 'Pink City', Jaipur, before visiting the former Rajput capital, the Amber Palace. You'll climb by jeep to the city's vast sixth-century hill-top fort to wander its Royal Halls and take in the magnificent views over Maota Lake from the ramparts.
After lunch, you'll head off to the City Palace, a red-hued intricate complex of temples, courtyards, pavilions and gardens, and a major heritage landmark and see the Jantar Mantar, an observatory constructed in 1724. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses the world's largest sundial and an assortment of 19 astronomical instruments.
On the way back to your hotel, you'll pass by another palace - Hawa Mahal. Also known as the 'Palace of the Winds', this 18th-century building is constructed from red and pink sandstone and lined with ornate windows and screened balconies.
Tonight, there's an optional walking tour which will lead you into the labyrinth of Jaipur's antique bazaars while sampling traditional delicacies and learning about the artistic traditions of the city.
After a relaxed breakfast this morning you'll set off on a drive to Ranthambore - one of the largest national parks in Northern India. This former royal hunting ground is now a key centre for 'Project Tiger', and its grasslands, streams and pools are home to striped hyenas, sambar deer, sloth bears and of course, the elusive and still endangered tigers of Ranthambore.
Later in the day, you'll arrive at your villa accommodation, tucked away in a jungle setting teeming with wildlife.
Take your time to get comfortable and explore the property before enjoying dinner at the resort.
Today you can choose to spend a relaxed morning at the hotel or join an optional excursion to Ranthambore Fort. Perched at the top of a hill and ringed by a towering stone wall, once you've climbed the 273-step path to the top you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the national park.
In the afternoon, after an early lunch, you'll be driven to Dholpur, a city on the banks of the Chambal River. Upon arrival, you'll check into your stately heritage hotel, built in the city's iconic red sandstone.
This evening you'll get the chance to watch a short cooking demonstration by the resident chef before dinner.
Today you'll head to the waters of the Chambal River, where a picturesque boat ride allows you to see the splendours of the jungle from a different angle.
You'll return to the hotel for lunch and enjoy a leisurely afternoon to pack up and get ready for your journey to Agra - India's 'City of Love' and the site of its most famous monument, the Taj Mahal.
Upon arrival in Agra, you'll be taken to Mehtab Bagh - a garden complex away from the bustle of the city, where you can enjoy incredible views of the Taj Mahal in all its glory. Find your position on the opposite side of the Yamuna River to snap the perfect photograph.
You'll then head back to your luxury hotel, surrounded by a beautiful garden of water channels, walkways, and fruit trees, where you'll check-in and have dinner.
Enjoy the morning at your own pace before an excursion to the royal pavilions, palaces, and courtyards of the majestic Agra Fort. This 16th-century fortress set on the Yamuna River, near the gardens of the Taj Mahal, is built from the city's red sandstone.
To conclude this day, you'll travel to the Taj Mahal at sunset and watch as this monument is dappled in swathes of changing colour as the light gradually dips behind the building. After a guided tour, you'll return to the hotel for dinner and perhaps a nightcap at one of the hotel's welcoming bars.
Spend one last unforgettable morning in India by joining an optional excursion to view the Taj Mahal at dawn, and see this iconic monument bathed in the colours of sunrise.
You'll then return for breakfast at your hotel and have some spare time to enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities, like the tennis courts, mini-golf course, fitness centre, and spa.
In the late afternoon, you'll leave the hotel and begin the drive to Delhi. A final and celebratory dinner will be served in Delhi, as you bid farewell to your newfound friends and travel to the airport for your overnight flight home.

Maybe take a dip in the swimming pool or sip a refreshing drink at the bar – the choice is yours. We’ll get together later for a welcome drink before enjoying dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 Delhi - Agra
We’ll start our sightseeing in earnest today, beginning on foot in the 17th-century walled city of Old Delhi. We’ll stroll around the street bazaar of Chandni Chowk and admire the impressive marble domes of Jama Masjid Mosque. You’ll then climb aboard a rickshaw and ride through the city’s maze of crowded streets and bustling markets to see the spectacular sandstone exterior of the Red Fort.
Next, we’ll step inside the poignant Gandhi Smriti Museum, located in the house where Gandhi spent the last 144 days of his life and the place of his assassination. A sightseeing tour will then introduce us to New Delhi, a spacious, imperial city created by the British in 1911. We'll drive through elegant boulevards to see the iconic India Gate and imposing Parliament House, both grand reminders of the city's colonial past. We'll also see Humayun's Tomb, which was built in 1570 and is said to have inspired the Taj Mahal, and visit the soaring sandstone tower, Qutub Minar.
Later we’ll drive to Agra and have dinner at the hotel this evening.
Get ready to experience one of the highlights of your holiday – a visit to the incredible Taj Mahal at sunrise. This magnificent mausoleum, built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz, is one of the world's most glorious sights. Watch in awe as the sun rises over its white marble walls and enjoy some leisure time to take in this magnificent monument's beauty.
After returning to the hotel for breakfast, we’ll head to the mighty Agra Fort, the palatial red-sandstone fortification where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son. Our sightseeing then takes us to the Itmad ud Daulah tomb, the first monument in India built entirely from marble. Known as the 'Baby Taj', we’ll admire its exquisitely carved marble lattice screens. Then it’s on to our final stop of the day, Mehtab Bagh. At this centuries-old garden complex, we’ll get a fabulous view of the Taj Mahal from the other side of the Yamuna River.
If you would like to enjoy an evening out, there's the option to watch a performance of Mohabbat the Taj, about Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife. With a spectacular set, colourful costumes, upbeat songs and dancing, it is the perfect end to your day.
Day 5 Agra - Ranthambore
Our first stop today is at the deserted, fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri. A fine example of Mughal architecture, its highlights include a huge mosque and an array of palaces and pavilions.
Later, you can sit back and enjoy the ever-changing scenery as we make our way to Ranthambore.
Day 6 Ranthambore
A thrilling day lies ahead, with not just one but two safaris in Ranthambore National Park, said to be the best game reserve in India. On morning and afternoon game drives we'll make our way through thick forest, where pretty waterfalls provide the perfect habitat for more than 300 species of birds. Our knowledgeable Local Guide will help you to spot other residents of the park, including crocodiles, hyenas, jackals and more. Keep your fingers crossed for a sighting of the elusive tiger, or the even rarer leopard.
Day 7 Ranthambore - Dausa
This morning we’ll drive to our next hotel. We’ll have lunch when we arrive and then the afternoon is yours to spend at leisure. Perhaps you’ll head out and explore the surrounding area, take a stroll or simply relax by the pool.
Later, we’re going to enjoy a barbecue dinner, complete with a bonfire, musicians and traditional folk dancers.
Day 8 Dausa - Jaipur
As we take to the road this morning, we have the famous 'Pink City' of Jaipur in our sights. It’s the capital of Rajasthan and as we approach, we’ll see its fabulous pink and ochre-coloured buildings set amongst barren hills.
We'll get our bearings on a guided tour, which includes a visit to the City Palace, an impressive array of courtyards, gardens and regal buildings. The palace is also home to a museum that boasts a fine collection of Mughal treasures including paintings, carpets and silverware. Next, we’ll drive past the elaborate facade of the Palace of the Winds. This pyramid-shaped building is adorned with ornate lattice-covered windows where the ladies of the court could stand unseen, watching over the city.
You’ll then have time to browse the colourful ceramics and textiles in the Old Town's bustling markets before enjoying a glass of lassi. This traditional drink is made by blending water, yoghurt, spices and sometimes fruit.
Day 9 Jaipur - Delhi
Your day begins with a short drive to the marvellous Amber Fort, a sprawling 17th-century stronghold which sits on a hilltop overlooking the desert. We'll step inside to see its highlights, which include the eerie Temple of Kali and the enchanting Hall of Pleasures. You’ll also see the jewel-like Palace of Mirrors, a beautiful hall where the walls, ceilings and columns are completely covered in tiny pieces of sparkling glass.
Later, we’ll drive back to Delhi and dinner will be served at our hotel this evening.
Day 10 Delhi - UK
After breakfast, we'll drive you to the airport for your return flight to the UK. As you are travelling westwards, you will arrive later the same day.

Delhi Sightseeing Tour
After a delicious breakfast, where you may savour some of your first tastes of authentic Indian cuisine, the day discovering Delhi commences. A pick-up will collect you from your hotel at 9 am - first stop, Old Delhi.
Old Delhi is the 300-year-old ancient walled city, built by the renowned Mughal emperor, Shah Jehan in 1648 as his illustrious Mughal Empire capital. The area’s royal mantle has left a splattering of incredible monuments and architectural masterpieces. Drive past the historic Red Fort, where the Prime Minister addresses the nation on Independence Day. The splendour continues with a trip to Jama Masjid, one of India’s most exquisite mosques, standing tall and beautiful on a hillock overlooking the city. As you move from one masterpiece to the next, you’ll experience Delhi's contrasts: embracing these monuments on all sides, a thriving, modern city, set in a startling medieval setting. The return journey takes you to Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s shrine.
Heritage and culture continue in New Delhi, once the British colonial capital. Here, you’ll drive past the stunning President’s House - Rashtrapati Bhavan - and the flanking Secretarial buildings; the nerve centre of India’s government. Further along the hillock lies the iconic India Gate, the memorial built to commemorate the heroes of WW1 and the Indo-Afghan War. Taj Mahal’s sublime predecessor, Humayun’s Tomb is spectacular, with infinite arches and immaculate lawns. Built in 1565 by the widow of the second Mughal Emperor, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Hamayun is an early Mughal garden tomb, thought to have inspired the Taj.
The historical highlights don’t end there - a Delhi tour would not be complete without a visit to twelfth-century Qutub Minar, arguably the city’s most well-known monument. Standing tall and narrow at 73 metres, this was Delhi’s first Quwat-ul-Islam (Light of Islam) mosque. The day ends with some Hindu heritage, at the beautiful Lakshmi Narayan temple, built by one of India’s most esteemed families, the Birlas.
After an action-packed day of exploration, you’ll return to the hotel, ready for a good night’s rest before the journey to Agra.
Delhi - Agra
Today is a travel day, providing time to reflect on your Delhi experiences and have a look over those epic photographs! A final breakfast and you’ll bid farewell to Delhi, as the Golden Triangle tour moves on to the turrets and terraces of Agra. You’ll be picked up from your hotel at 9 am, and a 4-5 hour scenic drive transports you to the next city on your inspiring India tour.
Arriving in Agra in the afternoon, there’s ample time to wander the city at leisure, perhaps stopping for chai at one of the tea stalls or discovering one of Agra’s boutique cafes. As dusk falls, return to your hotel to relax ahead of another eventful day. You’ll be staying at either the ITC Mughal or Taj Hotel & Convention Centre - each providing the best in cuisine, comfort and amenities.
- Suggested Accommodation ITC Mughal or Taj Hotel & Convention Centre
Agra Sightseeing Tour
Rising early in the morning, you’ll meet Agra’s most iconic and memorable feature: the resplendent Taj Mahal. The first rays of sun cast a pink and gold glow on the shimmering walls of the Taj - a magical spectacle. This time of day provides unmatched romance of setting, and the opportunity to explore the mausoleum with fewer tourists. Built by the emperor Shan Jahan in 1560, to enshrine his queen Mumtaz Mahal’s remains, the Taj Mahal is a sight that can only be truly appreciated in person. Perfectly proportioned, an edifice of white marble that took 20,000 craftsmen and 17 years to build, your Taj Mahal tour provides fascinating insights into this astonishing building and the stories behind it.
Returning to the hotel thoroughly awestruck, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous breakfast. Later that day, you’ll visit Agra Fort - a huge, imposing sandstone fort, telling tales of the grandeur of the Mughal Empire. Highlights of the fort include the exquisite Dewan-e-Am, where the Emperor conducted his subjects, and the opulent Dewan-e-Khas, where he received foreign dignitaries. As dusk settles over the city, you’ll return to the Taj (once just isn’t enough!) - this time savouring the views from the immaculate lawns of Mehtab Bagh park, directly opposite. Expect an astonishing sunset.
Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Jaipur
The next location on your whistle-stop India tour is Rajasthan's legendary Jaipur, landscaped in palaces and innumerable pink buildings. After breakfast, you’ll set off to the Pink City - a five-six hour drive - pausing on the way at Fatehpur Sikri. This mysterious and deserted city was built in 1569 by Emperor Akbar, in honour of the great Saint Sheikh Salim Christi, who blessed Akbar and prophesied three sons to the heirless Emperor. Once Akbar’s capital, the city was abandoned due to shortages of water, soon falling to neglect. Roam the ‘Ghost City's’ spectacular and remarkably well-preserved buildings, including Jama Masjid, the Salim Chisti tomb and Panch Mahal Palace. Each building, and the embracing arches and ponds, illustrate the splendour of the ancient Mughal Empire.
The drive continues through the expanses of Rajasthan’s rust-hued desert, the pink promise of Jaipur winking on the horizon. Spend the evening relaxing at the elegant ITC Rajputana Hotel.

Jaipur Sightseeing Tour
Your day in Jaipur begins in style at the iconic Amber Fort. This utterly magnificent fort comprises a sprawling palace complex, with other-worldly interiors: marble arches and pink sandstone terraces; walls embellished with precious stones and mirrors; and an abundance of the region’s traditional miniature paintings. Inside the Amber Fort resides the Jag Mandir, or Hall of Victory, with the famous Sheesh Mahal room unmatched romance of setting - all four walls and ceiling coated in glittering mirror fragments, specially imported from Belgium. En route to the fort, the tour will make a brief stop at Hawa Mahal, a palace composed of countless stacked terraces, all the quintessential Jaipur pink.
The afternoon continues in royal form at the Maharaja's City Palace - the former royal residence. A spread of courtyards, buildings and gardens covering one-seventh of the entire city’s landscape, this incredible palace is situated at the centre of the Old City. The on-site museum houses a huge collection of ancient armoury and weaponry. Further intrigue is found later in the day at Jantar Mantar, an impressive observatory with an array of strange-looking sculptures and astronomy instruments.
After numerous days watching shifting scenery as you journey through India and taking in the country’s most majestic monuments and colourful cities, this part of your India tour offers a respite from travelling and the opportunity to enjoy some authentic experiences in Jaipur.
There are a number of different experiences you can join, each unique and rewarding - all optional. The cooking demonstration - and dining - with a local family takes your tastebuds on a rich and exotic tour of India’s most exquisite cuisine. Gain insights into the myriad flavours and colours, and gain tips from the experts, with opportunities to join in preparations - kneading the dough for chapatis or preparing traditional gravies. After the hard work, settle down for a feast!
In the morning or afternoon, you can take part in an art workshop with local artisans. These exceptional workshops are entirely bespoke, led by Jaipur’s finest artisans and craftsmen. Art is a significant and renowned part of the Rajasthani culture, and this is a unique way to connect with the local community, learning skills and techniques that have been passed down for centuries. The workshops include a huge range of hands-on creative activities, including Blue Pottery, Kite-making, Puppet-making, Tie Dye, Miniature Painting and Meenakari (jewellery) work.
An option for your evening in Jaipur is a traditional Aarti ceremony at the sparkling, white-marble Birla Temple. Elaborately costumed idols of Lord Ram and Sita are presented, and there is much chanting and singing.
Jaipur - Delhi
A last breakfast in Jaipur, and it’s time to wave goodbye to the beautiful Pink City. A five-six hour journey takes you back to Delhi, where your epic adventure first began. Once you’ve checked in at the hotel - again, a superior room at the Taj Palace Hotel - you have the rest of the day to spend as you like. Enjoy a last spicy Indian meal, do some last-minute shopping, or simply relax at the hotel, reminiscing over the events of your Golden Triangle Tour.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Why is this tourist circuit called the Golden Triangle?
Made up of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, the Golden Triangle is named for the triangular shape made by the locations of the three cities.
Is it safe to visit the Golden Triangle?
In general, India is a pretty safe country to travel to as long as you keep these things in mind:
- Stick to well-lit and populated areas at night
- Travel in groups to unfamiliar places
- Always keep an eye on your personal belongings.
The regions/cities visited as part of the Golden Triangle circuit aren't experiencing any political or civil unrest. You shouldn't get into trouble if you heed the above recommendations.
What kind of transportation is used to travel around the Golden Circle?
As Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur are relatively close.
The primary mode of transportation between the destinations is a private vehicle so you can travel in comfort and get to know your fellow group members along the way.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Journey To The Golden Triangle - India

How To Organise The Perfect First Trip To India
As an independent traveller, I usually book a flight, get a visa if necessary (you will need one for India, and should apply online 30 days before your departure), arrange accommodation online and find out the best way to travel between cities if my itinerary demands it. Planning my first trip to India felt different.
The country is vast and I had many preconceived concerns that made me somewhat anxious about how to organise it all. Chief amongst these was how to get around. Everyone I spoke to about India said ‘get a driver’. While this sounded like a great idea, I had no notion of how to arrange a safe driver or whether such a person would meet me in the middle of the night when my flight arrived in Delhi.
Even after I had booked my flight, I had still not resolved this conundrum. Then I had a fortuitous meeting with the owner of an Indian travel agency and everything fell into place. Popular India Vacations organised everything I needed and let me keep control of the aspects of the trip I wanted to arrange myself. Thus, my independence was preserved while all the aspects of travel in India that concerned me (primarily personal safety, especially on the roads) were taken care of—a perfect balance.
Since I only had two weeks of holiday time available, I knew I had to restrict my travels to one area. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to confine myself to a very popular route for first-timers to India – a few days in Delhi, then a visit to Agra to see the Taj Mahal before travelling to Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan. This trip is often referred to as The Golden Triangle. It can be done in a week. As I had two weeks, the most affable and helpful Mr Singh of Popular India Travels suggested that I add in a few extra stops in Rajasthan. These included Jodhpur and Udaipur which I very much wanted to see. I was also offered some alternative options including a few days in Jaisalmer – on the edge of the desert with camel treks and desert camping – or some of India’s famous animal sanctuaries where tigers and birds are to be enjoyed. Rajasthan – the land of the kings – is a vast state so three to four weeks would be ideal, but even two weeks gave me a good taste of India and left me with an appetite for more.
In India, the museums and monuments all have two queues – one for locals and one for foreigners. Sometimes there is a third queue for women and certainly, when one goes through security (at almost every monument) there is a separate queue for women. The price differs for locals and foreigners who pay much more for entrance fees (as we should in my view, the entrance fee still being nowhere near what we expect to pay in the UK). Our driver, Anand, was so helpful with this. He would accompany us to every ticket office, help us to buy the tickets and then help to negotiate the queuing system for security. At this point, he would leave us to get on with our visit – or hand us over to a guide if we had requested he arrange one for us. In India, drivers are not permitted by law to act as guides. Guides are specially trained and have to pass a government-controlled exam. Anand waited for us for hours on end until we had finished our visits, with no pressure or time constraints. It made every visit so easy and relaxing.
My Golden Triangle Itinerary
If you are flying in from the UK you may very well arrive in the middle of the night. I had my concerns about touching down after 1 am but Delhi airport was buzzing. Popular India Vacations will arrange for the driver to fetch you from the airport and you can rest assured that he will be waiting for you.
Over three days in Delhi, I concentrated on museums and sights in New Delhi, Old Delhi and South Delhi.
Places of Interest In New Delhi:
India Gate looks rather like the Marble Arch or the Arc de Triomphe and commemorates the 90,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting alongside the British army in World War 1. This is a gentle introduction to Delhi as one can be driven close by and take a gentle walk while also seeing the Parliament buildings.
Humayun’s Tomb – The precursor to the Taj Mahal, was the first of many magnificent tombs we visited in India. Arched facades, marble and red sandstone with Islamic geometry will set you up for the aesthetic of many of India’s outstanding tombs, architectural and artistic splendours.
National Gallery of Modern Art – housed in the 1936 former Maharajah of Jaipur’s palace, The National Gallery of Modern Art comprises a fascinating collection. Two buildings, one, somewhat like the British Museum in London, housing an array of fascinating artefacts while the other traces the development of Indian art from the mid-19th century. As someone who loves nothing better than an art museum, I felt rather sad at the poor state of the displays and the almost complete lack of context by way of any explanation of what was on show.
National Crafts Museum – one could spend half a day here but we had only a few hours. Take the audio guide which will provide you with lots of information about the highlights of this fascinating and well-designed tour of regional Indian crafts . These include extraordinary textiles, ceramics, sculpture and artefacts which reveal much about regional variations that contribute to India’s very rich cultural tapestry. One of the best museums we visited on our trip. In the grounds, there are craftspeople from across India, creating and selling crafts as well as an outdoor food market. Don’t miss the wonderful restaurant, Café Lota which is near the entrance to the museum so can be visited independently.
Lodi Road Street Art – don’t miss the street art in the Lodi Road area. Nearby, the large Lodi Park is perfect if you have time for a stroll.
Connaught Place was built to resemble the Royal Crescent in Bath with its Georgian architecture. It is nowadays a commercial area filled with international brands and loads of restaurants. We did a bit of spontaneous shopping at a cubbyhole-sized shoe shop where I bought a pair of silver ballet slippers, Indian style, for £12 which my husband said I would never wear and I have since proved him wrong.
What to see in Old Delhi:
Jama Masjid – India’s largest mosque is not to be missed on a visit to Old Delhi. It has a capacious courtyard that can accommodate 25,000 people for prayers. Red sandstone and marble with wonderful Islamic architecture and views over the city all make for a most atmospheric visit. There are four watchtowers and two minarets where from 40m high one can get a bird’s eye view. Of course, first, you have to climb up.
Chandi Chowk rickshaw tour – just outside the Jama Masjid you will find rickshaws lined up waiting to escort you around the Chandi Chowk market. This is a very chaotic area, a maze of alleyways and bazaars, motorbikes, loads of people, and a great deal of noise – I would advise a guide.
Our driver made all the arrangements and off we went, with our guide escorting us around the tiny streets on the back of a rickshaw. We stopped off to look at the wedding market – every Indian bazaar we visited over two weeks had tiny alleys packed with an endless array of wedding dress shops.
Then we visited a narrow alley – Naughara Galli – renowned for its painted, 18th-century havelis (old merchants’ houses) one of which is now a Jain temple with a most stunning interior – the walls are covered with glass mosaics depicting Jain deities and mythology. A detailed tour would require several hours. We merely had time to glance and marvel as we walked through this most unusual space. Other havelis are occupied by jewellery makers going back generations. One is a luxury hotel. I would recommend a tour of this market area as it would be very easy to get lost in the sinuous streets.
The Red Fort – I was in two minds about visiting this fort in Old Delhi as I had read varying reports. I was rather disappointed by the fort which, although vast, is by far the least interesting and least maintained – some of it is rather derelict – of all the forts I visited later in Rajasthan. If you are touring Rajasthan after visiting Delhi then you can safely give this fort a miss.
Raj Ghat – this was our final – and most moving – stop in our day spent touring Old Delhi. It is a very well-manicured park on the banks of the Yamuna River that contains at its centre, a large black marble platform and memorial to Mahatma Gandhi who was cremated there following his assassination. It is a very peaceful place and all around the site are trees planted by foreign dignitaries over the decades.
Unmissable things in South Delhi:
Bahai House of Worship (known as the Lotus Temple) – This beautiful temple – as the name suggests it resembles the lotus flower – is reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House. It is set in a large area of garden and seems to hover above a series of shallow pools. You queue, remove shoes and are ushered inside in small groups.
Inside is an impressively large and peaceful prayer hall with ice-cold marble benches. If you don’t have time to queue, at least see it from the outside from which viewpoint it is at its most impressive. Our driver told us that the queues at weekends are very long whereas on a Thursday when we visited, there was a very short one.
Qutub Minar – I was blown away by the Qutub Minar – we only ended up there because our driver could not believe we had not yet seen it and insisted we did. He was so right on this one. He also offered as options, some alternatives. Over the centuries there have been many incarnations of Delhi and this site is part of one of the first. The main attraction is a 73m tower built by Qutubuddin Aibak to celebrate the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu Kingdom. It has five distinct storeys in red sandstone and marble with beautiful Islamic carvings. Alongside – and also really well preserved – is India’s first mosque – the Quwwat-el-Islam mosque which dates back to the 12 th century. It is an exquisite example of the pre-Mughal dynasties in Delhi.
Where we ate in Delhi:
We had two quite fabulous meals in 5-star hotels which were the only occasions on which I veered off a vegetarian path while in India. The first was an outstanding meal at Jamavar, a fine-dining Indian restaurant in The Leela Palace Hotel . The second was a dinner at Bukhara at the ITC Hotel. Book as far ahead as you can, months if possible. We could not get a reservation but there is a queueing system from 7.30 pm. As it was our final day in Delhi and our flight was only at 3 am, we were happy to queue and finished our dinner by 10.30. You can sit in the stunning lobby while you wait or in the bar of this beautiful hotel. Go to both dinners very hungry.
Far less glamorous but serving delicious food – for a fraction of the price of the two dinners above – was the restaurant at the Crafts Museum. Café Lota showcases the regional cuisines of India – as the museum displays regional crafts – the food was both very creative and utterly delicious. I wished I had time to return. The restaurant can be visited independently of the museum and is also open for dinner (when the museum is closed).
A coffee stop at United Coffee House in Connaught Place was a surprising delight. Once inside its doors, one enters a vibey space that harks back to colonial times with large chandeliers and even larger portions. We shared a ginormous samosa with a pot of masala chai – and if you are a coffee drinker you will be spoilt for choice.
Getting from Delhi to Agra
The drive from Delhi to Agra is around 4 hours on a well-maintained, three-lane highway. Getting out of Delhi is an experience is chaotic traffic but that is why having a driver is such a good idea. Agra is most famous for the Taj Mahal but what impressed me about this sprawling city is that there is so much more to see. You may, like me, be someone who does a lot of research before a trip or you may want to ask your driver where the best sights are. Anand made some great suggestions for places he knew we would enjoy.
Sights not to miss in Agra:
Agra Fort – the fort complex is set in a garden blooming with flowers. Unfortunately the British destroyed countless buildings to build barracks but there remains much to see. Beautiful marble buildings are part of the appeal – it was occupied by Shah Jahan who was allegedly exiled here by his son, although some historians contest this. Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal for his late wife and he had a lovely view of it from the fort. We were excited to get our first glimpse of this iconic building as it glimmered in the distance.
Mehtab Bagh – this is a park behind the Taj Mahal, just over the Yamuna River which it overlooks. From here one has a stunning view – especially in the late afternoon light – of the back of the Taj Mahal which looks the same from all four sides. This was one of those pinch-me moments, I felt quite emotional to be standing so close to this iconic building. If you think visiting the Taj Mahal is too touristy, please think again. It is thrilling.
Taj Mahal – having seen the Taj Mahal from the back the afternoon before, my appetite was whetted which helped get me out of bed at 6 am the next day. Hotels generally allow visitors a late breakfast as many guests go to the Taj Mahal before dawn and return up to three hours later. The entrance ticket allows three hours which is more than sufficient. Going at dawn means the tour busses have not yet arrived and we found few people there. We entered at the West Gate where there was no queue at all. Don’t take any bags. But do take your camera. If you hire a tour guide then they will take many photos for you – all the iconic shots, on the bench where Princess Di sat looking unhappy and all the other well-known viewpoints. It is a jaw-dropping place when seen up close – the pieta dura (marble inlay work) is exceptional, the marble filigree work is exquisite and renders the structure both substantial and yet light and floaty. This ethereal effect was enhanced by the mist that surrounded the Taj Mahal as dawn broke. The whole experience is quite mesmerising. In the evening I sat on the rooftop of my hotel and watched as the Taj Mahal glowed in the setting sunlight, slightly pink where the light hit the dome.
Sikandara or Akbar’s Tomb – India is full of mausoleums which may sound gloomy but is anything but. After all, the Taj Mahal is itself a mausoleum. Sikandara is the mausoleum of the Mughal emperor, Akbar. Completed in 1613, it combines Hindu and Muslim architecture and is ornately decorated and beautifully preserved. The stunning gateway in red sandstone and marble opens into a lovely set of sunken gardens and pathways.
Itimad-ud-Daula’s Tomb – or The Baby Taj as it is known – this precursor to the Taj Mahal is the tomb of a Persian nobleman, Mirza Ghias Beg, the grandfather of Mumtaz Mahal who is buried in the Taj Mahal. Although smaller than the Taj Mahal it is well worth visiting. Completed in 1628, the white marble and pietra dura is exquisite and inlaid with semi-precious stones. Inside the tomb, there are delightful decorations with floral marble carvings and painted niches with delicate, whimsical scenes of fruit and flowers. It was the first tomb built on the banks of the Yamuna river and we sat on a bench watching the monkeys in the garden. The garden is typically Islamic being divided into four quarters by waterways and a large basin in the centre.
Where we ate:
Pinch of Spice is a well known restaurant where there were many tourists but also local people. It is not often that I have eaten in a place where I was discouraged from ordering more than I needed. The portions were large and very tasty. A half portion of butter chicken and a main of paneer lababdar (paneer in a rich, tomato sauce) with some rice and naan was plenty for two hungry diners. Service was brisk so we were out within an hour.
Getting to Japiur via Fatehpur Sikri
One of the joys of having a driver is that you can stop between major cities to visit areas of interest. You could of course visit Fatehpur Sikri on a tour bus but a private visit was special. Although it is a mere 37km from Agra, the traffic leaving the city is mayhem, literally a free-for-all at the intersections with cars, bikes, rickshaws and tuk-tuks coming and going in every direction. Do not attempt this by hiring a car and driving yourself. Get a driver. Everyone seems to know what they are doing even when to the outside observer it seems like utter chaos. Cows are everywhere alongside and sometimes on the road. At one point a herd of buffalo trotted alongside us in the road.
Fatehpur Sikri is essentially an abandoned city, built in 1571 by Emperor Akbar, the third Mughal ruler of India, who was particularly interested in architecture. It is an outstanding example of Medieval town planning and was abandoned a mere 14 years after completion. Myth has it that it was discovered that there was insufficient water to support the city but this is now considered unlikely. With such astute planning and attention to every detail, the water supply would not likely have been overlooked. More likely is that there were political reasons behind the capital of the kingdom being moved to Lahore after Fatehpur Sikri had served its brief purpose of supporting Akbar’s expansion into Rajasthan.
It is a huge site and you could easily spend most of the day here – we had only a few hours as we had a long way still to travel that day. A very good guide book was most helpful, although you could equally hire a guide to usher you around. Much of the complex is built in sandstone, a large range of buildings erected around large plazas, fabulous domes like inverted lotus flowers, lovely Hindu architecture. Royal palaces, meeting halls, and pavilions are all very evocative of the royal life that once took place here. The complex also contains the Jama Masjid, an enormous mosque encompassing both Persian and Indian design. A marble tomb is another highlight as is the Buland Darwaza – a monumental gate that is visible for miles around and proclaims Akbar’s power. Those with even the slightest interest in history and architecture will thoroughly enjoy a visit.
As if this was not excitement enough for one day, Anand then drove us a couple of hours further, off the main highway, to another highlight of our trip. Abhaneri is a tiny town with a very famous stepwell, the Hindi word is ‘baori’. This is an 800-year-old feat of engineering, the 19.6m deep well was first dug and then the stepped walls were built. Not only is it very beautiful – the symmetry is stunning – it reminded me of an Escher drawing. The steps enabled people and animals to get down to the water.
Visiting Jaipur
Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan and the last stop on The Golden Triangle route. Known as The Pink City, Jaipur is both graceful and elegant as well as sprawling. There is so much to see that a week would be best, but we only had a couple of days. Hence we cherry-picked the highlights. So as to maximise our experience of the city, Popular India Vacations organised a guide for us during our stay in Jaipur.
The Pink City is so named because the buildings in the old city are all required to be painted the same shade of pink. The buildings are set along wide streets, set out in a grid fashion – you take your life into your hands when you cross on foot – and it gives a uniform and ordered look to the town unlike some of the other old city centres we had visited.
What we saw:
The City Palace – One of the major sights in the old city is the City Palace, the royal residence that was built in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. Even today members of the Jaipur royal family live in the complex. Their quarters are not open to the public but the rest of the large complex has been transformed into a fascinating museum. Our guide ushered us around the heritage buildings filled with outstanding arts and crafts of Jaipur. One of my favourite pieces was a pair of gigantic silver gangajalis (water urns) – each large enough to fit a man inside. These were used to transport water from India when the Maharaja visited England and wanted his own holy water supply. In India these very heavy vessels were transported by elephant and I did wonder how they were transported once they reached England. There are pavilions, meeting halls, open squares, monumental gates, an armoury, paintings, photographs and maps and a gorgeous collection of palanquins – the chaises that were carried to transport the royal family.
Jantar Mantar – Even if you have little interest in astronomy don’t miss a visit to this outdoor observatory, the likes of which I have never seen before. At first glance this UNESCO World Heritage Site resembles a sculpture park but on a closer look each huge structure is a masonry instrument of great astronomical precision. It was completed in 1734 and built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh who founded Jaipur. The 19 instruments were used to measure time – the world’s largest stone sundial – the altitude of the heavenly bodies, position of the sun and so on. Our guide was enthusiastically informed about astrology and astronomy but even when my head was overfull of facts, I loved the sculptural beauty of these extraordinarily preserved instruments.
Hawa Mahal – Known as the Palace of the Winds this is one of the loveliest buildings I saw in India and we saw some stunners. It is the iconic image of Jaipur, a tall structure, in pink, with hundreds of jalis (lattice window coverings) with green shutters. This building allowed the women in the royal household to look out over the street without being seen from the outside. The best view of the building is from over the street where we climbed up many flights of steps to a rooftop restaurant where we had a wonderful view of the building while we enjoyed cups of masala chai.
Monkey Temple – Jaipur has a plethora of temples in the hills around the city and this is an unusual place. About 10km outside of Jaipur, the Galjati temple is built into the mountainside and when we arrived there were many pilgrims in brightly coloured saris and attire, the men bathing in ritual pools and the women pouring water over their hair with jugs of water. Monkeys are considered a deity in India due to the Hindu god Hanuman, half monkey, half human. At the monkey temple you can get as close to the monkeys as you choose. The babies in a creche-type sandpit were particularly cute.
Amber Fort – Each city in Rajasthan seems to have a fort, one more impressive than the next and as one visits them one learns more and more about the constituent parts they all contain. . This one, outside of Jaipur is well worth a visit. The fort is very striking from the outside. It is built – as to be expected – on top of a hill and it is reflected in a large lake that is situated below. Inside there are some extraordinary sights, chief amongst which is the exquisite glass palace, the glass being convex mirrors that are used like a mosaic on every surface. Not only is the architecture of the fort breathtaking but so is the marblework, the decorations and the sheer scale of the complex. Several visits are needed to do it justice.
Gaitor ki Chhatriyan – this is the mausoleum where the royal tombs are located. The memorial structures, constructed from white marble are best seen in the late afternoon sunshine. It is probably not a ‘must see’ item, more of a hidden gem, and we enjoyed strolling about this uncrowded and picturesque place with strikingly beautiful architecture.
Praktiki Gate – it took an age to drive here in the traffic but en route, we caught sight of the Albert Hall museum (which we did not have time for but you might want to add to your list). It is a most unusual place – a ceremonial set of arches that is somewhat like a tourist agency will all the big cities of Rajasthan represented by enormous murals. Lots of wedding photographs were being taken there so we had a great time looking at wedding couples in their fabulously colourful attire.
Shopping in Jaipur:
Jaipur is an outstanding city to shop. I took a half-empty suitcase to India and although I rarely shop while on holiday, I could not stop on this trip. Jaipur is renowned for its block print industry and there are an endless number of outlets where you can shop until you drop.
The markets are a great place to look for bracelets and trinkets. Look out for the traditional lac bracelets from Jaipur, a sort of resin which is used to make beautiful jewellery. The market alleys are not for people who suffer from claustrophobia as ‘packed in like sardines’ is the only way to describe the sort of pushing and jostling that is required to make one’s way along these narrow passageways. That said, the tiny shops are fascinating and each alley sells a different set of merchandise.
Be aware that your guides will almost certainly take you to various outlets (where they arrange commissions I believe) and you will have to be made of stone to resist the impressive skills of the salesmen. I always entered the shop saying I was not going to buy anything yet came away with armloads of items from a handmade suit (within a few hours my husband had a suit delivered to our accommodation – though it is not as cheap as one might think), tablecloths, shirts, dresses, cashmere blankets and jackets, scarves, bags, trousers – the choice is endless. Although I came back with a lot of new items, I have worn everything and had many compliments as the fabrics are gorgeous and the clothes, Indian style, are very comfortable to wear.
A final note on proper preparation and planning
Much of the success of my first trip to India and the Golden Triangle was down to the input of Popular India Vacations. We would not have seen half of what we did without a driver and the peace of mind and sense of safety that we had was priceless. The benefit of an agency of this sort is that you can provide them with the budget you are working with and they will arrange a trip accordingly with hotels in your price range. Or you can book your own accommodation if you prefer. The drivers do not only get you safely from A to B but add so much by way of their knowledge, insights, enthusiasm, and general sense of interest in your enjoying India.
