Anyone interested in life during the Victorian era will love this "living museum" and Provincial Heritage Site. The current owner, Katherine Love, who has lived here since 1967, dresses in Victorian clothing, greets visitors, and leads them on a tour through the rooms of this beautifully preserved middle-class Victorian home, designed by one of South Africa's most famous architects, Herbert Baker.

Along the way, you can view impressive collections of 19th- and 20th-century furniture, art, and household items and learn fascinating stories about the former residents and how Victorian culture and customs have influenced Johannesburg today.

A tour here takes about two hours and immerses you into the ambiance of the era. After the tour, you can top off the experience with a cup of tea on the veranda.

Exactly as its title states, the South African Museum of Military History traces the story of all the country's military conflicts. Highlights here include the World War II fighter planes and bombers, as well as exhibits of tanks, ammunition, arms, and medals.

Particularly interesting is the exhibit on medicine at war, which details the Zulu's use of traditional healing during the Anglo-Zulu war, as well as modern day treatments used on the battlefield. Another exhibit unveils life in the trenches during World War I.

Opened in 2012, this impressive museum hosts a superb collection of African art with many works from South Africa as well as West and Central Africa. The museum is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct in the trendy area of Braamfontein , which buzzes with students and university professors. Frequent temporary exhibitions infuse a freshness to the exhibits in this modern, light-filled space.

The Market Theatre complex housed in a converted market building, plays a major part in Johannesburg's cultural life. That isn’t true if you take the Red Bus tour, as you can sit back comfortably and enjoy everything this famous South African city offers. What does it have to offer? Where to begin? Johannesburg is one of the biggest cities in Africa and the biggest in the world not built on a water source. Joburg was actually built on a goldmine, so keep that in the back pocket of your pub quiz team for future reference. Joburg has its problems, but take the proper precautions, and a fabulous city will soon reveal itself.

Best things to do in Johannesburg

1.  Apartheid Museum

What is it?  A world-renowned documentation of one of modern history’s most shameful eras. An impressive collection of photographs, posters, videos, and oral histories are curated into a sequence of unique and striking displays.

Why go?  South Africa will still be recovering from its past for some time, and this excellent museum explains what happened and why.

2.  Soweto

What is it?  The township of Soweto, now home to a third of the city’s population, has a complicated past. It was created in the 1930s as a segregated neighbourhood for black residents pushed out of Jo-burg’s predominantly white suburbs. Today, you can join a local in exploring the town while learning more about the area’s past and present as you go.

Why go?  In many ways, this community is Jo’burg’s heart, so you’d be doing the city a disservice if you skip it. Ask nicely, and you’ll visit a local café for lunch and be served a pile of pap (sticky cornmeal porridge) so big you could use it to build a sandcastle.

3.  Neighbourgoods

What is it?  The food market where all the cool kids are to be found each Saturday lunchtime. Though visitors are welcome, this is very much aimed at locals, and you’ll find a young but very mixed crowd of them eating everything from pokē bowls to pecan pie.

Why go?  As well as superb eating opportunities, there’s shopping to be done; you can buy crafts from independent designers on the top floor. And on your way up, you can grab a craft beer from the rooftop bar.

4.  The Orbit

What is it?  A highly regarded music venue in lively Braamfontein where the schedule is bursting with South African talent virtually every night of the week. The food offering is unadventurous but very reliable.

Why go?  This city pulses with music, and The Orbit is among its best venues. Book a table or look out for one of their free open mic nights, where the standard makes our Britain’s Got Talent finalists sound like the local Primary school’s recorder choir.

5.  Maboneng

What is it?  Fox Street in Maboneng has become an after-hours favourite partly by engineering: local businesses put on security guards after dark to keep their customers safe. That means you’re free to chat, dance and shake your ass in the excellent restaurants and bars until late as long as you’re sensible enough to get an Uber home at the end of it.

Why go?  Incredibly delicious (and incredibly cheap) Ethiopian food from Little Addis; South African food and music at Pata Pata; whatever fun you find in between.

6.  Parkhurst

What is it?  You can barely compare the hectic, urban city centre to Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, where Mercs line the streets and flowers tumble over the garden walls’ security cameras. Parkhurst is a lovely place to spend an evening bar-hopping and eating very well.

Why go?  Atypical of the flashy neighbourhood (though still quite posh) is Coobs, a restaurant turning mainly their own organic produce into dishes that look fancy and taste extraordinarily good. The restaurant is temporarily closed, but expect it to return with a vengeance at any moment.

7.  Wits

What is it?  The University of Witwatersrand’s museum of African art has more than 12,000 pieces in its collection and is widely considered the best of its kind. Not one for paintings? No matter. Head straight for the beadwork or ceremonial sticks.

Why go?  As well as works by Irma Stern and Edoardo Villa, you’ll encounter a whole new world of artists rarely represented elsewhere. By the way, it’s pronounced ‘vitz’.

8.  Mad Giant

What is it?  A massive craft brewery right in the centre of town that offers lighthearted tours of the on-site equipment. The beer garden and spacious bar are mainly built out of strips of giant Meccano, and a massive steel monster towers over the indoor tables. Perhaps Dennis the Menace has retrained as an interior designer?

Why go?  Mad Giant beers are mad good, especially the fruity, hoppy Urban Legend IPA. 

9.  Red Bus Tour

What is it?  You know the deal; a double-decker open-top bus circles the city’s top attractions, and tourists hop on and off as they wish. An audio commentary gives background to the buildings and districts as they pass.

Why go?  It’s easy to be sneery, but in a city where exploring by foot and public transport comes with considerable risks, this is a great starting point. The audio guide’s soundtrack of South African classics might just be your new favourite mixtape.

10.  44 Stanley

What is it?  A chic little shopping complex supporting independent artists and designers. High-end chocolatiers, jewellery makers, antique shops, clothing designers and beautiful crafts are all interconnected by shaded, calm courtyards.

Why go?  If you don’t have extra space in your suitcase, you can ask about international shipping. You can mull over the decision over craft ciders at one of the cool bars nearby.

11.  Linksfield Ridge House

What is it?  A handsome mid-century building that was home to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, for six months in late 1960. His movements in the country were unsurprisingly well documented, so displays tell-all about his prison visits and work in Zimbabwe. Visits must be booked in advance.

Why go?  Apart from the obvious appeal of having a nosy around LRH’s chosen summerhouse, this striking building is like a time capsule. You half expect Don Draper to offer you a Scotch.

12.  Rosebank

What is it?  A shopping mall. Although air con and US brands may not be the main reasons you’ve travelled to a different continent, this mammoth shopping mecca is a great example of South Africa’s modern side.

Why go?  On Sundays, the rooftop car park becomes a craft market, which means unique souvenirs and excellent food, all with sunset views over the city. You can go to H&M or Topshop next time. 

13.  The Living Room

What is it?  A rooftop café and bar that is a self-proclaimed part of inner-city gentrification (which is not as controversial in Jo’burg as in Hackney or Brooklyn). The name references living things rather than settees.

Why go?  Said living things are plants – the décor is wall-to-wall leaves, literally. They used ‘plantscaping’ to create an indoor/outdoor garden that looks an absolute dream in front of the cityscape, especially as the sun sets.

Johannesburg – South Africa’s biggest city and commercial epicentre. Also known as Jozi, Joburg, or Egoli (City of Gold in Zulu), it began as a gold-mining settlement in the 19 th century.

There is more to this cosmopolitan city than shopping. If you are visiting Johannesburg, or just looking for things to do in the city, here is a list of family-friendly things to do in greater Johannesburg and the surrounding area. However even if you don’t have kids with you, you will still enjoy most of them. I have written about several of these places before – individually - but as lists are more concise and easier to access, I have compiled them below.

The hop-on hop-off bus is a great way to see the highlights of Johannesburg if you are visiting the city for the first time. The bus will take you to the main attractions in Johannesburg included many of those listed here. It also has a Soweto extension , which I would highly recommend.

2. Liberate your inner child at Gold Reef City

Gold Reef City

A visit to Gold Reef City is one of the most fun things to do in Johannesburg. South Africa’s only theme park, it is located on an old gold mine and has over 30 rides catering for different age groups.  You can also watch a 4D show, visit an underground mine, witness a gold pouring demonstration and much more.

3. Experiment with science at Sci-Bono

Sci-Bono is an interactive science centre where scientific concepts are explained with colourful and interactive gadgets, devices and experiments. Kids are encouraged to experiment to their heart’s content. Special exhibitions are often hosted at the museum.

8. See Nelson Mandela's old house in Vilakazi Street, Soweto

Soweto is the biggest township in Johannesburg and Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world to have produced two Nobel Prize winners—Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. It is also where 13-year-old Hector Pieterson was shot dead, sparking the riots on 16 June 1976.

No 8115 Vilakazi Street in Soweto is one of the most important Mandela sites in South Africa . It was the house of Nelson and Winnie Mandela from 1946 until the 1990’s. The house is now a museum containing memorabilia belonging to the Mandela family. There are several other interesting places to visit in Soweto too, like the Hector Pietersen Museum.

9. Get your adrenalin pumping at Soweto Towers

Originally the cooling towers of a decommissioned coal-fired power station, the Soweto Towers  are now an extreme sports adventure site. Attractions include the world’s first bungee jump between two cooling towers and the world’s highest Suspended Catch Air Device (SCAD) Freefall.

10. Experience the township vibe at the historic Alexandra Township

13. Go hiking in Joburg's green spaces

Hiking may not be something one would expect in a busy city but Johannesburg does have one of the biggest man-made forests in the world. There are several reserves where one can hike in and around Johannesburg like Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge and Modderfontein Nature Reserve, which have natural springs, dams, grassland and hills. Most of these reserves also have wildlife so you can do some game-viewing while you hike.

14. Go on a boat ride at Zoo Lake

This is a popular picnic and recreation area surrounding a lake. You can row boats and feed the ducks. There are on-site restaurants and kids' playgrounds too.

15. Have a picnic at  Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam

These sprawling gardens border the Emmarentia Dam. Among its features are a rose garden, a Shakespeare-inspired garden and a Huguenot memorial. You can rent canoes, watch the ducks and have a picnic.

14 Unmissable Things To Do In Johannesburg

There are many more things to do in Johannesburg than you’d imagine. 

Often overlooked in favor of other picture perfect places to visit in South Africa, Johannesburg attractions are many, varied and insightful. Jo’burg, Jozi or E’Goli, as locals affectionately call it, is also known as the “city of gold,” for its history is strictly linked to gold mining.

Today Johannesburg remains the financial center of South Africa; a city that has shaped the country’s history and politics; and a city of striking contrasts – on one side the poverty and struggles of Soweto; on the other, the glitzy skyscrapers and the secluded villas of the few rich.

Typically used as the starting point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg has changed a lot in the last 20 years.

I visited for the first time in 1997, soon after the official end of the Apartheid regime, and back then the city was in turmoil – a dangerous place where tourists were a rare sight.

Fast-forward to 2020, and you’ll find a Jozi with such a thriving cultural scene that makes it worth a visit. Spend long enough in town and you will find many interesting art galleries; very well curated museums; markets; excellent restaurants, cafés and bars.

The Best Things To Do In Johannesburg

Visit the apartheid museum.

This is one of the best places to visit in Johannesburg. You see, museums that explain the history of a country are a great way to familiarize yourself with it. So, much like the Museo de los Derechos Humanos in Chile , Yad Vashem in  Israel and the Museo de la Revolucion in Havana, Cuba,  the Apartheid Museum of Johannesburg is a must-see.

There is no other way to put it: the Apartheid Museum simply is one of the unmissable places to visit in Johannesburg – and if you ask me, the one that most deserves a visit when in town for a short time. Opened in 

Opened in 2001, the massive exhibit is a combination of paper clippings, documents, films, photos and other historical artefacts that take you through the history of Apartheid. There is an entire exhibit dedicated to Nelson Mandela.

Some will tell you to spend at least two hours browsing through the exhibit, but I think you need four as a minimum. I even know of people that, after spending 3 or 4 hours in the museum, have actually gone back the next day to explore more.

Upon arrival, you will be given an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white. The entrance is different, depending on the color of the skin. That’s just to set the atmosphere for the rest of the visit.

The Apartheid Museum is one of the stops on the Hop On – Hop Off Bus. So you can get there fairly easily. Get your hop-on hop-off pass here .

I recommend taking this Johannesburg and Soweto Apartheid Full Day Tour . It’s the one I took when I visited and truly enjoyed it.

Explore Soweto

Soweto (short for South Western Township, which actually was a separate municipality until 2002) is the massive township that was created by the white government between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th with the aim of keeping the white and black population of South Africa separate.

At about 20 km from Jo’burg, nowadays Soweto is the largest township in South Africa, counting around 1.3 million inhabitants. It became internationally popular for being the location for the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s final match and where the closing ceremony was held.

Soweto has an interesting, unique and rich history of civil unrest and fight against the Apartheid regime, as well as its rich cultural heritage.

Upon visiting you will learn about the harsh reality of life there – although the latest governments have been making an effort to improve the infrastructure.

Many live in corrugated iron houses. A few big, modern and comfortable houses have appeared here and there. Yet despite the difficult living conditions, people there are extremely friendly. Children are eager to pose for photographs – “shoot me, shoot me!” you will hear them say. 

The main landmarks in Soweto are:

THE MEMORIAL SITE OF HECTOR PIETERSON – Pieter was shot dead at the age of 12 during the 1976 student uprising and protests as Afrikaans had been imposed as the only language of education. You can also visit the museum by the same name.

VILAKAZI STREET – The street that has been named after the first black African to teach at the University of Witwatersrand (one of the best universities in Africa) is where Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela used to live with his wife and where his family kept living, throughout the years and despite the continued harassment by the police forces. You can also visit the former home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. 

The best way to experience Soweto is on guided tours – you really need someone that takes you to the main landmarks and tells you about their relevance. So, one of the best things to do in Johannesburg is signing up for a tour.

I took a bike tour that departed from Soweto Backpackers, but you can find many good ones sold online such as this Johannesburg and Soweto Apartheid Full Day Tour or this Johannesburg and Soweto half day tour – I really recommend a guided tour to appreciate the history and significance of the area.

Go to the Cradle of Humankind

Visiting the Cradle of Humankind is a must when in Johannesburg. Now one of South Africa UNESCO World Heritage sites , this is located at about 40 minutes drive from downtown Jozi, and known as the place where humankind begun, this is the site where the first-ever hominid fossil – an Australopithecus Africanus – was found in 1924.

The fossil is currently on display at Maropeng Visitor Center. 

About 10 km from the Cradle of Humankind you will find the Sterkfontein Caves, which are six linked underground chambers with a lake set at about 40 meters below ground level. This is where Mrs Ples (a pre-human skull) and Little Foot (a complete hominid skeleton) were found. 

A guided tour to visit the Cradle of Humankind is recommended. You have the option of taking this Full-Day Cradle of Humankind Tour & Lunch which is perfect for those who don’t want to drive.

And to Constitution Hill

Visiting Constitution Hill will give you more insights into the country’s history. This former prison was known as The Fort and became infamous for the terrible living conditions and brutal treatment of political prisoners and other criminals.

Among the most notable prisoners there were Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Constitution Hill overlooks the city and is now the site of some interesting exhibits which include Number Four museum, the Old Fort museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol museum.

Where there once was the old “Awaiting Trial” there now is the Constitutional Court of South Africa, which you can visit on guided tours such as this one .

Wander around Maboneng Precint

Visiting Maboneg Precind truly is a must-do when in Johannesburg. The name means “place of light” and light you’ll surely get there.

Once this was a run-down part of town, but renovation project turned it into one of the most up and coming neighborhoods, where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, bars, boutiques, art galleries – make sure not to miss Arts on Main and Revolution House – and great places to stay. 

The Market on Main is one of the best known in town. For entertainment, go to Bioscope, an independent cinema. 

This walking tour of Maboneng is a great option for those who want to learn a bit more about the area.

Visit a market

Located in Braamfontein, one of the most up and coming student districts in the city, Neighbourgoods Market was opened in 2011 and quickly became more than just a place to try delicious food from around the world. 

The market is located in a massive building whose facade was decorated by Edoardo Villa. At the parking lot located in the basement you will find the market proper. The second floor offers beautiful views of the city and the rooftop is where you will find vintage boutiques and jewelry stalls. 

It quite simply is a fun place to hang out with friends, and one of the most fun things to do in Johannesburg.

Braamfontein is also home to the Wits Museum, which opened in 2012 and is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct. It has a fantastic collection of works from African artists.

If you are a fan of flea markets, check out the one in the parking lot of Market Theater, one of Johannesburg attractions. This is converted market building where you will find a bookshop, an art gallery, a jazz venue. Adjoint you will also find Museum Africa. 

Take a day trip to Pilanesberg National Park

If you feel like getting out of town, head to Pilanesberg National Park. At just 2.5 hours drive from Jo’burg, this is a fantastic place to see wildlife – and much easier to explore compared to Kruger.

The park is located in an extinct volcano crater, in a transition zone between the Kalahari Desert and the Lowveld, which means that the wildlife is very varied there. Expect to see the Big Five, as well as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and even wild dogs and various species of birds.

You can visit Pilanesberg National Park on this guided day trip from Johannesburg that includes transportation and lunch.

The Lion and Safari Park, located close to the Cradle of Humankind, is often cited as a fun day trip from Johannesburg. It’s supposed to be a sanctuary where you can go for game drives (guided or self-guided) and even interact with animals.

Or to Pretoria

55 km and less than an hour drive from Jo’burg, Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, may as well be on a different planet.

The city is packed with beautiful gardens – visit in the spring and the colors of the jacaranda will be quite a sight. Unmissable sights include the Voortrekker Monument and Heritage Site and Freedom Park, as well as the National Botanic Garden.

You can get to Pretoria easily on the Gautrain. Alternatively you can join a guided tour departing from Johannesburg such as this one that includes transportation and a guide.

Browse around Johannesburg Art Gallery

With an impressive collection spread across its halls and gardens, Johannesburg Art Gallery is one of the best places to visit in Johannesburg.

Located in Joubert Park, the exhibit includes prints dating back to the 15th century; 17th century paintings: and the works of artists such as Dalí and Picasso. There is a section entirely dedicated to local artists such as Sekoto and Pierneef. Admission is free.

Explore Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

There are nine national botanical gardens in South Africa, and Walter Sisulu is one of them. It’s the perfect place to visit if you feel like immersing yourself in nature without having to leave the city.

Its highlights certainly are the Witpoortjie Waterfall and the views of red-rock cliffs. There even is a Birds and Butterfly Garden (black eagles are known to nest in the park1!) and a Fern Trail, and a Children’s Garden too. 

If you are in town with your kids in tow, you may want to visit Gold Reef City. Boasting accurate reproductions of the times of the gold rush, fun rides, rollercoasters, a trampoline park, and historical exhibits, it is a fun place for the entire family.

Visit Lindfield Victorian House Museum

If you are as fascinated as I am by life in Victorian times the Lindfield Victorian House Museum, a Provincial Heritage Site is a must-see. Katharine Love, the owner of the house and still living there, will guide guide you around this living museum fully dressed in Victorian attire.

This Victorian home that was designed by Herbert Baker and the furniture and items on display all date back to the 19th and early 20th century, and are incredibly well kept. 

Have a traditional African meal in Soweto

South Africa has such a rich cultural heritage that this is reflected in its food too, and one of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is enjoying the food. Johannesburg is thought to be the foodie capital of South Africa, but if you want to go for something super-traditional, opt for a typical African meal in Soweto.

Local delicacies include chicken neck; chicken feet; pigs feet and tripe – all accompanied by a variety of salads and the unmissable “paap,” a maize kind of dow which is actually quite similar to polenta.

Seeing a city from above gives a whole different perspective about it. One of the coolest things to do in Johannesburg is to go on a hot air balloon ride.

This way you can get an idea of how vast the city is.

Take the hop-on hop-off bus

Hop-on hop-off buses are actually a great way to get to know a city, as they connect all the main tourist sites. Johannesburg attractions are all connected on an easy to follow tour that you can do independently over the course of one or two days. It’s one of the top things to do in Johannesburg. 

There are two good hop on hop off bus tours in Jozi. One is this 1 or 2 Day Johannesburg Hop-On, Hop-Off Tour ; the other is this Johannesburg Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Ticket and Soweto Tour .

Practical Guide

How to get to johannesburg.

Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport is one of the main African hubs, with all major international carriers landing there. At any time of year, you will be able to find incredibly cheap deals for flights from Europe and even from the United States. 

The easiest way to get from OR Tambo International Airport to downtown Johannesburg is to take the Gautrain. Trains run every 15 to 30 minutes from 4:50 am to around 9:00 pm.

After that, you should take a taxi or a shuttle bus.

Where To Stay In Johannesburg

A city as vast as Johannesburg is packed with good accommodation options, for any budget and needs. Here are some of the best places to stay in and around Jozi:

• Curiocity Backpacker is a good hostel located in Maboneng, near to a lot of bars and pubs. It’s perfect for backpackers and solo travelers.
• The Aviator is a good hotel near the airport, in Kempton Park, and offers a very convenient and free shuttle to and from the airport. It has beautiful common areas and a good breakfast.
• Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers is perfect if you would rather stay in Soweto. It’s located on the outskirts of the city; the atmosphere is easygoing, and the rooms lovely.

When to visit in Johannesburg

Although locals may complain about the cold temperatures in Johannesburg during the Fall and Winter, in my experience those are actually great times to visit. I visited in May and August and both times I was positively surprised by how lovely the weather was.

Even in winter, the weather was warmer than Sardinia , where winter is notoriously mild. In fact, last time I visited it was actually warmer than Sardinia where it was late spring. 

In general, the best time to visit Johannesburg is supposed to be between March and May, when the summer heat is gone; and between September and November, before temperatures rise again. That’s also when you’ll find the most convenient flight and hotel deals.

Safety in Johannesburg

Johannesburg is much safer today than it used to be in the past, but you must always keep your eyes open.

Some tips for keeping safe include using Uber for transportation; keeping on the tourist route (follow that of the Hop On Hop Off bus, for example); follow locals’ advice (if they recommend not going to a place or to travel by Uber, just do that!); and join organized group tours.

For safety reasons, I recommend getting a local SIM card as soon as you arrive in South Africa. You can use data for apps such as Google Maps and Uber and to have access to local emergency numbers.

After surviving the ordeal of getting a SIM card in India , I found getting one in South Africa easy peasy. It takes no more than 10 minutes to get it activated, and you need is to show your passport and cash or card to pay. I opted for a Vodacom, as it is the network that has the best coverage in the country.

Thank you for such warm words about my country, my city. Joburg definitely has a vibe to it and there is so much more to it. Actually the whole Gauteng province. Another suggestion I would like to add is a visit to The Long March to Freedom Sculpture Park and the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria which is about 70km from Joburg, though you can use the Gautrain too.

I heard about the Gautrain!! A friend of mine lives in Cape Town, but he’s originally from Jozi and his family lives in Pretoria, so he goes there often and takes the train. Also, while traveling across Namibia I met a guy who told me he had been to Pretoria and found it way more interesting than he had expected. What can I say – I am coming back soon, so these will be added to the “places to visit in Johannesburg” list!

So many of these places have closed down di check everything before you go. The Apartheid Museum is sadly no longer. Neither is Market on Main or Neighbourgoods Market. Maboneng is mostly desolate now. But there is a new market in Newtown on Saturdays with live music in the afternoon.

The Apartheid Museum is temporarily closed until further notice. It will hopefully open again soon.

Though the city – like the rest of South Africa – is still dealing with the legacy of racial segregation, it has become a truly diverse place. Walk around Johannesburg and you’ll hear snatches of Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa, but you may also catch some Urdu, Hindi or Chinese.

High-intensity in everything it does, Johannesburg manages not only to be the country’s biggest and the continent’s richest city but also – at least according to the locals – the world’s largest man-made forest. There are some ten million trees dotted around, lending the place a surprisingly fresh and spacious feel.

With a thriving arts scene, well-established café culture and Soweto, the country‘s most populous township, Johannesburg buzzes with entertainment. Not to be missed is the live music- Johannesburg offers the best nightlife in South Africa, attracting top musical performers from around the country and abroad. While bustling neighbourhood markets give you a taste of the local fields, vineyards, brewers, distillers and artisan foodies, with craft and design thrown in.

As sub-Saharan Africa’s economic and tourism hub, South Africa is well served with flights from London and the rest of Europe. The majority of these touchdown at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. From North America there are a relatively small number of nonstop flights into Johannesburg, you’ll have to change planes or stop for refuelling. Upon arrival, there is a Johannesburg tourist information booth at the airport.

The fastest and easiest way to get to the city from the airport – especially during the dreaded morning and afternoon rush hours – is on the Gautrain rail link. Shuttle buses, taxis and car rentals are also available but check with your accommodation first to see if they offer a courtesy service.

Johannesburg’s public transport system is improving fast, with the Gautrain rail and bus network and the Rea Vaya Rapid Transit bus (BRT) system being very well received by city residents. However, driving still remains very much the order of the day in Joburg, though the CBD and some suburbs, notably Melville, are easily explored on foot. Most of Johannesburg’s municipal Metrobus routes start and end at the main terminus in Gandhi Square. Buses only run between the suburbs and the centre, so are useless for getting from one suburb to another, unless they both lie on the same route to town.

If you are wanting to venture outside the city- short of joining a tour - the only way to get to national parks and the more remote coastal areas is by car. Likewise, some of the most interesting places off the beaten track are only accessible in your own vehicle, as buses tend to ply just the major routes.

The short answer is: yes, it’s safe to visit.

The slightly longer answer is that when you explore Johannesburg, some areas are safer than others. The northern suburbs are fine to wander around freely, and downtown areas like Maboneng – a no-go area barely a decade ago – have become safe and exciting models of urban regeneration.

Tourists are most at risk of opportunistic crimes like theft and mugging. The best way to protect yourself is to use your common sense: don’t stand on a street corner with your DSLR around your neck staring at a map; don’t carry all your cash around with you; and if you’re going to a less safe district, hire a local guide.

As you’d expect from a city this size, there’s a lot to do – starting with retail therapy. Other than Melville’s 27 Boxes , a bunch of shipping containers filled with shops and restaurants, the northern suburbs are mostly home to opulent, anonymous malls. Downtown is much more inspiring, Maboneng's Market on Main – a Sunday staple for arts, crafts and street food – and Collector’s Treasury – a labyrinthine, longstanding bookshop – among the best spots.

If you’re still (somehow) hungry, head next to Maboneng for memorable African-Asian fusion at Blackanese , a generous Argentine grill at Che , or Ethiopian cuisine at Little Addis Cafe . After dinner, join the young, mixed crowd at Living Room for a sundowner with a view.

Continue your night by exploring Joburg’s thriving jazz scene – Braamfontein institution The Orbit is known as South Africa’s best jazz bar, with Sophiatown’s Afrikan Freedom Station another historic venue. A more recent addition is the Marabi Club , which pays homage to the early 20th-century marabi music scene; the classic cocktails and waistcoated waiters set the vintage vibe.

The northern suburbs offer luxury hotels and prestigious developments, with Sandton the best known – but its international hotel chains and mega-malls could be anywhere. Melville and Parkhurst are less polished, more endearing options with good streetlife and independent businesses; consider Little Forest Guest House and Die Agterplaas .

In the CBD (Central Business District), you could spoil yourself with a stay at the new Hallmark House hotel , in an arresting industrial-style building just outside Maboneng. An excellent budget option is Curiocity Backpackers , right in the heart of the district.

Alternatively, head to Soweto and stay at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers , run by local Lebo Malepa. This sprawling township – about a third of Joburgers live here – is where the city’s non-white residents were forced to live during apartheid. Its history is one of struggle but also of hope, encapsulated by Vilakazi Street, where you can see the homes of both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.

There are plenty of places nearby to get some breathing space, with the Magaliesberg mountain range particularly popular with Joburgers – head to Hartbeespoort Dam to get a cable car straight up into the mountains. Relax afterwards at Silver Orange Bistro, with its contemporary South African cuisine, wine list long enough for repeat visits, and gorgeous setting in an orange orchard.

If you’re after adrenaline rather than R&R, try Ama Zwing Zwing , a great zipline experience under an hour’s drive from the city; the larger Canopy Tour Magaliesberg is about an hour and a half. For hiking and biking, make a beeline for the forty square kilometres of Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. You can camp overnight and follow the Rustenberg Hiking Trail for a couple of days, or explore one of the shorter routes.

The archaeological sites of the Cradle of Humankind are easily accessible from Joburg; the Sterkfontein Caves, where Mrs Ples and Little Foot (Australopithecus fossils) were found, are a highlight. At the Maropeng Museum you can see the incredible homo Naledi fossils excavated in the area – plus a fascinating video about their discovery in a tiny chamber almost 100 feet underground (claustrophobes should cover their eyes).

Going on safari in the malaria-free reserves of North West Province is another great way to escape the city. Madikwe is an excellent reserve near the Botswana border and is refreshingly uncrowded as no independent day visits are allowed (you have to book through one of the lodges).

To safari independently you should head to Pilanesberg , just a couple of hours’ drive from Joburg. That said, you’ll still get the most memorable experience by staying at a lodge – Kwa Maritane and Bakubung are great choices for their experienced rangers who will impress you with their knowledge on a game drive or bush walk.

Apartheid Museum Apartheid Museum

For a thorough understanding of South Africa's appalling apartheid era, a visit to Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum is a must. The museum features a series of graphic yet informative exhibits, including an array of hanging nooses that represent the execution of 131 government opponents and a series of televisions that show footage of anti-apartheid residents being attacked and killed. The museum also features several interactive exhibits, such as a room where visitors are invited to move a stone from the right to a pile on the left to show their commitment to fighting discrimination and racism. There's also two museum entrances – one for whites and one for nonwhites – to denote the physical separations once apparent during apartheid.

Although several recent travelers warned that you will feel emotional while making your way through this attraction, many agreed that the Apartheid Museum's heartbreaking atmosphere is necessary to help you truly understand what occurred during this period. And remember to take your time here. With so much information to digest, at least a few hours (if not a full day) is recommended.

Mandela House Mandela House

Constructed in 1945 in the Orlando West section of Soweto, Johannesburg, the Mandela House became the home for Nelson Mandela (also known as Madiba) and his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase in 1946. Although the pair divorced shortly after, Mandela continued to live in this quaint brick structure. His second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, eventually joined him here in 1948, and together the couple resided at the property with their two daughters. However, due to Mandela's prominence in the anti-apartheid movement, he was forced to leave his family to try to evade government authorities. As a result, Madiba would not return to his home until 1990 when he was released from prison following his arrest in 1962. But after a mere 11 days in the home, Mandela permanently left this Soweto property in favor of a larger, more secure home in Jozi's Houghton neighborhood, where he resided until his death in 2013.

After Madiba left his Soweto home, the property was converted into a museum, which now includes family belongings, honorary degrees and awards given to the former president, original kitchen appliances and furniture, and photographs of Mandela and his family. Although small in size, most visitors appreciate the insight this structure gives into South Africa's most famous politician. Another noteworthy feature: In the home's exterior, bullet holes and fire damage left from petrol bombs used during police raids are still visible.

Constitution Hill Constitution Hill

Located in the city's Braampark neighborhood, Constitution Hill provides travelers with a mix of old and new Jo'burg. For those looking for historic Jozi, there's the Women's Gaol, the Old Fort and Number Four, three former prisons that were used to separately house female, white and black political prisoners until 1987. Famous inmates of Number Four include Mohandas Gandhi and Robert Sobukwe, while the Women's Gaol once held prominent female activists like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Fatima Meer and Albertina Sisulu. And iconic anti-apartheid leader Nelson "Madiba" Mandela holds the distinction of being the Old Fort's only black prisoner, kept here because of his status and escape concerns.

Also within steps of the former prisons is the Constitutional Court. Known as South Africa's highest court (much like the United States' Supreme Court), the Constitutional Court was founded after apartheid ended in 1994 and continues to serve as the highest court in important legal and constitutional matters. The property also features several noteworthy elements, such as a low-lying window that allows people to look into the court from outside (which represents the court's transparency) and an eye-level judges podium decorated with different Nguni cowhides (indicative of the diversity of the bench and equality between judges and lawyers).

Maboneng Precinct Maboneng Precinct free

Lovers of good food, contemporary art and trendy shops will enjoy exploring the city's Maboneng Precinct. Known for its eclectic vibe (think New York City 's Chelsea neighborhood or the Hackney area of London ), the once unsafe Maboneng Precinct now offers an array of quirky galleries, eateries, clubs and stores, many of which are housed in former factories and warehouses. The majority are located inside of Arts on Main, a multi-purpose building that acts as the neighborhood's central creative hub.

Although many of the shops are open during the week, Maboneng is best experienced on the weekend, most notably Sunday. That's when the neighborhood's popular Market on Main is held, which locals and tourists alike flock to for its array of international fare, live music and fun atmosphere. Another popular time to visit is on the first Thursday of every month — excluding January and April — when the area offers a night market, complete with live music and lots of food and crafts.

Montecasino Bird Gardens Montecasino Bird Gardens

One of Jo'burg's most popular family attractions, the Montecasino Bird Gardens – which sits about 19 miles northwest of downtown – houses an array of brightly colored birds, reptiles and smaller mammals within a lush garden setting. In addition to strolling through the property's grounds, visitors can feed more than 60 species of birds in the aviary or enjoy a 30-minute bird show at the on-site amphitheater.

Overall, past travelers raved about the Montecasino Bird Gardens. In particular, many appreciated the park's friendly staff, reasonable entrance fee and entertaining bird show. To truly make the most of your visit, reviewers suggested buying some food at the ticket office to feed to the birds.

South African National Museum of Military History South African National Museum of Military History

Whether you're a history buff, a military enthusiast or just want a place to cool off on a hot South African day, odds are you'll enjoy the South African National Museum of Military History. With an array of military exhibits that include everything from military vehicles and service medals to Anglo-Boer War paraphernalia and a small arms display, there's plenty to peruse. But the standout here is the museum's military aircraft collection, which features iconic planes like a Messerschmitt Me 262 fighter jet, a Blackburn Buccaneer S Mk 50 carrier-borne strike airplane and a de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito combat plane made mostly of wood.

In addition to its informative, attention-grabbing displays, travelers rave about the museum's friendly staff and well-maintained grounds. What's more, thanks to its kid-appropriate exhibits and proximity to the Johannesburg Zoo, the South African National Museum of Military History is a convenient attraction for visitors traveling with children.

Gold Reef City Gold Reef City

For a bit of heart-pounding fun, families cannot pass up an opportunity to explore Gold Reef City. Influenced by the region's prominent gold mining industry, this Jozi amusement park includes attractions like Tower of Terror (a former gold mine head converted into a freefall ride), Jozi Express (a rollercoaster with sweeping city views and several mine dump drop-offs) and Anaconda (a high-speed coaster ideal for adrenaline junkies). A kids section, multiple water rides and tamer experiences like gold panning and mine tours are also offered.

While some past visitors said the park is merely a wannabe Disney World , others argued Gold Reef City offers plenty of fun for adults and kids of all ages. Additionally, many of the food offerings receive high praise. But if you aren't a fan of long wait times for rides, avoid the park during the holidays. Instead, consider visiting during the offseason on a Wednesday or Thursday when local students are in school.

Johannesburg Zoo

3 South Africa’s largest zoo, Johannesburg Zoo, is a great destination for families to take kids on a mini jungle safari. With a mission to develop, maintain, and conserve public open spaces for future generations, the zoo is part of a larger green initiative in the city. Founded in 1904, the Joburg Zoo houses over 320 species of animals, totaling roughly 2 000 animals with the white lions being a fan favorite. Tours can be used and facilitated with prior notice.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

Within walking distance is the Hector Peterson Museum, named after the 12-year-old boy who was shot by police on the first day of the 1976 Soweto uprising. The museum tells the full story of the Soweto uprising and the brutal tactics used by government forces to suppress it, resulting in the deaths of over 550 protesters. It has a range of exhibits, but what sets it apart is the touching personal memories of harrowing events.

Constitution Hill

Tourists are shown to the Old Fort prison complex, which presents a real picture of the great struggle in South Africa. Johannesburg Art Gallery

7 The city of Johannesburg’s renowned art gallery boasts an extensive collection of famous works by domestic and foreign artists. Since opening in 1915, JAG’s home on the edge of Joubert Park has remained at the center of Johannesburg’s art establishment. The gallery boasts the largest public collection of modern and contemporary art in sub-Saharan Africa with some exhibits at the Johannesburg Art Gallery dating back to the 15th century.

J ohannesburg, South Africa’s largest city and its financial hub, is a city of contrasts with plenty of things to see and do. This is the hot heart of South Africa, a thriving cosmopolitan city where the past and present meet to create an unforgettable destination, where innovation, creativity, and enterprise flourish.

From glittering skyscrapers to beautiful boutique hotels, there’s something for all accommodation tastes in this town. While it may be tempting to book with one of those huge, well-known, international chains, there are so many other great — and in my opinion much better — options to choose from.

And as such, it feels more like an urban resort than a city hotel — unusually spread out and linked via a winding cobbled street. This contemporary, classy, and large hotel offers panoramic views of Johannesburg and is within easy distance of some of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods.

As it was developed as a residential estate, the 117 rooms vary a great deal but have been divided into five categories. Size determines the category, but frankly, the view is more important. Try to book one of the Superior Rooms with a city view. For guaranteed views, book a room that specifies “panoramic view.”

The terraced, elevated location, with its panoramic views, is something special. The city’s hippest and most interesting neighborhoods — Maboneng, Braamfontein, Melville, and Parkhurst — are all a 15-minute drive away. The hotel facilities include an excellent spa and lap pool, two main restaurants, and an outdoor bar located near the top of the property to make the most of the views. The Parkview Golf Club is 1 mile away, Nelson Mandela Square 7 miles, and O.R. Tambo International Airport 20 miles.

4. Pablo House

If you are looking for somewhere hip to stay in Johannesburg, then this funky little guesthouse, located in one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods, is the spot for you. Melville, one of Johannesburg’s oldest residential suburbs, has always appealed to the more bohemian types. Situated on the highest point in Melville with well-appointed rooms and a great atmosphere, Pablo House offers expansive views and a central location at affordable prices.

With a great eye for contemporary art, the owners have filled the interior spaces with eye-catching paintings and bold-colored furniture. The eight rooms vary in size and vantage, but all are designed for comfort. The facilities are impressive for such a small residential-style guesthouse: a cool lounge bar, a restaurant (open to the public), and a staircase leading to a swimming pool (residents only). Service is good and they can arrange tours and transfers that are outsourced to a reputable company.

Nearby 7th Street is lined with bars that spill onto the pavement and great restaurant choices. Pablo’s is also close to important spots like Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum. It’s a 25-minute ride to hip and happening Maboneng. And the Rosebank Mall, if you’re into shopping, is only 15 minutes away. The airport is 40 minutes away.

5. Hallmark House Hotel

Housed in a former diamond-polishing center, the Hallmark House Hotel is a stylish and artsy place to stay in Johannesburg. Maboneng Precinct, just a few 100 meters from the hotel, is unique in South Africa: a down-at-heel industrial area that’s been regenerated and reinvented as a dynamic cultural and creative hub and one of the most exciting quarters of Johannesburg. There’s really no better place if you want to see the modern face of South Africa and get a sense of how far the country’s come and where it’s headed.

You need to be a little strategic when choosing where to stay in Johannesburg because getting around can take a while; it’s a big, sprawling city with what can be crazy traffic. But there’s a lot of choice and hopefully I’ve given you a few suggestions to get you started.

Most of Michigan  doesn't fall in the path of totality , but assuming skies are clear at any point within the 2.5-hour span or so , you can still see the moon crossing the sun with eclipse glasses or a safe eclipse viewer .

There's one small sliver of Monroe County, near Toledo, that's  expected to be in the path of totality . This means the area will likely dim and temperatures drop a few degrees as the moon's shadow covers the sun.

The April 8, 2024, solar eclipse will start in northern Mexico before making its way into the United States, starting when the shadow of the moon passes into Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT.
