Solo Travel in Morocco
“Where you go, do what you see” and Morocco is no exception. Remember that it is a Muslim country, so you will have to adapt to their customs, such as covering your shoulders and knees in public areas. It also helps to not draw any attention to yourself. The souks are a bustling place to be but you do need to be careful with pickpockets. Locals on motorbikes race through the small narrow streets so keep your wits about you in the medinas.
Bargaining is part of Moroccan national culture. During your stay, you will have to negotiate the final price of any purchase or service and haggle. Not only in the souks, but also with taxi or bus drivers. Keep in mind that most places do not accept credit cards but prices are usually negotiable. It is also very common for local people to come and help you and then ask for a tip. In these cases, it is better to clarify the cost in advance and be firm if you are not looking for any assistance.
Share a tea with local people – The perfume of mint tea is a characteristic aroma of the streets of Morocco. It is very common for Moroccans to invite you for a glass of tea when you arrive at a house, in a restaurant or even when you enter a shop to bargain. For them it is a sign of respect and hospitality towards a foreigner, so it would be very impolite not to accept it. It is usually served in small cane glasses decorated with various colors and has an intense sweet taste. They use mint as a refreshing drink to help alleviate the effect of the heat that is usually present in Morocco.
Try the local cuisine – There are many traditional dishes that make up the delicious and extensive Moroccan cuisine, also suitable for vegetarians, which as a traveler you will find throughout the country, from street stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants. You should definitely try these local dishes during your stay.
The tajine, a very slow cooking stew that owes its name to the earthenware container with a conical-shaped lid in which it is cooked and then served. Couscous in all its varieties: chicken, lamb, fish or vegetables. A Pastilla, a mixture of sweet and salty, made with layers of puff pastry filled with meat slices, interspersed with an almond paste, spiced with cinnamon and sugar.
Visit a mosque – During your stay in Morocco you will have to visit some mosques, although you have to take into account that the entrance will not always be allowed, since the mosques are the places of worship of the Muslims and a symbol of faith. They are usually decorated with drawings, geometric and floral carvings and even Islamic calligraphy.
Admire its architecture – One of the main attractions of Morocco is its architecture: an exotic mix of Black African and Islamic styles, although the latter has a stronger component. Morocco is a country faithful to its ancient traditions and cultures, where even modern buildings retain their architectural roots, managing to modernize their cities without losing the richness and beauty of its past.
You will not only be able to observe this in the facades of the buildings, but also in its courtyards and gardens, where the contrasts and deep colours stand out. Geometric patterns, mostly made with mosaics, are very common to find in Moroccan architecture.
From strolling through its labyrinthine medinas to sleeping in the desert, there are many reasons why you should choose Morocco for your solo trip. Its cultural diversity, its proximity and its vibrancy. Morocco is definitely an experience and its colour, smells and sensations will leave a lasting impact. Here are our favourite places to visit in Morocco.
The main square (Jemaa el-Fnaa) of Marrakech's medina at night
The medinas are the ancient cities and are usually surrounded by walls and towers. These are where the traditional dwellings of the local people are mixed with mosques, gardens, souks and madrasas, and the labyrinthine narrow streets are the perfect place to lose yourself.
The medina in Marrakesh is a labyrinth of lanes. The guide books warn of locals weaving through on noisy motorbikes, but the reality really isn't that bad. Moroccans are welcoming and like anywhere you need to keep your wits about you, but mingling with the locals and bartering with shop keepers is all part of the culture. In the maze of souks you can buy anything from stunning art, embroidered cushions and leather handbags, or just take a rest and sip a mint tea within one of tiny shops.
In Marrakech you can find one of the most famous and beautiful madrassas in the Islamic world: The Ben Youssef Madrassa. Madrasas are schools where religious teachings are given in addition to the classical subjects. It is also the place where students from other regions live. They usually have a central courtyard with a fountain and several rooms around it, dedicated to study or student dormitories.
Another beautiful place to visit is the Yves Saint Laurent garden – Jardin Majorelle. It boasts vivaciously coloured buildings and stunning plants right in the middle of the city, making it an enchanting escape from the busy streets of Marrakech.
When the sun has set on Jemaa el Fna, Marrakech's famous tourist square. Gone are the snake charmers and tourist touts and the locals are out in force. * Read more: Jemaa el-Fna
Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and one that is generally overlooked but if you like architecture, arts and culture, surfing or cuisine then it’s a good place to spend a few days. It's also a good place to stop if you're travelling up to Fez. Because of its French colonial legacy it is a diverse city, and it's also home to the second largest mosque in the world. You can take a guided tour around the Hassan II Mosque that spectacularly o verlooks the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s easy to meet others here due to the surfing culture, and you can spend your day sunbathing or surfing at La Corniche, a beach area with a holiday feel, nearby the mosque. In the evening you can visit Sky 28, a bar that offers great views of the city whilst enjoying some live music. During the day you can get lost in the labyrinth of the Old Medina and search for the Berber Mosque, or take a stroll in the Parc de la Ligue Arabe.
Visit one of the museums such as: the Villa des Arts; a museum displaying the country’s heritage and contemporary art, or the Museum of Moroccan Judaism where you can learn more about the Jewish influence in Morocco. If you love palaces and are strolling around the city, make sure to see the King’s Palace, although you are not allowed to enter, it is worth a look from the outside.
After being in the big cities, you will want nothing more than to escape to the Atlantic coast for a slower pace of life. Essaouira is a favourite for independent travellers and one of the places worth staying for several days. Framed by an early 16th century Portuguese fortification, the photogenic city of Essaouira allows you the chance to stroll through the beautiful streets of its medina, admiring the houses painted white and blue.
When you're not exploring you can make the most of its calm waters by taking part in a water sport or just enjoying some rays. From here you can take a quad bike into the desert, get pampered in a traditional hamman, walk around the blue village or just photograph the palm groves whilst breathing in the Atlantic coast breeze.
Morocco has four imperial cities for the cultured traveller to explore, and Meknes is one of our favourites. Home of Sultan Moulay Ismail, its architecture is an ode to the craftsmanship of the Spanish Moors, and its streets lie enclosed within towering walls and exquisitely crafted gates. Filled with a wealth of historical treasures, it is conveniently located close to the famed Roman ruins of Volubilis , which are well worth a visit in their own right.
In the days of yore, Volubilis was a vibrant and busy Roman settlement. It acted as the administrative heartland of Mauretania Tingitana, an ancient and important province. Its grain and olive oil were famed throughout the empire, and the fertile lands surrounding it provide a rich agricultural yield to this day. Abandoned by the Romans at the end of the 3 rd century AD, it remained a thriving town for many years, and today acts as an important and fascinating reminder of the region's storied history.
Draa Valley
Those in search of adventure should also journey to Draa Valley, one of the most stunning landscapes in Morocco. With the wide Draa River meandering through its middle, it is a wonderland of palm groves and hidden Berber villages and the perfect place to get away from civilisation.
Sahara Desert
The Sahara Desert is one of the most magical places to visit, and the Erg Chebbi dunes are the ideal spot to see it in all of its wild glory. At 150 metres tall, they cast a long shadow across the tangerine sands surrounding them. The best way to see them is from the back of a camel, and although it's not the most comfortable mode of transport, it is definitely an authentic way to take in the stunning scenery.
Entering the Sahara from Morocco is relatively easy: just head towards Merzouga, one of the villages at the foot of the sandy region of Erg Chebbi, from where you will get the classic images of the desert. The Erg covers a region of 110 km² including the Great Dune, which is 150 metres high.
If you are thinking of a trip to Morocco, the country is romantic, stunning and once experienced, is never forgotten.
If you feel more comfortable in a group for either part of your trip or the whole duration, G Adventures is a responsible tour company which mainly caters towards budget travellers. Most tours have an average of 12 people and there is no upper age limit. Once you book your trip you pay extra for any excursions you want to do when you’re there.
G Adventures – G Adventures trips to Morocco range from a 5 day coastal Morocco: waves and waterfall adventure seeing Marrakech, Essaouira, Taghazout, and Paradise Valley, a 7 day Moroccan desert adventure through river canyons, to a 17 days Morocco adventure seeing the best of the country’s culture and colour. There are plenty of adventures in Morocco whether you have a week or two weeks to travel. I have personally used G Adventures and recommend them as a solo female friendly company.

Intrepid Travel – Intrepid Travel is similar to G Adventures with an average of 12 people on each tour. They tend to use hotels instead of hostels and have a more comfortable style of accommodation hence the trips can appear a bit more costly than G Adventures. Their trips are carbon offset and their Intrepid Morocco trips range from a 7 day Mount Toubkal trek, a 7 day Morocco: hike, bike and horse ride adventure, to a 15 day Best of Morocco especially for solo travellers. With both tour companies you share a room with someone of the same gender or you can pay extra for your own room.
Day Tours – Get Your Guide helps you to find top-rated activities and day tours in worldwide destinations including Morocco. Choose from a Marrakech quad bike experience in the desert, a guided tour of Fez medina, a day tour to Chefchaouen; the Blue Town, or a trip to Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains. There are many to choose from and it’s really simple to use. Just check the reviews, price and availability then book online.

While you can find western hotels, staying in a riad is always a different and usually cheaper option. Riads are old palace-houses of traditional architecture, restored and converted into hotels with 5 or 6 rooms, distributed over a few floors and around an open-air garden or inner courtyard. They usually have an adapted terrace on their roof, where you can enjoy a good meal or breakfast with a view of the city and witness a sunrise or sunset too.
Bear in mind that there are riads for all budgets, so their price will vary according to the services they offer. Many of them have a swimming pool, sauna, lounges and other services in case you are looking for more comfort. Staying in a Riad with traditional surroundings and courtyard i s a unique Moroccan experience and a welcome oasis within the busy streets. * Check rates and availability for all accommodation in Morocco
View of the Atlas Mountains at breakfast
Widiane Suites & Spa Resort
The Widiane Suites & Spa Resort in the Atlas Mountains is the place for some well-deserved pampering and relaxation. The resort is three hours from Marrakech and as you meander around dusty roads, you catch your first glimpse of a stunning turquoise lake that lays at the foot of the hotel. Pamper yourself in the Thai spa, before taking a dip in the infinity pools, or relax with a cocktail in the Royal purple Karma lounge, adorned with Buddhas big and small.
You can hike in the Atlas mountains, take a leisurely boat ride across the lake. The hotel even gives you a chance to test your culinary skills with a traditional Moroccan dish. It's a beautiful Moroccan style resort in a stunning location.

There is a good bus network in Morocco but depending on the destination that you’re travelling to, you may be travelling through mountain passes so expect a few windy (curves) turns.
The bus stations can be quite hectic as there are usually several bus operators travelling to the same destination. As you enter the bus station just look for the name of where you are travelling to on the desks, then go to that desk and check the times of departure. If the first desk doesn’t have a convenient time, there may be another desk that does so look around. You usually buy your ticket at the desk then hand it to the bus driver. You can buy a ticket to come back from the other destination if you’re not sure when you’re heading back. You may have to pay extra for your luggage too.
If you prefer more comfort than one of the cheap local buses with broken seats and no air con, look for the companies: CTM, or Supratours. Supratours have fewer seats and more legroom and even soundproofing! Check their timetables here. CTM are just as good and they even have their own app. Make sure you pack a cardigan in case the air con is too cold. This is their direct website
The buses can take you all over the country, to Casablanca, Fes, Rabat and Tangier. The bus from Marrakech to Ouarzazate takes approximately 4.30 hours. But if you’re travelling on a budget and want to interact with the locals on an authentic bumpy bus journey, opt for the cheaper buses.
One trick that locals do to get a tip is to approach you as you enter the bus station then ask where you’re going so that they can get a tip for taking you to the correct desk. If you need this, then go for it, but you can probably find the desk by yourself.
If you don’t want to sit on a bus, there is a train network that will take you to the bigger cities. You can travel from Tangier down to Marrakech or from Oujda to Marrakech. You can also travel on a sleeper train in comfort class from Casablanca to Oujda or Nador, Marrakesh to Tangier, or Tangier to Oujda. You’ll receive a welcome kit of water and toiletries when you book your single compartment. Check timetable for trains here
If you are short on time, Royal Air Maroc offer domestic flights but as there hub is Casablanca, you generally have to change planes here for each flight so it can be easier and more scenic to take a train or bus.
If you take a taxi in Morocco expect the driver to pull over and pick someone else up. There are different taxis depending on where you are going to. A ‘petite taxi’ for example can’t take you outside of the city, but a ‘grand’ taxi can, as well as taking you between cities. The difference is the size. Make sure you ask the fare before you get in or ask if they can turn the meter on.
Renting a car is only for the confident drivers or if you are spending time in the south of the country where buses aren’t that regular. Lack of indicating and other drivers overtaking and taking risks means that there are accidents so just be extra vigilant on the roads. If you don’t feel that confident driving, you can always hire a driver to take you around through a local car company. * Check prices for car rental in Morocco

10 Best Places in Morocco for Solo Travel
Morocco is one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations at the moment thanks to its combination of desert light and beautiful riads, full-on cultural experience, delicious food, and low prices. It can be a challenging destination though. So where are the best places in Morocco for solo travellers?
If you’re apprehensive about solo travel in Morocco here are some go-to destinations where you’ll find everything you need for a stress-free solo trip – including hostels, cheap rooms/dorms, good public transport, and a range of activities and tours suitable for solo travellers.
Morocco’s hostel scene is getting better year by year, although facilities are sometimes basic. Your budget will go far, so consider staying at a few budget riads and guesthouses.
The most popular destinations are the classic Imperial cities of Marrakech and Fes. The hostels here are full of solo travellers and backpackers, plus it’s easy (and cheap) to arrange day or multi-day trips through your accommodation. Both cities can be full on-though, so I recommend including the time to visit their chilled-out bohemian counterparts Essaouira (from Marrakech) and Chefchaouen (from Fes).
If you still feel daunted by the prospect of solo travel then consider taking a group tour. G Adventures and Intrepid are well-regarded and have a focus on responsible tourism. Travel Talk is a good budget option.
Morocco’s number 1 destination for most is the gorgeous Red City. And you’ll see why they call it that as soon as you arrive. The desert light combines with the red sandstone buildings to create one of the most photogenic places you’ll ever see. Highlights include the UNESCO-listed historic medina and the Djemma el Fna market square at its heart, several crumbling majestic palaces, and the distinctive colours of the Jardin Majorelle.
Marrakech gets a lot of tourists and as such also has its fair share of scammers and hassles. It can be overwhelming, particularly for solo females travellers. Consider hiring a guide to take some of the hassles out.
Marrakech is home to many of Morocco’s best places to stay, from luxury hotels to boutique riads and flashpacker hostels. Marrakesh Equity Point is one of the latter – a riad converted into a spacious hostel (pictured below). It’s one of my favourite hostels that I’ve stayed in, and you’ll be thankful for its cooling courtyards, swimming pool and rooftop bar after a hot day spent exploring the medina. The hostel can arrange tours and activities for you, including the popular 3 day trip to the Sahara, cooking classes, hammams and waterfalls. Female-only dorms are available.
If it all gets too much for you in Marrakech then it’s just a 2-hour bus ride to Essaouira – the Windy City. Known for its Atlantic coast location and chilled out hippie vibes, Essaouira offers a relaxing alternative to the craziness of Marrakech. The city’s historic ramparts were used as a filming location for Game of Thrones (Astapor, home of the Unsullied). Essaouira has a strong musical identity – every year in June it hosts the Gnaoua World Music Festival (known as the African Woodstock), and during its 1960s hippe heydey it hosted Hendrix and the Beatles. It also has a UNESCO World Heritage listed medina, a burgeoning surf scene and a very photogenic fleet of bright blue fishing boats.
Essaouira has a good range of hostels these days, some of them with a surf focus. It’s a toss-up between The Atlantic for its sociable roof terrace, Moga for whitewashed relaxing interiors, and The Chill Art for zany decor and a family atmosphere. If you’d like to splash out on a private room then Riad Lunetoile is good value.
For something a bit different take a trip out of town to L’Ane Vert , an eco-lodge in the remote countryside, with animals and an art and a beachside location. Perfect for getting away from it all.
Taghazout is Morocco’s surf capital, with a large number of surf schools and camps based in the area. but it’s also good bet if you just want to mellow out and enjoy the sea breeze, meet fellow travellers and eat healthy and delicious food (don’t miss the nearby Banana Village!).
Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of cheap surf lodges and lovely places to stay – and most places run day trips to the stunning Paradise Valley at some point during the week. Pick of the bunch is Amayour Surf ,a 5-star hostel offering surf and yoga packages, and Salt Surf with its comfy beds and calm white interior.
If you’re happy to splash out on special accommodation, local school Surf Maroc have opened Amouage – a boutique hotel with an infinity pool, rooftop yoga garden, wet room and spa. Room shares are available for solo travellers (I wish more places would do this). For a smaller budget, Surf Maroc also run the Auberge guesthouse with lovely white and blue decor.
Of Morocco’s 4 imperial cities, Fez is the one that most makes you feel like a time traveller. Getting lost in the extensive medina – one of Morocco’s top heritage sites and the largest in the world – is one of Morocco’s most exhilarating experiences. Amongst the alleyways, you will discover hidden gardens and hammams, smelly leather tanneries, souks, and beautiful mosques and madrasas.
There are lots of riad hostels and guesthouses with beautiful tiled courtyards – try Hostel Dar Jannat and Dar Elinor for dorms, and Dar Kenza for rooms.
CHEFCHAOUEN
Instagrammers’ favourite Chefchaouen – the blue town – is located up in the Rif Mountains. Once a hidden hippie hotspot, its popularity on social media has helped to propel it into the mainstream. But this pretty little town is still sleepy, friendly and cheap. It can be done as a day trip from Fes, but I recommend to hang out and decompress for a few days or spend some time hiking in the Rif.
Stay at Riad Hostel Baraka which is friendly, clean and comfortable and has a great breakfast.
Forget all notions of Bogart, Casablanca is Morocco’s most modern metropolis. It was modelled on Marseilles and you could easily mistake it for a European city. Casablanca’s most famous landmark is the Hassan II mosque (pictured above) and it does have a historic (if small) medina as well as art deco architecture. But it’s mainly mecca for shopping, restaurants, culture and design. Plus you can surf at its beaches, and eat at the legendary Rick’s Cafe, of course.
If you’ve only got a short time in Morocco then you can leave it out of your itinerary without missing anything, but for longer trips in the country it’s sleek cosmopolitan delights make a welcome change of pace from Morocco’s more traditional (and conservative) settlements.
The LHostel a Casablanca has comfy dorms and a shady garden for BBQs.
If you’re coming to Morocco via the ferry from Spain then Tangier is likely to be your first taste of the country. This port city has a famous name which conjures up all sorts of images. It was once an international zone with famously liberal laws (or lack of). For decades it attracted beatniks, artists, and all sorts of alternative types etc. It soon developed a reputation for being seedy and scruffy.
Tangier has been tarted up recently though, with the medina and main sights given a facelift and boutique treasures hidden amongst the alleys. Fair to say it’s undergoing something of a cultural renaissance. Tuck a copy of The Sheltering Sky under your arm and drop in at some of its famous cafes. There are also a few decent windswept beaches nearby and the arthouse Cinema Rif.
The arty vibes live on at The Melting Pot Rooftop Hostel , which lives up to its name and hosts social dinners every evening.
For an alternative to Tangier, consider Tetouan which is 1 hour along the north coast. Much smaller and less frantic, it’s still an under the radar destination and a great introduction to the real Morocco. Tetouan is on the Mediterranean coast and you can still feel the Spanish influence in the architecture here, in the UNESCO-listed whitewashed medina and green-shuttered buildings that spread out over the hills. The setting is very scenic, wedged between the sea and the lush Rif Mountains. And there are some great beaches in the area – Martil and Marinasmir are popular with locals.
For accommodation, Dari Hostel is in a historic building and has cosy rooms that make it feel you’re staying at someone’s house. And has a lovely rooftop terrace with epic views over the city.
If you’re a hiking fan then you’ll almost certainly want to head to Imlil. It’s the main starting point for ascents of Mount Toubkal – the highest mountain in North Africa – and a a number of guesthouses and cafes have sprouted up to cater for the hikers. You don’t have to be a hiker to enjoy Imlil though – it’s a pleasant enough place to enjoy the fresh mountain air, tranquillity, and traditional Berber villages. The winter months bring snow-capped peaks. There are some easy short hikes you can take to valleys and waterfalls if you don’t fancy the slog up Toubkal.
Budget dorms and mountain views are available at Tamatert Guesthouse . It’s worth noting that there’s no public transport to Imlil, you’ll have to take a taxi or grand (shared) taxi. It’s also possible to visit on a tour from Marrakech.
Known as ‘the Gateway to the Sahara’, Ouarzazate might just be about to hit the spotlight thanks to new budget flight routes that will take you from Spain to this outpost at the edge of the desert.
Ouarzazate is famous for being Morocco’s top filming location. It’s not far to Aït Ben Haddou (pictured above), the most famous kasbah in the Valley of the Kasbahs. You might recognise it from star turns in The Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones.
The town also has a fascinating Kasbah of its own. It can sometimes feel like a bit of a ghost town but is worth a longer stay than most desert tours allow. It has a relaxed feel and the standard of accommodation is generally quite good. Location-wise, it’s a useful base for the desert and exploring the area’s beautiful valleys and gorges. It’s also a lot of fun (if a bit bizarre) to visit the old film sets (CLA Studios is the best) with their lifesize chunks of polystyrene imitating Ancient Egyptian ruins.
Hostel fans can stay at Dar Widad – a friendly place with solid wooden bunks (always a fan of that), though there are some nice guesthouses around – particularly if you’re prepared to stay out of town.

A Solo Traveller’s Guide to Marrakech
Prepare to be bewitched – there’s nothing quite like the blend of curious chaos and cultural diversity that epitomises Marrakech , and with riads and tours aplenty it’s perfectly set up for an unforgettable solo trip.
You’ll never forget your first time in this ancient city on the edge of the Sahara, fringed by the snow-tipped Atlas Mountains. Explore the centuries-old plaster-pink ramparts of the Medina, haggle for a bargain in the souks, take in the drama of Djemaa El Fna square while quietly sipping a cup of sugary mint tea – whatever you do, Marrakech is a book of magic any solo traveller won’t want to put down. In this guide, we give you the lowdown on what to do, where to stay and what to eat on a solo trip to Marrakech.
What’s the vibe?
Marrakech charms you in the way an eccentric aunt can be your favourite, with so much personality packed into a city whose soundtrack is the call to prayer ringing out from stork-topped minarets. Explore noisy souks lined with North African spices and handmade leather babouches, and admire exquisite examples of Islamic architecture. Stay as long as you can in the Djemaa El Fna, a central square alive with a giddying mix of musicians, snake charmers and spiced street food you’ll keep coming back for.

Eat and drink in Marrakech
Restaurant, Moroccan
Within the sandstone walls of Riad Noir d’Ivoire, a lavish boutique hotel in the Medina, Oban’s modern-Moroccan menus will woo you with seasonal ingredients elevating dishes such as monkfish tagine or seafood pastilla. You can pair your meal with any one of the 3,000 bottles in the open-design wine cellar. Soft lighting creates an intimate space you’ll feel happy to dine in, alone or with a crowd.
5. Hotel Restaurant Café de France
Hotel Restaurant, Moroccan
One of the oldest and most famous cafes in Marrakech earns its bragging rights for the Djemaa El Fna location and rooftop terraces in view of the mountains. Locals mingle with tourists here for cups of mint tea on a street-side terrace. It’s also a local landmark for tour groups to meet before heading off on a cultural discovery.
Dreamy sunset cocktails and Mediterranean-inspired fusion created by an Ibizan chef keep travellers coming back to this design-forward spot – part cool lounge, part tropical-themed rooftop terrace in the heart of the Medina. If you’re here alone, it’s unlikely things will stay that way for long – what with the sumptuous sushi and cocktails such as Lavender Fizz.
What to do in Marrakech as a solo traveller
Hike the Atlas Mountains, stopping off at an ancient Berber village
Trade bustling souks and alleyways for soaring mountains and tiny villages on a day trip out of Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains. Led by a guide, you’ll discover the Berber community, explore ancient settlements, savour a slow-cooked tagine and – depending on what tour you choose – stay the night in a hilltop kasbah with panoramic dancing views of the rugged landscape.
A trip to the Atlas Mountains with an overnight stay in a local community is just one of many authentic activities you’ll experience on Culture Trip’s six-day Moroccan adventure , led by our Local Insider.
Soak up the natural beauty of Jardin Majorelle
A visit to this enchanting urban idyll should be near the top of the to-do list on any solo trip to Marrakech. Created in the 1920s by French painter Jacques Majorelle – before fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berge took over – the garden is filled with cooling marble pools and lily-pad-topped ponds, creating a serene spot to reflect or relax in the shade of a banana tree.
Haggle for spices and slippers in the Medina
Only those who’ve lived here all their lives can navigate this crowded, cobblestoned network of alleyways, home to donkeys, leather shops and stalls piled high with fragrant spices. That’s where our small-group tour comes in handy – helping you haggle for handicrafts, traditional leathers and henna tattoos, with stacks of insider knowledge.
Stay safe, stay happy
Marrakech is generally a safe and friendly place to visit, whether you’re travelling solo or not. However, as with any city of this size, you should take care to avoid isolated areas when exploring alone – such as the mountains outside of the city or along the Medina’s quiet streets and alleyways at night. This is where an insider-led trip can provide that extra comfort blanket to allow you to explore at night, unperturbed.
Getting around Marrakech as a solo traveller
Near constant crowds and a web of narrow interlaced streets and squares make central Marrakech very much a place for getting around on foot. The benefit is that you can stop to marvel at an intricately carved doorway here or haggle over a woven rug there. Some streets are so narrow that bikes, scooters and the odd donkey cart struggle to pass.
Outside the Medina however, you can hop into a “petit taxi” and usually agree on a price with the driver before you set off. Then there’s the horse-drawn carriage ride, ultimately the most sedate way to see the sights from Djemaa El Fna or the Koutoubia Mosque.
Want to experience Marrakech with other culturally curious travellers? Share your travel experience by joining Culture Trip’s six-day Moroccan adventure to discover the whirlwind of sights, sounds and smells that make Marrakech so unique.
KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?
Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world
Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

A mission created by a belgian woman, that aims to spread the passion and the most importantly, offer a high quality of surfing and bodywork in a private setting, here in the heart of Morocco.
What We Stand For
Authenticit, respect and connection are the main of Happy Salty Soul, together with the locals. We provide exceptional hospitality, with a warm, comfortable and peaceful environment for the guest and the local workers. We offer personalized service and promoting the local culture where everyone share their unique talents.
At Happy Salty Soul, we combine the activity of surfing with after surf therapy and other wellbeing tools to improve your self-development. We encourage our students to develop a deeper connection with the ocean, themselves, and others. As well as giving them technical, considered coaching so they progress as quickly as possible.
With our 8 days programme we aim to increase the sense of play (not just success) in the water and give a bit of an understanding of the happy salty soul surfing lifestyle.
how it all started?
A Belgian girl with an unwavering passion for the ocean found her heart captivated by Morocco's simple yet enchanting way of life. It all began in 2022 when she stumbled upon Taghazout, realizing instantly that this was where she belonged. In March 2023, a local friend introduced her to a house, jokingly claiming it was the perfect spot for her retreats. Little did they know, six months later, her dream transformed into reality.
Starting with an empty house brimming with potential, she infused it with Moroccan charm, creating a villa complete with rooftop terraces, a swimming pool, cozy double rooms, and a wellness area. Her vision was to craft a sanctuary for herself and kindred spirits, offering a haven to explore the magic of the ocean and the tranquility of the mountains nestled in the heart of Morocco.
In addition to providing a welcoming space, she offers personalized surf coaching and after-surf therapy for a maximum of four guests, ensuring a high-quality and intimate experience. Grateful for the opportunity to live and work in such a picturesque setting, she cherishes every moment spent meeting incredible people and, of course, indulging in the joy of surfing whenever possible.
why taghazout?
Taghazout, a picturesque and genuine surfers' village, boasts a welcoming community and offers consistent surf conditions throughout the year. Renowned as a world-famous surfing destination, it's an ideal spot for enthusiasts of water surface sports. The Atlantic winds sculpt impressive tubes, establishing Taghazout as a surfer's haven since the 1970s. With a diverse range of waves, it caters to surfers of all skill levels, making it a perfect destination for anyone looking to ride the waves.
Are you a passionate traveller of any age who is young at heart, loves adventure, wants to meet extraordinary people from all over the world, knows the value of such personal and intensive coaching and is open to constructive criticism and improving your surfing technique through us? We’ll awaken the Stoke in you and offer you a peaceful home away from home with first class coaching in different ways, that you can apply at any surf break in the world. Guests who are more into a fun surf and party camp will definitely have a hard time here.
