Generally accepted where other credit/debit cards are accepted. Only had a couple of occasions when it wasn’t able to be used, eg a theatre in New York - had to be a credit card to purchase tickets. Used in NY and in Norway so far and not had any problems to speak of. The biggest problem was initially trying to add funds in the US but the problem was with my phone roaming, not the card/app. Doesn’t allow for Norwegian Krone so we switched to Euros from US dollars as some shops in Norway accepted Euros. It’s easy to switch funds between currencies. Heading to Rome next and have loaded more Euros - fingers crossed it will be accepted with no problems. I wouldn’t recommend it as your only option but it’s definitely worth having as your main card.

Brilliant card to use abroad

Instead of using your own card abroad, you can use the Hays travel card you can see on the app how much money you’ve got, and you can also keep a check on the money being used, easier than trying to access your own bank abroad. So if you need to use the card abroad, use the travel card and once you are home, you can transfer the money back to your own account or I have used the card back home in the UK after transferring the money back to sterling, well recommended

Good until it goes wrong

Just used this on one trip so far. Whilst in the country I was visiting it was great to know that I wasn’t attracting exorbitant fees and it was all smooth. That was until I tried to top up my funds and it kept going wrong. I phoned the helpline and the only advice they had was to try from a computer browser. (Rather than in the app) I did and I still had no luck. The helpline suggested that I tried calling my own bank. I did that, I should also at this point declare that I work within the payment card industry. I was able to get my bank to trace exactly what was happening. We did see the attempted transaction. However Mastercard was not responding to the 3D secure challenge (a form of 2Factor verification) This left me having to use my normal debit card. I couldn’t top up my travel card. It sort of left me disappointed that the Hays side of things couldn’t give me answers and caused me to have bank charges that should’ve been avoided. Otherwise it would have been five stars. A bit of advice if you are considering this card. Check before travelling that you can top up from your source of funds.

Sorry to hear to hear you have experienced issue with the App, Mastercard have been carrying out intermittent maintenance which could have affected the App verification function. God calls Flushing native Luke Hays to Moscow to teach fifth-graders

When he was a senior at Flushing High School, Luke Hays knew God called him to be a teacher like his mentor and fifth-grade teacher, Gene Dumler. "I wanted to shine my light for Christ in public school," he said.He had no idea that his first classroom would be at a Christian school halfway around the world. Now in his third year at Hinkson Christian Academy in Moscow, he plans to dress up as Lincoln, put on a top hat and deliver the Gettysburg Address to his fifth grade class. Named for Bud Hinkson, a pioneer missionary, the school provides an English education for children of missionaries and diplomats. Most come from America and Korea, others from Australia, Great Britain, Peru, Hungary, Ireland and Russia. "One girl is half Russian and half Congolese," Hays said. "Her mom became a Christian when Billy Graham came here for a crusade. Her daughter is in my class and she is ablaze for Christ." Hays' adventure began in his junior year at Olivet Nazarene University. His pastor, the Rev. Glenn Gardner, heard about an opening for a fifth-grade teacher at the Moscow school and told Luke's parents, Dan and Debby Hays of Flushing. "I had never sensed that missions were my calling," Hays said. "but when I heard about teaching there, I felt an overwhelming peace of the Lord sweep through me. I prayed for confirmation and God made it very clear that he wanted me to come."

He filled out paperwork and applied for a passport. In December of his senior year, he received an e-mail saying he was accepted at Hinkson. In August 2006 he boarded a plane for Moscow. "It was a leap of faith," he said. "This was my first plane ride. I was like a kid in a candy store, taking pictures of everything on the flight." In Moscow, he experienced dark gray days, a long winter, and a sense of spiritual oppression. He battled homesickness, struggling with the culture, the language, and roommate problems. "It was really hard that first year but with the grace of God, I made it through and the next year was easier," he said. "I am falling more and more in love with the people and the culture. It's becoming part of my heart. I plan to do five years total if I can." The Russian government only allows 90 day visas to religious workers. He can skirt around this because he is here on a work visa issued by the Russian director of the school. This year's class is mature beyond their years, he said. "I have done learning activities I could not have done with other classes. Three or four already know God is calling them to missions." In social studies, he encourages the children to adopt a cause. They raised more than $1,000 the first year for Compassion International, a Christian child advocacy ministry. This year, they put out "loose change cups" to support International Justice Mission, a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.

Hays receives a stipend from the school, and support from the Nazarene denomination and his home church, Central Church of the Nazarene, Flint. He sings on the praise team at the First Church of the Nazarene of Moscow, takes part in Wednesday night prayer meetings and occasionally visits shut-ins. "I can actually read and sing (in Russian), although I don't always translate the words," he said. He and his roommate visit a local orphanage, and take the boys on day trips such as the Nazarene dacha, a home in the country owned by the church . He also meets with a small group of middle school boys. He will play Antonio in the school production of "Much Ado About Nothing" this year, another new adventure. "I've never been in a play, and I have to explode in anger, which is out of character for me." He and several friends organize the English Cafe, an opportunity for Russian college students to have discussions in English and relax with friends. "Often, we get to share the gospel," he said. "We have to be careful not to shove it down their throats. Russians are reluctant. We just let the Spirit lead in the table groups. We let them ask, 'What do you think?' Then we can say, 'Well, I am a Christian and I see it this way.' We now have 50 people coming. They leave very upbeat with smiles on their faces." On school vacations, he toured the Holy Land, Switzerland, France and Germany. He went to St. Petersburg twice. "The adventurous spirit God put into me is being used," he said. "In June, two friends and I plan to take the Trans-Siberian Railway across 11 time zones. We will fly to the far east side, north of China, and take the train all the way across in one day segments." People have lots of stereotypes, he said. They think all Russians wear beards, but most are clean shaven, and that it is freezing but he experienced worse winters in Michigan. After his fifth year, he plans to return to the United States and teach at a public school in a low income district. "It's been so wonderful to be here," he said. "I have a great sense of peace. It is exhausting work, but it is sweet. Moscow has become part of my heart. Now that I have been here, my heart is much more open to missionary life. I would not be surprised if God sent me back into missions."
