The accommodation is supposed to be 5 star and it was in most places. The good thing about the hotels is that they all had an iron and places to hang washing which does make a difference when you are trying to travel light. Only the hotel in Xian- Days Suites and Hotel had staff that had difficulty speaking English and did not seem particularly interested in their guests.

There were only 3 people in our tour group myself, my Mother and another middle aged man that we had not met before.

We were met at each airport by our guide for that particular city as Helen Wong contracts out to different agencies in each city. In this way I think that it is a bit of hit and miss as your tour depends on the guide that you receive in each place.

The itinerary was pretty good but you did not know the exact details until you arrived and met each guide. I can provide more details if people are interested. Obviously the terracotta warriors and the great wall were amazing. I think it is worthwhile having a bit of knowledge about where you are going so that you can make the most of each experience. For example my mother is in her 70's but fit and i wanted her to experience standing on the great wall. Originally they were going to take us to one place where you had to walk up to the wall which was a lot of steps. Also it was very hot. Instead i asked them to take us to a part where there is also a gondola to take you to the top. What a great and amazing experience that was for her. if not for my request she would have missed out on a major highlight of the trip.

The yangtze boat trip was certainly another highlight. As a Helen Wong guest you are given the use of an executive floor where you eat and hang out. You also get free wifi up there. The cabins are mixed in with all the other guests and the rooms are VERY small- think cupboard. The evening meals were a selection of fixed choices and you pre-ordered your dinner when you had breakfast. They were tasty and well presented. Also all beer, wine and soft drinks were included with dinner. If you were not with Helen Wong then you had to fight your way to dinner in the big dining room 2 decks down. i think it would have been quite stressful- we met some Wendy Wu tour groups who said that it was difficult to get food at the buffet on that deck.

I think that the most disappointing part of the tour was the food. They really need to change the way the food is organised. Buffet breakfast was fine at each hotel except Xian which was pretty average.

When lunch and dinner were included the guide would ask "Is there anything you don't eat?" Then when you arrived at the restaurant a set choice of dishes would arrive. We were given sweet and sour pork at nearly every meal which is something i don't eat in Australia and is just tourist food. The dishes were touristy and consisted of a lot of plates of steam vegetables. When we asked to look at a menu so that we could choose some dishes that we liked we were politely fobbed off. In Shanghai the serves were so small that we were all starving after each meal and tried to tell the guide who pretty much ignored us. We are not obsessed with food but when you pay for a 5 star trip you expect the food to be of a good quality. I have traveled widely in China and decided to take my Mum on this more sedate and luxurious trip so she could experience some of the wonderful sights and atmosphere of China. I know how much food costs in China and some of the meals were very cheap. One meal in Beijing was so terrible i complained to Helen Wong tours, we could not even eat the food. I was stunned at to why they would choose such a terrible place when there are so many wonderful restaurants to choose from.

Overall I would recommend the tour but I think you do need to do a bit of reading before you go so that you can make the most of your free time.

Also just to note that the pollution was very bad when we were there particularly in Beijing.

I have travelled extensively with Helen Wongs

The itinerary is given in detail in all the brochures, you have but to read it

The food is a problem in China and unless you are prepared to go your own way you will receive precisely what every tourist group does....mediocre food

I think you should direct your complaint directly to the source in Sydney as they are most professional and accommodating, not merely post it on line. FYI the Great Wall has five entrances but it is generally the same position due to the distances involved. To travel further would require much more time and is something you should consider if you return

"...FYI the Great Wall has five entrances..." - not really.

"...The food is a problem in China...", not a problem in China, just a problem on tours as this is how they save money. Food in China is good and cheap.

Helen Wong

ASIA holiday specialist Helen Wong's Tours has released an affordable 12-day Highlights of Vietnam group tour specially created for budget conscious travellers.

Priced from $2400 per person, twin share, the tour includes return Vietnam Airlines fares from Sydney or Melbourne, and focuses on visits to capital Hanoi, breathtakingly beautiful Halong Bay, former capital Hue and UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hoi An.

Cosmopolitan Danang and bustling Ho Chi Minh City, famous for the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels, are also toured in an air-conditioned coach along with the fascinating Mekong Delta with its stilted homes and seafood farms.

To grab a closer view along the canals in the delta region, travellers will board a sampan for the sightseeing experience.

Nine nights in four-star hotel accommodation (with daily breakfast) are included in the price along with a night aboard a traditional Vietnam junk “Calypso” and most lunches.

“The creation of this tour came about after requests from consumers for a comprehensive itinerary at an affordable price with more flexibility to dine in restaurants of their choice on their own each evening,” said Helen Wong, managing director and founder of Helen Wong's Tours (31 years ago).

“To book such a holiday costs less than $5000 a couple, including the return air fares, all ground transport, accommodation, daily breakfasts, most lunches and the services of an English-speaking guide,” she said.

Consumers can book directly by going online to www.helenwongstours.com or by contacting your nearest travel agent.

I am planning a tour to China and would like to reopen the Helen Wong topic to hear if there are any recent updates on her tours and how they may compare with other tour operators

Tripadvisor staff removed this post either because the author requested it, or because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum guidelines.

Search for Helen Wong. Your question is asked every month or so. Not many replies usually.

helen wong tours canada

I too am looking at a tour with Helen Wong next year. Did you go?? I would love to know how you went?

Unfortunately I had to postpone but still looking at going April/May 2011. Maybe someone will post something before then.

We are looking at August so please let me know!!! I have had 3 answers from different forums that tell me DO NOT CHOOSE WENDY WU OVER HELEN WONG. The food is awful and hotels shabby. I definately will book Helen Wong but pretty please let me know how you go!!!!

' class=

We'd suggest you do your research in a little more in depth and you will find these "3 answers (which mention Helen Wong?) " have been countered multiple times by our passengers who have nothing but good things to say about our tours. We would hate you to make a decison based on very limited information.

We use 3-4 star level of accomodation and are fully inclusive and very rarely cancel a departure unlike other operators. We kow this because those passengers end up booking on WWT anyway after their tour is cancelled. Our style of travel is mainstream and does not suit every type of traveller, but it is very popular. Restaurants used are the same style between both companies. Helen Wong, which was once the No 1 one to China about 5 years ago in Australia, uses 5 star hotel accommodation and is not fully inclusive in its style of touring - more of a higher end style which appeals to a smaller market. There is a reason there is no feedback on Trip Advisor about Helen Wong Tours. It really depends on your style of travel and whether you want to pay for 5 star accommodation which you only have time to sleep in and not have the time to enjoy fully.

We suggest contacting your local travel agents as well to get some advice and visit our website and view the reviews posted by our travellers so you can make a truely infomed decision and not one based on 3 poor - out of how many other good posts on Trip Advisor.

Most of our tours in August are already filling up well and April departures have only limited spaces available on selected tours while others have already sold out.

Please call 1300 727 998 and talk to one of our many reservations consultants, all of whom have been on our tours if you wish to clarify anything.

I've been noticing a pattern, not only in this thread but also other thread. if a first time poster post a negative report, another first time poster would almost immediately post a positive one.

I'm also interested in any feedback anyone has to offer on Helen Wong tours.

Yes, I too would like to hear someone comment on Helen Wong touring.

My husband and I did the China Discovery tour with Helen Wong. There were a total of 5 people on the tour and it was brilliant. Everything was organised so well. The guides were excellent and the hotels were luxurious. We will be travelling with Helen Wong again. My only criticism is that the guides take you to too many shops, manufacturers etc. I would certainly recommend the tours. We had a brilliant tour and it went like clockwork.

Helen Wong Elevates Nagano: A New Aussie-Japan Travel Era

Helen Wong Elevates Nagano: A New Aussie-Japan Travel Era

Wong’s appointment is not just a job change; it’s a historic milestone. The Nagano Tourism Organization, in a strategic pivot, aims to amplify its presence in the Australian market. Australia lauded as a top English-speaking visitor source for Nagano, has shown impressive engagement, with recent statistics revealing it as the third-largest contributor to tourism in the region. This initiative is a testament to the deepening ties between Australia and Japan, spurred by mutual appreciation and curiosity.

The significance of this role extends beyond mere representation; it’s about storytelling, sharing the essence of Nagano’s “naturally gifted” landscapes, and unveiling the myriad experiences awaiting Australian travellers. From the spellbinding allure of the Jigokudani Monkey Park, where snow monkeys revel in hot springs, to the majestic ski fields, national parks, and historic temples, Nagano is a tapestry of natural and cultural marvels.

HELEN WONG – New Nagano Australian representative – 2024

Wong’s inaugural task is a themed webinar scheduled for February 27 , promising a 30-minute journey through Nagano’s highlights. This digital rendezvous is not just an information session; it’s an invitation to discover a world where tradition meets natural beauty. It signifies the Nagano Tourism Organization’s forward-thinking approach, leveraging digital platforms to connect and inspire potential visitors.

Helen Wong’s illustrious career, spanning over 45 years in the tourism industry, is a saga of pioneering achievements. Having represented the Macao Government Tourism Office and the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Commission, her expertise and passion for travel are unparalleled. Wong’s personal venture into events and travel further underscores her commitment to enriching the travel experience for all.

Nagano crowned as the Rooftop of Japan, is a region where nature’s grandeur is on full display. It’s a land that hosted the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in 1998, a testament to its global appeal and versatile allure. The region’s scenic beauty, enriched by historic temples, vibrant festivals, and many outdoor activities, makes it a year-round destination for explorers and culture enthusiasts.

Wong’s enthusiasm for her new role is palpable. “It’s an honour to be representing this breathtaking, naturally gifted corner of Japan,” she remarked. Her vision goes beyond promoting the already popular attractions. Wong is on a quest to unveil the depth and breadth of Nagano’s offerings, aiming to attract new visitors while enriching the travel experiences of returning guests.

This collaboration between Helen Wong and the Nagano Tourism Organization is more than a partnership; it’s a bridge between cultures, a conduit for shared experiences, and a beacon for sustainable tourism. As Wong embarks on this journey, her role is not just about marketing a destination but about crafting stories, experiences, and memories that resonate across continents.

The Nagano Tourism Organization invites all to explore the enchanting world of Nagano through their website and to reach out to Helen Wong for insights into this majestic region. As Wong steps into this role, the promise of Nagano’s allure beckons travellers to embark on journeys that transcend boundaries, offering a glimpse into the heart of Japan’s natural and cultural splendour.
