Honeymooning in Israel - Where Romance and Adventure Make for the Perfect ‘Marriage’

We all know that planning a wedding takes effort which is understandable since for many people it’s the most important day of their life. But what about what comes afterwards? How do you want to begin your married life and what factors do you take into consideration when it comes to planning the first trip you’ll take together? Choosing a destination that ticks the right boxes is incredibly important because this isn’t just a holiday, it’s your honeymoon!

Where Modernity and History Come Together

We might be a bit biased, but we think Israel is the place of honeymoon dreams. It’s a modern, developed country with every amenity you could wish for, combined with oodles of history and culture. It’s small enough to travel around easily but incredibly diverse in terms of landscapes and climates. There’s extraordinary nature, astonishing archaeological sites , history at your fingertips and miles and miles of pristine white sandy beaches and aquamarine Mediterranean waters to enjoy. Yes, whether you’re a sun worshipper, a culture buff, an avid nature lover or a city slicker, Israel has it all.  With four climate zones, you can ski in the Golan Heights in the morning and dive in the Red Sea at night...or hike in a crater at sunrise and be overlooking a Crusader castle by sunset. With its blue flag beaches, hip hotels, fabulous cuisine and breathtaking scenery, Israel is one of the best honeymoon destinations, and here are a few of the ideas we have in mind, to help convince you...

1. All Coupled Up

There’s nothing more appealing for many Israelis than the prospect of heading off to a ‘zimmer’ for a romantic weekend in one of the country‘s most beautiful areas - the Galilee - and for honeymooners, we think this is a perfect idea. The word Zimmer comes from the German ‘room’ but this unique accommodation goes way beyond that. Zimmers are self-contained units that often take the form of cabins and are rustic yet luxurious, with hot tubs, stylish furnishings and extravagant breakfasts. Pastoral and private, there’s no better place to begin your married life than in these rural retreats, with no one but you and your beloved - oh, and the birds, of course!

2. Urban Living

For city lovers who yearn for an ‘urban’ holiday, then Tel Aviv fits the bill nicely.  With its hip boutique hotels, stylish fine dining scene combined with the romantic backstreets of  Jaffa and the smart boutiques of the Neve Tzedek neighbourhood, it’s a great choice for a honeymoon in Israel. The city has all kinds of stylish hotels, many with rooftops that offer stunning views of the skyline and bars where you can enjoy a coffee by day and an aperitif before dinner. By day, stroll the Rothschild Boulevard  and tiny streets, soak up the atmosphere; by night, lounge at a cocktail bar, before eating al fresco at some modern Mediterranean spot then dance until the wee hours at one of the city’s hottest clubs.

3. Sunrises and Sunsets

Holding hands and watching the sunrise over Masada , in the magnificent Judean desert has got to rank as a seriously romantic activity. On any Israel tour , a trip to the ancient fortress of Masada is a must, but climbing it early in the morning really is a wonderful idea. Sitting atop the ruins, as the sun hits your face, before taking a cable car back to the bottom and heading off to the Dead Sea for a float in the world’s lowest body of water adds a touch of fun to the activity too. Slather yourself in mud, or even take a spa treatment at one of the hotels on the promenade. You can also combine all three, by taking an organised Masada Sunrise and Dead Sea Tour , which includes time at Ein Gedi - hiking, animal spotting and a refreshing dip in David’s Waterfall. Similarly, why not enjoy a sunset in the beautiful north of the country, in the Golans (nature, history and a foodie’s delight), or on a boat trip around the Sea of Galilee ? Or atop an abandoned fortification at Mount Bental , on a private tour of the Golan Heights ? This part of the country is renowned for its spectacular landscapes and beautiful wildlife (eagles, deer and jackals). You can climb the Nimrod Fortress (the largest Crusader-era castle in Israel) or take a detour to the Hamat Gader  hot springs. The area is a paradise for foodies too, with its locally sourced cheeses and olive oils as well as several chocolatiers providing sweet treats for locals and visitors!  Wine lovers are advised to visit one of the boutique wineries and indulge in some tastings.  All of these private tours are custom-made too, so it’s entirely up to you where you travel...

4. Out of the Comfort Zone

If you’re in Israel to relax but want a few activities thrown in, save for the classical day tours or private excursions , why not step out of your comfort zone and try something you’ve never tried before? Head south to the Negev desert, to stargaze and look for meteors at the amazing Mitzpe Ramon crater, before experiencing some local hospitality in the form of a night in a Bedouin tent.  Or take a hike around Timna national park before heading to Eilat for some diving or snorkelling in the Red Sea . There’s also plenty of hiking in the Negev desert, and a trip to the spectacular Ein Avdat canyon, near Kibbutz Sde Boker (home to Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion and his burial place ) is well worth it. 5. A Little Bit of Luxury

Everyone loves pampering and what better time for it than on an Israel honeymoon? The country has some incredibly luxurious hotels, and we’d recommend indulging in at least one or two nights in them!  Jerusalem boasts the Waldorf Astoria, the pinnacle of style with its eclectic and elegant architecture and furnishings. Try their afternoon tea - it’s to die for. Or head to King David, with its stunning views over the Old City and palatial limestone walls.  In Tel Aviv, we’d recommend the Norman - luxurious bedrooms, fine dining and the famous ‘Library Bar’ - perfect for an evening aperitif. We’d also be remiss if we didn’t mention ‘the Jaffa’ too - a modern luxury set in 19th-century grandeur. With its minimalist style, sumptuous bedrooms, lavish bathrooms and all kinds of luxury amenities, this is - by and standards - a ‘lifestyle’ hotel, and perfect for newlyweds.

6. Roots Schmoots

If you are Jewish, it might be a dream of yours to hold your wedding in Israel but if that’s not possible, then come here afterwards - as part of the Honeymoon Israel . This unique project offers young couples, just married or in the early years of their union, a nine-day subsidized honeymoon in Israel program. The idea is to give them an immersive travel experience and - whatever their personal backgrounds - make them feel at home both in the country and in the Jewish community. The trip around the country involves outings to the top tourist spots in the country as well as unusual experiences i.e. eating dinner with locals that you wouldn't get on a classical Israel tour package .  There will also be time to explore alone, with your partner and, of course, at the end of the nine days you are free to stay on longer if you want to see more of the country.

7. Adrenaline Rush

If you’re a couple that craves excitement, then an Israeli honeymoon won’t disappoint. With miles and miles of coastline and rivers too, there are all kinds of water sports - sailing, surfing, kayaking on the Jordan river and jeep safari tours through rugged desert terrain.  Explore the tunnels on a tour of the City of David and Underground Jerusalem , or head off to Acre , another Crusader City, with its stone walls and winding streets.  

For the truly adventurous, explore some of the country’s caves - Sorek (the Stalactite Cave ) in the Judean Mountains has wooden walkways which make it easy to explore. Malcham, close to the Dead Sea, has huge spaces and vertical shafts over 400 feet deep! Or what about the Maresha Caves in Beit Guvrin National Park ,  in which you can find cisterns, olive presses and burial caves of the Phoenicians.

8. Small Pleasures

Take pleasure in the small things!  If you’re in Tel Aviv, eat ice cream on a hot day (the city has some fabulous artisan gelaterias) take a stroll on the beach promenade (‘Tayelet’), hunt for vintage items in Jaffa’s flea market then have lunch at Jaffa port , watching fisherman pull in their catch. Hire a bike and explore the city by cycling the boulevards or head to Yarkon Park and rent a paddleboat, which you can take all the way down to Luna Park (what’s more romantic than a ride on a Ferris wheel at night?).  Also, consider a Jerusalem tour package - have a guide walk you through the Old City, from one ancient spot to the next, soaking up an atmosphere that’s 2,000 years old. Jerusalem might not have beaches and 24/7 activity, but it has a charm all of its own.

9. Getting Lost

For those who like to live on the wild side, head to the central railway station of the city you’re staying in, buy a ticket to a place with the most exotic or unusual sounding name you can find and take a day trip there. Wander the streets, grab some street food and get lost. Just remember not to miss the last train home!  Here are a few of our recommendations, on the ‘unusual’ front: Ein Hod - a charming artist’s village on the foot of a hill in the Carmel , between the mountain and the sea!  It doesn’t just offer accommodation either - there are workshops for those with a creative inner spirit! Ein Kerem - this tranquil village in the west of Jerusalem will delight every honeymooner - full of history, its lush vegetation is downright gorgeous (and if you’re there in February, look out for the almond blossom).  Caesarea - famous for its Herodian architecture, the city also boasts the Ralli modern art museum - filled with Spanish and Latin American art, its Moorish courtyard is the perfect place for honeymooners to sit and swoon over each other. Safed  - magical and holy, wander through the ancient streets and let yourself be enveloped by its mysterious and intoxicating atmosphere.  Don’t forget to visit the Artist’s Quarter while you’re there.

10. Do as the Locals Do

This one sounds rather odd, but why not just ask a local? Israelis are notoriously friendly and apart from loving to help, they love to give advice! They also have opinions on everything - particularly the best places to see in what they consider to be the greatest country in the world. They won’t name the tourist spots either - they’ll tell you about the places they grew up in, went to as teenagers, or travelled en route to their army base!  Places like the underground water cisterns in Ramle, the Druze village of Daliat-el-Carmel , and the Latrun monastery. They are all hidden tourist gems and most visitors to Israel never make it to them.  To sum up, then, we think that you’ll love taking a honeymoon in Israel. The adventures the two of you will have in this exciting, beautiful and unusual country are ones you are guaranteed to love and the memories you’ll make we think will stay with you for years to come. At Honeymoon Israel (HMI), we use a highly subsidized group trip to Israel as a catalyst for building a lifelong Jewish community at home. Participants spend ten exhilarating days in Israel sharing fun, meaningful experiences with couples from their city. Then, the journey continues at home as we learn, grow, and explore together. HMI is so much more than a trip to Israel.

The Application

The HMI Experience is open to couples of all cultural, racial, religious, gender, and sexual identities who are looking to create connections with each other and to Jewish life. HMI is geared toward couples with at least one Jewish partner, between the ages of 25 and 40, and who are within the first five years of marriage or early in their lifelong committed partnership.  We build cohorts for our group trips that are reflective of the diverse demographics of the particular community, including couples with interfaith, Jewish, and multi-racial backgrounds. HMI is most powerful and impactful for couples who have yet to find a strong connection to Jewish community or Jewish life and are searching for the right ways to incorporate Judaism into their relationship, family, and home.

Before the trip itself, we’ll host gatherings where you’ll get the chance to meet the couples you’ll be traveling with and get to know each other. 

On the trip, you’ll experience Israel’s culture, beauty, and society in a way you could never do on your own. You’ll hit the best tourist spots like the Western Wall, Jerusalem’s Old City, and the beaches of Tel Aviv, as well as having unique experiences you wouldn’t get on a standard vacation like meals with local families and meetings with high-level public officials and business leaders. You’ll have group tours, choose content-specific tracks that let you customize your experience, and have time to explore alone with your partner. 

HMI creates opportunities for connection with yourself, your partner, your community, and Israel. We’ll open the door to an exploration of what Judaism means to you. Throughout the trip, you’ll engage in what we call “HMI Conversations” that are designed to bring you closer to your partner and build bonds with your fellow participants. 

In addition to enjoying Israel’s traditional tourist destinations, delicious food and wine, and vibrant art and nightlife, you’ll meet Israelis from a wide range of religious and cultural backgrounds (religious and secular Jews, Arabs, Druze, and others) to gain a full picture of Israeli society. You’ll also visit historic sites and learn about their ties to Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and beyond.

We know vacation time can be hard to come by, so HMI ensures you can make the most of your visit and your time with your partner. Israel is a vibrant, exciting place. It’s a hub for technology, global politics, world religion, culture, and so much more. Not only is Israel a beautiful Mediterranean destination, but it’s also a powerful place to think about questions of religion and identity. 

We can all but guarantee you’ll return home with more questions than you came with and develop a stronger shared sense of your relationship with each other and with Judaism. You’ll gain a new perspective on your identity and what it means to you as a couple. You’ll have an opportunity for shared experiences and meaningful conversations about Jewish values and traditions and how they might fit into your family. 

Building and creating community is why HMI exists. In addition to traveling with couples from your city, each trip has a staff leader and a rabbi/Jewish educator from your city who will serve as your group facilitators in Israel and at home. Throughout your time on the ground in Israel, an Israeli Tour Educator will be with you every step of the way to answer questions and share knowledge. 

On your HMI trip, you’ll have the chance to explore personal connections to the Jewish community and figure out how to build personal, meaningful family traditions. While in Israel, you’ll see first-hand how individuals, families, and society can integrate diverse cultural and spiritual identities. Every trip also includes two unique Shabbat (sabbath) experiences: a traditional Shabbat in Jerusalem and a modern, secular Shabbat in Tel Aviv.

In every HMI city, we work closely with local partners who are integral to the entire HMI Experience. Our local partners are senior educators and community organizations who share HMI’s vision and values. 

Your safety, health, and security are our top priorities. We ensure that all groups are following the most updated safety and security guidelines in Israel. We work with experienced, accredited, professional tour guides and trip operators who have access to the most up-to-date security information, and our trip itineraries are reviewed continually to ensure you have the best experience possible.

Your staff leaders will go over safety and security protocols during one of your pre-trip gatherings and will be available before and during the trip to address any questions or concerns.

Beyond The Trip

After the Israel trip, the journey continues at home. The cohesive community we built on the ground in Israel is sustained and nurtured, formally through HMI-organized efforts and informally by grassroots efforts from the participants themselves.

HMI is so much more than a trip to Israel. Couples tend to participate in this experience for all the same reasons: to find friends, build community, and connect with Judaism in a new way. HMI provides opportunities for organized local programming, financial grants to help participants create and bring their own programming to life, and ongoing support to help sustain connections to Jewish life. Our team and local partners understand the unique needs of each city and work directly with participants to co-create Jewish experiences that fit their needs. 

What kind of things happen with HMI at home? Get excited for city-wide Shabbat dinners, alumni-led yoga sessions, group baby celebrations, family-friendly camp weekends, High Holy Day festivities, and so much more.

What comes to your mind when you think of Israel? I think of the most happening beaches, the mysterious ruins, the rolling hills of Samaria, Dead Sea, and the Babylonian hotels. Anyone who has ever thought of celebrating their honeymoon in Israel , they must know what’s this tiny country all about. For a country that’s barely the size of Kerala, Israel offers honeymoon experiences that are outright romantic and unforgettably awesome.

Israel is a country that embraces modern lifestyle while preserving its past; this unique mix of old and new makes this place incredible and has been inspiring tourists to explore it.

Before you learn more about celebrating your honeymoon in Israel, you should know a little about this little piece of heaven.

The little country is home to a variety of geographical features; it has wonderful mountain ranges of Judean , Carmel , and Galilee in the north; Negev desert in the south; and Dead Sea bordering it to the west. Israel lies in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and the deserts of Arabia, Southwest Asia, and Syria. The country is bordered by Jordan Valley rift to the East, the mountains of Lebanon to the North, Eilat to the south, and the Mediterranean to the West.

Anytime is a good time to travel to Israel, but you must take some basic weather precautions before venture out anywhere in Israel.

May-September (Summer season): Most of the tourists flock to Israel during summer, which is the best time to visit Israel. It doesn’t rain here during summer and you can do sightseeing without worrying about rain. Days are hot but you’ll be relieved by the balmy evenings.

April-May (Spring season): Spring season is short in Israel; it’s the second best time to visit the country. The weather during the spring season is highly unpredictable but absolutely romantic, as you might get caught in an occasional shower. It’s the time when almond trees are in full bloom painting every corner of Israel pink and the air smells so sweet as the red poppies bloom along the roads and empty spaces.

The most gorgeous beaches in Israel you can’t afford to miss

1. gordon beach, tel aviv – the most happening beach for your party mood.

If you want to live and understand Tel Aviv, this is the beach you should head to. Gordon Beach boasts of many volleyball courts, infinity pools, and lavish restaurants and hotels for a perfect beach day. At night, you can entertain yourself with dancing and drinking. Gordon is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in Israel with so much to offer to couples, and your Israel honeymoon isn’t complete without it.

2. Aqueduct Beach, Caesarea – A little piece of paradise for you

About 50 km north of Tel Aviv, lies a gorgeous and soothingly calm beach called Aqueduct Beach. Aqueduct Beach is amongst the most unique and romantic places in Israel you shouldn’t not miss. There’s a bridge-like conduit on the beach built by Romans some 2,000 years ago is also a photogenic site. The beach is untouched by commercialization,which makes it a perfect place for your long romantic strolls.

3. Herzliya Beach – Lose yourself in the beauty of Herzliya

Herzliya Beach is to the north of Tel Aviv. Although it’s one of the quietest beaches in Tel Aviv, it gets even more romantic, calmer, and secluded as you walk in the north direction. You can relax with your partner on the quieter side of the beach while enjoying the most beautiful sunset of your life.

4. Coral Reef Beach – Explore the underwater world together

You can spend a perfect day snorkeling and deep sea diving in the Coral Reef. The aquamarine water and and the rich colours of marine life makes this beach absolutely picturesque. One can clearly see colourful fishes swimming around the reef from the beach itself.

5. Dolphin Beach, Eilat – Colorful array of beautiful coral and tropical fish

The Dolphin Reef in Eilat is on the shores of the Red Sea offering a unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim alongside the most wonderful sea creatures like Dolphins. The reef is home to colorful fishes and beautiful corals. Newlyweds come from far and wide to dive with dolphins and experience the incredibly gorgeous marine life Israel.

6. Kalia Beach – Feel the romance in the Dead Sea air

This most northern Dead Sea beach is a magical destination that’ll revitalize your body, mind, and soul with its mineral-rich mud and water. Few things are as romantic and unique as floating in the waters of Dead Sea with your loved one. The beach also has an open cafe that lets your enjoy a 360 degree view over the Dead Sea, Jordanian desert, and Judean desert.

Must-visit places in Israel that’ll leave you mesmerized

1. mitzpe ramon – look at the stars, look how they shine for you.

You both of you find the idea of looking at the pitch dark sky dotted with twinkling stars romantic, then Mitzpe Ramon is your heaven. Mitzpe Ramon is among the most romantic places in Israel and you’ll agree after taking the ‘star tour’. There are fewer people in the valley, no traffic, less business, cool desert, and the most romantic evenings.

2. Wohl Rose Park, Jerusalem – Amidst the garden of colours

One of the most splendid and romantic places in Israel is Wohl Rose Park in Jerusalem. The garden covers about 19 acres and has about 400 varieties of roses and 15,000 plants. It’s the only rose park of its kind in the entire Middle East. The ancient quarries, round hills, a lovely waterfall and pond add the flavour of romance to the park. This is a beautiful place for your honeymoon pictures.

3. Tower Of David Museum – A spectacular night up there

The Tower of David Museum is situated on a hill offering 360 degrees mesmerizing views of Jerusalem city. The Night Spectacular—a unique sound and light show at the museum beautifully brings to life Jerusalem’s history. The show is the only one of its kind in the world, so make sure you attend it. You’ll surely enjoy the celebration of music, sounds, and cultures.

4. The Hanging Gardens of Haifa – The most gorgeous public garden

A dome that shines like gold in the sunlight, elegant marble walls, pillars made of granite, and manicured gardens cascading down a slope of Mt. Carmel make The Hanging Gardens of Haifa an incredibly spellbinding tourist attraction. The garden is located around the Shrine of the Báb.

5. The wishing bridge, Tel Aviv – Can make your wishes come true

Wishing Bridge is located in a gorgeous park overlooking the sea. The edges of the bridge are lined with Zodiac signs.  Legend has it that if you touch your own sign while making a wish gazing at the sea, your wish will come true. It’s your chance to wish for anything for your love, who knows, it might come true!

Honeymoon Israel

It’s about the journey.

Honeymoon Israel (HMI) is the opportunity of a lifetime to connect with Jewish community and Jewish life in whatever way works for you. In partnership with HMI, your Federation provides nine-day immersive trips to Israel for local cohorts of 20 couples. Each couple has at least one Jewish partner and is early in their committed relationship. The experience creates communities of couples who are building families with deep and meaningful connections to Jewish life and the Jewish people.  

Why travel with HMI and Federation?

Learn about the HMI experience through the eyes of a Federation staff member, Tori Schwartz, who traveled with the 2022 HMI group:

In July 2022, Rabbi Jay LeVine from Kavana Cooperative, 17 interfaith couples from Seattle, and I returned from Honeymoon Israel, a 10-day immersive experience.

The trip flew by, and I was amazed by how much we did and saw in such a short amount of time. Upon arrival, we welcomed Shabbat in Jerusalem in the beautiful Gan HaAtzmaut Park, then hit the ground running with a historical tour of the old city, shopping at Machane Yehuda Market, and a visit to Yad Vashem, the national Holocaust memorial center. From there, we carried on to climb Masada and float in the Dead Sea before driving north to stay on the Sea of Galilee. We continued onto the spiritual and mystical city of Tzfat and overlooked the Syrian border to discuss the challenges Israel is facing today. Our trip ended in the vibrant city of Tel Aviv where we swam in the ocean, ate our way through Carmel Market, and celebrated our last Shabbat together on the beach at sundown.

Since returning, friends and colleagues have asked me what the best part was. The answer is simple: Seeing Israel through the lens of these young couples, half Jew-ish, half not. I’m excited to continue these connections back in Seattle and officially welcome all 17 couples into our Jewish community.

I think one of our participants, Reebs Shore, said it best on her Instagram page:

“Andrew and I spent 10 days traveling around Israel with 17 Seattle couples, an Israeli tour guide, a Seattle Rabbi and program guide. The program is called Honeymoon Israel, and its purpose as expressed by the founder is to help couples navigate if and how they want to have Jewishness in their family. We saw sights from the Western Wall to the Dead Sea to the Syrian border, learned about the complicated history, current day conflicts, and political system of Israel. Listened to guest lecturers, facilitated conversations, celebrated two Shabbats, indulged in endless Israeli cuisine, and met a bunch of wonderful new friends! It answered some questions, left me with more questions, and was a great opportunity to learn on so many levels! Can’t wait to tell you more about it. #Jew-ish @honeymoonisrael @JewishinSeattle”

Who is eligible?

The HMI experience is open to couples of all cultural, racial, religious, gender, and sexual identities who are looking to create connections with each other and to Jewish life. HMI is for couples between the ages of 25 and 40, with at least one Jewish partner, and in the first five years of marriage or early in their lifelong committed partnership.  

Who should travel with HMI?

Together, HMI and Federation build cohorts for group trips that reflect the diverse demographics of Jewish Puget Sound. They include couples with interfaith, Jewish, and multi-racial backgrounds. HMI is most powerful and impactful for couples who have not yet found a strong connection to Jewish community or Jewish life and are searching for the right ways to incorporate Judaism into their relationship, family, and home.

What does the trip look like?

Spend nine exhilarating, romantic, and memorable days exploring Israel in luxury with the one you love and 19 other couples from the greater Seattle area. You’ll return home with a new community and friends who feel like family.

Before the trip, we’ll host gatherings where you’ll get the chance to meet and get to know the couples you’ll be traveling with.  

On the trip, you’ll experience Israel’s culture, beauty, and society in a way you could never do on your own. You’ll hit the best tourist spots like the Western Wall, Jerusalem’s Old City, and the beaches of Tel Aviv. You’ll have unique experiences you wouldn’t get on a standard vacation, like meals with local families and meetings with high-level public officials and business leaders. You’ll enjoy group tours, choose content-specific tracks to customize your experience, and have time to explore alone with your partner.  

What happens after we return from Israel?

After the Israel trip, the journey continues at home. The cohesive community you build on the ground in Israel is sustained and nurtured, through HMI-organized efforts and participants’ initiatives.

HMI is much more than a trip to Israel. Couples participate in this experience for all the same reasons: to find friends, build community, and connect with Judaism in a new way. HMI provides opportunities for organized local programming. Financial grants help participants create and bring their own programming to life. There is ongoing support to help sustain connections to Jewish life. Our team and local partners understand the unique needs of each city and work directly with participants to co-create Jewish experiences that fit their needs.  

What kind of things happen with HMI at home? There is so much to look forward to! City-wide Shabbat dinners. Alumni-led yoga sessions. Group baby celebrations. Family-friendly camp weekends. High Holy Day festivities. And so much more!

Olympic-sized traffic? L.A. relied on buses in 1984

Four summers from now, Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic Games, bringing widespread media attention and a swell of international tourism. Organizers and local leaders are also bracing for another influx: apocalyptic traffic.

Those are valid concerns in car-centric L.A. There are over 1.5 million more people living in L.A. County now than there were in 1984. The most recent estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau put L.A. County’s population at 9.6 million. At the end of 1984, the county had roughly 7.9 million people, according to state officials .

That’s before considering the major uptick in international tourists bound for L.A. to catch the Games and explore the region. More people going more places generally means more cars — and more traffic.

I wasn’t around (or alive) the last time L.A. hosted the Olympic Games. But in the lead-up to the summer of 1984, there were similar widespread traffic fears. Some lawmakers even proposed moving a holiday to give workers a day off and instituting a temporary four-day workweek as a way to reduce traffic during the games. Four years before those Games, a state Department of Transportation official warned local leaders that the region would be crippled by congestion “unless extraordinary measures are taken.”

Then the 1984 Olympics arrived. How bad was traffic?

What traffic?

“Los Angeles freeways flowed more smoothly during the Olympics than at any time since the last gas crisis,” former Times reporter Mark A. Stein reported in September 1984. “It was a kind of automotive nirvana — higher traffic volumes yet less congestion — that was hard to believe at the time and harder still to explain when it vanished.”

There were a few key actions that contributed to that success. Some businesses adopted flexible schedules, staggering workers’ start times, which meant they weren’t all driving at once. Improved and cohesive real-time traffic data and a united approach to managing congestion also helped.

And there were the buses.

That era’s Southern California Rapid Transit District (predecessor of the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) pulled out all the stops . It boosted its bus fleet by borrowing 550 buses from local agencies, transported passengers in dedicated lanes protected from car traffic and encouraged residents and those attending Olympic events to board the bus rather than drive themselves.

And it worked . Congestion on many local roads fell and the investment in fast, frequent bus service was heralded as a model for how to defeat soul-sucking traffic.

And traffic was never a problem again. *sigh*

The region has changed a lot in the last 30 years. For one thing, we now have six subway and light rail lines spanning more than 100 miles, as opposed to zero lines and zero miles in 1984.

As local leaders’ ambitions to host the Olympics took shape, so did plans to dramatically expand the region’s rail network in time for the Games. L.A.’s hosting gig “creates a strong added incentive to quickly improve mobility across the region,” L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials stated in their Vision 2028 Strategic Plan .

But as Times transportation reporter Rachel Uranga explained recently, their expectations wrote checks that their coffers couldn’t cash.

“The price tag and timeline were out of reach for many of the projects,” Rachel wrote last week . “Metro hasn’t been able to line up even half of the $40 billion needed to pay for them.”

So now, with their grand plans fizzled, officials are turning once more to the humble bus.

Their next challenge, Rachel reported: “trying to figure out how to pay more than $1 billion to run buses that will probably disappear after the Games.”

L.A. Metro has estimated it could cost at least $700 million to hire, train and pay the legion of temporary drivers and mechanics it would take to keep buses running during the event. The agency also may have to lease more buses, which could push that price tag to $1 billion.

Officials from LA28, the private organizing committee behind the upcoming Games, say they won’t foot that entire bill. So who will?

Organizers hope the federal government will help. But Metro officials are expressing more worry, saying existing federal grants won’t come close to the amount needed to pull off another L.A. traffic miracle.

Despite the crumbled or scaled back plans, there’s still some hope for L.A. public transit to have its 2028 moment.

“Officials have dubbed this a ‘car-free’ Games largely because of this lack of parking, which they believe will force visitors to use public transit,” Rachel wrote. “Transit officials hope it will be a bright spot for the Metro system, which has struggled in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
