Home to the Toraja, a Christian and animist people, Tana Toraja has a fascinating culture that’s remained largely and surprisingly independent from western influence.

Torajans are famous for their massive peaked-roof houses known as tongkonan and spectacular but gruesome funeral rites. After a person’s death, the body is kept – often for several years – until the actual funeral ceremony, which can last for several days. The deceased is then finally buried in a small cave or in a hollow tree. The biggest funerals are usually held in the dry-season months of July and August, but there are funerals year-round.

Exploring Tana Toraja with a local guide is expensive but worth it. They’ll give you a sneaky glimpse into these interesting customs and some of the lesser-known burial sites and village compounds known for their colorful exteriors and boat-shaped rooftops. Visit by yourself, and you’ll still be able to see some of the more famous sites on a trekking trip, but you’ll lack the local insight and insider tips that these tours afford.

Bukit Lawang is a small village situated at the eastern side of Gunung Leuser National Park about 90 kilometers northwest of Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. A rehabilitation center for orangutans was founded here in 1973. The main purpose is to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting and deforestation.

The ecotourism here provides jobs and an income for local families living in the village and is a worthy charity to support, if not for the animals alone. The chance to see orangutans in the wild is the major drawcard, but the village is also a worthy stop. It’s built in a sustainable way that takes the surrounding environment into consideration.

Bukit Lawang is a popular destination for guided jungle trekking, acting as the gateway to the Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, you can spot Thomas Leaf Monkeys with their unusual haircuts, walk in the footprints of tigers and elephants, and explore on foot with local bird and nature walks.

Kuta is kind of like the Tijuana of Bali. The streets are narrow here and there are hundreds of stalls, selling faux-brand ripoffs, novelty souvenirs. There are plenty of hotels and you are sure to get some great sun time in, but the frantic energy here is only inviting for so long.

Mt Bromo is an active volcano that lies in the middle of Tengger caldera, a crater of fine volcanic sand in East Java. It sure is a great spot for those looking for some adventures in Indonesia . At 7,641 feet, it is not the highest peak of the massif, but it is the best known. The top of the volcano has been blown off and the crater inside constantly belches white sulfurous smoke. Travelers wake up in the early hours to stand on the rim of the caldera at sunrise for an ethereal view of Mount Bromo and the Sea of Sand.

3. Lake Toba, Sumatra

Lake Toba, on the island of Sumatra, is an immense volcanic lake about 62 miles long, 19 miles wide, and up to 1,657 ft deep. Formed by a gigantic, catastrophic volcanic eruption between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago, it is the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic resurgent caldera on Earth. The island in the middle – Pulau Samosir – is a Singapore-sized island in the middle of Lake Toba; it is actually the fifth-largest lake island in the world inside of the sixth-largest island in the world.

4. Kawah Ijen, Java

Kawah Ijen is a mysterious crater lake, located at the core of a reserve that spans the slopes and summits of three volcanoes. It is one of the most acidic lakes in the world and the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation. Every day an elite class of hardened men known as the ‘sulfur slaves’ tirelessly hump baskets of yellow rocks, weighing up to 200 pounds, from the lake’s edge, up to the crater rim, and then back down the side of the mountain.

The lake is milky turquoise in color, and its mineral purity and surrounding volcano walls provide a surreal sight, especially at night, when the combustion of sulfuric gasses emerges in the form of blue fire.

5. Jatiluwih, Bali

Visiting Bali is one of the very highlights in Indonesia. Jatiluwih, in the heart of the Tabanan Regency in Bali, is also known as Bali’s ‘rice bowl’. It is the most agriculturally productive region on the island, with 1500 acres of rice terraces stretching from the coast and following the graceful hillside topography to as high as 2300 feet above sea level.

The glorious scenery will unfold in front of you like a map as you journey along a narrow winding road up the inclines of Mt Batukaru through steep terraces planted with Asia’s staple crop. Jatiluwih is true to its name, which means ‘extraordinary’ or ‘truly marvelous’, and this scenic point offers a truly breathtaking view.

6. Pura Tanah Lot, Bali

One of the most dramatic and venerated temples in Bali is Pura Tanah Lot, dedicated to the sea spirits and founded by Nirartha, one of the last Majapahit priests to come from Java in the 16th century. The temple is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock just at the edge of the frothing white surf and glistening black shoreline; it is probably the most photographed sight in Bali.

It can only be reached at low tide and the surrounding rocks are rumored to be inhabited by sea snakes. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon when you can see the splendid profile of the temple silhouetted against the setting sun.

7. Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Bali

Pura Luhur Uluwatu, on the southwest tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula cannot be missed. This 11th-century temple is balanced on the very edge of a narrow rocky cape, overhanging perpendicular cliffs 200ft above the crashing breakers of the Indian Ocean. Its grey volcanic stone, glowing with the radiant colors of the setting sun, will leave you with a lasting and haunting memory of spiritual Bali.

Located on the island of Sulawesi, spanning green lush rice terraces with blue misty mountains as a backdrop, Tana Toraja is home to the indigenous Toraja people. The architectural style of their ‘Tongkonan’, boat-shaped ancestral houses, are immediate standouts, but the people are also known for their bizarre funerary rites including the practice of ‘walking’ dead mummified bodies.

Funerals are elaborate ceremonies, and the customary gravesites include cave graves, hanging graves, tau tau (life sized wooden effigies), and baby tree graves.

9. The Orangutans of Kalimantan

No trip to Indonesia would be complete without seeing some orangutans. Tanjung Puting National Park in Kalimantan, Borneo, is home to the largest orangutan population in the world, as well as other primates, birds, and reptiles. Though orangutans still live in the wild, several sanctuaries rescue and protect these beautiful, endangered creatures as land development infringes on their natural habitat.

10. Krakatoa, Java

The island of Krakatoa is located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. In 1883, the dramatic eruption of Krakatau Volcano and a resulting tsunami devastated the entire region. Those humans who did not perish fled, and the land reverted to forest.

Anak Krakatau, “Child of Krakatau”, the youngest of the islands formed by the eruption, forced itself above the surface in 1930. This young and volatile volcano continues to rise higher out of the sea and has frequent and significant eruptions, belching smoke and fire. The island can easily be reached by boat or ferry from Pulau Sebesi.

11. Wakatobi National Park, Sulawesi

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, Wakatobi is an island group situated at the end of the southeastern ‘petal’ of the orchid-shaped island of Sulawesi. It has the highest number of reef and fish species in the world and is also the playground of dolphins, turtles and even whales. The island group comprises 143 islands of which only seven are inhabited. Besides its underwater majesty, Wakatobi offers white-sand beaches, mangrove forests, traditional weaving villages, blacksmiths, and historical ruins.

This vertical cave requires skill, experience, gear and courage to explore. Study and practice single-rope technique before driving to the cave’s mouth. Mount Leuser, Aceh

Hiking this mountain is made difficult by the complicated and unpredictable land—dense untouched jungles, rushing rivers, steep rocks. But the real danger and challenge lies in the wildlife. Even if you stay right on track, there are real possibilities of encountering snakes, bears, even tigers. The summit of Mount Leuser can be reached in about two weeks. The mountain is located in a relatively remote area, and to reach the starting point tourists have to switch flights in the country’s Sharia-governed Aceh Province.

Breueh Island, Aceh

Sabang is the westernmost city of Indonesia. Further to the northwest is Breueh Island, one of the most beautiful and remote islands in the region. To reach it you’ll have to find a fisherman on a nearby island who doesn’t mind taking extra passengers, as there’s no ferry or organized boat operators there.

Lake Kaco, Jambi

This mystical lake has become somewhat like a fairy-tale, as not many tourists are prepared to traverse 500 kilometers of jungle between the lake and the nearest town, Jambi. The road trip takes at least 10 hours, followed by four hours of walking through dense jungles. The luminescent lake is approximately 30 meters wide and surrounded by lush jungle. Although the opulent blue water is breathtaking, Lake Kaco is even more mystical at night, when the surface of the water reflects the moonlight like a mirror. Daring adventurers can swim in this mysterious lake, but don’t expect to see its bottom. Nobody has ever dived to the bottom.

Siroktabe Island, North Sumatra

This remote island off the coast of Sumatra offers the ultimate survival adventure, with no facilities whatsoever — no homestays, toilet, or kitchen, let alone electricity or communication networks. Adventurers will have to rely on their own wits to find transportation to this island, whether by convincing a fisherman to take them or finding a tour operator (although there are only a couple that will go here). Don’t attempt to canoe your way to this virgin, idyllic island, though. It’s not even on Google Maps. Daredevils can enjoy the whole island and have the vast white stretch of beach for themselves.

Baliem Valley, Papua

The remote location and challenging landscape make a trip to Baliem Valley not only difficult but also very expensive. The flight to the nearest airport alone costs significantly more than flights to any other town in the country, and switching flights will be necessary. Baliem Valley is just an entry point to a whole other world of wonderful, mesmerizing, and largely unknown cultures of Papua. Tourists will have to hire a local guide to get through the dense forests to the villages, where indigenous tribes live.

Indonesia is raw, uncharted travel at its best. This group of 17,000 islands is largely unexplored by tourists and it has everything you could want in an adventure: volcanoes , waterfalls , jungles, underwater coral reefs, and lots of unique wildlife above and below the sea.

The most famous destination in Indonesia is the island of Bali , with its green rice paddies, luxury resorts, and local cuisine, but there are some other interesting places in Indonesia too. The islands of Komodo , Sumatra , and Sulawesi are great places for seeing exotic wildlife, while less known Sumba has white sand beaches and rolling green hills.

Where Is Indonesia?

First things first -- where is Indonesia on the world map?

Indonesia is a country located in Southeast Asia and it’s made up of more than 17,000 islands. The main islands are Sumatra , Java , Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo), Sulawesi , and the Indonesian part of New Guinea (known as West Papua or Irian Jaya).

Indonesia is surrounded by Malaysia , the  Philippines , Papua New Guinea, and Australia, as you can see (in red) on the map below (© Wikimedia).

As a tourist, your main airports in Indonesia will be Bali (code: DPS) and Jakarta (code: CGK). These have lots of direct flights from other countries around the world.

Other major airports include Surabaya (SUB) in East Java, Medan (KNO) in Sumatra, Makassar (UPG) in south Sulawesi, and Manado (MDC) in north Sulawesi. You can shop for flights to Indonesia on Skyscanner.

Indonesia is a tropical country, so the weather is hot and humid year round.

The climate can vary a bit between islands, but generally Indonesia has a rainy season that runs from November to April, and a dry season that runs from April to November. It’s still very possible to visit Indonesia in the rainy season, but give yourself some buffer days in case of bad weather.

The best time to visit Indonesia depends on what you’re looking for. The nicest weather is during the dry season, when it's generally sunny and windy. This is a great time to hike a mountain (or volcano) and go see wildlife in the jungle.

However, the wet season can be a great time to see waterfalls and bright green crop terraces, and the rain is mostly in the evenings or at night anyway, so it's usually not too disruptive.

Is Indonesia Safe?

Indonesia is one of the safest countries in the world, with a very low murder rate of 0.5 per 100k inhabitants (92% lower than the global average), according to the United Nations yearly study.

I’ve traveled alone in many parts of Indonesia and haven't really witnessed any crime. Just take normal precautions. Indonesia is a Muslim majority country, and outside of Bali the culture is very conservative, so it’s important to dress modestly. Terrorism is not a significant issue here and attitudes toward foreigners are generally welcoming.

The biggest safety risks are transportation and natural threats, like animals, mosquitoes, volcanoes, and earthquakes. I’d also stay away from motorbikes here unless you’re an experienced driver in Southeast Asia. However, one of my closest brushes with death in Indonesia was probably a boat trip in Sumatra where we ran into a bad storm.

Mosquito spray and bed nets are always a good idea, especially in the rainy season and outside of the city. Malaria is still a serious problem in West Papua and the Mentawai islands, as well as some parts of Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. You can find a helpful map of the main risk areas for malaria here . The malaria risk areas have shrunk quite a bit now, but there are still some places in Indonesia you may want to take anti-malarial pills.

There are many types of venomous snakes and other dangerous animals in Indonesia, but they're not common to see in the popular tourist areas, even if you go hiking.

Indonesia is a very budget friendly travel destination, with  hostels available from 75k Rupiah ($5 USD) and private hotels from 150k . Meals are also cheap, costing about 15k to 75k Rupiah depending on location.

Transportation in Indonesia is generally by motorbike or car, and these can be rented, but hiring a driver is cheap and often preferable.

I'd recommend downloading the transportation apps  Grab and Go-Jek ; these are great for getting around in the cities, and you can also order food with them.

Indonesian People

Indonesian people are the nicest!  I even married one !

The country has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the world, and we’ve stayed in homestays all over Indonesia without any worry. The people are really friendly and welcoming.

If you travel outside of Bali, especially in remote parts of Java or Sulawesi, you’ll probably get lots of funny photo requests from the locals excited to see a rare ‘bule’ (foreigner).

For every island and province in Indonesia, there’s a unique culture to go with it. Some of the top cultural destinations in the country are Sumba,  Tana Toraja  (one of the world’s most unusual cultures), Wae Rebo (a remote mountain village in Flores), and of course Bali.

Bali  may be touristy, but it still has a lot of great culture to soak up. The Balinese language, dress, traditions, and architecture are still very intact and haven’t changed too much since Bali became popular with foreigners.

When you’re traveling in remote parts of Indonesia outside of Bali and the big cities, infrastructure may be limited.

Oftentimes that means no WiFi or air-conditioning (fan only), and sometimes it means washing yourself with a simple water scoop instead of a shower. On more remote islands (such as the Banyaks ), you may have no electricity at all except by generator in the evening.

Living without these daily luxuries takes some getting used to, but it’s worth it to see some of the best places off the beaten path in Indonesia (and not just Bali). The infrastructure will catch up over time as tourism continues to grow in new areas. For now, enjoy the wilderness experience for what it is!

Indonesian Food

Indonesia has a lot of great food, and the dishes are similar to what you’ll find in Malaysia and Singapore .

Some good things to try are Satay Ayam (chicken skewers), Rendang Sapi (spicy beef curry), Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Martabak (omelette pancake), and for dessert Pisang Goreng (fried bananas).

Don’t expect to find hardly any Western food outside of Bali (except for the occasional Pizza Hut or KFC in big cities), but that’s okay. You'll probably fall in love with the local food, and it's cheap!

Things To Do In Indonesia

There are so many amazing things to do in Indonesia, it's hard to know where to start.

Everyone goes to  Bali , which is an amazing island (don’t get me wrong!), but it’s been suffering from overtourism and overdevelopment for years.

If you branch out to the other  islands in Indonesia , you can see smoking volcanoes, sulfur lakes,  pink sand beaches , tropical rainforests, exotic wildlife, and so much more.

Indonesia is one of those countries where if you’re not exploring the outdoors, you’re doing it wrong.

Don’t waste any time in the cities, just get in nature as soon as possible! Of course you have the islands and beaches, but there are also all kinds of other scenery in Indonesia too.

From Sumatra to Papua, you can find a wide variety of lakes, mountains, caves, rainforests, giant boulders, sand dunes, and more.

Bali is famous for  its green rice terraces , but you can also see scenic crop terraces all over Java, Lombok, and many other islands. Check out the  Dieng Plateau  in central Java, or the steep Majalengka terraces in West Java!

You can explore a sparkling limestone cave at  Rammang Rammang  in Sulawesi, or  swim in a blue pool at the Rangko Cave in Flores.

One of these prehistoric caves in Sulawesi even has  the world’s oldest known cave art  made by humans, which we found completely fascinating!

Indonesia has 400 volcanoes, and up to 130 of them are active — more than any other country in the world.

Most of the volcanoes in Indonesia are open to tourists for hiking, and at some of them (like Mount Bromo  in Java) you can even walk up to the edge of the smoking crater!

Where you have volcanoes, you also have plenty of volcanic lakes and hot springs!

Some of these hot springs are suitable for swimming, and others make for fantastic photos. The most famous volcanic lake in Indonesia is probably the Kawah Ijen  crater in East Java, which is pretty close to Bali.

Two other great spots to check out are  Kawah Putih  in West Java, and the three  lakes of Mount Kelimutu  in Flores.

Waterfalls In Indonesia

A lot of the best waterfalls in Indonesia are located in Sumatra and Java, but even the smaller islands like  Bali  and Lombok have some great ones too.

In fact, pretty much every island in this country has at least a few stunning waterfalls if you do a bit of exploring.

One of the biggest falls in Indonesia is the Ponot Waterfall in North Sumatra, which is a giant 3-step waterfall near the famous Lake Toba, and it has a height of more than 250 meters (820 feet)!

Wildlife In Indonesia

Indonesia has almost 20 percent of the world’s animal species, so there’s a lot of endemic wildlife to see here that can’t be found anywhere else.

You can watch the world’s biggest lizards on  Komodo Island , bug-eyed tarsiers at the  Tangkoko Reserve  in Sulawesi, wild orangutans at  Bukit Lawang  in Sumatra, and of course the famous macaques at the  Ubud Monkey Forest  in Bali.

Indonesia has some of the world’s most important rainforests, and sadly a lot of them are critically endangered because of rampant deforestation. In addition to the animals, which are amazing, you can see giant banyan trees and the world’s biggest flowers .

Indonesia is also part of the Coral Triangle, a tropical ocean wonderland with most of the world’s coral and fish species.

Needless to say, it’s a great place to go diving or snorkeling, and you can see all kinds of rare fish, colorful corals, sea turtles, manta rays, and if you’re lucky you may even get to swim with a whale shark!

We’ve had great success snorkeling in pretty much every part of Indonesia, but our top pick would probably be  Belitung island  in south Sumatra.

Beaches In Indonesia

When people think of nice beaches in Asia, they think Maldives or Thailand , not Indonesia.

Indonesia beaches  are fantastic, but they tend to be underrated because a lot of the really good ones are hiding in remote places without easy access. On the bright side, that means you’re more likely to have them to yourself!

With some exploring, what you’ll find are the most amazing white sand beaches, dazzling  pink beaches , and black volcanic beaches, along with top quality surf spots, and occasionally some very photogenic cliffs, boulders, and shipwrecks.

Landmarks In Indonesia

Two of the best landmarks to see in Indonesia are Borobudur Temple, which is the biggest Buddhist temple in the world, and Prambanan Temple , which looks kind of like the  Angkor Wat in Cambodia .

They’re both located in Yogyakarta city in central Java, and Borobudur is a popular spot for sunrise.

Most of Indonesia's photogenic temples are located in Bali. A few iconic Balinese temples you should check out are Uluwatu , Tanah Lot , and Ulun Danu Beratan .

In Java, the temples have been reconstructed from their old ruins (like Angkor Wat), but they’re still pretty fascinating.

For natural landmarks, check out Bali’s famous  Kelingking Cliff , or the iconic  Padar Island  viewpoint in Komodo.

Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands, so get to hopping! We've spent years exploring Indonesia, and still barely scratched the surface.

In Komodo or Raja Ampat, you can even stay on a comfy liveaboard boat and spend several days roaming the seas to your heart’s content.

There are so many hidden gems waiting to be discovered in this wild and wonderful country, and many of the best things to do in Indonesia are off the beaten path.

Found in central Java, Yogyakarta is just hour east of Jakarta & 1.5 hours west of Bali by plane. Yogyakarta-Adisutjipto International Airport is the primary gateway to the city. It’s located in the city center while the temples are within an easy drive away.

Mount Bromo can be found in Central Java. The most popular way is to travel to Probolinggo by land from Surabaya, Banyuwangi, Yogyakarta, Jakarta or other cities on the island. Then, ride a bus or shuttle to Cemoro Lawang village, the main tourist area in Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. A jeep or motorcycle taxi (ojek) ride to the base of the summit takes less than 30 minutes. And, a 30-minute to 1-hour ascent on steep stairs, takes you to the crater rim. You can also reach Cemoro Lawang via Malang, located west of Mount Bromo. Although public transport is quite limited, this can be a good option if you’re headed from Yogyakarta. The way to Cemoro Lawang passes through the scenic village of Ngadas, Mount Bromo’s savannah, and the sea of sand.

5. Komodo Islands

Location : East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia . Save on Google Maps .

The Komodo Islands should be at the top of your list if you’ve been dreaming of visiting the remote islands of the World’s biggest archipelagic country. Located over an hour east of Bali by flight, Komodo National Park is home to the giant Komodo Dragons and stunning natural sights including a rare Pink Beach!

The fastest way is to fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo (1.5 hours), the gateway town to Komodo Islands. Then, join one of many speedboat or slow boat tours from Labuan Bajo to reach the stunning islands in Komodo National Park.

Labuan Bajo is 1.5 hours east of Bali by plane. Komodo Airport is the main airport that serves Labuan Bajo and this side of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The drive to the town center usually takes 20 minutes or less. You can also fly direct from Jakarta. Travel time takes 2.5 hours. Bali-Labuan Bajo flights are operated by Garuda Indonesia, Wings Air, Kal Star & Lion Air. Meanwhile, the Jakarta-Labuan Bajo route is operated only by Garuda Indonesia.

7. Gili Islands

Lombok Island is Bali’s less touristic and much larger neighbor. It is famous for the pristine Gili Islands and Mount Rinjani in the north, and Kuta (Lombok) Beach, a surfing haven, in the south. If you want to explore the country beyond Bali, go east to Lombok to enjoy nature, witness the distinct traditions of the Sasak people, and experience a different side of Indonesia.

Lombok is the next big island east of Bali. Lombok International Airport is the primary gateway to the island. It is easily accessible by flight from Bali (30 minutes), Jakarta (2 hours) and Surabaya (1 hour and 15 minutes). You can also fly direct from Singapore (2 hours, 45 minutes) and Kuala Lumpur (3 hours, 15 minutes). Flights are run by AirAsia, Batik Air, Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, SilkAir & Wings Air. Another popular option is to go on a Bali-Lombok ferry. You can either take a fast boat and arrive at the Gili Islands, from Padang Bai or Sanur. Visit the sights in Central Jakarta including Monas (National Monument of Indonesia) at Merdeka Square, Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta Cathedral & National Museum of Indonesia.

Walk around historic Jakarta Old Batavia. Explore Fatahillah Square, Jakarta History Museum, Wayang Museum & Maritime Museum

Wander around Glodok (Chinatown) and go on a food walk in Pasar Baru (Jakarta’s oldest market).

Mount Ijen is one of Indonesia’s unique trekking destinations. It is famous for electric blue lava-like rivers of light a.k.a the “blue flames” that is best seen when it’s still dark. The trek starts before sunrise and passes through sulfur mines before reaching the crater lake. Along the way, you’ll see miners carry huge loads of sulfur rocks back to the base camp, and breathtaking views of the volcano.

Located on the far east of Java Island, Banyuwangi is the main gateway city to Mount Ijen. From Banyuwangi city center, go on a 1.5-hour drive up the mountain to Pos Palduting. And, a 1 to 2-hour trek to the crater lake and sulfur mines at Mount Ijen. Most travelers reach Banyuwangi by ferry from Bali or by land from Surabaya or Probolinggo. You can also fly to Banyuwangi Airport from Surabaya on Garuda Indonesia or Wings Air. And, from Bali on Garuda Indonesia.

19. Mount Rinjani

Location : Sembalun Lawang, Sembalun, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia . Save on Google Maps .

At a height of 3,726 meters, Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second highest active volcano. Trekking here is a big physical challenge for most travelers, but the sunrise views of the crater lake and sea of clouds are well worth the effort. If you’re not up for the challenge, there are majestic waterfalls on the base of the mountain that are worth the trip as well.

Senaru village on the north side of Lombok Island is the main gateway for treks to Mount Rinjani. The waterfalls in Senaru are within an hour’s hike from the village center. By private car, the drive to Senaru from Lombok Airport takes 4 hours~ while it only takes 1.5 hours~ from Bangsal harbor, the ferry landing to the Gili Islands.

If you plan to summit, you might find Sembalun Lawang village a better jump-off point. Book a 2 days & 1 night trekking tour to see the sunrise at the crater rim of Mount Rinjani. Or, go on a 3 days & 2 nights Sembalun-Senaru traverse if you want to reach the peak. Mount Rinjani treks are among the most popular trekking tours in Indonesia. So, arranging a trip is really easy.

Surabaya is 2 hours east of Jakarta by plane. Surabaya-Juanda International Airport is Indonesia’s second busiest airport. It’s one of the main flight hubs of Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia AirAsia, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya Air.

You can fly direct from Kuala Lumpur (2.5 hours), Hong Kong (5 hours), Singapore (2 hours), Taipei (5 hours), Jeddah (10.5 hours), Brunei (2 hours) and Penang (3 hours).

PETALING JAYA: With some Japanese multinational corporations (MNCs) looking beyond Singapore to base their regional headquarters due to the rising cost there, Malaysia has what it takes to position itself as a viable destination, say economists.

Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng said Malaysia’s investment promotion efforts and its rising competitiveness in attracting multinationals to relocate from Singapore and elsewhere are gradually bearing fruit.

“Its well-developed physical, financial and logistics infrastructure, harmonious industrial relations, multilingual workforce and embedded global value chains are gaining increasing attention among foreign investors looking at opportunities in the dynamic Asean and Asian region as a whole,” he said.

By further enhancing government administrative efficiency and coordination effectiveness, as well as sharper policies focusing on facilitating trade and investment, Malaysia would become even more attractive as the next best alternative to Singapore, which is facing rising costs and growth constraints, he added.

“In addition to presenting opportunities for firms here to plug into the global value chains created by MNCs, domestic suppliers and service providers will need to up their game in terms of product and service quality, reliability and cost-efficiency.

“The efficiency of local supply chains will have a ‘crowding in’ effect that would further boost Malaysia’s appeal as a global service and manufacturing hub,” Prof Yeah added.

Economist Geoffrey Williams said despite sharing similar advantages with Singapore, such as the use of English language, high-quality workers and regional access, Malaysia has the edge over the city-state in terms of being cost-effective.

“There are also some good companies in key sectors such as technology and finance to work with in Malaysia.

“Against Indonesia and Vietnam, these advantages are also helping, but the Malaysian market is small. Vietnam is three times bigger and Indonesia is nine times larger.

“They are also opening up directly to MNCs,” he said.

Although the recent surge in applications and approvals for investments is positive, it must be converted into actual investments, Williams said.

“Historically, only 26% of foreign direct investment (FDI) approvals result in actual investment.

“So, the process must be streamlined with less red tape, quicker approvals of working permits, easier access to financial help and even to open bank accounts, and in general, a more welcoming low-tax, low-regulation, agile and competitive ecosystem is needed,” he added.

Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) head of research and senior research fellow Dr Shankaran Nambiar said by and large, Malaysia has “excellent infrastructure” although it will have to be constantly upgraded.

“All we need to do is to fine-tune some of our existing assets and put in place some structural changes. More could be done to reduce bureaucratic processes.

“Similarly, the offerings and roles of the central and state agencies can be brought into closer alignment,” he said.

More challenging would be to develop talent consistent with emerging technologies and to bring research and development (R&D) up to mark, he said.

“If we could attract FDI with our R&D capacity, that would be a real investment-puller,” Shankaran added.

Nikkei Asia recently reported that although Singapore is unlikely to be dethroned as the leading hub for Japanese companies, Malaysia and Thailand are potential alternatives.

The report also noted that printing ink maker Sakata Inx did not choose Singapore as its regional head office base, despite already having a presence in the region, but instead established it in Malaysia due to tax incentives.

According to the findings of a poll by the Japan External Trade Organisation released in March, among Japanese companies which had their regional headquarters in Singapore, 31% had partly relocated their functions to another country or were considering doing so.

In the 2019 edition of the survey, only 7.4% companies had indicated the same.

In a 2023 survey by the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, 69% of respondents indicated that they were willing to move some personnel out due to the rising cost of operations in the city-state.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) reported a historic investment performance in 2023, with approved investments valued at RM329.5bil across various economic sectors.

InvestKL attracted a record-breaking RM8.7bil in FDI in 2023, a 300% jump from the RM2.79bil in 2022.

About 66% of these investments, valued at RM19.74bil, have already materialised. This translates into the creation of 27,000 executive jobs, of which 74% has been filled, said InvestKL.

It added that 12 leading global corporations from the Americas, Europe and Asia regions drove the FDI.

InvestKL chief executive officer Datuk Muhammad Azmi Zulkifli said in March that the unprecedented FDI into Greater KL showcases the city’s attractiveness across diverse sectors such as technology, healthcare, finance and engineering, signifying a major achievement in efforts to attract high-value activities.
