It is one of the most visited destinations in the Indonesian archipelago. We would recommend it to you even if you have already been there because there is so much to do and see in Bali that one trip is not enough.

15 Best Day Trips from Singapore

Though it is widely considered to be a playground for the wealthy with its high-end shopping malls, astoundingly luxurious hotels and Michelin star restaurants, Singapore also has a wealth of historical and cultural significance, with vibrant ethnic districts and gorgeous green spaces.

While you should by all means indulge in the high-end temptations of the city-state, as well as the cultural ones, Singapore happens to be incredibly well situated when it comes to visiting other places for the day.

You can reach the neighbouring countries of Malaysia and Indonesia in a matter of hours and all the glorious paradise beaches and islands that they offer.

Singapore itself also contains various outlying islands which offer everything from cosmopolitan to traditional, with a variety of gorgeous beaches and traditional villages in between.

Let’s explore the best day trips from Singapore :

1. Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island

An island which is an undeniable tourist hub owing to the tremendous amount of activities on offer there, Sentosa Island is arguably Singapore’s most popular day trip and it’s easy to see why.

Coined as the “fun state”, Sentosa literally does have something for everyone; from shopping malls and casinos to nature walks and even the famous Resorts World Sentosa.

Here you’ll find a Universal Studios Theme Park; perfect for families and casual visitors alike.

You can reach Sentosa Island by cable car, giving you sweeping views and an adrenaline rush before the real fun has even begun.

2. Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin

The island of Pulau Ubin is a wildly contrasting alternative to the heaving, commercial bustle that is Sentosa.

As Singapore’s second most-known island, it still sees its fair share of visitors, but feels nowhere near as crowded.

Pulau Ubin is a mixture of beautiful coastline, serene bike paths and the breath taking Chek Jawa Wetlands; all of which can be seen in the space of a day and offer a much-needed escape from Singapore’s urban sprawl.

Here, you’ll also find the last surviving traditional villages of Singapore; a cultural gem which is a pleasure to walk around while learning about the island’s history.

Bintan Island

Wide, sweeping white-sand beaches and lush jungles are the main port of call on the island of Bintan in Indonesia, only a short ferry ride away from Singapore’s metropolitan areas.

The island caters for adventure travellers looking for sun and surf, whilst also offering a tempting array of world-class, high-end resorts for bigger spenders.

In Pantai Trikora, you’ll find a laidback beach vibe with excellent food, where many travellers make their way to experience the authentic atmosphere.

Towards the north coast of the island, where the beaches become ever more pristine, you’ll find the resorts and hotels offering untold luxury and various beach bars where you can go to enjoy a drink for a few hours.

Batam Island

A mixture of cultural and entertainment attractions can be found on Batam Island: also in Indonesia and a mere hour away from Singapore by ferry.

Popular amongst expats and Singaporeans alike, there are notably cheaper shopping and casino experiences to be found here, as well as a thriving nightlife scene, meaning you can expect a buzzing hub of travellers and locals enjoying themselves.

The predominantly seafood cuisine is particularly delicious on Batam.

There is a wide variety of water sports to be enjoyed, all of which can be found at Waterfront City.

For a slice of culture, head over to the Mesjid Raya Grand Mosque or the famed Buddhist temple: Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya.

5. Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru

Situated on the Southern Malay Peninsula, Johor Bahru, also referred to as JB, is Malaysia’s third largest city and well known as a great shopping destination, with most consumer goods being considerably less expensive than Singapore.

Only an hour away on the bus, here you can also find an enchanting mixture of cultural sites, ranging from mosques to Chinese temples.

Particularly popular is the Hindu Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple due to its unique design.

Malacca, Malaysia

Before Singapore took the title, Malacca used to be the most important trading port in Southeast Asia, making it a truly fascinating place to visit.

The preservation of colonial architecture is one of the main attractions for tourists, and popular sites include the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, as well as the 18th Century Dutch House at Heeren Street.

Food is also a red-hot attraction here, with Malay and Perankan dishes featuring heavy Portuguese influence found around every corner.

This, combined with the colonial beauty of the area, gained Malacca UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008.

7. Iskandar Puteri

Iskandar Puteri

The thriving city of Iskandar Puteri is a fantastic place for a family day trip, owing to the wildly popular Legloland Malaysia and Hello Kitty Indoor Theme Park, both instant hits with local children and playful adults.

Puteri Harbour is also renowned for its world-class restaurants serving everything from Indian to Western food.

If you’re up for a spot of retail therapy, you’ll find some unbeatable shopping at the premium luxury brand outlet: Johor Premium Outlets.

Desaru

Glittering, sapphire-blue waters and pristine white sand beaches are commonplace on the island of Desaru, making it one of the most popular getaway spots for Singaporeans looking for a paradise getaway.

The fact that it’s only a 30-minute ferry ride away from Changi Ferry Terminal makes it all the more appealing, especially for a quick day trip.

If you want to experience something other than just a day relaxing on the beach, then head over to Desaru Ostrich Farm, where you can get up close and personal with these enormous birds and even try ostrich egg products.

9. Kusu Island

Kusu Island

Only a brief ferry ride away from Singapore is the island of Kusu; which also means “Tortoise Island” in Chinese.

The island is an intriguing combination of religious significance and almost untouched pristine tropical land.

Kusu is full of blue lagoons, gorgeous beaches and an abundance of wildlife, but it is also the site of an annual pilgrimage for many people who flock to places like the Da Bo Gong Temple in search of prosperity.

There are three Malay saints housed in holy shrines perched at the top of a 152-step climb.

Both sites are fascinating to visit and, combined with the island’s natural beauty, make Kusu an unmissable day trip.

10. St John’s Island

St John’s Island, Singapore

An island spanning 40 hectares that has been thoughtfully developed into a haven for outdoor activities, St Johns Island is an endearing tranquil getaway for those who want to have island time but not be completely without amenities.

Here you can swim in lagoons, settle down for a picnic, hike some moderate trekking routes, or kick a ball around on one of the soccer fields.

For those that may want to spend the night there, you’ll have no trouble finding various bungalow and chalet complexes available for rent.

11. Lazarus Island

Lazarus Island, Singapore

Easily reachable via a short walkway from St John’s is the enviably beautiful Lazarus Island; even more gorgeous than its neighbour and much more untouched, providing a real island getaway for the nearby Singaporeans.

Here there are barely any amenities, so get ready to completely unwind, unplug, and find a spot of unspoiled white sand to have a picnic, or a patch of jungle to stretch the legs.

You can arrive from Marina South Pier; be sure to pack supplies for the day.

12. Sisters Island

Sisters Island, Singapore

Only a short ferry ride from Singapore are the legendary Sisters Islands, made up of two spits of land separated by a narrow channel.

Wildly popular amongst snorkelers for the abundance of marine life found amongst the reefs below the surface, the islands attract many marine enthusiasts, whether professional or just giving it a go.

The beaches peppered with palm trees and beach huts are also a hit with picnic-goers who will often come here for the day in search of a quiet place to relax.

13. Coney Island

Coney Island, Singapore

Coney Island has long been focussed on sustainability and environmental initiatives, which led to it even closing its gates to the public at one time.

Now that it has reopened, visitors can come and explore how the natural elements of the park are maintained, and learn about water and energy conservation.

Coney Island Park and the island itself are reachable from Singapore by taxi.

14. Pulau Hantu

Pulau Hantu Diving

Another island that is incredibly popular with snorkelers is Pulau Hantu, whose diverse ecosystem of fish includes clownfish, seahorses and damsel fish; all thriving under the surface of the crystal-clear waters.

The island is also inviting to children as it’s full of safe, shallow lagoons and sheltered beaches, making it an ideal place for them to play.

Arriving is slightly more complex than with other islands however, as you’ll have to charter your own boat from the West Coast Pier of Singapore.

15. Pulau Semakau

Pulau Semakau

Though it may seem unappealing to the average traveller, Pulau Semakau was actually built on top of a landfill.

However, it has been designed so conscientiously that it is completely unpolluted, odour free, and completely clean.

The huge scale recycling feat has actually gained the island legendary status among eco activists and Pulau Semaku is now a thriving eco getaway.

Flourishing mangrove habitats attract visitors from far and wide and the snorkelling scene is also flourishing.

Here, the coral reefs are vibrant and full of life, and there is even a coral nursery.

Day trips from Singapore

Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands

This popular hilltop retreat in Malaysia has something for everyone – whether you're heading to the casino or spending the day with your family at the kid-friendly theme parks.

EAT  Burger & Lobster Malaysia

Skip the queues at the Burger & Lobster outlets in Singapore and head to the establishment's first Southeast Asia outlet at Genting Highland's lifestyle mall, SkyAvenue. If you have specific dietary requirements, the Genting outlet is also the chain's first halal restaurant. You can't miss the restaurant's signature Chilli Lobster, which is exclusive to the Malaysia outlet.

DRINK  Powerplant Malaysia

This Korean jaunt is the place to go to for fried chicken, hot pot, and ice-cold beers – all while vibing to the live music every night.

DO  Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

Leave your worries at the door and have an exhilarating time at the newly renovated Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, which has state-of-the-art rides, such as the virtual reality centre with a variety of experiences from Star Wars, to Wreck-it Ralph and Ghostbusters.

STAY Resort Hotel

If you're staying the weekend, cosy up at Resort Hotel to be right in the middle of the action. The Mezzanine Deluxe Room is perfect for couples, while the Deluxe Twin room is great if you're travelling with friends. You'll have views overlooking the mountains, too.

If you do just one thing...  Don't miss the chance to embark on the Awana SkyWay, which takes you up to the peak in just 10 minutes. On the scenic ride up, you get a free stop at the Chin Swee Station, where you can explore the magnificent Chin Swee Caves Temple.

Ipoh

Once a sleepy village in the valley of the Kinta River, Ipoh has undergone a transformation over the years and is now one of Malaysia's coolest emerging destinations. It evokes a retro-vibe, reminiscent of Kuala Lumpur in the past.

EAT Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong  Ipoh is known for its hawker fare. One institution popular with both locals and tourists is Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong, where you can find one of Ipoh's delicacies: bean sprouts with chicken rice.

DRINK  Restaurant Ah Chow  Ipoh is the birthplace of Malaysia's famous white coffee, and you can easily find it in retro cafes scattered throughout the city. Besides the original Old Town White Coffee Shop, check out local favourite Restaurant Ah Chow. Here's a tip: Ask for the "secret weapon" menu option, their kopi o kosong – which is essentially white coffee prepared with a hint of alcohol.

DO Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail

Trek the Ulu Geroh Rafflesia Trail, located a little way outside of Ipoh in the village of Ulu Geroh in Gopeng. Besides the largest flower in the world, you will also chance upon rubber plantations, durian orchards, and quaint local villages. However, take note that to trek along the trail, you will need a Semai Orang Asli guide from the village.

STAY Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel One of the first boutique hotels in Ipoh that sparked its new identity, Sekeping Kong Heng Hotel takes over a preserved three-storey neo-classical building. Don't skip the eponymous famous coffee shop on the ground floor, serving up amazing coffee and some of the best local dishes in town.

If you do just one thing...  Explore Ipoh's historic laneways, such as Concubine Lane, for its street art and culture precincts. Ipoh's preserved architecture is a sight to behold, consisting of heritage shophouses with Chinese and British colonial elements – complete with five-foot ways and pretty shutters and tiles.

Malacca

If you're looking for an idyllic heritage town to spend a quiet weekend in, the charming and quaint Malacca is only a few hours drive away from Singapore. Rows of shophouses, Peranakan antiques, winding laneways and plentiful of good food at every corner, this town is your dream road trip destination. There's history, heaps of culture, too much food and many happy photo opportunities to be had.

EAT Pak Putra

Despite all the guide books telling you to eat your weight in assam laksa and chicken rice balls, skip the advice and try out Pak Putra, an open-air, open-at-night-only establishment. For the best naan you'll have, amazing Tandoori chicken, and assorted curries, this is a must-go when you're in town.

DRINK The Daily Fix

Blink and you might miss this buzzy cafe located within a gift store. You'll be surprised to find that this is no sleepy, quiet spot. Still, if you do bag a spot, the coffee is the best in town. Rose lattes, ice mochas and the cold-brewed tea (ask the staff to see what's brewing for the day), it's the erfect complement to your short getaway. The kids will love the selection of fluffy pancakes in gula melaka, chocolate chip and more.

DO The Clay House

Here's a different sort of holiday shopping: it's where you take the time to make your own wares to bring home. Drop by the rustic store and pottery studio where you can sign up for a session to get your hands dirty. From sculpting to glazing, you'll be bringing home your own handmade cups, bowls, lamps, aromatherapy burners and more.

STAY 1825 Gallery Hotel

When in Malacca, stay by the river, just so you won't be too far from all the good food and good spots in town. This colonial-style heritage building is located just outside the main Jonker Street area but still close to everything. Rooms are spacious so if you're rooming with the family, there's enough sleeping space for everyone. Splurge on a room upgrade with river views, a balcony and your own personal whirlpool tub.

If you do just one thing... Besides just eating and cafe-hopping, Malacca is huge on its antique stores as well. From Chinese porcelain stools to crystals and gemstones (think agate face rollers and rose quartz stone massagers), batik and fabric stores to rattan furniture shops, it's a different kind of shopping sans malls here in Malacca.

Penang

A popular weekend getaway for its famous hawker food, street art, history and culture, Penang is a great pick for a quick getaway from Singapore. Whether you choose to go on a road trip with friends or catch a quick and cheap flight there, the first thing you will surely do when you reach is to go on an eating binge.

EAT Kafe Khoon Hiang

When in Penang, you have to try one of the most famous local offerings, char kway teow. Don't think that just because you've tasted the ones here, you've tasted it all. The charred flat rice noodles are tossed with juicy prawns, crunchy bean sprouts and scrambled duck eggs.

DRINK The Canteen At ChinaHouse

When hanging out in a new town on holiday, kicking back with a cold drink in hand and all-around chill vibes are important. At The Canteen, it's all about dressing down and enjoying the nightly live music covering genres from jazz to indie, while sipping on your favourite cocktail.

DO  Penang National Park

If you have had enough of culture and the food, pack your bags and hike the Penang National Park. See the best of Penang's rainforests and beaches in this huge park. Enjoy spectacular views from canopy trails or sink your feet into the pristine sand on the beach.

STAY Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

If it looks familiar to you, you might recognise it from an important scene in Crazy Rich Asians. The mansion also happens to be a boutique hotel with 18 personalised rooms – and all of the rooms are different and tastefully decorated with 19th-century antiques.

If you do just one thing... Hunt for murals on the street of Penang. Penang's famous and colourful murals have made for Instagram fodder. There's one on almost every wall so get exploring and remember to snap some pics.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur

Leaving the city to another city? Kuala Lumpur it is. There's much to see and do (and eat) in this city that seemingly never sleeps. From suppers in the open air to fancy air-conditioned malls, the familiarity might even remind you of Singapore at times but with a myriad of new adventures waiting for you.

EAT Wong Ah Wah Restaurant

When in KL be sure to make some time for some barbecue chicken wings – possibly the best you'll ever have at this no-frills open-air zi char place at food street, Jalan Alor. While you won't go wrong with the standard dishes like salted egg yolk chicken, braised vegetables and fried rice, it's the chicken that's barbecued right in front of you that is the absolute standout. Brined overnight, the end result is a smoky, salty and just-the-right-amount of oily masterpiece.

DRINK PS150

Have fun trying to find this speakeasy in KL's Chinatown, Petaling Street. Housed in an old shophouse that was once a brother, the space is unassuming, intimate (think In The Mood For Love vibes) and romantic all at once. The drink menu is divided into five distinct eras in the history of cocktails itself: Vintage, Prohibition, Tiki, Disco and Contemporary.

DO Batu Caves

Interestingly enough, one thing to do in KL is to get out of KL. A 30-minute train ride, or 13km from the city is the majestic Batu Caves worth seeing in the flesh. Batu Caves is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Be prepared to be climbing steps all day and exploring the depths of several caves – remember to bring your cameras!

STAY Alila Bangsar Hotel

You're in for an urban retreat when you book a room at the new Alila Bangsar. City life away from the city will never be this chic. With tasteful and modern decor, an amazing pool with a view, pool-side yoga and impeccable room service, it's great to get away from downtown life once in a while.

If you do just one thing... If sticking to central KL is your prerogative, then all you can is shop and eat to your heart' content. Go mall-hopping along Bukit Bintang and be impressed by the sheer amount of boutiques and shops in a major mall. Ready your cards, you'll be using it lot. When it comes to food, you'll be spoilt for choice with the in-mall restaurants or venture out to Jalan Alor for a taste of hawker life in Malaysia.

Pulau Ubin

Time-travel back to the golden kampung days at the beloved Pulau Ubin, a rustic island off the north-eastern coast of Singapore. Located just a 15-minute boat ride from mainland Singapore, you can realistically explore the whole island (about 10.2 square kilometres) in just a day.

EAT  Cheong Lian Yuen Coffee Shop

This unassuming dining establishment near the jetty is the perfect place to wind down after cycling or hiking around the island. Tuck into a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood with an ice cold beer before getting on the ferry back to the mainland. Popular dishes here are the pig trotter bee hoon, oysters omelette, salted egg sotong and mud crab with black pepper.

DRINK Ah Ma Drink Stall

Stop by this iconic drink stall, housed in a distinctive blue structure in Jalan Jelutong, for a fresh coconut. Don't forget to say hi to the friendly Madam Ong Ang Kui, who has been running the stall for more than 20 years.

DO Soak in everything Pulau Ubin has to offer

There's plenty to do: whether you choose to cycle its unpaved trails, hike up hills for stunning views of abandoned granite quarries, kayak the circumference of the island, or dust off your binoculars out to watch the kingfishers and bulbul birds that inhabit the tidal flats and mangroves.  For more in-depth info, read our guide to Pulau Ubin  here .

STAY Set up camp

While you can't stay in a hotel on Pulau Ubin, you can embrace the island's wilderness and set up a tent at one of the three campsites on the island: namely Jelutong, Mamam, and Endut Senin. Mamam Campsite boasts uninterrupted views of the sea, with Malaysia in the background.

If you do just one thing... Wander around Chek Jawa Wetlands, one of Singapore's richest ecosystems. A 1.1km boardwalk runs along the coast and mangrove area, giving visitors a chance to get closer to nature. After which, climb up a 20-metre-tall viewing tower for a 360-degree panorama of the island.

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru

Cross the causeway via public transport or in the comfort of your car from Woodlands Checkpoint and you'll find yourself in the heart of Johor Bahru. The JB immigration building is directly connected to City Square Mall, where you can find brands such as H&M and Uniqlo priced more affordable, thanks to the strong Singapore dollar. The surrounding area is also home to plenty of cool restaurants and cafés where you can while the day away.

EAT The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen

Out of all the cafés we've been to in Johor Bahru, The Replacement – Lodge and Kitchen undoubtedly serve the best food. Try the soft shell crab bao and the piping hot churros served with your choice of dip: there's salted caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella hazelnut and salted egg yolk to choose from.

DRINK Bev C

Johor Bahru isn't exactly known for its buzzy bar scene so swap the booze out for some caffeine instead. The house special at Bev C is the espresso ice cube: shots of coffee frozen into ice cubes served with some milk.

DO Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park

Just a half an hour drive from Johor Sentral lies Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. The family-friendly theme park is home to the Supersurf, a waterslide with six high-speed lanes.

STAY Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru

Conveniently situated within JB Sentral, Doubletree by Hilton makes for the perfect base for exploring the rest of the city. The modern hotel also comes equipped with a swimming pool and gym to work off those calories from all that café hopping.

If you do just one thing... Queue up for buns baked in a charcoal oven at Hiap Joo Bakery. The banana cake at this old-school institution is unbeatable too – we guarantee you won't stop at one slice.

Iskandar Puteri

Iskandar Puteri

Home to some of Southeast Asia’s most epic theme parks like Legoland Malaysia and the Hello Kitty Indoor Theme Park, the thriving city of Iskandar Puteri is well worth crossing the causeway for – especially with the kids in tow.

EAT Spice Grill

Leave the touristy eats at the theme parks behind and make the drive down to Puteri Harbour instead. There, you'll be greeted by a host of better options such as Spice Grill, a stylish Indian restaurant that also has Western offerings.

DRINK Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar

During happy hour, Rock Bottom Kitchen & Bar offers ridiculously affordable alcohol. Think $3 drinks and Bud Light draft, those are some truly rock-bottom prices.

DO Legoland Malaysia

Spend a day (or two) at Legoland Malaysia, the country's first international theme park. Ride the towering roller coasters or immerse yourself in a captivating 4D movie experience. Whichever the case, the impressive park promises to fascinate both children and adults alike.

STAY Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour

Aside from its incredibly convenient location, Hotel Jen at Puteri Harbour also offers a luxe infinity pool overlooking the glistening marina.

And if all that sounds a little too much for you, you can always park yourself at one of its three beaches and laze the day away.

Dine at Asia's first Michelin chef showcase experience. Every quarter, a different guest chef takes over the kitchen at Curate to present his or her award-winning menu.

DRINK Tanjong Beach Club

Dig your feet into the sand as you lounge by the beach with a tiki cocktail by Tanjong Beach Club. On Sunday, DJs turn the beachfront into a dance floor from the afternoon 'til late.

DO AJ Hackett

Here's one for the daredevils. Take a leap of faith by jumping from a height of 47m at AJ Hackett, Singapore's first bungy jumping facility.

STAY W Singapore Sentosa Cove

There are plenty of family-friendly hotels and luxe cabana stays on the island but for something sexier, we recommend making the trek out to W Singapore Sentosa Cove. Located in a quieter corner of the island, the hotel is perfect for couples looking for a little privacy.

If you do just one thing... Spend the day at Universal Studios Singapore, home to Battlestar Galactica and other fun rides that get the heart racing.

Batam

Take a ferry across the Singapore Strait to the charming Indonesian island of Batam. From serene beaches to an enthralling nightlight scene, this oft-overlooked island makes for a more than a decent getaway. Look past its sleazy reputation to unearth an array of exciting activities unique to the alluring destination.

EAT Golden Prawn 933

Head over to Golden Prawn 933 for a leisurely lunch that guarantees to satisfy. Serving up delectable plates of affordably priced freshly-caught seafood, the renowned restaurant proves that it’s worth the hype. Alternatively, join fellow tourists as they flock to the iconic A&W café for authentic root beer floats – creamy vanilla soft serve atop fizzy root beer.

DRINK Brewsky & Co

Pay a visit to one of the island’s reputable microbreweries. Brewsky & Co has delicious cocktails and great bar games as the cherry on top.

DO Batam Cable-ski Park

If you’re looking for adventure, choose from a variety of exhilarating water sports. In particular, opt to go jet skiing at Batam Cable-ski Park. Prices start from $25 for a one-hour pass but opt for the full-day pass that's priced at $65.

STAY Montigo Resorts The distinctive white and blue colour palette of Montigo Resorts’ façade affords you the luxury of experiencing a slice of Santorini without having to catch the dreaded 17-hour flight. If that wasn’t enough to warrant your stay, the posh villa-style resort boasts an exclusive private pool with unparalleled views of the surrounding Nongsa waters.

If you do just one thing… Relish a fragrant slice of one of Indonesia’s famed traditional specialties, Kueh Lapis – an indulgent layered cake – from the revered Layers Batam. Its range of conveniently located outlets include Nagoya Hill Mall and Batam Center Point.

Bintan

Long established as an upscale playground for the spendthrift, the idyllic archipelago is spoiled with pristine beaches and picturesque landscapes. Yet, hidden amidst an abundance of high-end luxury resorts are rustic old-school fishing villages that intrigue with their grit. It’s nice to know that a mere 50-minute ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal can transport you to a versatile and multi-faceted holiday destination like Bintan.

EAT Nasi Padang

Experience Indonesian-style Nasi Padang in its most authentic form as you tuck into the generous servings at Pujasera Food Centre’s Lamak Basamo or Rumah Makan Sederhana in Tanjung Pinang.

Touted as Bintan’s veteran nightclub, Silk promises a night to remember as you immerse yourself in live band music with a jazzy beverage in hand.

DO Air Adventure

Learn to fly at Air Adventure, a flying club at Lagoi Bay. But if all that sounds a little too ambitious for you then opt for a 20-minute ride on a seaplane that will accord you stunning views of the island. Getting to the Desaru Coast from Singapore is easy. It takes about two hours by car via the Causeway, about 90 minutes via bus, or an hour if you take the ferry (and then shuttle into the resort area). Once you're there, several complimentary shuttles can take you anywhere you need to go.

Aside from the beautiful beaches, the resort is known for golf with a full 18-hole course (designed by iconic players Ernie Els and Vijay Singh) along with three different nine-hole courses located along the coastline. Each course has its own clubhouse and extensive golf facilities including a golf training academy, driving range, and restaurants.

It's also a popular surfing and snorkeling spot, offering a range of water sports to visitors. For some wet family fun, the area is home to the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark .

Jonker Street, Malacca

Another top weekend getaway from Singapore is Malacca, a Malaysian beach city about three hours from Singapore by bus or car. On weekend nights, don't miss the Jonker Street Night Market , where all these cultural influences can be tasted in the form of street food.

There are also several national parks in the area offering mountain hiking. The clear, calm water also makes it one of the world's best SCUBA diving and snorkeling destinations.

Other destinations in Thailand like Bangkok , Phuket , or Chiang Mai are only a two- or three-hour flight from Changi Airport in Singapore.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple in Bali

Bali is perfect for luxury escapes and romantic getaways . The island combines spectacular scenery, wide beaches , big mountains, and, of course, a long history and fascinating culture.

There is a wide range of accommodations on the island, from cheap hotels to luxury resorts. For a quieter, more intimate experience, places like Sanur, Nusa Dua, and the coastal area of Candidasa are good choices.

Sentosa Island

One of the closest beach resorts to Singapore is only a 15-minute monorail (or cable car or Uber) ride away. Sentosa Island has several beach resorts, as well as family hotels and luxury getaway spots including an underwater hotel.

You can even walk to Sentosa using the Sentosa Boardwalk, some of which is an automated, moving sidewalk. More than just a route, the boardwalk has five lush, indigenous tropical landscapes only found in Singapore. It also gives you beautiful views across the bay, with lots of spots to stop for photos.

Sentosa Island is a great family destination and home to the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, as well as a few other amusement parks and water parks. Once you're here, there is a complimentary bus service and a beach shuttle to get you around. The Singapore Express monorail can also be used to get from one part of the island to the other.

There are also many free things to do in Sentosa. Aside from enjoying the beach, you can walk on the Fort Siloso Skywalk. The 181-meter (about 600-foot) skywalk is 11 stories above the forest. You get a scenic view of the trees and the harbor. The site is also quite historic, Fort Siloso was built by the British in the 19th century to guard the entrance to Singapore harbor. You can also visit the fort itself, which is now a museum and educational site.

As if to compete with the diamond pagoda, the Sule Pagoda is covered in pure gold. These pagodas are joined by Buddhist temples, interesting British colonial architecture, and a constantly increasing number of modern skyscrapers.

The big appeal here is the rainforests and sheer natural beauty. There are also stunning coastal areas. Both are filled with a variety of indigenous natural flora and fauna. There are a lot of options for outdoor activities and adventure sports, too.

Stunning Beaches from Singapore: Neighbouring Islands to Hit For A Short Weekend Getaway

Beach Asia

PUBLISHED February 27th, 2016 04:11 pm | UPDATED July 27th, 2020 01:01 pm

Ah, Singapore – we have so many excellent travel options , so many wonderful beaches within our region.

But the reality is, when it comes to booking that desperately needed beach getaway ; suddenly because of the constraints of work (you’ve already used up all your leave), connecting flights a.k.a. what!? two flights just to get there,  or just plain laziness i.e. you don’t have time to plan a trip, it doesn’t seem so easy to come up with that quick fix beach break after all.

Or does it?

Well now, you don’t have to work out how long it will take to get there and if it is doable in that precious little time you have. Because we’ve done it for you in our round up of 12 easy beach escapes from Singapore.

[button color=”blue” size=”normal” alignment=”none” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-9211920-13787533″]Luxury villa rentals available on Elite Havens[/button]

Bintan, Indonesia

Some may not count this as travel but hey, it is in another country…and it’s a good place to start, for the uber-lazy. Rolling into a taxi, then a little jaunt by ferry from Tanah Merah over to what strictly counts as Indonesia definitely takes the hassle out of travel. Although it’s very much a stay-in-your-resort type of break, if all you want to do is starfish on a beach and stare into thin air, then we won’t try to convince you otherwise!

Get there : 1 hour ferry ride from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. For more information see the Bintan Resort Ferries website here .

Boracay, Philippines

Okay, we hear you. Boracay is a bit lower down on the easy stakes but once you get there, it’s definitely worth it. It can be a little tourist over-laden in parts, especially if you choose to stay on Station 1 – but the other side of Boracay is sublime beaches with soft silky sand, crystal clear water, and not a soul to share it with. Thus, we recommend renting a small boat to take your snorkelling around the island, you might just stumble upon a beautiful, serene stretch of beach like we did. Plus, we feel that the kind hospitality and warm welcomes you get everywhere makes the arduous journey totally worth it.

Get there : There are actually a number of ways, via Manila , Cebu and to two airports- Caticlan & Kalibo. While actually travel times depend on flight timings, you’re looking at about 5 hours flight time and reasonable fares with either Cebu Pacific Air or Tiger Air . See our comprehensive travel guide to Boracay  here for more information.

Hoi An, Vietnam

Hoi An

This delightfully quaint town on Vietnam’s coast is one of the prettiest we have ever seen. Dating from the 15th century, its buildings, narrow streets, carved wooden shop houses, and the feel to the place definitely warrants exploration. With a great selection of restaurants and intriguing little shops, you can easily while a few days away here. Flights take you in to Danang and the journey from the airport to Hoi An feels like one long sandy beach lined with hotels to accommodate every budget. To feel like you’re having a true beach holiday, we recommend hotel/beach time in the day, and Hoi An in the evenings when night falls and the lanterns are lit. Magical.

Get there : 2 hours 45 mins by air and a reasonable air fare on  SilkAir .

Phuket, Thailand

There’s something so reassuringly trashy about Phuket! Leave your preconceptions at home and embrace your wilder side at Suzy Wong’s and the various mind-boggling cabaret shows you can catch around town. And sure, you can look further afield and find quiet, untouched spots, beautiful nature, with a host of accommodation options: there’s a serious trend at the moment for luxe rentable villas, so you can do it in luxury and style. But we say, when in Phuket, go wild, party, drink and misbehave!

Get there : 1 hour 30 mins by air and a reasonable air fare thanks to local low cost airlines like Tiger Air and Jetstar .

Rawa, Malaysia

Rawa

One of our favourite weekend escapes: arrive by boat on a Friday evening, take off your shoes as you reach the shore – and we bet you won’t put them back on again until the weekend’s over and it’s time to head back to Singapore. If you’re looking to get away with a group of friends, this is the spot. Be sure to book in advance for the simple but functional resorts, which offer plenty of activities including snorkeling, kayaking, and beach volleyball. Or simply laze on the beach and wait for the smell of the gorgeous BBQ dinner to wake you up. Mmmmmmmm.

Get there : Car/bus to Mersing then ferry to Rawa. Most resorts arrange the entire trip from Singapore, which takes around 4 hours.

Krabi, Thailand

Krabi is probably our favourite place in South Thailand. It’s less crowded than Phuket, the people are nicer, there’s fewer tourists…and it’s just generally a more pleasant place to be. It’s a great escape from Singapore if you’re planning something of a detox/health/rejuvenation vacation. Spend the days doing yoga, rock climbing, swimming in the sea, or just lazing about and eating all the delicious Thai food.

Get there : 1 hour 30 mins and a reasonable air fare thanks to local low cost airline  Tiger Air .

Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi

Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands on Malaysia’s west coast and so to make the best of a trip there, we highly recommend stepping off dry land and going for a sail. The huge craggy outcrops and mini islands are awe-inspiring and the turquoise waters beckon you in for a dip. A great combination of picturesque paddy fields, fierce-looking jungle, mangrove swamps and sweeping beaches, make Langkawi a good adventuring destination, but if you’re the lazier kind of holidaymaker, simply pick a sun-bed and admire the view!

Get there : 1 hour 25 minutes by air and a reasonable air fare thanks to low cost airline AirAsia .

Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok

Whether you stay in Lombok, or use it as a stopover to the beautiful, backpacker haven of a diving destination that is the Gili Islands, it is quite noticeably a more sedate Indonesian island experience. Hugely different to tourist-driven Bali, Lombok is Indonesia on Valium…about 50 years ago. Less frantic, less bustling and as result untarnished by massive overdevelopment and international investment, Lombok is untamed, quiet, natural beauty. If you need a Starbucks and selection of restaurants on your vacation, avoid. If you want to get back to basics…Lombok could be perfect for you.

Get there : 2 hours 15 mins by air and a reasonable air fare thanks to SilkAir .

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is not just a fantastic place for trekking and hiking, but also a place for beach-lovers. Just off the coastline in the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park is an diverse array of five picturesque islands, surrounded by marvellous jewel blue water teeming with life and colourful corals. Get out of the city and go island-hopping, snorkelling and diving in Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan and Pulau Mamutik – head to Mantanani Beach to spot some dugongs or Tempurung Beach, where you can simply chill under the natural shade of coconut trees along the shoreline.

Get there : 2 hours 30 mins by air and a reasonable air fare thanks to low cost airlines  AirAsia .

Bali, Indonesia

island trips from singapore

The thing about Bali is…it has everything you could possibly want from a vacation. Whether you’re seeking a cultural adventure; are more of an outdoorsy type (see Globo Surf for more tips) and want to surf, swim, and leap over volcanoes; are a beach bunny looking to get your tan on; are a foodie and want to enjoy a fantastic array of restaurants; or just want to party like a loon in a beautiful setting; Bali has it all, and Seminyak is the perfect base. From budget accommodation to full blown luxury, every culinary whim catered for, and shopping to make the girls swoon and many a boyfriend or husband sigh, if you like a little hustle, bustle and glamour with your vacation, this is the spot for you.

Get there : 2 hours 30 minutes by air and a reasonable air fair thanks to low cost airlines like Tiger Air and Jetstar .

Sibu Island, Malaysia

Sibu

Another idyllic island getaway off the East Coast of Malaysia, which some might say is pretty much interchangeable with Rawa, being located within the same Marine Park. You can expect more or less the same offering from the journey over there, to the super snorkelling, and of course the beaches with soft golden sand, not forgetting that wonderful feeling you get when getting away from it all for a weekend, somehow blissfully feels like a week.

Get there : Access to Sibu Island is via the small town of Tanjung Leman, about 72 km south of Mersing. Shuttle buses are available directly from Singapore.

Tioman Island, Malaysia

Tioman

Two words – paradise island. Sparkling blue waters, white sandy beaches, lush greenery, and amazing snorkeling and scuba diving that will leave you besotted by the sea. Plus, this beautiful island off the East Coast of Malaysia is one of the few places that hasn’t yet been spoilt by swarms of tourists. If you need to truly get away from it all, there is no better place. Need we say more?

Get there : Car/bus to Mersing, then a ferry to Tioman. Be warned that ferries to can take up to 3 hours and are dependent on tide levels, making it a significantly less convenient trip.

5 Islands near Singapore

Singapore’s best island escapes.

These islands near Singapore are all less than an hour away from the city (some are literally just minutes away), meaning you can easily swap the concrete jungle for an actual one, along with miles of soft sand. They offer a convenient getaway from the big city when you just want to escape it all, but still be within touching distance of a Starbucks and 7-Eleven.

From large, developed islands where locals happily spend an entire long weekend (and you’ll need your passport), to tiny, almost deserted tropical islands just a short 20-minute ferry hop from Singapore , here are our favorite islands near Singapore.

  • Sentosa Island

island trips from singapore

Time from Singapore: 5-10 minutes How to get there: Take the MRT to Harbourfront station then change to the Sentosa Express from the 3rd floor in VivoCity mall. What to do: Ride the coasters at Universal Studios, eat, drink and play on the sand at Tanjong Beach Club.

You don’t have to be Robinson Crusoe to explore Sentosa. This island is so close to the mainland you can even walk across the footbridge (for free or $1 depending on the time) – or just take the Sentosa Express that connects to the MRT. Head to Universal Studios or one of the many other big-name attractions here and you’ll probably feel like you’ve not escaped the mainland and its commercialisation at all. However, there are some pretty impressive beaches to be explored at Tanjong and Siloso. Hit up Tanjong for its beach bars, or try Siloso if you’re with the family and want to play beach activities such as soccer and volleyball.

Bintan Island (Indonesia)

island trips from singapore

Time from Singapore:  50 minutes How to get there:  Take a ferry from Tanah Merah or Harbourfront ferry terminal in Singapore. A round trip costs about $30-$50.  What to do:  Take a ‘staycation’ in one of the many resorts, rent a car and drive around the island checking at all the seaside enclaves, chill out on the beach, temple hop.

Part of Riau Archipelago, this is the second closest Indonesian island to Singapore, behind the similarly-named Batam Island just next door. Bintan is less than an hour away from Singapore by ferry, and the developed island is best known for its excellent lineup of white sand beaches and range of water-sport activities. Day or weekend trippers should definitely check out the famous Banyan Tree Temple or take a stroll around Tanjung Pinang, the island’s quaint and friendly capital.

St. john’s island.

island trips from singapore

Time from Singapore:  20 minutes How to get there:  Ferry from the World Trade Center or Marina South Pier (around S$18, twice daily with additional service on the week and public holidays).  What to do:  swim in the lagoon, take a picnic on the beach, explore the winding jungle tracks on foot or bike.

This is one of Singapore’s most popular outer-lying islands (other than Sentosa, of course). There are a few decent beaches for swimming, changing rooms, toilets, picnic spots and shops. You can also rent a bungalow for a night on the island and make the most of the tranquillity when all the tourists go home. St John’s is also well known for its lagoons, which are cut off from the sea by spits of sand around the perimeter of the island, so bring a lilo and sunblock.

Lazarus Island

island trips from singapore

Time from Singapore:  25 minutes How to get there:  Ferry from World Trade Center or Marina South Pier to St. John’s Island (around S$18, twice daily with additional service on the weekend and public holidays). Then walk across the purposely built concrete walkway for free.  What to do:  As little as possible – relax on the beach or take a dip if you’re feeling particularly energetic.

Some say that Lazarus Island has the most idyllic beach in the whole of Singapore – yet many visitors to the more developed St John’s Islands don’t bother making the short excursion over the bridge to check it out. For those that do, there’s not much here, but the long stretch of unspoilt white sand, fringed nicely by palm trees and tropical jungle in the background all make it worth the walk.

island trips from singapore

Time from Singapore:  5 minutes How to get there:  Take a small boat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal (around $2 for one-way). What to do there:  Explore the wetlands on foot or by bike, picnics on the beach, birdwatching.

Aside from Sentosa, the most popular destination for day-trippers that isn’t on Singapore’s main island is Pulau Ubin. This small strip of land is sandwiched between Singapore and Malaysia, and is best-known for its wetlands area that makes a great playground for adventure seekers. As well as the abundance of greenery, there are also some nice bike trails – and the beaches here are pretty nice too.

8 singapore islands for easy day trips.

15th January 2023 by Expat Living 6 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/island-trips-off-singapore-island-hopping/

Want to feel like you’re on holiday? These Singapore islands are perfect day trips  – some are accessible by boat or ferries, and others you can walk to. It’s a great day out and you can even stay overnight on some of them. Here are some tips on how to get there and what you’ll need to take.

#1 St John’s Island Overnight Stay

Situated just over 6km south of Singapore, St John’s Island is a pretty place to find peace and quiet, and some interesting history. This Singapore island is also well known for its flora and fauna.

Getting there: Take a 30-minute ferry ride from Marina South Pier. (You can buy your tickets on the spot at the pier.) The return ferry ride costs $18 for adults and $12 for children (one to 12 years). The afternoon ferry may stop off at Kusu Island on the return home.

Singapore islands trips

What to do: Lay your picnic mats by the beach for a leisurely picnic while the kids build sandcastles. Walk off those calories by taking your little ones exploring in the mangroves; you’ll find an abundance of marine life, including hermit crabs and sea urchins. Book two months in advance (at the Sentosa Islander Counter, Level 3, VivoCity) to stay overnight in the bungalows or camps.

Tips: Don’t forget to take food, lots of water, books and toys – there are no kiosks or shops on the island.

#2 Lazarus Island day trips

Another of Singapore’s Southern Islands group, Lazarus is just a bridge away from St John’s Island.

Getting there: Hop on a ferry to St John’s and take the 15-minute walk across the link bridge to the island.

What to do: If you’re looking a little more peace and quiet than St John’s, which can get crowded, this is a great place to go for a picnic, to build sandcastles on the secluded beach, or take a dip in the clear water. With a laidback vibe, the island is generally untouched and offers one of the best nearby escapes to nature from Singapore.

Lazarus Island beach island hopping Singapore islands trips

Tips: Like on St John’s Island, there are no stores selling food and drinks here, so pack whatever is necessary. The nearest toilet is about a five-minute walk from the beach.

#3 Kusu Island day trips

Kusu Island is located less than an hour away from mainland Singapore and is especially popular with devotees who travel to the island’s renowned temple for annual pilgrimages.

Getting there: Take a 45-minute ferry ride from Marina South Pier. You will stop off at St John’s Island before reaching Kusu.

What to do: Explore the small island’s surprisingly rich culture and heritage, and visit its sacred sites including the Da Bo Gong Temple and the three Malay kramats or shrines (you’ll need to climb 152 steps to reach them!). While you’re there, pay a visit to the wishing well near the temple. Pack a picnic basket or prepare a barbecue for a relaxing afternoon meal. Keep the kids occupied and take them to see turtles at the Turtle Sanctuary or have a refreshing swim.

Tips: You might want to avoid the months of September to November as this is the busiest time for the island’s annual pilgrimage.

Kusu Island hopping trips

#4 Sisters’ Islands walks

Boasting rich reefs and marine life, the Sisters’ Islands are part of Singapore’s first marine park. They’re also home to some long-tailed macaques.

Getting there: Charter a private ferry through Singapore Island Cruise. Contact them for information and rates. Departing from Marina South Pier, you’ll reach the islands in around 15 minutes.

What to do : Go on a guided walk hosted by National Parks in the cool morning breeze and your kids will be able to see (and even touch some) sea creatures like starfishes, octopuses and clams. Tours are conducted twice a month and are free of charge. After a morning of learning, find a shady spot to enjoy your picnic lunch.

Tips: Wear covered shoes so you can easily navigate the beach during the tours.

#5 Pulau Ubin day trips

Popular with cyclists, this rustic island is home to some of Singapore’s last kampongs. It is located off the northeast coast, close to Changi Airport. Be sure to bring along your hat, sun cream, water and insect repellent.

Getting there: Take a 15-minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal. It costs $2.50 per person, though you may have to wait some time for the boat to fill with enough people.

What to do: Rent bikes for the family and take off on a self-guided tour of the island’s trails and kampongs. From mountain bikes and tandem bikes to tricycles and bikes with side carts for the kids to ride along in, you’ll be able to find one to suit your family. If you prefer your own bike, bring it along, but take note of the extra $3 fee for the bumboat ride. The terrain is generally manageable both for bike and on foot. Take a rest at a quarry and enjoy the serenity. Fuel up by picking up some drinks and old school snacks at the many shops and cafes on the main drag. Before leaving, make a trip to Chek Jawa (about 3km from the jetty) to explore its wetlands and learn about its rich marine life and biodiversity. There’s even a hardcore mountain bike course for keen cyclists.

Tips: The island has no ATMs, so be sure to bring sufficient cash!

Pulau Ubin island hopping trips off Singapore

#6 Coney Island walk

Located off Punggol, Coney Island is one of Singapore’s newest nature destinations. The island boasts a variety of habitats, including lush forests and mangroves. It was undergoing some work, so check before you go..

Getting there: Walk onto the island through connecting bridges at either the East entrance at Lorong Halus or the West entrance at Punggol Promenade Park Connector.

What to do: Burn off some energy at the Casuarina Exploratory where kids can hop and jump over uprooted trees and stumps. Sadly the island’s resident Brahman bull passed away a few years ago, but you will at least have the chance to see a wide variety of bird species and plenty of interesting flora.

Tips: Wear long pants, shoes and apply insect repellent to prevent bites. Watch out for wild boars and some wild dogs. The rugged terrain may be a little tough for younger ones to navigate.

#7 Pulau Hantu overnight stays

Made up of two small islands, Pulau Hantu Besar and Pulau Hantu Kechil, Pulau Hantu is located south of Singapore. Literally meaning “island of ghosts”, this serene spot is known for its rich coral reefs and beautiful beaches.

Getting there: Unlike for most of the other islands, there are no daily ferry services to Pulau Hantu, but you can privately charter a boat from West Coast or Marina South Pier.

What to do: Explore the lovely beaches and lagoons on the island. Set up a picnic lunch by one of the shady beaches and cool off with a dip in the water. Check out the mangroves and try to spot some of the wide variety of marine life.

Tips: If you want to enjoy the island for a little longer, you can camp over for the night. You’ll need to get a permit from the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) for this.

#8 Pulau Semakau tour

Also located south of the main island of Singapore, Pulau Semakau houses Singapore’s first offshore landfill. You may be surprised that it also boasts loads of rich flora and fauna.

Getting there: Book a tour with NEA . It includes the ferry ride as well as a guided tour of the incineration plants and landfill.

What to do: Wondering where all your trash goes? Find out more during the tour of the waste management operations and facilities on the island. While you’re there, enjoy a guided intertidal walk and check out the island’s marine animals and plants such as crabs and sea grasses.

Tips: Be sure to book your tour in advance – we recommend at least three weeks before you go.

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, easy short trips from singapore – no flights required.

One of the many advantages of living in Singapore is its proximity to a myriad of exotic getaways that can be easily reached in just a few hours for a reasonable price. Even better, some of these places don’t require you to get on a plane, which cuts down the costs even further.

Having lived in Singapore for over a decade, I’ve definitely taken advantage of this. I have been exploring quite a few of these places myself!

Telunas Private Island

What is considered a short weekend trip?

There are many places that can be considered a weekend getaway from Singapore , but for the sake of this post I want to highlight trips with the following requirements:

  • Must be outside of Singapore
  • Does not require getting on a flight
  • Can be reached in under 6 hours door-to-door from Singapore
  • Places that I have personally visited , so that I can give my own honest feedback about it!

There are not many destinations that can tick those requirements. In fact, it filtered the list down to only eight places.

So without further ado, here are the places that I think can truly be considered a short getaway from Singapore:

  • Telunas Private Island in Riau Islands, Indonesia
  • Nikoi Island in Riau Islands, Indonesia
  • Bintan Island in Riau Islands, Indonesia
  • Batam Island in Riau Islands, Indonesia
  • Joyo Island in Riau Islands, Indonesia
  • Desaru Coast in Malaysia
  • Rawa Island in Malaysia
  • Malacca in Malaysia
  • Tioman Island in Malaysia

1. Telunas Private Island in Indonesia

Telunas Private Island

When it comes to places to visit in Riau Islands, most people would think about Batam and Bintan Islands. But if you truly want an exclusive getaway that is not crowded and doesn’t feel like you’re even remotely close to Singapore, you should consider Telunas Private Island .

Telunas is a small resort located on a tiny private island off Sugi Island. It’s actually only 50 km south of Singapore, but when you’re here, you will forget Singapore even exists. On this tiny island, there are only 15 overwater villas by the beach and 5 couples-only villas on the hills. However, it is still close enough to the main island that you won’t run out of things to do!

4. Batam Island in Indonesia

At the Infinity Pool of Montigo Resorts Nongsa

Batam is perhaps the most popular weekend getaway from Singapore. It is so close to Singapore, you can actually still see the skyline of Singapore when you’re in the northern part of Batam. Unlike its neighboring island Bintan, Batam is more known for eating and shopping. However, it does still have some nice resorts as well.

➡️ For more information: Read my experience of going to Batam for a weekend from Singapore

🛌 Where to stay in Batam: Montigo Resorts Nongsa

⛴️ How to get to Batam from Singapore: Take the ferry from Harborfront Centre to Nongsapura or Batam Center

⏰ Travel time from Singapore: ~3-4 hours door-to-door from Singapore depending on where you will be staying in Batam

🌞 Best time to visit Batam: February to August

5. Joyo Island in Indonesia

Joyo Island in Indonesia

Joyo is a small private island off Bintan Island in Indonesia. Accommodation in Joyo is designed to be shared, so it is better to go as a group. In fact, it is possible to book a whole island! Joyo Island can accommodate up to 45 people at a time. I went to Joyo as part of a group of around 20 people, and we had a blast. We pretty much had the island to ourselves.

🛌 Where to stay in Joyo: Because Joyo is such a small island, there is no other accommodation option aside from Joyo Resorts itself

⛴️ How to get to Joyo Island from Singapore: Take a ferry to Bintan, then take a car to the jetty and a boat to the island

⏰ Travel time to Joyo from Singapore: ~4 hours door-to-door from Singapore

🌞 Best time to visit Joyo: Good all year round

6. Desaru Coast in Malaysia

Desaru Coast Anantara

Desaru was already a well-known beach getaway in Malaysia that can be easily reached from Singapore. I visited Desaru in 2010 and found that, back then, it was a pretty average destination. However, in 2019, the town received an update with the opening of four new resorts on Desaru Coast, which gives it a renewed appeal.

➡️ Want to know more? You can read my experience of going to Desaru Coast for a weekend here

🛌 Where to stay in Desaru: Anantara Desaru Coast

🚗 How to get to Desaru from Singapore: Take the ferry from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Desaru Coast or book a private transfer from Singapore to go directly to your accommodation ( Crossing the border at Woodlands Checkpoint )

⏰ Travel time to Desaru from Singapore: ~3 hours door-to-door from Singapore, depending on traffic at the Singapore-Malaysia border

🌞 Best time to visit Desaru: March to September. June and August are peak months.

7. Rawa Island in Malaysia

Rawa Island in Malaysia

Back when I was in my 20s, I used to go to Rawa frequently with a group of friends. The first time I went to Rawa, I couldn’t believe just how soft and white the sand was, and how the water around the island was clear and turquoise in color. It felt like I was living in a postcard! In total, I have gone to Rawa three times since ten years ago.

🛌 Where to stay on Rawa Island: There are two accommodations – Rawa Island Resort and Alang’s Rawa . Rawa Island Resort is better suited for families or couples looking for nicer accommodation, while Alang’s is more economical and better for younger people.

⛴️ How to get to Rawa Island from Singapore: Take a private transfer to Mersing ( Crossing the border at Woodlands Checkpoint ), then take a local boat straight to Rawa Island

⏰ Travel time to Rawa from Singapore: ~4-5 hours door-to-door from Singapore, depending on traffic at the Singapore-Malaysia border

🌞 Best time to visit Rawa: Rawa is affected by Monsoon. Although the resort is open all year long, the best time to visit is March to October.

8. Malacca in Malaysia

Malacca in Malaysia

Malacca is a well-known weekend destination from Singapore due to its proximity to the Singapore-Malaysia border. It is so close to Singapore that you can even do this as a day trip. We went via bus early in the morning and came back at night, though I felt it was a little too rushed.

Malacca is popular for its food scene and street market. I was also told by a friend who visited recently this year that it now has a budding cocktail bar scene!

🛌 Where to stay in Malacca: Baba House Malacca

🚗 How to get to Malacca from Singapore: Bus or Private transfer directly to Malacca ( Crossing the border at Woodlands Checkpoint )

⏰ Travel time to Malacca from Singapore: ~4 hours door-to-door from Singapore, depending on traffic at the Singapore-Malaysia Border

🌞 Best time to visit Malacca: September – October

Tioman Island

Tioman is best known for diving , especially for beginners to get their certifications. The waters around Tioman tend to be clear with good visibility, and there are plenty of beginner-friendly dive sites. I personally did my Open Water and Advanced PADI certifications in Tioman, and I have gone back to the island twice since then for leisure diving. If you are not a diver – there are plenty of other activities you can do in Tioman, such as snorkeling and biking around the island.

🛌 Where to stay on Tioman Island: Japamala Resorts

Fancy a dose of Vitamin Sea but don’t want to venture too far away from Singapore? Luckily, the Little Red Dot is just a stone’s throw away from some of the world’s best islands, where you’ll find crystal clear waters, luxe resorts and plenty of holiday activities to keep the kids busy. Check out this list of nearby islands for your dream getaway, the next time the urge to retreat from civilisation hits:

1. Lazarus Island

If day-tripping is totally up your alley, then make a stop over the weekend at Lazarus Island. It’s one of Singapore’s southern islands and has gorgeous white sand beaches, calm waters and minimal crowding. Pack a picnic and your swimwear for an afternoon by the blue waters. The beach is also perfect for a dose of water sports and games like kite-flying, beach volleyball, snorkelling and more. And if you’re a cat lover, pack a few kitty treats too, as the island is home to many furry felines who love a scratch behind the ears.

islands from singapore - Lazarus Island

Getting here is easy enough – hop on a ferry from either Sentosa Cove or Marina South Pier to Lazarus Seringat Jetty with the express Marina South Ferries , or take a ferry to St John’s Island and use the walking causeway between the two isles to get to Lazarus Island.

Lazarus Island is uninhabited, but as of April 2023, you can rent one of the tiny homes, also known as Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island . These extremely compact, trailer-like homes are perfect if you’d like a weekend of off-the-grid living. These little homes are air-conditioned and include a mini kitchen, a bed for two adults and a sofa bed for little ones, as well as biodegradable shampoo and body wash.

islands from singapore - Lazarus Island tiny away escape home

Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island is completely eco-friendly; it uses solar energy as its main power source, is made using recycled plastics and wood fibre, is durable and even has a high-tech recycling system that composts food waste in 24 hours.

2. Cempedak Private Island

If an adults-only paradise is that you’re after, check out the luxurious bamboo villas and lush greenery of Cempedak Private Island , 9km off the east coast of Bintan, Indonesia. From Singapore, jump on a Bintan-bound ferry from Tanah Merah ferry terminal, traverse the island for about an hour by car, then transfer to a private speedboat. The journey takes about three hours, but it’s well worth it for the five-star hospitality, stylish eco-living and delicious all-you-can-eat meals.

Cempedak_Atmospheric singapore islands silverkris

Spread over 17 hectares, the resort is home to an array of wildlife such as otters, hornbills, monitor lizards and pangolins; a small but dedicated and friendly staff; and, thankfully, not much else.

Its bamboo architecture is the star of the show – New Zealand-born architect Miles Humphreys, together with Balinese architects Chiko Wirahadi and Ketut Indra Saputra, both experts in bamboo, built the villas using this sustainable “super material”, along with recycled teak and rubber wood and cogon grass for the roofs.

island trips from singapore

The villas are available either on the beachfront or perched atop jungle-festooned ridges with stunning views of the sea. Shaped like curvaceous conch shells, the two-storey, open-air villas boast luxe features such as stone ensuite bathrooms, private infinity pools, organic cotton sheets and speaker systems. And while they’re completely wall-less and without air conditioning, the spacious 150m² floor plans are a true study in smart design – natural ventilation works a treat, and the sea breeze flows throughout the villas.

Meals are mostly enjoyed at the resort’s airy hilltop restaurant (private picnics can also be arranged), which comes with 180-degree views and private dining pods. The menu changes daily and spotlights the region’s rich local produce – think barbecued seafood sourced from local markets and organic veggies grown in the resort’s garden – while also putting a modern spin on Indonesian flavours. Have a nightcap at the bar, which has a fine collection of aged rums and top-notch craft cocktails.

island trips from singapore

Don’t miss their spa treatment, and for a real treat, request for the staff to arrange it to coincide with sunset. The treatment rooms overlook the sea, and the experience of being pampered against the sound of waves is unbeatable. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a hidden path from the spa that takes you to the water’s edge. There, you can lay on the flat rocks and soak in the sun at your leisure. What heaven.

3. Rawa Island

For a slightly more modest, yet equally secluded island getaway, look to Rawa Island in Malaysia. This coral island in Johor’s Mersing district is relatively small and only has two resorts. Getting here begins with a bus or car journey from Singapore to Mersing, before you hop on a speedboat to your chosen resort.

islands from Singapore - Rawa Island Resort

At Alang’s Rawa , weekdays pass blissfully, as the peaceful oasis is filled with families looking for a break from the big city within one of six different types of accommodations. The restaurant here is known for its simple but delicious nosh, and come nightfall, you’ll find beachside tables lit by flaming lanterns to accompany the menu.

However, note that children under age 16 aren’t allowed on weekends, as Alang’s Rawa transforms into party central, with Saturday night barbecues, exciting nightlife and a to-die-for cocktail list made with fresh local fruits, juices and spices.

islands from Singapore - Alang's Rawa

Rawa Island Resort is the place to be if you’re in the mood for water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking, scuba diving and even island hopping. There are four chalet and bungalows to choose from, and the room packages include three meals daily with sea transfer to and from Mersing.

Want to really treat yourself to stellar views of Rawa Island? Take a leisurely hike to the top of the island to see the surrounding islands and the South China Sea. Unwind with a massage afterwards, or enjoy a spa treatment that makes use of fresh local ingredients.

4. Pulau Ubin

This boomerang-shaped Singapore island escape is situated off the northeast coast of Singapore, just $4 (add $2 if you’re bringing your own bicycle) for a 15-minute bumboat ride from the mainland. The jumping-off point from  Pulau Ubin is Changi Ferry Point Terminal – there’s an excellent hawker centre around the area, dishing up some of the country’s best nasi lemak (coconut rice with condiments), leafy cafés and other great eateries . There are no set times for bumboat departures, as these only set off when there are 12 passengers for the journey (if you don’t want to wait for other passengers to make up the numbers, simply cough up the difference.)

Setting foot on Ubin is like stepping inside a time warp, back to when skyscrapers and expressways were non-existent in the country. Some of the island’s earliest inhabitants were the seafaring Orang Laut people and indigenous Malays of Javanese descent, though Ubin was later settled by Chinese families and Malay fishing communities.

chek jawa boardwalk singapore islands

Walking tracks and cycling trails lace around the island – you’ll cover more terrain on the latter. Bikes can be rented near the end of the arrival pier for around $10 a day, and you’ll be able to enjoy more of Ubin’s rustic, charming villages, shrines, thick jungle and pretty lakes created from old granite mining sites.

On the eastern end of the island, you’ll find the Chek Jawa wetlands , home to a plethora of wildlife including kingfishers, snakes, fish, wild boars, otters and plenty of marine creatures. A boardwalk juts over the mangroves, letting visitors see the marine life up close.

There aren’t any resorts, hotels or lodges if you’d like to spend the night. Instead, pack your own camping gear for a night under the stars within the allocated camping grounds – just watch out for the wild boars and keep your food stowed away safely before turning in for the evening.

This large, 1,173km 2 island (almost double the size of Singapore) may be part of Indonesia’s Riau archipelago, but the Lion City is regarded as its easiest access point – just an hour-long high-speed ferry ride away from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

While Bintan is a popular Singapore island escape for a weekend, most visitors don’t venture outside of Lagoi, where the sprawling Bintan Resorts property is located. It spans sweeping golf courses, family-friendly beach resorts and manicured luxury villas.

Bintan evening Singapore islands

But there’s plenty to explore further afield – the southeastern coast has gained a reputation as a first-rate dive destination, particularly for beginner divers, with its good visibility, shallow 10 to 15-metre reefs and an array of hard corals and marine life such as moray eels, cuttlefish and pufferfish.

The Sanchaya Bintan Island escape

However, if you’re looking to take it easy, there are high-end resorts where rest and relaxation are elevated to art forms. Back in Lagoi, The Sanchaya – a luscious, 10-hectare beachfront estate built on a former coconut plantation – dials up the luxury several notches, boasting a gorgeous stretch of powder-white sand and even its own VIP lounge at the ferry terminal.

The 29 villas and suites are all elegantly furnished – some are colonial-inspired with teak floors and marble bathroom fittings, and others feature Thai-style pitched roofs and Khmer antiques – and come with Bang & Olufsen televisions and sound systems, wine fridges and iPads. The pièce de résistance, however, is the 50-metre infinity pool – perfect for relaxing in before feasting on The Sanchaya’s excellent menus.

6. Pulau Tengah

This privately owned island in Johor, Malaysia is a 20- to 30-minute boat ride from Mersing. Although small, you’ll find eight sandy beaches and some of the country’s clearest waters dotted with rock formations. There’s only one resort on the island – Batu Batu – and it’s built to resemble a small Malay village.

Guests are welcome to stay in any of the 22 villas, which are made from tropical hardwoods and blend into the uninhabited island’s rustic surroundings. The villages face either the sea or the jungle, guaranteeing privacy and a tranquil environment for couples or families.

island trips from singapore

Spacious bathrooms feature stonewashed bathtubs and showers, and guests can dine on European or Asian dishes at the restaurant and bar. With activities like snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, island trekking and diving on offer, there’s plenty of excitement here.

Batu Batu also runs several conservation initiatives, with its most popular one being the Tengah Island Conservation programme, which includes sea turtle conservation efforts.

7. Sugi Island

For a holiday that will truly take you off the grid and give you time away from your tech devices, head to remote Sugi Island , which, like Batam and Bintan, is part of Indonesia’s Riau archipelago. The two resorts on the island, Telunas Beach Resort and Telunas Private Island , are both free of Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and televisions – letting you truly focus on yourself while you’re there.

Getting here may seem like a hassle, requiring a ferry ride from Harbourfront Centre Ferry Terminal to Sekupang Ferry Terminal followed by another cruise on a local ferry to the resort. However, the total travelling time is no more than three hours from Singapore. Upon arrival, gracious hosts will direct you to your spacious villa, which comes with a panoramic view of the water.

Telunas Private island rooms singapore islands

These resorts encourage you to focus on yourself and nature, so offerings like spa treatments, water sports and visits to untapped natural sights are part and parcel of your stay. For meals, take your pick from either Western or local cuisine.

Initially a project started by like-minded eco-conscious friends in 2004, Telunas continues to be committed to sustainable practices, supporting the local community through a myriad of initiatives such as preserving endangered species and offering scholarships to residents of the neighbouring islands.

islands from Singapore - Batam

While its slightly seedy reputation might precede it, Batam is an island escape that’s just a 45-minute ferry ride away from Singapore. What many might not know is that it has a sophisticated side that prioritises luxurious relaxation as well as adventure and sports. The island is also the perfect starting point for further exploration of the Riau islands, especially for divers.

On Batam’s eastern side, you’ll find Montigo Resorts Nongsa – the gleaming white modern villas dot the coast and face the rolling waters of the South China Sea. To reach the resort, take a 10-minute shuttle bus ride upon disembarking at Nongsapura Ferry Terminal.

Since the resort is secluded from the main part of the island where the bulk of tourists congregate, a stay here guarantees peace and privacy with the option to reap nature’s benefits. From bike tours and mangrove cruises to batik painting, dirt track racing and much more, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the quieter side of the island.

Montigo resorts Tadd's pool singapore islands

If you’ve come for a respite from the stresses of everyday living, the spa offers tailored experiences where you can fully rejuvenate your mind and body. On the other hand, thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline pumping with some target practice – go old-school with a bow and arrow at the archery range, or try a state-of-the-art Airsoft gun that’ll have you racing across the resort’s grounds playing wargames.

The 7 Best Islands to Visit in Singapore

island trips from singapore

Singapore is a renowned island destination, yet travellers may be surprised to know that several smaller islands are accessible just off the mainland. These pieces of paradise offer tropical escapes, big thrills and moments of quiet, away from the electric bustle of the big city (without you ever having to spend money on a plane ticket).

A very popular escape for locals, Pulau Ubin is likened to a time capsule that transports visitors back to the Singapore of the 60s. From traditional residences to the rocky crags that jut out from its shore, this place is a rustic enclave that Singaporeans cherish and adore. Enjoy trekking or booking a visit to Chek Jawa, one of the last wetland reserves in Singapore, or just cycling along the biking trails if you so desire. To get there, take a bumboat from Changi Jetty which operates from sunrise to sunset daily. Pulau Ubin, Singapore

St. John’s Island

A former quarantine station transformed into a splendid island escape with beautiful beaches and tranquil spots. This island is one of Singapore’s least known destinations and it’s worth keeping it that way. There are chalets available at an affordable rate and if you’re a champion angler, you might want to bring your fishing rod as well. St John’s Island, Singapore

Beach at Saint John’s Island

Pulau Semakau

This island is a treasure trove full of rich and diverse species. Singapore’s Great-billed Heron (the tallest bird in the country) can be sighted here if you’re lucky. It’s not easy to visit, as they allow only a limited number of visitors per year to protect Pulau Semakau’s fragile habitat, but it’s incredibly rewarding for the scenic beauty and amazing biodiversity you will get to discover. To visit the island, you will need to apply for permission with the National Environmental Agency at least three to four weeks in advance and book a boat ride there separately. You can do this from a number of ferry terminals in the city, like Marina South Pier . Pulau Semakau, Singapore

Sister’s Islands

A very popular spot for snorkelling and diving, these islands are perfect for those wanting to observe Singapore’s marine life and spot everything from seahorses to sharks. Sister’s Islands were recently designated Singapore’s first Marine Park, offering guided tours to get up close and personal to the critters onshore. To get there, book a ferry from Marina South Pier – you can even stay overnight, so consider a next day return to enjoy the full experience. Sister’s Islands, Singapore

Kusu Island

Kusu Island boasts a number of interesting historical artefacts, namely shrines. There are three Islamic shrines commemorating pious Malay figures, which serve as a popular spot for religious people seeking blessings in hope for a child. Also very popular are the two Chinese temples that receive many visitors during festivals. To visit this island, book a boat ride from St. John’s Jetty. Kusu Island, Singapore

Pulau Hantu

Hantu means ghost in Malay but that shouldn’t put you off visiting this remote island , which is populated with coral and very popular with deep sea enthusiasts. Some fascinating marine species like the giant clam can be spotted here, which make it a perfect vantage point to snorkel as well. You can also snorkel safely here and its remote beaches provide a very envious form of isolation and peace for the beach bum. To visit Pulau Hantu, charter a boat from West Coast Pier.
