Def Leppard and Journey Unite for Massive U.S. Stadium Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Journey and Def Leppard are teaming up for a massive U.S. summer stadium tour, and they’re bringing Cheap Trick, Steve Miller Band, and Heart with them at various spots along the way. Expect a night of mega Eighties hits like “Don’t Stop Believin,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Faithfully,” “Photograph” and (depending on where you live) “The Flame,” “Abracadabra,” and “These Dreams.”

“Having just completed a sensational 18 month run promoting our Diamond Star Halos album,” Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott said in a statement, “we shall hit the boards running with a brand-new stage show and set of songs that will celebrate specific parts of our history. We may even have a surprise or two up our sleeves … so, wanna join us !??! … See you in the summer !”

Journey guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain have spent the past year battling each other in the court system and the press, but it somehow hasn’t slowed down the band’s touring machine. They crisscrossed the country with Toto last year, and they’re playing arenas together again in the early months of 2024.

ABOUT DEF LEPPARD

With more than 110 million albums sold worldwide and two prestigious Diamond Awards in the U.S., 2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame® inductees Def Leppard - Joe Elliott (vocals), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick Savage (bass), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drums) — continue to be one of the most important forces in rock music. Over the course of their career the band has produced a series of classic ground-breaking albums that set the bar for generations of music fans and artists alike. The group’s spectacular live shows and arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading Def Leppard to be heralded as the world’s greatest live rock band. Def Leppard’s influential career includes numerous hit singles and ground-breaking multi-platinum albums—including two of the best-selling albums of all time, Pyromania and Hysteria, capturing the group’s legendary tracks, bringing together classic Leppard hits such as “Rock of Ages”, Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Foolin.”  For the first time, in January 2018 Def Leppard debuted their full recording catalog worldwide via streaming and download platforms. As they did with the original release of their records, Def Leppard dominated the worldwide charts again, which found their albums charting in the iTunes Top 10 in more than 30 countries, including Hysteria at #3 in the US, and #5 in the UK (36 years after the album had charted at No 1 in the Billboard charts).  Def Leppard also had the #1, #2 and #3 records on the US catalog albums chart. The band have gone on to amass a staggering 5.5 billion streams since 2018, reaching a younger 18-44 demographic that now represents 58% of their fanbase. Additionally, the band have garnered an impressive 15 million followers across their social media platforms. In May 2022, Def Leppard released their twelfth studio album Diamond Star Halos. The album debuted at #1 on the Apple and Amazon Music charts. The album also scored a Top 10 debut on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart, marking the band’s eighth Top 10 album of their career, and garnered a #1 debut on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart. Diamond Star Halos had numerous Top 10 chart entries globally including a Top 5 debut in the UK. This has been followed by their 13 th studio album “Drastic Symphonies” with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023. The album charted at no 4 in the UK album charts – their highest UK chart entry in over 32 years. Following the close of their historic 2018 co-headline stadium and arena run in North America, Def Leppard sold more than 1,000,000 tickets, a massive feat in today’s touring world. Def Leppard & Mötley Crüe topped that number yet again with another sold out North American stadium run in 2022 selling over 1.3 million tickets. As always, the group continues pushing the boundaries with their electrifying live shows.

ABOUT STEVE MILLER

Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for more than half a century. Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than 15 million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time. At the start of his career, Miller became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late 1960s. Beginning in the 1970s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was polished, exciting, and irresistible — and that dominated radio in a way few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” and “Abracadabra,” among them. In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. At the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center where he has curated and headlined shows that explore the history of American music and the profound connections between the blues and jazz. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This past September, the 2016 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and 2022 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee released J50: The Evolution of The Joker to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of multi-million seller, iconic album, and single “The Joker.” With each listen the beauty and immediacy of his work, at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. Whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, one can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion, and eloquence, and making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, and more than able to stand the test of time.

Stadium? Who cares. Stadium shows went out in the 70’s with Day On The Green. Everybody who has ever been to a stadium show has been disappointed – except the acts stealing the money.

After a five year hiatus, allow Heart to go "Crazy on You" with their thrilling live show and long-awaited return to the stage!

The rockers previously announced they were setting out on a massive tour in 2024 — marking their reunion and first run of live shows since 2019 — and, on Tuesday, Heart revealed they're expanding the dates. The group helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will now continue their run, titled the Royal Flush Tour, across North America through the end of the year, along with an A-list slate of special guests.

While the "Barracuda" group's shows this year were originally set to kick off in late April and wrap up by September, they'll now be out on the road through the fall until mid-December.

Heart's 2024 tour kicks off on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, continues in the U.S. through May, before heading to Europe for a handful of dates in June and July. On July 30, they'll resume their North American leg in Columbus, Ohio, and then play through the rest of the summer and into the fall.

The newly announced dates begin on Sept. 26 in San Francisco and last until Dec. 15 in Las Vegas. Fans will be able to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at stadiums in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego and many others.

Throughout the Royal Flush Tour, the "Magic Man" band will be joined by fellow rock legends Cheap Trick, and select shows will also include support from BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening, the project from the son of the English rock group's original drummer.

The Wilson sisters shared a statement in press release about the upcoming concerts.

"We’re so excited to announce more tour dates," Ann, 73, said. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tony and Sean — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance."

Nancy, 70, added, "I am incredibly proud of the show that we have crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with even more fans. We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the big electric energy of a completely live on the spot rock show."

The Royal Flush Tour comes after the rock favorites celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

It also marks their first time out on the road together since 2019, when the "Alone" group set out on their Love Alive Tour. At the time, the shows saw the Wilsons coming back together after the two experience a brief rift. (In 2016, Ann's husband,  Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy's then-16-year-old sons  after they reportedly left a tour bus door open, which he pleaded guilty to two non-felony assault charges.)

Both Ann and Nancy also recently took time to record their own solo efforts: Ann with Fierce Bliss in 2022 and Nancy with You and Me in 2021.

The two hitmakers have both explained to PEOPLE in interviews that taking time apart only makes their work together in Heart stronger.

"[Taking time apart] allows us to bring stuff back to Heart that we didn't have before," Ann said in a 2022 interview . "We love each other. She and I really look forward to smooth sailing."

Meanwhile, Nancy shared in a 2021 conversation that it was "so amazing" to get back out on the road together on their 2019 tour. "I could see that the Heart fans really loved the big spectacle aspects of the show — even if Ann didn't love the bubble machine I had requested," she said. "But most of all we saw how much the Heart fans loved the Heart sisters reunited."

While the previously announced concerts are already on sale , tickets for the fall dates go on sale later this week. Ticket sales kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, which lasts from now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The general on-sale will then follow on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

The rock icons will hit stadiums across North America next summer

Def Leppard

Def Leppard and Journey have been logging some serious miles on the road lately. Back in February, Def Leppard kicked off the global edition of their wildly successful Stadium Tour with Mötley Crüe. The played a warm-up gig at Etess Arena inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. They proceeded to pack stadiums and arenas across South America, Europe, and Japan. The duo also played a few more shows stateside with special guest Alice Cooper.

Last year, Journey mounted an arena trek . They kept the Freedom Tour going bands kept the party going this year with a second leg of dates, celebrating their 50th anniversary. Since 2016, the band has been on the road consistently with the likes of Santana, Toto, and more

In 2018, Def Leppard and Journey teamed up for a co-headlining run. The 60-show tour lasted just over four months. Next year, the two rock juggernauts are running it back.

Both bands will be headlining stadiums in 2024. The run will feature very special guest appearances by Heart, Cheap Trick, and Steve Miller Band on select dates. The trek kicks off on July 6 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri and wraps up on September 8 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. Check out the full tour itinerary and tour preview trailer below.

General tickets will go on sale Friday, December 15 with a special fan pre-sale on Tuesday, December 12 at 11am local time. Def Leppard Rock Brigade Concert Club members get exclusive first access to pre-sale tickets and VIP Packages on Tuesday, December 12 at 10am. Def Leppard are offering variety of VIP packages, and Journey will also have a limited amount of experience per show.

Journey

“Def Leppard and Journey will be reuniting and hitting the road together for the Summer Stadium Tour with Steve Miller, Cheap Trick and Heart on select shows, which makes for an amazing night of music,” Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliot said. “Having just completed a sensational 18-month run promoting our Diamond Star Halos album, we shall hit the boards running with a brand-new stage show and set of songs that will celebrate specific parts of our history. We may even have a surprise or two up our sleeves…so, wanna join us?! See you in the summer!”

“We are thrilled to be back on the road in 2024 with so many good friends as part of this tour,” Journey added. “No matter which city you come to this will be an amazing night of music!”

Def Leppard released a new album,  Drastic Symphonies , on May 19. The record paired the band with London’s iconic The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It features some of Def Leppard’s greatest songs reimagined, as well as a few rare gems. The record was released on CD, 2-LP black vinyl, limited 2-LP colored vinyl, limited -LP picture disc, CD/Blu-Ray (Atmos) and digitally. The vinyl and Atmos versions will also feature an exclusive bonus track, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad.”

Journey have a stacked schedule slated for 2024. Before their summer stadium run, the band is hitting the road on a new leg of their ongoing 50th anniversary tour with very special guests Toto. The 30-show trek kicks off on February 9 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi and wraps up on April 29 at the Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Very special guests for the trek will once again be Toto.

Nancy Wilson live 2023 Matt Bishop

In July of 2022, Journey released  Freedom (BMG/Frontiers) – their first studio album in over a decade. The follow-up to 2011’s Eclipse, it marks the longest gap between albums in the band’s career. The all-new Freedom is also the band’s most hefty release, with 15 songs that clock in over an hour. Produced by guitarist Neal Shon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain, alongside Narada Michael Walden (Elton John, Santana, Steve Winwood). Anchored by the lead single, “The Way We Used to Be,” the album produced four more singles and landed at No. 17 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.

In October, fans at Ann Wilson’s Santa Rosa, California show were treated to a monumental surprise. For the show’s encore, Ann brought out a very special guest – none other than her sister and fellow Heart member,  Nancy Wilson . The duo had not shared a stage together since 2019, but reunited for a raucous performance of the band’s classic 1977 hit, “Barracuda.” Check out fan-filmed footage of the performance  HERE .

Cheap Trick live [Credit: Matt Bishop]

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have an answer to a question with us tonight,” Ann said to the crowd. “A very, very good friend of mine – more than a friend. Let’s bring her out. Come on.”

On October 24, Heart confirmed a special performance on New Year’s Eve [December 31] at Climate Pledge Arena in their hometown of Seattle, Washington along with very special guests Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening. Building off the momentum, the group also confirmed another headlining jaunt at Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California on Thursday, December 28.

The tireless Cheap Trick had a busy year, touring alongside Rod Stewart in addition to their own headlining shows. In 2021, the road warriors released their 20th studio album, In Another World . The record debuted in the Top 10 on several Billboard charts, and featuring signature songs like “Light Up the Fire,” “Boys & Girls & Rock N Roll,” and “The Summer Looks Good on You.”

Still touring fairly regularly, rock icons Steve Miller Band released their last album Let Your Hair Down back in 2011. To date, the group has sold nearly 30 million albums worldwide. Steve Miller himself was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Heart Announces 2024 ‘Royal Flush’ Tour With Cheap Trick

Heart has announced the 2024 Royal Flush tour with support from Cheap Trick , marking their first extended trek since 2019.

The North American leg will launch on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, and conclude on Sept. 22 in Morrison, Colorado. Heart will also head to Europe in late June through mid-July, with Squeeze opening select dates.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday through Heart's website . You can see the full list of tour dates below.

Heart's Recent Touring History and Family Drama

Heart last hit the road in 2019 for the Love Alive tour, ending a three-year hiatus and estrangement between Ann and Nancy Wilson . The sisters put the band on hold after Ann's husband was arrested for allegedly hitting one of Nancy's children during Heart's 2016 tour.

Following the 2019 trek, Heart once again took an extended break, during which both sisters released solo music and Nancy toured under the name Nancy Wilson's Heart. Although some onlookers have questioned whether tensions remain between the Wilson sisters, Ann insisted in 2022 that there was no lingering animosity.

"It's a myth," the singer  said . "Nancy and I are OK with each other. We just have different ideas for what Heart should be, and we haven't figured out a compromise yet."

Heart reunited for a trio of shows at the end of 2023, marking their first performances in four years. In addition to their headlining tour, they'll support  Def Leppard  and Journey on a handful of their stadium tour dates this summer. Nancy Wilson also said last June that she and Ann were working on new material that's "closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the '70s, late '70s. So it's really fun, it's just exciting and inspiring."

Speaking about the tour, Heart’s Ann Wilson expressed her excitement, as well as her admiration for the band’s current lineup. “We’re excited and all geared up to hit the road in 2024 to perform for our devoted fans,” she said in a statement. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan [Wariner, guitar], Ryan [Waters, guitar], Paul [Moak, guitar], Tony [Lucido, bass], and Sean [Lane, drums] — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance.”

DEF LEPPARD Guitarist PHIL COLLEN - "You Mustn't Mess The Song Up With A Solo"

April 25, 2024, 14 hours ago

news phil collen def leppard

DEF LEPPARD Guitarist PHIL COLLEN - "You Mustn't Mess The Song Up With A Solo"

To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history.

In the video below, courtesy of Premier Guitar, Collen and Shifty talk through Phil’s formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and Gary Moore, who all played a hand in Collen’s high-flying fretwork.

Collen’s solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren’t many tricks to Collen’s sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the ’80s.

Check out the official lyric video for “Photograph”:

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

Heart and Cheap Trick Launch Royal Flush Tour: Set Lists and Videos

Heart kicked off their Royal Flush tour on Saturday at Greenville, South Carolina’s Bon Secours Wellness Arena with support from Cheap Trick .

You can see both set lists and videos from both performances below.

In addition to classics like “Magic Man,” “Straight On” and “Barracuda,” Heart also performed a few of Nancy and Ann Wilson ‘s respective solo songs, plus covers of Led Zeppelin and David Bowie .

The Royal Flush tour marks Heart’s first extended trek since 2019 and will keep them on the road, primarily in North America, through late September. The rockers will also head to Europe in June and July with Squeeze opening select dates, and they’ll support Def Leppard and Journey on a handful of stadium dates in July and August.

Is Heart Working on a New Album?

It’s been a turbulent decade for Heart, who haven’t released a studio album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken . Ann and Nancy Wilson put the band on hold that year after Ann’s husband was arrested for allegedly hitting one of Nancy’s children during their 2016 tour.

The sisters mended fences and embarked on the Love Alive tour in 2019, followed by another extended break during which they both released solo albums. However, Nancy Wilson said last June that Heart was working on new material that is “closer to what you would have heard us originally do in the ’70s, late ’70s. So it’s really fun, it’s just exciting and inspiring.”

ASHWAUBENON - There’s not many classic rock bands from the ’70s who haven’t played the Resch Center in the past 20-plus years — Styx, REO Speedwagon, The Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, Bad Company, Journey — but never Heart.

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, back on the road for the first time since 2019, will make their first Resch Center visit at 8 p.m. Nov. 22 for the Royal Flush Tour . Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, featuring the son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, will open.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at  ticketstaronline.com , 800-895-0071 and the Resch Center box office. Prices are $49.50, $65, $85, $125 and $149.50. Several VIP packages are also available.

It has been 22 years since Heart last brought “Barracuda,” “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “What About Love” to Green Bay when the band played Oneida Bingo & Casino’s Pavilion Nights series on its 2002 Summer of Love Tour. It won’t be the first time in the Resch for Ann Wilson, however. She opened solo for Styx at the arena in 2018 .

The tour, which was first announced in January, kicks off April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, and also includes an Aug. 15 date with Cheap Trick at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. An additional run of North American fall dates was announced Tuesday.

In addition to the Wilsons, the current lineup of Heart features Ryan Wariner, Ryan Waters, Paul Moak, Tony Lucido and Sean Lane.
