About JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame . Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube .

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

What We Believe

Frequently asked questions.

The Journey Christian Church is a multi-racial, teaching ministry. Our focus is to teach members to mature past the point of just experiencing God for themselves, to where our members are actually teaching others. One of our passions at Journey is saving and developing extraordinary relationships and marriages by teaching spiritual, emotional, and practical aspects of the relationships. We pride ourselves on being a safe haven for the member that is experiencing difficulties in a relationship and for those just attempting to enrich and maintain right-relationships. Our secondary focus is on the children's ministry. Ministry leaders continually look for creative ways to meet the needs of the children.

Our vision is to see, within two generations or less, a reconciled Memphis, first to God and then to one another, that will infect the world.

We are on the Journey. Our mission is to see a racially reconciled Memphis by Empowering Right Relationships, Sharing God's Love, and Teaching the Children.

What Others Are Saying

The Online church keeps me connected while getting me back to the Spirit of God. I have no excuses because it is in the comfort of my home. I have access to it all the time. Hopefully, OWE will continue to grow and encourage others as I have grown. My ultimate goal is to get back to church. This online church is helping me to get comfortable with the transition. I want to get to attending church again.

I am learning so much more about HOPE. It has increased my knowledge of true HOPE. I love the definition "The earnest expectation" it has true meaning to me. Before I have listened to others about hope and I guess it was used loosely. Now, I have the true meaning from a biblical sense.

48 Hours in Memphis: The Ultimate Itinerary

journey in memphis tennessee

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Welcome to Memphis, where live music flows fast, and the barbecue is renowned the world over. But there's more to the city than eating your weight's worth in pork ribs and jamming to rock 'n' roll and blues—although we're totally for that, too. The city has a dynamic past, having kick-started the careers of music legends like Elvis Presley and Isaac Hayes and playing a monumental role in the Civil Rights Movement.

To help you plan your next trip to the Home of the Blues, we've come up with an itinerary that gives you a taste of the city's culture and history . From where to find the best barbecue in the city (spoiler alert: there isn't one) to must-do studio tours, here's how to make the most of two days in Memphis.

Day 1: Morning

10: a.m.: After landing at Memphis International Airport , make your way over to your hotel to drop off your bags. If there's one thing Memphis is known for, it's music. Get in touch with the city's claim to fame by booking a stay at the Central Station Hotel , located in a 105-year-old—and still operating—train station in the South Main district. Opened in the fall of 2019, the hotel broadcasts a curated playlist of tunes throughout the space and houses a sizable selection of vinyl in a private lounge designed for audiophiles. And come nighttime, there's a live DJ to keep the tunes flowing after a stroll down Beale Street.

11 a.m.: Once you've checked in or stored your bags, it's time to eat. Of course, no trip to the city is complete without sampling Memphis-style barbecue. Slow-smoked, dry, and smothered in a sweet sauce, the barbecue here is unbelievably delicious. There’s a lot of debate about where to find the best in the city; some swear by Cozy Corner , while others will point you to Central BBQ (their pork ribs truly are out-of-this-world). But locals will tell you that you must try the barbecue spaghetti. Head to Neely's Interstate Bar-B-Que for a plate.

Day 1: Afternoon

1 p.m.: When you're feeling properly stuffed, journey over to Soulsville USA, the birthplace of soul music. The Stax Museum , located at the original site of Stax Records, pays tribute to the iconic record label and its legendary artists: Otis Redding, Booker T. and The MGs, Carla Thomas, and more. Dive into the history of soul music, walk through a replica of Stax's recording studio, and explore the museum's wealth of memorabilia: Tina Turner's sparkly yellow stage costume, the original Otis Redding record of "Respect," and Isaac Hayes' Cadillac—mini-refrigerator, TV, and 24-carat windshield wipers included.

3 p.m.: While Soulsville is the birthplace of soul music, Memphis is the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. Be sure to take a 45-minute guided tour of Sun Studio , a still-operating recording studio where the likes of B.B. King, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley were discovered. You can stand in the studio where the King himself recorded the hit that launched him to fame—a cover of Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right"—and sing into the same microphone that he and countless other rockstars have sung into. The last tour begins at 5:30 p.m.; adult tickets are $15 each.

Day 1: Evening

7 p.m.: For an intimate or celebratory dinner, book a table at Bishop , located in Central Station. The brasserie-style eatery serves up French cuisine with a southern flair, such as escargots topped with country ham and bone marrow popovers. Order a few small plates to share with the table, or go heartier by opting for the lamb shank or hollandaise-topped flounder. For burgers and beer, head next door to Earnestine & Hazel's . They might only serve one type of burger—your typical patty topped with cheese, onions, and pickles—but they do it right. The space is said to be one of the most haunted spots in the U.S. (the jukebox is allegedly possessed), so come at your own risk. If you're not particularly in the mood to get spooked, head to Loflin Yard . They offer Southern-style sandwiches and smaller-sized portions of brisket tacos, smoked wings, and spicy tenders—all of which pair perfectly well with a cocktail or two. This indoor/outdoor locale boasts live music, events like trivia and bingo, ax throwing, lawn games, and more.

9 p.m.: It's no secret that Beale Street is the go-to spot for musical entertainment in the city; you can find live music—in genres like classic rock 'n' roll, blues, and jazz—at pretty much any bar or club here. Learn what the hype is all about and get a taste of that famous Tennessee whiskey. The original location of national chain B. B. King's Blues Club is right here and one to add to your bar-hopping itinerary. In the mood for something a bit quieter? Head to the Absinthe Room for cocktails, jukebox tunes, and games like pool and shuffleboard.

Day 2: Morning

8 a.m.: If you stayed out late, we wouldn't blame you if you wanted to sleep in and recharge. But, if you're the kind of traveler who likes to get up and go, consider eating breakfast right across the street at the city's oldest restaurant (and one that Elvis used to frequent). Opened in 1919, Arcade Restaurant is a '50s-style diner that serves all the classics, including French toast, omelets, country fried steak, and sweet potato pancakes. You're in for a busy day, so fuel up with a hearty meal and a cup of coffee or tea.

10 a.m.: Just seven miles (about a 15-minute drive) from downtown is the place that Elvis called home: Graceland . Whimsical and more-often-than-not flamboyant, the second most-visited house in the U.S. cost just $102,500 when the King bought it in 1957. Even if you don't consider yourself a fan, it's worth a look to see the infamous Jungle Room with its flood of plastic plants and animal prints, waterfall, and green shag carpet on the floor and ceiling. You can take a peek inside his private jets for a few extra bucks or sign up for the Elvis Experience tour to get a glimpse at his iconic Pink Cadillac and flashy jumpsuits right up close. Tickets start at $42.50.

Day 2: Afternoon

Andrea Zucker

1 p.m.: Graceland offers hungry patrons a couple of different dining options (we certainly wouldn't say no to a peanut butter and banana sandwich), but if you're ready to head back downtown, check out local favorite Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken . A Memphis tradition, they're a go-to for hot and spicy fried chicken. Order baked beans and mac and cheese on the side, and, if you're feeling really hungry, a slice of chess pie.

2 p.m.: One of the most important museums you will ever see in your lifetime, the National Civil Rights Museum is just a few blocks away. It's centered in and around the Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. Through interactive media, artifacts, and exhibits, the Lorraine Building gives visitors a comprehensive—and sobering—overview of the civil rights movement, beginning with slavery in America and ending at rooms 306 and 307, where Dr. King spent the last few hours of his life. The story continues across the street at the Legacy Building, the former boarding house of James Earl Ray; here, you can learn about his arrest, trial, and conviction, as well as conspiracy theories and human rights movements across the globe.

5 p.m.: For a pre-dinner nibble, make a pit stop at Phillip Ashley Chocolates . A real-life Willy Wonka, Chef Ashley's gourmet sweets have delighted the likes of celebrities at Grammys and Academy Awards after-parties with their delectable taste and artful design. The chocolatier constantly comes up with unique flavors (like white French blue cheese and all dark chocolate with pomegranate, cherry, and molasses) that will make your mouth water. They are almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Day 2: Evening

Courtesy of Restaurant Iris

6 p.m.: It's your last night in the city, so don't be afraid to go all out with a fancy meal at Restaurant Iris . Housed in a bungalow in East Parkway, this fine dining establishment features French-Creole cuisine with menu items like wild mushroom cannelloni and duck confit carbonara. The cocktail menu is exquisite, as is the extensive wine and spirits list. Get some molasses bread with house-made butter to split with the table, and you're in for a treat.

8 p.m.: Round out your trip with live music at Lafayette's Restaurant and Bar, which claims to have launched the careers of legends like Bill Joel and KISS. They host both local and touring musicians, with a focus on rock, jazz, and blues. Check out the website to see the scheduled lineup of events.

How to Spend Three Days in Memphis, Tennessee

journey in memphis tennessee

Memphis is a vibrant city, culturally diverse and strongly linked to many historic events over the last century. Whether you are talking about the Civil Rights Movement, the iconic Elvis Presley or the rise of Memphis soul, the city has many an amazing tale to tell.

Like Nashville, Memphis is home to an immense amount of incredible live music. Avoiding the beautiful tunes is almost impossible and Beale Street is one of the best stretches of live music bars in the country.

With the help of our three days in Memphis itinerary, you will explore Memphis musical history, civil rights and sample some of the best eats in town.

journey in memphis tennessee

Where to Stay in Memphis

Downtown Memphis is the place to base yourself during your travels. Not only will you be within walking distance of the famous Beale Street, many attractions on this itinerary will also be a short trek away. There are several mid-range hotels to suit most budgets, along with many vacation rentals in the downtown district.

A secondary option would be Midtown. Close to Overton Park, the Zoo, museums and laid-back nightlife, you can escape some of the tourist crowd by staying here.

journey in memphis tennessee

The Best Time of Year to Visit Memphis

While there is no bad time to go to Memphis, you can certainly increase your enjoyment and ability to get around the city by avoiding the winter months. However, without the tourist crowd, you will enjoy cheaper accommodation and less waiting time at popular attractions.

Spring and the fall are the best times of year to visit Memphis. In the spring, the trees come back to life and Beale Street kicks up a gear ahead of the summer months of festivals and fun. Fall sees crowds diminish, and with plenty of sun you will have the comfort, time and space to move around with ease.

In the summer, temperatures in the city can climb up into the 90s (32c) which can put some people off. However, many of the city’s festivals occur in June and July, along with even more concerts.

Family at Graceland

Day 1: Graceland, Ducks, and Beale Street

With the tunes of Paul Simon’s Graceland playing over the radio, begin your three days in Memphis at the city’s most iconic attraction, Graceland. The stunning mansion that was once the home of Elvis Presley.

Graceland is split into two sections, the home itself which you can tour and the museum. Start with the home and explore the interior full of self-portraits and mirrors. It is an eccentric place, befitting of such a famous figure.

Afterwards, head over to the sprawling museum space that is dedicated to the life and times of Elvis. Discover jumpsuits, golden suits and other stage wear used by the great man across his sparkling career.

Other highlights include Elvis’ spectacular pink Cadillac, among other such cars at Presley Motors, and the Room of Inspiration.

journey in memphis tennessee

After an introduction to Elvis Presley, make your way over to the place in which he got his start, the Sun Studio. This studio discovered such revered artists as Johnny Cash and Jerry Lewis, along with Presley. The Sun Studio is still an operating recording studio to this day.

The best way to experience the studio that produced many classic hits and put Memphis on the map is to sign up for a walking tour . Your musically talented guide won’t just spill the beans on the studio’s illustrious history, but he or she will whip out a guitar for some chords or show their wares on the piano. You’ll hear all the tunes of yesteryear and feel a wonderful sense of connection to the place where these songs originally came to life.

Keep in mind that tours can’t be reserved in advance and are sold on a first come, first served basis.

journey in memphis tennessee

As the wheels of the day turn the afternoon into evening, make your way to the Peabody Hotel. Twice a day, at 11am and 5pm, the famous grand march of the ducks takes place.

Now, these aren’t just any old ducks playing around in the fountain. They transition to and from nature at the hands of a professional caregiver. For three months, they live a life of duck luxury at the Chateau du Canard. Twice a day, they commute from their cozy home on the roof to the fountain guided by the resident Duck Master.

The position of Duck Master is a revered job and not one that just falls into your lap. The last Master came to work every day for half a century. As the ducks float in the fountain, they splash each other and say hello (in duck) to the adoring crowd.

Once the parade is complete, the ducks waddle back to the elevator for the trip back to their home in the sky.

journey in memphis tennessee

As the dinner plate is taken away and you’re ready for a night out in Memphis, turn your attention to Beale Street. Memphis’ version of Nashville’s lower Broadway, Beale Street is home to endless bars playing soul, blues and country into the early hours.

When the sun falls and moon rises, Beale Street becomes pedestrian-only and open containers are allowed. The neon signs flash brightly against the old buildings that have been the bridge between obscurity and stardom. Like Bourbon Street and the Honky Tonk Highway, the action on Beale is just as entertaining as the bars themselves.

So if you aren’t enjoying the live tunes, you’ll be able to take in some top-notch people watching along the journey. Having said that, bars you have to check out during your Memphis adventure include the Blues Hall, an intimate live music venue, and the Rum Boogie Cafe. Both are connected and you can make the most of both with just a single cover charge.

Where to Eat

From the Sun Studio, you’ll have just a short walk to your lunch at Edge Alley. Serving new American fare, enjoyed refined southern comforts that add a healthy spin to your favorite dishes.

Once the ducks have safely returned to the elevator, head across to the Capriccio Grill inside the Peabody Hotel. Normally, hotel restaurants are at best ok, but Capriccio bucks the trend. From classic southern cuisine to modern takes on international dishes, this restaurant has you covered.

journey in memphis tennessee

Day 2: The Zoo, Civil Rights, and Midtown

Begin day two in Memphis by waking up and stretching out in Overton Park, the largest park in town. Kick back with a coffee under the shade and watch the locals begin their day. Once you’re up and about, then you can take a few steps over to the zoo, one of the best things to do with kids in Memphis.

The Memphis Zoo is home to over 3500 animals, spanning more than 500 species. They all combine to make this one of the best zoos in the United States. Each exhibit does an exceptional job of replicating the animal’s natural habitat, creating a fascinating place to learn about each species.

Memphis Zoos’ top attraction is the panda exhibit. Only a handful of zoos in the country are home to giant pandas. Beyond the fluffy creatures, there is an expansive aquarium, one of the first parts of the zoo that opened along with the African Veldt, where zebras, elephants and ostriches roam.

After exploring the zoo, head towards downtown Memphis and the Lorraine Motel, the location of Martin Luther King Junior’s assassination. Now transformed into the National Civil Rights Museum, you will take a thorough trip through the major moments that shifted the Civil Rights Movement along with several lesser-known events that changed the course of history.

The power of the museum also stems from the tragic location. As you learn about Dr King’s death, you will stand where he stood. Before following the trail of information to try to understand how it all came to be.

The highly rated museum is jarring (as it should be) but educational covering everything from the Freedom Rides to sit-ins and the impact young people had on national civil rights. It will leave you with a greater understanding and appreciation of the movement and the impact it continues to have on the modern day.

From the National Civil Rights Museum, you will have a brief journey to your afternoon adventure on the Mississippi River. The Memphis Sightseeing Tour with Memphis Riverboats is a 90-minute journey down the biggest river in America. With live historical commentary, you will discover the history of the river, along with Memphis and the state of Tennessee.

The 10-mile round trip offers exceptional views of the city along with the landscape up and down the Mississippi River. With drinks and snacks on board, kick back on your classic paddleboat and enjoy the ride.

As the sun sets on Memphis, there is no better place to capture the blazing sky than at Big River Crossing. At just under a mile (1.6km) from one side to the other, this crossing is the biggest bridge along the entire Mississippi River. Under the setting sun, cross from downtown Memphis to Arkansas and back, taking note of the state line marked on the bridge.

journey in memphis tennessee

Watch the sun sink below the horizon, lighting up the river and return to downtown Memphis as the neon lights of Beale Street spring to life once more.

Another night on Beale Street could very well be on the cards, and we won’t stop you. But if you are looking for something different, you can head a block over to South Front Street or towards Memphis’ Midtown. The Overton Entertainment District may not go as hard as Beale Street but you will find plenty of laid-back bars, live music at Lafayette’s while you can enjoy a late-night snack at Local’s Kitchen which does curbside pickups until 2am on the weekends.

Alternatively

For an afternoon out of Memphis, take a scenic one-hour drive to the Holly Springs National Forest. In a rustic, country landscape, explore lush pine and hardwood forests, with plenty of outdoor activities to embark on. Hiking trails abound, providing anything from a casual stroll to a leg-burning trek. As for anglers, there are several lakes to throw out your reel along with the rushing Tippah River. You can also get out on the water on a kayak or swim from the many beaches on a sunny day.

Instead of an afternoon river cruise, another option is to reserve a two-hour dinner cruise on the gorgeous boat, complete with live entertainment. After your meal, grab a refreshing beverage and embark to the top deck, where you can cruise the Mississippi River under the night sky.

journey in memphis tennessee

Start your morning well with a trip to Sunrise Breakfast, a Memphis institution. The southern comfort food is some of the best breakfast in town. The eclectic diner will keep your eyes entertained and may remind you of your grandma’s living room. Their large plates hit the spot and will have you powering through the adventures to come.

No trip to Memphis would be complete without sampling the goods at Central BBQ. Right across from the National Civil Rights Museum, you’ll see a line coming out the door. Once you’ve tried their mouthwatering ribs, it will all make sense.

Before beginning your night on the town, have dinner at Bishop. This restaurant comes with wonderful craft cocktails and an extensive wine list. Pair that with their amazing seafood selection and vegetarian options.

Day Three: Soul Music and Mud Island

Home to the famous Stax Records, the Stax Records Museum is the perfect place to begin your final day in Memphis. The recording studio played a massive role in creating the sounds of soul music during its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s.

Stax was once home to such artists as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Booker T. With soul music being so entwined with black culture, your visit to the Civil Rights Museum will also help you understand the history of the studio. Once a place where it was all about the tunes, as the Civil Rights Movement grew, racial tension within the studio came to a boiling point.

Emotion and lived experiences poured into the lyrics and as the landscape of blues changed, those that couldn’t keep up with the times shifted to other genres. The rise of soul music from an economic point of view came to a crashing end and Stax went bankrupt.

Stax Museum may have a focus on the musical legends that recorded here, but the studio’s story is intrinsically linked to the events and times in which it lived. Tours of the museum will explore the multi-faceted home of Memphis soul. Stax remains a place of live music to this day and if you’re lucky, your experience will line up with a free live concert.

journey in memphis tennessee

From the Stax Museum, soak up the nature of Memphis by making your way to Mud Island. What was once literally a mud island has come on in leaps and bounds to feature parks, recreational activities and gorgeous downtown views.

One of the top attractions is the Memphis sign, which is sure to make for the perfect picture to commemorate your travels.

journey in memphis tennessee

Rather than the Stax Museum, another great alternative is the Rock ‘n Soul Museum. This museum was set up by the Smithsonian Institute, telling the story of music in Memphis, from humble beginnings to the current day.

In a city shaped by the tunes of six-string guitars and the hauntingly beautiful voices of Memphis blues and soul, discover the world of early Memphis musicians who had to overcome enormous obstacles to show their talents to the world. Along the way, it will become clear how these efforts also affected culture near and far. Click here to buy your tickets online and in advance — entry is $11 per person.

For your morning meal on day 3, venture to the Arcade restaurant. This local eatery is the oldest in Memphis and has been welcoming guests since the year 1919. Not much has changed here. Their sweet potato pancakes are still a local favorite and the storefront is as instagrammable as ever.

Before crossing the river to Mud Island, dine out at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. In a throwback brick building, the exterior may leave a lot to be desired, but that’s because they are too busy perfecting their fried chicken recipes. It isn’t a simple takeout restaurant either, as they make each piece to order, coming out crunchy, juicy and delightfully spicy.

Final Thoughts

It is hard not to think that Memphis is underrated. It may be overshadowed by Nashville by some or out of the picture for others, yet it is a wonderful excuse for an exciting three-day vacation.

Memphis is a walkable town, and easy to get around. Many of the attractions and activities in this itinerary are within walking distance of each other. You can forego renting a car and jump on an e-bike whenever you need to switch things up.

There is an endless list of amazing restaurants, museums that will make you think, and of course, the home of the one and only Elvis Presley.

Hanley School in Tennessee’s turnaround district will return to MSCS control

A man behind a podium with arm raised speaks into a microphone on a school stage, behind an enthusiastic crowd that includes cheerleaders.

For the first time, a charter school in Tennessee’s turnaround district will exit the state program and return to the Memphis district’s management, Memphis-Shelby County Schools announced this week.

Hanley School, a K-8 school in Orange Mound , was taken over by the state and placed in the Achievement School District a decade ago to be run by a charter operator. This fall, it will be part of the Memphis district’s turnaround model, known as the iZone.

The move marks a setback for the school’s charter operator, and another twist in the chaotic unwinding of the Achievement School District, which has been rocked by leadership turnover and turmoil.

The state district began operating in 2012 and was designed to elevate some of Tennessee’s lowest performing schools by turning them over to charter operators under 10-year management contracts. The schools were to exit the ASD once their performance improved and return to their home districts — either Memphis, home to all but two of the schools, or Nashville.

But state leaders have acknowledged for years that the turnaround effort had failed in its mission. And as some of the 10-year management contracts near expiration, they have scrambled in recent years to figure out how to move schools out of the faltering ASD and get them on a path to improvement.

The current state policy describes several pathways for an ASD school to leave the district, including some options to stay open as a charter. The policy stresses “school specific” plans to account for each school’s “unique” situations.

In the case of Hanley, the policy resulted in the current operator, Journey Community Schools, not being able to keep the school under its network, and the transition to MSCS began over the last few months.

As other ASD schools creep up on their final years, Memphis could see a wave of school closures if MSCS doesn’t bring those schools back into the district.

Charter operator decries the decision on Hanley

Nickalous Manning, executive director of Journey Community Schools, denounced the way Hanley’s transition is being handled.

“The children and families in Orange Mound and at Hanley deserve a voice and a say in their children’s education,” Manning told Chalkbeat Wednesday, echoing a common complaint in Memphis that state leaders make decisions and policies affecting local families — like creating the ASD — without their input.

Manning accused state officials of not communicating an impending deadline for Hanley to apply to remain open as a charter school, and faulted them for not holding more public meetings with families. The exit process was unclear, Journey wrote in a letter to the state asking for a waiver of laws that prevent Journey from continuing to operate the school.

The state’s education commissioner, Penny Schwinn, cited state law and rules in denying the waiver. MSCS shared copies of the letters between Manning and the state with Chalkbeat to explain why the district won’t consider Journey’s charter application for Hanley.

The Tennessee Department of Education, where the ASD is housed, told Chalkbeat that all ASD charter operators received information about transition plans in 2020. ASD leaders meet monthly with the charter operators to review school status, department spokesperson Victoria Robinson said.

Robinson supplied a list of meetings scheduled over the last academic year with Hanley officials about the transition. Parents received a letter about the plans in January, Robinson said, and were invited to a meeting earlier this week.

Manning, who grew up in Orange Mound, said Journey plans to keep trying to hang on to Hanley.

Hanley will be the first charter school in the ASD to return to MSCS as a traditional public school. Four other ASD schools in Memphis were never operated as charter schools, and transitioned to MSCS operations this school year , also as part of the district’s iZone program.

Others have followed different pathways as dictated by the state policy, which takes into account the school’s test scores, the local district’s test scores, and how many years are left in the charter contract.

In most of the exits, schools where students showed high growth on state tests have swapped from the ASD to the Tennessee Public Charter School Commission’ s oversight.

That option wasn’t available for Hanley. Available school testing data shows Hanley’s students haven’t noticeably improved during the state takeover, much like other schools in the ASD.

Hanley’s reading scores, for instance, are nearly on par with the ASD average this year, and lower than a nearby MSCS elementary school, Dunbar. Neither school had more than 12% of students meeting reading benchmarks.

Only one Memphis ASD school has applied to join MSCS as a charter. The board approved it against the recommendation of the district . In April, MSCS board members will have a slate of five ASD schools to consider reabsorbing as charter schools, including Coleman School, another Journey school in its ninth operating year.

FAYETTE COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — Tennesseans favorite travel center is opening a new location in the state!

Buc-ee's will be opening a travel center in West Tennessee, according to a Facebook post from Senator Page Walley (R-Savannah). The Texas-based convenience store and gas station will open in Fayette County, Tennessee.

The Buc-ee's will be located off Interstate 40 at Exit 28 in Gallaway, which Southern Living reports will be about 40 minutes from downtown Memphis.

"BUC-EE’S-WELCOME TO FAYETTE COUNTY!!!" the Facebook post caption from Sen. Walley said. "Another great economic and commercial achievement for our District!"

The 74,000-square-foot travel center is set to have 120 fueling positions and 71 clean bathrooms , which the business has a reputation for.

The Buc-ee's in Fayette County will not be a truck stop and no semi-trucks are allowed.

Buc-ee's Director of Real Estate and Development Stan Beard provided FOX 17 News with the following statement on the new location:

“We are very pleased that the Gallaway project is taking shape in the planning and permitting processes. We’ve still got some work ahead of us, but Buc-ee’s is continuing its process toward making Gallaway our first home in West Tennessee.”

As for jobs, the senator's post says the store is looking to employ 175 to 250 full-time employees. The starting wage with benefits ranks from $17 to $19 an hour.

In a large city that struggles with gun violence, Metro Nashville police have seized more than 15,000 firearms just in the past six years.

So what happens to most of those guns?

Police store them indefinitely.

Tennessee is one of a handful of states that prohibit police agencies from destroying guns seized in crimes or recovered in buyback programs. Instead, some departments sell the guns at auctions or trade them for upgrades, while others opt to store the weapons so they won’t go back into circulation — where they could be used in new crimes.

Disposal of confiscated guns has long been a controversial issue in law enforcement.

Many progressive cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York destroy guns, while several conservative states in recent years have done the opposite, passing laws that ban the destruction of guns, in some cases after lobbying from the National Rifle Association.

Kentucky has taken it a step further, mandating that all recovered guns be sold at auction in a program that generates millions for state law enforcement. But the effort has been met with pushback and new proposed legislation from lawmakers who argue that guns used in violent crimes should never again see the light of day.

But the gun destruction process has raised other concerns.

A recent New York Times investigation found that police agencies across the country were handing off firearms to companies that instead of fully destroying the weapons were reselling the parts in gun kits.

The Tennessean reviewed several law enforcement agencies across the state and found different practices across the state. While some larger agencies store guns, smaller departments hold auctions that they say helps their budgets.

Henry County Sheriff Josh Frey in West Tennessee said an auction last year netted around $100,000 for his department. The auction featured hundreds of firearms and even some BB guns and crossbows.

“For smaller agencies like us and so many others across the state it’s a boost for our budget,” he said. “We can use it to get some good things and we don’t have to ask the taxpayers for that money.”

A Tennessee law forbids destruction of confiscated guns

Tennessee allowed law enforcement to destroy confiscated guns up until 2010, when then-Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen signed a law banning the practice.

The bill, which was heavily backed by the National Rifle Association, was signed into law on the same day that a mentally ill man at the Pentagon shot and wounded two police officers using a gun that had originally been confiscated and later traded by the Memphis Police Department .

Today, the Memphis Police Department says it exchanges confiscated guns for equipment, like ammunition or body armor, using city contacts with approved vendors.

“This process is done periodically throughout the year, allowing the department to have adequate storage space for weapons seized,” Memphis Police Sgt. Louis Brownlee wrote in an email.

Brownlee said the department occasionally will petition the courts to be allowed to destroy weapons if they are unsafe or inoperable.

In Nashville, the stockpile keeps growing.

The department on average seizes more than 2,000 guns each year. Last year, it seized 2,909 firearms. It has also collected 79 guns in a retrieval program with local churches, said Metro Police spokesperson Kristin Mumford. The department does not sell or trade guns and keeps them in storage.

“We keep our crime guns and we can use them for testing to determine whether they have been used in other crimes and that may help us solve cases,” she said.

For instance, the guns used in the Covenant School mass shooting that killed six people last year are also in storage.

While Nashville hasn’t said whether it has storage space concerns, departments in North Carolina have said they’re bursting at the seams with stored weapons and have pushed to change the state law.

Selling guns at auction

The Chattanooga Police Department also chooses not to sell or trade seized guns and instead keeps them in storage. The department said it recovered 1,030 guns last year.

Like Memphis, the Knoxville Police Department also trades seized firearms for new equipment or upgraded duty weapons, spokesperson Scott Erland said.

“Trades have proven to be a cost effective method that allows us to get rid of seized guns as safely as possible and be good stewards of taxpayer dollars,” Erland said in an email.

In smaller towns, auctions have helped to supplement police budgets.

Gun debate: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signs into law bill allowing armed teachers

Frey, the sheriff in Henry County, said gun auctions bring extra funds for vehicle maintenance, new uniforms and other needs.

“We don’t want to just destroy them because they’re usable guns,” he said. “Before the law, I saw a lot of nice guns torched in half.”

Frey said winning bidders will go through the state background check process and anyone that fails will be disqualified from purchase.

Gibson County Sheriff Paul Thomas said his rural West Tennessee department seizes a fraction of guns each year compared to big cities, so auctioning makes sense. But he can see how other, larger departments may not want to recirculate weapons.

“We get a lot of people who are drunk with shotguns as opposed to AK47s,” he said.

A debate in Kentucky

In Kentucky, a battle has been brewing over a nearly 30-year-old law that forces police agencies to sell seized guns to the State Police to sell at auction .

The law has been staunchly criticized by Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, especially after it was announced that a gun used to kill five people at a bank shooting in the city last year would go to auction.

In a push to skirt the law, Greenberg last year directed Louisville police to remove the firing pins from every seized weapon heading for auction. While previous efforts to change the law have failed, a bipartisan bill is now pending that would require Kentucky State Police to destroy confiscated guns used in violence crimes.

The Kentucky State Police held their most recent audition on April 23. The winning bid for the whole cache was $161,500.

What Memphis neighborhoods have seen the most home sales in 2024? Here's how they rank

journey in memphis tennessee

Most Memphis neighborhoods saw an increase in the number homes sold in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to data released by Memphis Area Association of Realtors .

It was a big quarter for many neighborhoods: Six saw an increase of more than 21% in the number of units sold.

Shelby County as a whole saw an 8.3% increase year-over-year in the number of homes sold, climbing from 3,021 to 3,271.

Memphis neighborhoods by number of homes sold in 2024

The majority of Memphis neighborhoods sold more homes in the first quarter of 2024 compared to a year ago. The data compares the number of homes sold from January to March 2024 to the same period in 2023:

  • South Memphis: 312 units; up from 235, the largest increase at 32.8%
  • Hickory Hill: 232 units; up from 184, a 26.1% increase
  • Midtown: 208 units; up from 196, a 6.1% increase
  • Whitehaven: 208 units; up from 167, a 24.6% increase
  • Raleigh: 205 units; up from 167, a 22.8% increase
  • Berclair: 169 units; up from 139, a 21.6% increase
  • Parkway Village: 126 units; up from 116, an 8.6% increase
  • Downtown: 112 units up from 88; a 27.3% increase.

In contrast, four neighborhoods sold fewer homes in 2024 Q1 compared to 2023 Q1:

  • Cordova: 338 units; down from 349, a 3.2% decrease
  • Frayser: 234 units; down from 243, a 3.7% decrease
  • East Memphis: 512 units; down from 530, the smallest decrease at 3.4%
  • Southwind: 12 units; down from 25, the largest decrease at 52%.

MEMPHIS REAL ESTATE: These Memphis neighborhoods have seen the biggest home price changes in 2024

Why have home sales increased in most Memphis neighborhoods?

What is causing such a sharp uptick in home sales this past quarter? The answer is simple: There are more people looking to sell, and with interest rates rising again, buyers in this market are serious about getting a home.

"Sales are up because there's increased inventory," said Joel Hobson, principal broker and owner of Hobson Realtors. "People can actually find a house now and they can even buy a house sometimes contingent on the sale of their current house, which they couldn't do when the market was crazy during the pandemic."

Hobson said that while it's still a sellers' market, it's not even close to how the market was in 2020 and 2021, when buyers were forced to make decisions on buying a home extremely quickly. Ironically, now that buyers have more time to look at different options, do inspections and actually make an informed decision, they're more likely to end up buying a home.

"If they're not forced to make a decision in 20 minutes, and they can maybe go look at it a second time, do inspections, ask for repairs... during the pandemic you had to buy it as is. If you didn't approve the inspections, the next guy in line would," Hobson said. "I really think the market has evolved into a much fairer market for everybody. It's freed people up to feel like they can buy a house in their normal circumstances."

Memphis Man Sentenced for Possession of 25 ‘Switch’ Devices

Memphis, TN – A federal judge has sentenced a Memphis resident to five years in federal prison for possessing 25 machine gun conversion devices, more commonly known as “switches”.  United States Attorney Kevin Ritz announced the sentence today.

According to information presented in court, U. S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted a package from an overseas shipper addressed to Roosevelt Wilson , 43, which was found to contain 25 machine gun conversion devices. These devices significantly enhance the rate of fire of a semi-automatic firearm, converting a gun designed to fire a bullet and quickly reload after each trigger pull to instead function as a fully automatic weapon.

On February 28, 2023, officers made a controlled delivery of the package to the address listed.  Wilson retrieved the package and the officers attempted arrest.  The defendant then led officers on a high-speed pursuit through a residential neighborhood, tossing the package and a firearm out of his vehicle.  Both were discovered along his path of travel. The firearm was later identified as a .40 caliber privately made, Glock-style gun with no serial numbers; it also had a machine gun conversion device affixed to it.

Wilson pled guilty on January 12 to possession of 25 machine gun conversion devices and to receiving and possessing 25 machine gun conversion devices that had been unlawfully imported into the United States. On April 25, 2024, United States District Thomas L. Parker sentenced Wilson to 60 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.

Homeland Security Investigations and U. S. Customs and Border Protection investigated this case on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security.  The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Southaven Police Department, and the United States Marshals Service also provided assistance.

United States Attorney Ritz thanked Assistant United States Attorney Eileen Kuo, who prosecuted this case, as well as law enforcement partners who investigated the case.

Post falsely claims Tennessee National Guard troops were sent to Memphis | Fact check

The claim: National Guard troops were sent to Memphis, Tennessee, in April 2024

An April 26 Facebook post ( direct link , archive link ) claims troops were sent to a major city in Tennessee.

“Memphis so bad the national guards are on the way (sic),” reads the post.

It was shared more than 100 times in four days.

A spokesperson for the mayor of Memphis said the claim is false. The Tennessee National Guard has not received any formal requests for help in the city, a spokesperson said.

No requests for troops in Memphis, guard says

The claim in the Facebook post is false, said Penelope Huston , a spokesperson for Memphis Mayor Paul Young.

As of April 30, the National Guard had not received any formal requests to send troops to the city, Capt. Kealy Moriarty told USA TODAY.

“While the Tennessee National Guard is always ready to respond and help the community we serve in, there has not been an official request for support at this time,” Moriarty said in an email.

Fact check : National Guard, FEMA were activated for a prior eclipse, contrary to viral claim

It is unclear what, if any, specific event is referenced in the Facebook post, which contains no context or explanation.

Sending troops to a major U.S. city for any reason would generate a significant amount of coverage from legitimate media outlets, but there is no such reporting on the topic. The most recent credible reports linking the guard to Memphis were published in November 2023, when multiple state lawmakers from the area said their constituents pushed them to ask the guard for help in reducing violent crime, which included the fatal shooting of a researcher at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital . A Memphis pastor made a similar request three months earlier, WHBQ-TV reported .

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s most recent authorization to deploy troops came in May 2023, when 100 Tennessee National Guard members were assigned to help secure the southern U.S. border , according to a search of the website where those announcements are posted.

Lee also previously placed the guard on active duty in June 2020 in Memphis and other cities across the state where protests were held following George Floyd’s death, WREG-TV reported .

USA TODAY reached out to the Facebook user who shared the post but did not immediately receive a response.
