There is an interesting story behind the origin of the dam. It is believed that Lord Rama cursed two natives Koravan (man) and Korathi (woman) to stones for staring at Sita while she was bathing. They begged Rama for Mercy as they never stayed separate. Lord Rama then blessed them that they will stay together for the years to come.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, the Idukki Wildlife is located in the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki at an altitude of 450 – 750 ft above the sea level. The sanctuary, flanked on 3 sides by the tranquil waters of Idukki Lake, is housed amidst picturesque settings of tropical evergreen & semi-evergreen forests, meadows, and deciduous trees. The Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the  places to visit in Idukki, houses hordes of wild elephants. The other species from the animal kingdom include bison, sambar, deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, Malabar Giant Squirrel, wild boars, and tigers. Idukki Arch Dam

The Idukki dam is constructed across the Periyar River, in a valley between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills in Kerala. The dam, which is one of the  Idukki tourist places, constructed by the Kerala government in 1975 and supports 780 MW hydroelectric power station that draws electricity from this dam. Ilaveezha Poonchira

Ilaveezha Poonchira, the Shangri-La of Kerala, situated in Melukavu village in Kottayam district is one of the  places to visit in Idukki. Located at the foothills of the 3 floral hillocks – Mankunnu, Kudayathur, and Thonippara Hills at Kanjar, the bewitching valley is spread across thousands of acres. “Ila-veezha Poonchira” which means “the pond of flowers where the leaves do not fall” has its roots in Mahabharata. The Hill View Park houses a natural water body, where visitors can enjoy boat rides. Nadukani Pavilion, a 2-storey building constructed and managed by the State Electricity Board, atop a hill is encompassed by the vast stretches of hayfields flanked by gargantuan rocks. Situated at an altitude of 3000 ft, it offers bird’s-eye view of the Idukki and Ernakulam districts. Thommankuthu Waterfalls is a series of 12 falls or kuthus (locally known) spread over an area of 5 kms and fall from a height of 40 meters. The 12 falls that vary in height and pass through the lush evergreen forests, presents a remarkable sight. The waterfall is eponymous of its founder, Thommachan Kuruvinakunnel, who introduced this beautiful falls to the world. The rich flora and fauna around the waterfall hypnotize the visitors. It is an alluring destination for trekking as it takes you through caves and sleepy hamlets of the tribals. The visitors can enjoy a bath at the falls in summer, but not during the monsoon as the level of water increases. Distance : 20 km from Thodupuzha Timings: All day. Malankara Dam

Malankara Dam is built on the Thodupuzha River, which is the tributary of the Muvattupuzha river, for irrigation purpose. Malankara Lake, an artificial lake formed as a part of the Muvattupuzha valley irrigation project is spread over 11 sq.kms. The visitors can enjoy boating and fishing in the lake. Ramakkalmedu

Ramakkalmedu, situated 3500 ft above the sea level, presents a bird’s eye view of the countryside of the neighboring Tamil Nadu State. The striking feature of the Ramakkalmedu is the historical monument of Kuravan and Kurathi, a huge statue that illustrates the Sangam period of Kerala. Rama-Kal-medu literally means “Land of Rama’s stone” or “ Land where Lord Rama set his holy foot”. Another unique feature of Ramakkalmedu is the prevailing wind conditions, irrespective of the seasons. It offers excellent trekking options to adventure enthusiasts. Sita Devi Lake

Another of the  Idukki tourist places, Sita Devi Lake, is located at an altitude of 1800 meters (5900 ft) above the sea level. The lake also referred to as Devikulam, which means lake of the Goddess, is supposedly linked to the epic Ramayana. According to the myth, it is said that Goddess Sita Devi, the consort of Lord Rama, had bathed in these waters. Tourists prefer to take a dip in the waters of this lake, not only due to its sacredness but also because of the purported curative powers of its mineral waters. The distant cloud-capped the Blue Mountains, the velvety rolling evergreen hills, and the natural vegetation of slim red, blue, and yellow gum trees hypnotize the visitors. Kulamavu Dam

Kulamavu Dam, one of the triumvirate dams of the Idukki reservoir project, is constructed in 1961 to restrict the flow of water into Kallivally rivulet. The 100 ft gravity dam built of concrete or stone masonry on the Periyar River stretches out between rocky mountains and forms 33 sq.km reservoir. Kulamavu, one of the  places to visit in Idukki, is also a famous hill station in Idukki district. The 60 sq. km artificial lake formed as a result of the construction of the 3 dams, add scenic beauty to the rugged rocky terrain and verdant vegetation around it. The hill station charms the visitors with the picturesque countryside, rubber and spice plantations. The visitors go gaga over the various species of birds such as darter or snakebird, kingfisher etc. that inhabit the hill station. Mangala Devi Temple

Mangala Devi temple is a historic temple situated in the dense forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Idukki district of Kerala bordering Tamil Nadu State. The fable prevalent among the natives elucidates that Kannagi, a devout Tamil woman, had wreaked destruction on the Pandyan dynasty through her curse for unjustly executing her husband, Kovalan in a theft case. Kannagi is extolled as the epitome of chastity and is bestowed the position of the goddess. The ancient Tamilakam King, Chera Chenguttuvan, constructed this temple, around 2000 yrs ago. So, the temple is known for Pandiyan architecture. Apart from Mangala Devi, the idols of Lord Shiva, Lord Karuppuswamy and sanctorium of Ganesh adorn the temple. Only during Chitrapournami festival, which falls in the Summer season (April/May), the devotees can visit and offer the prayers. The 12 km stretch to the temple can be accessed only through Jeep. Nedumkandam Hills

Nedumkandam Hill, one of the Idukki tourist places, is located at 3200 ft above the sea level at the taluk headquarters of Nedumkandam in Idukki district. The place is popularly known as the land of spices produces coffee, cardamom, and pepper. The Hill offers a panoramic view of the countryside with cloud-covered mountains, lush green rolling hills, plantations of cardamom and pepper, and pristine air. Periyar National Park, also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve, is in the mountainous Western Ghats of Kerala, southern India. There are, now estimated counts of 40 tigers in the Periyar National Park. The major four species of primates are also found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Gee's Golden Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. Periyar is also being considered as the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which can rarely be seen but commends its presence.

Mathikettan Shola National Park

Mathikettan Shola National Park is a 12.82 km² national park in Poopara village of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki district of Kerala state. It is home to beautiful and rare animals like tigers, panthers, wild elephants, giant grizzled squirrel, flying squirrels, spotted deer and Nilgiri tahrs. The park abounds in snakes such asking cobras, pythons, vipers and rat snakes, turtles, crocodiles and lizards. The national park is a biodiversity hotspot and plays a vital role in safeguarding wildlife in the region. The terrain acts as a natural defense in the protection of the animals and protects their natural habitat.

Idukki Arch Dam

The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is a 168.91 m (554 ft) tall arch dam. The dam stands between the two mountains – Kuravanmala (839)m and Kurathimala (925)m. It was constructed and is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station At 167.68 metres, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia and third tallest arch dam. It started generating power on 4 October 1975.[1] Technically, the dam type is a concrete double curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.

Meesapulimala

Meesapulimala is an Indian peak, the next south of the second highest peak of the Western Ghats on the Idukki District and Theni District border. Its peak is 2,640 metres above sea level. The name derives from its appearance from the southwest of a tiger with prominent whiskers Meesappulimala a destination for the highly adventurous is the second highest peak in the Western Ghats and a trekking trail via Rhodo Valley. 

Pampadum Shola National Park

Pampadum Shola National Park is the smallest national park in Idukki district of Kerala in India. It is on the border with Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu The fauna includes several   threatened, rare or endemic species. The numbers of rare and endemic species found were high when the extent of Shola forest is taken into consideration. The species Parantica nilgiriensis (Nymphalidae) which is restricted to some hills of South India and listed as threatened by IUCN was recorded to be highly abundant in the area. Besides this, other rare species include Libythea lepita, Pantoporia ranga, Rohana pariasatis, Zipoetis saintis and Jamides dalecto. There are about 14 species of birds, 9 species of mammals, 100 species of butterflies and 93 species of moths recorded from the Shola. The important animals found in the Park are elephant, gaur, leopard, wild boar, sambar and common langur.

Eravikulam National Park

The Cheruthoni Dam, located in Idukki District, Kerala is a 138m tall concrete gravity dam. This dam was constructed in 1976 as part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project along with two other dams Idukki and Kulamavu. The water impounded by these three dams of Idukki, Cheruthoni & Kulamavu has formed a single reservoir spread over 60 sq.km on a height of 2300 ft above Mean Sea Level. The Idukki Dam is a double curvature arch dam constructed across Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two granite hills and is the tallest double curvature arch dam in Asia.

Cheeyappara Waterfalls

The Cheeyappara Waterfall is on the Kochi - Madurai Highway, between Neriamangalam and Adimali. It is in Idukki district, Kerala, India. The Cheeyappara Waterfall cascades down in seven steps. Anamudi Peak

​ Anamudi, the 2,695-m high mountain which stands tall in the Eravikulam National Park is the pride of Kerala. It is the highest point in India outside the Himalayan Mountain Ranges. Anamudi, together with the Eravikulam Park, is home to one of the largest surviving populations of Asian elephants, Gaurs and the Nilgiri Tahrs. The mountain, covered with evergreen forests and inhabited by endemic flora and fauna and a vibrant avian life, is a paradise in the wild. The green forest is also the source of some large and scenic rivers in Kerala and the nearby State of Tamil Nadu.

​ Perched 7000 ft. above sea level, is break taking in the size and diversity of flora and fauna. A former hunting preserve of the British planters, the Park today exemplifies wildlife at its best. It was declared a Sanctuary in 1975 with the intention of protecting the indigenous population of Nilgiri Tahr (highly endangered mountain goat). However, in 1978, it was declared as a National Park considering it’s ecological, faunal, geomorphological and Zoological Significance. This is also the land of “Neelakurinji”, the flower that blooms once in twelve years. The Park is breath takingly beautiful and is easily comparable to the best of mountain ranges in the Alps.  With the highest peak south of the Himalayas – the Anamudi, located here, nature enthusiasts have ample opportunities for trekking expeditions and wildlife spotting.

Hill View Park

It is supervised by Kerala Wildlife and Forest department and Munnar Wildlife Division, along with other National Parks and Sanctuary like Erevikulam National Park, Mathikettan Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Pambadum Shola National Park and the Kurinjimala Sanctuary

Anchuruli Waterfalls

Anchuruli is an off beat destination near Kattappana. This is around 8km from Kattapana towards idukki township. This is a beautiful place for photography and to see sun set between 3.00pm - 6.00pm. The only drawback is no safety for the visitors to climb down to the tunnel view area and anybody can go inside the tunnel without any restrictions The water that comes from Erattayar River is used for the Idukki hydro-electric project. A tunnel which is 2 km long passes through Erattayar and Anchuruli carrying water to the lake. Though the tunnel is dangerous, it is a fun place to take a stroll at especially for all the adventure lovers.

Anakkara is a geographic area of around 50 square kilometres that spans across Vandanmedu, Chakkupallam Panchayats in the Udumbanchola Taluk of Idukki District. Anakkara is the administrative capital of Chakkupallam Grama Panchayat and Anakkara Revenue Village

Theni in Tamil Nadu; around 60km, serves as the nearest railway station to reach Idukki. Other than this, visitors can also board a train to Changanassery (95km) and Kottayam (114km) to reach Idukki.

Kochi International Airport at a distance of 132km serves as the nearest airport to reach Idukki. Upon arrival at this airport, visitors can avail regular buses or private taxis to reach the hill station.

Best Time to Visit Idukki:

1 Winter (October to February):

Winter is undoubtedly the best time to visit Idukki! During this season, the entire of the hill station gets covered with the magical mist and showcases an irresistible charm. Even though the temperature remains below the average level, visitors can indulge in an array of tourist activities and enjoy the enchanting beauty of Idukki.

2 Summer (March to June):

Starting from March, Idukki starts experiencing a rise in the mercury level. The days might get warmer, but evenings are adorned with a drop in the temperature. As the atmosphere remains clear, visitors can enjoy sightseeing in Idukki at its best during the summers.

3 Monsoon (July to September):

Idyllic eco-lodges near Idukki dam welcome tourists

The Tourism Department’s eco-lodges near the Idukki dam were recently opened to the public and tourists have been enthusiastically checking it out too. The tourist facility containing 12 cottages is constructed on 25 acres. The lodges are built completely with wood, following the Kerala architectural style. Those who arrive from Ernakulam and Thodupuzha can reach the site by travelling 1.5 km further on the main road from Cheruthoni.

Tourists staying at the eco-lodges in the Vazhathope grama panchayat can not only enjoy the nature-friendly accommodation but also visit tourist centres such as the Cheruthoni dam, Dam View Park, Idukki DTPC Park, Migration Memorial Tourism Village, and Calvary Mount, which are situated within a 10-km radius. An amount of Rs 6.72 crore was incurred on the project. While the State government sanctioned Rs 2.78 crore, the Central government allotted Rs 5.05 crore through the Swadesh Darshan project. The daily tariff for the facility is Rs 4,130. The eco-lodges can be booked online through the Tourism department’s website www.Keralaturism.org.

മൂന്നാർ∙ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് തിരക്കുകൾ അവസാനിച്ചതോടെ മധ്യവേനലവധി ആഘോഷങ്ങൾക്കായി മൂന്നാറിൽ സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ തിരക്ക് ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇന്നലെ മുതലാണ് സഞ്ചാരികൾ എത്തിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്. ഇനിയുള്ള ഒരു മാസം  മൂന്നാറിൽ സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ തിരക്ക് ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്നാണ് പ്രതീക്ഷ. മലയാളികളെ കൂടാതെ അയൽ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽനിന്നുള്ളവരും സന്ദർശനത്തിനായി എത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. തിരക്ക് വർധിച്ചതോടെ പ്രധാന വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളായ മാട്ടുപ്പെട്ടി, എക്കോ പോയിന്റ്, പഴയ മൂന്നാർ, ഫ്ലവർ ഗാർഡൻ, കുണ്ടള, മറയൂർ റോഡ്, ടൗൺ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ഇന്നലെ പകൽ ഗതാഗത കുരുക്ക് രൂക്ഷമായിരുന്നു.

ഗതാഗതക്കുരുക്ക്: നടപടികളുമായി പൊലീസ്  മൂന്നാറിൽ മധ്യവേനലവധിക്കാലത്ത് സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ തിരക്ക് ആരംഭിച്ചതോടെ ഗതാഗത കുരുക്കും അനിഷ്ട സംഭവങ്ങളും ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നതിനായി പ്രധാന സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം പൊലീസിനെ നിയമിക്കുമെന്ന് ഡിവൈഎസ്പി അലക്സ് ബേബി പറഞ്ഞു. ഇതിനായി സബ്ഡിവിഷനിലെ മറ്റ് സ്റ്റേഷനുകളിൽനിന്ന് പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരെ മൂന്നാറിൽ നിയമിക്കും. ക്യാംപിൽനിന്നു പൊലീസുകാരെ കൂടുതൽ വിട്ടുകിട്ടുന്നതിനായി ജില്ലാ പൊലീസ് മേധാവിയോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുമെന്നും ഡിവൈഎസ്പി പറഞ്ഞു.കൂടാതെ തിരക്കുള്ള ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ മാട്ടുപ്പെട്ടി, ദേവികുളം ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽനിന്നു വരുന്ന വാഹനങ്ങൾ പോസ്റ്റോഫിസ് കവലയിൽനിന്നു ദേശീയ പാതയിലെ ബൈപാസ് വഴി കടത്തിവിടുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.
