Flight  – Wherever you’re coming from in the world, you can reach Krabi by flight, with layovers in Bangkok or nearby countries. The airport is closer to Krabi Town and we used a Grab to get to the airport. Check flights on Skyscanner!

Bus – One of the most budget-friendly ways to arrive in Krabi is by bus ! When arriving by bus, the terminal is outside of Krabi town, we grabbed a shared taxi that waits for people to fill up. The price is per person and it leaves when there are enough people inside. Bus trips can be booked with any local travel agent and the prices are usually the same.

Ferry – If you’re staying in Ao Nang, arriving by ferry is perfect! Once you arrive at Nopparat Thara Pier, there will be many local taxis waiting to take you to your accommodation. It’s possible to negotiate a price or pair up with other travellers. Or book your ferry on 12.Go !

How to get around Krabi

The region of Krabi is huge! There are different ways to get around Krabi to each location.

Renting a scooter : We rented a scooter from Ao Nang on our 3 day Krabi itinerary to drive amongst the beautiful limestone cliffs and visit Krabi Town

Taxis & Songthaews : Krabi has a lot of choices when it comes to taxis and Grab also works here. Songthaews are usually found in Ao Nang around the pier and many local companies offer their own taxi services. You won’t be stuck trying to get around Krabi.

Longtail boats: These are the only way to get to Railay Beach and other small islands around Krabi.

Walking: Although there are some sights far away from Ao Nang or Krabi Town, both places are very walkable and walking is the best way to visit the markets, shops and restaurants.

Exploring Railay Beach, Krabi

Moving onto our 3 days in Krabi itinerary! Here’s our recommended plan for your trip and a few alternatives along the way. It’s possible to base yourself in Ao Nang or Krabi Town for this Krabi 3 day itinerary and mix the days up depending on the weather!

Day 1 – Ao Nang & Railay Beach

On day 1 of your Krabi itinerary, we’ll show you how to explore the lovely coastal town of Ao Nang.

Arriving in Ao Nang

When most travellers talk about Krabi, they’re usually referring to Ao Nang and the gorgeous islands and beaches in the area. If you only have 3 days in Krabi and enjoy some nightlife, we recommend basing yourself in Ao Nang.

Ao Nang has changed over the years due to tourism. There are small areas within the markets that feel like Patong (in Phuket), with many bars, music and entertainment. There are a few fast-food chains that made it here amongst all the other Thai and international food.

It may not be the most glamorous town in Thailand but it’s the gateway to the most beautiful region and that’s what we’ll show you in this Krabi 3 day itinerary.

If you’re staying in Krabi Town, you can reach Ao Nang by taxi, songthaew or renting a scooter. The journey only takes 30 minutes so you can visit multiple times on your trip.

Wherever you’re staying, drop off your bags and head to Ao Nang Beach to look for a small hut where you can buy tickets to Railay Beach. On GoogleMaps, it’s called – Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club .

Ao Nang Beach

Visit Railay Beach

A trip to Railay Beach has to be at the top of your list when spending 3 days in Krabi. It’s one of the most picturesque places in Thailand and the scenery will leave you speechless!

The best way to get to Ao Nang Beach is by longtail boat as the limestone cliffs get in the way of driving to the area. Head to Ao Nang Longtail Boat Service Club to buy your roundtrip tickets (฿200 return) and you’ll soon be on your way to the beautiful beach.

The journey takes around 15 minutes by longtail boat, however, the boats will wait until there are enough passengers on board. Luckily Railay is popular to visit so the wait shouldn’t be more than 20 minutes.

Once you arrive, there are a few things to do in the area! It’s not just one beach and there’s even accommodation if you’re ever interested to stay the night.

  • Phra Nang Beach – Perfect crystal clear water and views of the limestone rocks out at sea.
  • Railay Beach – The main beach connects to the central strip of restaurants.
  • Phra Nang Beach – The most beautiful beach!
  • Rock Climbing – Krabi is one of the best places to go rock climbing!
  • Phra Nang Nai Cave – An impressive cave but a small viewing area (a fee to enter)

You can also join a Krabi 7 Islands Sunset Tour to explore more incredible islands in the region.

There’s plenty of cafes, restaurants and little shops here to browse. We grabbed some food at Govinda’s At The Beach and picked up shakes from nearby stalls. When you’re ready to go back to Ao Nang, wait for the next longtail boat on Railay Beach and use your return ticket.

Spending a while in Krabi? Think about Volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare: Thailand !

Spend the evening in Ao Nang

After spending the day in the postcard-worthy region of Thailand, explore the craziness of Ao Nang.

Ao Nang is filled with restaurants and shops along the seafront and down the main road. It’s definitely a busy area and has great nightlife too! Check out the Ao Nang Night Market and have an evening walk around the area.

Day 2 – Krabi Town, Temples & Viewpoints

After enjoying the beaches and coast, it’s time for a mainland adventure on this 3 day Krabi itinerary. We highly recommend renting a scooter to explore the region on this day, however, it’s totally possible by taxi. Ask your accommodation to arrange transport for you or join a group tour to take you around!

Hike up to Tiger Cave Temple

The first place to visit is the impressive Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea). We’ll warn you now, that it’s not a short hike but the views are amazing! It’s best to visit in the early morning before the heat of the day makes the walk 10 times harder.

The Tiger Cave Temple sits on the peak of a limestone rock with a hike of 1260 steps and these steps range in size! At the top is a beautiful golden Buddha and panoramic views of Krabi. There’s also fresh water at the top so make sure you carry your reusable water bottle!

The step counter is marked every now and again on the poles leading up to the top and it’s honestly quite a tough climb if you’re not a hiker. Don’t be afraid of taking breaks!

Viewpoint from Tiger Cave Temple

There’s also a few monkeys to spot along the way but there are signs everywhere warning you to look after your belongings, especially if you have food.

On the ground, you can learn about the Tiger Cave Temple. It was once named after a monk when he witnessed tigers roaming around the cave during meditation. The tigers disappeared but it still holds its name Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple). Also, visit the Bodhisattva Guanyin Pagoda.

The Tiger Cave Temple is located just outside of Krabi Town and it’s a popular destination for travellers, so there will be taxis going there. We rented a scooter from Ao Nang and the drive is gorgeous! There’s a huge car park with restaurants and refreshments.

➤ Join a group tour to explore the Tiger Cave Temple and the Emerald Pool!

Pagoda at Tiger Cave Temple

Alternatively, if you want a less demanding hike, check out Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint on the east side of Krabi.

Explore Krabi Town

Krabi Town is the heart of the Krabi province and it’s often overlooked by travellers only passing through to the Tiger Cave Temple. There are a few things worth visiting in the town on your Krabi 3 day itinerary and the night markets are better than Ao Nang!

Wat Kaew Korawaram

Start with gazing at the beautiful Buddhist temple – Wat Kaeo Korawaram. The temple is hard to miss when wandering around Krabi Town as there are not many other big temples in the area.

There’s a long staircase with golden snakes wrapped around the rails leading up to the temple. It’s worth a visit on your 3 day Krabi itinerary if you’re in the area.

Spending 3 days in Krabi exploring Wat Kaew Korawaram

More things to do in Krabi Town

  • Krabi Walking Street – the main area in Krabi Town
  • The Mud Crabs Sculpture – walk along the river and find the crab statue!
  • Krabi Urban Forest – walk amongst the mangroves near Krabi Town!
  • Shopping Mall – a small shopping mall with air con!
  • Krabi Night Market – indulge in Thai street food!

The best way to end your evening in Krabi Town is to wander around the night markets. Our favourite Thai street food is a classic pad Thai and mango sticky rice (we don’t eat meat!) but there are so many other amazing Thai dishes to try!

Day 3 – Hot Springs & Relaxing

On the last day of your 3 day Krabi itinerary, take the opportunity to visit more natural wonders in the Krabi region. Both of these places are located in east Krabi about 1 hour away, so you’ll need transportation or a taxi to reach them.

Relax in the Krabi Hot Springs

Start your day with a visit to Krabi Hot Springs. It’s best to visit in the early morning for cooler air and quieter pools. Rent a scooter for the day or find to take you.

The natural hot spring is quite small and due to the number of visitors from both locals and tourists, another pool was built with the same water to accommodate more people! The hot spring will feel the same, but the real natural one is surrounded by trees.

There is a ฿200 entry fee for the Krabi Hot Springs, but it’s totally worth visiting on your 3 days in Krabi. Here’s the location for  Krabi Hot Springs and there are some food options here too.

Relaxing in Krabi Hot Springs on a 3 day Krabi itinerary

Take a dip in Emerald Pool

A short drive around the corner from the hot springs is Emerald Pool which is absolutely beautiful! The minerals make the water turn a lovely shade of emerald and it’s a natural beauty to see! It’s even better when the sun is shining!

Located in Thung Teao Forest Natural Park , it’s a lovely walk through the jungle to reach Emerald Pool which is something different on your 3 days in Krabi. You can also bathe in the pools, although it can sometimes get busy!

There’s another ฿200 entrance fee, so if you’re on a budget you may want to choose one of these. Although it’s quite a drive out here to only visit one!

Check out our Southeast Asia budget guide to plan your trip to Thailand with our travel costs!

Watch the Sunset at Ao Nang Beach

The best way to end your 3 days in Krabi is with a sunset on the beach. Finish your trip in Ao Nang and browse around the many shops or just pick a bar and chill.

We stayed in J Mansion on one of our trips to Ao Nang and they have an amazing view from the roof!

Where to stay in Krabi

The best area to stay for your 3 days in Krabi is Ao Nang or Krabi Town . Both are the perfect base to explore the region with great options for food.

Ao Nang definitely has more accommodation options as it’s more touristy by the beach and you’ll find more nightlife here too. We’ve stayed in Ao Nang three times and Krabi Town once and would recommend Ao Nang if you want a little more entertainment in the evening!

3 Day Krabi Itinerary Breakdown

Day 1 – Ao Nang & Railay Beach / Day 2 – Tiger Cave Temple & Krabi Town / Day 3 – Hot Springs & Ao Nang Beach

How many days to spend in Krabi

We recommend spending at least 2 days in Krabi to visit Railay Beach with a quick visit to Krabi Town. On our first trip to Krabi, we had to extend our time there because we couldn’t fit everything in on one day. One day in Krabi is the bare minimum to see Railay Beach and is probably best done on a day trip.

With 3 days in Krabi, you can explore the best highlights in the area with time to relax at the beaches and hike up to amazing viewpoints.

What to do with 1 night in Krabi?

If you only have 1 night in Krabi, we recommend staying in Ao Nang and taking a quick boat trip to Railay Beach. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful spots in Krabi and it’s really easy to get to. The airport is only 30 minutes away from Ao Nang and you can even stop at Krabi Town on the way!

What to pack for 3 days in Krabi?

Krabi has tropical weather so a swimming costume is essential! We recommend packing clothes for hot weather including sandals and maybe a snorkel!

Check out our guide on how we pack for Southeast Asia using a 40L backpack each! We’ve written a full packing list full of tips.

Here are a few travel essentials we enjoy using:

  • International Worldwide Travel Adaptor  – The best adaptor when visiting multiple countries.
  • Amazon Packing Cubes  – The easiest way to pack your bag!
  • Sawyer Mini Water Filter  – Save plastic and use a water filter on your Krabi itinerary!
  • Stainless Steel Water Bottle  – The ultimate travel item is a reusable water bottle.
  • Waterproof Bag 20L with Waterproof Phone Case  – Keep your valuables safe and dry on boat trips!
  • Joby GorillaPod 3K Pro Kit  – The best small and lightweight tripod to take photos of yourself independently. We have a  Joby GorillaPod  and pair it with our  Sony A6000 .

Krabi Town on a Krabi 3 day itinerary

Where to go after Krabi?

Krabi is the perfect location to explore other islands in South Thailand. We highly recommend checking out our 2 week South Thailand Itinerary as we mention some of the amazing islands you can discover.

As Krabi has an international airport, you can even catch flights to other areas of Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore.

We spent 2 months volunteering at Lanta Animal Welfare in Koh Lanta, which is apart of the Krabi region. If you have some spare time, this is perfect to do on your Thailand trip!

Is Krabi worth visiting?

Yes! Krabi is one of the easiest destinations to visit in Thailand, along with Phuket, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. It’s truly a beautiful area and really shows off the scenery of Thailand.

There’s plenty of things to do in Krabi to spend 3 days or more. We’ve visited Krabi a few times already including the surrounding area and we would stay again on another Thai islands trip.

#8 – Wat Tham Sua – Possibly one of the most important places to visit in Krabi

Wat Tham Sua

What to do there: Getting to Wat Tham Sua isn’t all that easy. There are 1,237 steps to reach the top of the caves, where you can see the Footprints of the Buddha. If you make it that far, you’ll also be treated to stunning, panoramic views of the ocean and the islands. This view alone makes the hike worthwhile. #9 – Klong Thom Hot Springs – Cool place to see in Krabi with friends!

Klong Thom Hot Springs

  • A relaxing natural hot spring set against a stunning natural backdrop.

The Klong Thom Hot Springs offer water that’s warmed inside the volcanic chambers of Klong Thom. Set against the lush greenery, it’s a haven for anyone who needs a rejuvenation.

#10 – The Khao Khanab Nam Mountains

The Khao Khanab Nam Mountains

  • One of the most famous places in Krabi.
  • These mountains are a natural wonder and instantly recognizable from magazines and television shows about Thailand.

Why it’s so awesome: These mountains sit on either side of the river and are absolutely stunning to look at. They also have a series of caves at the bottom that are filled with stalagmites and stalactites as well as human skeletons. The stories behind these skeletons are contradictory and varied, some say they belonged to people who were trapped by rising water. Still, others say they were the victims of pirates. Whatever their story, they add a slightly creepy edge to this otherwise stunning location.

What to do there: You’ll need to hire a boat or travel by ferry to this Krabi must-see, but it’s a short trip and worth the price. Once you’re there you can go swimming or explore the caves. You can also climb one of the mountains and enjoy the stunning views or get your adrenalin pumping by diving from the cliffs.

#11 – Susan Hoi – One of Krabi’s coolest historical sites!

Susan Hoi

  • The geological wonders at this site are rare, slightly creepy, and well worth seeing.
  • There’s also a beach, a Chinese Temple, and a mangrove forest to explore nearby.

Why it’s so awesome: This area of Krabi dates back around 40 million years. It’s a fossilized fish cemetery that was created when limestone deposits covered millions of fish shells and fossilized them. This sounds a little dry and academic, but the end result is 200 meters of shiny, beautiful remains left by long ago creatures set against pristine natural surroundings.

What to do there: This is one of the more unusual things to do in Krabi and it’s popular among geology buffs and treasure hunters. There are only three cemeteries like this in the world, so it’s worth exploring just for the story! When you’re done with the cemetery, spend some time on the beautiful, pristine beach at Susan Hoi, explore the Chinese temple, or take a hike through the mangroves.

#12 – The Krabi Town Night Market – A must-see for foodies!

The Krabi Town Night Market

  • A great place to eat and enjoy the community vibe.
  • If you’re looking for souvenirs when you’re visiting Krabi, you’ll find them at this market.
  • Just remember to haggle to get the best prices!

Why it’s so awesome: Night markets are everywhere across Thailand and the one in Krabi Town is really worth experiencing. It includes more than 70 food stores as well as stores that carry every type of souvenir you could want to buy. Sometimes, the local school children put on shows to collect money, and this just adds to the friendly, community atmosphere of the attraction.

What to do there: The market is open Friday to Sunday in the evenings and is one of the best places to eat in Krabi. Wander the stalls and try the snacks, shop for souvenirs, and make sure you stop at the coconut ice cream stall. This is a favorite snack throughout Thailand, but the store at the Krabi night market is famous for the quality of its ice cream.

#19 – Tonsai – An unknown (but awesome!) place to see in Krabi!

Tonsai

  • One of the best places to visit in Krabi for rock climbing.
  • There are a few bars and shops in the jungle, but you’ll probably need to take some food with you to this beach to ensure that you don’t starve.
  • This is a favorite backpacker stop, mostly because of the relaxed jungle vibe.

Why it’s so awesome: A lot of the beaches in Krabi are heavily developed. They’re still beautiful, but sometimes you just want one that’s surrounded by nature rather than by cement. Although there are plans to build resorts on Tonsai beach, the work is slow going. As a result, this beach is still secluded and there are only a few bars and shops around it, all of them nestled in the jungle.

What to do there: This is the perfect beach to relax and take in some rays. It has that laidback vibe that so many travelers look for in a beach, so just soak it up. Tonsai beach is also a popular spot for rock climbing if you aren’t afraid of heights. You can hike from Railay beach to Tonsaid, it’s only a short trip, or take a water taxi. The beach is fairly isolated, so there isn’t really any other way to get there or to get back to your hotel afterwards.

Krabi is one of the most relaxing places ever and once you get there you’ll see exactly why. It can’t help it, being home to 130 beautiful islands.

One of the most epic things about Krabi is that many of its isolated beaches are accessible only by boat!

Hop on a famous colourful long tail boat to reach some of Thailand’s most secluded paradise islands and beaches on an island tour.

The most famous tour is called the Four Island Tour which takes you along the Krabi coastline to Railay Beach, Tub Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island. Some tours also stop at Phra Nang Beach which has caves and cliffs.

You can book the island tour through many agencies, and they usually include pick up from your accommodation in Ao Nang or Krabi town.

The island tour is a full-day adventure, usually running from about 8am to 4pm. Tours range in price from 600-800 baht, depending on the quality of the vessel and buffet and the National Park fee usually isn’t included (400/200 baht per adult/child).

You never know the quality you’re going to get from these agencies though. If you want a guaranteed good experience, book online through the Klook website .

BONUS –  Booking ahead of time ensures you won’t miss out on the tour, and get the best price too! And just for NOMADasaurus readers, if you use the Klook discount code  “NOMADS10”  on the website when checking out, you’ll get $10 off your first booking!

Koh Phi Phi probably rings a bell! It was made famous by Leonardo’s stunning performance in the movie ‘The Beach’, so it’s one of Thailand’s most famous spots.

It’s actually a small archipelago of six islands though, not just one! And no list of the top Krabi attractions would be complete without mentioning it.

Koh Phi Phi Leh is the second largest island and is home to just one beach – Maya Bay. This is the famed stretch of white sand that Leo hung out at!

Unfortunately, the beach closed indefinitely to tourists following environmental damages.

It’s the main reason people used to visit the island – but it’s also home to the Viking Cave.

The cave has some cool ancient paintings of Scandanavian drakkars , although no one knows exactly how ancient they are.

The caves are now used to demonstrate how to collect swift’s nests. It’s all very eclectic. If you fancy checking it out, it’s up in the northeast of the island.

You can get there in half an hour on long-tail boat from Tonsai Bay which is the main pier for the islands.

If you want to make friends, get yourself to Koh Phi Phi Don. It’s the only island in the little archipelago that people live on.

It’s pretty mainstream now with many bars and clubs – let’s just say there’s plenty to do and many people to make friends with here!

Tonsai Village is the liveliest part which you can head to for a party! There’s enough going on here to keep the biggest of party animals amused.

Long Beach is nearby, but a little more tranquil. If you want super laid back, then Phi Phi East coast is where you should head.

You can get to Koh Phi Phi by ferry or speedboat. The ferry takes about two hours from Phuket (Rassada Pier) and an hour and a half from Krabi (Klong Jirad Pier) or Koh Lanta.

Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

For a more laid back island getaway, head to Koh Lanta. It seems to attract a lot of backpackers, peace seekers, and solo travellers – and for good reason!

It’s a lot bigger than Koh Phi Phi, so it has many more beaches and inland areas to explore. It’s got waterfalls and a national park and something like 30km of sunbathing-worthy sand to hit up.

It’s pretty hippy – comparable to Indonesia’s Gili Air vs. Gili Trawangan kind of thing.

Koh Lanta has managed to avoid too much overdevelopment similar to the likes of Koh Samui, which makes it one of our top recommendations for places to visit in Krabi.

There are at least fewer of the skyrise mega-hotels and ugly condos, rather it’s peppered with traditional bungalows.

Koh Lanta is actually one of our favourite places in Thailand to rent a bungalow and kick back for a week at a time! Don’t miss it!

But it’s still got plenty of places to wine and dine yourself. Fear not – Koh Lanta has lots of fun bars, restaurants, and spots to get souvenirs.

Hippie bars and picturesque sunsets are not in short stock here. Charm and convenience – Koh Lanta’s got the lot.

The island is 27km long, so it’s a good spot to rent a moped so you can whiz around and explore all the secluded beaches with some independence.

Long Beach is the longest beach on the island (it really does what it says on the tin)!

It’s beautiful and next to all the action, where some of the coolest restaurants are.

Head south, and you’ll hit Beautiful Beach and Relax Bay. Two awesome spots to do some serious chilling!

Check out Sala Dan and Lanta Old Town for some local culture. There are many teakwood shophouses towering over the water on stilts which have many lovely little cafes and shops.

You could spend weeks here without realising it’s been more than a few days!

Koh Lanta Beaches

Krabi is peppered with white sand beaches of the softest purest sand you’ll find in Asia – and even the world!

If you want a base for beach-related adventures, Ao Nang is a place to start .

Ao Nang is one of the most popular places to go when you visit Krabi. It’s busy and touristy but it’s a start and it turns out lots of people love that vibe anyway! Ao Nang Beach itself is a popular spot in Krabi as well.

There are a ton of bars and restaurants and you can sign up for many tours and dive trips from Ao Nang.

Minutes away you can find Nopparat Thara beach and Railay Beach. You can only reach Krabi’s gorgeous renowned Railay Beach by boat from Ao Nang Beach. Boats go every hour and only take 15 minutes.

Railay Beach has lovely serene neighbourhoods and glorious warm water. The jungle lined beaches attract all sorts of monkeys and rock climbers!

Phra Nang Beach is super remote with more famous limestone cliffs and caves. You can only reach Phra Nang Beach by long tail boat from Ao Nang.

Snorkel to discover some of Thailand’s epic marine life or go scuba diving from one of the dive centres here. If you’re into water sports, rent a kayak for some picturesque activities!

Koh Hong is another secluded beach reachable by boat from Ao Nang. The beautiful Koh Hong is part of Than Bok Khorani national park and is surrounded by forest.

If you’re up for something more resort-y, head to Klong Muang.

No matter what beach vibe you’re in the market for – there are a few to explore in the vicinity.

Krabi Snorkelling

Whatever islands and beaches you go to, be sure to take a dip in the glorious Andaman Sea. Rent a snorkel and fins or try scuba diving in Thailand – it’s famous for being one of the top things to do in Krabi for a reason!

The water is warm and it’s as blue as can be. You could see some inspiring marine life too!

If you want to try your hand at scuba diving – you’re in for a treat. Ao Nang Islands is one of the best places to give it a go. It’s one of Krabi’s most famous dive areas with awesome things to see.

It’s great for beginners as well as advanced divers. In Koh Yawabon there’s even an awesome cave system that experienced divers can explore.

You can go with a bunch of different dive shops. The price for two dives is usually between 2700-3200 baht.

Ao Nang Islands isn’t the only place you should go and blow bubbles at though! Krabi is home to many awesome dive sites.

From Koh Lanta, you can get to Koh Haa Yai which has an epic underwater cave system.

There’s one called The Cathedral which is 20 meters deep and a thrill to swim through. This isn’t for the faint-hearted though – beginners beware.

In the My Koh Lanta Marine Park, you can go to Hin Daeng (AKA Red Rock) which is your best bet of getting to fly around with majestic manta rays! There’s nothing more epic than seeing a manta for the first time. They’re unbelievably huge and so graceful – it’s a humbling experience.

If you want to swim with the friendliest sharks in the ocean, get in the water in Krabi. It’s home to Leopard, Bamboo, and Blacktip reef sharks.

From Koh Phi Phi you can hop on a dive trip to Shark Point which is a must visit! There’s also The King Cruise site which has a shallow wreck which means even beginners can go.

For the more adventurous out there, hop on a liveaboard dive trip to the Similan Islands !

There are four-day tours starting from Khao Lak – followed by epic diving in the most remote sites in Thailand. Cruises can be a little pricier, from nearer 11,000 baht, and they run from November to May.

Around Krabi, you could see schooling barracuda and big grouper fish. And of course, the usual colourful fish that frequent reefs, and maybe even lobster!

If you’re big into scuba diving and a bit of a macro geek – you can also find nudibranchs, seahorses, shrimp and even ghost pipefish around these waters. Get in there!

For more great diving opportunities in Thailand be sure to check out diving in Koh Tao !

The natural beauty of Krabi is truly one of its most attractive features. The jagged soaring limestone islands stand dramatically out of the picture-perfect blue ocean. All lined with glorious white sand beaches.

There are sheer limestone cliffs and dramatic waterfalls. Krabi has a slice of nature for everyone to get their teeth into!

Climbers from all over the world are attracted to the quintessential geological features of Krabi’s limestone peaks. The area has some of the world’s top rock climbing.

The karsts are challenging and many people agree it’s worth the trip to test yourself on Krabi’s rock climbing spots!

Millennia of chemical erosion led to these idyllic islands – hop on a cruise to Koh Poda to see some secret spots.

Railay Beach is one of the best spots to go rock climbing in the world. From the beaches there are rock climbing routes for all experience levels.

Routes in other locations can be accessed via a walk through the jungle or by abseiling over the sea. Not a bad way to start a day of rock climbing.

You can find instructors, equipment rental and guides all over the area as rock climbing is very popular – there are plenty of adventure agencies where you can sign up .

Rock Climbing Walls Krabi

You can mountain bike to Huay Toh Waterfall and explore Thailand by horseback.

Hire a fishing boat to cruise around Krabi’s islands, explore the jungle, or take a tour of the mangrove swamps.

There are hundreds of reasons to get outdoors in Krabi.

Grab a mountain bike from Krabi Mountain Biking on Chaofa road down by the river.

You can cruise around to Huay Toh Waterfall, the Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool and Hot Springs as well as a bunch of other temples and caves.

On Koh Lanta you can ride horses from Khlong Nin Beach and explore the gorgeous landscapes of Krabi Thailand from a different vantage point to normal.

There are horses available for beginners as well as advanced riders and those who want to get their thrills from a faster ride!

If you fancy a spot of fishing, you’re in the right place. Deep-sea fishing in Krabi is renowned for a reason.

There’s Tuna, Mackerel, Giant Trevally, and Barracuda, to name a few! These trips are usually reserved for the hardcore and will require stamina and skill – some of the fish are pretty big old things.

Thailand is famous for its gorgeous jungles – and it’s definitely worth getting deep inside them and having a look around.

One awesome viewpoint is Khao Ngon Nak Viewpoint. You can hike up here on a pretty exciting trail. And the best thing about it, it’s free!

There’s a 4km trail up to a viewpoint worth climbing for. It’s absolutely epic and something to behold for the photographers out there! On the way, you pass picturesque scenes too so keep your eyes peeled, always.

Krabi Park Waterfall

Explore all terrains on ATVs, or quad bikes. You can pick up a rental which is about 2000 baht per hour in Ao Nang, and charge around to explore the best things to do in Krabi!

A lot of the roads you can cruise around are standard roads but you can go through plantations too.

If you want to go off the beaten track, you can take a tour through Nai Sa with a guide . This gets you a bit more off-road and gives you a more authentic experience of the Thai countryside which is pretty epic.

Before you go, always check the condition of the quaddies, as it’s not uncommon for them to be in poor condition if they’ve been driven to the ground by inexperienced drivers who wear down the gears and brakes.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. And helmets are for the win – just in case!

Kayaking in Krabi, especially along the serene Klong Root Water Canal, offers an enchanting experience where the natural beauty of Thailand truly comes alive.

Paddling through this tranquil waterway, kayakers are enveloped by lush, verdant jungle and towering limestone cliffs that epitomise Krabi’s unique landscape.

This journey through Klong Root is not just a physical activity, but a peaceful escape from the busyness of downtown Krabi, allowing one to connect deeply with the natural world.

Here, away from the bustle of tourist spots, you can witness the untouched beauty of Thailand, occasionally spotting wildlife like exotic birds or playful monkeys in their natural habitat.

It’s an immersive experience that blends adventure with tranquility, making it a must-do for any visitor to Krabi.

Krabi’s capital, inventively named Krabi Town, is quite beautiful in itself.

Krabi Town is a major hub for many travellers as it acts as a throughflow point to other islands and mainland beaches. But it’s worth a mosey around!

Krabi Town is a mish-mash of fresh and funky bars and restaurants. The retro markets have some of the best local curries you can find.

There are even some cultural attractions that shouldn’t be missed .

Best of all, it’s surrounded by seductive mangrove forests, swamps, and rivers. Plus impressive limestone cliffs and of course, the dreamy turquoise sea.

Krabi Town is much less tacky compared with nearby Ao Nang. Although its traveller/backpacker area has expanded so it has many cafes, hostels, and fancy hotels.

Gentrification has certainly occurred here but Krabi town has kept its lovely locals and lively town aura.

Get a Thai massage, browse the shops, try a cooking class, or just wander around and get lost.

Hit it up in April during Thai New Year for a cultural adventure you won’t forget! Songkran is a three-day festival that is unlike any other new year celebration in the world.

Gorgeous Krabi Views

Krabi Town has a fab lively night market from 5-10pm Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Head to Thanon Khon Dern AKA the Walking Street to check out over 50 stalls selling everything from street food to clothes, and just about any products you can imagine.

Wander around and appreciate the beauty of locally made pearl jewellery and other souvenirs.

It would be rude not to sample some of the local cuisines from street vendors while you’re at the market in Krabi Town.

You can get anything from grilled satay to barbecue fish and fried squid eggs.

There are many cakes and sweets AKA kanom in Thai which are definitely worth sampling through the night. The sticky rice and mango is to die for!

The prices here are cheaper than most markets in Krabi town. It’s still worth bargaining though, and a smile goes a long way when it comes to that!

Considering it’s such a small market, it brings in a pretty big, lively crowd which is a testament to its awesomeness. It’s a great way to get an insight into life in southern Thailand.

To get the most out of your night market visit, consider booking a guided tour .

You might think it’s a bit overkill, but having a local with you will allow you to get a way deeper understanding of how the markets work, and you can try some real local food that isn’t just pad thai and satay chicken.

If you fancy some tropical temples then check out the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi Town.

It’s a few minutes drive from the town centre – be prepared to climb though!

At the top of 1,247 steps, you’ll find an epic view and a golden Buddha nestled in a beautiful forest. It’ll take what breath you have left away.

It’s named Wat Tham Suea in Thai after the tiger paw prints which were once found in the temple.

The legend is that a tiger used to enter the cave while Abbot Luang Por Chamnean Srilasatheto was meditating, but the tiger did not harm him.

Don’t worry – it doesn’t seem like there are many tigers around there these days! The Tiger Cave Temple is now a famous meditation centre. Nuns and monks retreat here from all over Thailand.

You can get there via an arranged tour via an agent , or grab yourself a taxi or rent a moped and go on your own accord.

As seems to be the case in Thailand, there’s plenty of nightlife on offer in the Krabi Province! If you really want to party, there are DJs busting decks all night in Ao Nang Beach!

For the early evening, the Last Cafe has some delightful sandwiches and chilled beers.

Amy’s Bar has got the tunes, bevvies, and snacks to keep you going all night.

There’s also Ao Nang Centre Point – a huge three-story complex that has late-night dining, night markets and venues to keep you entertained late into the night.

Klong Thom Hot Springs are an hour from Krabi Town, and they’re some of the best hot springs in the area. Find some serenity under the canopy of the rainforest and soak until you shrivel.

It’s situated near the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park – and is home to Mother Nature’s self-made hot tubs, known to Thai locals as nam tok drawn.

The appealing hot water comes from thermal springs, heated by volcanic chambers deep underground. Thank you, world!

The Klong Thom hot springs are sort of bathtubs, naturally hollowed out in lovely smooth stone, and full to the brim with spring water at 35-42 degrees celsius. It’s almost perfect!

There’s even a cool river running not too far away, in case you fancy a refreshing cool down after the hot springs.

If you fancy something a bit less rustic, they’ve created some man-made pools because the site was becoming so popular. There are even changing facilities. Ideal!

To avoid crowds, hit it up before 10am or after 4pm. There’s Krabi Hot Springs and Saline Hot Spring which is smaller and more local. It’s only 90 baht to enter – so join in and bathe away.

The Famous Crab Sculptures In Krabi.

If you walk a kilometre from the Krabi Hot Springs you’ll get to the Insta-perfect Emerald Pool. The water is clear as crystal and totally worth heading there early for!

If you appreciate nature and like a little hike on some decent trails, you’ll be rewarded at the end with the stunning pool, which is a little hidden away in the jungle.

You can explore a whole network of trails through the Thung Teao Forest Natural Park to get to the pool. The longest trail is 1.2km with no climbing – so it’s fairly accessible to most.

On the journey, you’ll pass loads of streams, waterfalls, and mini pools. There are many gorgeous tropical trees and flora which will keep your eyes pleased for the whole walk, especially if you’re a nature lover.

Entrance to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve and Emerald Pool is 200 baht. For both the hot springs and the pools, you can go on a guided tour , or rent mopeds and cruise around by yourself for some independent exploration.

Krabi Travel Guide

Now that you know all the great things to do in Krabi, here’s our guide to help you get here.

How to Get to Krabi Thailand

It may seem like a tropical paradise in the middle of nowhere, but it’s very easy to visit Krabi!

Flying into Krabi is as easy as pie. Krabi International Airport is 15 kilometres from the town centre. International and domestic flights operate daily from major cities.

Four countries fly directly to Krabi: Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Qatar (Doha) and many cities in China.

Within Thailand, you can fly from Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and of course, Bangkok. You can book flights from all locations easily online!

Bussing around Krabi couldn’t be easier. Hop on the bus from Bangkok at Borommaratchachonnani Road – it’ll cost you about 620-970 baht for the ten or so hour journey.

Other main places you can bus from in Thailand are Trang (129 baht), Phuket (155 baht) Hat Yai (234 baht).

You don’t usually need to book ahead unless it’s a Thai public holiday. You can choose to get air-conditioned, deluxe and luxury coaches depending on your budget.

There are also tourist buses which can pick you up from your hostel/hotel. It’s best to contact a local agency to arrange these.

You can visit Krabi all year round, but it’s best to head over when humidity is at its lowest to avoid sweating through too many of your t-shirts!

There are three seasons when it comes down to it.

Peak season is from October to March when it’s ‘hot’.

It’s hotter in the rainy low season from June to October .

The hottest time of year during their summer season is March to June .

During the low season, Krabi is perfect for backpackers! Accommodation can drop to a very affordable $5/night.

Although the price to pay is the chance of monsoon rains hitting hard for up to a week, and certainly no guarantee of sunbathing weather!

Humidity is high and temperatures usually hang around 25-30 degrees celsius. Many ferry routes are substantially less frequent but it’s cheap as chips.

In the high season, prices jump and accommodation gets booked up. Perfect temperatures, blue skies, and ideal water conditions attract tourists from every corner of the world.

So it’s best to plan as much as you can if you want to visit from October to March.

Thailand’s destinations such as Phuket , Hua Hin and Pattaya , with their renowned d turquoise beaches, will always attract a large number of visitors. Traditional Longtail Boat from Krabi

About 800km from the capital Bangkok, Krabi is located on the shores of the Andaman Sea in the west coast of Southern Thailand Peninsula. The towering limestone karsts and azure water meet the smooth white sandy banks, reflecting the sparkling sunshine of this tropical paradise.

Unlike the bustling centres of Pattaya, Phuket or Koh Samui, Krabi is a charming beach town offering a serene atmosphere. Local people welcome us with their hospitality in a very tranquil setting, reminding us of some beach towns of Vietnam.

koh lao daing

After checking into our hotel and dropping off our luggage, we begin to wander around the town. The aroma of spiced grilled meat fills the air. Most of the local population of Krabi is Muslim, and this has heavily influenced the local cuisine. In particular, if you have a chance to taste the Kebabs in Krabi – grilled meat wrapped in Turkish “Naan” bread, you will be delighted by the extraordinary and delicious taste. The cuisine of Krabi is a striking blend of Thai, Indian and Chinese influences. Amazingly, eating in Krabi is often cheaper than at other Thai tourist destinations.

krabi night market thailand

Fortunately, we have the opportunity to visit the Krabi night market. Krabi’s night market is typically held in the three last days of the week. Local people display a variety of goods, from jewelry and fashion, to household appliances and food, all at a very cheap price. The night market here also reminds us of the night market in the Old Quarter of Hanoi or Ben Thanh night market in Ho Chi Minh City.

Krabi island blog: Strolling around three beaches

On our first day, we visit Railay, Ao Nang and Noparathara beaches. To come to those beaches, we must travel to Ao Nang wharf to take boats for every leg of our journey. It takes about 10 minutes from Ao Nam to Railay by boat. On the island, many tourists choose to go climbing, kayaking or swimming. To experience the best views and bluest water, we must come to the other side of the island, which is home to numerous beaches and tourists. However, by coming here a little earlier in the day, you will be rewarded with a beach less crowded by tourists and boats arriving from Ao Nang.

krabi island travel guide itinerary 3 days

Unlike Ao Nang, which is home to the the majority of hotels, resorts and restaurants of Krabi, Railay remains largely untouched, with an expansive beach for those who would like to enjoy the tranquility. The service charge at Railay is also more reasonable than in Ao Nang.

Railay Beach thailand guide

When strolling along the beach, we come across an unexpected sight – Penis Cave, where an array of penis-shaped statues of varied sizes and colors, has been placed directly onto the sandy banks of a rocky alcove on the beach. Local people bring flowers and candles here to pray for fertility.

krabi travel vlog

If Railay is an ideal destination for international guests, Noparathara is the popular choice for locals. Many Thai can be found taking in the sun and fresh air on this windy beach. Cooking areas are often set-up right on the sand. As in Ao Nang, the tide can greatly affect the water depth; therefore, the best time to visit these two beaches is on the morning and late afternoon.

Krabi island travel blog: Trekking through primary forests

Taking a brief interlude from the spectacular beaches of Krabi, we visit Khao Pra Bang Khram Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the famous Emerald Pool – Sa Morrakot (or also called Emerald Pond). Located 55km from Krabi, motorbike remains our best option.

Walking in this forest reminds me of the Vietnam’s own Cat Ba, Cuc Phuong or Ba Vi National Parks. However, coming upon some stunning wide and shallow streams in the forest, we realize it is unique here. The water is clean and turquoise as in theVietnamese limestone karst areas, such as Ba Be in Bac Kan or Bac Po in Cao Bang. The water’s color changes depending on the composition of algae, bacteria and water temperature. The color will turn into sapphire at high temperature and blue at low temperature.

These streams act to cool the air as we wander under the canopy of this primary forest. We walk for over 1km, along meter-wide wooden walkways under the cover of the looming trees. Sometimes, we pass by concrete bridges with handrails and pause to listen to the sound of singing birds and wild animals. The atmosphere of the ancient forest helps us to forget any tiredness we have after traveling a long way from Krabi to this place.

Finally, we arrive at Emerald Pool – Sra Morrakot, which is regarded as a miniature epitomization of the fabled Jiuzhaigou reserve of China. This natural pond covers an area of 25m2 with anaverage depth of 12m. Visitors can go swimming in the pond for a fee of 200 Baht. The water here consists of a high amount of Calcium Carbonate; therefore, drinking is not allowed, as well as the use of any detergent or soap in the pond.

Krabi island blog: Four Island Tour

The following day brings a different experience of the beaches of Thailand. We choose to tour around four famous islands – Koh Poda – Koh Tup – Koh Kai (Chicken Island) and Phra Nang Beach (Railay Bay). This is an extremely popular tour for visitors to Krabi. We decide to take one of these tours as they have been recommended to us, and the price is reasonable. The price includes transport, lunch, fruit and drinks as well as scuba gear to view the coral reefs and marine creatures.

krabi travel vlog

We are very excited to tour the four islands. Although we spend only an hour in Koh Poda after departing from Ao Nang’s wharf, we feel we have arrived in paradise. Because we arrive at Koh Poda in the early morning, the majority of tours are yet to arrive. We are allured by the long, white sandy beach, the shifting kaleidoscope of blues in the water and the unbroken vast sky. We take advantage of our time here virtually alone to slide into the the water of Koh Poda, marked by the solitary karst just off shore. Colorful fish swim leisurely near the shore. We feed them some bread and look at them eagerly as they come as close to us as a flock of pigeons in the park.

krabi travel vlog

The boat then takes us to Koh Tup, where we can also swim in the turquoise sea and see schools of tropical fish. This little island is also known as Talae Waek to many visitors. Although it is small, Koh Tup is magnificent. It is surrounded by other three small islands, which are within swimming and kayaking distance. On low tide, stretches of sand connect the islands and visitors can walk between them easily.

krabi travel vlog

After a remarkable BBQ lunch on the beach, we continue on to visit Chicken Island, a small, limestone island with similar geology to Halong Bay of Vietnam. The island is named Chicken Island due to its shape. We spend 45 minutes diving to view the coral reefs and fish with the provided scuba gear. Unfortunately years of tourism and fishing have left their mark, as the coral is dead and the fish are very small. Fortunately the island itself holds a great deal of beauty.

krabi travel vlog

The final island, Phra Nang Beach attracts us with its deep blue water and white sandy banks. The sun and wind have embellished for the sea here. We spend much time on the island, walking, sunbathing and sightseeing. On the island of Krabi, although there are many outdoor activities such as swimming, diving, sunbathing, kayaking and rock climbing, there are not any big umbrellas or reclining chairs on the beach. However, for me, this is really a wonderful experience.

Krabi island blog: Be moved with peaceful Koh Lanta

phi phi island tour koh lanta

From Krabi, you can take a bus to Koh Lanta for 300 Baht/ticket. The journey takes 3 hours. Alternatively boats depart at 11:30a.m and take two hours.

The boat takes us to Saladan Koh Lanta wharf on the island. We choose a guesthouse with a tranquil feeling for about $6.5. It includes a shared bathroom per 4 rooms, free wifi, coffee and use of a bicycle. Motorbikes are available for 150Baht/day to discover this serene island.

Koh Lanta island thailand

Local people on the island earn their living through fishing and tourism. One of the smaller islands, it takes us one day to tour around Koh Lanta Yai island with its beaches and bays, from Sala Dan wharf to Klong Dao Beach, Phra Ae (Long Beach), Klong Khong Beach, Klong Nin Beach, Kan Tiang Bay, Nui Bay, Klong Jack Bay, Mai Pai Bay and Lanta Old Town. Amongst the many beaches and small bays of the island, we are most impressed by pristine beaches at the end of the island such as Kan Tiang Bay, Nui Bay, Klong Nin Beach and Mai Pai Bay. These beaches are very peaceful, with blue water and clean, smooth, white sandy banks framed by the mountains of Koh Lanta National Park.

plantation-panorama-villa-koh-samui-16

The final destination on the island is Lanta Old Town – a string of stilted-houses straddling the river. Most of the local people here earn their living by providing tourism services. the population is mainly Muslim however some Western residents run restaurants or offer diving services on the island. The price in Koh Lanta is more expensive than in Krabi, but a variety of restaurants, hotels and resorts ensure something to suit all budgets. Tours on offer here include fishing, snorkeling or visiting Koh Rok.

krabi travel vlog

Many accommodations provide complimentary bicycles with which to explore the island. We ride to Long Beach (Phra Ae Beach), one of the longest beaches of Koh Lanta. This is a beautiful beach with clear water and smooth rolling waves. The beach expands romantically and is lined by casuarinas. This is an ideal location for families with small children.

Krabi island travel blog: Experiencing Koh Phi Phi

koh phi phi island thailand

We wake up early to continue our journey. It’s past 7 a.m, but the city is still very quiet. From Koh Lanta wharf to Koh Phiphi, we take a boat departing at 8:00a.m for 250 Baht/person. After an hour, we arrive at Koh Phiphi.

Hundreds of tourists sharing a boat have been branded with different stamps on their shirts. Those with yellow or red stamps will travel to Phuket, while visitors with green stamps will take the “One day tour”. Before entering Koh Phiphi Don, the boat moors at Ton Sai, where passengers to Phuket transfer to another big boat. After that, we continue to go to Koh Phiphi and pay a 20 Baht hygiene fee. We are quite overwhelmed by the long queues of visitors flocking to the island. The island is home to a variety of noisy restaurants and all-night bars with a large number of younger clients drinking the night away.

krabi travel vlog

Although Koh Phi Phi is small, the price here is rather expensive. The restaurants, hotels and guesthouses at Koh Phi Phi are considered to be amongst the most expensive in Thailand. Tours are also expensive. Many tours to Maya Bay are priced over 1.000 Baht – 2.500 Baht/person (about nearly $31.69 – $79.22).

krabi travel vlog

From Koh Phiphi, we visit Long Beach with its smooth, sandy banks and clean, clear water. Long Beach has many resorts at various prices. It takes us about 35 minutes to walk from Ton Sai to Long Beach. With this walk, we have a chance to view the pristine, peaceful beach with fewer tourists, restaurants and resorts. However, you can also travel to Long Beach by taxi boat at 100 Baht/one way.

Koh Phi Phi island thailand boats

The following day, we gather to take a tour to Maya Beach with a group of international guests at 10:00a.m. The tour departs at 10:30am. 25 passengers, including us, are taken on board a long tail boat. Here, we have a bottle of orange juice and a sandwich for breakfast. Firstly, we go snorkeling for 15 minutes, to view the aquatic life that Long Breach has to offer.

koh phi phi island thailand 2

The boat continues to take us to Monkey Beach, a small beach with fine white sand banks touching the blue sea. The main attractions of the island are the naughty and voracious monkeys, who are professional at taunting the tourists. Finally, we reach Bamboo Island and its small, white sandy beaches. Each guest has to pay 100 Baht/person to get on the island. We spend one hour on the island for lunch after swimming, viewing coral reefs and playing with colorful tropical fish.

Sofitel Phokeethra Golf spa Resort thailand

Leaving Bamboo Island, we go snorkeling at Nui Bay and tour around famous Phiphi Leh and its ravishing paradisical beauty.

Finally, we visit Maya Bay Beach at 5:00p.m. It’s crescent shaped bank is ringed in by limestone mountains , giving of the image of a Mayan earring. The beach is still very crowded at this time. If you travel to the island earlier, you will have to pay 100 Baht to get on the island and walk with bare feet on the smooth beach.

Diving in Koh Phi Phi

Although Maya Bay is exotic with clean, blue sea, this island is too commercialized to make it attractive for tough guests like us. Maybe, beaches such as Koh Tao or Koh Nang Yuan with their peaceful ambiance make us feel that Maya Bay is nothing exceptional. However, it achieved fame and attracts many visitors because of the movie, The Beach, starring the Hollywood star, Leonardo Dicaprio in 1999.
