The pursuit of pleasure is a very serious business, well for me anyway! For that reason I would like to request that you prioritize our time together and schedule accordingly. I do understand that occasionally a date may need to be cancelled. If so please notify me at least 24hrs in advance. Unfortunately cancellations on the same day as our date will result in either a loss of 50% of your deposit or the need for a 50% deposit to be paid in advance should you wish to re-schedule for another time. Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Safe Options and Some to Avoid

Finding a travel companion can make travel better but it can also make it worse.

There was a lively debate about finding a travel partner on the Solo Travel Society on Facebook.

• The majority of people considered this service counter to solo travel. Karen wrote: “I don't want to connect with anyone, love being solo. “
• Some thought that there was definitely a place for it. Danielle wrote: “when it comes to hiking or camping remotely while solo, that's a little nerve wracking and I'd love to meet up with people who are in the same mindset. “
• Some liked the idea as a means of getting around the single supplement. Mary wrote: “I like the idea of being connected to someone sometimes to avoid that “single-occupancy tax. “

Let's be clear: despite being a solo traveler, I have traveled with companions many times and had good success. It can enhance the travel experience as you discover a new destination through your own cultural lens and that of your new travel companion as well.

Yet, whatever your reason for seeking a travel companion, I suggest you proceed with caution and use the methods below. They are safe and will help increase your chances of making a successful match.

How to Find a Travel Companion: Methods I Can Recommend

There are safe ways to find a travel partner for a day, a week, or more. These methods give you the freedom of being solo and connecting to interesting people when you want.

1. Get a warm introduction from a friend.

One of the best ways to find a travel companion is through a friend or family member. Being concerned for your safety, they will only suggest that you travel with people they trust. Hopefully, you will be geographically close enough to meet each other a few times before setting out so that you can determine for yourself whether they are a person with whom you'd like to spend a lot of time.

2. How to meet the right travel companion along the way.

This has happened to me most often in hostels, but it doesn't really matter where you meet them. The point is that you meet a travel buddy as you travel, not before. You get to meet them in person and spend a few days together sharing meals or day tours before committing to anything longer. Spend the days in the public sphere and return to your own safe accommodation every night. Eventually, you can decide whether this is the right person for you to travel with.

3. Let your tour/cruise company connect you with a travel partner.

If your goal is to avoid the single supplement on a tour or cruise, ask the travel company to partner you with another solo traveler. Most companies will and, if they can't, they'll give you your own room for no additional charge. See our Deals  page for tours and cruises with no or low single supplements.

4. Use Meetup.com to find locals who want similar experiences

Meetup.com is a fabulous resource for solo travelers to meet people of similar interests. These are most often locals, not people to travel with. But, locals! How great is that? I used Meetup.com and found people to hike with in Hong Kong.

5. Book a greeter and have a local share their city with you. 

International Greeters  connects you with locals who volunteer to show off their city. I've used this service in Paris, New York, Kyoto, and Chicago. It's a great way to meet and have fun with someone new. I've gone cycling, shared lunch, and shopped with greeters.

6. Women Welcome Women World Wide

This is an international community of 2,400 people in over 80 countries. They are mostly women over 60 who want to travel more often and meet locals, so they host one another for a tea or a stay as they travel. Read  Women Welcoming Women: A Gateway to International Friendships .

7. Take a day tour or a class to find a travel companion.

3 Safety Rules for Traveling with Someone New

Traveling with someone you do not know really well requires a few safety tips, especially if you're traveling independently:

• Stay in public. When you are with someone new, stay in the public sphere for at least a few days. You need a bit of time to get to know them before renting a car together or sharing a hotel room. Eventually, determine whether this is a person with whom you truly feel safe.
• Be proactive . Choose who you want to spend time with. Make your own decisions rather than responding to invitations from others who might have agendas of their own.
• Don't be rushed into a decision. If you are considering traveling with someone, don't be rushed into the decision. If the idea comes up but they say that you must decide by a time that is less than comfortable for you, decline the opportunity.

Apps/Sites for Travel Companions: My Concerns

There are a number of apps and websites that will help you find a travel partner. I have concerns about them for the following reasons.

• Compatibility . Just because you're going to the same destination does not mean that you're compatible with someone. You may not discover until you're into the trip that you don't share the same interests or ways of exploring, never mind the rhythm of your travels. This can make for a miserable trip.
• Catfishing . A catfish is someone online who pretends to be someone they're not. Without a real life connection, there is no way to know who is real and who isn't on social media. This could put you in a vulnerable situation where the person you thought was going to be your travel buddy is actually expecting to hook up, is not who they pretended to be, or worse.
• Misunderstandings . The potential for a serious misunderstanding is another reason I don't promote the idea of finding a travel partner on an app. Your new travel partner may not have had any intention of deceiving you and may not mean to cause you any harm, yet they may have different hopes for the trip than you do.
• Telling the world you're solo . By participating on an independent matching site and sharing your itinerary you are telling the world that you are traveling solo and where. While I don't hide the fact that I'm solo while I travel, for safety reasons, I don't broadcast it either.
• Sites/apps can get too much personal information . In an effort to increase member safety, some sites go through a variety of verification steps, including gathering government ID information. This raises identity safety concerns.

Because I can't promote the sites that help you find a travel partner (I don't have experience with them), I'm not giving you a list. However, if you are still interested, you will find a list on Google. If you do so, I hope you'll be cautious with a new travel partner and read the Solo Travel Safety section of the site before leaving.

We now present a great guide for meeting women in Vegas and having a great “boys night out trip!” You will find advice on getting a good room, clubbing, comps, the pool scene, getting around the strip, entertainment, dining, and more.

Get a Good Room

Las Vegas is no longer a cheap place to stay and eat. The only exception is if you gamble and get “comps” (see next tip regarding comps). $20 rooms are no longer the norm except for certain times during Christmas and Summer. $100-$200 per night is often closer to the average for a reasonable hotel. Don’t be too cheap … a bunch of people staying in one room to save money is no fun and will ruin your trip. You will be spending a lot of time in your room, even if you don’t think so before you go to Vegas. You can only be gambling and going out so many hours per day and will need a room you like to crash and recharge for the night and afternoon. Staying in a cheapo room with cracking walls, a bad shower, low water pressure, noise, dirt, etc., is just going to start things off in the wrong direction. It can make it difficult to get a good nights rest so you look and feel your best. After all, you want to appear confident and smooth when meeting the ladies. A decent room will help you achieve this and a bad room can just have the opposite effect on your all-important self-image. As a minimum look for a 3 star (4 star or higher is suggested) hotel in a good location near Center Strip or CityCenter.

It is not easy to get comped these days. You will need to stay and gamble at the same hotel for almost your entire stay and gamble hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The hotels just don’t give things away unless you play a lot and also let them know you are gambling. You may get show tickets with a few hundred in bets, but a free room requires thousand’s of dollars per day in gambling. You will be money ahead by just spending your money on a good room, nice meal, or entertainment, and skipping the gambling to get comps. Of course, gambling for fun is another story. Meeting Women

In general, the more average hotels with cheaper drinks will attract more approachable women. For example,  Harrah’s Carnival Court is a good place to meet women. Very high-end hotels are often filled with escorts or “gold diggers.”  If you see a woman drinking non-alcoholic beverages like hot coffee/tea at night, they are often but of course not always, escorts. They won’t be drinking alcohol if they are “working,” so don’t bother trying to hit on them. If you are looking for that, see our Sin City Guide for more about that part of Vegas.

Most girls in Vegas are actively looking to do stuff and meet guys. As a result, it is often easier to meet women in Vegas than in your hometown. However, the same rules apply and the competition is just as bad or worse, with more aggressive guys and an international playing field of affluent people. Just play it cool and have reasonable expectations. You are still you in Vegas. The most important things is to have fun and show confidence, which is what will really attract women.

You can also try going to Downtown Vegas during the day as well. The area can get a bit sketchy at night. Look for girls with those big drinks. They will be very drunk after finishing one!

The Club Scene

Low-end clubs are going to give you much better odds of finding girls. It is more fun and not such a scene. Further, it will be tough to get into high-end clubs when they are busy. One exception is if you are staying as a guest in the hotel, since they sometimes have VIP tickets for guests. Otherwise, you will most likely need to recruit some women to get you into a club or will need to tip the doorman a lot. Try to meet women in the fringes of the clubs where it is more quiet. The main dance area is just for dancing and you can’t talk. Unless you just want to dance the night away, skip the dancing. Some of the best clubs in Vegas are at the Cosmopolitan hotel . Tip the bartender $10 to start for better service. You will need their attention to get drinks when they are busy.

Clubs close around 6 AM, but don’t bother looking for action that late. Even Vegas stops as the sun comes up. Drais at the Cromwell has a good late night club. You may want to hit the pool the next day to meet women, so sleeping too late will ruin your daytime action. 

The “cheap and cheesy” clubs and lounges are going to save you money and you will get in faster. The girls are also going to be much easier to approach and you will have more fun. The main benefit of the big name clubs is a nicer place with what are often better looking girls. See our Vegas club guide for more information.

Many of the pools in Vegas are closed during the winter, so you will need to keep that in mind. Also, with a few exceptions you can only stay in the pool of the hotel you are staying at, so make sure to pick a hotel with a good pool if that is important. Hotels with a good singles scene pool are Palms , Rio , Hard Rock , Mirage , Caesars , Flamingo , and MGM Grand . Mandalay Bay has the best pool, but it is more for families. Palms and Hardrock have the best pool clubs. Day club pool parties are a great place to meet the ladies. The vibe is very relaxed. As with most places, you will see more guys than girls and if you are not in good shape it could be intimidating.

Some pools offer European style topless pools. Examples include the Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay and the Venus Pool at Caesars  that has a secret hidden entrance. Another good one is the Sapphire Pool, which is run by the Sapphire strip club , so you will definitely be seeing attractive topless women. As the name implies, the Bare Pool Lounge at Mirage is also topless and one of the best on the Strip. For the most part, don’t go with a bunch of guys if you want to get into these pools. With the exception of Sapphire, most of the girls are not likely to be “topless worthy” and are there just to relax European style. It might also be mostly guys too. Just stick with the Gentlemen’s Clubs unless you are really into the topless pool scene. See our Vegas pool guide .

Location. Getting Around. Best Times to Visit

The  Flamingo , Bellagio and Caesars are center strip and in a “hot area” near many things you will want to do. If possible, try to book your hotel around them. CityCenter is another great area with Aria , Cosmopolitan and Vdara around it. The north part of the strip is quieter and features Venetian , Wynn and Encore .

Hotels in Vegas are often huge and can be around 1/2 mile apart, so unless you have a car or love walking, you will need cabs or the monorail if you are not central to things. You may think you are saving money staying a few miles off the strip, but the cab fare can really add up and make things more expensive than if you just picked a better location. Even with a car, traffic can be insane and waste hours out of your day. You can consider renting a limo and travel the town in style. When shared by enough people the cost is not that much more than if everyone took cabs.

Thanksgiving to Christmas is the cheapest time to stay in Las Vegas. It is also the deadest time, so there is a trade-off. July and August also have dirt-cheap rates, but you will be frying in 100°F weather if you plan on doing much walking outside, but it is fine for hitting the pools. The best weather weather is March, April, May and June. January can be cold with below freezing temps at night. January also has a lot of conventions, so you will be paying more even though the weather is bad. See our Vegas Weather Guide for more info.

The Vegas monorail runs in the back of the hotels, so you will still need to do a lot of walking just to get to the stops. In a lot of cases it is just faster to walk to a nearby hotel. However, it is very useful for getting around from distant locations, like North to South end of the Strip. A daily or weekly pass can save you money and is advisable.

Taxi cabs cannot be hailed. You can only get it at the front of a hotel by waiting in line. The people in the taxi lines don’t normally need tips. Also, the cab drivers get kick-backs from the clubs. Stick to where you want to go when in a cab and don’t get side-tracked. On a long trip, such as from the airport to your hotel, it is a good idea to ask for the estimated amount of a trip before you get in the taxi, which will keep the cab driver honest in what he charges. You can also make note of their drive ID number and let them know your paying attention to it.

NY NY to Stratosphere (South to North end of Strip) is a very long 5 mile walk. It is not easy to do and will make you very tired with worn out feet. This is almost an impossible walk during the hot summer months unless you are into marathons. Have a plan and don’t just walk around the Strip. A good map is also suggested. Always have lots of water with you when you walk during the hot months. This is even more true if you plan to drink a lot, since alcohol will dehydrate your body. Heat stroke is no fun. Wear a light jacket during the colder months.

Downtown vs. the Strip. Downtown has good aspects – Great for gambling. Low table minimums. Old school Vegas. It is fine to visit, but we don’t advise staying there even though the cheap rates can be tempting. There are also some safety concerns, especially at night.

Getting The Best Hotel Rates

The best rates are usually, but not always online. Never take the price of the first rate given when you call a hotel. You will get a better rate if you wait. Book online with a discount source . Be sure to check several online sources and go with the lowest rate. However, you really need to go with a trusted company that has been around for a while (shameless plug for this site, Las Vegas Direct is coming), since there are still lots of bad companies out there, and if you are not careful … you may never get your confirmation and you could be out the entire cost of the prepaid hotel stay! Another savings tip is to not book too far in advance, since the hotels don’t yet know if there is a low enough volume to warrant discounted rates. 1-2 months in advance is a sweet spot to find cheap days. Just search in blocks of 1 week at a time. Sun-Thurs will almost always give you the best rates. Great deals will come up in the search results  on certain dates that are not booked much, since the hotels don’t want empty rooms. Be sure to avoid busy Vegas conventions that can cause prices to skyrocket.

Strip Clubs

Gentlemen’s clubs in Vegas are very accepted and you won’t be seen as a “pervert.” Some are much better than others. Spearmint Rhino is one of the best. Get there before 9p if you want a seat on weekends. The strippers in Vegas fly in from all over the country. The “best of the best” often appear in these clubs. Dining and Entertainment

Do a guys dinner with steaks and drinks. Vegas has many great steakhouses – Smith and Wollensky, Charlie Palmer Steak, Delmonico, Craftsteak, Flemings, Palm, Prime at Bellagio, and SW Steakhouse at Wynn  are some good choices. Finally, no trip to Vegas is complete without seeing some shows . Go for one of the top big production shows , like those by Cirque du Soleil.

Bedbugs check in to some popular Las Vegas hotels. Guests may leave with new travel companions

What happens in Las Vegas doesn’t always stay in Las Vegas. That applies to bedbugs that may hitch a ride with you back to your home.

At least four guests staying in popular hotels on the Las Vegas Strip encountered the pests in their rooms between September and January, according to Las Vegas-based KLAS-TV , which cited reports from the local health department.

Health inspectors from the Southern Nevada Health District confirmed bedbug sightings at the Encore, Venetian, Excalibur Hotel & Casino and Mirage. A bedbug-sniffing dog deployed by the Encore found a live bedbug on Dec. 5 after a guest complained, according to the news station. The hotel closed that room for service.

The Southern Nevada Health District said it provided inspection reports to the station in response to a public records request over “bed complaints for public accommodations” over a six-month period .

“We understand that people find the topic of interest, and bed bugs are a nuisance; however, we are not conducting any ongoing investigations,” communications officer Jennifer Sizemore of the Southern Nevada Health District wrote in an email.

The Nevada Resort Assn., a gaming and resort advocacy group, said the health and safety of guests is the highest priority for the resort industry.

“With approximately 155,000 hotel rooms and 41 million annual visitors, four rooms impacted over a nearly five-month period that generated millions of room nights shows these are extremely rare and isolated occurrences,” the association said. “The minute number of incidents reflects the comprehensive and proactive health and safety measures and pest-control procedures Las Vegas resorts have in place to prevent and address issues.”

The association added that when hotels encounter bedbugs, guests are relocated and exterminators are called, in accordance with health and safety guidelines. But the association cautions that bedbugs can be transported just about anywhere in luggage or on clothing.

While bedbugs themselves don’t experience wanderlust, world travelers who flock to major tourist destinations — such as Las Vegas — may find themselves with bedbugs as their new travel companions.

The French government has been forced to step in to calm an increasingly anxious nation preparing to host the Olympic Games in just over nine months.

The report of a handful of bedbugs over a five-month period comes shortly after Las Vegas played host to roughly 450,000 visitors for Super Bowl LVIII earlier this month. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, a government agency tasked with marketing Sin City to the world, estimates that nearly half a million visitors walked the Vegas Strip during Super Bowl weekend. Steve Hill, president and chief executive of the visitors authority, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that there were 300 events leading up to the game across Las Vegas. It’s unknown how many of those visitors actually stayed in the city.

Attorney Brian Virag, who specializes in suing hotels and short-term rental companies on behalf of clients who have been bitten by bedbugs, said that the few reported incidents in Las Vegas is most likely a conservative and underreported figure.

“When someone’s exposed to bedbugs, they will deal directly with the hotel management,” Virag said. “In only a handful of situations do people exposed to bedbugs actually reach out to the health department.”

Disneyland Hotel is sued by a woman who said she was bitten by bedbugs. Her attorney has a history of winning big awards.

A woman who stayed at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim in April was bitten numerous times by bedbugs and suffered physical and emotional damage, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by an attorney who has won large verdicts for bedbug victims.

That means that many bedbug encounters go unreported to a government agency, he suggested.

Virag advises guests to always check their hotel rooms before they retire for the night. That includes checking the mattress, baseboards, behind the headboard, nightstands and curtains. The advice applies to the most budget-friendly hostels and the most lavish resort suites around the world.

“Bedbugs don’t discriminate,” Virag said. “They don’t check TripAdvisor before they infest a particular property.”

While not poisonous, bedbugs are persistent in overstaying their welcome. They can live for a year without eating and will emerge when a new food source arrives, such as a human or animal, according to the pest control company Orkin. Female bedbugs can deposit one to five eggs a day and may lay up to 200 to 500 eggs in their lifetime.

“While bedbugs are visible to the naked eye, they are excellent at hiding. Involving a trained professional at the sight of a bedbug introduction is recommended,” Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel said in a statement accompanying a recent report that ranks some of the worst bedbug offenders across the country.

Chicago topped the list, while Los Angeles ranked fifth and Las Vegas entered the list for the first time at No. 35.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit in 2024?

Right now, Moscow is not safe to visit due to the ongoing war with Ukraine. The political situation is tenuous, and there have been situations of the government targeting foreign citizens.

Although Moscow has a low crime rate, that doesn’t mean the city is safe as long as the political situation is the way that it is. Most foreign governments tell their citizens to avoid all parts of Russia right now, including Moscow.

For example, the United States tells its citizens not to travel to any parts of Russia, putting the country under a Level Four travel advisory .

This warning is echoed by other countries such as Australia and Canada. The main reason these countries cite for telling people not to go to Moscow is the war with Ukraine.

After years of a low-scale conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 . Most observers think the Russians planned to take over Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine quickly, but the war has been going on for over a year now with no signs of stopping.

Although most of the fighting is occurring in Ukraine, with just a few bombing forays in Russian border regions far away from Moscow, the war has impacted the situation in the Russian capital as well.

Foreign sanctions mean that there are shortages in the capital and foreign banks and cards don’t work. In response to the sluggish war effort, the Russian government has become more repressive.

Men were conscripted, often against their will. The government responded violently  to protesters against the war, and some people have been charged with treason for criticizing the war. Freedom of speech was already declining in Russia, and the war is just making that even worse.

It is a mistake to think that as a foreigner you would be free from the growing repression due to the war. If there is any possibility you might be seen as having Russian citizenship, you might be forcibly mobilized.

Since the war, the Russian government has detained several foreign citizens in a transparent ploy to use them as leverage with Western governments, such as the American basketball player Brittney Griner  and the American journalist Evan Gershkovich.  

Besides the threat of war and repression, Moscow has a moderate crime rate that has been increasing since the war.

Common crimes include:

• Pickpocketing
• Bag snatching
• Armed robbery

The city has also seen several terrorist attacks recently that took many lives.

Compared to other big cities and the rest of Russia, Moscow’s crime rate is actually not that bad. While crime does occur, it is frequently petty in nature and not often violent.

English-language crime statistics for Moscow are not always easy to find, but once you do locate them, they are promising. As of 2017 , the Moscow Oblast had an intentional homicide rate of 6.9 incidents per 100,000 people.

Although this is slightly higher than the national average, most of these homicides occurred in the other cities that make up the Oblast while the city of Moscow itself has a much lower homicide rate.

In 2021, Moscow had over 143,000 total crimes recorded. Although this is the highest number in Russia, that makes sense because Moscow is also the most populous city in Moscow.

Most of these crimes were incidents of theft or other property crimes, not violent crimes. Most people living in Moscow feel relatively safe. According to Numbeo, the level of crime in Moscow scores a 35.68 out of 100 on the crime index, which is low.

The only crimes for which people reported moderate levels were minor property crimes such as vandalism and theft (although most people are concerned about corruption and bribery).

The feeling of safety is backed up by expat blogs that say Moscow feels very safe although it is a massive city. However, the war in Ukraine looks as if it is changing the feeling of safety in Moscow as well.

News reports say that the rate of armed violence has increased all over Russia, including Moscow. Moscow saw a whopping 203% increase  in crimes involving weapons in 2022. Although the overall crime rate took a dip, the violent crime rate increased.

There are a few reasons why people think violent crime in Moscow has increased. The war in Ukraine means that there are more weapons floating around, making it easier for someone who wants an illegal weapon to obtain one.

There have also been violent attacks against government facilities such as military recruitment offices, although most of these attacks are happening outside of Moscow.

This is showing that people are getting restive with the war in Ukraine and the general situation in the country. The situation in the country is allowing criminals to act with more impunity, such as the attempted kidnapping in broad daylight of a Moscow businessman.

Although Moscow’s crime statistics used to be good, most of those statistics were gathered before the war. As the war continues to destabilize Russian society, the crime situation in Moscow will become even more unpredictable.

Petty Theft

In most previous years, petty theft was the primary concern for visitors to Moscow. The capital city was plagued by gangs of pickpockets and thieves, often groups of children and teenagers.

These thieves would often target tourists because they saw them as easy, lucrative targets. Places frequented by foreigners were and still are common targets for pickpockets.

The Australian government lists several hotspots for crime in its travel advisory, including popular tourist sites such as Red Square, markets such as Izmailovsky Market, and the metro.

Others warn tourists that even Moscow’s airport is a popular location for thieves, with many travelers being relieved of their passports before they even step into Moscow itself. Anywhere where there are crowds, keep an eye out for potential pickpockets.

Keep your valuables close to your body by placing them in a front pocket, money belt, or zipped travel bag. Storing valuables such as phones and wallets in backpacks or tote bags is unsafe as those are easily accessible to thieves.

Scams are also very common in Moscow. Some scammers draw their victims in before they even arrive in Russia through online dating services.

Beware of any overly friendly acquaintance that you meet online and that immediately asks for money. Common in-person scams include someone posing as a police officer and robbing you.

Police checks in Moscow are common, but always ask to see an ID before complying with anyone’s search request. Beware of any other distraction tactics thieves may use.

One common tactic popular with Moscow’s pickpocket gangs was the wallet scam, when thieves would drop a wallet in a public place. When an unsuspecting tourist would try to return it, they would accuse the tourist of stealing it and demand money.

Taxi cabs are also common perpetrators of scams.

The UK government  warns that unlicensed taxis sometimes look exactly like official taxis but end up robbing their passengers. The best way to stay safe when taking taxis is to ask your hotel to book a taxi for you or to use a ride-hailing app.

Violent crimes have also affected tourists in Moscow. Unfortunately, assault is one of the most common. The Canadian government warns its citizens about the possibility of racially motivated assault in all of Russia, including Moscow.

Amnesty International produced a report about the troubling prevalence of hate crimes in Russia, collecting incidents such as the 2003 suspected arson of a university that hosted many foreign students.

If you or a traveling companion are of African or Asian descent, you will be at elevated risk of assault in Moscow. Another common form of assault in Moscow is drink spiking.

Be careful when going out to bars and clubs, especially if you are a woman. There have been situations where criminals spike people’s drinks then rob them or even sexually assault them before leaving them outside in the Moscow cold.

Avoiding Bad Areas

There are a few neighborhoods in Moscow that tourists should probably avoid. Solntsevo is a neighborhood that has a reputation for lots of organized crime, so it’s better to stay away.

Other districts that have higher rates of crime are Maryino, Perovo, and Golyanovo Districts. Most of these districts are far away from the center so you probably won’t wander over by accident.

You should also avoid Garage Valley, a massive slum right near Moscow State University, and Bitsevski Park, which was home to a very prolific serial killer. Komsomolskaya Square, in front of one of the city’s train stations, is a hub for mostly low-level crime such as prostitution.

There are a few areas in Moscow that are safe during the day but should be avoided at night, such as the city’s many underpasses which are frequent haunts for robbers after dark.

• Drugs are highly illegal and the penalties for usage are strict. Drug raids often target foreigners, so make sure that all your activities are above board.
• Ever since the 2013 “anti-gay propaganda” law limiting freedom of expression for LGBT individuals, Russia has gotten more homophobic. Although Moscow is the most gay-friendly place in Russia, official discrimination and violence by street vigilantes is still common.
• Terrorist attacks in Moscow happen with some frequency, so keep an eye out when you are in public places.
