The resulting map shows you the lowest available prices to cities all over the world, letting you find deals in places you might not have ever thought to go.

Kayak’s Explore feature is a similar tool. You can enter exact travel dates or a certain month, then see which fares are available from your home gateway. 

3. Secret Flying

You can get alerts when fares go down when you sign up at Secret Flying , or, use their search tool to find great last minute deals on flights. Simply input your departure city, keep the arrival as “anywhere” and put the current month as the time you are looking to fly. Perfect for when you just want to get away, but you don’t care where to. Secret Flying also finds “mistake” fares, so be sure to sign up to get notifications so you can book them before they are gone!

You’d think that every hotel would have cheap rooms last minute, but that isn’t always the case. These sites will help you find a room that won’t break the bank with a spur of the moment trip! 

1. Hotel Tonight

A perennial favorite app among SmarterTravel editors, HotelTonight has been finding travelers’ deep hotel discounts since 2010. The app allows travelers to book same-day accommodations across the globe at discounts of up to 50 percent. If you don’t want to leave things until the literal last minute, though, the app also lets you book dates a little further out. The well-designed booking engine serves up clever recommendations and insider info—plus those remarkable markdowns. Keep an eye out for the Daily Drop, the biggest discount of the day (which you only have 15 minutes to book).

The site is known for discounted restaurant meals, fitness classes, and beauty services also has a last minute deals section that typically includes discounted hotel and resort stays. On the day I checked, options ranged from a $69 hotel near Niagara Falls to a four-star Times Square hotel for $77 a night.

3. Trip.com

Trip.com is your basic hotel booking site, and is great for finding a last minute deal. While they feature hotels all around the world, it’s particularly great for deals on hotels in Asia, so when you grab an amazing last minute flight to somewhere in Asia, head to trip.com to book your hotel! 

4. Last Minute Travel

As its name suggests, Last Minute Travel is dedicated solely to last minute travel deals. This wide-ranging site offers bargains on hotels, car rentals, cruises, transfers, and activities. Their hotel deals are amazing.  In a sample search, I found top-rated hotels in Paris from just $54 per night for a trip about two weeks out. The site has a Last Minute Travel Club for deeper discounts and rewards points to use toward free hotel stays. Membership is $50 per year.

Sometimes, booking a vacation package is the cheapest way to go for last minute travel. These sites are the best for one-stop shopping.

1. Airfarewatchdog

SmarterTravel’s sister site Airfarewatchdog has a nifty Weekender tool that lets you find a flight/hotel vacation package for upcoming weekends, just click the link and let the site do the rest of the work. 

2. CheapCaribbean.com

If you have a specific destination in mind, your best bet is often to focus on a website that deals with one region specifically. CheapCaribbean.com has last minute deals , many of them short-lived flash sales. Though you can’t hem and haw about whether or not to go, you’ll often have plenty of time to plan. For example, a four-night air/hotel package to the Dominican Republic might start at $509 per person for travel four to six months from now—but it must be booked in the next four days.

3. FunJet Vacations 

Book your flight and hotel together at FunJet Vacations . If you have a place in mind, enter the dates you want to go and the destination, and it will give you the best flight and hotel deals available. Their sales are great if you are open to where you want to go, and often have dates for travel within the month.

Sandals resorts has great deals for last minute travel. You often can get one night free, and when you start the booking process, have the option of booking your flight as well. You may even find availability for travel within the week.

When it comes to all-inclusive, Club Med usually comes to mind. Like Sandals, they often have fantastic last minute deals for when you are looking to book without much time to plan. This venerable travel site offers last minute deals on just about everything, but their all-inclusive search is one of the best as far as the bigger sites go. When I searched, I found a package for an all-inclusive stay in Cabo, including airfare, for $739, for travel next week.

How to Find Great Deals on Last Minute Tours

If you prefer having an itinerary made for you, and, let’s face it, if you are taking a last minute trip, it might be nice to not have to plan the entire trip, there are some great sites to book a last minute tour on. 

1. TourRadar

Book a tour of your destination as well as accommodations through TourRadar . There are several ways to search, including destination, adventure styles (food & culinary, active adventure, health & wellness, etc.), and date. Search for tours for travel in the next two weeks, or multiple months in advance. 

2. G Adventures

From Iceland to Turkey, G Adventures has tours to inspire and excite. They have available dates for travel throughout the year, but most are available to book for tours within a week or two. They have themed tours like the Northern Lights in Iceland, and Hiking the Azores—whatever, wherever you want to go. I found a four-day hiking tour of the Inca Trail in Peru for $881 departing within the week.

3. Contiki 

Contiki has a wide variety of tours to choose from, and the site has a handy last minute trips option to find a tour when you need one. When I searched, there was an Egypt and the Nile tour for $1,772, starting in just four days from when I searched! Most tours include accommodation, meals, transportation, admission to sites, and tour guides.

You may think it is hard to find deals to some of the top destinations, but as we have been mentioning, there are several options out there, no matter where you are going. Here are some sites that will help you plan your next getaway to some of the top spots.

Europe Deals

Lastminute.com .

Netherlands-based LastMinute.com also covers a range of last minute trip options, including flights, hotels, Eurostar train tickets, vacation packages, car rentals, theater tickets, and experiences. A Paris search turned up several highly-rated hotel options at $75-$85 per night at press time. This site also allows you to filter by hotels that offer free cancellation, a great perk if your travel plans change last minute. LastMinute.com also has “top-secret hotels” available for opaque booking, though in my Paris search they were actually a bit more expensive than the named hotels in my results.

Caribbean Vacations

While we love Sandals, we also love their sister company, Beaches . Beaches features two resorts in Jamaica and one in Turks and Caicos. Their last minute travel deals are similar to Sandals, where you can get one free night, and are able to book with just a couple of days in advance. 

Trips to New York

Chances are, if you are heading to NYC, you are going to want to see a Broadway show. Your best option for great last minute seats is TKTS . Download the app for your phone to see that days discounted tickets, and you can decide whether it is worth making the trek to the booth. Beats running out early in the morning to wait in line, and you are sure to get some deeply discounted tickets.

Last-minute family travel can either be astronomically expensive or can translate to big savings on airfare and hotel stays, if you're flexible and let the deals guide your decisions. When the stars align, these too-good-to-miss deals can create opportunities for family vacations you weren't even expecting.

But if you don't know where to look for these deals, then you'll miss out on the joy of spontaneous travel. We're here to change that. The first thing you should do is start following @TPG_Alerts, of course, but then read on for some of our favorite apps and websites for planning and setting (spontaneous) family travel in motion.

HotelTonight

Every frequent traveler should have this last-minute hotel-booking app on their phone. This app helps you find well-priced, centrally located hotels in cities around the world.

Using HotelTonight is simple. Launch the app, enter the city where you plan to stay and the dates of your travel (it doesn't have to literally be just for that night). Then scroll through the selection of available hotels, which are categorized with descriptions such as "solid," "basic" and "hip." You can look for same-day deals on hotels, but most hotels give the option of searching 100 days in advance of your travel date.

HotelTonight recently announced a new multiroom feature on the app, so you can book a block of rooms for larger families or groups traveling together. However, note that only some of the hotels let you select whether you need one bed or two, so select the room type, if possible, before booking if your family needs to ensure it has two beds.

HotelTonight has its own loyalty program, HT Perks , which earns you tiered elite status after spending certain amounts on hotel stays booked through the site. Each status level awards extra discounts on the already-discounted room rates.

A longtime favorite for finding cheap flights, the free Skyscanner app is also great to have on your phone when you need to find a last-minute car rental or hotel room. A particularly handy feature is how the flight options are broken down into either cheapest and best, with the latter category providing the most convenient connection times (something parents appreciate when it comes to those long-hauls with little ones).

A recent sweet deal was a roundtrip flight from Philadelphia to Orlando starting at $81 (2 weeks out from departure date). There's also a toll-free number to call to hear about unpublished fares.

Vayama.com focuses on international flights, and there are always good last-minute deals to be found right on the homepage, so you don't have to go clicking around. A recent search saw an American Airlines offer from New York to Casablanca, Morocco, starting at $676 (2 weeks out from departure date). While this app lets you book up to a week in advance (or 100 days in advance for stays up to 14 nights), it's really geared to last-minute bookings, so if there's a hotel you've had your eye on, this is your chance to stay there at a reduced rate. Another last-minute hotel-booking app is One:Night, which lists its same-day offers starting at 3 p.m. Though operated by Standard International — the parent company behind Standard Hotels, which are listed already — it also has several other stylish hotels, such as New York's Gramercy Park Hotel and LA's Viceroy L’ermitage Beverly Hills. Its app has app-only hotel deals, including super last-minute deals with its "Tonight Only" feature.

Expedia allows you to save big when you bundle a trip — meaning book your hotel and airfare together — and often has great last-minute prices, but for its most up-to-the-minute offerings, check the Unreal Deals tab. A recent search turned up a 4-night trip to Vegas, with a stay at The Palazzo tower (within the The Venetian), including airfare, from $605 per person (2 weeks out from departure date).

Little Rock

The capital of Arkansas, Little Rock is a lovely city on the Arkansas River with a range of activities for the whole family. Even if you are not into museums, the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum is a fascinating glimpse into the life of the 42nd American president, with a very realistic replica of the Oval Office and a number of original presidential artifacts. For history buffs, the Old State House Museum, located in the 1800s Greek Revival building, tells the story of Arkansas past. The Little Rock Zoo has over 725 animals from 200 species and the Magic Springs Theme and Water Park will keep the kids occupied for hours. Just outside of the city is shady, beautiful Pinnacle Mountain State Park, in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, a great place for a hike, bird watching, or nature exploration. Today a modern city in North Central Texas, Fort Worth was once a key trading post for cowboys in the late 19th century, as it was located at the end of the Chisholm Trail. Once known as the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus, Sarasota is a coastal city south of Tampa on the Gulf Coast. The Ringling Brothers are still very much present in Sarasota with the Ringling Museum of Art, but Sarasota is a popular tourist destination because of its wonderful wide sandy beaches. Siesta Beach is great place to cool off in the ocean, play some tennis, or let the kids enjoy in the playground. Lido Key Beach is located on Lido Key, a barrier island just off the Sarasota coast. The Mote Marine Laboratory has a large aquarium with stingrays, sharks, manatees, and other local animals, while Sarasota Jungle Gardens is a park and zoo with over 150 wild animals in a lush jungle setting. The South Florida Museum is an aquarium, planetarium, and history museum all under one roof. Bayfront Park is a lovely waterfront green space with a playground, a promenade, and lovely views of the city and the ocean.

A charming Oregon city on the Columbia River, Astoria is located near the Pacific Ocean and has a nice outdoorsy vibe. The city’s landmark is the Astoria Column, a large monument towering from the nearby hilltop, with a series of murals that feature the history of the area. The views from the hill are magnificent. Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island is a small town in Alabama, on an island on the Gulf Coast with the same name. The island is known for its wonderful long white beaches and large number of forts. One of them, 19th-century Fort Gaines, has a blacksmith shop and the original cannons. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary is great place to observe migrating birds in the park’s dunes, forest, and swamp. The Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab has a large aquarium with native marine species, exhibits that feature Alabama’s coastal habitats, and a boardwalk through the marsh. Fort Morgan is another island fort, a star masonry fort at the entrance to Mobile Bay. Sand Island Light is an old decommissioned lighthouse just off the island, near the entrance to the bay.

School breaks and summers during my childhood were packed with enrichment programs, summer camps , day trips to museums or beaches, amusement park visits, and heading up North to spend time with extended family. However, we’re a long way from the ‘90s, and things are incredibly expensive now.

With inflation impacting our daily lives , it’s no surprise that it’s hitting our vacation funds , too. There are several elements to consider when planning group travel that can be costly: the destination, transportation, food, entertainment, etc. It adds up very quickly. The average cost of a stateside vacation for an individual is $1,984. For couples, that average is $3,969. Families of four average $7,936, and a group of six can see upwards of $11,904.

To help you, we rounded up some travel deals, savings, and destination suggestions to help you plan a memorable and affordable summer trip or two, or even a staycation in your city.

Plane, Train, and Transportation Savings

• Frontier offers a Kids Fly Free program on select domestic routes, an exclusive offer for members of their Discount Den Club. For each adult ticket, children ages 2-14 can fly at no additional cost .
• Amtrak is a great way to get scenic views while skipping the traffic. It has over 500 destinations across the United States (and Canada). Plus, it offers savings that the whole family can enjoy, making it an affordable option for multigenerational travel. Senior citizens, veterans, members of the military, passengers with disabilities, and college students are all eligible for a fare discount. Infants travel for free, and fares for children ages 2-12 are half-price.
• Brightline, a Florida-based train service, also offers a family savings program . Similar to Amtrak’s family discount offer, infants (0-24 months) travel for free, and fares for children ages 2-12 are half-price. Families traveling in groups of four or more can see additional savings of 25 percent. ( Note: Brightline only services routes between Miami, Orlando, Ventura, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Boca Raton.)
• Amid the influx of gas prices, rideshare surging, and rental car shortages, there’s a lot of appeal in traveling to walkable cities to cut down on transportation costs in a destination. However, through city and county partnerships, Circuit is an app-based, on-demand electric vehicle shuttle service. In most cities, it’s free to hail a ride. In others, the highest rate is $3 per person. ( Note: Circuit only operates within cities in the following states: California, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, Texas, and Washington, DC.)

Museums, Aquariums, and Area Attractions

• Entertainment is one of the best parts of any trip, but it’s also one of the most costly elements. Don’t turn up your nose at using Groupon to find attractions. I have scored great deals on comedy shows, wine tastings, cooking classes, and last-minute excursions through the marketplace.
• Most of your major cities will offer City Passes or something similar, allowing you to explore multiple spots at a discounted flat rate instead of paying per attraction. I’ve done this several times in Orlando, Chicago, Seattle, and San Diego.
• Although it moves past the summer months, Jacksonville , Fla., hosts Kids Free November every year. Visitors and their families can enjoy free or discounted entry to many of the area’s local attractions. Some of the participating draws are the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens , the Museum of Science & History , and the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens .
• The National Park Service facilitates the Every Kid Outdoors program for nature lovers and eager learners in the fourth grade. Eligible children will receive a pass, valid for one year, that grants free admission into any national park (or its partners). The savings are for the entire family. Each fourth grader can bring their family and friends (if they are in the same vehicle) at no additional charge. For families without an eligible elementary student, children 15 and younger can visit any national park at no cost (for entry).
• If you bank at a credit union, you can purchase state-specific museum, aquarium, and amusement park tickets directly through them at a discounted price. Additionally, membership programs like AARP and AAA offer travel savings.

(Note: Recipients of state-supported subsidy programs may be eligible for free or discounted admission to educational attractions such as museums, art exhibits, zoos, and aquariums. Ask your local facility for details.)

Sail into Savings

• Family cruises can be ideal because they eliminate some of the individual elements associated with traveling, making it a cost-effective option. Plus, they have cool kid’s clubs for parents who want to sneak away for a night out, check out fine dining, or enjoy spa treatments. Adventurous families (think glacier dog sledding, zip-lining, and ATV tours) may enjoy sailing into Alaska on Holland America Line’s Koningsdam ship. With their current anniversary sale , cruises are up to 45% off, and third and fourth guests who book in the same stateroom sail for free. On select itineraries through Hawaii and the Caribbean, children 18 and under sail free when booked as the third or fourth guest in a stateroom.
• Other cruise lines, such as Norwegian, Star Clippers, and Royal Caribbean, regularly offer a Kids Sail Free promotion for guests 12 and under.

Let’s Go International 

• Another cost-effective travel option for families looking for fun in the sun is to book an all-inclusive vacation. Club Med Resorts have global destinations, each with a Kids Stay Free Package. Children under four are free. Parents will pay 50% for children between 4-11 and receive a 20% discount for each child 11-17.

Summer travel can be expensive, especially if you’re planning to go abroad and haven’t gotten all of your plans set yet. The longer you take to buy those airplane tickets and book those accommodations, the higher the overall cost is likely to be, too.

If you’re planning a last-minute summer vacation for the whole family, you might want to keep things a little closer to home this year. This can help keep costs down — a major plus for middle-class families on a budget — while ensuring you have a great time.

Here are some of the top U.S.-based trips middle-class families can still afford to take this summer.

Boone, North Carolina

One affordable — and beautiful — place to travel this summer is Boone, North Carolina.

“Boone might not be as popular as the lovely Asheville, NC, or the popular Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge that sit nearby, but it’s still a beautiful destination to get away,” said Jasmin Diaz, marketing specialist and travel expert at Smoky Mountains . The town is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, so you’re sure to get some stunning views this summer.

“Depending on where you live, you can easily drive to Boone. However, for those traveling from far away, you can snag a flight in July for $180 to $200 on average,” Diaz said. “That’s not bad from prime summertime. When looking for accommodation, you can easily find plenty of cabins under $200 a night. When I say cabins under $200, I don’t mean outdated ones either.”

There’s also plenty to do for the whole family while on a relatively tight budget. Aside from outdoor recreational activities like kayaking, swimming and hiking, there are also museums, local eateries with live music, breweries, distilleries and more.

“Prices for these attractions don’t come with a hefty price tag either,” Diaz said. “Overall, if you want a place to get away with mountain views and just simply enjoy nature, Boone is the place for you.”

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Another U.S. destination for those who want to enjoy an unforgettable outdoor experience is The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which spans the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. There, you’ll find plenty of hiking trails and wildlife like beer, elk and deer.

“Unlike many national parks, The Great Smoky Mountains boasts free entry, saving a significant chunk of your travel budget,” said Tim Hentschel, the CEO and co-founder of Hotel Planner . “Further, the park offers endless exploration opportunities without spending a dime…hostels and budget motels typically cost between $30 and $80 per night outside of peak season (July and October).”

Boston, Massachusetts

“With an enriching history, top educational institutions, beloved sports teams, old-world architecture, a burgeoning craft brewery scene and more, Boston has something for everyone,” said Kevin Matheson, general manager at Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall Boston .

A lot of activities there are family-friendly and affordable.

“History buffs can walk the iconic 2.5-mile Freedom Trail to visit 16 historically significant sites,” Matheson said. “Families with young children can enjoy the day in the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, or head to the Boston Children’s Museum for $1 admission days on Sundays.”

Hotels can be on the pricey side, but you can find some deals for around $200 to $300 a night if you book soon.

Margaritaville at Sea

If you’re looking for a multi-destination summer trip, try out Margaritaville at Sea.

“You can go from Palm Beach, FL to the Bahamas on a 2-night, 3-day excursion starting at $100,” Hentschel said. “In order to attract new customers, Margaritaville at Sea has slashed pricing on their cruises. If you’ve never been to the Bahamas, this is probably the cheapest way to go. And they definitely serve Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Cheeseburgers in Paradise.'”

Alburquerque, New Mexico

Head to the Southwest’s Albuquerque, New Mexico for some history, unique sites and activities the whole family will enjoy.

“Attractions include the Petroglyph National Monument and Old Town,” said Tim White, a travel expert and the founder of Milepro . “Families can visit the Albuquerque BioPark and Balloon Museum…for stays, visitors can choose from economical chain hotels to locally owned inns, particularly around Central Avenue. Daily expenses here can average around $130.”

Salt Lake City, Utah

“Salt Lake City, Utah provides an affordable base with a daily meal budget of about $90,” said Pierce Hogan, the owner of Varied Lands . “The Clark Planetarium and Hogle Zoo are great for kids, while adults can explore Temple Square. City Creek Center offers a variety of shopping options.”

As for accommodations, expect to spend around $110 per night.

Syracuse, New York

If you want to introduce your kids to the theater but don’t want to spend a ton to do it, go off-Broadway to Syracuse and see some shows at the Landmark Theater, Syracuse State or Palace Theater.

“Syracuse is a theater town,” Hentschel said. “The quality of performances is on par with Off-Broadway in New York City, with much less expensive tickets, hotels and restaurants. While you’re there, tour Syracuse University and attend a sporting event or two.”

Hotels in Syracuse cost around $100 to $150 a night, though you might be able to find cheaper accommodations by going a little further out.

Omaha, Nebraska

“Omaha, Nebraska is ideal for families interested in educational trips,” said White. “Major attractions [in Omaha, Nebraska] include the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Durham Museum. Families can also explore Lauritzen Gardens or the Children’s Museum.”

As for costs, you can keep things reasonable, too. According to White, a family can keep to a daily budget of around $140 — less if they opt for budget-friendly hotels around the Old Market area.
