How to Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Ljubljana

Walking Around Ljubljana, Slovenia

Where to Start - Self-Guided Walking Tour of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Lace-up your walking shoes because today I am going to show you how to enjoy the beautiful city of Ljubljana, Slovenia, at your own pace. A self-guided walking tour is the perfect way to see Ljubljana’s historical landmarks, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. Throughout my self-guided walking tour, I saw Ljubljana’s famous squares (trgs), unique bridges, magnificent churches, and a medieval castle. The best part, I was able to see the entire city of Ljubljana in a single day.

My self-guided walking tour of Ljubljana began at my hotel. During my visit, I stayed close to the banks of the Ljubljanica River near the iconic Dragon Bridge. From my hotel, I was able to follow the Ljubljanica River until it reached the Dragon Bridge.

I Began my Self-Guided Walking Tour of Ljubljana at My Hotel

The photo below shows the famous Dragon Bridge. Just past the Dragon Bridge, is the Ljubljana Cathedral and Mestni Trg (Town Square.) It is the best place to begin a self-guided walking tour of Ljubljana.

The Dragon Bridge - 4 Mythical Dragons Protecting Ljubljana

There are three famous bridges in Ljubljana, Slovenia. On my way to Ljubljana’s Town Square ( Mestni Trg), I crossed the famed Dragon Bridge. The bridge is lined with four copper dragons, a mythical creature found throughout the city of Ljubljana.

The Dragon Bridge - Ljubljana, Slovenia

In addition to the four dragons on the Dragon Bridge, visitors to Ljubljana will find dragons throughout the city. The first images of dragons were found on the Ljubljana coat of arms during the medieval period. Today, the dragon is prominently displayed throughout Ljubljana and serves as the symbolic protector of the city.

One of the Dragons that Flanks the Dragon Bridge

When crossing the Dragon Bridge, be sure to stop and appreciate the beautiful view of the Ljublijanica River.

Mestni Trg - Ljubljana's Town Square

After crossing the Dragon Bridge, I came into the first of Ljubljana’s trgs. Trg is the name given to squares in most Slavic languages. Mestni Trg translates to Town Square and is home to Ljubljana Cathedral, Robba Fountain, and Ljubljana Town Hall.

I visited Mestni Trg on Christmas Morning, which meant the Ljubljana Cathedral was closed for Christmas Mass. You will notice in the photos below that Mestni Trg is practically empty. Typically, the square is full of people, both locals and tourists alike.

The Ljubljana Cathedral Seen from Mestni Trg

Unfortunately, during my visit to Mestni Trg, Ljubljana Town Hall was under partial renovation, which made it difficult to get a good photo of both the Robba Fountain and Ljubljana Town Hall.

The Robba Fountain dates back to 1751. Many people don’t know that the fountain in Mestni Trg is actually a replica. The original Robba Fountain was moved to the National Gallery in 2006.

Ljubljana Town Hall was Under Construction

Ljubljana Town Hall is the final of the three attractions in Mestni Trg. The original building was constructed in 1484, with renovations taking place in the early 1700s. After the renovations, Ljubljana Town Hall went from having Gothic-style architecture to having more of a Venetian inspiration.

Ljubljana Town Hall

Prešernov Trg - Presernov Square

From Mestni Trg, it is a short walk to Prešernov Trg, which is the second of the three famous squares in Ljubljana that I visited. Prešernov Trg (or square) is named after the famous Slovenian poet France Prešeren. During the Christmas season, Prešernov Trg is home to a giant Christmas Tree that sits near the center of the square.

I took the photo below from the Ljubljana Castle Tower. You can see the massive size of the Christmas Tree and how it sits just off the center of Prešernov Square.

Presernov Trg - Seen from the Ljubljana Castle

The most famous building in Prešernov Trg is the orangish-colored Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. Although I did not go inside the Church of the Annunciation due to it being Christmas Morning, I was treated to a spectacular show of ringing church bells. Below and to the right, I have linked a video of the church bells ringing for the Christmas holiday at Prešernov Trg.

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

The Triple Bridge, another one of Ljubljana’s famous bridges, is located just outside of Prešernov Trg. I will discuss the Triple Bridge in the section below, but wanted to point out that if you stand in the center of Prešernov Trg and look towards the Triple Bridge, you will get a great view of Ljubljana Castle.

Looking Towards Ljubljana Castle from Presernov Trg

Be sure to walk up the steps of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation to get a great view of Prešernov Trg. You will also be able to see Ljubljana Castle sitting atop a large bluff.

Presernov Trg - Ljubljana, Slovenia

Triple Bridge - Ljubljana's Oldest and Most Famous Bridge

Just outside of Prešernov Trg is the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), which is Ljubljana’s oldest and most famous bridge. As its name implies, the Triple Bridge is actually three bridges that span over the Ljubljanica River.

The center of the three bridges is the oldest bridge in Ljubljana, dating back to the 13th Century. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the other two bridges were added.

The Triple Bridge

During my self-guided walking tour of Ljubljana, I crossed the Triple Bridge on my way to my next destination, Kongresni Trg. I also think it is helpful to note that there are free public restrooms near the Triple Bridge. To get to these restrooms, follow the signs down the steps to the edge of the Ljubljanica River.

The Triple Bridge - Ljubljana, Slovenia

Kongresni Trg - Congress Square

The third square that I visited during my self-guided walking tour of Ljubljana was Kongresni Trg, which translates into Congress Square.  Kongresni Trg gets its name from the post-Napoleonic Congress of Ljubljana. I don’t want to get too into the history of Kongresni Trg, but I do want to point out that it has been an important part of Slovenian history.

Kongresni Trg from the Ljubljana Castle

I visited Kongresni Trg on Christmas Day. As a result, most of the buildings were closed except for a few small Christmas Markets.

Kongresni Trg - Ljubljana, Slovenia

One of my favorite buildings in Ljubljana is located on the edge of Kongresni Trg. This building is the yellow-colored Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity.

Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity

Butchers' Bridge - Also Known as the Lock Bridge or Love Bridge

After leaving Kongesni Trg, I had to retrace my steps to get to the next tourist sight. The Butchers’ Bridge is the most unique bridge in Ljubljana. Also known as the Lock Bridge or Love Bridge, it is here that couples have placed locks on the bridge and then dropped the keys into the Ljubljanica River.

The Lock Bridge - Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Butchers’ Bridge gets its name as it was built on the site of the former butchers’ booths. Lining the Butchers’ Bridge are statues that were created by Slovenian sculptor Jakov Brdar.

The final stop on my walking tour of Ljubljana was Ljubljana Castle. Although it is possible to walk to Ljubljana Castle, I highly recommend taking the funicular.

The Ljubljana Castle Funicular

I created a separate page highlighting my visit to Ljubljana Castle. That page can be found by clicking HERE (link coming soon.)

Ljubljana Castle

I took a self-guided tour of Ljubljana and did not hire a guide. In my opinion, a guide is not necessary to enjoy Ljubljana. That being said, I know some people enjoy being led around by a local expert. I have linked a few tours below that I feel would do a great job highlighting the beautiful city of Ljubljana.

One day in Ljubljana Itinerary (map & travel tips)

Love it? Share it!

Ljubljana is one of those European destinations where the city doesn’t have a major ‘world famous’ attraction, but it is the little things that makes Ljubljana a special place to visit. And in one day in Ljubljana itinerary you can cover a lot, and on foot!

Ljubljana is the capital city of Slovenia in the Balkans. The city is known as the ‘green city’ (2016) and has one of the largest car-free zones in the European Union.

Ljubljana is not only environmentally friendly, but it offers delightful things that will make any traveler fall in love with the medieval town vibes.  Ljubljana is a compact walking city, full of historic nuances, and presents a unique mix of Central European and the Mediterranean charm.

The quality of life in Slovenia is very good (I mean green city, pretty parks and walking areas – ahh, slow living bliss). Ljubljana in particular encourages the use of locally produced food in hotels and restaurants, and they are DELICIOUS!

Preparing for your visit to Ljubljana

ljubljana self guided tour

Before we share our jam packed Ljubljana in a day itinerary, here are some quick tips.

Ljubljana/Slovenia belongs to the European Union, and they follow the Schengen Agreement (for those requiring a visa to Europe). The currency of Slovenia is euros.

Ljubljana is served by Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (Brnik Airport), which is an international airport serving the capital city and it is the largest airport in Slovenia. We flew to Zagreb in Croatia and reached Ljubljana by road.

Zagreb to Ljubljana: 1.45 hours (by car), and 2.50 hours (by train)

Where to stay in Ljubljana : We stayed at the Grand Hotel Union during our trip

Start your morning with traditional Slovenian Food

Hey, welcome to Ljubljana!

Wake up to the smell of delicious coffee, warm Eggs Lorraine, and toast in the heart of Ljubljana. The city centre has a ton of restaurants, and cafes to serve you breakfast and brunch in the morning.

Our favorite for breakfast is Le Petit Cafe . You can try homemade granola with dried fruits and it is served with yogurt or soy milk. Don’t forget to try Slovenian Cream Cake with coffee – the cake is the perfect level of sweetness (like not super sweet, which I like).

Slovenian Cream Cake

I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I love their cream cakes, and I had a lot (like shamelessly a lot!). You can find these delicious Slovenian cream cakes at local bakeries and McDonald’s too (located at the centre).

Walk around Ljubljana old town for the first half of the day

After breakfast, strap on your comfortable walking shoes and get marching. Ljubljana is best explored wandering through the old town centre, admiring the bridges over the Ljubljanica River, checking out the Central Market and the various art nouveau buildings along.

The old town of Ljubljana will bring in memories of pretty medieval cities like those of Vienna and Prague . Although Slovenia was part of erstwhile Yugoslavia and is a part of the Balkans region , the capital city of Ljubljana looks and feels very different from Belgrade or Sarajevo.

Butcher Bridge and river in Ljubljana

Our local tour/friend said, ‘the closer you get to Zagreb, the Austro-Hungarian and Italian influence is more evident, and Slovenia is definitely special in the realm of Balkans history.’

Slovenia was the first country to break away from Yugoslavia, along with Croatia . They declared formal independence on June 25, 1991.

Yugoslavia came into existence after World War I in 1918 with the merger of the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs with the Kingdom of Serbia (with Belgrade as the capital city). Yugoslavia became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929, and before its dissolution, it comprised 6 states.

Soak in the vibes of the Prešernov trg Square

As you walk through the cobblestoned lanes, you will arrive at this beautiful square. Prešernov trg Square is the heart of the historic Ljubljana city. When you stand at the square’s centre, you will be surrounded by many of the recognizable and iconic landmarks of Ljubljana.

Beautiful Prešernov trg Square - Centre

At the central square, you will find the statue of Slovene national poet France Prešeren; and the square is named after him. The statue uniquely faces the window where Prešeren’s “muse” once lived.

On the north side of the square is the grand Baroque-style Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. And then there is the Hauptmann’s House which represents an architectural masterpiece considered to be one of the few buildings in Prešeren Square to have survived the earthquake of 1895.

Heart of Prešernov trg Square

The Prešeren Monument is the centerpiece of Square and it is one of the most notable monuments in Ljubljana. And don’t worry you won’t miss this!

To the south of the Square is the River Ljubljanica, and the famous Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). In the eastern part of Prešeren stands the Central Pharmacy building; to the west, the square is lined by Wolf Street (Wolfova Ulica) bound for Congress Square (Kongresni Trg).

Admire the pinkish-red facade of the Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is a Franciscan church located on the Prešeren Square in Ljubljana. It is hard to miss the church from the square or from across the River.

View of Franciscan Church from Triple Bridge

The Franciscan Monastery along with the Church of the Annunciation is the two buildings that provide a charming character to the Prešernov trg square. The church was built in the 17th century, and the façade was completed around 1700. The church has undergone numerous renovations, especially in the 19th century. And in 1993, the church was adorned with a copper statue of St. Mary, which is Ljubljana’s largest Madonna statue.

It is important to note that until the end of the 18th century, the monastery was the home of Augustine monks. And the pinkish-red color of the facade is symbolic of the Franciscan monastic order.

Cross the Triple Bridge

The Triple Bridge is a group of three bridges built across the Ljubljanica River. The bridge was built in 1929 by Joze Plecnik. It connects the historical and the medieval town of Ljubljana, on one bank, and the modern city, on the other.

Architectural details of the Triple Bridge

The origins of the bridge date back to a wooden bridge in this location from the 13th century. It was called the Old Bridge (Stari Most) and later renamed the Lower Bridge (Spodnji most).

The Lower Bridge was replaced by a new bridge designed and named Franz’s Bridge, (Frančev most) in honor of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria in the mid 19th century. The essentials of the bridge have been preserved until today, and there is an inscription which reads “To Archduke Franz Karl in 1842 by the Town”.

Triple Bridge in Ljubljana

Stop here for a photograph, and admire the Franciscan Church and the square.

Shop/try out local products at the Central Market

When you cross the Triple Bridge, you are at the Central Market , which was also built by Jože Plečnik. Ljubljana’s Central Market is not only a place to shop local produce but historically it served as a meeting place for the community.

Central Market Views

The Market is an open-air shopping market, and there are a series of small food shops along the river Ljubljanica, which are pretty colorful, as you walk through. These are called ‘Plečnik’s Covered Market’.

You must not miss the Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna) here. Every Friday from mid-March until the end of October, Pogačarjev trg square hosts this unique food market/event where chefs of Slovenian restaurants prepare various dishes from all over the world (sort of like our food festivals in North America).

The outdoor markets surrounding the area is also a good place to buy fresh Slovenian fruits and vegetables. They are all locally grown.

Butcher’s Bridge and the sculptures

One of the newer bridges in Ljubljana is the Butchers’ Bridge. This footbridge connects the Ljubljana Central Market and the Petkovšek Embankment (Petkovškovo nabrežje).

This bridge is very unique with sculptures and figures from Ancient Greek and Christian/Jewish mythology, and all of it depicts a story

Locks on Butcher's Bridge Ljubljana

  • There is a sculpture of Adam and Eve, who after being shamed and banned from the Paradise, are seen walking towards Ljubljana Cathedral
  • Then there is the Satyr, startled by the Serpent
  • Prometheus, shown disemboweled, in punishment

As you walk across the Butcher’s Bridge, you will notice the stunning glass floor, and the padlocks on the bridge rails. The entire bridge looks beautiful, and the view of the old town and the river Ljubljanica is super pretty from here.

Pose in front of the Dragon Bridge – Zmajski Most

Another bridge which is located not far from the Central Market is the famous Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most). The statues of the green dragons on the bridge are iconic to the city of Ljubljana, and you must take a photo with the dragon here to remember your trip! It is without a doubt, one of the fairytale bridges in Slovenia.

At the Dragon Bridge Ljubljana

The bridge is located between Kopitar Street and Ressel Street, which can be found to the north of the Ljubljana Central Market. The bridge was built in the early 20th century, and the dragon symbolizes the city and provides protection to Ljubljana.

It is believed that the monster – dragon, was gradually transformed into a symbolic protector of the city – of power, courage, and wisdom.

Explore the buildings around Mestni trg square

Mestni trg square is the major (and old) town square of Ljugbliana. The buildings and structures in and around the Mestni trg square dates back to the 12th century.

It was the centre of the medieval city and was surrounded by important administrative offices and palaces. Take a wander here, and you will find Baroque palaces, Town Hall, and the popular Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers (designed by Venetian born sculptor Francesco Robba).

Baroque architecture gives Ljubljana its unique charm. Many of the city’s churches and buildings were built in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1511, in Baroque style.

Ljubljana’s Town Hall (also known as Mestna hiša, Magistrat, or Rotovž), is the seat of the Municipality of Ljubljana. The town hall building was influenced by Venetian architecture and was built in the late 15th century. The Town Hall features four exhibition spaces: the Glass Atrium, the Historical Atrium, the Central and Right Atriums. Here you can learn about the various projects undertaken by the Municipality.

The Robba Fountain , also located at the square, is modelled on the famous Roman fountains and is considered to be one of Ljubljana’s best known Baroque monuments. It was created in the mid 18th century.

The sculptures of the Fountains reflect the three Carniolan river gods: the Sava, the Ljubljanica, and the Krka. The Fountain’s ground plan is shaped in the form of Ljubljana’s ancient three-leaf town seal.

Visit Ljubljana Cathedral aka St. Nicholas’s Church

The gorgeous Ljubljana Cathedral was built on the site of a Romanic church, which dates back to 1262. When the Ljubljana Diocese was established in 1461, the church underwent various renovations and additions, it also suffered destruction under the Turks.

Old town Ljubljana

From the exterior, the Cathedral looks like any other in Central Europe, but the interiors are very pretty and deserve a visit. There are stunning detailed frescoes, and cream and gold decorations, together with the compact/coziness of the cathedral bring in a calming effect to the visitor. There are ornate choir stalls and angels set up at the altar.

The late Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral to celebrate 1250 years of Slovenian Christianity in 1996.

Break for lunch at Stari Trg Square

From St Nicholas’s Church head towards Stari Trg Square (5-minute walk); this square was the seat of the former medieval part of the city. Here you will find tons of cafes and restaurants to break for lunch and rest your legs.

  • Cafe Romeo ($$) – This cafe is lovely if you are craving pancakes or crepes for brunch. They have outdoor seating areas which are great for summers
  • Landerik ($$) – Stop here for a hearty bowl of salad in the afternoon or any European and Slovenian cuisine. The restaurant interiors are very classy and stunning. (Vegan option available)

Both the restaurants are located just minutes away from the Ljubljana Castle, and the Tourist Information Centre.

Pose in front of ‘LJUBLJANA’ (afternoon one day in Ljubljana itinerary)

Ljubljana Signage near the tourism office

From the Stari trg square, head to the Gornji trg square, which will bring you to the foot of the Castle Hill, where the Ljubljana Castle is located. But before climbing or taking the funicular ride to the castle, we recommend stopping at the Tourist Office and snapping a photo of the Ljubljana City Signage.

The ambience in and around the signage is worth stopping for an Instagrammable shot.

Climb or take the funicular to the Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is a MUST visit for your Ljubljana one day itinerary. This attraction has an entry fee and is completely worth it.  The views from Castle Hill over the city centre of Ljubljana is super stunning.

Views from Ljubljana Castle

The castle stands on a hill, and it was originally a medieval fortress from the 11th and 12th centuries. The way you see the Castle today was formed in the 15th century.

Being a fortress in the early years means that it was used as a defense structure, especially as it occupied a strategic position in the city – for protection and for keeping an eye on the enemies. This castle is depicted on the city’s coat of arms, along with a dragon on top.

Views from Ljubljana Castle tower

We spent about 1-1.50 hours at the Castle complex, and it was not crowded during our visit. You can climb the hill to reach the top, but we took a funicular ride, and explored the towers, took pictures, and then visited various exhibition halls. During our visit, an exhibition on the Yugoslavian history and Slovenia’s origins were on display.

The puppet museum (permanent exhibition) is a must stop by, along with the interactive centre to learn about the castle’s history and its role in shaping Slovenian history.

Puppet Museum Ljubljana Castle

Entrance Ticket information for Ljubljana Castle – One day in Ljubljana Itinerary

Castle ticket is 10 EUR ($13 USD) and it includes entry to the Viewing Tower, Virtual Castle (a short movie about Castle’s history), Slovenian History exhibition, Museum of Puppetry, and Once Upon a Time exhibition.

We bought a combined Castle Ticket with return ride with funicular railway (up & down) + access to exhibitions, museums. Here is a combined ticket with sightseeing in Ljubljana.

  National Gallery of Slovenia

Entrance of National Gallery of Slovenia

The National Gallery of Slovenia is the prime museum of historical art in the country. It holds the largest collection of fine art (from the High Middle Ages to the 20th century), including a  permanent exhibition of works by Zoran Mušič, who was one of Europe’s leading modernist painters.

The permanent collection at the gallery consists of various historical periods with over 600 displays of Slovenian and European art. There is an entry fee for the gallery, which is 10 euros ($12 USD).

Check out the art nouveau buildings

If you don’t wish to spend time and money at an art museum, keep your eyes peeled for various art nouveau buildings and landmarks in the city of Ljubljana. This style of architecture came into existence at the turn of the 20th century, and the influence of the Viennese Secession is clearly visible.

Vurnik House or the Cooperative Business Bank

  • The Dragon Bridge is one of the earliest examples of an art nouveau structure in the city. It is important to note that the rise of art nouveau buildings was encouraged and mostly designed by local artists.
  • Vurnik House or the Cooperative Business Bank building is one of the unique art nouveau buildings. This house was located near our hotel – Grand Hotel Union , in the Miklošičeva Ulica street.
  • Right next to it, the People’s Loan Bank (the one with Zadružna Zveza sign on it) in a white façade with blue metal details. You can start at the Miklošičeva Ulica street, which is also the Art Nouveau Quarter, and then make your way to the Prešeren Square.
  • Prešeren Square is home to the Hauptmann House , which is another art nouveau building, and it will remind you of the Flatiron in NYC.

Late afternoon stop by the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church also known as the Orthodox Church is an Eastern Orthodox church building located in Trubar Park. You can find it between Bleiweis Street and Prešeren Street, north of the Museum of Modern Art and west of the National Gallery of Slovenia.

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church

Make a quick stop here, as you make your way to the Tivoli City Park from the National Gallery of Slovenia.

The church was built in Serbo-Byzantine Revival style, and amidst the greenery, it looks beautiful with its five domes on top. It was built in the early 20th century by Ivan Bricelj, and the interior frescoes were painted by various Serbian painters.

Tivoli City Park (Mestni park Tivoli) or Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli)

We enjoyed a nice stroll at the Tivoli City Park in the evening.

Walk at the Ljubljana Tivoli City Park

Tivoli Park is Ljubljana’s largest park. It is located on the western outskirts of the Center District. It was designed in 1813 by the French engineer Jean Blanchard and was created by joining together the parks which had surrounded Podturn and Cekin Mansions.

This beautiful park covers an area of approximately five square kilometres, with manicured ornamental flower beds, unique trees, and numerous statues and fountains.

Tivoli Park’s scenic Jakopič Promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče) is home to art/photo exhibitions. It was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik and is open throughout the year.

Tivoli Park's scenic Jakopič Promenade (Jakopičevo sprehajališče) is home to art/photo exhibitions. It was designed by the architect Jože Plečnik and is open throughout the year.

The park area blends beautifully into the slopes of the Rožnik hill, and you can take a stroll by embarking on various walking paths.

End the sightseeing with drinks at The Nebotičnik Cafe

Finish your one day in Ljubljana itinerary with drinks at The Nebotičnik Cafe. This cafe is located on the top of the Nebotičnik (Skyscraper) building.

All day long we explored medieval and art nouveau landmarks of the city of Ljubljana, the Skyscraper brings in the architecture created between the two World Wars and one with beautiful city views from all directions.

The Skyscraper was built in 1933 and was the tallest building in the Balkans at the time of its construction. The sky rise building still serves its original purpose and houses shops, restaurants, offices, and residential flats.

Next to the Skyscraper, you will find Ljubljana’s first modern shopping arcade – project, which was later abandoned and never materialized.

Dinner at the Petkovšek Embankment

ljubljana self guided tour

For dinner, head back to the Prešernov trg Square. In the late evening, the square, and the banks along the Ljubljanica River are stunning, and it comes alive with lights, and music.

We decided to relax at a cafe bar in the lively Petkovšek Embankment area (by the river). With a meat and cheese platter, and sprinkling wine we called it a day, in the stunning city of Ljubljana.

Sightseeing Map: Ljubljana in a day

You can use this map for a self guided walking tour of Ljubljana. It starts at the Grand Union Hotel, where we stayed at.

Is one day in Ljubljana enough?

We stayed in Ljubljana for 3 days, but definitely covered all of the old town highlights in one day. The rest of the time we embarked on day trips from the capital city. Being a compact city, you can definitely cover the major attractions in one day.

Also, note that many of these attractions do not have any entrance fee and can be visited for free, like the bridges, Tivoli Park, cathedrals, etc.

If you are staying in Ljublaja more than a day, we recommend adding these destinations to your Slovenia itinerary

  • Lake bled – Take a day trip to Lake Bled from Ljubljana. There are many tour operators offering this trip. You can also use public transportation to reach there. In a day, you can explore the Bled Castle and the stunning lake. You can book your tour here
  • Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle – Another option is to visit the largest caves in Europe from Ljubljana – Postojna Caves & Predjama Castle. This tour is only for 5 hours and it takes on a unique historical and geographical tour.

Travel Tips for Ljubljana Slovenia

Here are some quick tips to prepare for your trip to Ljubljana Slovenia.

Central Market Ljubljana Views from the embarkment

Travel documents

Slovenia is located in the Balkans region and is bordered by Austria , Croatia , Hungary , and Italy. It is completely landlocked.

It is part of the European Union, and follows the Schengen Agreement. So if you require a visa to travel to Europe in the Schengen zone, then you will need a visa for visiting Slovenia as well. The same applies for its neighboring countries.

As always don’t forget travel insurance to Europe.

Budgeting for one day in Ljubljana itinerary

Although not a budget destination like many of the Balkans destinations, you can save a ton in Ljubljana by eating local, booking your accommodation, transportation and flights in advance.

Sightseeing costs can be zero if you don’t visit museums or the castle interiors. There is also a free walking tour that covers the city center highlights in a few hours.

Other than that budget for the following,

  • Hotel/Airbnb : $80 USD (twin occupancy, mid range near the city center)
  • Food : As low as $25 USD (3 meals at fast food chains, local bakeries. If you eat at a nice cafe, or restaurant the prices are higher – like the ones mentioned in this post)

Best time to visit Ljubljana

We prefer visiting Europe in the shoulder months, and Ljubljana is also best explored during this time. The best time to visit Ljubljana is from April to May or from September to October. These spring and fall months are great as the compact city is not super crowded, and accommodation prices are decent too.

Packing for Ljubljana Slovenia

Ljublaja experiences 4 seasons. It’s coldest month is January (like in many other European cities). Here average high-temperature is 3.4°C (38.1°F) and an average low-temperature of -2.5°C (27.5°F) in the winters.

  • Winters: Take woolen clothing, like parka, warm boots, scarf, gloves, cardigans

July is the hottest month in Ljubljana with an average temperature of 19.5°C (67°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 10 in July. The wettest month is October.

  • Summer : Ljubljana has warm weather in the months from June to August, and during this time you can wear cotton clothing – linen pants, cotton tops, flowy dresses.
  • Fall/Spring : In the fall and early spring months, expect temperatures to drop in the evenings, so do pack a warm cardigan and an insulated waterproof jacket. Rain and/or overcast days are common during the fall months.

Because there is a ton of walking in the city, do remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. Here is what I wore in Ljubljana.

Must eat/drink/buy from Ljubljana Slovenia

Here are some of the must eats in the capital city of Ljubljana

  • Slovenian Cream Cake/Kremsnita : Sweet cake, puff pastry made of eggs, cream and milk
  • Štruklji : Slovene dish, made of dough and filling of choice
  • Also try their wines, meat and cheese platters

You can try Slovene culinary delights by taking a walking food tour . If you are in town, during the Open Market season (culinary event at the Central Market), do try out various dishes prepared by some of the finest chefs in the country.

You will surely find a ton of local produce, dishes to taste in these traditional markets – Ljubljana lives by the principle ‘from local field, to local table, to the guest’ , in the best way possible.

A green city, and a destination that is open and friendly towards visitors, from its architectural heritage to culinary delights, Ljubljana will not disappoint you!

We hope you found our one day in Ljubljana itinerary useful in planning your trip!

How to Spend One Day in Ljubljana

one day in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the perfect place to use as your base while exploring Slovenia. In just one hour and 30 minutes (or less) you can drive to the seaside, the Alps , see castles , or vineyards , but today I am sharing all of my tips for how to spend one day in Ljubljana!

There are many reasons to visit Slovenia and especially Ljubljana. There is a calmness and slowness to this city that not many European capitals can claim. It is the perfect size; walkable, bike-able, and sustainable.

Here is my overly comprehensive guide to all of the main tourist spots in Ljubljana. Once you make your way through these you can check out some of my other articles to explore Ljubljana and Slovenia in more depth.

Planning a trip to Slovenia? These articles might help.

  • Slovenia Itinerary Planner
  • 20 Beautiful Day Trips from Ljubljana
  • Traditional Slovenian Food Guide (Includes a restaurant survival guide)

Table of Contents

An Introduction…

Everyone always asks, “How the hell do I pronounce Ljubljana?” and the most common response by locals is “lyoo-BLYAH-nah” but also simply “lublana” without the J’s will work. You will even get bonus points from locals as they pronounce it this way. As you are sitting there saying these out loud to yourself, they sound very similar. You get the point!

Language? Slovenian (or Slovene) but you might be happy to know that a lot of Slovenians speak some English, especially in Ljubljana. If you would like to learn a few phrases or words before visiting check out my article packed full of resources to help you learn Slovene .

Currency? Euro

Tipping? While it is not expected it is often appreciated. Usually, when taking a taxi round up, when dining out leave 10% or round up depending on the restaurant. Credit and Debit cards are taken almost everywhere (in Ljubljana), and ATM machines ( Bankomat ) are found all over the city.

Electrical Outlets? Slovenia uses the same 230 V, 50 Hz system as many EU countries with the standard two-pin plug and socket. If you are coming from the US check your devices if they are single voltage or dual. Avoiding bringing hair dryers or straighteners abroad as even with a converter and adaptor they can be damaged.

How to get to Ljubljana

If you are traveling by bus or train from a neighboring country you will arrive in the center of Ljubljana.

If you are flying to Ljubljana you will land at the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, which like most airports, isn’t in the center. It is in Brnik which is about a 25-30 minute drive.

The cheapest option is by bus which runs from the city center to the airport and back throughout the day. It leaves the airport at the top of the hour. Look for bus number 28, the journey takes about 50 minutes, but the tickets are less than €5. Here is the timetable to help plan your trip.

Book Taxi offers transfers for €28 . If a taxi quotes more than €35 for the city center then just simply move on to the next. *Be especially mindful of this as a friend was scammed and charged €70!*

Alternatively, if you want a cheaper option, but not a bus, there are various shuttle companies that run from the airport to the city center but it is advised to book in advance.

I always recommend GoOpti for airport transfers from Venice airport (which is often the cheapest way to travel to Slovenia). They are incredibly reliable and efficient with various pricing depending on your wallet and patience.

One Day in Ljubljana Itinerary

Ljubljana castle | ljubljanski grad.

ljubljana castle

This iconic 12th-century castle sits on a hill overlooking Ljubljana. You truly cannot miss it when visiting the city. The Ljubljana Castle has a little bit of everything from permanent and temporary exhibits, guided and private tours, an escape game (available in English), audioguides, six stations with costumed characters, viewing towers, penitentiary, events for children, souvenir shop and cafe, and two restaurants.

For up to date info on hours and pricing head over to the Ljubljana Castle website.

zlikrofi slovenia

Food Recommendation:

Gostilna Na Gradu is one of my favorite restaurants in Slovenia. Every dish has been incredible and the wine pairings are always spot on. If you are looking to treat yourself I highly recommend planning for at least one meal here.

What to try: anything honestly but if you see žlikrofi on the menu, it is a personal favorite.

Prešeren Square

Possibly the most photographed area of Ljubljana is Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg ) . It is named after France Prešeren, a Slovenian poet from the 1800s. His statue can be found here.

From here you are standing near or within view of a lot of the “must-see” sights of Ljubljana.

Franciscan Church of the Annunciation |  Frančiškanska cerkev

ljubljana self guided tour

The square is absolutely dominated by this peach (they claim it is red but it is definitely more of an orangish peach at this point) colored church. It is incredibly photographic and no photo of Prešeren Square is complete without either it or from the opposite view the Ljubljana Castle.

Triple Bridge |  Tromostovje

triple bridge ljubljana in a day

A very famous site in Ljubljana is the Triple Bridge, a group of three (foot) bridges that cross the Ljubljanica River . The middle bridge was completed in 1842 and the two exterior bridges were made as footbridges to manage traffic at that time. Now all three of them are for pedestrian and bicycle use only. The current models were designed by the revered Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. He is also responsible for his work on the Slovene National and University Library building, Ljubljanica river embankments, the open market, parks, cemeteries, and more architectural designs around Ljubljana.

Ljubljanica River | Ljubljanica

If you are in Prešeren Square then you can definitely see the Ljubljanica River and cross it via the Triple Bridge. There are also cafes along the embankment perfect for a summer day, boat tours that go up and down the river through the city, and you can even do a paddle-board tour!

ljubljana self guided tour

Town Square | Mestni Trg

How to spend a day in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Once you cross the Ljubljanica River over the Triple Bridge and keep going straight towards the castle you will find yourself in Town Square with the Robba Fountain ( Robbov vodnjak) in the middle. This is actually a replica of this fountain. The original can be found in the National Gallery. From here you can see the Ljubljana Cathedral and Town Hall.

This stretch of pedestrian-only street is called Mesti trg and if you walk south it becomes Stari trg and is full of small boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. One of my favorite coffee shop in Ljubljana, Cafetino, can be found here.

Pritlicje is a really nice cafe and art space that is one of the few places in the center to offer (American style) iced coffee. In Slovenia, it is standard to receive ice cream inside your iced coffee ( ledena kava ). Check the menu or ask your server before ordering

Also along this street in either direction, you can find a lot of shops that sell Slovenian made products. Perfect for unique souvenirs to take home.

If you head north, towards the cathedral you will find lots of restaurants and a few shops. Continue walking past the cathedral to where the street begins to allow cars you will see the Central Market on the left.

ljubljana self guided tour

Central Market |  Osrednja ljubljanska tržnica

Central Market is a collection of markets depending on the time of the year. There is an outdoor market where local farmers sell their fruits, vegetables, and cured meats. Sometimes you can find some other stands selling their non-food goods. Next to this market is a two-floored indoor market, designed by Jože Plečnik. You can find different restaurants, shops, a fish market, and art gallery here.

central market ljubljana

Also in this area, you can find more market stands under a colonnade. This is the perfect spot to find some Slovenian-made souvenirs from honey and lace to painted Slovenian beehive panels. To read more about the operating hours of these markets check out this page .

odprta kuhna

If you are visiting Ljubljana from March 24th (2019) every Friday you can find Odprta Kuhna (Open Kitchen) which is a very popular street food market. It runs from 10 am until 9 pm. It is the perfect place to try a range of Slovene dishes as well as lots of cuisines from around the world. I highly recommend you go if you have the chance. It can be very crowded when the weather is nice so plan accordingly because seating is limited.

Butcher’s Bridge |  Mesarski most

one day in Ljubljana

The locks on Post des Arts in Paris were removed but on the Butcher’s Bridge, this custom is still alive and well. In spite of its very unromantic name and disturbing statues, it is a “romantic” place for couples to fasten their love locks.

The statues at first glance are quite disturbing, and they really truly are. One of them is Adam and Eve being banished from the garden of Eden, another of a disemboweled Prometheus in punishment for teaching man about fire, and Satyr being startled by a serpent.

the butcher's bridge ljubljana

At this point you are back on the side of the Ljubljanica of Prešeren Square. From here you can walk along the riverbank viewing cafes, restaurants and shops. I recommend taking a right after the bridge and continue until the next one.

Dragon Bridge |  Zmajski most

dragon bridge ljubljana

The Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana is loved by many. With large dragons fixed upon the columns much like gargoyles. For the bridge fanatics out there, it is often regarded as one of the most beautifully done in  the Vienna Secession style and was the first concrete bridge in Slovenia.

Choose your own path…

From here you have two options. I used my amazing graphic artist and screenshot skills to illustrate them for you. The first one you can follow the pink arrows and go back towards where you began, but this time you will take a parallel street called Trubarjeva Cesta. This path will take you towards Congress Square and the museums near Tivoli Park. Details are below the image.

If you take the blue arrows also along Trubarjeva Cesta this will take you t owards the Metelkova and the Museum Quarter of Metelkova. Information about this route comes further down the article. I added the walking times as it is very easy to view a map and think something isn’t far but it adds up quickly.

walking guide ljubljana

Trubarjeva Cesta

Trubarjeva is one of my favorite streets to walk along. They recently redid the entire road with handlaid bricks and is perfect for window shopping, browsing local goods, and some delicious food options from around the world

Recommended stops:

  • Mladinska knjiga – has a great selection of books about Slovenia in English and sourviners
  • FLAT – has beautiful design pieces for home and every day life
  • Vinoteka Štorija – sells Slovenian wine

Recommended food:

  • Namaste – delicious and cheap Indian food with generous portions
  • Abi Falafel – a lunchtime favorite with the best falafel wrap in town
  • Skuhna – offers authentic food from Africa, Asia, and South America prepared by international chefs
  • Že V Redu Primož – sells craft beers from all over the world. I definitely suggest trying some Slovenian ones.
  • Raw Pasta Bar – a fantastic fresh pasta restaurant run by two Italians passionate about sharing good food.

Continue all the way until you hit a large square with trees. Now you are at Congress Square

Congress Square |  Kongresni Trg

kongresni trg ljubljana

Ljubljana was once the site of a Roman city named Emona. You can see part of the remaining walls in Congress Square near a statue of Emona. The square took many forms throughout history and was the location for several significant events in Slovenian history. Now it is the home of a green area called Zvezda Park (Star Park). The highlight of Congress Square is all of the beautiful buildings surrounding it and a stunning view of the Ljubljana Castle.

Walking away from the castle down Šubičeva Ulica you will soon arrive at the Natural History Museum and National Museum of Slovenia

Natural History Museum of Slovenia | Prirodoslovni muzej Slovenije

ljubljana self guided tour

The Natural History Museum contains various natural history exhibitions such as geological and paleontological collection, minerals, conches, insects, birds, botanicals, and more. A highlight you shouldn’t miss is an almost complete 20,000-year-old mammoth skeleton. This exhibit will not take you more than an hour and is best paired with the National Museum of Slovenia (below).

Cost: 3€ adults / €2.50 children, students, seniors Hours: Daily from 10:00-18:00, Thursdays from 10:00-20:00

National Museum of Slovenia | Narodni muzej Slovenije

The National Museum of Slovenia is housed in the same building as the Natural History Museum and is the oldest and largest museum in Slovenia. The exhibits are focused on early history with Egyptian, Roman, and Slovenian artifacts. The most impressive being the oldest Paleolithic flute known to date in the world, made by Neanderthals from 60,000 years ago.

Cost: €6 adults / €4 children, students, seniors Combined Ticket w/Natural History €8.50/€6 Combined Ticket w/Metelkova branch €8.50/€6 Hours: Daily from 10:00-18:00 (Thursdays until 20:00)

national gallery ljubljana

An incredibly impressive museum that covers over 1000 different artists and works from the 1200s to the present day. You can view much of the collection online on the museum’s website . A special highlight you shouldn’t miss is the Zoran A. Mušič collection, a Slovenian Modernist painter.

The collections in this museum focus on 20th-century modernism and contemporary works and its counterpart museum is the Museum of Contemporary Art near Metelkova. In the Museum of Modern Art you can find paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, and other forms of artist mediums.

Cost: €5 / €7.50 for a combined ticket Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 10:00-18:00

Tivoli Park and Ljubljana Zoo | Park Tivoli in Živalski vrt Ljubljana

Tivoli Park is the largest park in Ljubljana. You can probably spend an entire day here if you wanted to. There you can find Tivoli Castle (a mansion with a misleading name), the Cekin Mansion, a pond, playground, and a rose garden. The park is connected to a larger green space with hiking trails.

tivoli park ljubljana

On the southern part, atop of Rožnik Hill, you will find the Ljubljana Zoo . Don’t let the map mislead you, it is about a 35-minute walk (3km) from the parking lot at Tivoli. Because of the unique location of Ljubljana, a cross-section of various landscapes and climates, the zoo houses 119 species.

ljubljana self guided tour

Metelkova Mesto

If you took the route towards Metelkova there are three museums which you can find in this area. The Museum of Contemporary Art , the counterpart to the Museum of Modern Art, the Ethnographic Museum , and the National Museum of Slovenia -Metelkova which is the counterpart to the National Museum of Slovenia.

ljubljana self guided tour

Commonly known as just Metelkova, it is an alternative art and music space located in Ljubljana and a very popular stop for tourists. It is located in what was once the site for the military headquarters of the Army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and then for the Yugoslav National Army before being squatted by artists in 1993. It is now run independently by artists and creatives.

It is worth a visit during the day and also at night. During the day you can walk around viewing different art installations, art performances, and exhibitions. At night it transforms into several different night clubs and concert spaces. Check here for the latest events.

Food in Ljubljana

I would be doing a great disservice if I didn’t include some food recommendations. Food in Ljubljana has the most variety when it comes to choice. There are some excellent restaurants offering Slovenian food (traditional and modern), Italian, Indian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, and everything in between.

When I travel somewhere new, food is my favorite part of the experience. I want to try the long-time beloved dishes, the street food, and up and coming restaurants. After living in this foodie city for several years, here are my favorite places to eat!

Breakfast/Brunch

breakfast in Ljubljana

Le Petit Cafe |  Trg francoske revolucije 4 | Possibly my favorite breakfast and brunch spot in Ljubljana. If you have the chance to go during a warm day, sit outside, and do like the Europeans – take your time! The waitstaff is always very polite and attentive and everything I’ve eaten here is delicious.

Ek Bistro | Petkovškovo nabrežje 65 | Also a very photogenic and delicious spot to get your breakfast fix. A local favorite and located in the centre along the Ljubljanica River.

Lunch/Dinner

ljubljana self guided tour

Slovenska Hiša | Cankarjevo nabrežje 13 | With two locations, this one is right along the river and the perfect stop to try Slovenian meats and cheeses or for breakfast. The other location (Figovec: Gosposvetska cesta 1) offers their full menu packed with authentic Slovenian food.

Güjžina | Mestni trg 19 | Here you can try Prekmurska dishes, the far northeastern region of Slovenia. It is definitely more on the fancy date-night fashion, but the food is really well done and the perfect way to try another region of Slovenia that you might not have a chance to visit.

Pop’s Place | Cankarjevo nabrežje 3 | If amazing burgers and craft beer is your thing, I highly recommend you check out Pop’s Place. One of the best burgers around and endless choices for Slovenian craft beer that you might have to come back a few times.

ljubljana self guided tour

Sisters Kurtoš | Breg 4 | A relatively new place in Ljubljana but the only place where you can get the infamous chimney cake ( kürtőskalács ) and what is even better is that you can get ice cream in it!

Gelataria Romantika | Dvorni trg 1 | Something off the beaten path, here you can find unique flavors of gelato such as Salmon, Earl Gray, and vegan options. They also offer granita, Belgian waffles, coffee, and more.

Lolita | Cankarjevo nabrežje 1 | A local favorite and rightfully so. It is a very cute cafe that offers tasty stunning cakes with the perfect location. I recommend trying the Prekmurska Gibanica.

ljubljana self guided tour

Cafetino | Stari trg 5 | This was my first favorite coffee place in Ljubljana. I just love the vibe, location, and they have probably the most expansive coffee selection of anyone else.

Črno Zrno | Gornji trg 17 | A new favorite and a must-try. First, they have cold brew which is not that commonplace in Ljubljana. Second, the shop is super small and adorable. Finally, their coffee is just really really good.

Stow | Gosposka ulica 15 | This is a tricky one hidden inside of City Museum of Ljubljana, when you enter you will see a sign to go straight through the doors, across the room straight ahead and down the stairs. It is a beautiful place – incredibly inspiring, and it helps that they are very serious about making amazing coffee.

Tozd | Gallusovo nabrežje 27 | It would be a disservice not to share this local favorite. Perfectly located next to the river but also just enough away from the crowds this is the perfect place to meet a friend for a coffee or a beer. They also do a very strong cold brew which will get you ready for a day of sightseeing.

Burek Olimpija | Slovenska cesta 58 | There isn’t anything more local than this place. If you travel to Slovenia and you have never had a burek, you must, I repeat, you must try burek. At Burek Olimpjia you can get one of the best in all of Ljubljana. My personal favorite is the meat burek ( mesni burek ).

Food Tours and Tastings in Ljubljana

Ljubljanayum offers a food tour, a wine tour, and even a craft beer tour around Ljubljana. On their tours, you get a bit of history and more food than you can possibly eat. Read about a food tour I did with them in March!

Dobrote Dolenjske offers tastings of wine and products from the Dolenjska region of Slovenia. I tested out their degustation just for you and the results are very positive.

How To Get Around Ljubljana

ljubljana

When traveling in a new city, especially in a new country or continent I usually suggest not to drive. Ljubljana is no exception. Parking can be expensive, traffic can be hectic, and navigating the city is a challenge even for me and I live here. If you do have a car there are several parking garages or lots you can use to park for the day. I’ll just drop my two recommendations below:

Kongresni Trg – while it is one of the more expensive places to park, the location is the most ideal right in the center of Ljubljana. Up to 3 hours it cost €1.20/hour and over 3 hours €2.40/hour.

Tivoli – at first glance of a map this might seem far, but it is not. It is a quick 5-minute walk and the cost is much more generous as the first two hours are just €0.60 and €0.60/hour after that – and maxes out at €4.80 a day. So if you are spending the day in Ljubljana this is the far more economical choice.

Similar to many European cities, Ljubljana has a bike share program called Bicikelj . To use the bikes, which have docking stations all around the city , you must register online first. You will need to provide your name, date of birth, zip code, create a 4 digit code, and use either a credit card or direct debit.

Watch this video by Visit Ljubljana to show the process step-by-step.

To actually use the bikes, find a docking station, use key 4 to select language. Then press key 1 to enter your subscription code from the email, and enter your PIN that you created. Confirm the bike you will take and release it from the dock by pushing the button on the top of the dock. Easy! Don’t forget to return the bike within 24 hours or you will be charged €350.

URBAN TOURIST TRAIN

The urban tourist train is not exactly a train but it looks like one and drives around Ljubljana through all of the major sites. It starts around Town Hall and loops around the city. You can see the route on their website .

There is an audio guide available in 9 different languages. In the winter the cars are closed and heated and in the summer it is open.

Tickets can be purchased from the driver at the entry station, from the Tourist Information Center, or online. Adult tickets are €8.00. The entire ride lasts about one hour and 15 minutes to one hour and a half.

Save time and money with the Ljubljana Card

central market ljubljana slovenia

A lot of major cities around Europe offer their city cards that allow tourists to visit some sights at a discounted rate. Some places are worth it, and some places not so much, but it also depends on the individual and how much you will use it.

The Ljubljana Card packs in so much that I can confidently say that it is worth it. For starters, you get access to all of the museums in Ljubljana, including ones not discussed in this article, the Ljubljana Castle, and the zoo. You also receive a free guided tour, unlimited travel on city buses (included to and from the airport), 24/7 access to Ljubljana wifi, Ljubljana bikes, the funicular to the castle, a boat tour, and even a tour at the local brewery, Union.

I didn’t even list every single thing because you get so much. Buying your card online will provide you with a small discount. There are 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour cards available with discounted prices for children aged 6-14. If you are coming for a weekend and especially with a family you will save a lot of time and hassle with one of these cards. Especially because you won’t have to be pulling out your wallet all of the time or getting international fees on your debit card.

There are practically endless options for day trips from Ljubljana. You can spend one day in the Alps, another through a vineyard, and end your trip at the seaside.

Now that’s what I call comprehensive! Wow, this must have taken you a lot of time to compile! I can’t believe I still haven’t been there, but am looking forward to traveling to Lubljana once I’m back in Europe 🙂 Your guide will come in super handy, thank you!

Thank you so much! (: It is definitely a nice visit, less intense as other capital cities with a little bit of everything within reach.

Thanks for compiling such a thorough guide to Ljubljana! I am happy to hear that the Ljubljana Card is a good value. It seems I am all set once I book my vacation to Slovenia.

Yes!!! Europe is always a good time.

Whoa super detailed guide! Love it! I especially like the dragon statue on the bridge. I’m sure they sell those as souvenirs, right?

Thank you for taking the time to read it! I’m sure they do, they love to sell dragon themed items around Ljubljana.

Trekking across the stunning Julian Alps

LJUBLJANA · TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK · JULIAN ALPS · SEVEN TRIGLAV LAKES · LAKES BLED & BOHINJ

Experience Slovenia’s alpine wilderness on this hut-to-hut traverse of the Julian Alps from north to south, tackling some of the most spectacular hiking trails next to Slovenia’s highest peaks.

Discover the urban, rural, and mountain highlights of the country, from Ljubljana, one of the smallest capital cities in Europe, breathtaking views towards the highest summits of the Triglav National Park, to Slovenia’s biggest and most charming lakes – Bohinj and Bled.

Challenge yourself with some long ascents, gravel, and rocky trails surrounded by the many steep limestone walls with all your hiking equipment on your back. This trip is reserved for very fit hikers with previous mountaineering experience, who enjoy long hiking stages.

OPTIONAL EXTRA: Climb the summit of Mt. Triglav!

Hiking with impressive Triglav views in Slovenia

Day 1: Explore Ljubljana as a mountaineer

Welcome to beautiful Slovenia! Arrive in Ljubljana and start your hiking adventure by discovering one of the greenest European capitals .

Ljubljana has been the capital of Slovenia since 1918, yet its history goes way back to the ancient lake dwellers, but the current name, Ljubljana, comes from the Slavic name ‘Ljuba’, which means “ the beloved “. Note that even a keen hiker and mountaineer like yourself is not immune to its compactness and sheer attributes with elevated perspectives. So give in and visit the Neboticnik Skyscraper, the tallest building in Europe when built, to enjoy the city and mountain view from its rooftop terrace cafe . Once back down, walk over the Cobbler’s Bridge and head north along the Ljubljanica River under the shade of the willow trees, shrubs, and vines lining its riverbanks, where you’ll feel like you’re a world away from the city . Then take a hike up the castle hill and ascend the clock tower of the medieval Ljubljana Castle , with about 1000 years of history and yet another elevated view of Ljubljana and beyond.

Meet the locals and other travellers and enjoy a pleasant summer evening in one of the many riverside bars. A great way to start this mountaineering adventure!

Overnight: 3* hotel in Ljubljana

Day 2: Hike from Tamar Valley to Vrsic Pass

Morning transfer gets you to the start of the hike in Slovenia’s far north-western corner, the Planica Nordic ski centre. It’s a famous ski flying cradle , where two legends jumped over 100 and 200 metres for the first time in history. The valley extends further to the remote but well-visited alpine valley of Tamar, where you’ll enjoy a leisurely walk. Once pass the popular mountain hut, you’ll start a serious uphill hike over foothills to the base of the Mojstrovka Mountain . Cross its north-facing scree slopes and reach the Vrsic pass .

On this highest mountain road pass in the country , you’ll reach your accommodation for the night, where, after a hearty dinner, you can do a short sunset walk to admire the nearby peaks coloured in crimson by the last sun rays of the day.

Hiking: 11 km / elevation gain +1100 m, -400 m / approx. 6-7 hours Overnight: mountain hut in shared or private rooms 1/2, 1/4 or 1/6 and shared washroom

Day 3: Hiking underneath the Mount Prisojnik

On this day you’ll hike the southern slopes underneath Mt. Prisojnik . This majestic mountain’s name means ‘close to the sun’, moreover, its huge north wall is visible even from the town of Kranjska Gora.

In the morning you’ll have a nice view over the rocky face of the famous ‘ Pagan girl ’ and onto a huge natural window just below the summit of Prisojnik. For the most part of the day, you’ll hike on the Slovenian Mountain Trail – a long-distance trail connecting alpine Slovenia with the Pannonian Plains in the east, and the Adriatic coast in the south. On the first two-thirds of the way, the trail crosses the slopes without much elevation gain and you get to enjoy the nice views towards the Soca valley in the south. The last third is a bit more challenging with a couple of rope aids and scree sections which you have to cross in order to reach the next mountain hut located on Kriski podi, in the realm of the mountain ibex .

You can call it a day here, or explore the tiny high mountain lakes, the Kriska jezera lakes, a few minutes’ hike from the hut.

Hiking: 8 km / elevation +950 m, -600 m / approx. 5-6 hours Overnight: mountain hut in shared rooms 1/4, 1/6 or 1/10 and shared washroom

Day 4: In the Kingdom of Goldenhorn

On the third day of your traverse, you’ll hike in the vicinity of the highest summit of the Julian Alps and the top of Slovenia, the iconic Mount Triglav . The mighty three-headed peak is Slovenia’s national symbol, which every ‘true’ Slovenian should climb at least once in their life.

In the morning you’ll ascent the Bovski Gamsovec peak and if you are lucky enough, you might spot majestic alpine ibexes grazing and lay around on narrow ledges above high vertical drops there. No wonder this place is also referred to as the Kingdom of Goldenhorn , a legendary white chamois buck, that roamed the heights of Mount Triglav.

After reaching a comfortable saddle, your path follows a well preserved and comfortable WWI mule track until you start climbing again on a rocky and gravel trail winding around the sinkholes across Hribarice Plateau. Reach a mountain hut at a stunning location and treat yourself to an amazing sunset.

If you opt for climbing Mt. Triglav , you’ll do a morning side-trip to a peak with amazing views of the Triglav North wall and follow the rest of the trail to a hut below the summit.

Hiking: 12 km / elevation +1150 m, -1100 m / approx. 5-6 hours Overnight: mountain hut in a dormitory room and shared washroom

Optional Day: Climbing Mt. Triglav with a guide

For all who are interesting in climbing the highest mountain in the Julian Alps , this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Add one more day to your hike and tackle Mt. Triglav safely with a local IFMGA mountain guide .

You will meet your guide early in the morning at the hut. From there, a less-travelled route to the top will take you across the karst plateau and over an exposed via-ferrata section. Before you know it, you’ll be standing at the top of Slovenia . The views from the summit are simply breathtaking. After receiving the honour of reaching the summit for the first time, a traditional baptism with a rope, you’ll descend via a ridge-line route. Once you exit the technical part of the trail and reach easier terrain once again, you’ll navigate to the next mountain hut on your own.

Cross the high-alpine karst landscape which resembles the impact craters of the moon’s surface, catch a glimpse down the Seven Triglav Lakes valley and reach a mountain hut at a stunning sunset location.

Hiking: 12 km / elevation +870 m, -990 m / approx. 6-7 hours Overnight: mountain hut in a dormitory room and shared washroom

Day 5: Hike through the Seven Triglav Lakes Valley

Do a 30-minute morning hike to a stunning sunrise peak with amazing panoramic views and take in the serenity of the moment. Return back to the hut for breakfast and head in the direction of the Seven Triglav Lakes Valley .

This day can be as relaxing or as active as you would like it to be. Walk through the Seven Triglav Lakes valley, stop by the alpine lakes and observe the marmots play or climb some more and take a ridge-line route to get an aerial view of the lakes and ascent two summits with vistas across the Julian Alps and towards Lake Bohinj .

Even though the crystal clear waters of the high alpine lakes are extremely inviting, please resist the temptation. Swimming is strictly forbidden . Learn more about it in our FAQ below.

You’ll stay in the simplest, but also the cosiest and one of the most authentic mountain huts in Slovenia.

Hiking: 14 km / elevation +540 m, -950 m / approx. 6-7 hours (including side trips) Overnight: mountain hut in dormitory room and shared washroom

Day 6: Leave the Alps behind and reach Lake Bohinj

You’ll leave the high alpine terrain behind as you descend into the glacial valley of the largest permanent lake in the country , the Bohinj Lake.

The trail becomes more and more comfortable with each step as you descend past alpine meadows & farms . Reach the eastern shore of the wonderful Lake Bohinj, kick off your shoes and jump in for a well-deserved refreshing swim . Relax in this alpine paradise and reminisce about your hiking adventures of the previous days.

When you’ve recharged your batteries a little, catch one of the frequent buses leaving for Bled for a nice hot shower and a proper ‘restaurant dinner’.

Hiking: 11 km / elevation +80 m, -1200 m / approx. 4 hours Overnight: 3* hotel in Bled

Day 7: Sunrise hike at Lake Bled and departure

Make your departure day one of your favourite travel memories. As the magic is in the little moments, brave the early hour and hike at sunrise to the Ojstrica and Osojnica hills – the perfect photo spots above Lake Bled . With Bled being so popular, this is one of the rare moments when you can enjoy the place to yourself; unless some passionate photographers beat you to it. Have the privilege of a front-row view of nature’s finest spectacle – an explosion of colours over the lake , the cliff-top castle and the world’s favourite lone island with the Karavanke mountains in the backdrop. Even though many prefer the close view from Ojstrica, you might love the Osojnica view more for its remote feel and higher perspective.

By now, you’ve probably eyed enough gems to believe you’ll come back for more truly off the beaten path adventures in the future. Therefore, we’ll wish you farewell for now and look forward to having you back soon!

Activity Level 4-5 – VERY STRENUOUS

Expect to walk 6-8 hours per day, 13 km (8 miles), and up to 1200 m (4000 ft) of elevation gain on the hardest day. You need to be in excellent shape and have hiking and mountaineering experience to fully enjoy this tour . Keep in mind: if you are not used to rocky terrain, long ascents, narrow trails, and occasional exposure, your days can be very long.

What are the trails like?

The trails are very uneven, rocky, and narrow, moreover you will need to overcome a few steeper sections on the uphills as well as the downhills. Mostly you will hike above the treeline, exposed to the sun without any shelter along the way.

Our Julian Alps Traverse hiking tour can only be done when the mountain huts in the central Julian Alps are open. They usually open in the last week of June and remain open until late September . The first half of July and September generally see few fellow hikers. August is the peak month and the trails & huts are busy. The temperatures in September start decreasing, especially when the sun sets.

What is the weather usually like?

Weather can change a lot. On the highest peaks, it can snow even in summer (although it is not very common). If the weather is nice it can be very hot. Even above 30 deg C (90 deg F), which is a must for sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat (for shade)! If the weather is bad and windy you will need really warm clothes. Be prepared for temperatures as low as 0 deg C and 32 deg F. This does not mean you have to bring a thick down jacket and thermal pants, but just keep in mind that it can get cold and unpleasant. Check our  recommended packing list .

We also recommend having a thin (lightweight) layer to cover your arms, legs, and the back of your neck to prevent sunburns.

Of course, don’t forget your swimsuit and a small towel! Lakes and rivers in the valley are calling for a refreshing swim!

Essential read : our  Best time to hike in Slovenia  blog post.

You will spend 4 nights in typical Slovenian mountain huts and 2 nights in centrally located 3* hotels or family-run B&B’s:

Hotel example: Ljubljana: City Hotel*** Bled: Garni Hotel Berc***

What are the mountain huts like?

The huts in the Slovenian Alps are quite basic, but they offer everything a hiker needs: food, drinks, and accommodation. Most of the huts are accessible only by helicopter (no roads). Thus food supply is limited, so expect simple menus of mountain food like different stews (vegetable or with meat), pasta, and sausages. They also sell chocolate, soft drinks, water, beer etc. The usual breakfast would be eggs, ham, cheese, butter, jam…

Some of the huts have on this hiking tour have normal flush toilets, running (drinking) water, and sometimes even hot showers . Others depend on rainwater and have pit toilets. Read more about the mountain huts in Slovenia .

Expect to share a room, toilets, bathrooms, or washrooms. Rooms are from 4 to 12 beds. When available, we will book private rooms.

Domen Strle Slotrips trip designer & guide

Domen Strle, Slotrips trip designer and guide

As a kid, I was introduced to the beauty of mountaineering through mountain summer camps with my local alpine club, where I established my love and respect for nature. I have since become an active member of the club, an alpinist, a recreational mountain biker, a ski mountaineering enthusiast, and a certified hiking guide. This has enabled me to share my fondness for the mountains with others. These days, I spend an equal amount of time exploring not only rugged mountains but also local history & culture, and good food. Ultimately, I have blended my passion, knowledge, and skills into a profession that I love and enjoy.

Meet the team

“We asked Miha to help us maneuver the Slovenian Alps,

with minimal exposure to civilisation, and we could not have been happier with the choice. Miha solved all logistical concerns from maps with alternative routes to safety equipment (we were skeptical at first, but learned to appreciate it!) to daily phone calls on the weather forecast. One tip: As we found Slotrips on Google we continually stressed that we were in very good shape because we feared the route would be too easy. We got what we asked for! It turns out very good shape for an avid mountaineer is indeed very good shape – but ultimately it led to a highly rewarding experience in magnificent surroundings. We give the highest of recommendations to use Slotrips to plan any trip.”

More reviews

Who can do it? Anyone with an excellent fitness level, previous mountaineering experience, and love for long hiking days.

Do I need to have a guide? This tour is meant for experienced hikers. If this is you, you don’t need a guide. If you are intrigued by this but lack hiking experience we recommend getting a guide.

Are private guided experiences available? Sure! We have private guides available for entirely customizable experiences.

Do I need a helmet? We recommend having a helmet. There are just 2 relatively short sections where you’ll feel more comfortable with a helmet. We rent helmets, if you are not bringing your own.

Do I need hiking poles? If you often use them on your hiking trips, of course.

Is there a minimum or maximum group size?  There is no minimum or maximum group size, but note that bigger groups are typically slower, thus the timings might not apply to your group.

How is the optional extra climb to Mt. Triglav? Climbing Mt. Triglav is an optional addition to this hiking tour. The summit can be very crowded during summer, especially on weekends. The last 300 vertical metres (1.5 hours) of the ascent and descent is a Via-Ferrata. It is secured with steel hand lines and stemples, yet very exposed in some sections. Even though an experienced mountaineer may not even notice the exposure, the less experienced will definitely feel in need of guidance. The IFMGA licensed mountain guide will take care of your safety and provide all necessary equipment and professional guidance, which is essential when the weather is not perfect. The guide will meet you at the hut and part with you upon reaching the easier terrain again. After the summit climb, you are hiking on your own. Read our blog post for detailed info about the Triglav summit climb .

How do your self-guided tours work?

You will be surprised! We have done (and are still doing) a ton of work to make sure your independent active holidays in Slovenia (and across the borders) are flawless, fun, and hassle-free. With the implementation of modern technology and our extensive local knowledge, we believe we are on the right way of delivering exceptional hiking & biking experiences that you are able to enjoy at your own pace.  Read more about our “self-guided added value” .

What to bring for this walking tour?

Check our  recommended packing list . Additionally, we recommend having a helmet.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Not necessarily. The huts provide blankets and one-time-use paper sheets. However, we highly recommend bringing a lightweight cotton sleeping liner (travel sheet), because you’ll sleep better on it, avoid making unnecessary waste and help preserve some trees.

Is luggage transfer between the mountain huts possible?

No. You will need to carry your belongings throughout the entire hiking tour. Yet your main luggage will be stored at the hotel in which you’ll stay after the hiking tour.

Can I swim in the Triglav lakes?

No! The lakes are fairly small, especially during the summer drought. The water in and outflow is super small and the water barely changes. The lakes’ micro-ecosystem is very fragile and we must not endanger it with our sweat, sunscreen etc. Moreover, it is considered an  offence by the Triglav National Park organisation .

Do the mountain huts provide vegetarian/vegan meals?

Food in mountain huts is quite basic. There are options for vegans and vegetarians, but the selection is very limited. If you have any special dietary restrictions or needs, we recommend bringing your own snacks and treats.

Can I add more adventures?

Sure! Do you like rock climbing, rappeling down amazing waterfalls, horse-back riding across lovely meadows, kayaking on turquoise rivers, paragliding with stunning views of the Julian Alps, climb a via-ferrata to one of the jagged peaks in Triglav National Park? Let us know and we will deliver your adventures!
