Luxury travel agent . It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? If you’re someone who has a passion for travel and appreciates the finer things in life, you may be missing your calling. A luxury travel agent plans five-star — and often extravagant, downright epic — trips around the world.
We’re talking safaris , over-water villas in Bora Bora, the nicest suites in Paris — the works. It sounds glamorous, and it often is, as luxury travel planners frequently get to experience these high-end travel experiences for themselves. There’s also the draw of bigger commission checks, as compared to modestly priced trips ( how do travel agents get paid , anyway?). But there’s far more to being a luxury travel advisor than juicy payouts and sampling the goods. There are impossibly high-maintenance clients, unrealistic expectations and plenty of hoops to jump through. Think you’re cut out for it? We got you.
(Not quite ready to tackle luxury-seeking clients? Learn how to become a travel agent from square one, or, better yet, what is a travel agent? )
First, what counts as “luxury travel?”
When most think of luxury travel , elite properties like Rosewood or Four Seasons in gorgeous places like Monaco or the Maldives tend to come to mind. But there’s more to it than extravagant, amenity-filled hotels in coveted destinations.
You’ll be planning beyond-ordinary travel experiences (and it’s really fun)
Luxury travel planning tends to include more dimensions than an ordinary booking. Clients may have unorthodox requests, like reserving separate villas for a single couple. They might desire custom excursions, such as an off-the-rails safari through the Serengeti. They could show interest in unique destinations, like chartering a one-off cruise to Antarctica…you get the idea.
Many luxury travelers expect white-glove service
Luxury travelers often want attentive, uncompromising service and have a desire to enjoy extraordinary experiences far removed from everyday life. Some clients may expect their needs to be anticipated, rather than spoken. Itineraries may change on a whim. And frequent follow-ups are often a must (though this may vary by client).
Expectations are high, so knowing how to navigate these particulars is a necessary skill. Don’t assume this is a raw deal, though. Luxury travelers may have heightened expectations, but they’re also willing to pay top dollar for those experiences, which means greater commission.
Plus, luxury travelers are often looking for extensive itinerary planning (which is billable), and other commissionable services, too, like organizing transportation and special experiences.
Even so, commissions for smaller-scale luxury trips are nothing to balk at. This is, after all, why many in the industry aspire to become a luxury travel agents.
How to become a luxury travel advisor, step by step
If you’re a travel planner who’s interested in leveling up into the luxury market, read on for our tips on how to become a luxury travel agent. Or, if you're ready to dive in today, sign up to become a Fora Advisor .
Start with the basics of travel planning
If you haven’t booked travel before, you may not want to start with elite hotels, resort buyouts and organizing luxe itineraries. Instead, it may be helpful to start with ordinary bookings and trips, and then work your way up. This way, you can build your confidence and experience in a lower-stakes setting so that you’ll be well prepared for luxury travel planning in due time.
And if it’s all new, Fora can teach you everything about becoming an independent travel agent . We offer comprehensive travel agent training on everything from the basics to hyper-niche destination planning — plus endless support.
Become a luxury connoisseur
Luxury travel is one of the most exclusive subsets of an already exclusive industry. Five-star hotels and high-end suppliers (like tour companies) cater to the one-percent, which means most of us will never experience travel at the crème de la crème level.
But in order to become a luxury travel agent, you must be acquainted with the product. No, you don’t have to fork over thousands of dollars to stay at luxury hotels in order to compare them. However, you should make an effort to learn about the luxury travel industry by doing research, leveraging your fellow advisors’ expertise and poking your head into five-star hotels when you can.
Developing your eye for luxury is an important step in earning your chops as a travel connoisseur, so you can consult with your clients as they decide between the best of the best.
Develop your high-touch service skills
Knowing about luxury travel is one thing, but booking it is a whole different beast. Because clients are paying five-star prices, they are expecting five-star service — and that white-glove customer experience begins and ends with you.
As a high-end concierge or personal assistant would, luxury travel agents do their due diligence in getting to know their clients and catering to their unique needs and travel preferences. When advising on a destination or specific hotel, demonstrate your thorough research, paint an enticing picture and be sure to highlight specific details in line with their tastes.
… including razor-sharp attention to detail
The devil is in the details when it comes to being a luxury travel agent. In addition to providing a highly personalized service experience, it’s crucial to ensure accuracy when dealing with reservations, transportation and other logistics.
When working with hotels, be sure to communicate early and often to ensure your clients are treated like VIPs. For luxury travelers, little details like a personalized welcome gift go a long way. (By the way, we have access to perks at the world’s top high-end properties that you can offer your clients). But missing a little detail — like an early hotel check-in — will not be treated lightly.
Rely on your fellow advisors (and choose your agency wisely!)
Unless you’re an experienced globetrotter, you can’t know everything when it comes to luxury travel.
If a client is looking to you for advice on a destination you know little about, leverage your fellow travel agents. At Fora, our team of experienced industry insiders (many of whom are luxury travel advisors in their own right) knows the ins and outs of luxury travel planning worldwide, so you’ll never be taking a shot in the dark.
For context: if you work at a boutique travel agency, you may have fewer resources. Alternatively, agents at a larger, high-end travel agency often gate-keep information (new agents are often viewed as competition), making it tricky to plan trips you’re unfamiliar with. Learning how to become a luxury travel advisor is as much about making connections as it is planning travel.
Market yourself, but remember: referrals are your best friend
You’ve studied up on luxury, refined your sales skills and done your research — now what?
First, market yourself as a luxury travel agent . At Fora, we offer content marketing tools and resources to help you look super professional and curate your expertise to skew luxury. But becoming a luxury travel agent largely relies on your first luxury client.
To get your first client, leverage your personal network. Do you know anyone planning a honeymoon? This is often the first (and only!) luxury vacation people take, so consider offering to plan a friend’s. And when all goes well, request they share your name with their network, and so on.
Identify a niche (at least to start)
Specializing in something specific can be a good way to get your foot in the door as a travel advisor.
You could focus on booking luxury cruises, for example, then slowly branch out as your clients’ needs inevitably change. Not many people only go on cruises, right? Your clients’ subsequent vacations can serve as opportunities to expand your services.

Set yourself up for success with a host agency that takes care of the nitty gritty
Ready to get started becoming a luxury travel agent? You’ll need a host agency that gets it.

You’ll get access to our technology (like our integrated booking platform ) and community of luxury travel experts. Plus, we handle all the logistics, like chasing commissions, invoicing hotels and getting you your payments, so you can focus on what you know and love: planning trips.
We have a community-based learning model at Fora. You'll learn how to become a luxury travel agent online alongside fellow advisors and we'll support you through your first booking to the 1,000th and beyond.

How a woman who's visited over 50 countries built a luxury travel business from scratch
In 2009, Jennifer Dombrowski moved to Italy.
She had been living and working in Arizona when her husband got transferred through his military job to a small town in Northern Italy. She asked her employer if she could continue her work as a social media strategist for a university for a six-month trial period from her new home near Venice.
"That six-month trial period turned into six years," she told Business Insider.
Today, Dombrowski , 36, and Tim Davis, 35, are living in Bordeaux, France, building their own luxury travel business, Luxe Adventure Traveler . They've visited more than 50 countries on four continents.
Below, Dombrowski told Business Insider how she came to start her own business, what it's like living and working thousands of miles from home, and what everyone gets wrong about luxury travel.
Dombrowski launched a hobby blog to keep friends and family in the loop almost immediately after arriving in Italy.
Sunset floating in the pinks and golds of the Dead Sea! A few tips for floating in the Dead Sea: 1. The water is greasy from the high salinity, so bring an old swimsuit you don't mind tossing out after floating. 2. Bring water shoes so you don't cut up your feet on the crystallized salt. 3. Don't shave right before going in. A photo posted by Luxe Adventure Traveler (@luxeadventuretrvlr) on Aug 20, 2015 at 12:25pm PDT Aug 20, 2015 at 12:25pm PDT

"The first weekend we had free, we were like, 'What are we going to do? Hey, let's go travel — Slovenia is an hour away, and Croatia another hour. We visited three countries in one weekend, so let’s start blogging about it," she said.

With Dombrowski keeping her US-based job with regular hours, and Davis holding a military job, they weren't able to indulge every travel whim. Instead, they sat down with their calendars and highlighted the limited times they could take off and travel together.

Davis's schedule was more restrictive, thanks to scheduled military exercises and missions. But Dombrowski had seven weeks of vacation working for a university, and she was determined to maximize every minute.

Instead of spending quiet weekends or breaks at home, "we would make sure we always planned to have something going on during those times," she said. "Having the weekend and being in Europe, you could go so many places just driving or taking a cheap budget flight."

But just because they could travel on a shoestring budget doesn't mean they always did. If you're looking for a place to learn more about "how to travel on $50 a day or less," they write on their site, "Luxe Adventure Traveler isn't it."

But luxury "absolutely doesn't have to be terribly expensive," Dombrowski said. "There's the champagne and caviar dreams version of luxury, but then there's just being able to go and enjoy a glass of wine here in Bordeaux. Being able to go out and enjoy that and treat yourself at the end of the day can also be luxury."
It's #NationalMacaronDay! Macarons are one of my favorite things and there is a fabulous macaron shop just a few doors down from my new apartment in Bordeaux. It's a good thing I don't have an elevator and will primarily be getting around on foot, so I can work off all the extra calories I'm sure to consume over the next year. 😋 A photo posted by Luxe Adventure Traveler (@luxeadventuretrvlr) on May 31, 2016 at 11:23am PDT May 31, 2016 at 11:23am PDT

After six years of running their blog on the side, Dombrowski decided to quit her job and focus on building it full-time, with the idea that she and her husband will run it together when his stint with the military ends three years from now.

"It's been hard to find the perfect balance, because the exciting part for readers is that you're on the road, but we're not nomadic like a lot of travel bloggers," she said. "We used to travel to about 20 countries a year, and now we're going to half or less than half of that. It's about finding the things that interest us and that our readers are interested in."

Living in Bordeaux, where they moved earlier this year, makes mixing work and travel easy. "I can work all day preparing for projects," Dombrowski said. "But after I'm done or if I need a break I can go out in this beautiful city — go climb the tower and get a cool view, or go to a great museum, or hop on the train and go to a tasting at a wine shop."
It's a heatwave again! I'm staying cool with 🍦. Violet is one of my favorite French flavors. Which is funny since I'm not usually a fan of edible flowers because, well, flowers taste exactly how you think they will. Like you licked your yard. But the violet is very sweet and it's even common to find them candied. Yum! A photo posted by Luxe Adventure Traveler (@luxeadventuretrvlr) on Aug 23, 2016 at 12:06pm PDT Aug 23, 2016 at 12:06pm PDT
Aside from the blog, Luxe Adventure Traveler now offers consulting and helps clients with travel-related projects. For instance, Dombrowski is currently preparing for a food and wine Instagram takeover for the French tourism bureau.

A few rain drops and moody skies couldn't keep me from exploring the jaw-dropping wine chateaux of the Medoc. Sadly, the French inheritance tax is so high that many of the estates just could not be kept in the families. This one is Chateau Pichon Longueville and it was bought by the insurance company AXA. "We've learned to slow down," Dombrowski said. "We used to pack everything we possibly could into a vacation, because like most people we were going for a week at a time, so we wanted to see as much as we could. But it's really nice to plan a day to enjoy the pool or book a spa appointment or be lazy, because you are on vacation and how often do you get to do that at home?"

More than 50 countries later, Dombrowski shared some practical advice for travelers: "Always, especially when you're planning an international trip, ensure that you've got all your ducks in order. If the country you're visiting says you need four consecutive empty pages in your passport, makes sure you do. We've had friends that have been denied entry for things like that." She recommends travel.state.gov to find out what you need.
Burano is among the top 10 most colorful cities in the world and the locals are proud of that distinction. And, she added, "when you're deciding to go on a trip, it's probably a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Even if you take a trip once every year, that's a place you're going to go and not come back to. So if it means not going to Starbucks for your morning coffee for a few months to save for that one item you really want to splurge on while you're there, that's what you do."

Despite switching to dynamic pricing and making it more difficult to know how many points are needed to redeem for a stay, Hilton Honors has many of the world’s well-known hospitality brands under its portfolio. Among them are some of the best hotel chains for business travel.
Using hard-earned points for a vacation award redemption means waived resort fees, too. When paired with one of the fastest ways to Diamond elite status (the hotel's top level) via the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card , you have a strong contender for best hotel rewards program for business travelers who want to spend their points on a personal vacation later.
Hilton Hotels & Resorts
As the flagship brand for Hilton, the Hilton brand spans the globe in both city and resort destinations. Many of its properties have meeting facilities, as well as executive lounges that are popular with elite members. Gold and Diamond members can enjoy complimentary breakfast if a club lounge isn't available — perhaps another draw for business visitors.

Embassy Suites by Hilton
You can't go wrong with a free, made-to-order breakfast, evening happy hour with free wine, beer and cocktails plus snacks, and every accommodation offers a two-room suite. While families will be happy here, this is also a great option for business travelers (especially those traveling on their own dime). You'll have everything you need in one place — even if you're just working remotely in your suite .
Homewood Suites by Hilton
With more than 500 properties open, these all-suite accommodations come with full kitchens and separate living areas. They're intended for extended stays, making them a good fit for business travelers who want to be self-sufficient. Even better, rooms come with complimentary breakfast and an evening social hour several nights a week with free wine, beer and snacks.

Marriott Bonvoy
With so many hotel brands in its portfolio, Marriott seemingly has one for nearly every type of traveler — from luxury-minded to budget-focused, including many built for the corporate traveler. Of course, Marriott Bonvoy’s strength as a hotel loyalty program is another major driver of business, especially with its elite member benefits guarantee and ability to earn bonus points and elite status via Marriott-affiliated credit cards . While there are a lot of Marriott Bonvoy brands that delight those who travel for work, these are the business travel hotel brands with some of the most ideal options.
Marriott Hotels
The company’s flagship brand, Marriott, comes in all shapes and sizes, from conference-oriented properties to resorts. What most have in common are several key features: Club lounges (ideal for elite status travelers or those wishing to pay for an upgrade), a TED Talks partnership that supplies unique content via in-room TVs and the Marriott Bonvoy app , and Greatroom lobby lounges (perfect for relaxing after a day of meetings).
Following a redesign announcement, Sheraton wants to become a destination for groups to gather and business travelers to be productive. In addition to club lounges that will appeal to elite status members, its public areas will feature private, soundproof studio workspaces and “productivity tables,” encouraging guests to enjoy complimentary refreshments as they work or cowork. The lobby lounge will serve craft coffee beverages in the morning and transition to a cocktail menu later in the day.

Gaylord Hotels
This is one of Marriott’s smallest brands as it has five properties only, but the hotels are enormous. That’s because these properties are designed for meetings and events. From corporate gatherings to gigantic conventions, business and social interaction is the heart of the Gaylord brand. Cleverly, Gaylord properties incorporate leisure facilities, like entertainment programming and water parks, so that business travelers can bring the family along.
Residence Inn
Longer-stay guests can maximize productivity thanks to larger accommodations at Marriott's Residence Inn, many of which have separate living and sleeping areas, plus kitchenettes. Complimentary breakfast, and many nights of the week, free dinner with wine and beer, are among the perks that business travelers appreciate most when on the road.
You only earn 5 points per $1 spent at Residence Inns (as well as Towneplace Suites). The usual Marriott base rate is 10 points per $1. Factor this into your decision as a trade-off if you choose to stay there for the long-term amenities.
World of Hyatt
As one of the more generous loyalty programs out there, World of Hyatt offers numerous benefits, especially for elite members and for those with the World of Hyatt Credit Card . This has helped propel it in the ranks of best hotel chains for business travel. Benefits like Guest of Honor , that allow elite members to share their status with another traveler, and a reciprocal partnership with American Airlines to earn miles and points , add to the program’s popularity.
Using the points you earned on the clock for a resort award redemption means waived resort fees, too. World of Hyatt keeps life on the road healthy and well-balanced; for instance, the curated mindfulness content from Headspace available in guest rooms and via the World of Hyatt app can help business travelers looking to stay grounded.
Hyatt Regency
These business-focused hotels have full-service facilities like a restaurant, bar and meeting space. Many also have a Regency Club lounge accessible to top elite members or those willing to pay an upgrade for access.
Grand Hyatt
Designed to be large, opulent and focused on meetings and events travel, Grand Hyatt properties around the world cater well to the frequent business traveler. Amenities like a lounge for elite status members and those wishing to pay for the upgrade, a premium fitness center and restaurant mean road warriors are well cared for during a stay.
Hyatt House
These select-service, extended-stay hotels are designed for the price-sensitive traveler who wants more suite amenities than a traditional hotel room. Hyatt House properties come with apartment-style kitchen suites and workout facilities. For those with long stays in one place, it’s usually more economical (and less hassle) to stay in a hotel over signing a short-term lease for an apartment. And it’s always better to earn loyalty points, too.

If you're choosing between business travel hotels
Hotel companies have numerous brands targeting different audiences, from budget-friendly options to luxury properties designed to pamper. The business traveler can find some form of benefits at almost all hotels, but some brands within the major programs are especially notable. The next time you travel for work, look for these hotel brands that deliver a reliable, road warrior-friendly experience.
