The Orford Express tourist train

The Orford Express was launched in 2006, and after the first season, when almost every ride was fully booked, this attraction became one of the most interesting in the Eastern Townships .

The train that links Sherbrooke , Magog and Eastman, is not designed for transportation of goods. In fact, this one of the loveliest tourist trains in Canada. It offers two diesel-powered dining railcars with seating for up to 140. Its passengers enjoy a first-class meal while taking in the beauty and richness of the countryside.

The interiors have a luxurious retro look with leather seats, polished maple woodwork and royal blue velvet drapes trimmed with gold.

Table d’hôte dinners, brunch or light meals are served on board on English china. The ticket agents and waiters are decked out in traditional porters’ caps and uniforms with brass buttons. The Orford express provides a leisurely, sightseeing jaunt of the region and tourists can order a glass of Chardonnay and gaze at passing delights, such as Mont Orford, Lake Memphremagog, Magog river, Lac des Nations or Mont Brome.

Audio-visual communications system with 72 high-definition screens are also offered in English.

Let’s remind you than train travel in deluxe surroundings has the charm of a bygone era. The passengers experience the ambience of olden days mix2ed with the latest technology - plasma television screens will show the conductor at work as well as close-ups of local sights as we ride by.

The Orford Express departs from Sherbrooke , Magog and Bromont. One-way and return trips are available.

To contact the Orford Express team, call: 1-888-847-2844 or 819-847-2844.

What To Do in Magog, Quebec

Magog is a little town in Quebec's Eastern Townships. This region of French Canada with the very English sounding name is sandwiched between the Saint Lawrence River's southern shore and northeastern U.S.

Once a haven for United Empire Loyalists, today the largely Francophone Eastern Townships has a population of about 330,000 people and is a swanky getaway for Montrealers and New Englanders due to its quaint heritage buildings, lakes and ski resorts.

Magog has a long history as a hub for textile production, but this industry dried up with the influx of imports. In the late 20th century, the deprived town began to attract artists who moved in and breathed new life into the community, which currently thrives mainly as a tourist destination. If you want to discover a new side of Quebec, or experience a more laid-back destination with something to offer most travellers, here are a few must-dos in the area.

"Do" Mont Orford

If you're looking to get a little soft adventure under your belt while in Magog, Mont Orford is a perfect getaway 10 kilometres outside the city.

At once a mountain, ski resort and national park, Mont Orford affords some of the most beautiful views of the Eastern Townships. It's no wonder back in the mid-2000's, developers were licking their chops at the idea of turning the area into an unabashed tourist pit with no thought for the environment. Instead, Mont Orford is managed by the Quebec government and remains an understated and protected park.

In winter, Mont Orford is a popular ski destination. The hill boasts three peaks and the steepest vertical in the Eastern Townships. In more seasonal weather, activities include camping, hiking, paddling and rock climbing. During the fall, when the leaves are changing colour, take in some epic views from the Mont Orford gondola.

Eat, and then Eat Some More

Colonists from France brought their traditions of fine food and drink with them when they arrived in Canada in the early 1600s and today, some of the finest foodie destinations are in Quebec, including in the stylish and cultural town of Magog.

Be sure to visit a restaurant featuring authentic local food, which is a satisfying blend of French culinary elegance and heartier working class fare, like stews and meat pies, using the abundant local ingredients.

Visit Musée International d'Art Naif (International Museum of Naive Art)

This is the only museum in Canada devoted to displaying and interpreting naive art. Many of the artists represented are from Quebec but painters and sculptors from all over the world are displayed, giving a global picture of this engaging art form.

Naive art is unfettered by traditional art conventions and rules. It is simple, usually colourful and may be described as childlike in its rendering.

Whether you're a fan of this style of art or not, the good news is the Musée International d'Art Naif is free to visit. A tour of the exhibits - both permanent and rotating - should take less than an hour.

Pamper Yourself at a Spa

Spa Nordic Station

In a region known for its well-heeled regulars, it's no wonder that spas and luxury treatments are in good supply.  Magog has several spas, including its most celebrated, Spa Nordic Station , which offers visitors the pain / pleasure style of aquatic relaxation known as cold plunging. Icy water dips are quickly followed up by your choice of a dunk into warmer waters, a steam or sauna.  The effects are therapeutic and calming. These "thermal stations" are located within a tranquil wooded area aside a running river.

Marais de la Riviere aux Cerises

La Flambee des Couleurs

Just steps away from downtown Magog is an area of woods, marsh and bog that comprise an impressive biodiverse network of paths called the Marais de la Riviere aux Cerises .

Wooden footbridges, boardwalks and forest trails wind through a variety of terrain, each offering its own special natural beauty. This is a birders haven!

Though each season blooms in a unique way, fall is an especially scenic time to visit. Be advised there is not much shade so prepare yourself with a hat, sunscreen or an umbrella when you visit on sunny days.

Parking is free every day on either end of the trail as is the small but informative interpretive center and gift shop.

The trail is about 3-kilometres and can be accessed from either end or done in conjunction with part of the Trail Verte which makes for a longer, 5.5-kilometre walk.

Another option is to bring your kayak or rent one from nearby Vie de Plein.

What better way to get to know the locals than through their wines, right at the source. Several wineries in and around Magog welcome visitors in French and English for wine tasting and tours of the vineyards and production facilities.

As long as you're not expecting Sonoma or even Niagara-on-the-Lake , Magog wineries are a pleasant and scenic way to get to know the people and a bit of the region's history, plus taste some decent wine while you're at it. The terroir is still relatively young, but the people are friendly and informed and the backdrop sublime.

Try  Cep d'Argent , which specializes in sparkling wines, or Vignoble d'Orford, both in scenic locales along the  Route des Vins de l’Estrie ( Brome-Missisquoi  Wine Route ).

Head to Lake Memphremagog

Magog sits at the northern end of Lake Memphremagog, a long and narrow fresh water glacial lake that spans both the U.S. state of Vermont and Canadian province of Quebec.

Considered a jewel of the Eastern Townships, Lake Memphremagog began as a mere canoe route through the region but by the 19th century was an esteemed vacation destination. Many resorts and cottage rentals line its shores.

Start your visit at Parc de la Baie-de-Magog, which has paths, beaches and of course, water. Swimming in the lake is possible when the water is warm enough, usually by mid-June.

Consider hiring a boat tour to explore the lake and surrounding area, while learning about its rich history.

The Quebec lake even has its own fabled sea monster: the Creature of Lake Memphremagog, Memphré, who reportedly looks like an alligator or a sea horse. This aquatic serpent has been sighted by hundreds of people with the first record of its existence dating back to 1816.

Most Beautiful Places in Magog, Quebec (Travel Guide)

The pearl of the Eastern Townships in Quebec, Canada is Magog. It is a beautiful small town located near pristine rivers, lakes, and mountains with tons of spots and activities for tourism. It is an underrated place in Quebec and often overlooked by international travelers.

I am from Montreal and personally love having a place like Magog for day trips or long weekend mini-vacations. There are so many beautiful spots perfect for photography in Magog and because there is so little information out there, I decided to make a small article to show you why you need to add Magog to your bucket list.

These are the most beautiful spots in Magog, Quebec:

Mont-Orford National Park

Mont-Orford National Park

Mont Orford National Park is the spot in Magog. It is maintained and protected by the Quebec Provincial Government. If you visit Mont-Orford, get ready to hike as the park is mostly known for its amazing picturesque trails.

In my opinion, the best time to visit Mont-Orford is in the fall when the leaves turn into a beautiful canvas of oranges and yellows. There are also many wild animals that can potentially be spotted in the park, most notably, the white-tailed deer, virginia deer, and the great blue heron.

Here are some of the most picturesque trails in the Mont-Orford National Park:

Mont Chauve Trail : A moderate trail that takes you to the top of a mountain in Mont-Orford National Park. From the top, you’ll have a wonderful view of Mont-Orford as well as an epic river passing through the park.

Pic de l’Ours Trail : Another trail that takes you to a mountain top, this one has amazing 360 degree views of the surrounding valleys. It is considered a hard trail so come ready for a good workout.

Mont-Orford Trail : Of course, if you want to do the classic trail, try climbing to the top of Mont Orford. It is a difficult trail but totally rewarding with amazing views of the surrounding region as well as a small waterfall on the trail!

Pekan Trail : This is a great trail for someone not looking to hike a mountaintop but still get views of Mont-Orford. The hike takes place around a beautiful lake in the park and there are some climbs to get a better view of the lake with the magical backdrops of mountains.

Other cool spots in the park include the really cool camping spots. Stay there for the night and see a blanket of stars overhead, perfect for some beautiful milky way shots. Additionally, there are some beaches for swimming, which means you’ll be able to relax in the sand after a hard day of hiking.

Lake Memphremagog

Lake Memphremagog

Another very nice spot in Magog is the Lake Memphremagog. It is a large fresh water glacial lake located between Vermont and Quebec. The surface of the lake spans over 100km2! It is an absolute beast of a lake and is surrounded by nothing but beautiful lakeside towns and mountainous Eastern landscapes.

From Magog, you’ll be able to see Mont-Orford from the lakeside which is a stunning view and worthy of a click. There is also a marina in Magog with a beautiful boardwalk to admire some of the sights the lake offers. You can also catch some photographs of the town by the lakeside in the evening for some very romantic pictures.

If you can, try booking a cruise or renting a boat to spend a full day on the lake admiring some of the sights and getting some unique pictures of the region.

Just be careful when you visit the lake, legend has it that a lake monster called Memphre calls this place home!

Marais de la Rivière aux Cerises Park

A marais is what you would call a swamp in English. It is a park near downtown Magog offering 6 km trails all year round through swamps, rivers, and forests.

I would highly recommend visiting this spot if you are passing through Magog as it is easily accessible and very beautiful. There is one trail that takes you across the swamp on a wooden stilt bridge and a nice observation tower to spot wild animals roaming about.

The wildlife here is abundant. There are over 165 species of birds and hundreds of reptiles that call these swamps and forests home.

During the winter, you should really consider spending some time here as well. There is 1.8km of snowshoeing trails that will take you through winter wonderland, as well as landscapes and sceneries that will take your breath away and get you some cool clicks.

Here are some of the most picturesque trails in the Marais de la Rivière aux Cerises Park:

Pioneer Trail : This one is a very picturesque 4km out & back trail. It crosses a river on a wooden bridge with a mountain in the background. It is a super underrated trail and is absolutely worth it.

Lievre Trail : This trail is also a pretty good trail. It features a wooden boardwalk to walk over the marsh and has a gorgeous mountain as a background landscape. It also offers some pretty nice wildlife viewing opportunities in the early morning or late evening.

Path of Etangs Trail : This is another cool trail that takes you through the forest swamps. It is only 1.1km and a cool trail to supplement your day in the park.

Gros Pin Trail : Very similar to the other trails, it uses some of the same paths and does a circle around the marsh as well as round a lake. It has a gorgeous mountain as a backdrop and is only 1km.

Bleu Lavande Estate

Blue Lavande Estate

Known for it’s Lavender Fields, Bleu Lavande Estate offers many trails to discover its gorgeous flowers and so many photo opportunities, especially for a photoshoot!

There are both indoor and outdoor spaces that will scintillate your senses. Additionally, there are some really cool immersive experiences designed by Moment Factory. This makes it a nice spot to visit both for the photography and the activities!

There are three main types of lavenders here, the Munstead English Lavender, which usually blooms mid-July , the Afghan Lavender which usually blooms in August and the Lavandin which blooms in early September . I really recommend visiting the estates during one of those periods to maximize your fun.

The Bleu Lavande estate is perfectly placed in the heart of the Eastern Townships and overlooks the Applegrove Hill in the village of Fitch Bay. Not only are the flowers beautiful, but the background to the flowers is striking making your photography layered and interesting.

Bleu Lavande Estate is open year round (although it is recommended to go in season of course).

Estrie Wine Route

Estrie Wine Route

Of course, no visit to Magog is complete without at least stopping on the Estrie Wine Route, a scrumptious array of Quebec wineries located on hills, lake, and rivers. Not only will your surroundings be world-class but so will the wine!

I recommend renting a bike and hitting the six wineries on the route to spend a fun and delicious day in the Eastern Townships. Gaze at the fields surrounded by hills and rivers and stop for wine and grub at some of the most interesting eateries outside of Montreal.

Some of the most visually appealing wineries are:

Clos Saragnat

Domaine des Côtes d'Ardoise

La Belle Alliance, vignoble

Val Caudalies, vignoble et cidrerie

Hopefully, you’ll be able to use some of the tips here on your first or next visit to Magog, Quebec. There are so many beautiful little spots in Magog that are worth a detour and are often overlooked. Grab your camera and you’ll be sure to get some unique photographs of this world-class gem.

Magog is a town of 25,000 people (2011) in Quebec at the northern end of Lake Memphremagog.

Understand [ edit ]

magog train tour

Magog flourished in the 19th century thanks to the construction of flour, saw and card mills by Ralph Merry III, the founder of Magog. Arriving in the region around 1797, he constructed the first dam on the north side of the river, between an island and a stream, where the railway now lies.

The town’s original name was “Outlet”, as it is located where the lake drains. For the same reason, the parish of Saint-Patrice-de-Magog, founded in 1861, carried the name Saint-Patrice-d’Outlet at the time. Outlet was the official name for many decades, although Magog started appearing on official documents in 1783.

In 1850, Outlet became Magog, which was incorporated on January 28, 1888 as a village, and in 1890 as a town.

Magog became a city in autumn 2002 when it merged with Magog Township, which covers a large area divided into three districts by two shores of Lake Memphremagog and the Town of Omerville, formerly a parish attached to Magog. In a historical context, this merger appealed to a strong sense of mutual ownership based on over 200 years of sharing and developing a common land.

Best Places to See Canada's Fall Foliage

Nothing can match the fiery beauty of Canada's fall foliage. Warm, golden rays of sunshine shimmer on mirror-like lakes and slant through canopies of auburn, ochre and crimson leaves. The skies are bright and blue, the air is crisp and the sunsets are achingly beautiful.

Whether you're traveling through the aspen alpine meadows of the Rockies, the dense forests of Quebec's interior or the craggy coastline of Nova Scotia, Canada will enchant you in the autumn months. When you take a train ride, fall foliage surrounds you, putting you in just the right frame of mind for an outdoor adventure followed by a relaxing evening in front of the fireplace.

1. Rocky Mountains

As the needles of the larch trees turn a stunning shade of burnished brash, the alpine meadows of the Albertan Rockies come alive with colour. Gaze through the train windows at the pine-covered mountainsides, where you can see a dramatic contrast between the dark green conifers and the golden poplar and birch.

Best time for fall colours : Late September to early October

Recommended activities and tours : Ride the Banff Gondola to get a bird’s eye view of the golden larch trees in fall.

2. Niagara Region

History buffs may know the famous Winston Churchill quote calling the Niagara River Parkway the “the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world.” That is especially true in the fall of the year, when the trees in the Niagara region begin their seasonal transformation. Stunning shades of crimson, orange and gold can be seen when leaves are at peak colour. The area is also home to several wineries and orchards, making it an ideal fall getaway.

Best time for fall colours : Peak colour can happen between late September and late October.

Recommended activities and tours : Enjoy a personalized immersive experience on a private tour of the Niagara region.

3. Algonquin Park

If your Canada train journey begins or ends in Toronto, consider adding on a day trip to gorgeous nearby Algonquin Park. You can wander through dense colourful forests and view thousands of lakes and rivers, some of which can only be explored by canoe or on foot. This is also an ideal time of year for camping, as campgrounds are less crowded and you won't be bothered by bugs.

Best time for fall colours : Peak colour can happen between late September and late October.

Recommended activities and tours : Speak to your travel advisor about arranging a private tour to the park.

Best time to see fall colours in canada.

For the best fall foliage train rides , plan to take your excursion in late September or early October. This is when the red birch and maple trees are their most vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange. If you visit during late September or early October, you'll get to enjoy the contrast between the red, orange and yellow leaves and the green needles of Canada's evergreen trees.

Between late September and early October is also an ideal time to take a train tour through Canada if you'd like to avoid summer crowds and enjoy milder weather. By this time of year, summer heat waves have been replaced by mild daytime temperatures and cool nights, making early fall an ideal time to try out new hiking trails, visit one of Canada's national parks or spend the day walking through your favourite city.

In early fall, the weather conditions are ideal for boating, canoeing and fishing, making it even easier to add excursions to your fall foliage train trip. We'll take care of the planning so that all you have to think about is which activity you want to try first.

#2 Travel tip: Fall requires layers

The weather at this time of year can be quite variable. Pack layers to stay cool or warm, as required. Bring light shirts, a fleece jacket and a waterproof coat.

Climate Forward

Trains are cleaner than planes, right.

The surprising carbon footprint of an Amtrak trip across America.

magog train tour

By Hiroko Tabuchi

Recently, I did something I’ve long dreamed of. I took the train across America.

The views were majestic, particularly as we swayed through the West. The Wi-Fi was bad, and the food not much better. But I wanted to do it partly because trains are cleaner than flying.

But when I got back home and crunched the numbers, I discovered something surprising: it would have been less polluting for me to have flown.

As a climate journalist, I often fly to report my articles, but I’ve always worried about the climate cost. Flying in jets that burn a lot of fuel is probably one of the most polluting things we do. By taking a flight to report on a problem, I’m basically making that problem worse by causing tons of planet-warming emissions that are heating up our planet to dangerous extremes.

So when I started to work on a story that would involve spending time with two climate scientists at Stanford University — one who wants to rid the school of fossil fuel funding, the other fully funded by Exxon — I wondered whether I could try something different.

What if I traveled from New York to Stanford by train, a method of transportation that generally has a far smaller climate footprint ?

The most direct route was to take the Lake Shore Limited train to Chicago, then the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville, Calif., just outside San Francisco.

That 3,400-mile journey would take a daunting 72 hours. But I convinced my editors to let me use a work day, plus a few vacation days, to take the trip.

I was set. And I was doing my part to save the planet. Right?

Wrong. In short, I took a train across America and ended up emitting more planet-warming emissions, not less. I’ll explain why in just a bit.

The journey itself was epic . I boarded a packed train at New York Penn Station and was quickly speeding along the Hudson River at sunset. After a train change in Chicago, and traversing Iowa and Nebraska, we reached the Colorado Rockies. Our ascent from the flat plains to the green forests, then through the snow-capped Rockies, the deserts of Utah and the panoramic Sierra Nevada, was nothing short of magical.

A view of Hiroko Tabuchi’s legs and feet as she sits in the train. She is wearing light gray pants and black shoes.

It was also a slog. A sleeper cabin would have cost more than $2,000, so I was in an upright seat the entire trip. (Compression socks helped.) That still cost $600, about the same price flying the same route would have cost during the holiday season. I’d heard that the dining car was expensive, so I brought along vegetable sticks, crackers, cheese, hummus, instant noodles and miso soup. I tried to work on the Lake Shore Limited, but the Wi-Fi was down. There was no internet at all on the California Zephyr.

But then I did the math on my emissions.

A nonstop flight from New York to San Francisco emits, on average, about 840 pounds of carbon dioxide per economy class passenger, according to Google Flights, whose data is independently reviewed . That’s equivalent to burning 420 pounds of coal, or more than the annual emissions of someone living in Cameroon. Air travel is wildly polluting.

But what about trains? I tracked down several estimates of carbon emissions per passenger-mile, including Amtrak’s official estimate. What I got back: My cross-country train journey had emitted somewhere from 950 to 1,133 pounds of carbon dioxide per passenger.

There are a few reasons for this result. Amtrak is far cleaner than flying where its tracks are electrified, along the Northeast Corridor, from Washington to Boston. But outside the Northeast, Amtrak trains run on diesel, a highly polluting fuel.

What’s more, Amtrak’s trains are decades old. (Its single-level Amfleet cars were built in the late 1970s.) Add to that generous seat pitches, large old-fashioned private rooms for longer-distance trains, a longer, winding route across the country and “per-passenger-mile emissions go through the roof,” said Justin Roczniak , a co-host of “Well There’s Your Problem,” a podcast about engineering.

Amtrak is still the more climate-friendly option for the vast majority of travelers, who on average travel 300 to 400 miles, said Olivia Irvin, a spokeswoman for the rail company. (That is, not many people are crazy enough to go cross-country by train.) A 2022 Department of Transportation study found that traveling by train from Los Angeles to San Diego generated less than half the emissions , per passenger, of flying, or driving. For Boston to New York, an electrified route, taking the train generated less than a fifth the emissions of flying or driving.

It’s when journeys start getting longer than about 700 miles that planes start to gain an advantage on trains. Planes burn the most fuel when they take off and climb to altitude. That makes short flights very inefficient — you’re burning all that fuel only to travel a short distance. (Some countries, like France and Spain , have tried to ban the shortest flights when rail alternatives are available.)

Longer flights also tend to use larger aircraft, which provide economies of scale. And aircraft have become more fuel-efficient over the years. But choosing flights with several connections, for example, can quickly add to your footprint, because you’re taking off and landing multiple time

Flights for the same route can differ in terms of emissions by a factor of three, according to Dan Rutherford, director of research at the International Council on Clean Transportation, who advises Google on its flight emissions calculations. And comparing air and train travel can be tricky: Amtrak does not provide emissions estimates for different seat classes. Airplanes also emit other pollution like nitrogen oxides and soot, and form contrails , all of which warm the planet further.

And experts agree that aviation is going to be one of the hardest industries to decarbonize. With trains, electrification is already readily available. The technology is there. China, for example, has managed to electrify 70 percent of its train lines over the past decades and made them faster, too. And as the electric grid gets cleaner by adding more solar and wind, so will trains that run on electricity from that grid.

An electric, long-distance passenger plane is much further in our future.

Whether Amtrak will ever electrify outside of the Northeast corridor is another question, however. In America, tracks are owned by freight companies, which have resisted electrification. (Freight trains are also why some Amtrak trains stop frequently to make way. And all that stopping and starting makes America’s passenger trains even less energy-efficient.) Amtrak is currently updating its fleet with newer diesel trains, albeit ones that are less polluting and slightly faster.

One thing I did learn during my cross-country train journey: There are still a lot of Americans who love trains. The trains I took were booked solid. Among my fellow travelers were a college student traveling to see her long-distance boyfriend, and grandparents on a family trip (but they didn’t want to travel by car with their grandchildren).

But would I travel cross-country by train again? Probably not, unless Amtrak electrified the route. We can only dream.

Insider Today

Modern first-class train tickets include perks like lounge access and meals, but trains used to be even more luxurious.

Train travel has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with more passengers opting to avoid rising airfare costs and the environmental impact of flying. Amtrak reported its ridership reached 28.8 million in 2023 — a 24.6% increase from the previous year.

Here's a look back at how glamorous first-class train cars once were and how they've changed through the years.

In the early 1900s, first-class train carriages featured club cars with sumptuous leather furniture.

This ornate 1905 club car was part of the British railway company Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway.

In 1912, meals on the Great Eastern Railway's first-class dining cars were served on fine china and silverware embossed with the GER logo.

The carriages also featured upholstered leather booths with covers, known as antimacassars that were embroidered with "GER."

First-class lounges looked more like living rooms aboard the London, Midland, and Scottish Railway in 1928.

Train drivers strike for third time in four days

Members of the Aslef union are walking out in an almost two-year dispute over pay with no sign of a breakthrough.

magog train tour

News reporter @niamhielynch

Monday 8 April 2024 08:20, UK

Signage at Victoria station, London, as train drivers from the Aslef union launch a wave of fresh walkouts in a long-running dispute over pay. Train drivers at 16 rail companies are holding a rolling programme of one-day walkouts between April 5 and 8, coupled with a six-day ban on overtime. Picture date: Friday April 5, 2024.

Passengers on some of the UK's busiest rail routes will face travel chaos on Monday as train drivers are set to strike for the third time in four days.

Members of Aslef will walk out resulting in significant reductions in services, especially in East Anglia and the South East.

Train strikes: Full list of who will strike when

Aslef is embroiled in a near two-year long dispute over pay, with no sign of a breakthrough and no talks planned.

The strike will hit c2c, Gatwick Express, Greater Anglia, Southeastern, Southern, South Western Railway, Great Northern and Thameslink.

What train operators are affected?

No c2c trains will run on Monday, with its managing director Rob Mullen saying he was "really disappointed" an agreement hadn't been reached.

"The impact of this ongoing action is significant for our customers and colleagues," he said.

"I'm hopeful that further meetings with the unions are productive and see progress made toward concluding this challenging time for the railway."

Gatwick Express

There will be no Gatwick Express services but Gatwick Airport will continue to be served by the limited non-stop Southern shuttle.

Great Northern

There will be no Great Northern services on Monday.

Greater Anglia

Greater Anglia said its first trains of the day will start later and last trains finish earlier than normal, excluding the Stansted Express.

An hourly train service will operate on the following Greater Anglia routes: Norwich/Colchester and London Liverpool Street, Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street, and Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street

A bi-hourly train service will run between Cambridge and London.

No other Greater Anglia services will operate on any other routes.

Southeastern

The operator said most of its routes and stations will be closed. There will be an extremely limited service where trains are running and the operator advised customers not to travel.

A statement said: "If you do travel, expect severe disruption, plan ahead and allow much more time for your journey.

"Trains that are running will be extremely busy, they start later and finish early.

"You may be unable to board trains at some stations, and we estimate that there could be queues for up to two hours due to the very limited service.

"Only 29 out of 165 Southeastern stations will be open. No rail replacement buses will serve stations that are closed."

Southern said there will be no trains running across the vast majority of its network, with a limited shuttle service running non-stop between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport.

South Western Railway

South Western Railway said a significantly reduced service will operate on a small number of lines, while the rest of its network will be closed.

Trains will only run between 7am and 7pm.

There will be no Thameslink services running, except for a limited shuttle service calling at Luton, Luton Airport Parkway and London St Pancras and another limited non-stop shuttle service between London Kings Cross and Cambridge.

The union says the dispute has cost the industry over £2bn, far more than it would have cost to resolve the conflict.

Aslef members at 16 train companies are also banning overtime on Monday and Tuesday which will further disrupt services.

Picket lines will be mounted outside the railway stations of operators affected by the strike.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said his members remained solidly behind the industrial action and criticised the government and rail companies for the lack of contact over the past year.

The government introduced a new law last year aimed at ensuring minimum levels of service during strikes, but none of the train companies have opted to use it.

A Rail Delivery Group spokesperson said: "Train companies are working through plans to manage the unnecessary disruption to our passengers caused by this damaging industrial action.

"Minimum service levels are one potential tool for that but they are not a silver bullet.

"In the meantime, we remain committed to resolving this dispute and our offer, which would take average driver salaries to £65,000 for a four-day week without overtime, remains on the table."
