Bonnie Raitt announces 2023 Melbourne and Sydney shows with Mavis Staples

Promoters Bluesfest Touring have also announced a pair of shows by US blues rocker Marcus King the same month

Bonnie Raitt, Mavis Staples

Bonnie Raitt has announced she’ll return to Australia for the first time in six years, with the US blues singer-songwriter set to play shows in Melbourne and Sydney in April 2023.

Raitt will perform at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on April 5, before taking to Darling Harbour Theatre in Sydney two days later on April 7. For both shows, R&B legend Mavis Staples will be on support duties, returning after her own Australian tour in 2020 just prior to the onset of the pandemic.

Raitt last performed in Australia in 2017, as part of that year’s Bluesfest line-up. Since then, she’s released her 18th studio album, ‘Just Like That…’ which arrived in April of this year, and marked her first full-length since 2016’s ‘Dig In Deep’. Staples’ latest album also arrived this year – a collaboration with Levon Helm titled ‘Carry Me Home’.

Bluesfest Touring, who are bringing out Raitt and Staples next year, have also announced a pair of April 2023 shows from US blues rocker Marcus King. Returning after a sold-out Australian tour in 2019, King will perform at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on April 10, before a show at Melbourne’s Northcote Theatre on April 12. King’s debut album, ‘El Dorado’, arrived in 2020.

Tickets for all four shows will go on sale next Thursday (August 18) at 12pm AEST. Pre-sales kick off two days earlier on August 16 – register for Bonnie Raitt here and Marcus King here .

Bonnie Raitt & Mavis Staples Join Forces For 2023 Australian Tour

By Emmy Mack

Two of the biggest voices in blues and Americana music are linking up for a pair of massive shows in Australia next year.

Bluesfest Touring is bringing multi-GRAMMY Award winners Bonnie Raitt and Mavis Staples to our shores, with the power duo playing theatre shows in Sydney and Melbourne in April of next year.

WATCH: Bonnie Raitt – ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’

The shows will mark Raitt’s first time in Australia in six years, and she’ll be coming armed with her new album,  Just Like That , which currently sits at #1 on the USA Billboard Blues Charts.

As for Staples, the 83-years-young GRAMMY Hall of Famer was the focal point of Bluesfest Touring’s final tour before Covid struck in March 2020, so her post-lockdown return will no doubt be extra special.

A special pre-sale will begin from 12pm AEST next Tuesday, 16th August, with tickets on sale to the general public from 12PM AEST Thursday, 18th August. Catch all the details below.

Meanwhile, Byron Bay Bluesfest has announced it’ll be back in action for Easter 2023 . We don’t have any lineup details yet, but since Raitt and Staples will both be in the country around that same time, it won’t be a shock if we end up seeing both of their names on the bill.

Live Review: Mavis Staples, Bonnie Raitt @ Darling Harbour Theatre

An unforgettable performance by two outstanding legends!

mavis staples tour australia

Two weeks after Mavis Staples last visited Australia, the world completely shut down. At 80 years old, it was understandably feared that this may have been the very last chance we got to spend an evening with this certified soul legend. Thankfully, the last surviving Staples Singer has made her way back down under at 83. “I'm a soldier, y'all!” she crows at the end of Fight  – and boy, is she right. When most people her age spend their days staring out the window, Staples still reaches in deep and delivers a heartfelt performance. Her voice is shaky and croaky and takes a minute to warm up – but the passion and the conviction do not wane for a second. Whether she's delving into her own catalogue or whipping out fun covers like her vibrating take on Talking Heads ' Slippery People , you can both see and feel how much performing still means to Staples after over half a century up on stage. 45 minutes doesn't feel like nearly enough time in the presence of such greatness, but it's worth taking stock of how lucky we are to have time with her still at all. Every last moment counts.

If consistency is key, consider Bonnie Raitt an expert locksmith. The Grammy-winning veteran has been enthralling Australian audiences since 1992, all with little more beyond her powerful voice and her virtuoso blues guitar playing. She's never needed many whistles and bells to make her shows feel special – just hand her a six-string and have a tight band on call, and she'll have the crowd enraptured just like that. Tonight, her first Sydney show in six years proves to be no exception to this. It's an understated affair, with only a few lighting changes and a spotlight accompanying Raitt and co. during the set. It's this straightforward nature, however, that plays to Raitt's strengths – she can allow for songs to speak for themselves, whether it's the tasteful restraint and close vocal harmony of Nick of Time or the swinging groove of Something to Talk About .

Raitt has lost some close friends since she was last here. One of the more recent ones was Renee Geyer , who passed at the start of 2023. Raitt spoke to the audience of attending a memorial service for the late singer and reflected on her passing with Livin' for the Ones – its resolute chorus, “Keep livin' for the ones/The ones who didn't make it”, ringing powerfully true. Another untimely loss that Raitt touches upon is country legend John Prine , who was one of the first noted victims of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-2020.

Of course, Raitt has been singing Prine's beloved Angel of Montgomery for nearly 50 years at this point – but now, on her first tour here since Prine's death, the song stirs even deeper and more resonant emotions. Through watering eyes at its conclusion, Raitt thanks the audience for loving both Prine and his song as much as she and the band do. How could it ever be otherwise?

For as much as tonight is about taking stock and looking back, Raitt also finds the time to contrast that with a little fun. She's playful in her storytelling and surprising in her covers – delivering a one-two of 80s classics during the set with INXS ' Need You Tonight and Talking Heads' Burning Down the House . While neither is the kind of song you'd normally associate with Raitt's style of music, her husky vocals and the band's smooth, slinking arrangement make the translation a relatively seamless one. After bringing the house down with a powerhouse performance of her signature song I Can't Make You Love Me and a beaming rendition of One Belief Away , there's one thing left to do: Play the blues. She invites Mavis Staples' guitarist Rick Holstrom out on stage, and everybody jams on B.B. King 's Never Make You Move Too Soon to send the audience home with a smile on their faces. We have, again, been collectively unlocked by Raitt's consistency, her heart and her evergreen talent.

Mavis was brilliant, fun and gave us good energy, but I couldn't stop from being disappointed as the show lasted only 1h... It should at least have been much cheaper then

Mavis Staples at Lincoln Center Outdoors last night was nothing short of amazing. Mavis is a national treasure and you can feel the love exuding from her and her magnificant band. I who am a photographer tried to catch some of her on video but, it proved a challanging job because, all I wanted to do was dance and sing along. I have loved the Staple Singers for decades now as they could break through all types of genres of music and Mavis is still doing the thing. God Bless her and long may she roll.

Just loved the show top notch performer who you can feel that this is her giving all of herself in love to all of us. Her talking was both funny and drew you in that I imagine her strength and sense of humor had something to do to get her through those very ugly years of the 50's and 60's racial wrongs and still she is a beautiful grateful soul. Can't say enough good about this fantatic voice, music and woman. Musical history.

Mavis is a music legend! She said in the show that she wanted to make the audience feel good for a while... Maybe six months!

I am pretty sure she accomplished that

If we had the ability to assess who is the most beloved figure in music — not in overall numbers, but sheer adoration, per capita and per peer — it likely wouldn’t be Taylor or Beyoncé but Mavis Staples , who has been taking us there since the late ’60s. There being the smile that crosses anyone’s face when fortunate enough to be in the same room, or even in just giving a passing thought to that voice, that presence, and all the different ways in which Staples embodies righteousness. The term “national treasure” doesn’t even begin to get at it.

Popular on Variety

Staples and Raitt nearly had a mild flirtation going on, and that seemed contagious. When Raitt was separately dueting with Browne, she had a moment of spontaneously blurting: “God he’s so good looking, isn’t he?,” noting that after all these years, she was “still looking at him, going, he’s still got it.” (“Bonnie’s still got it, too,” he replied, taking the compliment.)

Stapleton provided more contemporary firepower, hiding his from the spotlight under the shadow of his ever-present cowboy hat but letting his voice ring loud and clear alongside Staples’ on a moving duet of “Friendship,” first recorded by her father, “Pops” Staples, near the end of his life.

Hozier was the artist on the bill with the most heat in the present moment, with a song (“Too Sweet”) currently in the top 5. He also has some of the best bona fides for appearing at a tribute, since he wrote a song that in part pays tribute to Staples and then got her to sing on it — “Nina Cried Power” (named after another great singer who is name-checked in the tune), a single from his second album. Staples did not come out and reprise her vocal on that song, a duty that was instead ably taken over by the night’s backup troupe, the McCrary Sisters. In the absence of the guest of honor, he paid tribute to Staples as he does every night on tour, offering a spoken testimony about her historical impact.

“Artists like Mavis, in the words of WB Yeats, can hold in their work, in the same thought, reality and justice,” Hozier said. “And these two very often opposing things can show us a picture of our world, but also show us our love and the small things  — it could be love between people, our neighbors — the small solidarities that hold our world together. One such example of that, a critical mass, obviously, was the civil rights movement. I say this every show when we play this song: The civil rights movement here in America that Mavis was in the center of directly inspired the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland… And there’s an Irish revolutionary by the name of James Connolly who once wrote that ‘no revolution is ever complete without its poetical expression.’ I just want to say, Mavis has always represented to me the poetical expression of the ongoing revolution of love and kindness.”

Hozier has an earthy side to go along with his high-mindedness, as anyone who has heard “Too Sweet” can attest. And so he paid tribute to Staples having these different sides, too — and showed off his own latent, classic R&B inclinations — by following “Nina Cried Power” with a cover of the sexiest song in Mavis’ career, “Let’s Do It Again,” a No. 1 pop and R&B hit for the Staple Singers in 1975.

“Tweedy wrote this song for me. What year was that? — oh-eiight — and it’s the most beautiful song I had ever heard. So we went on and recorded it, and it got us a Grammy.” At another point in the show, Tweedy sang without Staples in reviving another song he wrote for her, “One True Vine,” the title track of their followup collaboration in 2013.

Performing on his own, Browne told the audience about his discovery of Staples at a key early point in his life. “I always tell Mavis that she’s been with me my whole life, but actually, it was (age) 15 when I first heard the Staple Singers in my sister’s apartment in Height Asbury and it changed everything.” That was when he started finding my own voice and singing my own songs,” and Browne said he was performing his song “These Days” for no other reason than “it’s from that period in my life.”

But he had a more tangible reason for following that with another original song, “World in Motion,” for which Raitt came out to share vocals and play slide guitar. “I recorded it with my band,” he said, “but a good friend of mine had the idea getting it to Pops Staples and having him sing it, which he did in ’92. And the person who had that idea was my good friend, my sister Bonnie Raitt. I’m always revising songs, they change all the time… but this is definitely my favorite version of this song, Pops Staples’ ‘World in Motion.’”

The two key members of Black Pumas, backed by the house band, did their own career-making “Colors,” along with a cover and a cover — the George Clinton-co-penned 1971 Funkadelic song “Can You Get to That,” which Staples and Tweedy adapted in 2013 for the “One True Vine” album.

Closing out the first act, before a brief intermission, Grace Potter covered a song from Mavis’ solo debut album of 1969, called “You’re Driving Me (Into the Arms of a Stranger),” and then emerged from behind her keyboard to explain what Staples meant to her. “This woman, she changed my life,” Potter said. “She made me see my future self and plan ahead for the woman I would become. And I want to play you that song that I wrote after meeting Mavis.” But, she cautioned, before playing “Big White Gate” (a 2013 song written about a woman becoming penitent as she approaches death), “I want to be clear, this is not a sign about Mavis, because it’s not very complimentary!”

Hozier was not the only performer of the night who’d been driven to actually name-check “Mavis” in a song, although his was not a literal tribute to Staples. He performed that original number from 2020 before covering another of the night’s cover-of-a-cover — Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” which not everyone remembers that the Staple Singers did a near-instantaneous version of on a 1967 album (reaching No. 66 at the time on the Hot 100, a few years before the family group really broke big).

Trombone Shorty, a high point of Staples’ 80th birthday concert, came back to reach similar peaks for her 85th, playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” in the first half as well as sitting in with Taj Mahal and Robert Randolph for a jammy moment in the second.

Other highlights included Randolph’s “Baptize Me,” Mahal’s “You’ll Need Somebody on Your Bond,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken ” and “Keep Your Eyes on the Prize,” McDonald’s “People Get Ready” and “Freedom Highway,” Keb’ Mo’s “Clap Your Hands” and “Have a Little Faith,” and Jones’ “To Live” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

To answer one FAQ, the YouTube Theater event was not filmed for a planned broadcast, even though most all-star concerts put together by Blackbird Presents are; it was a true you-had-to-be-there gala.

Celebrating Mavis seems to be a quinquennial event in L.A., as it doesn’t seem all that long ago that Staples was being feted with an 80th birthday party for the public at downtown’s Orpheum, so here is already looking forward to her 90th, exact local venue to come.

Music | Mavis Staples joins lineup for Heritage Theatre’s 20th anniversary

Iconic musician, 84, takes the stage may 10 at campbell venue.

mavis staples tour australia

Before three-time Grammy winner Mavis Staples takes the Heritage Theatre stage May 10 for a show celebrating the Campbell venue’s 20th anniversary.

In addition to her trio of Grammys, Staples, who rose to fame as a member of her family’s band The Staple Singers, is also a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

She is both a Blues and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient and a Kennedy Center honoree. She was named one of the ”100 Greatest Singers of all Time” by Rolling Stone.

With songs like “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” Staples has also earned recognition as a civil rights icon.

CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

● July 12 – The CSO opens its 88th summer season at Ravinia with Alsop and two featured soloists, soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha* and pianist Michelle Cann.* In an evening of American music, the orchestra opens with Aaron Copland’s beloved classic Appalachian Spring followed by James P. Johnson’s Charleston, highlighting this early jazz piano leader’s influence and the iconic dance of the same name. Rangwanasha is in the spotlight for Samuel Barber’s evocative portrait of a small boy in the American South, Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The program wraps with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with Cann at the keyboard making her CSO debut. ● July 13 – South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe* joins Alsop and debuts with the CSO performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack). Themes of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community permeate the program, as the piece is put in perspective alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony and its distinct explorations of fate. ● July 19 – Conductor Ted Sperling joins the CSO with special guest vocalists to celebrate two iconic pop songwriters, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. ● July 20 – Alsop and the CSO take the stage for Gustav Mahler’s final major work for orchestra, Symphony No. 9. Voted as the greatest symphony of all-time in BBC Music 2 Magazine, the evening-long work has beguiled audiences since its 1912 premiere by Bruno Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic. ● July 21 – Winner of the gold medal at the International Chopin Competition and recipient of many esteemed prizes, Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino* reunites with Alsop and makes his Ravinia and CSO debuts performing Fryderyk Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In the second half of the program, Alsop explores symphonic storytelling during the turn of the 19th century, leading the CSO in Richard Strauss’s tone poem Don Juan and Maurice Ravel’s choreographic symphony Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2). ● July 25 – Mendelssohn's hit violin concerto, played by Augustin Hadelich^, is in the spotlight as Alsop leads the CSO. Also featured on the program are Bernstein’s joyous Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Stravinsky's timeless Firebird Suite. Conductor Alena Hron , the 2024–26 Taki Alsop Fellow, guests on the podium to lead Geroge Walker’s Icarus in Orbit. ● July 26 – The centerpiece of Breaking Barriers 2024 is a space-themed concert complete with visuals and introductions by NASA specialists. Alsop conducts the orchestra in Holst’s The Planets, followed by a suite from Falkenberg’s The Moons Symphony. Audiences will see science come alive and hear from planetary scientists, including Astronaut Nicole Stott together with the composer, as they discuss how Falkenberg’s symphony offers new perspectives for humanity to contemplate our home in the cosmos. ● July 28 – Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship alum Carolyn Kuan leads this year’s Tchaikovsky Spectacular, complete with Ravinia’s signature cannons in the 1812 Overture. Making her CSO debut, she opens the program with the complete music from the first act of The Nutcracker. Desirée Ruhstrat also makes her CSO debut as the soloist for the cherished Violin Concerto. ● August 2 – Conductor Valentina Peleggi, another TACF alum, returns to Ravinia and the CSO, following a guest appearance during last summer’s Breaking Barriers Festival, to join with esteemed pianist Jorge Federico Osorio on Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto. Peleggi will also lead Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini and Respighi’s Pines of Rome. ● August 4 – Music director, conductor, and arranger Kevin Stites explores the music of legendary performer and film composer Henry Mancini for the annual Gala Benefit Evening. Curated and hosted by actor Rob Lindley, “Mancini at 100: The Music of Henry Mancini, from the big screen, to the small screen, to the stage and beyond” features Broadway vocalists Jessie Mueller* (Waitress, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Norm Lewis* 3 (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), and Karen Mason* (Sunset Boulevard), with all three making their Ravinia and CSO debuts. ● August 9 & 11 – The CSO delves into operatic repertory as a semi-staging of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Idomeneo is conducted by Los Angeles Opera (and former Ravinia) Music Director James Conlon in the Martin Theatre. The work, set in Crete in 1200 BCE and telling a story from the Trojan War, shines light on a talented group of singers. Starring are tenor Matthew Polenzani as Greek king Idomeneo, soprano Andrea Carroll* as princess Ilia, and soprano Alexandria Shiner* as princess Elettra. ● August 10 – Conlon will lead an all-Mozart program with the CSO in the festival’s Pavilion between the opera performances. The program will feature both of the composer’s G-minor symphonies—the “little” No. 25, K. 183, and the “great” No. 40, K. 550—along with the Violin Concerto No. 5, welcoming James Ehnes as soloist on the violin. ● August 18 – Conductor Jonathan Rush, a frequent Ravinia guest in recent seasons and former assistant to Alsop, returns to the CSO podium. Chicago native Rachel Barton Pine takes the stage with Rush and the orchestra as the soloist for José White Lafitte’s Violin Concerto and Niccolò Paganini’s La Campanella
