Best Wineries & Wine Tours to Experience in South Australia’s McLaren Vale Wine Region

The McLaren Vale wine region is just 40 minutes south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The region’s proximity to breathtaking coastline and its abundant vineyards makes it one of the prettiest wine regions in South Australia. It is patterned with abundant vineyards and is well-established, with wineries producing gutsy reds that rival those from Barossa Valley .

McLaren Vale is bordered on three sides by Adelaide to the north, Mt. Lofty Ranges to the east and south, and Gulf St. Vincent to the west. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate cooled by gully winds that blow through the ranges, and ocean breezes that blow up through the Gulf of St. Vincent. The region benefits from warm summers, moderate winters, and winter rainfall.

Vineyards in McLaren Vale South Australia

The History

According to “How to Drink Australian” by Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross , an English immigrant named John Reynell, who came to Australia in 1838, planted the first vines in McLaren Vale. He produced his first vintage in 1842. Shortly afterward, Reynell hired another English immigrant, Thomas Hardy, who then went on to become the largest winemaker in the colony by the late 1890s. The turn of the century brought a wine boom in South Australia.

In 1947, a wave of European immigrants brought a renewed interest in wine, and, as such, a resurgence in new plantings took place. By the late 1950s, a boutique wine industry had emerged in McLaren Vale. Coriole, Wirra Wirra, David Noon, and other producers who are still significant today emerged in the 60s and 70s. The 2000s ushered in a new era for McLaren Vale with a new set of wineries, environmental sustainability, and site specificity.

One of the Most Diverse Wine Regions

Today McLaren Vale is one of the most diverse wine regions in Australia with over 80 cellar doors. With easy access from Adelaide , the region offers luxury accommodations, world-class cuisine, and of course, some of the best wine in Australia.

While most people visit McLaren Vale on a day trip out of Adelaide, there are plenty of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and Airbnb rentals throughout the region. For an insider’s look at McLaren Vale, Chooks Little Winery Tours offers small-group, customized tours to hidden gems in the area.

The tasting room is housed in a heritage-listed barn overlooking estate vineyards. Inside has a rustic, “edgy” feel to it. Outdoor seating is also available. Alpha Box and Dice is popular with a young crowd and fills up quickly. Arrive early or book ahead.

In 2008, Alpha Box and Dice embarked on a journey to produce an Alphabet of Wines. Each “letter” represents an individual winemaking project. The winery aims to produce different varieties grown in South Australia based on availability and the quality of fruit. Winemaker Sam Berkata employs innovation by bending traditional winemaking norms such as including skin contact in his white wines. You can also expect delightful Rosés and unique red varieties like Saigneé Aglianico and Pinot Meunier. The winery produces nearly sixty different wines, offering something for everyone’s palate.

Open Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Reservations recommended. Tasting fees $15 (AUD) – $20 (AUD).

Coriole Vineyards

79 Chaffeys Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8323 8305

What Guests Like About It: Beautiful views, onsite restaurant, and excellent wines

Coriole Vineyards

It produces all-estate wines with several international varietals mixed into their 80 acres of land under vine. Coriole has been a pioneer of Italian varieties since 1985, with the oldest Sangiovese and Fiano vineyards in Australia.

Coriole Vineyard Restaurant uses ingredients sourced from McLaren Vale as well as the winery’s own produce garden and farm. The menu features two different “Feed Me” options at $80 (AUD) and $95 (AUD) per person, plus an a la carte menu on weekdays. Guests can also choose an optional wine pairing. It is a favorite for locals and nearby Adelaide residents, so be sure to book ahead if you plan to have a meal.

Groups of six or more must have a pre-booked reservation. The tasting fee is $30 (AUD) per person and includes cheese platters to share.

58 Osborn Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8329 4888

What Guests Like About It: There is so much to see and do here beyond the wine tasting

D'Arenberg's "Rubiks Cube"

D’Arenberg’s popular cellar door stands out in the McLaren Vale Region for its unusual shape and color. Its tasting room, restaurant, and museum are housed in a five-story Rubik’s cube-like structure. Located on the top level of the d’Arenberg Cube, the tasting room has panoramic views over McLaren Vale, the Willunga Hills and the Gulf St. Vincent.

The Osborn family, in its fourth generation of owning the winery, has teamed up with the State Government Regional Development Fund to create this designation-worthy cellar door and art Museum in the heart of McLaren Vale. “The Cube” is not the first major influence the Osborn family has had in the region during their 150+ year history. Back in the 1970s, during the South Australian vine pull scheme, the family saved several old-vine Grenache vineyards from being ripped up by purchasing them themselves.

The d’Arenberg Cube is like walking into the mind of Chester Osborn, the Fourth Generation of the family, who is the creative and expressive personality behind it. But lest you think d’Arenberg is just a gimmick, the wine here is award-winning. The iconic Dead Arm Shiraz and the Hermit Crab, to name a few, are best sellers.

The restaurant onsite is designed with an equally artful design in mind. d’Arry’s Verandah restaurant is open for a degustation menu during lunch hours. Other epic offerings include a helicopter tour, plane tour, blending of your wine, and more. Be sure to stop by the toilet on your way out…you’ll be amused and delighted at the quirkiness.

There is a $10 fee to enter the cube itself; this allows you admission into their Alternate Realties Museum and a tasting of their wines. Open daily 10:00 am – 4:30 pm. Reservations recommended.

+61 8 8383 0098

What Guests Like About It: The beautiful grounds, guided tasting, cheese and Ploughman’s platters

Outside tasting area at Hugo Family Estate

The 50-acre Hugo Family Estate is one of the most eastern in the McLaren Vale region, at 180-meters above sea level. As a result, conditions are remarkably cooler and ideal for premium grape growing and hence, the production of fine, well-balanced elegant white and red wines.

Inside tasting room at Hugo Family Estate

The Hugo family has utilized this climatic advantage to ensure a high level of consistency across vintages and by selectively hand picking from the vines. Expect elegant and subtle Chardonnays, Shiraz that is spicy yet soft with tannins, and herbaceous earth Tempranillos. The cellar door features nearly 360-degree gorgeous views of the surrounding vineyards. Open daily, $15 (AUD) refundable tasting fee. Reservations encouraged.

Kangarilla Road Cellar Door

44 Hamilton Road, McLaren Flat

+61 8 8383 0533

What Guests Like About It: A wide variety of wines to suit everyone’s palate, colorful artwork

One of the best things about Kangarilla Road Wines is that although they could easily wear much bigger price tags, they don’t! Fantastic value given the quality and there is no set tasting menu. Guests are welcome to try any wine that Kangarilla produces.

A well-appointed tasting room is adorned with unique artworks. Open daily. Reservations preferred but walk-ins welcome.

It’s fun, colorful wine labels, whimsical names, and a fun atmosphere have helped develop almost a cult following. Plus, its wines are seriously delicious.

The cellar door offers a seasonal rotating menu that includes small bites and cheese, charcuterie, and produce platters that pair perfectly with its wines.

Open daily 10:00 am – 4:30 pm. Tasting fees $20 – $30 (AUD) per person. Reservations recommended.

Oliver’s Taranga

246 Seaview Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8323 8498

What Guests Like Best About It: Exceptional customer service, innovative wines

After six generations of grape growing in McLaren Vale, Oliver’s Taranga released its first estate-bottle wine in 1994. Oliver’s still sells grapes to some of the biggest names in South Australia but continues to make its own estate wines with great success.

The tasting room forges contemporary design with historic buildings. From the Brioni’s Blend, dedicated to 6 th generation cousin Brioni Oliver, to Corrina’s Shiraz Cabernet, named after winemaker Corrina Wright, to a dozen other small-batch wines, there is something for every budget and taste. You can count on knowledgeable servers and excellent service at this family-owned winery.

Open daily from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Tasting fees from $15 – $30 (AUD). Reservations recommended.

The Magic of the McLaren Vale Wine Region

One could spend a lifetime immersed in the wonders of McLaren Vale, learning something new each day. Despite our team taking three trips and investing countless hours researching and visiting wineries in the region, there is still an abundance left to discover. Our authors have gained a unique perspective and understanding of McLaren Vales’s most exceptional producers. These journeys have served as a jumping-off point for sharing these remarkable places with others, hoping they, too, may someday experience the magic of Barossa Valley.

How can I visit wineries in McLaren Vale?

Research and Select Wineries: Begin by identifying which wineries you wish to visit. McLaren Vale is home to over 80 cellar doors, ranging from boutique family-run estates to well-known labels. Consider wineries that offer not just tastings but also tours, dining experiences, and unique offerings like blending your own wine. A mix of large and small vineyards can provide a comprehensive view of the region’s wine-making landscape. Book in Advance: For a seamless experience, it’s advisable to book your tastings and tours in advance, especially during peak seasons or for popular wineries. This ensures availability and often provides a more personalized experience. Visitation Options Self-Drive: If you prefer flexibility, driving yourself is a viable option. McLaren Vale is conveniently located about 40 minutes south of Adelaide. Renting a car allows you to explore at your own pace and visit off-the-beaten-path wineries. Ensure a designated driver is part of your plan for a safe tasting experience. Guided Tours: For those who prefer not to worry about navigation or driving, numerous guided tour options are available. These tours range from small, intimate groups to larger, more social experiences. They often include lunch and visits to selected wineries, providing a curated taste of the region. Guided tours not only offer insight into the wine-making process but also the history and culture of McLaren Vale. If we had to choose one, we suggest booking a private and guided wine tour of the region with Best Wine Tours , which begins in Adelaide. Cycling Tours: For the more adventurous, consider a bike tour through the vineyards. This eco-friendly option allows you to enjoy the stunning landscapes at a leisurely pace. Bike hire services and guided cycling tours are available, combining physical activity with wine tasting. Escapegoat Adventures offers the most highly-rated wine & bike tour in McLaren Vale . Seasonal Considerations: Timing your visit can greatly affect your experience. Harvest season (February to April) is a fascinating time to see the wineries in full swing, but it’s also busier. Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather and the landscape’s vibrant colors. Local Delicacies: Many wineries in McLaren Vale also offer local produce platters, cheese boards, and on-site restaurants to pair their wines with regional delicacies, so be on the lookout! Stay in the Region: Consider spending a few nights in McLaren Vale to fully immerse yourself in the wine culture. Accommodations range from cozy B&Bs to luxury lodges, many of which are nestled among vineyards as we discussed earlier in this travel guide.

What People Have Said...

We were lucky enough to spend the day touring McLaren Vale with Kerry (and got to meet Mr. Chook as well!) and I can't begin to express just how fabulous it was. You can see how loved the Chooks are by the local wineries, and as a result, their guests are treated with the utmost care. Our last stop was extra special, a place called Danshi Rise (an old neighbour of the Chooks). Kerry also took our box of wine to be shipped home to us in Melbourne (at no additional cost other than the shipping fee). Of all the winery tours we've done anywhere in the world, this was was extra special. Thank you Kerry!!!!

What an absolutely wonderful day we had yesterday! We asked Chook to organise & take us & 12 friends on a tour which included lunch. All of us reckon Chook went beyond our wildest dreams of a fun day which we could enjoy without having to drive. We would recommend Chook's Little Winery Tours wholeheartedly. Thanks. Neil & Mary + 12

From the moment Chook jumped out of the van to greet us we knew we were in good hands and what a fantastic day we had. He selected a great variety of vineyards and winemakers with diverse personalities which made it all the more interesting. The travel time seemed to go quickly with Chook entertaining us with lively and animated stories of his background and local history. If we get back to Adelaide, Chook will be the first on our calling list.

What a fabulous Wine Tour we had with Chook, his vast knowledge of the local Wineries and surrounding area was just amazing. So if you want to see the best McLaren Vale has to offer you won’t get better than Chooks Little Winery Tours. Highly recommend 5*

This tour went above and beyond my expectations. The initial booking of the tour is easy and efficient. Just complete the online form on their website and Chook will contact you with the booking details. The team develop a personalised itinerary and keep it relatively secret until the day of your tour. Chook’s delightful wife was our tour guide and drove us through the countryside in a roomy air conditioned van. There was only four of us on the tour and the other couple were lovely.

I would just like to say “Thank You” for an excellent service on Saturday 2 nd February.  It worked out so well having everyone transported to the Middlebrook Winery without any fuss.I will definite recommend you.   Kind Regards, Annette

Dear Chook, Once again many thanks for your professional service which went above and beyond what we expected.  I was so impressed with the way you and your team helped with all our logistics and believe that this helped make our conference a great success.  I have emailed Andreas Clark from Wine Australia this morning and asked him to arrange EFT payment of the rest of your bill today.  Andreas has confirmed that he will do so.  However please let me know if this hasn’t happened in the next few days and I will follow through. Sincerely, Vicki Waye

MCLAREN VALE WINE TOURS

If it’s the calm mixture of vineyards and beach you’re seeking, look no further than the dynamic region of McLaren Vale. Only a 40km trip south of Adelaide’s CBD, this area marks the origin of South Australia’s rich winemaking history, and is a hotspot for luxury Bed and Breakfasts, art, and world class restaurants. The region’s Mediterranean climate lends itself to production of exquisite red and whites, though it’s Shiraz that is the pick of the bunch here.

With over 30kms of coastline to marvel at, fresh and vibrant local produce, and the feeling that you’re a million miles away from Adelaide, McLaren Vale is a region with many faces, each one of them captivating.

Grenache, Cabernet, and emerging Italian and Spanish varieties such as Fiano, Vermentino, Tempranillo and Sangiovese give a Mediterranean twist to this surprising region, with warm summers and low rainfall.

With over 80 boutique cellar doors in McLaren Vale, sit back and relax as we select wineries according to your palate tastes, and introduce you to the sea and vines region of South Australia

Winery Lunches in McLaren Vale – Food for Thought

There is nothing better than getting a little day haze on a Friday, a hint of sunkissed goodness and a few wines in your system to finish off a hard week. The best thing about it? With an eclectic and beautiful cacophony of wine regions surrounding the main cities of Australia, there’s bound to be a region close by that’s going to deliver a killer time and some damn good wines. But for now, we’re looking at winery lunches in Mclaren Vale. Arguably one of the most famous regions in the country and certainly that of South Australia .

Want More Juice on the Regio n?

We’re going to be honest here: if you haven’t visited McLaren Vale before or experienced their wineries, you haven’t lived, plain and simple.

The McLaren Vale wine region is located just 45 minutes south of Adelaide in South Australia. It has a long history of viticulture and wine production, with its early origins beginning after the first settlers discovered the area during the early 1800s. As a major contributor to South Australia’s viticultural beginnings, the Mediterranean climate continues to drive unique wine styles and diverse food culture.

Best known for Shiraz, Mclaren Vale’s award-winning wines are tawny coloured with strong tannins and characteristic aromas of mocha, mulberries, chocolate and spice. For more info on the region check our article on Mclaren Vale Wineries: 6 Highly Rated Vineyards .

The Best McLaren Vale Wineries for Lunch

There are many ways to experience the McLaren Vale Wine region. It’s one of our favourite spots in South Australia and we love it for a variety of reasons, including its local produce and the way that regional restaurants craft their menus, working seasonally with available ingredients… Restaurants easily run rabid butchering a perfectly good dish with molecular restructuring, cooking with laser beams and other sciency culinary techniques the kitchen lab can think of.

The restaurants we’re about to detail… you’ll find nothing but a demonstration of fresh ingredients paired with utter perfection.

We’ve collated a list of the 5 best wineries in McLaren Vale for lunch. We wanted to pick something for everyone so we’ll include casual dining, picnic and grazing, and then something a little bit fancy-schmancy with some fine dining.

mclaren vale winery tour with lunch

Located at the centre of McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg is a combination of the old and new. Established in 1858 by German immigrant Johan d’Arenberg, it has now been taken over by fourth-generation family member Chester Osborn (who is known as the ‘mad winemaker’).

People say to you eat with your eyes before your stomach so much is true as the cube comes into sight. Somehow you just know that you’re in for a culinary treat.

The restaurant is casual with an emphasis on family-friendly dining. The Cubes Tasting Kitchen provides a relaxed atmosphere for you to experience the five senses by way of food, wine and art.

The Currant Shed

Mclaren vale vineyards

You can’t help but think there’s something very serene about The Currant Shed. We’re sure if we were ever to find ourselves in heaven this would feel very much like it.

The Currant Shed is a café and bakery which sits idyllically in the picturesque town of Blewitt Springs, South Australia. Nestled amongst wildflower farmlands between McLaren Vale and Aldinga, The Currant Shed offers morning mists, gentle breezes and rustic charm close to all that’s going on in the region, while still being a world away.

We’ll leave one of our favourite dishes here:

Cured and smoked port lincoln kingfish, wombok and radish salad, ice plant, beach bananas, finger limes, soy gel, micro coriander, togarashi, aromatic coconut sauce.

What did we tell you… an integral display of honest and innovative ingredients and certainly a contender for one of the best winery lunches in McLaren Vale.

Maxwell Wines

mclaren vale winery tour with lunch

Maxwell Wines is famous for its restaurant. It’s had multiple awards, including the prestigious James Halliday Best Winery Restaurant in Australia.

Their motto of “Wine, Art and Soul” represents their commitment to producing great wines with a strong focus on community involvement. Their winemaker’s cellar door also boasts the finest bottles of Shiraz you could possibly sample through this blessed wine country.

Maxwell Wines is so much more than just a wine producer, it’s become somewhat of an art gallery for the region. The Maxwell family are very passionate about art and have collected many works over time. The cellar door features their own paintings as well as those from other talented Australian and International artists.

Head chef Fabian Lehmann sports nothing but the finest quality using innovative and fresh ingredients sourced from around the magnificent wine region that is McLaren Vale.

Star of Greece

mclaren vale winery tour with lunch

The sea surge grinding against the sand, the transition of silence only broken by enthused conversation owned by excited guests and respectful staff. The menu is a culinary display of the sea’s smorgasbord with emphasis on fresh add local components cooked in a fashion that compliments both the flavours and the skills of a chef that has trained for a lifetime.

Fish and chips at the kiosk for the kids after a solid beach session. But if a 4-course meal matched with delicate wines from the region’s finest is more your flavour then we suggest the Chargrilled wagyu eye fillet with pumpkin puree, local oyster mushroom, broccolini, macadamia, and jus.

Although this isn’t a ‘WINERY’ Lunch in McLaren Vale per se, we’ve added it to the list anyway, sorry ’bout it.

Woodstock McLaren Vale

mclaren vale winery tour with lunch

A lavish garden setting, glasses half full with bold reds that reciprocates the clear benchmark of quality that McLaren Vale consistently supplies. Nibble plates, grazing platters, and FlammeKeuche – a german styled flatbread pizza that is topped with ingredients and covered in cheese just the way we likey. There are more carbs than you can poke a stick at on this menu, but leave the underlying guilt and dread of Monday’s treadmill sesh behind and have a crack.

Woodstock is a great function and family venue. There’s plenty of room to run around and even entertain the little native hoppers that quite often accommodate eager patrons.

If drool has begun cascading from the mouth, add this jewel of Athens to the list of the best winery lunches in McLaren Vale.

McLaren Vale Wineries – The Best Lunch in Town

The McLaren Vale Wine Region in South Australia is a beautiful and serene place in which to avoid wine tasting and joining in the festivities would be an absolute travesty. However, during the day when not much transpires, it can be rather expensive to tour by yourself, especially if you’re on the glorious wine train and driving isn’t in question. So jump on a wine tour, it’s 100 % the best way to see more than one winery and try more than 2 varieties.

We’ve written a wee little article on McLaren Vale Wineries that have tickled our fancy and it’s definitely an insight that you’ll want to gain before heading to the region. McLaren Vale wine region – vast as it is beautiful. Be sure to have a wine on us, drink responsibly, and support local tourism! Drink, be merry, and Enjoy!!

If you’ve enjoyed our take on ‘Winery Lunches in McLaren Vale’ but another region in South Oz would suit you better, We’ve covered a few regions worth visiting or at least reading about!
