The Red Rock 4-Wheelers work to reserve a little strength to keep our recreational trails open. To that end, we have been setting aside some funds for emergency use. We call it the Multiple Use Defense (MUD) Fund.

When trail access or other multiple uses of the public lands are threatened, it is safe to say that the most important defense need is someone’s time and effort. It takes dedicated personal effort just to plan how to spend available money. The most serious threats are likely to call for professional services, probably legal counsel and actions. The Red Rock 4-Wheelers are committed to defend and repair the Jeep Safari trails for all of our loyal supporters to enjoy, but we need your help. Read more and support the MUD Fund here.

La Sal Pass Rated: Moderate La Sal Pass climbs out of the valley via Pack Creek from the Moab side. This area was hit by a devastating wildfire in 2021, resulting in a road closure. The road is now back open, but be mindful of washouts and erosion, which are common following a wildfire.

Metal Masher Rated: Difficult to Extreme Metal Masher is another very popular "hard" trail in the Moab area. Comprised of slick rock, sand, and dirt, this trail offers experienced drivers everything they are looking for and more.

Moab Rim Rated: Severe One of the closest 4wd trails to the town of Moab, Moab Rim is a difficult and dangerous trail that requires your undivided attention but rewards you with awe-inspiring views of the Colorado River and the town of Moab.

You get amazing wheeling, and you can also take in the inspiring Little Arch with a view of the Colorado River behind it. The bold will continue to Golden Spike , Where Eagles Dare , and finish on Gold Bar Rim .

Porcupine Rim Rated: Difficult Don't miss this gem in the Sand Flats Recreation Area . While not as famous as other local trails, it is well worth the time and effort it takes to run this route.

Pritchett Canyon Rated: Extreme Pritchett Canyon is one of the most recognized names in the off-road community. Widely seen as the ultimate test of skill and endurance, this trail is packed with daunting rock-crawling challenges that will push even the most experienced drivers and vehicles to their limits.

Steel Bender Rated: Difficult to Severe Located a short distance from Moab and easily accessible, Steel Bender trail packs the entire Moab experience into a 9.5-mile adventure. With towering canyon walls, water crossings, sand dunes, slickrock fins, breathtaking vistas, and ledges requiring the famous "Moab Bump", this trail offers non-stop fun and is ideal for any adventure seeker or Jeep Badge of Honor trail enthusiast.

Top of the World Rated: Difficult to Severe Those iconic photos of offroad rigs perched on the edge of a sandstone slab with a stunning red valley backdrop come from the Top of the World trail. It's a pretty famous one!

Wipe-Out Hill Rated: Difficult to Severe While the name Wipe-Out Hill may sound a bit intimidating, there's so much more to this trail than just its infamous obstacle!

What I Discovered at My First Easter Jeep Safari in Moab

Among soaring slabs of sandstone, thousands of Jeep fans converge and the brand tests out its newest concepts.

Culture photo

KristinVShaw

If you stand on Main Street in Moab in the middle of April, someone driving a Jeep product will pass by approximately every 2.1 seconds. Moab is alive with Jeep juju, so it must be time for the annual Easter Jeep Safari , a week-long celebration of all things off-road. Thousands of people who are members of the church of slick rock crawl all over the routes that skirt around Arches National Park and obstacles with colorful names like Hell's Revenge and Poison Spider. Every turn is magnificently carved by nature from cross-stratified Navajo sandstone.

This is my first Easter Jeep Safari , and I’m checking it off my mental bucket list with glee. After two flights broken up by a four-hour layover in Denver, I arrive at the Moab airport. It’s a tiny place with one gate in a compact terminal; the ground crew dumps all the luggage in one semi-flat outdoor bin after each flight. The airport is less than 20 minutes from downtown Moab, and I hop into a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and fire up the V8 to get from there to the Hoodoo Moab Hotel.

Culture photo

Jeep’s “home away from home” is in the southeast quadrant of Utah, where red sandstone throws majestic shadows over the desert. The brand is very much at home here, and a substantial team flies in from Detroit to test out the newest crop of Jeep concepts. Easter Jeep Safari started out as a one-day affair in 1967, when the Moab Chamber of Commerce organized the event to attract tourists. Now, Jeep (and Jeepers) descends on Moab in force to drive on some of the toughest terrain Utah has to offer for off-roaders. While there, Jeep execs, product representatives, and engineers meet with customers who don’t pull any punches about what they like and don’t like about the brand’s vehicles.

Is this Heaven?

It is Holy Week, which means more than one thing to the people here. Red Rock 4 Wheelers , the club that leads the Easter Jeep Safari, calls Moab the “Mecca of four-wheeling” and there is the obvious reference to Easter Sunday, which marks the end of the event. Plus, during the Easter Jeep Safari there are a number of commandments to follow to keep the area as pristine as possible for generations to come.

Culture photo

“Don’t bust the crust!” is one of those directives, which means that you should avoid stepping on the cryptobiotic soil that serves as the desert’s delicate crust. Crypto, meaning ‘hidden’ plus biota, which means ‘life’ forms the base of the word that describes a microcosm of green-blue algae, lichen, moss, fungi, and other important life-giving substances.

A representative from the Bureau of Land Management gives us a stern talking-to about the flora and fauna of Moab and keeps a sharp eye on where the vehicles are putting their wheels. As I arrive in the top-of-the-food-chain Rubicon 392 in Sarge Green, she watches my feet when I dismount to make sure I’m not violating the ground beneath me. Throughout the week, Jeep is conscientious about how drivers treat the public land because it's a unique, special place for testing and visibility.

Staying on the marked trails is also expected, and refraining from tailgating is a smart idea. Don't be a jerk on the trail, basically.

Jeep Concepts Put to the Test

An array of concept vehicles is splayed out in front of me, including a few I have been eagerly waiting to see in person: the striking red-on-black D-Coder, a chopped Gladiator dubbed the Bob, and the all-electric Magneto 2.0. The first Magneto was on hand at the Easter Jeep Safari last spring , and while it looks very similar this year on the outside, the brand gave the concept a huge power boost. Now it makes 850 pound-feet of peak torque, which is more than three times the output of Magneto 1.0, and a staggering 625 horsepower.

Jeep boss Jim Morrison takes the co-pilot role as I climb into the front seat of the Magneto 2.0; it’s a big hop up into the EV, since it’s rocking 40-inch-tall tires mounted to 20-inch wheels. They’re massive. Morrison coaches me through a quick primer on using the unusual stickshift in the Wrangler concept, and we take off along the rocks. How a manual could possibly work in an electric vehicle requires a fairly detailed explanation, and since Caleb has already done that on The Drive , I don’t need to repeat it all. Check out his post here.

Culture photo

At this juncture, Morrison indicates that rowing your own Magneto won’t be an option for the masses. It’s too expensive to build.

Once I hop out of the Magneto, I'm ready to test out the Bob, named as such for the "bobbed" back end of a Gladiator. Luckily for me, off-road coach and Rebelle Rally champion Nena Barlow is available to drive with me and offer off-roading tips, and we wheel across the trail under the orange glow of the Bob's canvas lid. This is one of my favorites, with its stumpy shape and brightly-colored accessories, and the Bob is a terrific host on the rocks.

Barlow, however, prefers the Industrial Blue Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe . She appreciates the air suspension, sway-bar disconnect, and 20-inch metallic matte wheels wrapped in 33-inch BFG mud-terrain rubber. I like the custom upholstered seats with houndstooth inserts, which chief designer Mark Allen says is modeled after a jacket the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield would have worn.

Of course, I didn't miss a chance to drive the Kaiser Jeep M725 concept, which started out as a 1967 Kaiser Jeep M725 military ambulance. Custom rock rails protect the body and it rides on 20-inch, eight-lug Black Rhino Armory wheels wrapped in 40-inch tires. As soon as I started it up, my face broke into an ear-to-ear grin. Yes, it off-roads, too.

Culture photo

The population of Moab was 5,366 at the 2020 census, and it swells to at least four times that size during the Easter Jeep Safari. If the Chamber of Commerce members who kicked this event off in 1967 could see it now, they'd surely be astonished and delighted that their idea worked so well. Hotels dot the landscape and Jeep tour companies like Nena Barlow's are seeing steady work.

During Easter Jeep Safari, the general mood in town is of excitement and camaraderie; off-roaders exchange tips on routes and parts. Bilstein hosts a site and a number of wrapped vehicles tool around town, advertising the brand. BFGoodrich hosts a garage right on Main Street and it's open to all. You bring the parts and they'll fix just about anything for you, gratis, whether or not your vehicle is riding on any of the BFGoodrich brand tires . They'll even swap out an engine if they have to, one of the mechanics told me. That's pretty dang generous.

As I leave Moab, I stop at the local rocks and fossils shop for a souvenir in the hopes that it will hold me over until my next visit. I already can't wait for 2023.

Got a tip? Send me a note: [email protected].

5 Things I Learned Rock Crawling Jeeps in Moab

Stephen Elmer

Sometimes I think “off-roader” is not a broad enough term.

Racing through the sand with blistering speed is not the same as going sideways around a snowy corner or crawling slowly over slick rocks. Each one of these is considered off-roading, but really, each is vastly different.

And none more so than rock crawling.

The thought occurred to me while attending a trail ride hosted by BF Goodrich tires at the 2017 Easter Jeep Safari held in Moab, Utah, each year. I’ve spent years playing in the dirt, but my goal has always been to drive as fast as possible over things in a vain attempt to feel like a World Rally Champion.

The “crawling” part of the equation was quickly apparent when our convoy of about 20 vehicles set out for “Hell-dorado,” marked as an expert trail by the folks at Area BFE, the facility that hosted this trail ride.

As our convoy descended on the first impassable-looking piece of the trail, I began to understand the draw of this event.

{"attachment_id":"482507"}

1. teamwork.

First of all, you very quickly learn that, like with most things, it is the people that make this activity so enjoyable. Because the convoy moves slower than a snail, most folks mill about while each obstacle is tackled one at a time, and everyone needs to be ready to help.

Right away, a challenge arose from a tight squeeze between two boulders that was sure to scrape and dent the upper roof corners of each rig trying to pass. While some of the rock crawlers with bare roll cages didn’t mind some scraping, a few of the nicer rigs were worth saving. For these rigs, a team of bystanders would tie a strap to one side of the roll cage and pull, tug-of-war style, to save it from damage.

5 things i learned rock crawling jeeps in moab

Spotters are also constantly necessary, and relying on a spotter takes trust. As much as each person here has their own crawling rig, the entire endeavor is really about making sure everyone makes it through as safely as possible.

That sense of teamwork instantly bonds groups of people and is certainly a draw towards this type of off-roading .

2. Come Prepared

It’s almost cliche now, but after seeing these rock crawlers in action, being prepared and having the right equipment for the trail can’t be stressed enough. The final obstacle, a nearly vertical climb, required many of the rigs to winch up and over, with no chance of actually driving over it. Without a capable winch , many of the Jeeps would have been stuck, just one example of the crucial equipment on a trail like this.

Hauling tools, safety equipment, straps, jacks and more with you on the trail can be the difference between a horrible day and a great one, so come prepared.

{"attachment_id":"482509"}

3. choose your rig, know your trail.

While getting into unknown situations can be half the fun of off-roading sometimes, in the crawling world, it’s always better to know exactly what trail you’ll be hitting to make sure your vehicle can make it through.

A classic example of this on our trail ride was knowing the limits of your wheelbase. While trying to climb “The Waterfall,” a near vertical rock face, a long wheelbase is absolutely crucial, as the front tires are able to get up over the lip and pull the rears up. A few rigs were successful, but many others had to winch their way over, as there was no chance a vehicle with a short wheelbase was going to make it.

5 things i learned rock crawling jeeps in moab

On the flip side, a long wheelbase means a worse breakover angle, leading to the middle of your rig getting hung up on rocks and obstacles more often. I watched a particularly long crawler get all four of its wheels off the ground at the same time because of a large rock, while the shorter machines in the bunch crawled right up and over without getting stuck.

ALSO SEE: Off-Roading 101: What Are Approach and Departure Angles?

Installing armor is also advisable. If crawling is something you want to do as a hobby, your vehicle will be banged up in a hurry, so installing skid plates, rock sliders and steel bumpers will help keep you on the trail without your rig getting too damaged.

4. Must Trust

You have to trust and listen to the people you are wheeling with, especially when rock crawling. Having sets of eyes all around your vehicle is necessary to watch each wheel as it progresses over the rocks. So be prepared to give up some control and trust the other folks on the trail.

5. tires are everything.

This is certainly not a revelation, but watching these big crawlers pull themselves up rock shelves with nothing but the sidewall gave me a whole new appreciation for what the four rubber donuts actually do for each and every one of us. And if you really want to push them by rock crawling, you’ll need a good set of tires that are not only durable but also offer maximum grip.

When crawling, it’s best to air-down the tires, and a set of beadlock wheels can also go a long way to making sure you climb over everything on the trail.

Jeep continues to bring jaw-dropping concept vehicles to the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. After a tumultuous year, 2021 brings us the 2020 Jeep concepts that never made it to Moab last year.

For 2021, the EJS Jeep concept vehicles include everything from electric to diesel: a two-door battery-electric with a manual transmission, an orange Wrangler with all the latest OEM upgrades, a throwback beach machine, and a diesel Gladiator pickup rock crawler.

Along with those four new 2021 EJS Jeep concept vehicles, there will also be three concepts Jeep built for the 2020 EJS that never happened. These include the overland-style Jeep Gladiator Farout, the V8-powered Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 concept, and the Jeep Gladiator Top Dog mountain bike truck.

2021 Easter Jeep Safari Jeep concept vehicles

Each of these concept Jeeps is impressive, but the Magneto, Farout, and Top Dog concepts stand out to us. Let’s dig into what these Jeep concepts are all about.

And if you’re near Moab from March 27 to April 4, be sure to stop in and check ’em out.

2021 Easter Jeep Safari Concept Vehicles

2021 Jeep Magneto Concept

The green off-road future is here in the form of Jeep’s first-ever battery-electric vehicle (BEV), the Jeep Magneto Concept. While this 70kWh, 285-horsepower, 273-pound-feet-of-torque EV Jeep two-door remains just a concept, you can rest assured that it’s actually a glimpse at a not-too-distant production Wrangler.

This unique, electric-motor Wrangler Rubicon even has a manual transmission, which isn’t something you see on many EVs. By rowing your own gears, you’re able to have the ultimate control when tackling rough terrain. Bonus: This system won’t stall when you’re changing gears.

2021 Jeep Magneto Concept

Max torque will prove near-instantaneous as well, which is perfect for rock crawling this 2-inch lifted Jeep on 35-inch tires. A roll cage, rock rails, skid plates, and a steel bumper with WARN winch let you know this Jeep is ready for real off-road adventures.

Best of all, the battery system is waterproofed. So the Magneto retains the stock Jeep’s 30-inch water fording ability.

2021 Jeep Orange Peelz Concept

2021 Jeep Orange Peelz Concept

Throw the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) catalog at a two-door Wrangler Rubicon, and a few custom parts as well, and you have the Orange Peelz concept. This V6 Wrangler is all about open-air, off-road fun.

2021 Jeep Orange Peelz Concept interior

A custom, removable, one-piece Freedom Top glass sunroof and prototype JPP half-doors are sure to bring the sights and sounds of the world around you into this Jeep concept.

Add in some big 37-inch MT tires, ditch lights, custom rock rails, and prototype metal fender flares, and you’ve got a seriously off-road-capable Jeep. Oh, and the Orange Peelz concept even has Mopar’s new windshield, made of Gorilla Glass — just like your iPhone.

2021 Jeepster Beach Concept

2021 Jeepster Beach Concept

Jeep carries a long, storied history, and it always creates a single concept to pay homage to that past. For 2021, we get the Jeepster Beach concept.

Based on a 1968 Jeepster Commando and built on a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, this restomod is one heckuva head-turner! A bright-red interior somehow plays really well with the bright, two-tone paint job. Low-back bucket seats, a roll-cage, and zero carpeting help bring the beach cruiser vibe.

Under the Jeepster Beach concept’s hood sits a tuned version of the Wrangler 2.0L four-cylinder, now putting out 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This concept rolls on 35-inch tires, turned through an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4:1 transfer case.

2021 Jeep Red Bare Concept

2021 Jeep Red Bare Concept

To showcase the latest EcoDiesel Gladiator truck, Jeep created the Red Bare concept. Jeep loaded this rock crawler pickup with all the latest JPP parts. Underneath, you have rock rails, skid plates, and Dana 44 axles with 4.88 gears. The Red Bare rolls on 37-inch MT tires, made possible by a 2-inch lift.

2021 Jeep Red Bare Concept interior

The real story here, though, is the factory half-doors and soft top. These parts help showcase the open-air fun built into this Gladiator’s chassis, just like all Wranglers.

A flannel theme inside the truck, along with bright-red paint and accents, make this truck stand out from the crowd. And matte-black graphics and gold accents bring some class to this ready-for-adventure Jeep truck.

2020 EJS Concepts Make Their Debut

Sure, the new concepts this year are cool, especially the electric Magneto. But the real show-stoppers for us are those 2020 concepts that never actually made it out into the wild — until now. Because of the global pandemic, the 2020 Easter Jeep Safari event didn’t happen.

Of course, Jeep had already made its concept vehicle for that show. The 2020 EJS concepts included the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392,  Jeep Gladiator Farout , and Jeep Gladiator Top Dog. The Wrangler 392 even made it to production and should hit dealer lots soon.

2020 Jeep Gladitor Farout Concept

2020 Jeep Gladitor Farout Concept

The Gladiator Farout concept is Jeep’s vision of the ultimate overland pickup and an encore to 2019’s Wayout concept . It utilizes an EcoDiesel engine to offer impressive range (425-plus miles), fuel-efficiency, and payload capacity that can handle overland upgrades.

The hot ticket on this vehicle is a full living system in the truck bed. An AT Overland Habitat pop-top truck topper offers sleeping for four and covered standing room in the truck bed when deployed. The back of the truck is wood-lined, fully lit, has hanging storage, built-in seats and table, and offers a pull-out fridge and stove.

An integrated roof rack even allows you to carry your kayaks and bikes on your overland adventures.

Of course, the Farout concept also has all kinds of off-road capability upgrades as well. Think 2-inch lift, 37-inch tires, a 12,000-pound winch, rock rails, and off-road shocks. Plaid seat inserts, blue leather, orange stitching, and custom paint complete the Farout look.

2020 Jeep Top Dog Concept

2020 Jeep Top Dog Concept

If you like hot dogs after your mountain biking, then the Jeep Top Dog concept is for you. Yep, this Jeep Gladiator pickup has a flatbed and canopy system on it, with an electric hot dog roller grill built in. Besides that marketing gimmick, this concept truck is all business. That means 37-inch tires, a snorkel, lots of armor, a 2-inch lift, steel fender flares, two winches, ditch lights, and more.

The real key is the plethora of Rhino rack roof rack systems on the Top Dog. These systems create room to carry plenty of mountain bikes, traction boards, tools, extra fuel, and more.

Jeep Adventure Concepts

All of these vehicles are both show and go, which is impressive for concept vehicles. Jeep will actually hit the trails with these concepts during Easter Jeep Safari and even let some journalists drive them on the trails.

We can’t help but dream of a battery-electric version of the Farout concept truck loaded with kayaks and bikes. That sort of dream vehicle isn’t all that far off in the distance.

We’re excited about our electric future, especially if we can still row our own gears and have enough range to confidently get way off the beaten path.

For its yearly pilgrimage to Moab, Utah, the Jeep brand tends to create numerous one-off concept vehicles, some of which portend future product. As is part and parcel of the company’s PR game, rafts of teaser photos are released prior to the event, and this year is no different—the first just dropped early March.

Jeep teases 2024 Easter Safari builds—is that a 4xe Gladiator? Back to video

UPDATE March 14, 2024: Mid-March saw two more “trail markers” and three more teaser images added to the roster, with the most intriguing featured top of page, here. The red-and-white scheme is an interesting choice, but what’s really piqued our curiosity is the blurry ‘392’ emblazoned on that side stripe, the nifty extractors on the top and rear of the fender, and the black power-dome-style bulge on the hood. It came accompanied by the announcement this year’s Easter Safari themes would be “legendary off-road capability, unrivaled heritage, bold colour palettes, and powerful propulsion suited for any adventure.”

A few days later, Jeep promised Moab would see “two new, one-of-a-kind, rock-crawling, terrain-traversing concept vehicles” that “will take four-wheeling to the next level,” and sure enough teased two concepts—we’re getting retro vibes off the brown open-top Wrangler, but can’t make out much from the clipped shot of the green Cherokee. We won’t have to wait much more than a week, now, to figure out what each of these concepts are all about, though. Expect another update here, soon. Our original story continues below.

Appearing by way of an artist’s rendering is the front third of a Willys trim, though there are a few – ahem – Easter eggs in the photo worth ruminating upon. First, this appears to be a 4xe model, with the narrowest sliver of charging port visible on the far right of the photograph. Jeep recently made the hybrid powertrain available on this trim (not to mention the Sport S) for Wrangler, so there’s no news with that observation. However, there’s a chance this is actually the front end of a Gladiator, a model which has been promised but does not yet offer hybrid power. We’ll see.

Elsewhere, we spy a hood which, instead of having the trim level spelled out in vinyl stickers, has the “Willys” moniker hammered right into the metal. This is a neat detail, but would ultimately cost a relative fortune on production lines. There also seems to be more body-colour trim – shown here in what looks like High Velocity – around its headlamps compared to a stock Willys, but that could be chalked up to artistic license taken by the illustrator. Extremely knobby tires poke forth from the wheelwell, a good clue that this rig, like most built for Easter Jeep Safari, will have outrageous off-road suspension modifications.

For those unfamiliar, the Easter Jeep Safari is an annual off-road soirée held in Moab, Utah to celebrate all things Jeep, with trail rides and day-long excursions. Originally started by a group of local gearheads, it continues to be technically hosted by Red Rock 4-Wheelers Inc., one of the local 4×4 clubs in Moab.

As a large gathering of Jeep fans, the automaker itself has decided to co-opt the event as a type of rolling automotive show, using it to trot out concept vehicles and teasers of future product. This makes a dose of good sense, since thousands of Jeep faithful are in attendance, but the brand generally makes sure not to consume the event, and tends to give plenty of credit to local organizers.

Easter Jeep Safari kicks off March 23, 2024, and runs for nine days until the last day of the month, thanks to a quirk of the calendar placing Easter way early this year.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

Plus, it's a great way to get some public input on stylistic themes, accessories, and functional add-ons that might already be in consideration for production. Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

moab jeep safari rock crawler

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

moab jeep safari rock crawler

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

moab jeep safari rock crawler

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

moab jeep safari rock crawler

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

moab jeep safari rock crawler

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

moab jeep safari rock crawler

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

moab jeep safari rock crawler

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

Here’s What We Know About the Moscow Concert Hall Attack

The assault on a popular concert hall was the deadliest act of terrorism in the Russian capital in more than a decade.

Emergency vehicles outside the glass-fronted Crocus City Hall building by night, some with long ladders up to its roof.

  • Published March 23, 2024 Updated March 25, 2024

An attack Friday at a popular concert venue near Moscow killed 137 people, the deadliest act of terrorism the Russian capital region has seen in more than a decade.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack; American officials have attributed it to ISIS-K, a branch of the group.

Russian officials and state media have largely ignored ISIS’s claim of responsibility and instead suggested that Ukraine was behind the violence. Ukraine has denied any involvement, and American officials say there is no evidence connecting Kyiv to the attack.

Russian authorities have detained at least 11 people, including four migrant laborers described as Tajik citizens who have been charged with committing a terrorist act, but they have not identified most of the accused assailants or their motives.

Here’s a closer look at the attack.

What happened?

The gunmen entered the Crocus City Hall building, one of the biggest entertainment complexes in the Moscow area, with capacity of more than 6,000, shortly before a sold-out rock concert was scheduled to start. Armed with automatic rifles, they began shooting.

Using explosives and flammable liquids, Russian investigators said, they set the building ablaze, causing chaos as people began to run. The fire quickly engulfed more than a third of the building, spreading smoke and causing parts of the roof to collapse. Russia’s emergency service posted a video and pictures from after the fire showing charred seating and firefighters working to remove debris.

Russian law enforcement said that people had died from gunshot wounds and poisoning from the smoke.

At least three helicopters were dispatched to extinguish the fire or to try to rescue people from the roof. The firefighters were only able to contain the fire early on Saturday; the emergency service said it was mostly extinguished by 5 a.m.

The search for survivors ended on Saturday, as details about the victims began to emerge. Many of the more than 100 people injured in the attack were in critical condition.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, a top law-enforcement body, said on Sunday that 137 bodies had been recovered from the charred premises, including those of three children. It said that 62 victims had been identified so far and that genetic testing was underway to identify the rest.

Where are the assailants?

Attackers were able to flee the scene. Early on Saturday, the head of Russia’s top security agency, the F.S.B., said that 11 people had been detained in the connection to the attack, including “all four terrorists directly involved.” The four men were arraigned late Sunday and charged with committing a terrorist act, according to state and independent media outlets, and they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The press service of the Basmanny District Court said that the first two defendants, Dalerjon B. Mirzoyev and Saidakrami M. Rachalbalizoda, had pleaded guilty to the charges.

It did not specify any plea from the other two — Muhammadsobir Z. Fayzov, a 19-year-old barber and the youngest of the men charged, and Shamsidin Fariduni, 25, a married factory worker with an 8-month-old baby — according to Mediazona, an independent news outlet.

The men looked severely battered and injured as they appeared in court, and videos of them being tortured and beaten while under interrogation circulated widely on Russian social media.

There were signs that Russia would try to pin blame on Ukraine, despite the claim of responsibility by the Islamic State. The F.S.B. said in a statement that the attack had been carefully planned and that the terrorists had tried to flee toward Ukraine.

How are Russians responding?

President Vladimir V. Putin, who claimed victory in a presidential election last weekend, did not publicly address the tragedy until Saturday afternoon. In a five-minute address to the nation, he appeared to be laying the groundwork to blame Ukraine for the attack, claiming that “the Ukrainian side” had “prepared a window” for the attackers to cross the border from Russia into Ukraine.

But he did not definitively assign blame, saying that those responsible would be punished, “whoever they may be, whoever may have sent them.”

The attack has punctured the sense of relative safety for Muscovites over the past decade, bringing back memories of attacks that shadowed life in the Russian capital in the 2000s.

Russia observed a national day of mourning on Sunday as questions lingered about the identities and motives of the perpetrators. Flags were lowered to half-staff at buildings across the country.

What we know about the Moscow concert hall attack claimed by ISIS in Russia

By Haley Ott

March 26, 2024 / 9:35 AM EDT / CBS News

It was Friday evening in Moscow when gunmen burst into Crocus City Hall, an entertainment complex on the outskirts of Russia's capital, where a rock concert by the group Picnic was about to take place. Video showed at least four people opening fire in the building's foyer before entering the hall itself and continuing to shoot.

Russian authorities said the attackers then set fire to the hall using flammable liquid. Despite helicopters dropping water over the building, it took 10 hours to extinguish the flames.

The March 22  attack lasted about 20 minutes, and in that time, at least 137 people were killed and at least 60 others critically wounded, CBS News partner network BBC News reported. Here's what we know:

Who carried out the Moscow attack?

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, released a statement on Friday claiming responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group issued another statement the following day that cast the raid as part of ISIS' ongoing war on countries it claims are fighting against Islam.

In a first for ISIS, the statement released by the group's media propaganda operation attributed the attack to its Russia branch, which it had never identified as such. Previous attacks had been attributed to ISIS in the Caucasus, referring to a broader region that encompasses part of southern Russia, but also some other nations such as Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

APTOPIX Russia Shooting

A U.S. intelligence official told CBS News that American agencies had intelligence confirming ISIS was responsible, and said the U.S. had no reason to doubt the claims made by the group.

About 14 hours after reports of shooting began, Russia's Federal Security Service said 11 suspects had been arrested, four of whom it accused of being directly involved in the attack.

On March 24, four suspects between the ages of 19 and 32 — identified as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Muhammadsobir Fayzov — appeared in a Russian court showing signs of severe beatings . They were charged with acts of terrorism. Russia's state news agency said the four men were from Tajikistan.

There has been suspicion, despite the group's own claim that a domestic Russian branch of ISIS carried out the attack, that its Afghanistan division,  ISIS-Khorasan or ISIS-K , was behind the carnage. That suspicion came largely due to warnings issued by the U.S. in the weeks ahead of the attack, and Russian officials claiming to have thwarted other operations planned by ISIS-K in Russia even more recently.

U.S. officials have not said which branch of ISIS they believe carried out the attack, but they have strongly refuted claims from Russian President Vladimir Putin that there may have been some involvement by Ukraine , a neighboring country that Russia invaded more than two years ago, sparking a full-scale, ongoing war.

Ukraine has also denied  any involvement in the attack.

In addition to the previously unheard of Russia branch being named as the perpetrators, the Moscow attack also appeared to deviate from most ISIS assaults in that the terrorists fled the scene. Most violent attacks carried out by the group see their operatives fight arriving law enforcement personnel to the death, rather than being captured or fleeing.

What did the U.S. warn about in Russia?

The assault in Moscow came two weeks after the U.S. warned of a potential attack targeting large gatherings in the Russian capital. The U.S. Embassy in Moscow had publicly advised Americans to stay away from events, including concert venues, because of the potential for a terrorist attack.

The U.S. provided intelligence to Russia regarding the potential for an attack under the American intelligence community's "Duty to Warn" requirement.

"In early March, the U.S. government shared information with Russia about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow," National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement. "We also issued a public advisory to Americans in Russia on March 7. ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack. There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever."

Last week, Putin dismissed the warnings, saying "recent provocative statements by a number of official Western structures about the possibility of terrorist attacks in Russia... resembles outright blackmail and an intention to intimidate and destabilize our society."

"ISIS bears sole responsibility for this attack," U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement. "There was no Ukrainian involvement whatsoever."

CBS News' Khaled Wassef and Tucker Reals contributed to this report.
