Boat Cruise. Beach. Harbor views. Shelling. Shark Teeth.

Morris Island is your gateway to relaxation without driving out to the barrier islands.

Enjoy a naturalist-led excursion aboard one of our Coast Guard-certified vessels, departing from our Shem Creek dock. Bottlenose dolphins, Eastern brown pelicans, and – in the summertime- manatees will greet us as we head down Shem Creek and out into the Charleston Harbor.

As we cruise through the harbor, you’ll experience unmatched views of the downtown skyline, Ravenel Bridge, Fort Sumter and other iconic landmarks. Reaching the island, you’ll depart directly onto the beach!

Trust a published paleontologist to identify your fossil treasures!

Ashby Gale is the owner and primary tour guide for Charleston Fossil Adventures, LLC. Prior to founding CFA, Ashby served as the Interpretive Park Ranger at Edisto Beach State Park where he curated their fossil collection for three years.

From 2014-2020, Ashby worked with his parents on publishing  A Beachcomber's Guide to Fossils  (University of Georgia Press), a full-color field guide with over 1200 photographs of common beach fossils found from Texas to Florida, and north to New Jersey.

Ashby has presented on his research both regionally and internationally at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, Geological Society of America, and Southeastern Association of Vertebrate Paleontology conferences. Ashby is currently the president of the Palmetto Paleontological Society.

PRAISE & PRESS

"Has there ever been a better name for a paleontologist from Charleston than Ashby Gale? No, no there has not." ~K. Egan

This was the best part of the day: Ash himself.

[My daughter found] a very rare tooth. So rare that Ashby didn't have one in his own collection, so rare that it wasn't pictured on his reference card, so rare that he whooped just a little bit when she shyly showed him.

Suddenly, we felt like paleontologists, too.

Kerry Egan Writer: featured on CNN, PBS, NPR

"To be able to have that connection with an extinct animal drives that fascination.”

Gale is no stranger to fossil-finding. It’s a love he’s made a career of as a paleontologist and the founder of Charleston Fossil Adventures.

Lindsey Liles Garden and Gun Magazine

The outfitter helps people legally find Charleston’s abundant fossils—the keyword being “legal.” Anyone can use a bucket and a shovel, which can destroy our fragile rivers and navigable waterways.

That kind of dig is illegal, and Gale, a paleontologist, is always mindful of the ecology around him when searching for fossils.

Shark Tooth Hunting on Morris Island, South Carolina

As we planned for our trip to Charleston, we found one activity that we really wanted to do — shark tooth and fossil hunting on the uninhabited beaches of Morris Island.

Nerd out with me for just a moment!

Morris Island sits north of Folly Island and south of Fort Sumter and is known for its red-and-white-striped Civil War-era lighthouse.

Morris Island is a barrier island, which means it’s basically a huge sandbar. South Carolina has tons of barrier islands ( 35 to be exact ), and these islands protect the coast by taking the brunt of the ocean’s ravages—that’s why shark teeth, bits of ancient indigenous pottery, and sea glass constantly wash ashore.

South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources manages the island and works to preserve this natural ecosystem. Camping and development are prohibited, and the island is only reachable by boat.

Only a select few tour companies have access to the island – including our guide, Captain Mike of Folly Boat Tours . We had to reschedule our trip a few times due to the rain and the tide, and for a minute we worried this excursion just wouldn’t work out. But Captain Mike kept working with us.

Zoomin’ through the marsh

We met Mike at a small marina in Folly Beach at 10 a.m. on an absolutely perfect day. He loaded us into his skiff and we set off across the water, pointing out the fascinating features of the marshy inlets along the way. Honestly, the 20-minute boat ride in the cool, tranquil morning was worth the trip.

Once we made landfall on Morris Island, Mike gave us a rundown on what to look for—different types of shark teeth, shark and tuna vertebrae, sea glass, fossils, and shards of pottery.

It took us a while to get the hang of it, or maybe there just weren’t many treasures in the first half-mile or so of the trip, but before long we started finding the good stuff. Captain Mike struck out ahead, occasionally calling us to places where teeth were likely hiding.

A-hunting we will go

It seemed like once we found the first few, our eyes knew better what to look for. We found sharp, gleaming, tiny teeth and palm-sized Megalodon teeth. We found several of the bizarre-looking vertebrae. We found an abundance of whole sand dollars and conch shells.

I’m originally from South Carolina, though I’ve only been back once since I was 10. My dad served in the Navy, who stationed him at Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston. My parents moved back to Mississippi and split up a few years later, and my mom still has jars of shells from those years. I remember our time there in flashes and in songs my mother would play while she tended to the house - Fleetwood Mac and Simon & Garfunkel. Now I have my own jar of shells and my daughter, her own memories.

We didn’t cover the entire three-and-a-half-mile stretch of the island, but in no way did we feel like the trip was cut short. My husband and I are the type to take our time. If we visit a museum, we read every plaque and explore every room. About three miles in, Captain Mike turned us around.

The sun had risen high, the morning evaporated and replaced by the midday heat. On the walk back, the tide had gone out significantly, providing an entirely different experience and new tide pools to search. By the time we made it back to Mike’s skiff, we’d packed a fanny pack and a backpack full of goodies.

Pleased with our haul, we settled in for the return trip. The ride back would be eventful in itself: we saw several birds and a dolphin even followed us alongside the skiff for a while. Seriously, it was almost close enough to reach out and touch!

a dolphin fin just above water

Pulling into the dock, we felt satisfied and hungry! Captain Mike pointed us to LoLo’s , which we’d noticed on our way in. By this time, it was around 2:30, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves, and we indulged in a cocktail and a massive platter of steamed shrimp, crab, corn, and potatoes.

Our rating:

Five out of five stars!

Morris Island was a cool escape from Charleston’s hustle and bustle. It’s a surreal place to explore, and the timing was perfect. Not too early, not too late, not so long that we got too tired (or hangry). Of course, actually finding a few treasures didn’t hurt either, and I can’t praise Captain Mike enough for being so kind and hospitable.

This trip is for you if:

You have some flexibility in your trip schedule. Visits to the island depend on the weather and the tides. Depending on the day, your treasure-hunting time slots may vary, from 7 in the morning to late afternoon. As we mentioned, scheduling our excursion was kind of a moving target.

You’re down for 3-4 hours of walking. Make no mistake, this is a lot of walking, searching, and meticulously picking through detritus to find teeth, etc., in the full sun.

You have kids aged 9 and up. Our kiddo is 16, but she is not very outdoorsy, yet she loved this excursion. However, note the previous bullet point. There is virtually no shade on the island, so keep that in mind if your young explorers have a particularly short battery.

You’re a nature or history nerd enthusiast like us. Morris Island’s lighthouse is one of the first lighthouses built after Europeans made landfall on this continent. It played a role in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War and even saw pirate activity. For a timeline of the lighthouse’s history, click here. Check out more info about the island’s history and ownership here.

What to bring:

Sun protection: Sunscreen, hats, sun shirts, sunglasses, etc.

Water-friendly shoes: IF you wear shoes. We wore some old sneakers, but definitely wear something comfortable that you don’t mind getting soaked.

Snacks: plenty of water and trail mix/granola, or some other easy-to-nom snack. Don’t plan on a picnic or anything like that. We’d advise having a real meal before you go.

Something to carry your finds in. We had two backpacks and a fanny pack, but it’d be handy to have some rags to wrap delicate items (like sand dollars), and some ziplock bags to keep the sand from getting everywhere.

Cash for a tip. Up to you, but we felt compelled to show our appreciation for our guide.

Other ways to experience Morris Island

Charleston Outdoor Adventures offers a Charleston Marsh Eco Boat Cruise with a stop at Morris Island * .

Thriller Charleston offers catamaran tours that let you see five forts and two lighthouses. Tours are one hour and can be pretty wet and rocky.

Sea Kayak Carolina provides daily 5-6 hour kayak tours for those with open water kayak experience.

If you want to kayak on your own, you can put in at the creeks to the rear and south of the island. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into with the tides and all that.

The James Island County Park is the closest camping spot to Morris Island, if you’re one to throw up a tent!

ADULTS – 59.00/CHILDREN – 36.00/UNDER 2  – NO CHARGE

The Morris Island tour is 3+ Hours total, with 90 minutes on Morris Island. So…what is the Morris Island boat tour all about? First things first-It’s a walking tour on Morris Island. Don’t sign up for this if  you aren’t comfortable walking approximately 2/3 of a mile!  Come catch some of the sights in Charleston Harbor.  We’ll pass Fort Sumter,  watch for dolphins on the way out (which usually happens)  and of course we’re gonna stop and tell you about all of it.  Once we land, your guide will then spend the next 90 minutes helping you search for beach treasure, as well and share some  ecology,  tidal mechanics, the benefits of marsh areas and exploring the intertidal zone. You don”t have to walk with your guide, but your chances of finding treasure will go way up if you let us help.

Morris Island is unspoiled, undeveloped and undeniably the ecological jewel of Charleston Harbor. It’s also rich in history, scenery and vibe. Go early enough and we might be the only ones there. Walking down towards “the old Charleston jetty”, reveals a set of rocks that acts like a big filter, and “helps” the treasure wash up on the beach.

411480_427687320608254_688861279_o2223

Shark’s teeth, shells, even live members of the animal kingdom can be found, including sea birds, horseshoe crabs and other creatures of the sea. Your guide will be along to point out and inform you about any and everything you see.

FAQ: Scheduling these trips can be complicated. We’d love to start every day at 9, but it’s not that simple. There are 2 low and 2 high tides every day. To confuse that even more, they scoot forwards about 1 hour every day. So if its high today at 10, its high tomorrow at 11.  That’s why you have to book online for reservations – so that I know you’re going at the best time, and you don’t go home disappointed. Be here 20 minutes prior to your trip. If you are 10 or more minutes late, we we’ll have to reschedule you for another time  You can assume that if I say be there at 9, this really means 8:45. Bring anything you want, coolers, snacks, beer.

Morris Island is spectacular, but not without its hazards . Stay out of the dunes, both for minimizing erosion and the effect on the wildlife, but more importantly for your feet! The interior of Morris Island is  full of brambles, sticker bushes, cactus and the occasional varmint. Also, there are no lifeguards anywhere out on the island, so swimming should be done elsewhere. Currents are strong around Morris Island, so care is urged in water any deeper than your knees.

The Morris Island boat tours is approximately 3+ hours long. Don’t forget to bring your hat and your sunscreen; Carolina summers tend to be HOT, and if you’re not used to it, the sun can do a number on you. Also, bring your camera and a souvenir bag for the shells and sharks teeth you find.

About Morris Island Lighthouse

The Morris Island Lighthouse has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1876. It served as an essential navigational aid for ships entering Charleston Harbor, guiding them safely through the treacherous waters of the area.

The Lighthouse faces an ongoing battle with coastal erosion. Over the years, the relentless forces of the Atlantic Ocean have caused significant erosion, resulting in the lighthouse being abandoned in 1962. Despite the encroaching waters, preservation efforts to protect and preserve the lighthouse as a historic landmark are ongoing.

You know how, sometimes, you book something expecting to be disappointed. This definitely is not one of those times. Josh was a great guide, interacting with all of us, providing great facts about the marsh eco system, and making sure to stop and let us watch the dolphin and birds. Then, we even had a good amount of time (between 45 minutes to an hour) on Morris island finding awesome shells and sand dollars. It isn’t very often that I spend money on something and think it was actually worth more, but that is what I thought after this cruise experience. My wife and I have even already talked about trying to do this again when we can bring our daughter. Mark, September 2019 (Trip Advisor)

Morris Island Tours

The Morris Island Lighthouse at sunset

Undeveloped Morris Island is a popular excursion destination out of Charleston, Folly Beach and the neighboring sea islands, offering a secluded beach, shelling and fossil hunting, and views of the Charleston harbor and the historic Morris Island Lighthouse.

Although little physical trace remains of the island’s role in the Civil War (including one of the first military engagements of that war to employ African-American troops), Morris Island is considered one of the Charleston area’s most important battle sites of that conflict.

A boat is the easiest way to get to the island, and local tour companies offer a variety of excursions that can get you there. Some are open to the public and others are intended only for your group; some tours focus on the nature and ecology of the island and its vicinity, while others provide an opportunity to search for shells, sharks’ teeth and fossils on the beach.

A kayak or paddleboard tour is a more adventurous way to explore the sights of Morris Island, usually departing from the adjacent seafront town of Folly Beach. As these tours require either a reasonable amount of paddling or knowledge of how to handle a boat or board in the surf, at least some prior experience of the sports is advisable, and in some cases, required.

For nearby kayak or paddleboard tours that are suitable for beginners, see details of kayak or paddleboard tours of Folly Island.

We get it, Morris Island is awesome. There’s way more to see than we can access on a two-hr trip, so for the more adventurous we’ll take you to the island, maroon you there for a time period of your choosing, and come rescue you later in the day.

Walk down the beach and see the cliffs carved out of the the old sand dunes and try your luck at sharks tooth hunting towards the northern end of the island.

Because of scheduling this trip is not usually available to book online and is highly subject to boat and captain availability. There is a min. time allotment of 4 hours (i.e. we take you to the island and pick you up at 11:30 or noon). We do our best to accommodate your needs, but keep in mind on busy days this option may not always be available.
