The bi-annual  Newport Secret Garden Tour  opens the gate to a number of private gardens during its return on July 9 - 11 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. "Summer Tour—A New View" as it is titled this season, offers a self-guided walking tour through private gardens at their peak. Primarily designed and maintained by their owners, each garden is a labor of love shared with the community to help raise funds for the arts education programs at Aquidneck Island’s public schools. 

Since 1984, the organizers and supporters of the Secret Garden Tour have been dedicated to enhancing art education and cultural programs in Aquidneck Island’s Public Schools. Funding dozens of programs in music, theater and fine arts for local schoolchildren, to date, the Secret Garden Tour has given more than $1 million to the.public schools. 

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at  secretgardentours.org  for a discounted rate of $20. To control the number of attendees this year, tickets will be sold in sessions, with each day offering two different time-slots: 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM and 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM.

MEMBER EXCLUSIVE: Tour of Newport’s Iconic Blue Garden

Join the RIHS on Thursday, September 14 at 2pm for a private, members-only tour of the Blue Garden, the historic Newport garden designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and the Olmsted Brothers firm. This tour will look at the history of the garden, its landscape, and its recent restoration. Additionally, RIHS Executive Director Dr. Morgan Grefe will connect the design of the Blue Garden to the recent restoration of the Great Lawn of the John Brown House Museum, another Olmsted Brothers property.

Tickets are $20 and extremely limited. Tickets can be purchased by members here .

SAVE THE DATE for the July 2023 Newport Secret Garden Tour "On the Point" !

Join us July 7-9 for self-guided walking tours of private gardens located in historic Newport, Rhode Island. Each tour features about a dozen beautiful gardens. The tours run daily from 10 am. until 4 pm and and tickets are limited with only 450 to be sold for each day. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 day of tour.

In Spring 2014, Conde Nast Traveler Magazine named Newport, Rhode Island “one of the best walking cities in the U.S.” and specifically mentioned the June Secret Garden Tour through the city’s historic Point section as one of the highlights.

Since 1984, the organizers and supporters of The Secret Garden Tour have been dedicated to enhancing art education and cultural programs in Aquidneck Island's Public Schools, funding dozens of programs in music, theater and fine arts for local schoolchildren. To date, The Secret Garden Tour has given more than $1 million to Aquidneck Island students in public schools for art, music, theater and other cultural programming.

The Blue Garden is closed for the season and will reopen June 13, 2024. Tours will be at 11:00, 12:30, and 2:00. Reservations and a fee of $20 per person will be available online beginning May 1, 2024. Thanks to all of you who visited this summer. We hope to see you again. Visitor Information

The Blue Garden is open to groups or individuals who share our love and interest in landscape architecture, garden design, historic preservation, and horticulture. Space is limited. Prior reservations and a payment of $20 per person are required in advance of your visit. For additional information, contact Sarah Vance, Director, [email protected].

• Reservations and payment are made online. Tickets are refundable prior to the date and time of the tour, with a $2.50 processing fee deducted for Eventbrite. Please go to your ticket and “Request a Refund.”  To request an alternate date, please “Request a Refund” for the current date, and proceed to book tickets on the preferred date. We are not able to exchange tickets.
• The garden does not close for rain. In the event of hazardous weather, and the garden is closed, you will be notified and a full refund will be issued.
• Casual photography is permitted and encouraged. Professional photography is not allowed at any time. All photos are for personal use only and never sold or used for commercial purposes.
• We begin in the greenhouse with a short history about the restoration of the garden. 
• Tours are guided, but you are free to walk the garden on your own. This is private property. Please be mindful of the white cones that denote the property lines.
• The lawn paths in the garden are available for wheelchairs.
• Prior to parking, guests may be dropped off at the greenhouse.
• One restroom is available.
• Address and directions to the Blue Garden are sent when tickets are purchased.

18 Things To Do In Newport: Complete Guide To The Timeless Charm Of The Seaside City

N ewport is one of the most beautiful places in all of Rhode Island to visit. Located in Narragansett Bay, this city is situated on Aquidneck Island. Visitors will enjoy the warm sunshine and the beautiful coastal walkways of this city, which is known for its 18th-century architecture, its long maritime history, its art scene, and its many eclectic boutiques. Founded all the way back in 1639, this city was originally created by followers of the Puritan religious reformer Anne Hutchinson. In the 18th century, the city became an important center for maritime trade. Many of the 18th-century buildings remain in the city, which travelers to this area should definitely keep a sharp eye out for! The city was also the site of the famed Battle of Rhode Island in the Revolutionary War.

To this day, Newport remains a center for the US Navy, with the United States Naval War College and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center located there. Not only is the history of this area naval, but it’s also presidential, as well. Both John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower enjoyed summers there during their administrations.

Stop By The Gatsby-Era Mansion: Rosecliff

One of the first things to see while in Newport, Rhode Island, is to stop by the famous Rosecliff Mansion . Located on the prestigious Bellevue Avenue, this Gatsy-inspired mansion is open to the public and works as a museum/time capsule of the area's rich past.

Notably, Rosecliff has also been known as the Hermann Oelrichs House or the J. Edgar Monroe House, so keep an eye out for those alternative names as well. Furthermore, Rosecliff was modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles but smaller and reduced to a basic "H" shape.

Many visitors to the site mention it feeling rather magical, so this is certainly a place to absorb history while also living lavishly for a couple of hours.

One of the more intriguing parts of the Northeast United States is the extravagant architecture, often leaving onlookers speechless. Again, this also doubles as a museum, which is a great way to escape the heat during warmer months in the city.

View The Famous Castle Hill Lighthouse

Something to do while in Newport, Rhode Island, is going to the Castle Hill Lighthouse, located t the end of the historic Ocean Drive. Here, people can witness the structure, which had first been lit in 1890, becoming a staple of the city.

The Castle Hill Lighthouse hosts various tours for people wanting to learn more about it.

Structurally, this lighthouse was built into the nearby rocks, giving it a very historic, charming appearance. This has become a top spot for photography in Newport, with brides, grooms, graduates, and happy families and couples flocking here at sunrise and sunset.

Check Out The International Tennis Hall Of Fame

One unique thing to do in Newport is to visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame . This complex is not only historic but is home to an incredible museum and still hosts tournaments every summer.

This is a very prestigious tennis center in the city, bringing legends of the sport each year. On top of that, the International Tennis Hall of Fame hosts regular events for lovers of the sport.

Like much of Newport, this hall of fame was constructed many decades ago, in 1880, and has withstood the test of time up until now.

Enjoy The Newport Winter Festival

One of the most festive things to do in Newport during the holidays is to stop by the Newport Winter Festival. This typically runs from late November until Christmas and is filled with joy, community, and plenty of lights.

Oddly enough, Newport is known to be an incredibly holiday-friendly city, with the entire city lighting up during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. It's also worth mentioning that this winter festival is in collaboration with local charities, businesses, and donors, all of whom love both the holidays and Newport.

"Christmas by the Sea" is one of the festivals during the month-long winter festivities in the city, so that's one to keep an eye out for when traveling through. The Rhode Island Christmas Festival also occurs in Newport around the same time, bringing even more cheer to the town.

Chock full of restaurants, boutiques, and entertainment, this is the buzzing epicenter of downtown Newport. Since the 18th century, this popular main drag has sported nostalgic bars and eateries offering up anything from oysters, old school arcades, and more.

A delight for the family to stroll on foot down the cobblestones of history, Thames Street is a great starting point for all visitors to Newport. Parking can be difficult, so plan to park further out of town and walk.

Take In The Redwood Library And Athenaeum

The Redwood Library and Athenaeum is one of Newport’s most stunning attractions. With a collection of over 200,000 items, this library is one of the best places in Newport for tourists to stop at on a rainy day.

Visit The Breakers Mansion

The Breakers Mansion is one of the most famous mansions in Newport . Visitors to this mansion will be stunned by the rich décor, the Renaissance Revival architectural style, and the stunning gardens at The Breakers.

The Vanderbilt mansion, The Elms, Marble House, Beechwood - these are all examples of the spectacular opulence of the Gilded Age of mansions in Newport. Everyone who was anyone from The Vanderbilts to the Astors (remember John Jacob Astor from the Titanic?) bought property here.

The Breakers may be the number one visited and most famous of these mansions, but it is no doubt for good reason. The house drips in flapper-era elegance from the chandeliers, gold features, and ornate patterns to the impressive wrought iron staircase in the main hall.

Built for the famous Vanderbilt family in the 1890s, the mansion is one of the best places to tour in Newport. Visitors here can see the stunning interiors and can peruse the rare tree collection that the sprawling garden boasts.

After seeing this mansion, visitors will know why they called the 1890s “The Gilded Age!”

Explore Fort Adams

Military history buffs cannot leave Newport without spending at least one afternoon at Fort Adams . This 200-year-old fort is a great place to learn about US military history, with a collection of historical artifacts that includes seven original cannons from the 19th century.

The Fort is a former United States Army post that was established in 1799 and named after President John Adams, who held office at the time of its construction. At Fort Adams State Park, take a guided or self-guided tour of the fort (ranging from $5-$50 depending on youth, adult, or family package tickets) and visit the quarters of the military who served there the ramparts with views of Newport Harbor, and more.

Youth groups and scouts can even spend the night in tents or in the barracks for a truly up close and personal historic visit.

One popular draw for Fort Adams is the annual Newport Folk Festival. Lovers of Bob Dylan will still remember the story of when Pete Seeger unplugged his very nouveau sound at the Newport Folk Festival many moons ago.

Originally started in 1959, this festival is still happening today. Every summer in late July, The Newport Folk Festival takes place at Fort Adams State Park and features four stages of musicians along with food and vendors.

The fortress is located in the beautiful Fort Adams State Park, which overlooks the ocean.

For those interested in history, taking a tour of the Touro Synagogue is a great way to spend the day. As the oldest synagogue in the United States, this is a great place to learn about Jewish history in the US.

Historically, Rhode Island was one of the safest places for Jewish immigrants to settle in the United States. Built in 1763, the synagogue has beautiful colonial architecture for visitors to enjoy. They can also learn about local history, as well!

Drive Along Ocean Drive

A ten-mile stretch of road, "The Newport Loop," passes all the best sites that Newport has to offer. From the Vanderbilts to Jay Leno, Ocean Drive is where the money lives. Take a scenic drive and pass countless mansions of the rich and famous.

This is known to be one of the best ways to spend time in Newport, even on a rainy afternoon! Whether just passing through or staying the night, a drive along Ocean Drive will satisfy seeing many of the sites from the road.

The Castle Hill Lighthouse is also located at the end of Newport's famed Ocean Drive, so this might be a two-in-one type of outing for travelers.

Go To A Winery or Brewery

Newport Vineyards and Greenvale Vineyards are two of the top vineyards to visit in the area. Offering tastings and opportunities to sip in the sun by the vines, these two wineries are sure to whet any oenophile's appetite for a relaxing wine-filled day. Take A Day Trip To Narragansett

Just across the Jamestown bridge is a quaint seaside haven in itself, waiting for visitors to come to enjoy clam cakes, lobster, scenic lighthouse vistas, and fishing trips. From Newport, it takes about 20-25 minutes by car to reach the quiet town of Narragansett .

Considered the grande dame of all the Newport mansions, The Breakers was no doubt built to impress. The summertime escape of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his family was designed by the Gilded Age's preeminent architect, Richard Morris Hunt, and boasts a classic Italian palazzo design with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace via the self-guided audio tour available in nearly a dozen languages on the Newport Mansions free app, which will come in especially handy if you plan to explore more than one mansion. Take some time to explore the beauty of the 13-acre grounds as well, and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes .

Those with a curiosity of how a mansion of this magnitude worked – after all, The Breakers was considered a modern marvel when completed in 1895 – will enjoy the Beneath The Breakers Tour. This guide-led tour takes you through the boiler room, tunnel and basement. Guests will learn how the home was outfitted with electricity, still considered a novelty during the Gilded Age. Inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles , Marble House is an architectural masterpiece. Made from 500,000 cubic square feet of marble, the mansion was a 39th birthday present from businessman and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva. Rough Point

Standout perk: Rough Point sits at the southern end of Bellevue Avenue, so getting here allows you to enjoy views of both private mansions and those open to the public along the way. The mansion's oceanfront perch offers an uninterrupted view of the beautiful Cliff Walk Bridge, a stone arch bridge across the rocky inlet where Doris Duke would swim regularly.

Though a Gilded Age mansion through and through, Rough Point is perhaps best loved not for its grandeur but for its most famous resident: Doris Duke. The late heiress, collector and philanthropist – dubbed the "richest little girl in the world" when she was born – spent considerable time at Rough Point until her death in 1993. A self-guided audio tour leads visitors here through the art-filled home room by room, highlighting eclectic sculpture, family portraits, centuries-old tapestries, renowned furnishings and many pieces Duke collected as an avid world traveler.

Save the Date: Secret Garden Tour Announces July 2023 Tour Dates

Join the Benefactors of the Arts for the July 2023 Secret Garden Tours. Take a self-guided walking tour through Newport, RI’s historic Point section July 7-9. The tours run daily from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and tickets are limited with only 450 to be sold for each day. In Spring 2014, Conde Nast Traveler Magazine named Newport, Rhode Island “one of the best walking cities in the U.S.” and specifically mentioned The Secret Garden Tour through the city’s historic Point section as one of the highlights. Tickets are now available for the 2023 Tours and can be purchased in advance online at www.secretgardentours.org   for a discounted rate of $25. Since 1984, the organizers and supporters of The Secret Garden Tour have been dedicated to enhancing art education and cultural programs in Aquidneck Island's Public Schools, funding dozens of programs in music, theater and fine arts for local schoolchildren. To date, The Secret Garden Tour has given more than $1 million to Aquidneck Island students in public schools for cultural programs and the arts. Book sale, concerts and more. What to do in Newport County this weekend.

As the weather turns nicer – we hope – the call to do yard work or attend a kids sporting event may be clogging your weekend schedule but there are plenty of other options out there.

Maybe you want to stock up on summer reads or listen to live music or take in some art. Maybe a model train show will help spur some creativity.

These are a sampling of the events taking place this weekend across Newport County to give you more than a honey-do list, so take a look and start making plans.

Friends of Tiverton Libraries book sale

The Friends of Tiverton Libraries will hold a book and bake sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the community room at Tiverton Public Library, 34 Roosevelt Ave. The sale will feature hard and softcover fiction and non-fiction books, and books for children, along with music CDs and movie DVDs and jigsaw puzzles. Most books will be priced at $1 or less, with a few vintage or special items at higher prices. A baked goods table will feature cookies, brownies, breads, cakes and more.

In an effort to reduce inventory, book donations are not being accepted at this time, although donations of baked goods will be accepted between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

All funds raised will be used to support library programming and the purchase of museum and activity passes.  For more information, call the library at 625-6796.

Newport Navy Choristers

The Newport Navy Choristers, under the direction of Lori McDowell will present “Proudly We Sing” on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at St Mary’s Church, 12 William St., Newport.

A non-profit group consisting of many active and retired military service members and their families, the chorus will perform a repertoire of patriotic and popular songs that will appeal to everyone.

The chorus has been performing concerts to benefit local charitable and civic groups since 1953. The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society will be the beneficiary of the proceeds from this performance.

Model train display

The Middletown Public Library, 700 West Main Road, Middletown, is hosting a model train display event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Little Rhody Division, Northeastern Region - National Model Railroad Association will be hosting a model train display with operating model railroads, including T-TRAK and Harry Potter layouts.

This event is free and for all ages.

The doors are wide open on Saturday at the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave., Newport, for a day of family-friendly activities in the galleries. Hands-on art-making, artist demonstrations, drop in educator-led guided tours, live performances, scavenger hunts and more, inspired by the "A Year at Bradley: Representations of Nature, Self, and Symbolism and Arghavan Khosravi exhibitions."

Newport String Project concerts

The Newport String Project presents The Newport County Concert Series featuring The Newport String Quartet: Ealaín McMullin and Kenneth Trotter, violin; Santiago Vazquez-Loredo, viola; Jacob MacKay, cello, on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Colony House, Washington Square, Newport and on Sunday at 2 p.m., at the United Congregational Church, 1 Commons St., Little Compton.

The Newport String Quartet will be performing works by Peter Arnold Heise, Edvard Grieg and Kian Ravaei. The concert will include a performance of a recently rediscovered string quartet by Danish composer Peter Arnold Heise, alongside Edvard Grieg's Nordic masterpiece, String Quartet No 1 in g minor. The concert will also feature "The Little Things" (2023), a musical homage to Emily Dickinson by Iranian-American composer Kian Ravaei.

Grab your hats and slip on your boots — country star Orville Peck ‘s Stampede Tour is right around the corner. Kicking off on May 28, Peck will embark on a 40-plus-date trek across North America, including stops in Asheville, North Carolina, the Hinterland Music Festival in Iowa, and wrapping with back-to-back Brooklyn Paramount shows with Nikki Lane and Vincent Neil Emerson in October.

“I took a break from last year to focus on myself and even though it was a difficult decision at the time, I’m so happy I did,” Peck previously told Rolling Stone when announcing the Stampede trek. “I feel healthier and happier than I’ve ever felt in my life and I cannot wait to get back on the road.”

After announcing the tour, Peck teamed up with country icon Willie Nelson for the track “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other.” “It was his initial idea for us to do the song together and I will forever be grateful for his support,” Peck said. “As an artist who has sometimes felt excluded from the Country music industry, once Willie Nelson wants to work with you, there’s really nothing the country world can say after that.”

That’s not the only duet fans can expect from the star. Peck shared on Instagram that the first volume of his upcoming new album Stampede would also feature songs with Elton John, Noah Cyrus, Midland, Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bu Cuaron, though fans will still have to wait for an official release date for now.
