The Senior Design Expo will be combined for the first time this semester with a new Day of Research, highlighting additional student and faculty research activities in the college.

It’s also a problem for wider communities affected by harmful algal blooms that are fed by common agricultural nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen.

“If it rains within 24 hours of when you spray fertilizer, those chemical run straight off. They leach into the watershed,” said Ethan Altman, a mechanical engineering technology senior who can speak from experience having grown up on his family’s farm near Holgate, Ohio. “That’s a major problem, especially in northwest Ohio with the harmful algal blooms on western Lake Erie. So we’re hoping we can fix it.”

Altman is part of a team of five mechanical engineering technology seniors who share that goal ahead of the College of Engineering’s Senior Design Expo on Friday, April 26.  Their working model of a multipart system designed to better manage agricultural drainage and irrigation will be one of more than 25 self-guided projects on display. Each showcases students’ creativity and ingenuity while tackling a real-world challenge, in some cases in collaboration with local businesses, industries and federal agencies.

A long-standing tradition and a requirement for graduation in the College of Engineering, the Senior Design Expo will be combined for the first time this semester with a new Day of Research, highlighting additional student and faculty research activities in the college.

“The College of Engineering is a leader on campus in research and scholarly activities,” said Dr. Patricia Relue, senior associate dean of research and graduate studies in the College of Engineering and a professor in the Department of Bioengineering. “During the event on Friday, April 26, our team will unveil several new research initiatives to enhance the position of our college in leading large-scale research projects.”

The Senior Design Expo is from noon to 3 p.m. on the first floor of Nitschke Hall. The Day of Research runs concurrently with student research poster presentations from noon to 3 p.m. on the first floor of Nitschke Hall, tours of labs from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the newly renovated North Engineering Building and rapid faculty research presentations followed by a networking reception from 3 to 4 p.m. in North Engineering 2108.

Visitor parking is free between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Area 20. For more information on the event, go to the College of Engineering website .

Altman’s insights into tile drainage informed his senior design project with Thomas Codispoti, Robbie Nicely, Luke Reese and Jacob Stokes. Tile drainage is a technique to remove subsurface water from fields dating back to the ancient Romans. Its name reflects the ceramic tiles that once made up these systems of underground tunnels, although plastic tubing is a more commonly used material today.

The student team developed a system that collects the water that’s removed from the fields via tile drainage in a pond or reservoir, where it waits until moisture sensors placed in the fields indicate crops are getting thirsty. This triggers an automated pump to push the nutrient-rich water back into the field through the same system of “tile” tubing.

Another element of their design addresses the occasional but inevitable situation where heavy rains overflow the reservoir. They propose a filter to capture nitrates and phosphates before the water enters the watershed.

Senior Design Expo guests will see a small-scale working model of their system, with a dirt-filled container representing the field and a bucket representing the reservoir.

Altman, Codispoti, Nicely, Reese and Stokes credit the semester-long experience of building their model as a positive learning opportunity. In working on the automated relationship between the moisture sensor and the pump, for example, Nicely advanced his command of the programming language C++. The whole team worked through trial and error to determine the size of the pump needed for their model.

Stokes described another challenge.

“As engineers our main goal is to problem solve, and one of our problems we had to solve was the budget,” he said. “We had to develop unique ideas, like 3D-printing the fittings on our tile system. The fittings are basically identical to the ones you can buy in a store but making them ourselves helped us reduce the cost.”

Other examples of projects to be on display at the Senior Design Expo include a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to specifically accommodate patients in intensive care units, a billboard to enable advertisers to target passers-by through object-recognition technology and a design for a pedestrian bridge across the Ottawa River in the village of Ottawa Hills.

“The senior design project is a key example of experiential learning in the College of Engineering,” said Dr. Mohammad Elahinia, interim dean of the College of Engineering and a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. “Students also get practical experience from project-based learning, mandatory co-ops and graduate research opportunities.”

The irrigation system team said they see real-world potential for their model.

“I’ve talked to farmers back home about it, and they think they could use it,” Altman said. “So hopefully, one day, we’ll have a company and see this model at full scale.”

ONU Dedicates Durbin-Hileman Softball Stadium

Photo of softball ribbon cutting

With nearly 250 donors and fans in attendance, Ohio Northern University dedicated its new state-of-the-art softball facility – Durbin-Hileman Softball Stadium – on April 27, 2024. The stadium is named in recognition of lead donors and longtime University supporters Melinda (Durbin) Hileman, BA ’87, and David Hileman, BSBA ’86, BSPh ’86.

The stadium is home to the university’s women’s softball team. It features large dugouts, a new scoreboard with updated technology, padded backstop, upgraded press box, permanent bleachers with bucket seating, field lighting, and natural turf.

More than 167 families contributed to the project.

“We are so thankful for Melinda and David Hileman’s ongoing support of the University and our students,” said ONU President Melissa Baumann, Ph.D. “The stadium is just one example of the tremendous impact they’ve had on ONU. Their numerous contributions of both their knowledge and resources are providing the next generation of students with outstanding opportunities for growth and development both on the field and in the classroom.”

The Hilemans met on campus, where they were highly involved as leaders in student organizations, as letter winners, and as athletes in multiple sports. Melinda Hileman is a member of the ONU Athletics Hall of Fame, and David Hileman is the 2022 recipient of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Their gifts have been instrumental in establishing endowments for softball and women’s basketball. In addition, the Hilemans have been generous supporters of academics in their respective colleges and the Northern Fund.

Durbin-Hileman Stadium arguably gives the Polar Bears the best facility in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

“You don't see this caliber of stadium at a lot of Division III institutions,” said head coach Jackie (Mangola) Price, BS '12. “We’re blessed to have this amazing facility for our student athletes. They have worked extremely hard and deserve to have something like this to play on. We are forever indebted to the Hilemans and our other donors for making this possible.”

Current members of the team are excited about the new facility and what it means for the program.

“My teammates and I are very grateful that we are the first to play on this field,” said junior pitcher Ashley Lenser. “This will elevate our program and help attract recruits from all over.”

Junior outfielder Callie Rosser added, “The new field gives us the opportunity to grow as players, and it provides a much better experience for our fans to come support us. It’s going to help ONU Softball continue to dominate for years to come.”

Architects at Fanning Howey in Celina, Ohio, designed the facility. Helms Construction of Findlay was the lead contractor.

Enroll in an Engineering Program

What kind of engineer will you be.

Drone

Unlock a world of possibilities through any of our 14 cutting-edge engineering major programs available on our Columbus campus. As you progress, you'll have the option to select from a range of real-world  and interdisciplinary experiences tailored to delve into your specific interests. These opportunities will empower you to translate your purpose into tangible practice.

Interested in even more hands-on learning? Technology and innovation isn't just found on our Columbus campus. Theory meets practice with our Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (BSET) program, offered exclusively on our regional campuses.

Participation in fundamentals of engineering courses and the admission to major process is only open to students currently enrolled in an engineering or computer science program. See below for more information on your specific pathway and options for securing your spot  in one of our programs.

Prospective students interested in pursuing two degrees at Ohio State, with one in specific engineering programs (Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or Mechanical Engineering), must choose one of these programs during their initial application. Once enrolled, students can later add a second major or degree, either within engineering or from another university program. It's important to note that adding a double major or dual degree in these specified programs later on is not allowed.

For current Ohio State Engineering students, adding a double major or dual degree in the mentioned programs is not permitted. However, they are encouraged to connect with their academic advisor to explore alternative academic opportunities aligned with their specific interests and career goals.

Students wishing to pursue a second major or degree in any of the other 10 available engineering programs may do so by following the procedures outlined in the Current Engineering Students or Current Students Outside of Engineering sections below.

Completing Two Engineering Programs

While students are allowed to pursue dual degrees in two engineering or computer science majors, it's important to note that they may only choose one from the list of Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or Mechanical Engineering. Pursuing two programs from this list simultaneously is not permitted. The college does not generally recommend completing two engineering degrees (except for Aviation and Computer Science). The job market tends to favor individuals with a bachelor's degree in a single engineering discipline. Instead, students with diverse interests are encouraged to explore technical areas through a minor or certificate program, avoiding the additional time commitment needed for two degrees. Additionally, considering graduate degrees (MS or PhD) is suggested, where changing disciplines is both possible and beneficial.

Procedures for Enrolling in an Engineering Program

Admitted students are welcome to change into all engineering programs through May 15 (the acceptance fee deadline). After May 15, students will not be permitted to switch into Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer and Information Science, or Mechanical Engineering programs. Students are permitted to change into any other available engineering major through the first Friday of their first semester.

  • Until May 15: Contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions
  • After May 15 and before your orientation date: Contact First Year Experience
  • During or after your orientation date: Contact [email protected]

Students starting at Ohio State in the spring semester may change into all engineering programs before the first day of classes . Students should contact the  Office of Undergraduate Admissions  if they are wishing to change before attending orientation, and contact  [email protected]  if they are wishing to change after attending orientation.

After the first week of classes, students will need to follow the procedures for current students (see the  Current Engineering Students or Current Students Outside of Engineering sections).

Transfer Students

Transfer students wishing to enroll in an engineering program for their first semester are required to meet the college's transfer eligibility requirements of having more than 30 semester credit hours and a GPA at your previous institution of 3.0 or higher, and have completed college-level calculus (Math 1151 or equivalent).
