Tooth and Nail Brewing Company, beer

Ottawa’s hopping craft beer scene

Home to over four dozen independent breweries that are getting attention around the world, Ottawa is a top destination for craft beer lovers. But don’t take our word for it – come and taste for yourself! Whether you hop on a brewery bus tour, attend beer events or sip suds in a local pub, there are plenty of fun and tasty ways to whet your whistle in Canada’s capital!

Crafty breweries

You’ll find Ottawa’s eclectic breweries in trendy neighbourhoods, industrial parks or rural areas. Some produce traditional ales and lagers while others focus on IPAs, sours and even gluten-free beer. Their marketing can be funky or historical and hey sometimes create their own equipment and donate brewing by-products to local farms. Ottawa breweries also support each other and their communities in ways that make you feel good when drinking local beer!

Here a just a few Ottawa-area breweries that are worth toasting:

  • Dominion City Brewing Co.  - Canada’s first Kickstarter-funded brewery is located in a suburb just east of downtown Ottawa. Dominion City collaborates with Ontario beverage makers, food producers and restaurants to organize pop-up events that support various causes.
  • Beau’s Brewing Co.  - One of the leaders of Ottawa’s modern craft brewing craze, this family brewery (now employee-owned) opened in 2006 in a quaint village between Ottawa and Montreal. Beau’s collaborates with international breweries as well as individuals like Canadian comedian Tom Green. The brewery also launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a women-run brewery in Rwanda.
  • Kichesippi Beer Co.  - This brewery loves to tell Ottawa stories. It’s named after the word the Algonquin people used to describe the Ottawa River as “Great River”; it gives most of its beers Ottawa-related names; it produced a specific brew for the 100 th  anniversary of the Bytown Museum; and although Kichesippi focuses on traditional beer styles, it also gives its staff the opportunity to produce any type they like.

Craft beer-friendly restaurants and bars

Restaurants and bars all over the city proudly support local as well as international independent brewers. Here are a few places where you’ll feel right at home ordering a pint, can or bottle from the local craft beer list, or requesting that hard-to-find favourite:

  • Elgin Beer Project  on Elgin Street has one of the largest selections of locally brewed beer in the city. And take advantage of their lively patio in the summer!
  • CRAFT Beer Market  at Lansdowne lives up to its name, serving over 100 beers on tap. You’ll normally find over a dozen craft beers from the greater Ottawa area.
  • The Château Lafayette  (known locally as The Laff), located in the ByWard Market neighbourhood, may be Ottawa’s oldest tavern, but its menu is up to date with lots of local beers highlighted for your convenience.
  • Pub Italia  is an Italian-trattoria-meets-Irish-pub in Little Italy which carries over 200 beers from around the world. Select one of the many Ottawa brews listed in their “Beer Bible,” or get your trappist, abbey and obscure beer fix.

Brewery bus tours

While exploring Ottawa’s vibrant neighbourhoods, you can easily visit several Ottawa breweries located within walking distance of each other. But for the ultimate local craft beer experience, let the folks from  Brew Donkey  do the planning and the driving!

Brew Donkey’s half and full-day bus tours take you to multiple craft breweries of all types and sizes throughout Ottawa’s urban and rural areas. At each location, you sip generous samples of craft beer while enjoying behind the scenes access and learning about the brewing process. Need some variety? Choose a tour that stops at a local distillery, game lounge or sports event.

Beer events

Throughout the year, you’ll find local craft beer served at the many events and festivals in the Ottawa region. However, the city also hosts specific events that celebrate your favourite sudsy beverage. Some focus on local brews, while others serve beer, cider and other libations from throughout Ontario, Quebec and beyond. Here are just some of the annual highlights (subject to change):

  • Ottawa Beer Fest  at Lansdowne (May): Large selection of beers, activities, seminars, live music and even a craft beer run.
  • Gatineau Beerfest  at the Place des Festivals Zibi (June): Largest beer event in the region in a stunning indoor and outdoor setting with beer, food and live music.
  • Orleans Craft Beer Festival  in Orléans (June): This outdoor event takes place in a suburb east of downtown. Enjoy some of Ottawa’s best craft beer, food, live music, and more.
  • Dominion City Brewing Co.  hosts many events throughout the year including pop-ups, BBQs and partnerships with other local businesses.
  • Gatineau Winter Beerfest  at the Canadian Museum of History (February): This winter edition of the Beerfest has similar offerings but is held inside the museum.

DIY beer map

You can also plan your own tasty road trip by using the handy  Backroom Deals and Muddy Wheels Trail Map . Whether you’re already in Ottawa or driving from Toronto, Montreal or elsewhere, you can stop at some of the best craft beverage and food purveyors along the way. Just make sure to have a designated driver so you can fully take advantage of the delicious beverages!

To enjoy Ottawa craft beer to its fullest, you’ll need delicious food to go with it! See our list of  romantic Ottawa restaurants  for some inspiration.

Ottawa brewery tour: brew donkey experience.

Brew Donkey, Ottawa Brewery Tours, Ontario craft beer bus tour

Brew Donkey offers professional and fun craft brewery tours all year long! In and around the Ottawa region, they have various themed brewery tours. You can choose between a full day or shorter tour, going east or west of the city, breweries only or include an activity, (fright fest or axe throwing anyone?). Private tours are also available!

The tours typically include samples and a tour at each brewery, transportation all day and a meal or snack in between. You will discover beers or even entire breweries you have not heard of before. It’s fun discovering all the local beer we have available to us in and around Ottawa.

These tours are like being a tourist in your own city, yet with other locals! It won’t be difficult to find something in common with your fellow beer lovers, and you may even leave with a new friend. Celebrating a birthday, a bachelor party, a weekend? The answer is B rew Donkey.

The Breweries East Tour Experience

The main pick up location is at Brew Donkey headquarters, inside the Makers Co. store on Wellington street West. If you ever rode the school bus as a kid, you’ll feel immediate comradery with your tour mates riding along together. Field trip time! The tour guide discusses the upcoming day and sorts out the details, before giving you the general low down on how beer is made. Prepare to feel the excitement already.

Tuque De Broue

The founder and master brewer will have you laughing with his laissez faire attitude combined with a true passion for beer. As he goes through his personal story and process of brewing, he answers your questions and fills your cup of beer. As you enjoy your tastings, the tour moves from the back tour to the brew pub area. Order some beer to go or buy some merch; the need for a Tuque de Brue toque speaks for itself.

By unanimous vote, it is already lunch time back on the bus. Your pre-chosen meal option is handed to you, be it turkey club, chicken parmesan wrap, veggie wrap or salad. And as your morning buzz builds up, so does the excitement.

Tuque de broue brewery

Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company

If you have heard of any of the breweries visited today, it will be Beau’s. You’ve probably heard of their most popular beer, Lug Tread, as well. Definitely the busiest and most popular, Beau’s is one of the original craft breweries in the area, now also one of the largest. Organic ingredients, treatment of employees and charitable efforts all matter to Beau’s. Their annual Oktoberfest celebration is not only a huge party, it is their signature fundraising event.

You will be provided with beer samples again, before taking a tour of the brew house. FYI tours at Beau’s are free even if you’re not on a Brew Donkey tour! You will be in awe of their story of origin, realizing now that their beer is available everywhere in Ontario and some other locations across Canada and the USA. The tour schedules a longer period to hang out here, allowing ample time to get a flight of beer, a pint… or 3 and a snack as well. Check out their vine covered patio that has its own bar!

Snack time on the bus means pretzel time! And you’ll likely be wanting more carbs at this point in the day.

Beau's All Natural Brewing Vankleek

Microbrasserie Cassel Brewery

The third and final brewery of the day is Cassel brewery. By this time of day, you’ll have noticed all the farm land that surrounds Ottawa, and how many small towns that are within a close distance to the city. The French influence of the east will have you wishing you were bilingual if that’s not something you can already boast.

At this stop, you can choose another few tastings or one full glass of beer. You can feel the unique touches and passion for the craft in every area of the space. Pay attention to the unique way they label their barrels  of beer! After the tour of this brewery, spending time in this cozy local brew pub will have you chatting up your new beer loving friends in no time.

As you ride back to Ottawa on the excitement of the day, Brew Donkey provides you with dessert from Maverick’s Donuts company.

You’ll be dropped off in Hintonburg or on Sparks Street; perfect areas to find a great place for dinner.

Ottawa Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Ottawa travel insurance?

100% YES!  — There’s a misconception that Canada has “free healthcare” for everyone. Nope! Only Canadians. So you’ll need to get travel insurance to visit Ottawa. I recommend this one.

💧 Can you drink the tap water in Ottawa?

Yes – ish  — While you can technically drink the tap water in Ottawa, as a local I don’t recommend it. Old hotels especially can have some nasty things in their pipes. Instead, get a filtered water bottle . ( Read more )

🚙💨  Do I need to rent a car in Ottawa?

Yes  — Renting a car in Ottawa is one of the best ways to get around! You’ll be able to see more of the city and beyond, like the epic hiking trails. I recommend Discover Cars for the cheapest rates possible.

📲  Do I need to know French in Ottawa?

Nope!  — The primary language of Ottawa is English. While French is also spoken and on some signs, you can easily get by without knowing any French. ( Read more )

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Ottawa accommodations?

For Ottawa hotels,  Booking  is the best site. If you’re considering an Ottawa Airbnb, don’t forget to also check  VRBO , which is often cheaper than Airbnb. My #1 hotel recommendation in Ottawa is the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Ottawa flights?

For finding cheap Ottawa flights, I recommend  Skyscanner . You can even set a price alert to find out when flights are on sale.

🎫  Do I need a Visa for Ottawa?

Likely Not  — U.S. and most European Passport holders don’t need a Visa to visit Canada.

📍  Where is Ottawa? And what’s nearby?

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, located in Ontario. It’s right on the border of Quebec . It’s about 2 hours from Mont Tremblant, 3 hours from Montreal, or 5 hours from Toronto . You can take a road trip to get to other places or fly.
