Passport Travel Tips

Safeguard your Passport. You must present your passport to the Customs and Border Protection officer upon arrival in the United States. Carry your passport—do not pack it in your checked luggage. We recommend you make a copy of your passport and put it in a separate place as a safeguard in case it is lost or stolen.

Traveling with Children. All children, including infants, must have their own passport or Trusted Traveler Program for U.S. entry. Carry documents for traveling with minor children.

  • If you are escorting a minor child without the parents, have a letter from both parents indicating that you have permission to travel with the minor.
  • If the child is accompanied by only one parent, the parent should have a note from the child's other parent. For example, "I acknowledge that my wife/ husband is traveling out of the country with my son/ daughter. He/She/ has my permission to do so."
  • If a single parent has sole custody, a copy of the court custody document can replace a letter from the other parent.

Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative

The Western Hemispheric Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows six types of acceptable documents required for travel in the Western Hemisphere, i.e., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America.

The goal of WHTI is to strengthen border security while facilitating entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate international travelers. WHTI makes the traveling process more efficient and convenient.

U.S. Passport Application Status

passport travel state

Do you need a passport to travel in the U.S. in 2024?

T ravel is tricky enough, but to add to the already confusing world of air travel, the U.S. government has been teasing us with updated identification requirements for what seems like forever. After years of changed dates, extended deadlines, and general defiance at the state level, there’s still a lot of confusion around the REAL ID Act, particularly when it comes to modern air travel . So, do you need a passport to travel within the U.S. once this goes into effect?

Direct answer:  You will not need a passport to travel within the US in 2024 or 2025, when the REAL ID Act goes into effect, though you can use one. Most people will use a REAL ID compliant driver’s license. These are already being issued and can be identified by the star in the upper right hand corner of the ID.

Read on to see more about what this means and how do you prepare if your ID isn’t already compliant? We’ll clear a few things up regarding this issue and explain the use of your passport when traveling domestically.

The REAL ID Act basics

For starters, the REAL ID Act was slated to become law back on Oct. 1, 2020. However, the unprecedented circumstances of the last few years — traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic in particular — pushed the execution date. Now that date has been changed yet again . According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), all U.S. travelers must meet the REAL ID requirements to board domestic flights by May 7, 2025 (it was last slated for May 3, 2024, with October 1, 2021, and then to May 3, 2024, as the dates before then). While you may not need a passport to travel, you will need a REAL ID.

Every state will require a REAL ID

If you thought maybe your state wouldn’t comply with the act, we’re sorry to say that every territory and state will require a REAL ID. Some states have already started issuing them, so you may have one.

The REAL ID won’t get you everywhere

For trips to Mexico (by land) and Canada, and other international travel , you will still need a passport to enter. The REAL ID isn’t a substitute for your passport.

The REAL ID isn’t a passport

When you get your new ID, it doesn’t replace a passport. This can’t be used to fly outside of the U.S., but it could be used as a second form of ID. It’s also not a visa, it’s just your ID taken up a notch.

Do I need a passport to fly domestically?

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), all adult passengers (18 and above) must show valid identification at the airport to travel. The identification must show your picture, name, and state of residence. It doesn’t necessarily need to be your passport, which means you can fly domestically in the U.S. in 2024 without a valid passport for travel.

If you don’t have a passport, there are other acceptable forms of identification, including:

  • U.S. passport card
  • State-issued driver’s license
  • DHS trusted traveler card
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Border crossing card
  • Permanent resident card
  • U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) ID
  • Tribal-issued photo ID

Believe it or not, even if you don’t have any form of ID because, say, you forgot it at home, it’s lost, or you’re a “sovereign citizen,” you’re still able to fly within the U.S. You’ll need to complete an identity verification process as required by the TSA.

Don’t plan on breezing through airport security , though, because you’ll be subject to additional (i.e., lengthier, more intensive) screening. Children under the age of 18 are not expected to provide identification when traveling domestically.

What kind of ID do you need to travel domestically within the U.S.?

For domestic US travel in 2024 , an in-date driver’s license or other DMV-issued photo identity card with work. For other methods of identification, check the TSA’s acceptable identification guidelines .

Starting on May 7, 2025 , you will need a new REAL ID if you plan to use an ID to board. Fortunately, you are likely to already have one. As, according to the DHS, “All 50 states are now in full compliance issuing these cards, with most states becoming compliant in the last four years.” Again, a REAL ID has a star in the upper right hand corner. If you happened to renew your last ID before your state was compliant, you’re now able to receive a REAL ID-compliant version at your next visit. In the absence of a REAL ID, you will be able to use a valid passport, a U.S. military ID, or a federal government PIV card for domestic travel.

Without a passport, REAL ID-compliant card, or any other accepted forms of identification, you won’t be allowed through TSA checkpoints, meaning you won’t be able to fly within the U.S.

Do you need a REAL ID to fly in the U.S.?

  • If the new date sticks, when it gets here, then yes, you will.
  • You’ll also need it if you want to enter federal facilities.

Beginning May 7, 2025, if they don’t have a passport, all U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID to fly for domestic travel. The ID will be required to access any federal facility, so, for example, you won’t be able to visit some national monuments, federal buildings, or loved ones at military installations without one.

This law will apply to all 50 states and territories, including Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Without the ID, you could still use your passport to fly locally. But that could still be a potential challenge for the almost 60% of U.S. citizens who don’t have a passport.

You get your REAL ID through your local Department of Motor Vehicles office, AAA, or regional state offices. It’s possible to complete the necessary documentation online before visiting the office, too, so be sure to check the minimum requirements before applying.

What do you need to travel within the U.S.?

When traveling as a resident, you’ll need a valid passport, driver’s license, state ID, or military ID. Before traveling, be sure to check your identification to ensure it is valid and current. Also, take time to learn about the laws of the state you’re flying to — that helps avoid delays and frustrations.

U.S. citizens can also use state-issued enhanced driver’s licenses (EDLs) to fly locally. Know that EDLs are only available in select states, including New York, Washington, Minnesota, Vermont, and Michigan. They’re typically given to residents in states close to U.S. borders to comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative .

If you’re a foreign national traveling within the U.S., you’ll need your passport, so be sure to keep your passport safe while traveling. Flying within the U.S. without a passport as a foreign national could be quite stressful.

On the other hand, green-carded residents must have their regular photo ID and green card to fly within the U.S. The card also functions as a driver’s license or other ID, and you’re not required to have a passport for domestic travel.

Where can I fly without a passport?

  • The sky is the limit — within the U.S.

As of 2024, there are no states that require passports from U.S. citizens to fly domestically. Your airline or the TSA should never ask you to present a valid passport. Of course, you could carry it with you for additional photo identification in case you lose your other forms of ID.

Bottom line: You can fly to all 50 states and surrounding territories without a passport. Just make sure to carry either your driver’s license or a state-issued ID. To avoid frustrations in the future, ensure your driver’s license and other ID are REAL-ID compliant before May 2025. You’ll need a passport to travel internationally , so it’s vital not to leave it at home if your travel plans are likely to include leaving the U.S.

If you have a trip planned for the next few years, it will be business as usual, where you won’t have to worry about having a passport or REAL ID, anyway. But after that, you will need a REAL ID, and if you don’t have one, you’ll need a valid passport. Either get ready to get your passport — which is good for 10 years — or your REAL ID before 2025, not forgetting about how long it could take to get that passport. Things will probably be a bit rough, and we’ll have some growing pains while everyone adjusts to the new REAL ID rules, so it might be better if you have a passport to be safe.

Aussie passport second most expensive in world

A graph has revealed just how expensive the Aussie passport is compared to other countries from around the world — does it surprise you?

Aussies already lay claim to having one of the most powerful passports in the world — and according to new research, the second most expensive.

In three months, the cost of the Australian passport is set to increase by 15 per cent, meaning those who plan on purchasing the ten-year travel document will have to pay almost $400, up from $346.

Amazing new features of Australian passport under blue light

In January, the fee increased per standard inflation price indexing that occurs each year – and will jump up again on July 1 to exactly $397.90 as the federal government puts up fees.

If you require priority processing, it’s another $252. So, if you’re planning on renewing your passport, it’s best to do so before July to avoid paying the extra $54 fee.

Mexico, Australia and the US have the highest passport costs at $353, $346 and $252 respectively, according to new research by Compare the Market Australia.

Compare the Market Australia revealed the Aussie travel document is the second most expensive passport in the world, based on price, years valid and power — and surprisingly, it has the second-lowest value per visa-free country – despite its relatively high ranking in the Henley Index.

According to Compare the Market Australia’s latest research, Mexico ranked first at $353.90 for its 10-year passport, while the six-year and three-year passports were fourth and ninth most expensive respectively.

The data found Australia’s passport is almost $100 more expensive than the next-most expensive passport on the list (belonging to the USA at $252.72).

For comparison, the New Zealand passport (the fifth most expensive on the list) costs $193.72.

Meanwhile, passports for the United Arab Emirates, India, and Hungary were the three cheapest on the list at $27.13, $27.70 and $31.78, respectively.

Compare the Market’s executive general manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, said the study revealed the importance of keeping your travel documents safe while overseas. “Damage, loss or theft of your passport is an unfortunate risk many people face while overseas,” Mr Taylor said.

The United Arab Emirates, India, and Hungary’s five-year passport were the three cheapest on the list at $27.13, $27.70 and $31.78, respectively.

“It is important to stay vigilant and take care of these vital documents, as even minor damage can stop you from travelling in some instances.”

And he’s not wrong. Several Aussies have been knocked back from visiting places like Bali.

One woman was turned away from her flight to Denpasar last month just hours prior to boarding after revealing she has a small tear in the spine of the document.

Another woman bound for Bali discovered water damage on the document, which ultimately led to her having to fork out hundreds of dollars more for an express replacement.

Rhode Island children stranded in Mexico after medical emergency

by LEANNA FAULK, NBC 10 NEWS

Two Rhode Island children are stranded in Mexico after a medical emergency abroad a cruise ship. (Martin Family)

(WJAR) — Two Rhode Island children are stranded in Mexico after a medical emergency abroad a cruise ship.

Sarah Martin sent her kids on a spring break cruise vacation with their grandparents, which was smooth sailing until their grandmother had a heart attack.

Now, her kids are stuck in Mexico with no passport, and no way to get to home.

"They were having the time of their lives just having so much fun," said Martin.

The fun stopped when she said their grandmother suffered a heart attack.

According to Martin, she was too critical to return to their original port of Miami.

The family was rushed to a local hospital in Cozumel where their grandmother remains in a medically-induced coma.

"They keep on asking me the same thing, mommy, how am I gonna get back to you? And it's just really sad because I don't have an answer," said Martin.

Some cruises that begin and end in the United States do not require guests to have a passport, however they are encouraged.

Now, Martin is begging the US Embassy for a lifeline to allow them to fly home.

"The US Embassy was misinformed on all of the options that we had. Nobody would help me," she said.

Martin said her 8-year-old son is days away from finishing his epilepsy medication.

"I don't want him to you know, join as his grandmother at the hospital," she said.

"I can fall down and crumble when they're not on camera. But when I'm on camera with them. I have a brave face, and I think it's helping them be brave."

An hour after NBC 10 reached out to Carnival Cruise, Martin said the company called her and confirmed they were in contact with the Embassy.

She said they are working to get her kids on a flight home as soon as Tuesday.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. Follow our news, recent searches, malaysia to follow singapore’s lead in qr code clearance; pilot for factory workers at johor land checkpoints, advertisement.

The pilot initiative will only apply to Malaysian citizens travelling in “bas kilangs” and these commuters would still be required to bring their passports along, a representative of the Johor state government told CNA.

JOHOR BAHRU: Under a pilot initiative launching in June, Malaysians travelling to Singapore on factory buses will be able to clear immigration through QR codes at both of Johor’s land checkpoints.

The scheme, spearheaded by Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, follows the successful response to the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA)’s move to roll out a QR code initiative on Mar 19 for those travelling by car on its side of the land border.

Singapore’s rollout has garnered positive feedback from commuters and this has led to increased calls from Johorean travellers and businesses for the Malaysia government to launch a similar initiative.

When contacted on Tuesday night (Apr 23), Johor’s Works, Transportation and Infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh told CNA that the pilot will apply to Malaysian citizens who travel to Singapore onboard “bas kilangs” or factory buses. He stressed that travellers with Singapore passports are not yet included in this pilot initiative.

Mr Fazli said these travellers will be able to use QR code clearance at both Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar, the immigration complexes linked to the Johor-Singapore Causeway and Tuas Second Link respectively.

“The pilot test initiative involves only Malaysians who pass through on board bas kilangs,” said Mr Fazli.

“These travellers are still required to bring their passports because at this point the QR code systems for both Malaysia and Singapore function differently and are not yet integrated,” he added.

passport travel state

Factory buses are Malaysian-registered vehicles which transport workers between Johor Bahru and industrial areas in Singapore. Local media estimate that around 500 of such buses pass through the land checkpoints each day.

Mr Fazli further explained that for this pilot, immigration officers will board the factory buses with handheld scanners at the checkpoints.

The officers will then scan the QR codes for each individual traveller. He said that the QR codes are generated by an application on their mobile phone.

Mr Fazli added that the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as the Immigration Department will make further announcements to confirm the details of the implementation of the QR code system.

passport travel state

He said that the overall plan is to “widen the scope of travellers” who will be able to use the QR code system.

Following Singapore’s roll out of its QR code system in March, travellers have reported positive feedback , with some outlining that the system has shaved up to 30 minutes off their journey time as it eases congestion on the Singapore side of the borders.

Johoreans and businesses have also urged the Malaysia government to reciprocate with a similar system, in line with plans for passport-free clearance in the proposed Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

In January, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU)  to develop a framework for a legally binding agreement on the SEZ. A key part of the MOU was exploring passport-free clearance on both sides of the border, and Singapore unilaterally introduced its system in March.

Immigration experts previously told CNA that passport-free travel at the Johor-Singapore border - one of the world’s busiest land crossings - would be a gamechanger to boost economic cooperation between the two countries.

Passport-free travel has been implemented in other parts of the world. For instance, the Schengen area in Europe permits travellers to cross country borders without the need for passport checks.

This includes countries such as Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

The United Arab Emirates is also set to implement facial recognition at its borders and remove the need to produce a passport at the port of entry.

FACTORY BUS PASSENGERS LAUD MOVE, HOPE MALAYSIA'S QR CODE SYSTEM WILL NOT HAVE GLITCHES

Malaysians who travel to Singapore via these factory buses told CNA that they welcomed the move to implement QR code immigration clearance on the Johor side of the border as it could decrease travel time and ensure smoother journeys.

Mr Meshach Raven Kelvin Suraj, who works as an aircraft engineer at Changi Airport, told CNA he typically takes 90 minutes to travel one way but he hopes that with the implementation of the QR code, this may be reduced to an hour.

passport travel state

"From June, we would not even need to disembark the bus and travel up and down escalators to clear immigration. We just need to sit and wait for the officers to come to us. That saves us time and energy," said Mr Meshach Raven.

"I hope that the initiative will reduce traffic jam at the Causeway and make all our lives easier," he added.

Mr Xi Heng Ching, who boards the factory bus to travel to and from his workplace in Singapore's Clarke Quay, told CNA that it was a relief that the Malaysia government has implemented the QR code initiative.

passport travel state

"When we read that Singapore had implemented it for drivers, we were wondering when it would be offered to us passengers. Thank you, Malaysia government for thinking of us," added Mr Xi.

"Others who have tried the Singapore QR code clearance had good things to say. We hope that Malaysia can also have smooth (implementation) of the system," said the food and beverage executive.

Mdm Nurafiza Nordin, a representative of the firm Best Driver Transport & Travel which offers factory bus services for Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore, told CNA that the company has not received any directive from the federal government on how the initiative will be implemented.

"We hope they will reach out soon so that we can let our passengers know what application to download and how to generate the QR code for themselves," said Mdm Nurafiza.

passport travel state

She also expressed hope that the initiative will be rolled out smoothly so that it will allow bus companies to increase the rate at which they transport workers across the border.

"We don't know how this QR code system will be like. If they implement it but it's not executed properly, there's no point. It will actually worsen congestion and cause bottlenecks," she added.
