How To Get to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial

This national memorial is located in Honolulu, Hawai’i, about 10 miles northwest of downtown. It is adjacent to the active U.S. military base Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The park’s boundaries encompass over 21 acres, and it commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The park allows visitors to see the USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and USS Utah memorials.  

The memorial is open 7 days a week, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The visitor center is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. There are times when inclement weather may cause the memorial to close, so it is best to check the memorial’s website for closures before setting out to explore this park.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the park’s closest airport option and is roughly a 20-minute drive away.

This airport is one of the largest, busiest airports in the world. It offers dozens of nonstop and connecting flights to many well-known cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Ontario, San Francisco, Seattle, Sydney, and Tokyo. Some airlines serviced here include Air Canada, American, Delta, Southwest, United, and WestJet.

Several routes are available when driving to this national memorial, depending on the area you are coming from. H1 West or HI 92 West can be taken for those coming from the airport .

Follow the signs to HI 99 W, which is the Kamehameha Highway. Continue on this highway until you get to the fourth traffic light, where you will take a left. This will lead you to the visitor center parking lot.

The #20 and #42 bus routes typically visit this park daily. Be sure to check the website for this service for current routes before boarding, as there have been times when these lines take a break from bringing guests to this park. 

The best way to get around this national memorial is on foot. Parking is available near the visitor center with a complimentary shuttle bus that can take you from the parking lot to the facility and other sites like the Battleship Missouri and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum .

What To See and Do at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial

This national memorial is packed with sites and exhibits to explore. From shuttled boat tours to interpretive exhibits, there is much to see and do at this park . Check out some of the top activities at Pearl Harbor National Memorial. 

Several exhibit galleries are scattered throughout this national memorial. These exhibits share a wealth of information about the different sites within the park and the different events regarding the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Some exhibits you won’t want to miss during your visit to this park include the Road to War, Attack, and the Interpretive Wayside Exhibits. Taking a moment at each display allows visitors to imagine and envision the horrific events of that tragic day.

Some galleries offer kiosks where guests can hear stories from witnesses of Pearl Harbor, see artifacts from the battle, and look at displays of personal memorabilia. These exhibits offer a unique way to experience this historical event and allow guests to stop and remember those who lost their lives on this day. 

The Ford Island Bus Tour is a unique way to visit the memorial’s less visited sites, including the USS Oklahoma and the USS Utah Memorials.

This tour is led by a park ranger who works closely with the U.S. Navy. The tour is 90 minutes long and departs from the visitor center. Tours are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3:15 to 5 p.m. It is important to note that this tour can only accommodate a maximum of 25 guests.

A reservation must be made in advance for those who want to participate in this tour, and there is a fee of $1 per visitor. This bus tour is one of the best ways to get an up-close view of many of the sites and learn from a knowledgeable park ranger at the same time. 

The Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater is located near the exhibit galleries. Many visitors will stop here as a part of the USS Arizona Memorial program, where they will watch a 23-minute documentary on the USS Arizona.

Another documentary offered in Theater 2 shows a separate 23-minute video about the attack on Pearl Harbor. These films are shown at a quarter after and a quarter to every hour, so there are plenty of opportunities to watch during your visit. 

This exhibit is near the Road to War and Attack galleries. Remembrance Circle is an exhibit that honors the men, women, and children who were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This site is a circular memorial that lists the names of the Medal of Honor recipients, displays a 3D bronze map of Oʻahu, and depicts the attack targets of this tragic day. Many guests will visit this site and offer a moment of silence or prayers out of respect for those who lost their lives on this day.

The USS Arizona Memorial is the site that brings most visitors to Pearl Harbor. The park offers a program that helps visitors to learn more about the attack on Pearl Harbor. This 45-minute program starts at the theater validation desk check-in.

Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 participate in this program daily to pay their respects and reflect upon those who served our country and those who lost their lives in this tragic attack. The program includes a shuttled boat ride to the USS Arizona, a time to tour the memorial, and a boat ride that takes you back to the visitor center.

Reservations must be made online if you hope to participate in this event.

1. A New National Memorial Established

President Dwight D. Eisenhower approved legislation in 1958 to establish the USS Arizona Memorial. In 1980, the National Park Service took over the operations with a special agreement to collaborate with the U.S. Navy.

The Pearl Harbor area was declared a national historic landmark in 1964. Later, the USS Arizona and the USS Utah shipwrecks were added to the national historic landmarks within the park.

Ford Island bus tours add another facet to the Pearl Harbor experience

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii — The National Park Service announced new bus tours to the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials on Ford Island will begin May 9.

Visitors regularly spend time at the Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Ford Island as part of the overall Pearl Harbor experience. Now, instead of shuttling past the group of white pillars that solemnly mark the USS Oklahoma Memorial on the way to the Missouri Memorial, and actually being able to visit the USS Utah Memorial on the northwest side of Ford Island, visitors on the new bus tour will hear the stories of the sailors and Marines who were killed on those respective battleships on Dec. 7, 1941. Countless are the stories of individuals on which to reflect and honor.

National Park Service Ranger Phil Lingenfelter is an avid reader and film buff, and he has those stories to share.

A week before the Dec. 7, 2019 commemoration, a woman named Margo stepped up to the information desk where Lingenfelter sat and said she knew nothing about her grandfather except that he had died aboard the USS Arizona. His name was Simon Romano.

“I immediately grabbed the book, ‘Men of Arizona,’ and looked up her grandfather’s name. Not only was his file in the book, there was a photograph,” shares Lingenfelter. “I showed it to her, and she took a photo of it. She and I actually went out to the memorial, and one of my all-time favorite photos is a photo of Margot kneeling by her grandfather’s name on the Arizona wall.”

Lingenfelter later mentioned the encounter with World War II Foundation’s Historian-in-Residence Daniel Martinez. Martinez called him to his office 15 minutes later. Lingenfelter learned about the history of Simon Romano, who, as an Officer’s Cook First Class, answered to only one individual on the USS Arizona — Commanding Officer Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh, the battleship’s last captain.

A letter written by Romano to his wife back home in Long Beach, California, especially touched Lingenfelter. “I picked it up and started to read the letter,” he said. “The impression I got of this couple is here’s a couple, just like anybody else struggling to pay their bills. He’s tried to send money to her on the Pan Am Clipper, and there’s a ring he bought her that I guess in a previous letter, she was asking him to mail to her. And he’s telling her ‘no,’ the ship is going to be on the West Coast for Christmas. ‘I want to be able to put in your finger.’”

Simon Romano’s wife, Margo’s grandmother, never received the letter dated Dec. 6, 1941.

Martinez and Lingenfelter mailed hard copies of Romano’s file to Margo in Australia. “And now she can share that with the rest of the members of the family.”

Stories from the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma Memorials

Launched on Dec. 23, 1909, and commissioned on Aug. 31, 1911, the USS Utah and its crew witnessed the U.S. occupation of Veracruz in 1941 during the Mexican Revolution, and was stationed at Berehaven, Ireland, after the U.S. entered World War I. The Utah conducted training cruises and fleet maneuvers, and toured South America with dignitaries onboard through the 1920s. In 1931, it was demilitarized and converted into a target ship and re-designated as AG-16.

On the morning of Dec. 7, the Utah was in Pearl Harbor. Two torpedoes hit it in the first few minutes of the attack, quickly flooding and rolling over the battleship. Most of its crew escaped except for 58 men.

Dedicated on Memorial Day in 1972, the USS Utah Memorial is a simple, white L-shaped platform that sits near the ship’s sunken remains. Two buoys mark the bow and stern.

Lingenfelter relates the story of Chief Yeoman T.D. Wagner and his wife. The couple had had twins, one of whom had passed away at birth. “He got reassigned to the USS Utah. Now, what he and his wife wanted to do was give his baby girl a burial at sea, and were awaiting the arrival of a proper chaplain being assigned to the USS Utah.” Then the attack took place. Wagner survived, but his baby’s ashes had been in his footlocker aboard the ship. Navy divers attempted to reach the locker, but could not.

“But you know what Chief Wagner said? He said, ‘That’s okay.’ He couldn’t think of anything better than to have his fellow shipmates guarding his baby girl for the rest of eternity.”

One might say that the Battleship Missouri Memorial steals the attention of visitors away from the USS Oklahoma Memorial with its striking profile towering above nearby Pier Foxtrot-5. Even Lingenfelter describes the Missouri as one of “the baddest battleships ever to go to sea,” along with its sister battleships, the Iowa, New Jersey and Wisconsin. He himself admits the Missouri “got into his blood” when he worked there about 20 years ago.

The USS Oklahoma Memorial, however, has its own stories to tell.

The USS Oklahoma was the 37th battleship to be commissioned by the U.S. Navy in May 1916. During WWI, it protected convoys on the Eastern Seaboard, and cruised the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and Mediterranean Sea during the years prefacing WWII.

After being transferred to the Pacific Fleet in October 1936, the Oklahoma moved to Pearl Harbor on Dec. 6, 1940. It took its final spot on Dec. 5, 1941 alongside its sister ships in what is now known as “Battleship Row.” It was hit by nine torpedoes, capsizing about 12 minutes after the first hit. The loss of the Oklahoma’s 429 sailors and marines was second only to the 1,100 lost aboard the USS Arizona.

Although Lingenfelter can share all the facts and figures of the battleships, he is most interested in the stories. This is no different.

“It was very common practice before WWII and during the war for brothers to serve aboard the same ship. It was basically that you wanted to have a brother with you,” he says. “Peter Barber and his wife, Gertrude, found out that their middle boy, Leroy, had talked their older boy, Malcolm and Randolph, their third boy, into joining the crew of the USS Oklahoma, because he felt it was good duty.

“The father was beside himself. He did not want all his sons serving on the same ship, and was on the verge of writing to the Secretary of the Navy to break them up. And guess what happens? Pearl Harbor happens.”

Lingenfelter explains that the parents “waited, waited and waited” to hear what had happened to their boys. It wasn’t until Valentine’s Day that they were notified that their boys were presumed dead aboard the Oklahoma.

“The week before Christmas, their mother got this photo of her boys who thought it would be a great present for their mother to have a photo of them in their dress whites for Christmas.”

On Feb. 2, the parents received official word that Malcolm, 22; Leroy, 21; and Randolph, age 19, were presumed dead aboard the USS Oklahoma.

The story of Pearl Harbor is the story of thousands of individuals who have lost their lives in service to the United States.

The 90-minute Ford Island Bus Tour adds another facet to the overall Pearl Harbor experience as the stories of those aboard the USS Utah and USS Oklahoma are shared with the greater public. Tours run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, departing from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center at 3:15 p.m.

The public can make reservations at recreation.gov that are required for all participants, including infants and children. Reservations are also non-transferable since the two memorials are located on Ford Island, an active-duty military installation.

For the rest of 2022, nonprofit partner Pacific Historic Parks will help keep the program’s tour reservation fees at a reduced cost. Reservations are $1 per person, which is charged and kept by recreation.gov; it’s not transferred to the National Park Service.

The Ford Island Bus Tour doesn’t include access to the USS Arizona Memorial. Those reservations require separate reservations on recreation.gov .

Pearl Harbor is an accessible site, there are no hills, and the paths are mostly flat. Wheelchairs are not available for rent at the park. There are benches placed around the visitor center and there are wheelchair locks on the US Navy navy boats to and from the memorial that sport visitors back and forth to the Memorial.

Motorized mobility devices are welcome at the Visitor Center and on US Navy Vessels, and the USS Arizona Memorial.

Strollers are welcome on site but can only go so far as the USS Arizona Memorial pre-boarding area at the Park Theater. Strollers are not permitted on US Navy vessels or the USS Arizona Memorial, please bring a baby carrier as an alternate option in these areas.

Can I bring food and beverages?  

Due to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial's no-bag policy, only bring snacks and water bottles that you can carry. There is a small snack shop on site that carries various sundry snacks and cold beverages as well as restaurants throughout the area. There are water fountains located throughout the park to use or refill water bottles.

What is appropriate dress and attire?

We recommend that all visitors consider this site is for remembrance and reflection of the loss of life in service to the United States, therefore please plan for appropriate dress. Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting.

Come prepared with comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout your visit, including a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are recommended.

What happens if Pearl Harbor closes for weather or security reasons?

Most of our tours will include a full refund in such cases. Tours including airfare and combo tours may operate depending on the circumstances. If they operate, unused admissions will be refunded.

The movie at the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center, the boat to the Arizona Memorial, the Arizona Memorial, and the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center are all out of our control. If there is a closure for safety, weather, mechanical or other causes, tours that have already departed are not eligible for refunds.

Rescheduling is not allowed within 24 hours of the tour. Because this is within the 24-hour cancellation policy, it is non-refundable.

Your pick-up location will be sent to you after booking. It is the guest's responsibility to be at the pick-up location at the time scheduled. Failure to be at the correct location or the correct time is considered a no-show and will not be rescheduled or refunded.

Relaxing ride to Pearl Harbor

Frank was informative and amusing. He was an amazing bus driver. We were very comfortable.he knows quite a bit about Hawaii. He was prompt picking us up and taking us back.

This is a very long tour. Be prepared to sit on bus all day long. I suggest to take the right side seat, not the driver side; you will see beautiful ocean and beach. The schedule is very tight for the Waimea valley waterfalls. It’s better save the lunch box and eat afterwards.

Sunset on Haleakala was amazing! So lucky it was not a cloudy day. So beautiful! Our driver Uncle Mitch was so knowlegable and passed on so may details, it made the experience even better. I would definitely recommend taking this trip.

We did the sunrise tour to Haleakala on Maui. Preston was our guide. He was wonderful ! He was quiet, allowing us to doze during the wee hours of the morning from 2-4 am, while we traveled to the crater. After the amazing experience of sunrise, he gave us lots of info about the island, it's history, it's people, safety tips, etc. He was professional, with a wry sense of humor, and made the experience memorable. We also stopped at Kula Lodge on the way down the mountain for breakfast. Sadly, the food was not that good and the server was cranky; however, I enjoyed the beautiful location, gardens and shop.

Everything was great, down to our bus driver, Kaleo. His jokes were a bit corny but he made the trip so comical. Never be late coming getting back to his bus -- or else he'll play hide and seek !! Loved this trip.

Maui sunset tour was great. Cousin Mitchell was terrific tour guide and skilled driver. Bus ride was comfortable and scenic. The sunset was outstanding. It’s much safer to have an experienced driver make the trip, especially in the dark on the way back. There are numerous switchbacks on the narrow road.

The 45-minute USS Arizona Memorial program begins at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater. It includes a brief introduction, a Navy-operated shuttle boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, and time to experience the memorial itself.    

Please have a printed or digital copy of your reservation ticket available to be scanned at check-in.  Tickets are non-transferable and not for resale.

Tickets are non-transferable and not for resale. Ticket reservations may not be made by commercial operators or agencies except as provided under the terms of a Commercial Use Authorization with the park.

Strollers are allowed in the visitor center, but not in the theater or at the memorial. Strollers may be left by the entrance of the theater and picked up at the end of the program.

There are several restrooms located throughout the visitor center, but there are no public restrooms on the USS Arizona Memorial.

Other than clear water, no food or drinks are allowed in the theater, on the shuttle boats, or at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, food and drinks are allowed at the visitor center, which has a small snack shop with sandwiches and drinks. The nearby Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum has a food truck and vending machines for cold beverages. There is a restaurant at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and the Battleship Missouri Memorial has a lunch truck. There are many types of restaurants a short drive from the visitor center.

Beginning April 15, 2023, a fee of $7/day for parking at the visitor center will be collected through a virtual pay system on visitors’ mobile devices or via an onsite kiosk (this fee cannot be paid through recreation.gov). During busy days parking lots can fill up, so please arrive an hour early to ensure you arrive at the theater before your scheduled departure time. 

Bags are prohibited at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Clear, see-through stadium bags and bags containing medical devices or medication may be allowed into the site at the discretion of the National Park Service. Cameras, cell phones, and wallets are allowed. Bags may be secured in the storage facility near the visitor center entrance for a fee. This privately-operated bag storage facility is open daily from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. Parking lots are monitored and patrolled, but please do not leave items of value in your car. Visitors are reminded that they are visiting a site of tremendous loss of life in service to our country. The USS Arizona Memorial marks a final resting place for hundreds and a space for remembrance and reflection by millions more. Considering this, we recommend visitors recognize appropriate dress and personal standards. Military visitors to the memorial are within the bounds of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and military regulations relating to military dress are enforced by Navy personnel. Per COMNAVREG Hawaii Instruction 1020.2N, military visitors in uniform are required to dress in Class B or better in order to gain access to the USS Arizona Memorial. Battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial, though it is allowed throughout the visitor center and at sites on Ford Island. Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire when visiting. 

The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center has reserved accessible parking in the front parking lot. The restrooms, theater, exhibit galleries, bookstore, information desks, drinking fountains, Navy shuttle boats, and USS Arizona Memorial are all fully accessible to visitors in wheelchairs. There are many locations throughout the visitor center for visitors to sit and rest. For those with hearing impairments, the documentary shown in the theater is fully captioned in English. There is an induction loop for use with hearing aids. Visually impaired visitors will find signage in braille in addition to tactile models of various interpretive resources throughout the site. 

Please arrive at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center at least one hour before your scheduled ticket time to ensure you can find parking and properly stow any bags at the baggage storage. Please arrive at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater 10 to 15 minutes before your ticket time.
