The best time to visit peru, how to prepare for your trip to peru, plan your perfect peru tour in 5 minutes.
Peru is typically a safe place to visit, but like with any location, tourists should use caution to protect themselves. It’s crucial to be attentive and take precautions like avoiding walking alone at night, keeping valuables secure, and being aware of common scams because crime, including petty theft and scams, can occur in tourist areas.
It’s also a good idea to research your destination and remain up to date on any travel advisories, as some areas of Peru, especially isolated ones, may have safety issues due to political or social upheaval.
The official language of Peru is Spanish. Don’t worry, you’ll get along fine if you don’t speak any Spanish, as many people speak English in the tourist regions.
This depends on how much time you have available. We highly recommend to come to Peru for at least 5-7 days so that you can discover the must-visit sites, such as Cusco, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley and more
Banks, exchange facilities, and authorized currency exchange offices, which are frequently located in tourist destinations, are places where you can exchange money in Peru. Besides that, you’ll find many ATMs, especially in the major cities and popular tourist destinations. Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus/Maestro are among the international cards that are commonly accepted at ATMs. More info in our guide to money exchange in Peru.
Tipping is normally not required in Peru, however it is appreciated for good service. Here are some general recommendations about Peruvian tipping:
Restaurants: A 10% gratuity is frequently charged as a “servicio” charge on restaurant bills. If so, there is no need for you to leave a second tip. The general rule is to leave a 10% tip if the “servicio” price is not included.
Tour guides: Tipping the guide and the driver after the tour tour is common. Depending on the length and caliber of the tour, a reasonable tip ranges from 20 to 50 soles per participant.
Hotels: Although tipping is not expected at hotels, it is customary to give the housekeeping crew a little gratuity. Every night, a tip of five to ten soles is reasonable.
Taxis: While rounding up fares to the nearest full amount is normal, tipping taxi drivers is no common practice in Peru. If your fare is 17 soles, for instance, you may give the driver 20 soles and instruct him or her to keep the change.
The number one airline we recommend for traveling within Peru is Latam Airlines. They are by far the most reliable airline in the country.
We take great care to craft an alluring blend of adventure, comfort/luxury, and up-close country experience, blending the occasionally inevitable travel inconveniences with a little bit of pleasure.
A well-balanced mix of modest, charming, boutique hotels, comfortable haciendas or jungle lodges up to high-class hotels. All our accommodations are tailored to your personal preferences, needs and budget and we do everything possible to meet your needs.
Information about the hotels visited can be found on the respective tour page on our website.
A group tour consists of 2 to 8 travelers that follow a set schedule and travel in a comfortable van to the various sights. With our private tour, you’ll travel in a private car with your tour guide. Also, you have more flexibility in terms of the tour itinerary.

Tours to Peru
Of course a must-do in Peru is the bucketlist Inca Trail trek to majestic Machu Picchu , but there's plenty more to see on our Peru small group tours. Enjoy a traditional Peruvian barbecue in the Sacred Valley or surround yourself with the sounds of birds and monkeys in the Amazon jungle.
Ways to explore Peru
Walking and trekking, food and drink, discover our peru tours.
Embark on one of our small group tours to Peru and your expert local tour leader will show you the very best that this spectacular country has to offer. Alternatively, go without a group and choose from two private tours to Peru and you'll be joined by private guides throughout.
You’ll never forget the first time you see Machu Picchu , set on an emerald-green mountain-top surrounded by dense cloud forest. Whether you join our walking Inca Trail Tour or jump on a mountain train to get there, losing yourself amongst the ancient temples, palaces and humble dwellings of this famous ‘lost’ city is a true bucketlist experience.
Other highlights of our Peru adventure tours include a trek to the multi-colored rainbow mountain of Palccoyo, spotting Andean Condor above the vast river gorge of Colca Canyon and exploring the Inca Empire city of Cusco with its patchwork landscape of terracotta roofs and winding alleyways. Considering a trip to Peru but new to small group travel? We've answered some of your most-asked questions .

Peru tour highlights
Our selection of small group tours to Peru can take you from the soul-stirring sights of walking the Inca Trail to exploring the Peruvian Amazon, family trips in the Sacred Valley or tours of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.
From lofty mountain peaks to fascinating Inca ruins, our tours encompass a vast choice of experiences around Peru, but a few of our favorite highlights include:
Trekking the Inca Trail is the classic Peru experience. Culminating in Machu Picchu, designated one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this challenging route twists and turns through the Andes Mountain Range, passing rushing rivers, crumbling Inca ruins and cloud forests wreathed in mist. Our four-day fully supported trek includes navigating the Inca Trail, staying at campsites away from the crowds, as well as Machu Picchu; one of the best views of the trip is getting your first glimpse of the glorious Inca ruins as you arrive at the Sun Gate on foot. You’ll also get to stroll through the ancient cobbled streets of Cusco, the atmospheric former Inca capital.
There’s also the option to extend your trip with a visit to an eco-lodge in the wildlife-rich Amazon basin. The trek can also be combined with an in-depth Peru trip to Lake Titicaca and Colca Canyon, two of Peru’s most compelling natural highlights, where you’ll stay on the island of Taquile in a traditional homestay. There’s nothing like watching the sun set over the glass-like waters of the world’s highest navigable lake.
Machu Picchu
Perhaps the most famous of Peru’s top sights, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Set high in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of 2,430 metres, it is believed to have been built by the Inca in the 15 th century and later abandoned, though its original use still remains a mystery. You’ll certainly recognise the labyrinth of dry-stone walls clinging to the grassy plateau and terraced steps leading down to the Urubamba River. Whether choosing a classic Peru trip taking in the ancient citadel, a walking and trekking tour to Peru , or combining your trip with the Galapagos Islands , you’ll find that Machu Picchu features highly on all of our group tours to Peru.
Peru’s striated mountains are high up on many people’s must-see sights in Peru, but this in turn attracts the crowds. Escape the bus tours with a trip to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain – the antidote to the photographers' paradise of Vinicuna – where its striped flanks are dappled in shades of grey-green, pale gold and rich umber. Getting away from the crowds is something we aim to do on our tours, so if you’re looking to explore the mountains of Peru, Palccoyo is one to add to your list. Not only is the Palccoyo trek quieter and shorter than the alternative, it’s an out-and-back route which will allow you to enjoy the views on the way up and the way down.
Colca Canyon
One of the world’s deepest canyons, Colca Canyon is also one of the best places in Peru to spot rare Andean Condors. If the conditions are right, you can stand at the canyon rim and view these magnificent birds soaring on the thermals from miradors such as Cruz del Condor. The birds often swoop low over onlookers’ heads, adding to the excitement provided by the spectacular 1200 metre drop to the river below. You can visit Colca Canyon on our Peru In Depth tour , which also includes the Inca Trail during 19 days of thrilling discovery.
Cusco was the former capital of the Inca empire, and marries both archaeological ruins and elegant Spanish colonial architecture – the latter best seen in Plaza de Armas, the old city’s colonnaded central square. Peruvian cuisine has seen somewhat of an explosion in recent years, and Cusco has its fair share of recommended restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Peruvian dishes like ceviche or tacu tacu – like Peruvian bubble and squeak. It’s also the gateway to Machu Picchu, so if you’re taking in the Inca citadel on one of our classic Peru tours you’ll pass through Cusco.
Solo travel in Peru
All of our Peru tours are suitable for solo travelers . You can expect that about half of our customers will travel solo, so if you’re considering an Explore tour as a solo traveler you won’t be the only person traveling alone. Going on a small-group tour gives you the perfect opportunity to meet fellow travelers who share the same interests. Considering traveling solo with a small group for the first time? We've answered some of your most-asked questions .
Best time to go to Peru
The dry season from May to September is the most popular time to hike the Inca Trail and visit the wonder of Machu Picchu . The hottest months of June and August are the busiest, whereas in September and October the temperatures are pleasantly warm without being too hot, and the trails are quieter. Amazon Rainforest If you plan to extend your Peru tour with a wildlife-spotting trip along the tropical Amazon River , book a trip in September, October or November for the best experience. Immerse yourself in the lush jungle waterways and keep a lookout for bright orange frog, rainbow feathered Macaw and inquisitive otter. Inti Raymi Festival For an immersive Peruvian cultural experience, book onto our Classic Peru Discovery Tour in June to witness colorful parades, eclectic dancing and live music during the Inti Raymi Festival celebrations in Cusco. This old Inca ‘Festival of the Sun’ happens on 24 June to mark the Southern hemisphere winter solstice.

Guru Explorers set up an amazing experience for me and my family to explore Iquitos and the Amazon jungle. We stayed in an amazing lodge surrounded by nature. The rooms were very cozy, the pool was refreshing and the food was AMAZING. On our adventure we got to meet monkeys and sloths, visit with locals, fish for piranhas, and boat along side pink dolphins. My favorite part was seeing the INCREDIBLE sunsets and watching the starry night from a boat in the middle of the Amazon river. Our guides and staff were SUPER kind and welcoming. Overall it was an amazing trip that my family will get to talk about forever.
Thank you Guru Explorers for helping us plan our trip to Peru! We enjoyed our tour to Machu Picchu and Humantay Lake. Your team went above and beyond to make our experience memorable. 100% recommended
Genios totales!

Amazing experience! The tour moves quickly so you see a lot in a short amount of time, which is exactly why I love these types of tours. I couldn't of asked for a better guide or group.

Premium Peru
Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.
7 Day Cusco Travel Package: Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake, and Rainbow Mountain.
My friend and I had a fantastic experience with Freddy's tour. Our guide, David, was very kind, and Wilson, our driver, was reliable. David was knowledgeable and provided us with interesting historical facts and insights into the local culture. The vehicle was always on time and ready for us. If I ever return to Cusco, I'll definitely consider booking another tour with Kantu Peru tours. Thank you for a great experience!

06 Days Cusco Machu Picchu - Humantay Lake And Rainbow Mountain
A really well organised tour and a lovely hotel in Cusco. 3 consecutive days of really early starts (0400 pick up) after late finish can be quite taxing. Destinations are sensational. Would recommend spreading the tours over more days or having overnight stays closer to the destination rather than always returning Cusco. Also advise arriving early in Cusco to acclimatise as the altitude can be a problem.
Southern Treasures - 8 Days
The tour was excellent, a good choice of hotels and our 1st guide Saul was excellent, our 2nd guide Manuel was very good.

Ultimate Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu - 5 Days
I recently got back from this vacation, and all things considered, it very well may have been the nicest trip I've ever been on. The landscape is out of this world, the people who work here are kind and helpful, and TreXperience has been of assistance as well. However, Monica, our tour guide, was the one who really made a difference. If you had the choice, I think you should take her. The journey is not going to be easy, but it is not going to be impossible either. However, once you reach to Machu Picchu, you won't remember any of the hardships along the way. Unseen, I am confident in recommending it.

Hiking The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley
Inkayni Peru Tours provided a fantastic experience for us on our trip to Peru. Upon arriving to Cusco, Inkayni staff picked us up from airport and that day in the afternoon we got a briefing with our fantastic guide Jose, he explained all about each day of our itinerary, the next day we did the visit to the Sacred Valley, in Chinchero we learned about the andean textiles. It was an amazing experience! Jose was amicable and super helpful, to a degree I would never expect anywhere. We (family of 4) first did some small tours with our guide, visiting Incan remains around the city. After that, we did the 4 day Inca trail hike to Machu Pichu which was absolutely wonderful. We saw a variety of other tour groups during the route of different tour operators that had workers older, I was so happy we lucked out and booked our trip with them because the porters were not too older. Inkayni team exceeded my expectations from the beginning and I would definitely recommend them.
Inca Trail Express
The hiking is not safe for the last hiker who was walking slow and all alone on the trail. The leader guide was leading ahead and left the last person on his own! There was not any last leader to keep accompany with the tourist! At the trail junction I was lost the whole group!
Explore Machu Picchu National Geographic Journeys
Excellent itinerary that went to all the places I wanted to visit in the Sacred Vally culminating in Machu Picchu. The guides were funny , knowledgeable and always kept us informed on where we were going and what to expect. They answered all questions swiftly and gave us advise on where to eat or shop .
Classic Inca Trail Trek 4D/3N to Machu Picchu (Group service )
The tour was awesome! The company was great in communicating with us, answered all our questions and were very clear about what they can and cannot do. They also carry 4kg of our stuff which is quite generous in comparison with other companies. On the trek, the guides were awesome! Jaime was very attentive, knowledgeable and made sure to show us all the Inca ruins and explain the history. It was a pleasure listening to him and getting to know more about Inca history. Elix was very caring, made sure to keep an eye on all of us and to not leave anyone behind. He always encouraged us to keep going and would make sure the slowest in the group were not left behind and not walking alone. It was a pleasure being taken care of by Jaime and Elix :) Eulogio, the chef, was one of the highlights of the trek! The food was exquisite and we all enjoyed the dishes he made for us and the cake at the end of the trek. Tasty, filling, and gave us energy, Eulogio's cooking was restaurant-standard! Last but not least, the porters! These guys were super heroes!! They carried everything for us throughout the 4 days and made us as comfortable as possible by always being ahead of us, setting up our tents, and packing our stuff the next day! Would definitely go to Alpaca Adventures when we come back to Peru in the future :)

Best time to visit peru.
Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.
June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.
Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs
Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.
This is a stark contrast to the European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese and Chinese immigrants.
Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.
What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or futbol , as it’s called here.
Eating and drinking
Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.
Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.
The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.
Taste your way through Peru on our 10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.
Foods to try in Peru
Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chilli peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.
Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.
3. Lomo saltado
This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.
4. Pisco sour
Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.
5. Coca tea
Rumoured to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment
Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.
The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the centre of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.
History and government
Early history.
Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organised civilisations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.
Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilisations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilisations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.
However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.
Recent history
Peru's more recent history has been dominated by military coups and regional disputes. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices levelling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.
New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.
Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.
Must-visit places in Peru
Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:
1. Machu Picchu
No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.
Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day Inca Trail Express from Lima tour.
History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.
3. Sacred Valley
This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every colour, produce and animal imaginable.
Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day Sacred Land of the Incas trip.
4. Amazon Jungle
Spend mornings watching colourful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.
Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day Amazon Jungle Short Break.
Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.
Savour the flavours of Lima on our 20 day Peru Encompassed tour.
6. Arequipa
The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.
7. Colca Canyon
While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 metres, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.
Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day Peru Essentials tour.
8. Lake Titicaca
Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.
See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a Lake Titica Homestay.
9. Nazca Lines
The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometres. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.
10. Aguas Calientes
Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or travelled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.
Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our 9 Premium Peru trip.
You'll find vendors selling colourful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.
Things to buy in Peru
1. Alpaca wool clothing
As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.
The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has travelled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.
3. Jewellery
Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.
Highlights of Peru
However you get to Machu Picchu – whether it’s through spectacular scenery on the classic Inca Trail, through small Andes villages on the Inca Quarry Trail, or over mega mountain passes on the Choquequirao Trail – the feeling of reaching this otherworldly archaeological site will stay with you for a lifetime. This ancient 15th-century citadel is a spectacular reminder of the ingenuity of the Inca civilisation.

2. Arequipa
Be dazzled by the 'White City' of Arequipa. Standing at the foot of El Misti Volcano, Arequipa vies with Cusco for the title of Peru's most attractive city. Wander the famous Plaza de Armas and while away the days in cosy cafes, admire the city's beautifully built churches and the iconic Basilica Cathedral, or learn about ancient mummies in the Andean Sanctuaries Museum.
- Premium Peru in Depth
- Premium Peru in Depth with Ica Valley
Shrouded in mystery, the Nazca Lines is one of the world’s most intriguing archaeological sites. Thanks to dry desert conditions, these geoglyphs – which date back to the 2nd century BC – and the mummies, textiles, ceramics and other relics that have been discovered here, offer a rare glimpse into pre-Inca life. Climb to the viewing platform, or perhaps take a flight over the lines for an epic view.

4. Puerto Maldonado
Experience the magic of the Amazon on an enthralling jungle adventure. Hike beneath cool, leafy canopies while looking for monkeys, parrots and otters; cruise along the Amazon on a canoe; learn about the healing properties of native plants with a local guide, and swap your alarm clock for the songs and croaks of toucans and other tropical birds.
- Real Peru to Bolivia
Welcome to the capital of Peru. Lima is one of the most up-and-coming foodie destinations, so the best way to explore is through your tastebuds! Be sure to sample ceviche (the country’s national dish), washed down with a pisco sour in the bustling Barranco neighbourhood. Then, stroll through the beautiful Lima Cathedral, or swing your hips to folk music at a peña (a traditional Peruvian music venue).

6. Lake Titicaca
Defy logic while standing on Lake Titicaca’s famous floating islands, which are made entirely out of reeds by the Uros people (who still live on them!). Surrounded by striking peaks on the border of Peru and Bolivia , this is one of the highest lakes in the world. Dive into learning about the history of the lake and its communities, or simply enjoy the bliss of being immersed in nature.
- Lake Titicaca Homestay
Cusco is South America's oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Inca for two centuries before the Spanish arrived. Today, it’s a fascinating combination of both cultures. Tour the Coricancha Temple, wander the World Heritage-listed Cusco Cathedral, peruse the colourful San Pedro market, or do the incredible Inkilltambo trek on the city’s outskirts.

8. Sacred Valley
Treasured for its climate and fertile land, Sacred Valley has long been the main food source in the high Andes. It’s also home to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, another site that will show you how incredible the Inca civilisation was. Take part in an ancient cooking ritual known as pachamanca with the Chichubamba community; do a traditional chocolate and corn beer workshop; or climb the steep terraces to Ollantaytambo where sweeping views over the valley await.

Festivals and events in Peru
Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organised), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:
1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)
The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.
2. Mistura Culinary Festival
Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.
3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)
Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.
4. Carnaval
Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

While tipping isn't mandatory in Peru, it's customary to add spare change or a small amount to restaurant bills. What's the weather like in Peru?
The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit Peru changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this South American country.
What to wear in Peru
Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good shout for hot weather.
What are the toilets like in Peru?
Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they're not always provided. Toilet paper isn't supposed to be flushed, and most toilets have a bin next to them to dispose of the used toilet paper. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if travelling on the Inca Trail.

Your local leader will be able to help you find filtered water, and for environmental reasons, we suggest filling a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic bottles.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Peru?
Most hotels, large retailers and tourist attractions accept credit cards but will usually charge a fee (about 7%) for using them. Make sure you carry cash for when you're dealing with small vendors, family-run restaurants and market vendors.

No vaccines are required in order to enter Peru but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.
Recommended travel vaccines for Peru:
1. Hepatitis A (transmitted through contaminated water) 2. Typhoid (transmitted through contaminated water) 3. Yellow Fever (transmitted by mosquitos): This vaccination is recommended if you’re visiting Puno or the Amazon. Some countries require a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate for entry after visiting Peru. Do your research before leaving home to see if you require this vaccine.
Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?
Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.
We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.
Is Peru an LGBTQIA+friendly destination?
While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a Pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQIA+ rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ travellers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when travelling in country areas.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.
Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
