PGA Tour releases 2022-23 schedule, including major changes to the FedEx Cup

PGA-Tour-Logo.jpg

Icon Sportswire

The PGA Tour released its full 47-event schedule for the 2022-23 season, the last wraparound campaign before the tour switches back to a calendar-year-based schedule beginning in 2024.

Notable changes include the BMW Championship moving from Wilmington Country Club in Delaware back to the Chicago area, with Olympia Fields playing host to the second of three FedEx Cup playoff events after staging a fan-less BMW in 2020. Just 70 players will qualify for the first playoff event next season, the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, down from the 125 that have made it to the postseason since the FedEx Cup began in 2007 . These 70 will be fully exempt for the following season, while players outside the top 70 will compete for FedEx Cup points and additional status in a series of fall events.

Fifty players will advance from the FedEx St. Jude to the BMW, with the top 30 qualifying for the season-ending Tour Championship, which wraps on Aug. 27.

The top-50 finishers in the FedEx Cup playoffs—so, those who qualify for the BMW Championship—will be eligible to compete in a series of international events. Details of this international series are expected to be released later this year, but the tour’s release says the limited-field, no-cut events also will be open to the top performers in the fall series.

MORE: The PGA Tour's new plan for keeping its stars

Both of the first two FedEx Cup playoff events will see their purse increase from $15 million to $20 million, part of widespread increases in prize money payouts for events throughout the upcoming season. The Sentry Tournament of Champions will have a purse of $15 million, up from $8.2 million, and the three player-hosted invitationals—the Genesis Invitational, the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday—as well as the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play will offer $20 million in prize money, all up from $12 million. The FedEx Cup will once again feature a $75 million prize pool, while the Comcast Business top 10 will pay $20 million to the top 10 finishers in the FedEx Cup regular-season standings. The Player Impact Program will include $50 million in total bonuses.

The match play is the only World Golf Championship event on the schedule after the cancellation of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China.

MORE: The latest FedEx Cup points standings heading into the 2021-22 regular-season finale

The season once again begins at the Fortinet Championship (Sept. 15-18) in Napa, which will take place the week before the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. The CJ Cup, which was held in South Korea from 2017-19 before moving to Las Vegas for 2020 and 2021, moves to Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. The RSM Classic (Nov. 17-20) will be the last PGA Tour event of 2022, with the season picking up again at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii after New Year's. After two events in Hawaii the tour heads to the west coast for The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open, which will finish on a Saturday for the second-consecutive year. The following week will see Phoenix play host to both the WM Phoenix Open and the Super Bowl.

The rest of the schedule looks almost identical to that of 2021-22, with notable exceptions including the Rocket Mortgage Classic moving to late June and the 3M Open sliding one week later and serving as the penultimate event of the FedEx Cup regular season.

2022-23 PGA Tour schedule: Elevated purses, bonus pools, smaller FedEx Cup Playoffs field

The pga tour's upcoming schedule includes big pay days for some of the best players in the world.

pga-tour-fedex-cup-playoffs-g.png

The PGA Tour released its schedule for the 2022-23 season on Monday, beginning with the Fortinet Championship on Sept. 12 and ending with the Tour Championship on Aug 27. Featuring 44 regular season tournaments and three playoff events, there are no massive changes to the playing calendar at first glance. (Those are set to come in 2024.)

While the schedule may not have changed significantly, there are record-setting modifications in the form of monetary prizes beneficial for members of the PGA Tour. A record $415 million in total prize money will be distributed across official events with another $145 million available in bonuses, $75 million of which will be awarded during the FedEx Cup.

"We've heard from our fans and the overwhelming sentiment was that they wanted more consequences for both the FedExCup Regular Season and the Playoffs, and to further strengthen events that traditionally feature top players competing head-to-head," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. "We feel strongly we've accomplished all of these objectives and more, creating a cadence of compelling drama for every tournament throughout the season. Each week has its own identity and purpose, and we're set up for an exciting 2022-23 campaign as we transition into a calendar season in 2024 that will include a number of new and innovative competitive aspects in the fall."

Let's take a look at what changes are coming next season and beyond. Also, be sure to check out the entire 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule .

What's new in 2023?

Invitationals offer big paydays: Eight tournaments will take on "invitational" status and receive elevated purses ranging from $15 million to $25 million. Those events include the Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, The Memorial Tournament, St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship.

Same events, different weeks: The Rocket Mortgage Classic will be moved up on the calendar from late July to late June, which means the 3M Open will now serve as the penultimate regular season event. While those two tournaments will take place at a different stage in the season, the CJ Cup will be held at a new venue as it moves from The Summit Club in Las Vegas to Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina.

Bonus pools get a boost:  The PGA Tour will award $145 million in bonuses in 2022-23. The largest portion, $75 million, will come via the FedEx Cup. That matches the 2022 total. There will also be $50 million awarded through the Player Impact Program , up from $40 million, and $20 million awarded for the Comcast Business TOUR Top 10. which rewards those players who finish the regular season inside the top 10 of the FedEx Cup rankings.

FedEx Cup Playoffs qualifying reined in:  While purses are larger, the qualifying criteria for the FedEx Cup Playoffs has been tightened. Instead of the top 125 players qualifying for the first postseason event, only 70 players will lock up a spot at the St. Jude Championship and secure their future playing privileges. From there, the fields will be trimmed to 50 players for the BMW Championship and 30 players for the Tour Championship which remains the same. This will be different from the past few seasons as 70 players have historically gained access to the second playoff event.

What's coming in 2024

The lack of significant changes to the 2022-23 schedule is no surprise as the PGA Tour is set for a substantial overhaul in 2024.

Calendar-year season:  The fall swing will be no more in 2024 as players will not need to jostle for their FedEx Cup positioning in the latter stages of the year. Instead, the bulk of the FedEx Cup competition is set to take place from January to August, leaving the fall months available for a qualification series for the upcoming calendar year and an international series.

Fall qualification series: Following the FedEx Cup Playoffs at the end of the 2022-23 season, those who do not qualify for the postseason will compete in a set of events that will determine their PGA Tour eligibility for 2024. With the decrease from 125 to 70 players qualifying for the postseason, this is the PGA Tour's way of trimming the fat. Full parameters for these tournaments have yet to be announced, but more turnover among the backend players on tour can be expected.

International series:  The top 50 players in the end-of-year FedEx Cup standings -- those who qualify for the BMW Championship -- along with the top performers from the fall will compete in a number of events outside of the United States. More details will be released at a later date, but large purses are expected.

2024 PGA Tour schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

pga tour schedule calendar

The 2024 PGA Tour schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are going back to a calendar-year schedule, with the FedEx Cup season running from the start in January through the end of the Tour Championship in August. The FedEx Cup Fall will still unfold from September through November, but these tournaments will not count toward the full-season FedEx Cup standings -- rather, they will be added on to the FedEx Cup points earned through the FedEx St. Jude Championship to determine the top 125 in PGA Tour cards.

Signature events

The PGA Tour has created a series of signature events, all of which will have purses of at least $20 million: the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial Tournament, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the RBC Heritage, the Wells Fargo Championship and the Travelers Championship. These events will offer 700 FedEx Cup points to the winners and will have limited fields based on the top 50 in the prior year's FedEx Cup standings and other criteria.

FedEx Cup playoff changes

The FedEx Cup playoffs are changing for 2024 as well. The series will remain at three events, but only the top 70 players in the standings at the end of the regular season will qualify, with cuts to 50, then to 30 players after each of the FedEx Cup events. The FedEx Cup bonus pool increases this year to $100 million.

Report: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy among big PGA Tour payouts

Rory McIlroy explains why the PGA Tour's equity figures are insufficient to compete with LIV Golf's payouts. (0:19)

Tiger Woods , Rory McIlroy and other PGA Tour stars are about to receive massive bonuses for their loyalty.

The Telegraph reported Wednesday that Woods will receive up to $100 million in equity as part of the newly created for-profit PGA Tour Enterprises, with McIlroy getting about half that amount.

The payouts, which are set to be disclosed to the players by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Wednesday, are a way to thank players for sticking with the PGA Tour instead of jumping to the rival LIV Golf League and huge paydays from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Nearly 200 players will receive a stake, with $750 million of it going to the top 36 players based on a formula that weighs career success and cultural popularity, according to The Telegraph. Other notable payouts include $30 million each for Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas , while $75 million is targeted to go to notable retired players.

To receive the money, players would have to continue to remain loyal to the PGA Tour, with the funds vesting over the next eight years, according to The Telegraph. And going forward, the PGA Tour plans to award $100 million per year to the players.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked Wednesday how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

"I think the one thing we've learned in golf over the last two years is there's never enough," said McIlroy, who also said that he's interested in returning to the PGA Tour's policy board, as has been reported and is pending a board vote that could take place this week.

"At the end of the day, it's not quite up to me to just come back on the board," McIlroy said. "There's a process that has to be followed."

The other board members are Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Spieth and Woods.

PGA Tour Enterprises received an investment of up to $3 billion earlier this year from Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of sports team owners that includes the New York Mets ' Steve Cohen and the Atlanta Falcons ' Arthur Blank.

A week later, Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

A source with knowledge of the Player Equity Program told The Associated Press that the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com, which received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players, reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

The 36 players from the top tier were judged on "career points," such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories, Golf.com reported.

"It's really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal," Jason Gore, the tour's chief player officer, said in one of the videos obtained by Golf.com.

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

The PGA Tour and LIV are in merger talks, but they have been protracted, with no clear end in sight. Both tours have continued to operate independently, keeping many of the top names in golf from competing against one another for most of the golf calendar -- major tournaments (Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship) excepted

"I think I could be helpful to the process," McIlroy said of a formalized unification of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. "But only if people want me involved."

He said he aims to promote compromise while also trying "to help people see the benefits of what unification could do for the game and what it could do for this tour in particular."

"We obviously realize the game is not unified right now for a reason, and there's still some hard feelings and things that need to be addressed," McIlroy said. "But I think at this point, for the good of the game, we all need to put those feelings aside and all move forward together."

The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report.
