Phoebe Bridgers at the O2 Academy Brixton.

Phoebe Bridgers review – a truth-telling phenomenon

O2 Academy Brixton, London The adored LA singer-songwriter pairs references to the male rock pantheon with Roe v Wade in a magnetic set that cries out for festival headline billing

F ive years ago, the festival industry, prone to hand-wringing about where younger headline acts might spring from, pledged to redress the gender imbalance across their lineups. Strides have been made , notably at Latitude and Glastonbury, with a handful of smaller festivals either achieving parity or narrowing the gap substantially. A recent survey, however, found that in the UK this summer, a paltry 13% of festival headliners were female , which is just one of the many things in the world right now that makes you want to head-butt a bass bin in impotent fury.

It’s not like an indie rock phenomenon hasn’t been snowballing right under festival bookers’ noses. This summer, she has already wowed crowds at Glastonbury and Latitude. But waiting for her closeup is Phoebe Bridgers , a four-time Grammy-nominated artist who has just swiftly sold out four nights at Brixton’s generously proportioned Academy (that’s in the region of 19,600 tickets) as part of an extended European tour that included opening for the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park. Her merch queue clogs up the entire foyer, upstairs and down. Her singing – winsome, numinous, but tough at the same time – is often drowned out by the word-perfect crowd.

After making waves with her debut, 2017’s Stranger in the Alps , Bridgers’s second outing, Punisher , hit hard on release in long-ago 2020. It has only kept growing in significance, appearing on virtually every albums of the year list in 2020 and winning the LA native celebrity endorsers. Elton John said he’d “hit someone” if she didn’t win a Grammy; Taylor Swift has been effusive in her praise of Bridgers – and collaborated with her .

Bridgers’s very newest song, Sidelines , is a subtle slow-burner about the anaesthetic of depression wearing off in the face of love. It came lashed to the soundtrack for the TV serialisation of Conversations With Friends , based on the Sally Rooney novel. Stepping out with the star of Normal People , Paul Mescal , only adds to the quality-zeitgeist swirl around her.

Pretty much every Bridgers gig since Roe v Wade was overturned has found the singer talking about her own experience of abortion, furious at the impact on marginalised women who can’t afford to circumvent restrictions in their home states. Tonight is no exception. The “voice of a generation” tag is one that is probably thrown about too liberally, but in an era in which female anomie and solo female singer-songwriters are forces in the ascendant, Bridgers very much has her foot on the monitor of the well-turned melodic confessional.

“I’m actually pretty positive,” she quips, making it clear that fetishising mental ill-health is not her intention in the introduction to Funeral , a song that nailed on Bridgers’s “sad girl” maven status. (“Jesus Christ,” it goes, “I’m so blue all the time.”)

She grabs an adoring audience by the lapels from the off tonight with Motion Sickness , an old song about her power-imbalanced relationship with alt country singer Ryan Adams , 20 years her senior, who provided an “in” to the industry, but at a price. Shortly after comes a crowd-pleaser off Punisher : Kyoto is a breezy tune in which Bridgers, on tour in Japan, ponders her vexed relationship with her unimpressive father. She dedicates the song to the dads in the audience – a fan subset whose number is greater than you might have expected.

Phoebe Bridgers performs at the Brixton Academy, London. 26/7/22

For all the generational sadness that fuels her songs, there’s a lot going on in Bridgers’s body of work that leaps demographics. With a wink, her tour is called the Reunion tour, a reference to old bands getting back together. She often hitches her melodies to churning guitars that locate her firmly in the indie rock continuum; the excellent trumpet work by JJ Kirkpatrick adds a stately lushness tonight, fleshing out her sound. Bridgers’s grasp of the wider rock canon percolates away in the background. Her songs are very contemporary, but many old dudes are here in cameo. On the lovelorn Moon Song , her characters agree about Eric Clapton and argue over John Lennon. On Smoke Signals , she references the Smiths’ How Soon Is Now?, the death of David Bowie and Thom Yorke (indirectly).

But Bridgers’s devotion to this male pantheon is not total or blind. When she theatrically smashed a guitar on Saturday Night Live in 2021 and David Crosby sniffed his disapproval, she was quick to call him a “little bitch” on Twitter, where she has long been a witty and sincere presence.

Bridgers’s devotion to Elliott Smith , the cult singer-songwriter who took his own life in 2003, does provide a bass-note thrum throughout. She multitracks her vocals, like Smith did. On Punisher ’s title track , she imagines how she would have stalked Smith, becoming one of those over-ardent superfans that artists have to politely placate or risk being labelled jerks. None of this detracts from the originality and immediacy of Bridgers’s warm, keyboard-enhanced sound tonight. The band are dressed as skeletons (a goofy, spooky Bridgers signature), while Bridgers herself is in a cream suit whose waistcoat features a tasselled design of ribs. The songs’ sadness is very much offset by the cleverness of the pop-up-book stage set. During the cathartic finale – I Know the End – Bridgers is joined by her support act, Sloppy Jane , and the 1975’s Matt Healy , screaming as the backdrop visuals burn up.

Bridgers did headline a small London festival, Mirrors, in 2018. She is due to headline a small festival in Iowa next month. But there are bigger, more parched fields crying out for her incisive singalongs and clear-eyed truth-telling.

Six things we learned from Phoebe Bridgers live at Glasgow Barrowland

As the singer-songwriter heads back out on tour, we find out just how cathartic it is to scream in a room full of 2,000 strangers.

Phoebe Bridgers’ long awaited debut UK tour kicked off with two nights in Glasgow’s iconic Barrowlands, and although there was a slightly disappointing lack of boyfriend and Normal People star Paul Mescal in the audience, nothing else was lacking.

So what can we learn from being right up front at Bridgers’ electric second night at the Barras? 1. Bridgers’ fans are nothing if not dedicated

Queuing for the concert began around 10am. Doors were at 7pm. There is no denying that people were desperate for a good view, and who could blame them? Bridgers’ outfit, a sparkly white two piece with beads embroidered onto the shape of a ribcage, was definitely worth seeing up close. It even had a little bow tie just as the final pièce de résistance. 2. A LOT of the fans are not keen on partners’ mothers

In the song ICU, the line: ‘I hate your mom’ was taken very personally by a lot of the crowd. It seems that enough people have dated men with Karen-esque mothers for it to be considered a fairly universal experience now. For all the girls last night who had someone in mind while they screamed that line – stay strong. There’s only so many Christmases and birthdays you have to endure.

3. Phoebe is truly for everyone

Although there were certainly just as many floral dresses as you’d expect, there were also a few outside of the box fans having just as much fun. I spotted a group of young guys who’d have looked more at home at a Metallica concert drying tears after Saviour Complex, and a dad very near the front who knew every word to Punisher. I like to think he was one of the early queuers.

4. Glasgow crowds are perfect to ease performers back into live shows after a long lay-off

After two years of staying inside and fearing crowded spaces, it’s easy to forget just how sublime being in a room full of people singing together can be. Glasgow is famous for crowds that go all in, and this was no exception. Every song was met with excitement, tears, screams, and a crowd so loud at times it was difficult to actually hear Phoebe’s voice. Even despite the nature of the songs being extremely depressing at times, everyone seemed to be having fun the entire time. Bridgers’ said that the crowd had made her laugh during a slow number because, “Usually people wave slowly for a song that’s kinda slow, but you guys were going like, super fast – it just hit me, I was laughing in my head”.

5. Screaming is a very cathartic experience

If you give people an excuse to scream as loudly as they can without consequence, they scream. During the outro of I Know The End, famous for its chaos and Bridgers screaming to see out the album, I expected people to go for it. I did not expect over a minute of 2,000 people letting out all of their pent up anger from the last decade. The Devil himself would have been slightly startled by the noise that was coming out of that room.

6. It always gets better

Critics of Bridgers often argue that she indulges in sadness, with depression, alcoholism and toxic relationships being common motifs in her music, she spoke with the crowd about how writing about these things after the fact helps her deal with what she’s been through, “I wore pyjamas for a year, in a cute way,” she explained during a monologue before Funeral. In the end, the final and most important takeaway from the concert came from Bridgers herself: “I’m never over anything, but, it gets better, is what I’m saying.”

Live reviews

Phoebe Bridgers and her band were amazing. She's one cool songwriter/musician. Seeing her live made me a bigger fan than I already was. I really don't think she knows how talented she is. What would have made a better experience is the fault of the venue. The Constellation Room will oversell tickets for popular acts creating an overcrowded room. If the fire marshal were to have shown up there definitely would have been a problem. There were many people in front me that left because it was too packed. Many more people tried to enter the room and turned around and left after seeing there was no way to fit one more sardine in the can. Shame on The Observatory mgmt.! This is the only knock I have on the place. I love The Observatory. Been there dozens of times. They have the best staff in the business and the amazing experiences far outnumber the not so amazing experiences.

This concert was so beautiful. I loved every second of it. It was her last show with the band she was touring with, so she made it memorable. They ended up playing everything from Stranger in the Alps plus Steamroller and two covers. She finished with Sherly Crow's, If It Makes You Happy. The Pike room was filled with such a warm energy and it looked effortless for her to do it. I met her at the end. She had the sweetest soul. I hope she comes back to the Detroit area again! Definitely keep an eye out for this gem.

Saw Phoebe play at Bottom of the Hill and all I can say is that this was the best show I've ever been to! The talent from Phoebe and her band, as well as Lomelda and Harrison Whitford, was mindblowing! Her performance was even better than what's heard on studio recordings, and she has quite the endearing stage presence. I would jump at the chance to see her again!

Magical show. Breathtaking renditions of all her songs and hysterical commentary in between them. I can’t wait to see her again in June. Magical show. Breathtaking renditions of all her songs and hysterical commentary in between them. I can’t wait to see her again in June.

Arlo Parks on privacy, Phoebe Bridgers and why she cancelled her tour dates: ‘I felt my boundary and pushed past it’

The london-born singer-songwriter earned a legion of fans and the mercury prize following the release of her first album in 2021. now, after a move overseas and a self-imposed withdrawal from the limelight, she tells helen brown about her return to music, article bookmarked.

T hat space helmet was really heavy, I was sweating!” laughs Arlo Parks. She’s recalling shooting the video for “Blades” from her second album, My Soft Machine . “We’d attached the big camera to the top to get those claustrophobic shots and all that weight was pressing down on my neck. But I’ve always loved the video for Radiohead’s “No Surprises” [in which Thom Yorke wore a helmet that gradually filled up with water] and I wanted to give a nod to that influence…”

While Yorke was singing about being trapped in “a job that slowly kills you” back in 1998, Parks’ new song finds her describing “struggling, choking on my words”. The London-born singer-songwriter – who won the Mercury Prize for her debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams – soothed listeners through the latter days of the pandemic with gently jazzy meditations on the simple joy to be found in “feeding a cat or slicing artichoke hearts”.

But, having been so open about her personal life in her songs, she struggled with the “invasive” questions the press threw at her. “Despite me saying that I was uncomfortable, they just kept coming,” she told GQ . She was only 21 at the time, a gentle introvert who hadn’t expected the poems she’d set to music – alone, in an AirBnB – to launch her into the mainstream. Then, last September she cancelled some US shows, saying she felt “exhausted and dangerously low”. A sentiment she expands on new song, ‘I’m Sorry’ on which she complains of “working incessantly, like a wasp, feeling trapped and crazed… it’s really just hard to trust anyone”. No wonder the poor kid wanted to stick a bubble on her head and shut out the noise.

I’d expected her to be more on edge when she phones from a London hotel. But she sounds happy and relaxed to the point of sleepiness – all soft coos and downy giggles. “I’m good, so good,” she assures me, “just having a coffee…” I’ve been warned she’s “not comfortable talking about personal issues surrounding race, sexuality or mental health” and agreed to avoid those topics. So she knows she’s in a safe space. “Although I just came from LA, so I’m feeling London’s a little… grey? I need to adjust to the English spring!”

It’s been a year since Parks moved from Hammersmith (where she was raised as Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho, a name she still uses off stage) to the Los Angeles home she shares with her girlfriend, 27 year old rapper/singer Ashnikko, and their “adorable” black pomapoo, Wednesday. She tells me that California “feels like home – I’m missing it, missing them…” She “still connects to London” because “it’s where my family live, where I first started people-watching, writing and performing music”. But she’s enjoyed “stretching out” into California’s wide, wild horizons.

“I felt the need for a new adventure,” she explains. “I felt a sense of curiosity, wanting to approach my creativity through a different lens. I wanted to meet new people. As a creative person you’re constantly hunting for fresh inspiration and out there I’ve been flooded with a whole new set of sensory experiences, exploring the flora and fauna of a new geography.”

Parks loves to fill her lyrics with references to fruit and flowers, creating sonic still lives – My Soft Machine will probably be 2023’s only release to give rhododendrons a shout-out. In California, she’s been enjoying the “lovely, flowing lilac” of the jacaranda blossom and the “vibrant pink” of its papery bougainvillea, which she admires for “pushing through and thriving” even among the skyscrapers of downtown LA. She’s grateful for the plant’s demonstration that gentleness still has its place.

I never expected this many people to be listening to what I have to say. I’m not the kind of person who ‘always knew this was gonna happen’, y’know?

“We’ve had more rain than is usual,” she says, “so when I was out in the desert for Coachella, the landscape was just bathed in yellow flowers, but when I looked up the mountains were covered in snow.” She pauses, realising she’s forgotten the most important thing: “And the ocean! I’ve never lived by the ocean this way. It’s amazing to swim and sit and reflect and write by the ocean…”

While fellow singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has spoken about the pressure of producing new material to “brand” expectations in America’s corporate songwriting rooms, Parks says she’s “not felt that at all”. Partly because she’s a “notoriously private writer”. She prefers to nurture miniature worlds to maturity – like Terraria – before sharing them. “Any feedback – positive or negative – can throw you off the essence of a song. Keeping your voice, your vision undiluted is important”. In a patriarchal culture, is it also a feminist act? “Definitely!”

The downside of Parks’ self-contained process is that she becomes her own harshest critic. “My drive, ambition, discipline all comes from me. But also my doubt and workaholism. I’m the source of it all.” She admits that she annoys herself when she gets “too caught up in lovely words, like when I was a kid with a thesaurus. I’m always having to ask myself: what’s this song about? Where is it going?” Her conversation can feel a little like that too. The flow of her drowsy-dreamy imagery makes it hard for me to work out if she’s answering my questions.

When British artists hop across the pond, their sound often swells to scale. Does Parks think this has been the case for her? “Definitely,” she says. “[ Collapsed in Sunbeams ] had a sense of minimalism. The drums were always warm. The instrumentation was a soothing salt bath for the words to sit in. There was no abrasive sound. This time I felt a need for adventure, experimentation. I wanted to bring the instrumentation to the forefront.”

Namely, she wanted to be more blunt about her influences, such as Nineties indie and trip hop. She’s a huge fan of Portishead, Yo La Tengo and Paramore. The vibraphone melody and gauzy harmonies of “Pegasus”, featuring radically honest indie-folk superstar Phoebe Bridgers, float over a clattering beat that nods back to Massive Attack. Parks tells me she was particularly pleased with “the distorted My Bloody Valentine guitar sound we used at the end of ‘Puppy’.” It turns out that the metallic grind actually comes from a synth that her producer Buddy Ross was playing.

She says Ross – best known for his work with Frank Ocean, Haim and Bon Iver – “warped [it] to create a chaotic, frenetic balance” to her ethereal vocals. This is particularly effective as the song is addressing a friend’s grief following the death of his mother. Bereavement is one of many dark themes addressed on My Soft Machine . The album opens with a drum-backed spoken word track, over which Parks calmly states: “Almost everyone that I love has been abused/ and I am included/ I feel so much guilt that I could not guard more people from harm.” Yearning for lost innocence, she wishes she were “seven and blameless/ Going over the handlebars/ Pollen sniffling over grazes.” Against the tangy, East Asian semitone twangs of “Impurities”, she expresses gratitude for her ability to “radiate like a star” when her lover embraces “all my impurities, and I feel clean again.”

Without getting too personal, Parks says she wanted to be honest about “the grit, the things that you can’t wash off, that follow you”. But she also wanted to pay tribute to “the people who make you feel radiant, who see there is something in you that is beautiful. I wanted to capture those contrasts, the softness and the machine, the numbness and elation. I feel the polarity.”

Still identifying more as a fan than an artist, Parks admits that her rapid rise to fame has been a little disorienting. “I never expected this many people to be listening to what I have to say, so I feel very humbled by the attention. I’m not the kind of person who ‘always knew this was gonna happen’, y’know?” Backstage at festivals she initially found it “difficult being surrounded by people who inspired me. It’s difficult to feel yourself as being deserving of being among them. Especially people you’ve listened to for a long time. I’ve been listening to Phoebe Bridgers since I was 16.”

She’s recently been describing Bridgers as a big sister and is clearly awed by “the way her influence stretches into so many different pockets of music”. She gushes over the new album by boygenius, the critically adored singer-songwriter supergroup comprising Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, and the female solidarity that make them a revolutionary beacon of frank friendship. Women in the music scene, after all, have too often been set up as rivals. “‘True Blue’ is definitely my favourite of their new songs,” she says. “That line: ‘I can’t hide from you like I hide from myself’ is just… sooo special. They exuded such collective prowess when I saw them at Coachella.”

Although Parks famously says she “can’t dance”, she’s filled My Soft Machine with danceable beats and even includes a line about dancing to Enya. “I still can’t dance,” she laughs. “I haven’t changed! But I love to move intuitively when I’m on stage. I don’t really think about what my body is doing.” In front of an audience, the thoughtful introvert experiences a sudden rush of energy. “I want to jump, stamp, rush up to the barrier. It’s a physical release as well as an emotional one. After a show I’m drenched in sweat and completely spent.” So that although she struggles with insomnia she always sleeps well after a gig. “I come off stage. Eat dinner. Have some tea and watch some silly telly. Then I completely crash out within half an hour.”

When it comes to touring My Soft Machine , Parks is determined to avoid another burnout. Before 2010, most musicians were expected to push through their schedules, with often disastrous consequences for their mental health. But Parks is part of a push back that has seen acts such as Wet Leg, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and Sam Fender all cancel recent shows to prioritise their wellbeing.

“That last tour was too much,” she says. “I felt where my boundary was and I pushed past it. You have to be honest with yourself. If you want a long career you need to take it at the right pace.” And, while at ease with the fact that “my popularity is bound to ebb and flow”, Parks has plans for a long, creative career. “I’d like to write a film script, and a novel at some point,” she says. She wants to enjoy quality time at home, cooking with her “patient” partner then have more adventures.

Would she ever consider trying on that space helmet for real and embarking on some extra-terrestrial travel? She gasp-laughs. “No, no, no, noooo!! That would send me into an existential spiral and I would never be the same again. It sounds terrifying. No thanks. I’ll stick with the fruits and flowers of this planet!”
