What is the difference between South America and Latin America?

The distinction between South America and Latin America can sometimes lead to confusion because these terms refer to different aspects of the continent, and some countries can fall into both categories.

Latin America encompasses all the countries in the Americas where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken, as these languages have their roots in Latin. This includes a total of 20 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Would not agree that all the countries in Latin America are safe to visit. Colombia for example is level 3 reconsider travel – many trouists are being found dead with their bank accounts having been emptied beforehand. Express kidnappings are also becoming more common unfortunately in latin america.

From misty rainforests to mountainous national parks to cities brimming with culture, both Central America and South America boast a variety of destinations that appeal to all types of travelers. Because of this, choosing just one vacation spot from all of the excellent options available can seem daunting. To help, U.S. News ranked the top places to visit in both regions based on factors like scenery, culture, dining and attractions, as well as traveler votes and expert opinions. Argentine Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia is a treat for all travelers, not just those with a penchant for adventure. From its diverse wildlife (such as Magellanic penguins, Andean cats and southern elephant seals) to its majestic Andes Mountains and jaw-dropping glaciers, this region showcases Mother Nature at its best. Even the most amateur of photographers will appreciate the palette of incredible colors on display here. Can't-miss places for first-timers include the Argentine Lake District, Mount Fitz Roy and the Perito Moreno Glacier, which sits 50 miles west of the gateway town of El Calafate.

Chilean Patagonia offers some of South America's most incredible landscapes . The Tierra del Fuego archipelago is a must-visit destination here. These islands are home to storied sites like Cape Horn – the southernmost tip of South America that requires years of experience to expertly sail around – as well as the capital of Porvenir, a small settlement known for its charming Victorian houses and picturesque surroundings. Travelers can also visit the penguin-filled Isla Magdalena, catch a glimpse of humpback whales feeding at Francisco Coloane Marine Park or trek through Torres del Paine National Park, a place so prominent it earned its own spot on this ranking.  

The Galápagos Islands are best known for their colorful creatures, ranging from giant tortoises to blue-footed boobies to penguins. The islands are also famous for helping Charles Darwin develop his theory of natural selection. Today, animals still reign supreme (of the more than 120 islands, islets and rocks that comprise the Galápagos archipelago, only four are inhabited by humans). Getting here will cost you, as the remote islands sit about 600 miles off of the coast of Ecuador. Save up for a luxurious small ship cruise to make the journey almost as memorable as the destination.

Reaching this remote national park in Chilean Patagonia isn't easy, but beholding the ice fields of Grey Glacier and the soaring peaks of the Cuernos del Paine are more than worth the trip. And with 448,000-plus acres of diverse land to explore, visitors will find boredom near impossible in this once-in-a-lifetime destination. Some of Torres del Paine's most popular trails include the challenging W Trek (a multiday feat past stunning lakes, mountains and glaciers) and the easier Mirador Las Torres hike. Before venturing into the wild, be sure to stock up on essentials in a nearby city like Puerto Natales.

Costa Rica is a natural wonderland. The tropical country features volcanoes to hike and lush rainforests to traverse on foot or by zip line. Plus, it boasts a refreshingly laid-back culture. Relaxation seekers can immerse themselves in the "pura vida" lifestyle and bask at the beaches in Guanacaste or along the Nicoya Peninsula's roughly 80 miles of coast. No visit would be complete without walking around historic San José and trying traditional delicacies like picadillo de chicasquil, a hash-like dish made with tree spinach. And to indulge on your vacation, consider staying at one of Costa Rica's all-inclusive resorts .

A bucket list destination for travelers all over the world, this remote island (a Chilean territory) sits more than 2,000 miles off of the coast of Chile and enchants adventurers with its distinctive moai statues. These curious, well-preserved stone statues can be found throughout the island, but to ensure you don't miss the island's must-sees and unique history, hire a local guide to show you Rapa Nui National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also happens to have one of the world's most beautiful beaches ). Of particular note is Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater that boasts 400 statues.

Colorful colonial architecture and stunning beaches come together in this vibrant Colombian city on the Caribbean coast. The popular old town area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features structures that date back to the 16th century, including a roughly 7-mile stretch of walls that helped fend off naval attacks for centuries. Today, the walls provide excellent vantage points for gazing at the city and sea. The nearby Rosario Islands, with their highly regarded beaches and coral reefs, offer equally breathtaking vistas.

With its scenic beaches, leafy mountains and lively nightlife, Rio de Janeiro makes for a fun getaway any time of year. Whether you're looking to attend the city's larger-than-life Carnival celebration (which takes place in February or March) or explore Brazil's gorgeous natural landscape, Rio has it all. While here, don't miss a visit to the renowned landmark Christ the Redeemer, a 98-foot-tall statue of Jesus Christ that sits at the top of Mount Corcovado. After taking in the attraction's sweeping city views, head down to the coast for a stroll on world-famous Ipanema Beach.

Known as "The City of Eternal Spring" for its year-round temperate weather, Medellín is Colombia's second-largest city. Visit the neighborhood of Comuna 13 (once considered one of the most dangerous areas in Medellín) to take in the colorful buildings and artistic graffiti reflecting the city's history. Ride on one of the outdoor escalators in the neighborhood for spectacular views. For a more Technicolor experience, travel to Medellín in August when the city hosts its annual flower festival where visitors can see extravagant flower arrangements on display. Other popular attractions include El Castillo Museum and Gardens, Plaza Botero and the city's many parks.

Overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Belize offers scenic shorelines, unique wildlife and some of Central America's best dive sites. Snorkeling and diving in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Great Blue Hole are major draws, but so are the country's ancient ruins, animal sanctuaries and relaxing beaches. To see Xunantunich and Caracol, two of Belize's best-known Mayan ruins, venture about 75 miles southwest of Belize City to the Cayo District. Meanwhile, nature lovers can visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary or Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, and sun-seekers can head to South Water Caye or the 16-mile Placencia Peninsula for sandy beaches.

Not only does Quito, Ecuador, boast one of the highest elevations in the world among capital cities (9,350 feet above sea level), but the entire city is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take time to get yourself acclimated to the high altitude by admiring the historic city center's buildings, which are some of Latin America's best-preserved and least altered. To learn more about Ecuador and to view an impressive collection of pre-Columbian archaeology and Inca artifacts, peruse the Museo Nacional del Banco Central. When you're ready to climb higher, head to the TelefériQo gondola for unparalleled views of Quito.

The Chilean capital has undergone quite the renaissance since it was founded in the 1500s. You'll discover neoclassical architecture rubbing elbows with modern skyscrapers, plus Spanish and European influences intermingling everywhere. The best way to take in the city's unique style is to walk its streets and barrios (neighborhoods), stopping at attractions like the historical Plaza de Armas – where you'll find the Metropolitan Cathedral and Central Post Office – along the way. Additionally, the area surrounding Santiago features numerous wineries and ski slopes.

It's hard not to fall in love with the wide boulevards, alluring architecture and Parisian-style cafes of Buenos Aires. In addition to its good looks, Argentina's capital city is teeming with culture. Plan to visit its world-class National Museum of Fine Arts, colorful Palermo neighborhood and bustling Corrientes Avenue, where you'll find an array of theaters, bars and tango clubs. Then, head to the upscale Recoleta neighborhood to take in some of Buenos Aires' grandest sites, including El Ateneo Grand Splendid (a converted theater that is now one of South America's most beautiful bookstores) and Recoleta Cemetery.

High in the Andes, the Colombian capital has seen a revival in tourism in recent years. Bogotá has been the cultural center of the country for centuries, offering architecturally interesting buildings that line charming cobblestone streets. To get an overview of the city's rich heritage, travelers should check out the Botero Museum's incredible art and the Gold Museum's priceless treasures. Additional must-dos include exploring the beautiful flora at José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden and climbing Monserrate, an imposing hill with a church and shrine at its peak.

Guatemala features the cultural and natural wonders synonymous with Central America while remaining relatively unspoiled. Adventurers seeking off-the-beaten-path excitement can spend their time traversing misty rainforests, climbing active volcanoes, exploring the turquoise pools of Semuc Champey and zip lining over Lake Atitlán. As a digital nomad who works and travels full time, I spend a good portion of the year in South America. The first city I visited was Buenos Aires, and it immediately stole my heart — it is arguably one of the best cities on the continent . Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to explore beyond Argentina, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay; Peru will be added to that list in the coming months.

South America has unlimited things to offer, from beautiful beaches and mountainside villages to world-class cuisine and two of the New 7 Wonders of the World . With the help of Elisban Huarancca, an official tourism guide in Peru , Eva Castro, owner of Creo Ecolodge Jardin Project in Antioquia, Colombia, and Alexander Balardjischvili, CEO of C2Rio Tours & Travel , we’ve compiled a list of the 25 best places to visit in South America.

Jardín, Antioquia, Colombia

Jardín is a small town a few hours south of Medellín with colonial architecture, beautiful scenery, and lots to do. Castro of Creo Ecolodge, where I stayed during my trip to Jardín, gave plenty of recommendations for things to do while you’re in town. Take a tour of Cueva del Esplendor, or Cave of Splendor, where you'll find a beautiful waterfall, or head to a nearby coffee farm to learn how Colombian coffee is produced. My favorite is Cafe Historias , which has some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.  Castro says the best time of year to visit is August and September when there are very few travelers. This is also when the annual Jardin Film Festival takes place. It gets much busier in town from December through April, Castro says.

Cocora Valley, Salento, Colombia

Due west of Bogota is Cocora Valley, one of Colombia's most famous hiking destinations. You can take a day trip from the nearby town of Salento or do a multi-day hike throughout the valley. There are campsites available for use if you choose to spend the night looking at the stars. It’s famous for having the tallest palm trees in the world, which stand at over 195 feet tall and can live up to 200 years. The almost oversaturated green colors of the hills are stunning. Castro highly recommends going at "golden hour" — early in the morning or late in the afternoon — for the best views.

The Lost City, Magdalena, Colombia

The Lost City, or Ciudad Perdida in Spanish, is located near Santa Marta in northern Colombia. It’s estimated to have been founded in the 8th or 9th centuries, making it hundreds of years older than Machu Picchu. It was home to anywhere between 1,400 to 3,000 people and about 170 terraces, with apparent spaces for living, working, and religious practice. You’ll have to do a three- to six-day trek with a tour company to get there. On the way, you will see rare native plants and wildlife, which is an adventure in itself. 

The Rock of Guatapé, Guatapé, Colombia

Guatapé is a town in northern Colombia, directly east of Medellín, and it’s famous for The Rock of Guatapé, which is reached via more 740 steps. At the end of your climb, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the town and different islands in Guatapé Lake. The town is reachable via a bus ride that's less than two hours from Medellín, making it a perfect weekend trip.  “The people here are more welcoming and warm,” says Castro. “When you are walking, you can find many smiling faces... It’s part of our culture.”

San Rafael, Antioqua, Colombia

San Rafael is excellent “if you really want to have the deepest connection with yourself and with nature,” says Castro. She recommends Vanadurga Ashram , a yoga sanctuary, if you want to practice yoga while you're here. “These places are really magical, and you can learn how to change your perspective," Castro adds.

San Rafael is known for its natural beauty, including mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. You can bird watch, hike, or simply soak in nature. “People want to come to have an inner journey,” says Castro. “If that’s your goal — to find out something inside of you — I’d recommend places like San Rafael.”

Cusco, Peru

If you are interested in Inca ruins, Cusco is the perfect place. Churches, museums, and winding streets here will leave you charmed. “Travelers to Peru should know that they will face a diverse and colorful culture, with very warm and very friendly people,” says Huarancca. “Also, understand that they will face different flavors that will help them experience every second of their trip.” Cusco makes a great starting point to reach Machu Picchu. Many travelers spend a few days here exploring and acclimating to the 11,150-foot elevation. (In comparison, Denver has an elevation of 5,280 feet.)

Machu Picchu, Peru

Arguably one of the most famous places in the world, Machu Picchu is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The site was initially an Inca citadel, likely built in the 1450s and often called “The Lost City of the Incas.” Machu Picchu is about 50 miles from Cusco; from there, you’ll take a train to Aguas Calientes and then a bus to the site. You cannot visit without a tour guide, so make reservations well in advance.  “The visit to Machu Picchu can be all year round; different climatic factors help to understand the mysterious nature of Machu Picchu,” says Huarancca. “But if you are looking for dates with little rain, it is well suited from April to the end of October.”

Lake Titicaca, Peru

Lake Titicaca is the largest of South America's freshwater lakes, as well as the world's highest navigable lake. It’s an estimated three million years old, and there are man-made islands constructed of layers of tortora roots and reeds. The number of islands varies at any given time but is usually somewhere between f40 to 60. You will have some of the best views in the Andes from this place, and it is extremely important to Peruvian and Bolivian indigenous communities.

Rainbow Mountain, Vinicunca, Peru

Close to Cusco in the Andes Mountains is Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain because of the colorful stripes on display year-round. The colors result from different mineral layers that were combined with melted ice to create rows of reds, yellows, purples, and greens.

The Amazon Rainforest, Peru

The Amazon Rainforest spans eight countries and is almost 2.6 million square miles in size. You can visit the Peruvian Amazon from three areas: Manu National Park, Tambopata Province, and the city of Iquitos. Each provides something unique to tourists. The best option depends on what you want to see, how much time you can spend, and your budget.  “The only recommendation I can give to international travelers is to make reservations in advance and have good information about the places you will visit,” says Huarancca. “It is necessary to find out the type of food, drinks, and traditions that place has.”

Huacachina, Peru

Huarancca recommends visiting Huacachina, “a small oasis in the middle of the desert.” Located south of Lima and near the city of Ica, Huacachina is a desert village complete with rolling sand dunes on all sides. You can't swim in Huacachina Lagoon, but you can rent paddle boats to glide across the water. It’s the only natural oasis in all of South America, formed by underground aquifers.

Colca Canyon, Peru

Colca Canyon is another tourist attraction in Peru that you should not miss, according to Huarancca. It’s one of the world’s deepest canyons (twice as deep as the Grand Canyon) and you can take a day trip from Arequipa to see it or a multi-day trek for the most spectacular views. Either way you're likely to see plenty of native wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia

Bolivia is home to the largest salt flat in the world, originally a prehistoric lake that went dry. Now Uyuni Salt Flat is around 4,200 square miles of striking white salt and rock formations. If you visit between December and April, which is the rainy season, you may see bright pink flamingos. Many people who have visited when water is on the ground describe the experience as walking on a cloud, since the sky is reflected in the water. Book a room at Kachi Lodge , which is set right on the flat, for a very special stay.

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a must-see for anyone heading to Brazil. The statue of Jesus stands almost 125 feet tall and looks over Rio de Janeiro . When visiting the marvel, you can expect phenomenal views of the city. Balardjischvili recommends taking the train to see the statue and to book that ticket in advance.

Pantanal Wetland, Brazil

Measuring more than 40 million acres, Pantanal Wetland is the biggest wetland on Earth. Jaguars and crocodiles are just two of its residents — with more than 4,700 plant and animal species, it’s one of the most biodiverse destinations on the planet. Balardjischvili recommends “bringing insect repellent, a light raincoat, and a sweatshirt — and always hydrate.”

The Imperial City of Petropolis, Brazil

Petropolis is a mountain resort outside of Rio de Janeiro known for its palaces, architecture, and food. “Visit Petropolis on a guided tour to enjoy the historical aspect," Balardjischvili says. "Always book your tour on legalized companies with good reviews."

Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Sugarloaf Mountain is a major landmark in Brazil, well known for the panoramic city views guests get at the top. The cable car system here opened in 1912; it was the first in Brazil and the third in the world. “For Sugarloaf, visit it in the morning, as it is fresher; sunset is beautiful but extremely crowded," says Balardjischvili. "If you are traveling during the high season, buy a skip-the-line ticket." The mountain peak sits almost 1,300 feet in the air, so you’ll be grateful you don’t have to climb all the way up. 

When asked about the best time of year to visit Rio de Janeiro, Balardjischvili says May or June, when "you’ll enjoy beautiful sunny days with no rain and 77 degrees.”

Buenos Aires, Argentina

One of my favorite cities in the world is Buenos Aires , where you can find anything from tango shows and street art to the best steak you’ll ever eat. Each neighborhood has something special. Head to La Boca for beautiful murals along the streets, then tour the famous cemetery in Recoleta before stopping at a speakeasy in Palermo. There’s no shortage of fantastic things to do here, and the city makes a wonderful home base for seeing more of Argentina.

Zuccardi Valle de Uco is an award-winning winery that I had the opportunity to visit this past January. It certainly lives up to its reputation, with fantastic wines and the Andes as a stunning backdrop to the property's extensive vineyards. Reservations for tastings and tours can be made online.

Iguazú Falls, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Located on the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguazú Falls is comprised of about 275 individual waterfalls, making it the largest waterfall system in the world. Most of the waterfalls are on the Argentina side, but the tallest is on the Brazil side. It’s a stunning sight to behold and an absolute must for anyone traveling through South America.

Patagonia, Argentina

Patagonia is larger than many countries around the world and is split between Argentina and Chile. You can expect each city in the region to feel unique; some of the most popular ones in Argentinian Patagonia are El Calafate, Ushuaia, and El Chaltén. Whether you go to Patagonia Brewery in San Carlos de Bariloche or hike one of the 300 glaciers throughout the region, you will surely have an experience you’ll never forget.

Punta del Este Beaches, Uruguay

Uruguay is still relatively underrated, but it is a fantastic place for international travelers. It takes just a couple of hours by ferry to get from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. From there, it’s about a two-hour drive to Punta del Este, which has some of the best beaches in the country, plus high-end shopping and fantastic steakhouses.

Valparaíso, Chile

Valparaíso is located on the coast of Chile and is less than a two-hour drive from Santiago. It’s famous for its colorful homes and for being the home of renowned poet and diplomat Pablo Neruda. It’s also connected to Viña del Mar, where you'll find some of Chile's top beaches. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site with excellent architecture and many things to discover.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galápagos Islands are perfect for nature lovers. Visitors can learn about the archipelago's unique biodiversity, go scuba diving, lounge on beaches, or embark on a multi-island cruise. You might also swim with sea lions or hang out with giant turtles.

Easter Island, Chile

Easter Island is a Chilean territory in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. It’s known for the nearly 900 stone statues of human figures, called moai , that you'll find here. The statues are believed to have been created over time, from the 11th century to some time in the 17th century. From Santiago, it’s about a 5.5-hour flight to reach the island.

Latin America is a rich, vibrant, diverse region, welcoming millions of international tourists each year. It encompasses 33 countries and nearly 13% of the Earth’s total land area. The best part? There’s SO much to discover here and if you’re planning to visit for the first time, the sheer amount of information can actually be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve done most of the research for you and narrowed down a list of some of the best places to visit in Latin America, to make your trip planning easier. H ere are the 12 best places to visit in Latin America this year…

12. Belize City, Belize

Belize City is a port city in Central American Belize and one of the most loved Latin America travel destinations. It’s also the historical capital of the nation and part of its charm comes from its colonial houses, sailboats from Haulover Creek, as well as its lively shopping areas.

Love street markets? Take a walk through the centre, where you’ll see street hawkers selling everything from handmade jewellery, wood carvings and other souvenirs. And if you’re a nature lover, visit the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, which provides refuge for thousands of migratory and resident birds. We also recommend stopping by the Community Baboon Sanctuary, around 30 miles away from the city, in a small Kriol village.

The Yucatan Peninsula is one of the most popular beach destinations in Latin America, bringing in millions of sun-seeking tourists each year. The area encapsulates parts of Belize and Guatemala, as well as three separate Mexican states: Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche.

10. Antigua, Guatemala

Antigua is a famous Spanish colonial city in Central America, surrounded by volcanoes. While the small city was mainly destroyed by earthquakes in the 17th century, a large portion of it was rebuilt and many historical buildings have since been renovated.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site back in 1979 because of its living traces of Spanish culture, its Baroque-style architecture, as well as its many Christian churches and monasteries.

9. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ah, Rio de Janeiro, the home of samba, bossa nova music, incredible beaches and the inspiration of songs worldwide. How could we not include it in this list?

There are so many exciting things to see and do in Rio de Janeiro, but probably the best ones to include on your list are: Tijuca National Park, a day-trip to Ipanema Beach, taking a cable car up to Sugar Loaf Mountain and dancing the night away in Lapa, one of the most effervescent neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. A must-see is the Christ the Redeemer statue. This iconic landmark is also considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. We couldn’t agree more.

8. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni in southwest Bolivia is currently the largest salt flat in the world, also known for its crowds of pink flamingos. Stretching over more than 4,000 square miles of the Altiplano, it’s definitely one of the most important places to visit in South America.

How to get to Salar de Uyuni

There are multiple options available for reaching the Bolivian salt flats. The most common means of transport are bus, train or plane to Uyuni – the nearest town to the salt flats’ location. If you’re coming from Argentina, the best starting point is Tupiza, which is approximately 200km away from Uyuni. If you’re traveling with a tour operator, your tour manager will most likely drive you to the border, after which a Bolivian operator would take over the tour.

7. Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

Our 7th spot on our best places to visit in Latin America list is taken by Torres del Paine National Park in Chile’s Patagonia region. The beautiful landscapes attract travel photographers from around the world, thanks to the imposing glaciers and stunning sunsets the lagoon.

Photographers aren’t the only ones interested in this natural beauty, though. With so many experiences and activities, this is the perfect place for adventure-seekers. From hiking to boating and horseback riding, this amazing park has a little bit of everything for everyone.

How much does it cost to get into Torres del Paine?

Starting from January 1, 2020, the entrance fee for a foreign adult is CLP $25,000, the entrance fee for a foreign teenager (12-17 years old) is CLP $12,500 and a ticket to stay more than 3 days for foreigners is CLP $35,000. You won’t find ATMs at the entrance of Torres del Paine Park and they don’t accept credit cards / debit cards, which means you’ll need to bring cash with you.

How to get to Torres del Paine… 

The easiest way to reach Torres del Paine is to fly from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, and from there either take a bus or rent a car to Puerto Natales. The entire journey should take around 4.5 hours.

6. The Galapagos Islands

This volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean isn’t just one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ecuador, it’s also one of the most important destinations for wildlife sightings.  The Galapagos’ fame comes from Charles Darwin, who visited the islands in 1835. His observations about the species he discovered inspired his theory of evolution. No big deal.

The birth of the Galapagos islands came from volcanic upheavals which erupted from the bottom of the sea. The entire archipelago consists of 19 islands and a number of islets and rocks which cover an area of around 17,000 square miles across the ocean. Since 1959, Galapagos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Ecuador’s first national park, bringing in roughly 250,000 tourists each year, so be sure to book your trip in advance!

5. The Sacred Valley, Peru

Sacred Valley is one of the most-visited regions of Peru and if you haven’t added it to your travel checklist yet, then you need to rectify the situation ASAP.  It’s buzzing with Incan history, ancient ruins and unique natural landscapes, all of which contribute to its mystery and charm.

Iguazú Falls or Iguaçu Falls are a set of waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. This magnificent site sits at an elevation of 7,710 feet (2,350 metres) between two sharp mountain peaks: Machu Picchu (‘Old Peak’) and Huayna Picchu (‘New Peak’).

The main access point is Cusco. From there, tourists need to reach Aguas Calientes, which is accessible either by trek, train or a combination of bus and walking. If you’re interested in booking a trip there, it’s important to note that tickets must be purchased in advance and are usually included in the cost of your tour or trek.

Environmentalists will enjoy the well-conserved Pantanal in Brazil, while shoppers can choose between upscale boutiques in big cities like Rio de Janeiro or the colorful markets of Andean villages. You can explore lost cities of ancient civilizations, feast your eyes on stunning scenery almost everywhere you go or you can feast your taste buds on the cuisine.

21. Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is a major city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. It was founded by the Spanish in 1533, who named it after Cartagena, Spain. During Spain’s domination in South America, the city was the center of politics and the economy.

Cartagena is a quite modern city today, but you’ll find walled historic center and the fortress, deemed the largest fortifications in South America, that defended it. Cartagena has a rich cultural scene, with festivals throughout the year; museums and art galleries.

20. Salvador, Brazil

Salvador da Bahia, also known as just Salvador, has several things going for it. The Portuguese founded it in 1548, so it’s one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. You’ll see its rich past in Pelourinho, the historic center named for the whipping post where slaves were beaten.

Brazil’s third largest city was also the first slave port in the Americas; traces of this African heritage can be found in the local culture today, especially the cuisine. Salvador also is a party town, hosting the world’s largest party: its annual Carnival celebration.

19. Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina

They don’t do things in a small way in Los Glaciares National Park. Not only is the park the largest national park in Argentina, it is home to the largest ice cap outside of Greenland and Antarctica – an ice cap that feeds 47 large glaciers. The most famous of these is the Perito Moreno glacier; unique among glaciers because it is advancing while others are receding.

The park also is home to Lake Argentino, the largest in the country. The park also is known for its ecology and biodiversity with the well-conserved Magellan Subpolar forest and Patagonian Steppe.

18. Pantanal, Brazil

The Pantanal can be difficult to get to – access is mostly by plane or boat – but once you get there…Oh! The Pantanal, located mostly in Brazil (some is in Bolivia and Paraguay), is the world’s largest tropical wetland, encompassing an area the size of Washington State.

While not as famous as its sister wetlands in the Amazon, the Pantanal is the best place in South America to see wildlife, ranging from jaguars to capybaras.

17. Ushuaia, Argentina

If you like to visit remote places, then put Ushuaia on your bucket list. The capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia is considered the southernmost city in the world. Indeed, the train to the End of the World ends here.

Nestled among the mountains along a bay, Ushuaia is very picturesque when it’s not cloudy or windy, which is much of the time. The former penal colony has a museum and it’s a good place to see penguins, orca whales and seals.

16. Tayrona National Park, Colombia

When protecting the environment and its inhabitants while enjoying stunning views is on your top list, you’re sure to enjoy Tayrona National Park on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

The country’s second most visited national park, Tayrona is a protected marine reserve that takes in both land and sea. You’ll find great biodiversity in the flora and fauna here. Wildlife includes 300 species of birds, more than 100 different mammals and 70 kinds of bats.

Tayrona is probably best known for its spectacular beaches, which are set in deep bays, backed by mountains and shaded by coconut palms. Because of strong current however most beaches are not suitable for swimming.

15. Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador’s capital, Quito, is unique among world capitals. It is the highest capital in the world (La Paz is higher but isn’t Bolivia’s legal capital) and also closest to the equator. Founded by the Spanish in 1534, Quito’s colorful old town is one of the best-preserved, least changed and largest in all the Americas.

Located in Ecuador’s northern highlands, the city is surrounded by volcanoes that can be seen on a clear day. Quito is the only world capital that is threatened by active volcanoes.

14. Colca Canyon, Peru

There’s a reason Colca Canyon is the third most visited tourist destination in Peru: stunning views. The canyon is one of the deepest in the world, but not the deepest in Peru, though it is more than twice as deep as the U.S. Grand Canyon.

If you get tired of scenic views, you can feast your eyes on the sky where you may see Andean condors and the biggest hummingbirds you’ve ever seen. Villages are a good place to buy local handcrafts.

13. Atacama Desert, Chile

The Atacama Desert is unique: It’s the driest non-polar desert in the world, maybe only raining once every four years. It stretches about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) along the coast of Chile, situated between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean.

The soil is comparable to that found on Mars; portions stood in for Mars in the movie, Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets. Vast salt flats, active geysers and intense blue lagoons are just a few of the extraordinary features of this region.

12. Angel Falls, Venezuela

Angel Falls is most definitely a scene stealer in Venezuela’s Guayana Highlands. It is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world – 15 times higher than Niagara Falls, which is shared by Canada and the United States. Water cascades more than 950 meters (3,200 feet) down Auyantepu Mountain into the Rio Kerepacupai Meru.

The waterfall is named for American Jimmy Angel who, in 1937, became the first pilot to fly over the falls. Getting there is an adventure involving plane and river boat rides.

11. Cusco, Peru

Cusco has a colorful historic past Located at 3,400 meters (11,000 feet) in elevation in the Andes Mountains, Cusco was once the capital of the mighty Inca Empire. Then, in the 16th century, it was conquered by the Spanish, who pretty much decimated the Incas.

Though not the national capital, Peru’s constitution names it the historical capital of the country. Remains of many Inca sites can be found in the surrounding area while the Spanish colonial heritage can be found in the Old Town.

10. Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Situated in the Andes nearly 3,700 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level, Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat. Located in southwest Peru, the salt flat is covered by a thick crust, which provides salt and covers a brine.

The salt flat is as flat as you can get and with the harsh terrain looks otherwordly, especially after rain when the Salar turns into a giant mirror. One of the most unusual places to visit in South America, it’s also a major breeding ground for flamingos.

9. Lake Titicaca, Peru & Bolivia

Lake Titicaca, South America’s largest lake, straddles the border of Bolivia and Peru. At an elevation of just over 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), it is considered the highest navigable lake in the world, though there are smaller lakes higher than this one.

Many of its 41 islands are inhabited, including the floating islands the natives make with heavy reeds. About 500 species of aquatic life live in the lake, which has a large population of water birds. Local belief says the sun was born at Lake Titicaca.

8. Easter Island, Chile

Getting to Easter Island can be time-consuming, since it is the most remote inhabited island in the world. The nearest inhabitants are almost 1,300 miles away. But it’s not its remoteness this Chilean territory is noted for. It’s what you’ll see when you get there: almost 900 primitive statues carved by early Polynesian inhabitants.

These awesome statues, called moai, may have been carved about 1,000 years ago. Most statues were carved from solidified volcanic ash, with obsidian being used for the black eyes.

7. Amazon Rainforest

If you lived long enough to count that high, you could count 390 billion trees in the Amazon rainforest. This statistic is mind-boggling, to be sure, but then the Amazon rainforest is one awesome piece of real estate, covering about ¾ of the Amazon River basin.

It is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Sixty percent of the rainforest is located in Brazil with sizeable chunks in Peru and Columbia; bordering countries have small shares. For sure, the rainforest is loaded with unique flora and fauna.

6. Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

It may be located in remote Chilean Patagonia, but Torres del Paine National Park is one of Chile’s largest and most visited parks. Why? Well, the scenery is pretty spectacular.

The Torres del Paine (Paine means blue in the local indigenous language) is just one awesome sight you’ll see. The three peaks dominate the landscape in the Paine Mountains. Besides mountains, the park is dotted with glaciers, rivers, forests and steppe, making it a hit with outdoors enthusiasts. The park also is home to an endangered species of deer.

5. Buenos Aires, Argentina

With 17 million people, Buenos Aires has the fourth largest population in the Americas. Located on the Rio de la Plata on the Argentinian coast, the city is noted for its cosmopolitan flair.

Because of its architecture and rich cultural life, Buenos Aires is the most visited city in South America. A must-see here is the Recoleta, a residential neighborhood known for its history. The Recoleta Cemetery is the district’s most famous attraction; it’s where Eva Peron is buried.

4. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

If you want to get a glimpse of what prehistoric animals may have looked like, head to the Galapagos Islands. The animals are like no other place on earth, and include giant tortoises and scary-looking iguanas.

They were the impetus for Charles Darwin’s controversial 19th century book, On the Origin of Species. This archipelago of 18 major islands, about 900 km (550 miles) off the coast of Ecuador, was formed – and are still being formed – by volcanic action.

3. Iguazu Falls, Brazil & Argentina

One of the best places to visit in South America, Iguazu Falls have to be seen to be appreciated as mere words cannot do them justice. They truly live up to their name, which translates as “big water:” They’re the world’s largest waterfalls system, with 275 waterfalls of various sizes – Devil’s Throat is the biggest.

For much of its journey to the ocean, the Iguazu River flows through Brazil, but, seemingly in a spirit of international cooperation, most of the falls are in Argentina.

2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When you visit Rio de Janeiro you simply must take a samba lesson; even The Girl from Ipanema does the samba, Rio’s most popular dance. Besides the samba, this cosmopolitan city is known for its Carnival, the bossa nova, and Copacabana Beach.

Its most famous landmark may be the Christ the Redeemer statue that sits atop Corcovado Mountain. Rio hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics, though its residents overwhelmingly prefer soccer: Maracana Stadium is one of the largest soccer stadiums in the world.

1. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is a magnificent representation of the Inca civilization before the Spanish came. Nestled in the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu served as a palace for the emperor, a fortress and as a site for religious ceremonies where human sacrifices were made to appease the gods.

Untouched by the Spanish, the site was abandoned after the conquest, only to be “discovered” by an American professor in the early 1900s. Built from polished stones, Machu Picchu is a fascinating example of classical Inca architecture. With its spectacular views, Machu Picchu is Peru’s most visited tourist attraction.

The Pantanal (Brazil)

The world’s largest contiguous freshwater wetland, the Pantanal environment is in stark contrast to the tree filled rainforest of the Amazon. Despite this, wildlife abounds with many species hard to spot in the dense rainforest seen here with relative ease. Animals have adapted to the wide open spaces in fantastic ways. This includes capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which in the rainforest occurs in small groups but are found on the Pantanal in vast herds.

Cusco & Machu Picchu (Peru)

The nearby Choquequirao, also known as the Cradle of Gold, was then built to rival Machu Picchu and provides a great alternative trek.

Cusco then provides a base to visit the nearby Manu National Park region , the largest and most pristine park in the country.

Andean Cloud Forest

One of the world’s most diverse and threatened ecosystems, the forests of the Andes show off an incredible amount of animals and plants found nowhere else on Earth. The altitude here creates the environment for fantastic animals, including many different hummingbirds, capuchin monkeys, butterflies, weird and wonderful plants, including different orchids, and Peru’s national bird, the brightly colored cock of the rock.

One of the best places to visit cloud forest to see fascinating wildlife is the Andean slope of Peru’s Manu National Park and its surrounding region. Here you can enjoy being close to the cock of the rock display ground, where the birds perform courtship dances to attract their mates.

Easter Island (Chile)

One of the planet’s most culturally and historically fascinating areas, Easter island is dotted with giant stone statues called ‘Moai’ as if to symbolise the power and ability of their now silent tribes.

This UNESCO listed World Heritage Site is one of the world’s most remote islands. Aside from land-based activities, the coastal area is home to marine life you can enjoy on snorkeling or diving tours.

You can reach Easter Island from Chile, although even from here it’s a 3,700km flight to the east. You can imagine why the colonisation and civilization of Easter island was an incredible achievement and as the civilization once flourished, it makes the demise all the more mysterious.

This now mostly treeless landscape was once home to forests with the local groups perishing due to a combination of invasive species and over-exploitation of resources, as if a testament to our future if we repeat the same environmental errors.

Iguazu Falls (Argentina & Brazil)

Brushing against the tropics, Iguazu Falls is an awe-inspiring attraction and one of the world’s few spectacular waterfalls. Located mainly in Argentina with about 20% across Brazil, this giant semicircular cascading waterfall reaches across 2,700 meters and is 80 meters high.

The waterfall is surrounded by pristine subtropical rainforest filled with different monkeys, jaguar, and caiman crocodiles. The main areas to access the falls are Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina.

Protected by both the Iguazú National Park in Argentina and the Brazilian Iguaçu National Park, both of these parks are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the falls themselves are regarded as one of the world’s 7 natural wonders.

You can visit different sections of the incredible falls by walking the upper and lower circuits to get some great views. In addition to these circuits, you can also take a picturesque train ride around the falls for some fantastic photographs.

One of the most famous ‘rainforest-meets-beach’ destinations, Costa Rica draws thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the idyllic beaches and fantastically diverse tropical forests.

The scenery and landscape of Costa Rica is remarkable. With crater lakes, waterfalls, lush rainforests, volcano backdrops, misty cloud forests, and beautiful beaches, Costa Rica makes a fantastic tropical getaway for an adventurous vacation or simply a relaxed escape from a busy life.

Mexico is a fantastic destination to visit due to its diversity of attractions, both natural and cultural. Enjoy beautiful beaches, diverse tropical rainforest, fantastic festivals, colonial towns and architecture, and the ancient Maya and Aztec ruins.

Because of this incredible diversity the country contains many UNESCO World Heritage Listed Sites, such as the famous Mayan city of Chichen Itza. Making for a movie-style archeological adventure, there are many ruins dotted around the country with some hidden by tropical rainforest.

Festivities in the country are also fantastic with one of the most famous being the Dia de Muertos or the day of the dead, which lasts for a few days from October 31. Mexico City then celebrates Festival de México in mid March and there are many more throughout the year. The festivities are always great events with music, dancing, and costumes.

Mexico city and especially its historical center are worth a visit to see the colonial architecture and to enjoy fantastic restaurants, bars, cafes, galleries, and museums. Another attractive and popular destination for a colonial style city is Guanajuato in the country’s center.

You can stay at very comfortable rainforest lodges to explore the surrounding animals and plants. Enjoy the 1.9 million hectare Lacandon Jungle, which stretches from Chiapas into northern Guatemala. Animals you can find here include famous macaws, toucans, several different monkeys, tapir, and jaguar.

The Cerrado (Brazil)

The Cerrado is a mostly unheard of region despite covering around 20% of Brazil. The Cerrado is a tropical savanna area home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including tool-using capuchin monkeys, elegant maned wolves, and blue hyacinth macaws.

Enjoy touring the environment to see incredible scenery of an area that once extended over a territory half the size of the European continent. The savannah offers ravines and cliffs to create a dramatic and adventurous scenery, which is filled with the above mentioned wildlife and much more. This incredible environment contains many large mammals, such as the maned wolves mentioned above, but also jaguar, deer, and giant anteater.

In addition to the mammals, among the gnarled trees and savanna’s 10,000 or so plant species (50% are endemic), you can find an incredible diversity of bird life. This includes a number of critically endangered species, such as Spix’s macaw.

The Caribbean

The famous tropical getaway to relax on stereotypical island beaches among waving palm trees and glistening tropical waters, the Caribbean continues to draw thousands of visitors each year. Choose from many destinations, from the caribbean coast of Central America, the magnificent Colombian cities of Santa Marta and Cartagena, Jamaica, the Florida Keys, and the new tourism hot spot of Cuba.

For some real tropical island experience on the Caribbean, you can choose the Virgin Islands, Dominica, Aruba, Bahamas, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, St. Martin, Turks & Caicos, Curacao, and Barbados.

Each of the areas offers a little different taste of life in the Caribbean but all feature the iconic feel and tropical beaches. With a diversity of colonial pasts and nations, enjoy a diversity of cultural influences across cuisine, architecture, and people.

Angel Falls (Venezuela)

We couldn’t really complete this list without mentioning the fantasised destination of Disney’s animated movie ‘Up.’ Angel Falls is the world’s largest uninterrupted waterfall at 3,212 feet. With combining this with Iguazu mentioned before, there are few others that can compete with these in terms of grandeur.

The most famous and frequently visited tourist site in Venezuela, you can see the UNESCO World Heritage listed waterfall by taking scheduled boat tours to the falls on the Carrao River from the city of Canaima. The falls can be visited when the waters are at the best, which is from June to December. You can also enjoy the incredible view from helicopter, which provides the same jaw dropping experience as the pilot after whom the falls were named.

We’re especially excited about Guatemala , which is experiencing a rebirth in the post-pandemic travel era. And in the Brazilian Amazon , newfound government support for sustainable tourism initiatives means that it’s easier than ever to make a positive impact through travel.

Our expert travel designers have been busy researching. On trips from Ushuaia to Tikal , and almost everything in between, they’ve been able to hand-pick the best places to visit in Latin America in 2024. Our list includes perennial classics that brim with brand new experiences and opportunities to reach lesser-visited regions, and also features more recent favourites that we predict will be positively shaping luxury travel in 2024 and beyond.

Guatemala ’s tourism sector is growing quickly in the post-pandemic travel era, with airlines adding new routes to the country and millions of visitors expected to arrive this year. Even so, it’s still a relatively underexplored destination – which means you’ll find plenty of authentic experiences, uncrowded archaeological sites and opportunities for customised excursions.

Start in the charming city of Antigua with a bespoke tour of its historical sites, museums, restaurants and small businesses. Guatemala is renowned for its textiles, chocolate and coffee, and you can see first-hand how each of these artisanal products is made. We suggest staying at El Convento , an elegant hotel that reflects the colonial history of Antigua.

To witness a one-of-a-kind cultural event, plan your trip to coincide with All Saints’ Day on 1st November. This is when Guatemala’s Kite Festival takes place, with colourful kites filling the skies to honour deceased loved ones. The magnificence of Brazil is no secret, with many travellers flocking to the cosmopolitan hubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo . But while these cities, and the country’s gorgeous beaches, are certainly worth visiting, in 2024 we’ll also be exploring the lesser-known locations scattered throughout this massive country.

Many of our favourite destinations in Brazil strike a balance between protecting the incredible natural environment while also offering amazing experiences. In the country’s interior you’ll find one of the world’s largest wetland areas –  the Pantanal – and the remote refuge of Casa Caiman . From this environmentally conscious hotel, set at the heart of a 53,000-hectare oasis, you can spot jaguars in the wild with the Onçafari conservation project.

Farther north, Cristalino Jungle Lodge is the perfect place to experience the wonders of the Amazon first-hand. It’s located within a huge forest reserve and relies on renewable building materials, natural ventilation systems, permaculture and solar panels to work in harmony with the natural environment.

In recent years, the Casco Viejo (historic centre) of Panama City has been completely revitalised with urban regeneration projects and new hotel openings. In 2024 we suggest checking out the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, a sophisticated hotel set in the building that once housed the iconic Union Club. You can also experience the Panama Canal from a VIP area at the Miraflores Locks, allowing you to skip the crowds and see the canal up close.

Panama has plenty to offer outside of its capital city as well. We love the new Nayara Bocas del Toro, a true tropical paradise featuring private overwater villas in the Caribbean Sea. You can go glamping in the San Blas Islands, meet the Emberá people in the Darién province or spend a week sailing between Panama and Costa Rica on a brand new luxury yacht – including a few nights on your own private island.

In fact, it’ll be easier than ever to combine a trip to Panama with Costa Rica in 2024 – thanks not only to the aforementioned yacht, but also to increasingly frequent flights between these neighbouring countries. Visiting both in the same trip allows you to experience different cultures and explore contrasting landscapes, from lush green jungles to idyllic secluded beaches.

Chile ’s sheer variety of landscapes astound. The desolate Atacama Desert , lush green undulating wine valleys , snow-capped volcanoes of the Lake District and windswept plains of Torres del Paine keep us coming back year after year. In 2024 we want to journey a little further, to places like Chiloé , Aisén or Navarino Island – where the rewards of longer trips mean exploring coastlines, islands, and national parks away from the crowds, and the chance to delve into the Indigenous culture of the Mapuche.

Our travel designer Charles has been on the ground exploring and we’ve been hearing wonderful things about Explora Patagonia National Park , an intimate and peaceful lodge. From here you can navigate some of the worlds most crystalline waters on the Cochrane River, mountain bike across the Patagonian steppe or attempt a high mountain ascent of Tamango or Oportus,.

Galápagos Islands

This is the year to make that once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galápagos Islands . We recommend booking a suite on a luxury vessel like the Endemic or the Elite . Both of these ships have been working hard on minimising their environmental impact by reducing fuel consumption, using biodegradable products and implementing purified water dispensers to reduce single-use plastics.

If you prefer to stay on land, Galápagos Safari Camp and Pikaia Lodge are also terrific options. Galápagos Safari Camp is renowned for its reforestation efforts, while Pikaia Lodge was the first carbon-neutral hotel to open in the Galápagos. Staying on land affords a little more flexibility and a more bespoke approach to your daily activities, which we find works brilliantly for families.

The islands are a year-round destination, so they can easily slot into your 2024 schedule no matter when you’re planning on travelling. That said, our wildlife expert Lily points out that if you want to see certain animals, the best time to visit the Galápagos varies accordingly.

We know Antarctica isn’t technically part of Latin America, but combining it with Chile or Argentina creates an incredible three- or four-week trip. It goes without saying that this is a destination unlike any other. If you want to embark on a truly remote and thrilling adventure, challenging yourself in extreme conditions, we can’t recommend the White Continent enough in 2024.

You can reach Antarctica by sailing the Drake Passage from Ushuaia , or do a fly-in cruise from Chile to save time. When it comes to ships, we recommend Sylvia Earle , which has the world’s lowest-polluting marine engines, or the Magellan Explorer , which re-uses heat from the engine to warm up the ship – among many other environmentally conscious initiatives. Both of these ships are adventure-oriented, with spacious suites, lovely lounge areas and observation decks and state-of-the-art educational facilities.

Over the past few years, Bolivia has been working hard to establish itself as a tourism destination on par with its popular neighbours. In 2024 you can reap the rewards of those efforts by experiencing lesser-known destinations and rugged adventures that highlight not only the country’s natural beauty, but also its distinctive cultural identity.

Bolivia is best known for the spectacular Salar de Uyuni , which can form either end of an adventurous journey between Bolivia and Chile (with stops at luxurious lodges along the way). Visit the salt flats during the rainy season from November to March to see the famous ‘mirror effect’ – and avoid the crowds that descend during the dry season. 

Although Uyuni is not to be missed, there’s much more to discover in Bolivia. The lofty city of La Paz is nothing short of magical – but smaller cities like Sucre , Cochabamba and Potosi are also packed with ancient history and cultural landmarks. Then there are the stunning caves and canyons of Torotoro National Park; the mystical Islands of the Moon and Sun in Lake Titicaca ; and the ancient temples and pyramids of sites like Tiwanaku.

Bolivia borders both Peru and Chile, making it easy to combine with these classic destinations. That said, 2024 could be the perfect year to dedicate more time to exploring this country in depth, rather than just hitting the highlights. This will give you plenty of time to get to know Bolivia’s culture – not to mention its cuisine, from hearty soups to salteñas (crispy baked empanadas).

There are so many reasons to go to Colombia , from the lively cities of Bogotá and Medellín to the coastal paradises of Cartagena and Tayrona . In 2024, we’ll be recommending destinations that have seen the most positive change in the past few years, now with some of Latin America’s most exclusive accommodations and enriching experiences for travellers. For instance, the highland town of Barichara (now easily reachable via a new airport), the tropical grasslands of Los Llanos and the seaside village of Bahía Solano.

While Colombia ’s larger cities offer all the usual urban attractions such as world-class restaurants and museums, these places provide the kind of peaceful escape that only small towns can offer. They also have a growing selection of boutique hotels like Casa Barichara , where you’ll feel right at home.

According to our travel designer Jen, Colombia is one of the best places in Latin America for an off-the-beaten-track honeymoon. You can escape to secluded beach villas, hilltop retreats and luxurious hotels in Bogotá or Cartagena for candle-lit dinners and rooftop sundowners. When deciding which countries in Latin America to visit, safety ranking is an important factor. In this article, we’ll take a look at the safest countries in Latin America, where they’re ranked, and a little bit about what to do in each country.

The safest countries in Latin America are Costa Rica and Uruguay.  This is according to the Global Peace Index. It compares three factors, which are explained in this post.  Other safe countries include Chile, Argentina, and Panama.

Latin America is the group of countries in North and South America where Romance languages (Latin-derived languages), are considered the main languages. The languages we’re talking about are Spanish , Portuguese, and French.

Ranking System for the Safest Latin American Countries

How are these countries ranked? The lower the number, the safer the country.

Here’s a quick breakdown. The Global Peace Index score is based on 23 different points, divided into 3 main factors:

• Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict:   Such things as the number and duration of conflicts, how many deaths, the intensity of the conflict, and how the country fares with its neighbors impact the score.
• Societal Safety and Security:   In this section, things like political instability, refugees, terrorism, violent crimes, murders, jailed populations, and internal security officers and police officers play a role in affecting the score.
• Militarisation:   Military expenses, armed services personnel, importing and exporting of conventional weapons, nuclear and heavy weapons capabilities, how much is contributed to UN peacekeeping missions, and how easily accessible small arms and light weapons are all points that impact the peace score.

Here is the list of the safest countries in Latin America. This includes Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

1. Costa Rica

• Safety Score: 1.732
• Worldwide Rank: 38
• Population: 5.19 million (2022)
• Capital City: San José
• Tourists Per Year: 3.37 million (2019)
• Location: Central America

Costa Rica is the safest country in Latin America, coming at number 38 worldwide. It’s known as a wonderful vacation spot, and my wife and I have visited there several times.

While in Costa Riva, you can enjoy such things as ziplining at the Monteverde Cloud Reserve, discovering interesting wildlife (my wife loves the sloths in particular), or relaxing on pristine beaches like Tamarindo or Jaco.

Costa Rica is on a Level 2 travel advisory , mainly due to crime.

• Capital City: Montevideo
• Tourists Per Year: 3,000,000 (2019)
• Location: South America

Uruguay is the second country on this list and is the safest country in South America.

Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, is considered one of the safest capital cities in Latin America. You can enjoy the nearly 14-mile (22.2 kilometers) promenade known as the Rambla of Montevideo.

You can also visit the Plaza Independencia, Salvo Palace, and Solis Theater in the city, just to name a few tourist spots to enjoy.

According to travel.state.gov, Uruguay is at a level 2 advisory , or to exercise increased caution due to crime.

Chile comes in as the third safest country in Latin America. One of the most popular tourist destinations here is the Torres Del Paine National Park where you can enjoy hiking or go horseback riding.

You can also go enjoy the Marble Caves or head to Cape Horn, the most southern point in South America.

Some caution is needed when traveling in Chile ( Level 2 caution ; travel.state.gov) because of civil unrest.

Panama comes in at number 4 for the safest countries in Latin America, and another country I’ve been to personally (though very briefly). This Central American country borders South America and is famous for the Panama Canal.

You can also visit such destinations as Monkey Island or walk the Amador Causeway (Calzada de Amador).

Panama is currently under a Level 2 advisory . There are some warnings due to crime, with the Mosquito Gulf and the Darién Region under a “Do not travel to” advisory.

5. Argentina

• Worldwide Rank: 69
• Population: 47.43 million (2022)
• Capital City : Buenos Aires
• Tourists Per Year: 7,400,000 (2019)

Argentina comes in at number 5 of safest countries and has the biggest population on the list. This South American city boasts a variety of tourist activities.

You can visit the highest mountain in South America, Aconcagua; the largest waterfall system in the world, Iguazú Falls; and even take a cruise to Antarctica from Ushuaia.

Travel.state.gov currently has Argentina at Level 1 advisory , or to exercise normal precautions when traveling there.

6. Paraguay

• Worldwide Rank: 77
• Population: 7.31 million (2022)
• Capital City: Asunción
• Tourists Per Year: 4,370,000 (2019)

Number 6 on the list of safest countries in Latin America is Paraguay. You can enjoy the sights of Manzana de la Rivera and Plaza Uruguaya in the capital city of Asunción; visit Encarnación, sometimes known as “The Pearl of the South”; or relax in the popular vacation spot of San Bernardino.

Like Argentina, travel.state.gov has Paraguay at a Level 1 travel advisory , meaning you should exercise normal precautions.

• Capital City: Santo Domingo
• Tourists Per Year: 7.55 million (2019)

The Dominican Republic is number 9 of safest Latin American countries. Very popular for travelers looking to get away from winter, especially those looking for a resort vacation.

You can also visit such areas as 3 Eyes National Park, go swimming at Soana Island, or check out Lago Enriquillo.

The Dominican Republic is under a Level 2 advisory due to crime. Resort areas tend to be better policed than other regions.

Cuba is the 10th safest Latin American country. This Caribbean country has many things to offer tourists.

The 11th safest country in Latin America is Peru and the third country on this list I’ve visited personally.

Besides the famous and popular Machu Picchu, you can also visit another set of ruins of a walled settlement called Kuélap, or go hiking on the Salkantay Trek or the Colca Canyon.

Due to increased crime in certain areas, Peru is currently at a Level 3 advisory (reconsider travel) . There are warnings to avoid traveling to certain areas altogether.

12. Guatemala

• Safety Score: 2.139
• Worldwide Rank: 106
• Population: 18.61 million
• Capital City: Guatemala City
• Tourists Per Year: 2.56 million (2019)

Number 12 of the safest Latin American countries is Guatemala. Travelers can visit different sites such as the former capital Antigua, a UNESCO Heritage site; check out the Chichicastenango Market or other Mayan markets; or head over to Rio Dulce if sailing is your thing.

Guatemala is under a Level 3 advisory, Reconsider Travel, because of crime. Several areas are under a “Do not travel to” warning.

The Safest Countries in Latin America 2024 – and Least Safe!

When planning travels to unfamiliar destinations, it’s really important that you take into consideration the political, economic and social risks of visiting that certain area of the world. Central and South America have a reputation for violence and unrest, so my advice is that you get a-learnin’ about the countries you’re considering long before you book those flights.

To simplify this, here’s a list of the top 10 safest countries in Latin America for 2024 (and also the least safe countries, at the bottom of this page!). You’ll see that there are proportionately more of the top safest countries in South America than Central, but the Central nations that do well do very, very well!

Please note that I’m sticking to mainland LatAm for this list, so Caribbean islands haven’t been included as they’re not often on the travel route that readers come to my blog for 🙂 Some of them also have different ease of travel implications depending on where in the world the tourist is from.

What’s my data source for the safest Latin American countries?

This is really important to know, and comes with lots of challenges to get to an accurate list of the safest countries in Latin America. For this list, I’m going to be using the results of the Global Peace Index (June, 2023), which weights 23 data points including political instability, militarisation, terrorism, incarceration effects, homicides, sexual assaults and ecological threats.

Is this the best way to statistically say whether a country is safe or not? Honestly, no . It’s actually pretty flawed, and my Economics professors would probably flog me for it. However, with the limited global data that’s out there, this is one of the most accurate indices for estimating which are the safest countries in Latin America at this time.

In an ideal world, I would love to include data from the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report that looks into safety specifically from a tourist’s point of view, but this hasn’t been refreshed since 2019, and I’m even less comfortable using country data in such a fast-changing part of the world that has since gone through a pandemic.

What’s important to consider about safety in Latin America?

So why not just judge which are the safest countries in Latin America using homicide rates, I hear you ask? Well, from a traveller’s point of view, this is not a particularly relevant metric. That’s because the vast majority of homicides in Latin America are gang/cartel-related or domestic.

The chances of a randomer walking up and shooting you are fairly low – though will hugely increase if you decide to go against all advice and visit extremely poor or known dangerous areas and proceed to act obnoxiously and/or flash your cash ( I’m not victim-blaming, I’m stupid-tourist-blaming ).

More likely to affect tourists and therefore one of the key indicators in considering the safest countries in Latin America for travellers is the level of civil unrest.

Though in 2020 some contenders saw their protestors agreeing to reduce or put a halt to protests, 2021’s perceived political mishandling and economic strain put on the many communities living hand-to-mouth during to the pandemic has meant some of this unrest has come back with new fire in its belly.

A number of countries have switched hands – whether by fully democratic means or not – in the last few years, and some have even switched political ideologies. This will all ultimately influence how people live day-to-day, how content they feel and how issues are dealt with, and therefore whether the environment is safe and secure.

I’m not gonna say the time everyone got kicked off of our bus a few kilometres away from the nearest city in Bolivia due to road blockades & political protests was the worst thing to ever have happened in the world, but it wasn’t particularly fun:

Of course, COVID-19 will have had an impact while this country safety data was put together. The problem with trying to gauge medical safety in developing countries during a global pandemic is that testing is not universally affordable – by the government nor the general population – and these countries’ lack of power and money on the world stage means they are often low in the pecking order to receive solutions once they are discovered.

The pandemic data collection & reporting in Latin America is not always well-funded/far-reaching and often needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Anyway, let’s get into the list of the safest countries in Latin America to travel to in terms of the latest Global Peace Index in 2024…

And for reference, Canada scored a ranking of 11th out of 163 in the latest GPI report, the UK came 37th, and the USA dropped rankings yet again to 131st . Yep.

Safest countries in Latin America in 2024:

Joint 8th. guatemala.

GPI Ranking: 103

A relatively new entrant into the top 10 safest countries in Latin America since I started these guides a few years ago! Great to see Guatemala making an appearance here.

It’s seen an improvement in the homicide rate since 2021, but the country is sadly still known for femicide (usually within domestic relationships).

From a visitors’ point of view, caution and a keen eye are needed in assessing situations, but outside of the larger cities you won’t feel too on-edge.

Joint 8th. Peru

I’m glad Peru didn’t rank too poorly on the list of safest countries in Latin America because it’s definitely a must-visit for tourists interested in the rich history of this region, but its place has slipped significantly from 7th in Latin America and 86th globally in 2021.

Luckily, you can explore all the wonders of Machu Picchu , Cusco and Paracas without looking over your shoulder the whole time.

Some parts of the cities of course get dodgy, so wise up on the safer areas before you travel to Peru (or anywhere else, for that matter).

GPI Ranking: 97

Slipping a fair bit from it’s global safety ranking of 73 last year, Ecuador’s place of 7th in the safest countries in Latin America is heavily influenced by the protests suffered over the last couple of years, standing a stand against everything from oil prices to wages and the handling of the pandemic by the government.

Gang conflict is known to happen north in the Esmeraldas region, so tourists are generally told to avoid it, and I was specifically warned about muggings in Quito , especially in the highly touristic areas such as the Old Town where you’re a sitting duck.

However, in much of the country popular with visitors, such as Otavalo , Baños and Cuenca , things do feel pretty safe.

JAN 2024 UPDATE: Since the release date of the latest GPI report, Ecuador saw the return of a cartel leader, Fito, onto the streets after he escaped from prison. This has triggered an extreme downwards slide into effective terrorism by the gangs, so please avoid major cities right now.

GPI Ranking: 78

To tell the truth, this one sort of surprised me at first, as while petty crime is quite common due to the relative poverty in Bolivia, violent crime isn’t necessarily an everyday threat as long as you don’t get involved in the wrong crowd/cartel.

Where Bolivia does not score well is in the militarisation indicator, especially in the wake of the ousting of their hero-turned-cray-cray-fraudster, Evo Morales, back in 2019 and the political turmoil that has thrown them into.

But aside from having to plan travel around road blockages and the like, this shouldn’t affect visitors too significantly.

Joint 5th. Paraguay

GPI Ranking: 68

I feel like Paraguay is one of those countries that just keeps its head down and gets on with things. One thing I noticed when I visited Paraguay was that the wealth gap is HUGE, so people are either São Paulo elite wealthy or La Paz hilltops poor.

Paraguay doesn’t score too well on the economic cost of violence, which explores indicators such as armed conflict and internal displacement.

I definitely felt a little on-edge in some parts of Asunción as there are several shanty towns right in the centre, but it didn’t help that we arrived during a protest against political corruption. However, in the richer parts of the city, people party like it’s an NYC rooftop, pulling up in their Range Rovers with not a care in the world. Pick your areas wisely!

Joint 5th. Panama

Panama is just… I don’t know how to describe Panama without it sounding like a negative thing, but… neutral? Chill? Mild?

Anyway, a key reason that Panama continues to sit near the middle of the top 10 safest countries in Latin America is that it suffered unrest in the last few years over reforms that the government tried to push through that were to have a significant effect on marginalised groups.

These protests largely occur in Panama City, so are unlikely to affect travel across the rest of the country.

In the 2019 GPI , Chile scored the highest ranking of all the safest countries in Latin America, ranking 27 th worldwide. However, ongoing civil unrest in reaction to a very unpopular government means that it has slipped from its pedestal in recent years.

Away from the big cities, Chile’s most beautiful areas are still very much peaceful, so just keep up-to-date with protests and plan your trip to the ex-safest country in South America accordingly.

3. Argentina

GPI Ranking: 54

Sneaking above 2 places up in this list of the safest countries in Latin America for 2024, Argentina is more known for its political and economic instability, so as a tourist you don’t need to be too preoccupied with the risk of violent crime.

Most crime towards foreigners is petty – whilst there, I was victim to credit card copying in a restaurant in Buenos Aires , and then accused of being the thief in Rosario when someone had cash stolen off their bed in a hostel ( spoiler alert: I wasn’t ).

Again, protests can happen, and declaring bankruptcy every 5 years or so is a trick the Argentinian government is fond of which can make money hard to value and get hold of. COVID-19 may have sped up this pattern, so keep an eye on the economic situation before you travel.

Top of the safest countries in South America, Uruguay is famed for its political stability and relative lack of violent crime.

The GDP per capita is much higher than some of its neighbours, so there’s less of a need for people to survive via desperate means. Education levels are high, and the climate is mild.

Funnily enough, since arriving in Uruguay was the first time I ever stepped foot on South American soil, I remember being caught up in the continent’s bad reputation and feeling entirely on-edge for the first 2 weeks or so, even though it’s technically safer than my home country. Lols.

1. Costa Rica

GPI Ranking: 39

Long a safe haven for tourists wanting to dip their toes into Latin American travel without being too exposed to many of the dangers associated with this region, Costa Rica remains on top of the safest countries in Latin America to travel, and has actually climbed one place in the rankings since last year.

It has managed to gain this title despite an increase in violent demonstrations year-on-year and an influx of refugees from its neighbour, Nicaragua .

The biggest crime against tourists in Costa Rica is the price of tours + expectation for fat tips at the end. Don’t @ me, bruh.

The one I’m most disappointed to see so low on the ranking of safest countries in Latin America is Colombia , as it obviously has a special place in my heart. However, it reveals some of the flaws in using this data, as it can’t account for the fact that the guerrilla violence and cartel activity are heavily concentrated to certain regions that tourists would/should never go.

Much of the petty crime in Colombia (and to be honest, many of the other countries in Latin America) can be avoided by being aware of your surroundings and not drawing attention to yourself as a tourist. Check out safety tips for Colombia here .

Venezuela, however, is down at the bottom of the list of safest countries in Latin America in 2024 for a very solid reason; unfortunately it’ll be a few years at the very least before it’ll be advisable to travel there due to immense political unrest and the displacement of millions of people.

Very informative. I lived in Mexico back in the 90’s . It depends where you live. Queretaro was super safe. Never felt threatened. D.F. is a little different but only felt really on edge once. South America is popular among all types of wanderers, including budget travelers. Not only does it offer various affordable (and even free) activities, the cost of accommodation, dining, and transportation here is generally low.

For that reason, South America promises a thrilling travel experience without breaking the bank.

We’ve ranked the cheapest countries to visit in South America based on the average amount you can expect to spend in each. These costings include accommodation, public transport, and meals. 

Keep in mind that the cost of food can vary greatly depending on the type of restaurant, location, and dining habits. The same applies to accommodation; that’s why we provide both hostel and mid-range hotel rates.

So here’s our list of the cheapest countries to visit in South America.

Note:  Some countries in South America are going through political unrest, which influences their economy, and means prices can go up (or down) significantly. As a result, this list may change from time to time as we try our best to stay up-to-date with the current situations.

Exchange rates are also accurate as of late 2023, so double-check these against  the latest rates  for the most accurate conversions and bear in mind that cash is king in many countries in South America, so while a credit card can be handy in major cities, you’ll want to either use an ATM (and check it doesn’t charge you extra for withdrawing money) or a currency exchange offering a decent rate when you arrive.

1. Paraguay ( from $15 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $8 USD
• Budget restaurant: $6 USD

• Cost per day: $15

The cheapest country in South America is Paraguay, a non-traditional tourist destination, which makes this country an attraction of its own.

With 110,000 PYG ($15USD) a day, you stay at a hostel (58,000 PYG or $8 USD per night) and a three-course meal (around 44,000 PYG or $6 USD per meal).

Whether it’s to see the colonial architecture of the well-preserved Jesuit missions , explore the vast, unspoiled wilderness of Chaco, or taste the tantalizing flavors of its one-of-a-kind cuisine, you get to experience all that with fewer crowds.

It’s relatively safe to explore cities in Paraguay on your own, but the lack of other tourists can make it a very strange experience! However, we recommend joining a tour or hiring a local guide if you plan on navigating off the beaten path, particularly if you don’t speak much Spanish.

2. Ecuador (from $21 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $5 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $14 USD 9 hrs
• Budget restaurant: $2 USD
• Cost per day: $7 + $14 = $21 USD

The second cheapest country to visit in South America is, Ecuador, which packs a punch with its diverse attractions: from the unparalleled wildlife of the Galápagos Islands to the fascinating and rich culture.

Budget-savvy travelers will love that a daily budget, excluding the cost of a Galápagos tour or cruise, of just $21 USD can go a long way in this friendly country.

When it comes to food, basic meals cost around $2 USD, but if you want more than rice and potatoes, expect to pay around $6.5 USD per dish.

As one of the cheapest places to visit in South America , it’s not difficult to find hostels in Ecuador, especially in popular tourist destinations like Quito and Cuenca. A hostel bed costs from $5 to $20, but private rooms (even at hostels) may cost anywhere from $20 to $50.

Interestingly enough, Ecuador uses the US dollar, so the added bonus of visiting this country is that you don’t need to worry about finding a good exchange rate!

3. Peru (from $23.5 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $7 USD
• Budget restaurant: $2.5 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $14 USD 18 hrs
• Cost per day: $9.5 + $14 for buses = $23.5 USD

The third cheapest country to visit in South America is Peru, where an average day traveling here costs around S/89 or $23.5 USD. A meal at a local restaurant can cost anywhere from S/ 20 to 30 (about $5 to $8 USD), while street food and snacks are half the price – relatively cheap for such a thriving culinary scene that pretty much guarantees delicious food, even at street food stalls.

When it comes to accommodation, you can expect low prices of around S/ 27 or $7 USD per night at a hostel (but triple for a mid-range hotel).

Peru’s archaeological sites and breathtaking nature make it one of the most beautiful countries in South America, too. Among them is its focal point, Machu Picchu, the ever-popular Inca Trail , and the magical Sacred Valley , all of which never cease to attract visitors.

Before the 2023 protest, Peru was one of the safest countries in South America for independent solo travelers. Unfortunately, the latest incidents have had significant impacts on its tourism; some sites are temporarily closed, and others require local guides.

4. Bolivia (from $26.5 USD per day)

• Budget restaurant: $4.5 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $17 USD 9 hrs
• Cost per day: $9.5 + $17 for buses = $26.5 USD

Coming in just behind Peru is Bolivia, which ranks as the fourth cheapest country to visit in South America.

To explore Bolivia conveniently, you’ll need around 183 BOB ($26.5 USD) per day. Dining at local restaurants costs anywhere from 30 to 50 BOB ($4.5 to $7.25 USD), while higher-end restaurants in cities like La Paz or Santa Cruz can be more expensive, with prices ranging from around 100 BOB ($14.5 USD).

The gap also applies to accommodation. While hostel rates are around 34.5 BOB ($5 USD) only, mid-range hotels can charge 221 BOB ($32 USD) or more.

Transportation can also be very affordable, with bus rides the most economical means of getting around the country – although, for safety reasons, taking a flight can often be better.

Being the home to the world’s largest salt flats, El Salar de Uyuni , makes Bolivia one of the best South American countries to visit. The country’s indigenous communities and ancient civilizations have left behind a fascinating history and cultural traditions that are still present today.

Bolivia is relatively safe to visit independently, although we recommend traveling with friends, especially if it’s your first time in South America.

5. Colombia (from $34 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $4 USD
• Budget restaurant: $1.5-$3 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $27 USD 9 hrs
• Cost per day: $7 + $27 for buses = $34 USD

Surprisingly, Colombia comes in middle of the pack when it comes to the cheapest countries in South America, Here, on average, you can expect to spend around 144,000 COP ($34 USD) per day if you’re staying at hostels (which cost around 17,000 COP or $4 USD per night).

Perhaps due to the cheap cost of travel here, but probably also because it’s a truly incredible destination (it’s among founder Steph’s favorite countries in South America), visitor numbers to  Colombia  have rapidly increased in the last decade, making it one of the most popular destinations to visit in South America.

So captivated by the country’s charm – whether it’s the mega biodiversity, friendly local people, low living cost, or all of the above – some have also been unable to resist making Colombia their permanent home.

Colombia is a great place to visit if you’re on a tight budget thanks to the affordable price of traveling here.

Meanwhile, one night at a mid-range hotel for a double room costs almost as much as the average daily budget, so you can expect to pay around $50 USD per day if you’re traveling as a couple.

A meal at a local, mid-range restaurant is around 17,000 to 25,000 COP (about $4 to $6 USD). Street food and snacks can cost as little as 7,000 to 14,000 COP ($1.5 to $3 USD).

A big factor that sets Colombia as the most affordable country in South America is how easy it is to explore the country on a budget.

Most of what we consider to be the top places to visit in Colombia don’t require you to join a tour, so you’re free to set your own budget and time and can head out to Colombia’s beautiful beaches, glorious national parks , and major cities such as Medellin and Cartagena at your own leisure.

6. Argentina ($43 USD per day)

• Budget restaurant: $6.5 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $84 USD 17hrs
• Cost per day: $11.5 + 84 = $95.5

Argentina is a land of breathtaking beauty and eclectic wonders, where soaring mountains and glittering cities share the stage with wildlife colonies, world-class vineyards, and the monumental Iguazu Falls.

Argentina economy update

The Argentine economy is a huge mess at the moment, with inflation expected to hit 200% this year. Using Argentine pesos can therefore be a nightmare – and mean you lose a lot of money. The blue dollar (an unofficial exchange rate that gives you a better conversion than the official rate) is around, but if you want to avoid carrying lots of cash, you can now pay using your credit card and get an exchange rate similar to the blue dollar rate. You must choose to pay in Argentine pesos (not USD!) to secure this rate.

Both Mastercard and Visa give you what is called the MEP rate, which is almost as good as the blue dollar rate. Mastercard will charge you the official rate but refund you the money a few days later; Visa will charge you the MEP rate from the beginning.

If you do want to have some Argentine pesos for paying in cash (which I highly recommend as you will need them for some restaurants and attractions), it’s best to use Western Union, whereby you send cash to yourself using the Western Union app and then withdraw it in Argentine pesos from one of their branches in Argentina. Bear in mind, those in El Calafate and Ushuaia can run dry of notes, so it can be easiest to do this in Buenos Aires.

Additionally, you can bring USD (unmarked and untorn hundred dollar bills), which you can exchange at “cuevas” (unofficial exchange houses). These will be able to give you the blue dollar rate and any hotel owner will be able to tell you where your nearest one is. Souvenir shops in most parts of the country will be able to give you pesos in exchange for dollar bills – although they might not give you the best rate.

Avoid cash machines. Currently, the maximum withdrawal is the equivalent of $15 USD in Argentine pesos and it will cost you $10 USD in fees.

Its capital city, Buenos Aires, attracts millions of foodies and football fanatics alike, so it should come as no surprise that it’s the most popular country in South America to visit (according to Wikipedia’s world tourism ranking ).

8,200 ARS ($43 USD) should be your daily budget in Argentina. Basic meals cost around 1,200 ARS ($6.5 USD) on average, but if you fancy a dish at one of the local steak houses (asados) in Buenos Aires or beyond, expect to pay at least 1,700 ARS ($9 USD).

The home to 2023 World Cup winners is popular among backpackers and solo travelers. As a result, hostels are affordable (around 950 ARS or $5 USD per night), making them only the second cheapest after Colombia.

7. Brazil ($48 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $12 USD
• Budget restaurant: $7 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $81USD 1d 7hrs
• Cost per day: $19 + $81 = $100

60% of the Amazon Rainforest lies in Brazilian territory, offering plenty of adventure tourism opportunities for those looking to head deep into the jungle.

On the other side of the country, Brazil’s long coastline means unlimited sun, surf, and sand, particularly in the vast seaside city of Rio de Janeiro, home to a thriving music, dance, and food scene – and, lest we forget, riotous carnaval celebrations!

A bowl of feijoada at a local restaurant usually costs around 37 BRL ($7 USD), while accommodation rates range from 63 BRL ($12 USD) for a hostel to 230 BRL ($44 USD) for a mid-range hotel. In total, a day in Brazil should cost around 251 BRL ($48 USD).

As long as you stay safe – such as by avoiding city beaches after dark and keeping possessions close – it’s doable to explore Brazil’s touristy areas alone. But if you wish to dig deeper into its villages and rainforest, it’s best to join a tour or be accompanied by a local guide.

8. Chile ($74 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $20 USD
• Budget restaurant: $20 USD
• Overnight bus journey: $20 USD 11hrs
• Cost per day: $40 + $20 = $60USD

We’ve come to the more expensive side of the cheapest countries to visit in Latin America: Chile . Notice that there’s almost a $20 USD jump in daily expenses compared to Brazil at #7.

It’s mainly due to the expensive rate for accommodation, especially in remote areas like Chiloé Island, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) , Patagonia , and the Atacama Desert .

On average, a bed in a hostel costs around 16,000 CLP ($20 USD), while a mid-range hotel room is a lot more, ranging from 40,000 to 60,000 CLP ($50 to $75 USD). That said, Chile is packed full of brilliant hotels and guesthouses , so it’s worth being open to splurging a little where you can.

The Chilean culinary scene is dominated by restaurants in the big cities, so you need to budget around 16,000 CLP ($20 USD) or more for one meal. In contrast, in small towns like Dalcahue on Chiloé Island, you’ll find local markets offer mouth-watering delicacies at more wallet-friendly prices.

Despite the higher cost, the plethora of activities, sights, and experiences more than makes up for it; from the serene, breathtaking landscapes of Tierra del Fuego to the lively, picturesque coastal city of Valparaíso .

And let’s not forget, it’s the second safest South American country to visit, meaning you’ll face fewer safety concerns than elsewhere and be able to concentrate on the beautiful scenery and incredible natural landscapes, instead.

9. Uruguay ($80 USD per day)

• Budget hostal: $28 USD
• Budget restaurant: $10 USD
• Cost per day: $38

Nestled in Uruguay are several charming colonial towns that offer visitors a window into the country’s rich history and cultural heritage. In addition to these historical gems, Uruguay boasts stunning beaches.

To top it off, Uruguay was declared the safest South American country to visit by the 2022 Global Peace Index , making independent travel a worry-free option.

Living costs in Uruguay are among the most expensive in South America, with hostels setting their nightly rate at around 1,100 UYU ($28 USD), and mid-range hotels costing at least double.

Typical meals like empanadas and chivitos cost around 400 to 500 UYU ($10 to $15 USD) or even less if you choose street food stalls. Overall, expect to spend around 3,130 UYU ($80 USD) a day in Uruguay.

10. Venezuela ($100 USD per day)

• Budget hotel: $50 USD
• Cost per day: $60

A must-see when visiting Venezuela is the Angel Falls, one of South America’s most magnificent waterfalls . Apart from that, its capital city Caracas offers visitors museums, art galleries, historic sites, and street food stalls selling local fare. It’s unfortunate that this country has faced numerous struggles over the past few views.

The economic collapse in Venezuela has resulted in severe hyperinflation and a shortage of basic goods, causing prices to skyrocket. This significantly influences your South America vacation budget if you want to include Venezuela – however, we highly advise against visiting the country right now, due to safety concerns.

Currently, a regular meal at a local restaurant can cost $10 to $13 USD, which is usually what a dish at a mid-range restaurant would cost in most South American countries, while a mid-range hotel room charge from $50 to $80 USD. In total, you’ll need $100 USD per day in Venezuela.

11. Suriname ($110 per day; including tour/guide fees)

• Budget restaurant: $9 USD
• Cost per day: $37

From Paramaribo’s Dutch colonial architecture to pristine rainforests, waterfalls, and rivers, Suriname has something for every kind of traveler. But since it’s one of the most challenging places to visit in South America, even an avid traveler should consider joining a tour or hiring a local guide.

Set aside a 3,500 SRD (around $110 USD) daily budget to have a hassle-free experience in Suriname. A basic meal costs around 290 SRD ($9 USD), while for budget-friendly accommodation options, hostels and basic hotel rooms will cost between 900 and 1,130 SRD ($28 to $35 USD) per night.

This doesn’t include entrance tickets to famous places in South America, such as Machu Picchu , Torres del Paine National Park , or the Galapagos Islands.

It’s important to remember that prices can vary greatly between countries and even between different regions within a country. For example, countries like Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru tend to be more budget-friendly than Argentina and Brazil.

Latin America is wide-ranging with some truly amazing destinations to visit, yet many are still overlooked.

Between Mexico and South America lies Central America, home to just 7 nations.

Even then some countries don't receive the recognition they should.

Yet one of them has become very popular with Americans who want to explore the vast diversity of culture and nature.

While neighboring Costa Rica has become one of the best beach destinations in the world, Panama is more than sun and sand.

Panama is expecting just under 3 million tourists with Americans leading the way.

Here are 5 reasons why Americans love visiting this diverse Latin American country:

The Cultural Haven Of Panama City

Not every trip to Latin America has be high-end resorts along incredible beaches.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but neither is exploring historic cultural cities.

Panama City is a mix of old and new and that's instantly noticeable with your eyes to the skies.

At first glance, you can't help but notice the impressive skyline, but don't let the pizzazz throw you off as this city is jam-packed with history and cultural experiences.

Besides Mexico City, this is one of the few major cities easily accessible in Latin America that's worth a visit.

Many avoid Guatemala City and San Jose and if we're being honest, travelers aren't visiting Central America's fastest-growing country to spend the majority of their time in San Salvador.

That leaves Panama City as one of the best options for a city break which just so happens to be surrounded by stunning nature offering some of the best views in the country.

But back in the concrete jungle is an incredible nightlife scene inviting to all travelers and the historic district of Casco Viejo dating back to the 1600s tucked away from the high-rises.

Enjoy a cigar, shop for a classic Panama Hat , and indulge in traditional food dating back centuries. Some might say this side of the city is “the New Orleans of Panama”.

Safe To Visit

Sometimes bigger cities get a bad rap with the fear of taking a wrong turn into a dark underbelly of crime-ridden streets.

Some of Central America's bigger cities already touched on don't have the best reputation and this extends west into Mexico and east into South America from Colombia to Brazil.

Panama City, and the whole country really, is widely considered a safe destination. Tourists can wander Panama's streets without the fear of becoming victims of a crime like many other similar cities.

The U.S. State Department advises travelers to avoid the”Mosquito Gulf”, which sounds like a nightmare anyway, as well as the Darien Region.

Up, Up And Away

Panama isn't far away in terms of air travel and there are many flight options to get here, including Panama's own Copa Airlines.

Copa is your best bet for a nonstop flight, but for those who remain loyal to U.S.-based carriers then American, Delta, and United offer a select few from Atlanta, Miami, and Houston.

You will likely touch down at the Tocumen International Airport just outside Panama City, the busiest airport in Central America.

Surprisingly Affordable

When you arrive in Panama City, the modern cityscape can throw you for a loop thinking you're about to splurge.

That doesn't have to be the case, however. Panama is surprisingly affordable and definitely cheaper than neighboring Costa Rica, while rivals their immense beautiful nature as Panama City borders a gorgeous tropical rainforest.

Costa Rica is certainly more trendy to explore jungles, waterfalls, and even beaches, but travelers can save money by going just one more country over for a very similar experience in nature and lots more to do in a vibrant cultural city.

It's not unreasonable to get by on a $500 budget for a weeklong stay.

An Underrated Beach Vacation

Latin America is also jam-packed with beaches with Mexico the clear favorite destination. Panama can't argue against that, but Panama is full of surprises including affordable all-inclusive resorts .

Within a 2-hour drive away from Panama City is the beautiful Coclé province lined with beach resorts, including brands we love like Riu.

Also not discussed as much are Panama's islands – there are 1,000 of them! Perfect for a blissful escape away from the action-packed city life, the islands of Taboga, Coiba, and Colón are a few of the most popular.

While the bucket-list-worthy San Blas islands are unlike any other as occupied by the indigenous Gunas.

Many are easy to reach and very affordable, Panama's beaches are yet another great reason Americans lead the pack in coming here for an awesome trip.
