Pond are a psychedelic rock band hailing from Perth, Australia. The core members are Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson and Joseph Ryan, who formed in 2008 to make whatever music they wanted to make with whoever they wanted to make it with.

This is a band for whom horizons are meaningless. It’s not even entirely accurate to call them a band, since the members of the band past the core trio are so numerous and fleeting that it’s more accurate to call them a collective. One fuelled by camaraderie, creative spirit and copious amounts of psychedelics.

Two of the core trio haven’t even full time members of the band for the length of time they’ve been together. Pond are arguably the sister group of Tame Impala, since Watson was practically a founding member of them, who still drums with them to this day. Allbrook was also a member of Kevin Parker’s band until 2013, when he quit in order to continue focusing on Pond.

However, Pond had already been together for two years when Tame Impala’s “Innerspeaker” album was released and the attention levelled on Kevin Parker’s band also found its way to Allbrook, Watson and Ryan’s band as well.

They’d used their time constructively, since in those two years they’d written, recorded and released three albums, January 2009’s “Psychedelic Mango”, June 2009’s “Corridors of Blissterday” and May 2010’s “Frond”. 2010 also saw the recording of their breakthrough album “Beard, Wives, Denim”, but the album wouldn’t see release until 2012.

With that album’s release the NME named them “The Hottest New Band In The World” and in terms of activity it’s hard to disagree. They’ve since released another album, 2013’s “Hobo Rocket” and become one of the most acclaimed live acts in the world.

Any rock fan should seek out this band for whom the sky’s the limit, they’re nearing the top of their game, and look set to be something very special indeed.

Live reviews

When most bands form they have a set idea of which genre direction they want to explore or even the sort of bands they want to emulate. When Australian band Pond joined forces in 2008, their only direction was that they wanted to play whatever music they could work into a collaborative project. Releasing their debut album in early 2009 entitled ‘Psychedelic Mango’ delved into psychedelic rock whilst incorporating elements of pop and full of feel good tracks. A band always up for a challenge, they wrote and recorded their second album ‘Corridors of Blissterday’ in five days and released it five months later, which they recorded live with an eight piece band. A year later came their third album ‘Frond’ which was even poppier than any of their other releases. Their breakthrough came when the side project of some of the members’ album ‘Innerspeaker’ went into the Australian charts at number four. This was great exposure for Pond as their fourth album ‘Beard, Wives, Denim’ received much critical acclaim and gave them the opportunity to tour America. In 2012, NME magazine named Pond as ‘The Hottest New Band in the World’ and went on to play SXSW festival and support Arctic Monkeys on their Australian tour. You really get a sense of what Pond are when they perform live. With their hippy shoe-gazing demeanour on stage they create a great electric ambiance with plenty of guitar distortion and inspired psychedelic melodies. It’s hard to not fall in love and be taken aback by Pond, with so much energy and lots of catchy tunes they are simply mesmerising. This band can do no wrong.

Psychedelic rock is a growing trend globally following on from the indie boom of the mid-noughties. Following in the footsteps of fellow Aussie indie outfit Tame Impala, Pond have their eyes set on global domination with their own mind bending sounds. Supported by UK publications including NME and Q Magazine, they are now a regular frequenter of festival lineups across the country and with every show their reputation grows further.

The quintet is already five albums into their career so they have no issues in creating a setlist of the very finest surreal alt-pop gems. The fans react well as lack of commerciality means there are no hits to lead up towards and instead they can showcase their own finest picks. The music is all incredibly high quality and the musicians onstage work together brilliantly to really jam out to the likes of 'Greens Pool' and 'Xanman'. There is a potential that this band could become absolutely huge as they properly break from beneath the radar so head down and catch them now.

I have now seen Pond twice, and these guys hold the spot for my top two favorite live shows of all time. The melodic guitar riffs coupled with the other-worldly, elevating synth sounds leave you hoping they'll play forever.

Energy radiates out of lead singer Nick Allbrook, who spent half of the show in the audience. Although he first appears meek and unassuming, he immediately spring into action upon the first song, and -man- can that guy move! Bassist Jay Watson, who also plays as a touring member of Tame Impala, delivers many a killer bassline, the kind that makes you turn to the person next to you just to make sure you haven't somehow left the venue. The members of Pond work hard the entire gig, but you would never know because of the constant, light-hearted exchange between the audience and the band. Their music seems effortless, floating almost.

If you ever have the opportunity to see these guys live, do not pass it up. You'll thank me later.

So yesterday I headed down to my spirit home. A double volume warehouse brimming with musical goods of almost every variable – records, CD’s, posters, merch, books and every now and then actual living and fleshy musicians. This is Rough Trade East located in the historically nuanced Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane. Pond, the Perth Aussie psych-rockers were treating the people of London, Engalaaand (as Nick Allbrook charmingly referred to us as) to a free afternoon show. This was all in the name of good old fashioned promotion, ground roots style, having just released their new album Man, It Feels Like Space Again. This show was AMAZING!! The sound was good, the people was cool, the place is awesome and of course... It's Pond. It reminds me to Tame Impala a lot. Although, they are different in their own way. I loved the psychedelic vibe and the presence they have playing live. It was a really solid show. The audio engineer Adam Round was incredible as well. I have no complains at all. One of the best bands I have seen live. I kinda feel bad because Temples was playing at the same time in another place, but the show was so good that it does not matter. I'll Temples later.

Pond puts on a helluva show. Ton of energy no matter how much touring and traveling they've been up to. They have a unique psychedelic funky punk rock vibe going on that brought the mid-week crowd to life. Great show, can't wait to see these guys continue to blow up.

I hate to make the comparison, but I've seen Tame Impala 9 times and they're my favorite to watch live. Correction, were. I have a new favorite live band now after last night. I should charge Pond for my medical bills after melting my face so hard!

Pond share psychedelic new single ‘Neon River’ and announce world tour dates

The track follows their 2021 LP '9'

Pond. Credit: Michael Tartaglia

Pond have shared their psychedelic new single ‘Neon River’ and have announced 2024 US, UK and EU tour dates.

  • READ MORE:  Pond face the chaos on new album ‘9’: “The world’s getting real fucking scary”

“Neon river making me shiver / Black gown and a wing / Neon river, holding my liver / Shaking as the city sinks,” sings frontman Nicholas Allbrook over a psychedelic rock guitar riff and pounding drums in the chorus of the track.

Speaking of ‘Neon River’ in a press release, the band said: “This is a full-on Pond Gemini song. Kinda tumbles through bucolic Gum (Jay Watson) larping, into Nick (Allbrook) in maximum Aerosmith spandex mode, with a brief detour into some kind of shoegaze instrumental section. The chorus is about the hollow half-dead riverside shuffle of so many pre-dawns of years gone by.”

The track’s accompanying music video sees a medieval LARP (Live Action Role Play) troupe meet a lonely hair-metal wanderer, who leads them on a pop-metal odyssey to fulfill their destiny.

The track follow’s the band’s previous full-length release, 2021’s ‘ 9 ‘. In a four-star review of the album , NME shared: “It’s can be a risky game to thrown yourself into so many different styles on a record, let alone within individual songs. Yet – from  Bowie  to  Kurt Cobain and William Burroughs – artists of all kinds have found joy in such surrealist methods of cutting up their work and putting it back together. Having perhaps taken their psych-pop to the edges of what’s possible, Pond deserve this moment. Hopefully, it proves a gateway to a new era for the band that keeps on giving.”

The band have also shared a run of tour dates that will see them performing in the US, UK and EU. Following a string of shows in Australia and New Zealand as opening support for Queens Of The Stone Age , Pond will set off on their rescheduled US tour dates in May followed by their return to the UK and EU in autumn. Check out the full tour dates below and visit here to purchase tickets for the US and here for tickets in the UK .
