Pro Tour the Lord of the Rings was the final Pro Tour of the 2022–23 season . It took place on July 28-30, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain. It followed the release of the straight-to-Modern set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth , and the first Modern Pro Tour after the return of the Pro Tour Label. Additionally, it was the final Pro Tour before 2023 World Championship , so it was the final chance to earn AMP and lock up a slot.

With most of Constructed Magic being relegated to MTG Arena from 2020 to 2023, Modern had been upended multiple times as to be basically unrecognizable from Mythic Championship IV Barcelona , especially with the release of Modern Horizons 2 .

The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters , released in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth , were expected to make waves in the now turbulent format, by upgrading Tron and Rakdos decks, respectively. Additionally, the land-cycling spells introduced in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth were additions to the Living End and Crashing Footfalls decks. Delighted Halfling and Samwise Gamgee made appearances in select decks as a mana-dork and combo piece, respectively.

Javier Dominguez and Simon Nielsen make it back-to-back Pro Tour Top 8's, joined by two Italian players in Marco Del Pivo and Stefano Vinci. Additionally, Kai Budde would reach his tenth career top eight. Sadly, on this Sunday, the promise "Kai does not lose" would be broken, as Christian Calcano would beat him in the quarterfinals, en route to the finals, piloting a Mono-Green Tron deck. There he would face Jake Beardsley , who in his first Pro Tour, cheered on by commentators and fans, would win the day with a Rakdos Evoke Deck.

MTG Pro Tour Barcelona Lord of the Rings standings, format, and more

Over 250 of the best Magic: The Gathering players from around the globe competed in the Modern format and The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Limited Draft at the final Pro Tour of the 2022-2023 season.

For the first time since 2019, the Modern format was featured at a high-level MTG tournament at the final Pro Tour of the season. Much like Pro Tour Minneapolis and the Phyrexian Pro Tour , players at the Lord of the Rings Pro Tour Barcelona competed in a mix of Limited Draft and Constructed Swiss rounds.

Both day one and day two featured three rounds of LTR Draft, followed by five rounds of Modern Constructed. All players who made it to the top eight earned a direct invite to the Magic World Championship. 

July 28, MTG Pro Tour Lord of the Rings standings

Day one of Pro Tour Barcelona showcased three rounds of LTR Draft, playing a significant role in who advances to day two, in addition to five rounds of Modern Constructed. All players with a record of 4-4, or 12 match points advanced to day two of the Lord of the Rings Pro Tour in Barcelona . 

Following the LTR Draft rounds, 32 players had a perfect record of 3-0 heading into the Modern Constructed Swiss rounds.

After five rounds during day one—three through LTR Draft and two in Modern Constructed—eight players still had an undefeated record.

Ending day one undefeated was Simon Nielsen, defeating Dimir Control, Jeskai Breach, Mono-Green Tron, and Four-Color Omnath in addition to sweeping opponents during the LTR Draft rounds. Sitting number two was Greg Orange, with a 7-0-1 record, followed by players like Kai Budde and Zachary Klihne.

Day two began with another three rounds of LTR Draft, followed by up to five rounds of Modern Constructed. All players who hit 13 match wins, or 39 match points, automatically advanced to the top eight playoffs on day three and earned an invite to the Magic World Championship .

Nielsen entered day two of the MTG Lord of the Rings Pro Tour with a Worlds invite already and an undefeated record from day one. And he kept that record going, earning three more round wins during day two of LTR Draft to have an 11-0 record heading into the Modern Constructed rounds.

In addition to Nielsen going undefeated during day two of the LTR Draft, six other players also went 3-0: Marei Okamura, Gabriel Nassif, Sean Goddard, Tin Miheael Capar, Stephano Vinci, and Toru Inoue.

Heading into the two final Modern Constructed rounds, Nielsen and Dominguez sought to hit 13 wins and advance to the final day of Pro Tour Barcelona. Also having a shot of making it to the top eight were players like Greg Orange, Alexander Hayne, Gabriel Nassif, and Kai Budde.

First to lock up a top-eight slot was Javier Dominguez, playing Mono-Green Tron. It was Dominguez’s second top-eight finish this season. And right behind Dominguez was another World Champion securing a top-eight finish, Kai Budde.

Joining Dominguez and Budde in the top eight at Pro Tour Lord of the Rings were Calcano, Nielsen, Beardsley, Del Piveo, Vinci, and Harvey.

July 30, MTG Pro Tour Lord of the Rings standings

The top-eight playoffs featured gameplay through Modern Constructed only, with players competing in the best three-out-of-five games. And players were allowed to start side-boarding after game two. Pairings for the quarterfinals were Dominguez vs Harvey, Beardsley vs Del Pivo, Calcano vs Budde, and Nielsen vs Vinci.

Calcano and Mono-Green Tron swept Budde and his Temur Rhino’s deck. Mono-Green also dominated Temur Rhino in the Nielsen and Vinci matchup, with Nielsen winning the quarterfinal match 3-1. Harvey and his Amulet Titan Modern deck knocked out World Champion Dominguez and his Mono-Green Tron deck 3-1. And Beardsley on Rakdos Evoke beat out Marco Del Pivo and his Temur Rhinos deck 3-1.

Beardsley continued his win streak by defeating Harvey 3-1 and Calcano advanced past Nielsen in the Mirror Mono-Green Tron matchup to play against Beardsley in the final match of Pro Tour Lord of the Rings .

The final match of the day went five games, with Beardsley winning over Calcano to earn the Pro Tour Lord of the Rings title.

MTG Pro Tour 2023: Full List of Dates, Cities

The MTG Pro Tour is a series of top-level competitions for Magic: The Gathering . It pits the best of the best against one another for huge cash prizes, as well as fame and glory in the trading card game community. Here are the details.

To enter the Pro Tour, players must first qualify via a Local Qualifier and a Regional Qualifier. These two events come together in the Pro Tour, where players from different regions play against one another in one massive event. The year is then capped off by the World Championship, which has a massive cash prize and the opportunity for the winner to be memorialized in an upcoming Magic card.

Here's how the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season will shake out according to the Magic Wiki:

In between each event is a Regional Championship that will allow players to qualify for the Pro Tour, in addition to finalists from previous Pro Tours. Lastly, the Magic World Championship will be held Sept. 22-24, 2023 at MagicCon Las Vegas, USA, marking the grand finale of the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season.

Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition trilogy is returning to theaters in gloriously remastered 4K UHD this summer. Warner Bros. Discovery is rereleasing the films with Fathom Events, at certain AMC, Regal, and Cinemark Theaters around North America.

Andy Serkis stars in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy

The Fellowship of the Rings , the 2001 film that launched the adaptation franchise, will screen on Saturday, June 8th. Then on Sunday, June 9th, comes the sequel The Two Towers . The final chapter Return of the King screens Monday June 10th.

The trilogy re-release comes ahead of this year’s Christmas season theatrical release of the anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim . The anime will be considered canonical within Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, along with the ongoing Amazon Prime live-action series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power .

Lord of the Box Office

The Lord of the Rings original trilogy films combined for a massive $2.93 billion in global box office in their previous releases. These remastered and extended cuts have never been seen in theaters before, however. Besides the success of the original three films, there is the added benefit of the tie-in The Hobbit prequel trilogy and it’s additional $2.9 billion in the franchise mountain of gold, bringing the total series box office cume to a staggering $5.8 billion across six films from 2001 to 2014.

That’s a nearly $1 billion grossing film almost every other year for 14 years, a spectacular achievement dwarfed only by the grander achievement of the filmmaking itself, taking more than half a decade in production on all three films simultaneously .

Amazon Prime Video s Best New Show Arrives With A Perfect 100 Critic Score

Don’t expect any such impressive numbers with this re-releases, of course. Each film gets only a single day in theaters, and only in participating theaters at that (a few hundred in total). I’m merely noting the films have a tremendous pedigree and are widely known to be iconic films worthy of big-screen treatment and viewing.

For perspective, the 2020 re-release of The Fellowship of the Rings took just under $600,000, and the 2021 release of both The Two Towers and The Return of the King combined for about $800,000. But the 20th anniversary re-release of The Return of the King last year scored another $1.1 million. So all told, The Lord of the Rings trilogy’s most recent attempts at re-release grossed a total of roughly $2.5 million.

These numbers exclude the earlier re-releases for the films, which combined for $2.3 million when all three films briefly returned to theaters in 20211. And it’s worth noting that The Fellowship of the Rings: Extended Edition did in fact get a theatrical release in 2003, taking $1.4 million.

While it won’t move the box office needle much, the re-release is a nice promotional strategy that earns free media publicity and some box office dollars to boot. With such an otherwise sluggish year ahead, audiences eager for meatier viewing might just show up in solid numbers for the per-screen box office count.

Revolutionary Filmmaking and VFX

The Lord of the Rings was already magnificent and met with both critical and audience acclaim, as well as winning Oscars for categories including Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.

However, the Extended Editions are now widely considered the definitive viewing choice among fans and cinephiles. Seeing The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions in 4K UHD on home entertainment already drives home just how revolutionary and game-changing the films and their production really were, so imagine the impact when you see them on the big screen again in this fuller, intensified vision.

Weta Digital’s mind-blowing visual effects hold up perfectly today, and watching the remastered extended cuts on the big screen won’t remotely suffer at all from comparisons to current big-budget visual effects productions.

Indeed, Weta’s work on The Lord of the Rings , like their equally brilliant work on the Planet of the Apes films , stand alongside James Cameron’s Avatar as the standard bearers for modern mo-cap and immersive CGI world-building. The 4K UHD remastering further accentuates how much detail and realism went into every frame.

In a remarkable ensemble cast, Andy Serkis’ stands out for his nuanced, tragic performance as Gollum. And the accompanying motion-capture remain one of the greatest examples of mo-cap and CGI character performance in cinema, alongside Serkis’ lead performance work with Weta in the Planet of the Apes reboot films.

Few live-action characters live up to the emotional weight and dramatic performances Serkis delivers, and it remains a glaring oversight that the Academy Awards overlooked the actor’s revolutionary performances in these films.

The Lord of the Rings franchise was the definition of immersive world-building, of blockbuster genre adaptation, of the dawn of a new era in cinematic visual effects and what would be possible in storytelling. Audiences and fans are lucky for the chance to return to Middle Earth in glorious and revitalized style.

‘Fallout’ Explodes as Prime Video’s Most-Watched Title Globally With 65 Million Viewers

In its first 16 days, Amazon’s video game adaptation ranks as the streamer’s top title among adults 18-34

“Fallout” has exploded as Prime Video’s most-watched title globally within the first 16 days since its release.

The video game adaptation brought in more than 65 million viewers since it first debuted on April 10, according to internal data from the streamer. “Fallout” ranked as the No. 1 most-watched title on Prime Video in 170 countries, with more than 60% of the show’s audience originating internationally, including the U.K., France and Brazil.

Overall, the Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins-led series ranks as the second most-watched title on Prime Video to date in its first 16 days after the debut of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which premiered in September 2022.

“Fallout” was also buzzy among younger audiences, with “Fallout” standing out as the most-watched title ever on Prime Video among adults 18-34.

The viewership news follows the show’s speedy Season 2 renewal , which came just eight days after the series debuted. At the time of the renewal, Prime Video touted that “Fallout” stood in the streamer’s top three most-watched titles ever and was the most-watched season globally since “Rings of Power.”

Starring Purnell as optimistic Vault-dweller Lucy, “Fallout” is set 200 years after the apocalypse and follows “the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters [who] are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them,” per the official logline.

Purnell stars alongside Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus, a young soldier climbing the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Goggins, who plays bounty hunter the Ghoul. The three cross paths as they chase an alluring artifact with the potential to change the world.

Hailing from Amazon MGM Studios and Kilter Films and in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks, “Fallout” is created and showrun by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Kilter Films’ Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy serve as executive producers alongside Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks.

‘The Lord Of The Rings’ Extended And Remastered Editions Are Coming To Theaters For The First Time

With every passing year (and every instantly forgotten streaming service action movie ), the Lord of the Rings films seem like even more of a miracle. Peter Jackson ‘s trilogy — The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers , and Best Picture winner The Return of the King — are rightly hailed as modern classics. And great Christmas movies , even if they have nothing to do with Christmas. Do hobbits even celebrate a Christmas-like holiday? (That’s a redundant question: please do not direct me towards the 700 page entry in The History of Middle-earth that gets into the history of holidays in the Shire.)

You can still have your annual winter-time viewing of the battle at Helm’s Deep during the holidays, but this year, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events are re-releasing the trilogy into theaters during the summer. According to The Hollywood Reporter , “the versions screened will be Jackson’s extended editions (so you might want get the jumbo tub of popcorn), and also the versions that the filmmaker remastered in 2020 for a 4K Ultra HD rerelease. This is the first time the remastered versions will be in theaters.”

Star Wars Movies In Order: How To Watch Release Order, Chronologically & With The TV Shows

Darth revan's new mask features both the helmet and a fabric hood, looks to be as good as black series replicas.

An exciting feature is that the Darth Revan helmet comes with its own fabric hood . Likewise, the entire Old Republic era is still part of the official canon, even if its specific events have yet to be revealed in the current Star Wars timeline. Perhaps future Star Wars projects will find a way to facilitate Revan's return, though this new replica is a fun way to celebrate the classic Knights of the Old Republic character in the meantime.

NFL Draft 2024: How Chiefs' Xavier Worthy became part of Pro Football Hall of Fame before playing an NFL down

Worthy is once again making history.

Most players work their entire lives in hopes of one day being enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. In order to get that gold jacket and see themselves in the Hall, they have to put in years of practices and games in order to make their mark in the league and get voted in.

Kansas City Chiefs first-round pick Xavier worthy had a much faster time getting into the Hall of Fame. He has not played a down in the NFL yet, but he already is featured in a display in Canton. 

Worthy made himself Pro football Hall of Fame worthy when he broke the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Scouting Combine with a time of 4.21 seconds. The jersey and shoes he wore when he broke the record were sent to Canton,  the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Monday.

The artifacts are on display in the Hall of Fame's "Pro Football Today Gallery." This is the first time the Hall of Fame has accepted items used by a prospect at the NFL combine.

The previous 40-yard dash record at the NFL combine was set by John Ross , who ran a 4.22 in 2017.

After he set the record, Worthy said , "It's crazy. I watched the combine my whole life as a kid. Since John Ross ran that (4.22), I never thought I'd be on this stage and run that. My trainer told me to just be patient and peak at the right time. It all came at the right time. If you feel like you can do it, just do it."

The 21-year-old wide receiver out of Texas was selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Chiefs traded with the Buffalo Bills to move up and select Worthy.
