A very elusive bus service

We have used hop on hop off buses in many cities and have found them to be good value. Once you are on the Moscow bus it is good value, as it goes to most of the places we wanted to see and has a good commentary. The problem is actually finding the bus. The map on the internet shows about 17 stops, and we caught the metro from our hotel to Kitai Gorod station and then walked to bus stop 12. We didn't find it, and it turned out that none of the stops has any sign or any staff. We kept walking to where stop 11 is supposed to be, again there was no sign, and we finally managed to flag the bus down about 200m further down hill from 'stop 11' towards Red Square. We spent more than an hour trudging around looking for a stop, and this was a very poor start to the tour. The staff, who were quite friendly and spoke good English, told us there were no signs because it was a new service and had been operating for 'only 2 years'. The best way of catching this bus is to go to one of the main attractions such as Red Square, but the idea of a service like this is to take visitors to the main attractions, not just to meet them there.

You can hop on and hop off once... if you do not want to spend most of your day around Moscow waiting for one of the buses to show up. Maybe because in this part of the season they have actually only one bus for each line going around. Plus, without informing, they also take their time for lunch!!! For us it meant waiting in the terrible heat of these days from 13.45 to 14.30 for the red line bus, while the green line bus in the afternoon did not show up at all, after waiting for almost one hour. The only way to enjoy the experience is to do the whole tour on both lines and then go back to the most efficient way to move around in Moscow, the metro... or just walking.

Dear Costumer Service, With regret I have to write our strong disappointment when in Moscow we had our pre-paid (by my husband's credit card online) 2 day tour with boat cruise in Moscow and were upset to discover on Sundays only the Green line works, on the following day, the Red line was working until 3pm because of a holiday and the explanation given to us by the guide was only 'Moscow don't work now. it's a holiday' while rushing 2 old ladies off the bus in order to do finish his last stop (at 3pm on a Monday!) and get off the stop ASAP. Not only that, our regret to have bought this tickets in advance came when on that Sunday the guide barely spoke 'little English' as she stated, decided to read a book while we were all left lost in the bus with absolutely no advise of the stops (e.g what was the stop number?) and when asked, she seemed lost on the itinerary and just told us a #4 but it was clearly not as we were close to #23. There was also NO indication where the bus stops, so if we decided to walk a number and then get the bus on the other stop then it was impossible to do because there are simply NO MARKS AT ALL on the streets. We are strongly disappointed with the service, the company, the money paid that definitely did not worth it, specially in a city like Moscow. We also bought for Copenhagen that was extremely helpful and worth it, but the Moscow's was a complete waste of money and nervs. To offer a service like this, it's better not to offer a service at all. It spoiled our days and plans in Moscow!

I have been on these bus tours in numerous cities in the World, and this one was similar to all of them. It was £12 a ticket, that lasted for 24hours from the time of purchase. We only went on the red line tour as we were only in the city for 3 days and didn't have too much time. Although the red line tour covered places that you could easily walk to, it was a fantastic way to see the city and learn some of the history. However, Moscow is a busy city so there was often times when we were just stuck in traffic and there wasn't always something to listen to on the commentary or there was no music playing.

Compared to the other European cities, we were given new earphones every time we got on the bus, which is very good and hygiene. We enjoyed both the bus and boat tours. It's a fantastic way to start your trip in Moscow just to know where things are and how they look like. The boat tour isn't as nice as those in Saint Petersburg but it definitely gave you a fantastic opportunities to take photos.

We visted Moscow in December when it was very cold. We saw a lot of attractions on foot but we'd been walking for a long time and wanted to get in from the cold. The tickets were approximatley £12 each and covered the day of purchase and all the next day regardless of the time of purchase on the first day (not just 48 hours). There are two tours, the red tour which is about one hour and a green tour which is about two hours. We took both tours one on each day. All the commentry is recorded and headphones are provided. I thought the commentry was quite good althought there are quite a lot of pauses. We found it best to listen to the commentry in conjunction with our guide book. As it was midweek in December the buses were quiet but were still regular. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. If I were planning the trip again I would arrange a tour with a guide however we were very happy with the bus tour and thought it represented very good value for money with good quality overall.

After you visited the ancient Kremlin, explored the area of Kitay Gorod and enjoyed the sights of White city, it's time to move on and take a ride along the 17th century border of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After we explore the Stalin skyscraper -  building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we will turn to Old Arbat pedestrian zone. You will see lovely houses of 19 centuries and feel the atmosphere of old Moscow, as the Arbat preserved it almost untouched.

In 90-s Arbat was chosen by the members of numerous subcultures as the place for hangout. Nowadays Arbat is Bohemian place and one of Moscow's symbols. But long time ago it was just a suburb.

Soon we’ll find ourselves on New Arbat, that was founded in 60-s, and was conceived as a government road. This New Arbat dramatically differs from the Old Arbat.

Patriarch Ponds

One more beloved place among the Muscovites with a very rich history. A lots of famous and outstanding personalities lived in this area: poets, scientists, militaries and even criminals. In 17 century Patriarch Hermogenus founded a Patriarch's village here, hence the name. Moreover, this place is famous all over the world thanks to the genius Russian writer M. Bulgakov. He chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene of his novel "The Master and Margarita".

Hermitage Garden

The next coziest and memorable place for all of Muscovites is Hermitage Garden. Before the Revolution it was a Bohemian place, frequently attended by the great actors and writers, art workers, and patrons. Here for the first time in Moscow a movie of Lumiere's brothers was shown. Today tradition continues and there are two theaters inside the park, lots of memorials and fun.

Museon Park & Gorky Park

Today Muscovites can't imagine their leisure activities without visiting Museon Statues Park and Gorky Park. These are fun areas. What is the garden ring in moscow.

Actually, we call the Garden Ring  a series of streets, separated by the squares.

A great number of fascinating and historical places a re situated on the Garden Ring.  Traveling along that street, you can briefly learn about all main areas of Moscow, learn its history and meaning. It will help you to navigate Moscow better and surely you can feel more like a local on this tour.

Every square on the Garden Ring has its own historical background. For example, Sukharevskaya square in 19 century hosted a market. It was very popular among Muscovites, but usually stolen things were sold there. Often people had to buy there their own stuff again after it was stolen. The Smolenskaya, Crimean, Serpukhovskaya, Taganskaya squares were market places too.

Triumphalnaya square bears its name in memory of triumphal arch that stood here to commemorate the victory over Sweden, built by the order of Peter the Great, as well as Red Gate square placed another triumphal arch. In the beginning of 20 century Triumphal square was a cultural place. Several theaters were situated there, Meyerhold’s theater among them, a circus and a park.

Three squares of the Garden Ring became real battlefields during the revolution between the bolsheviks and tsar's supporters in 1917. And finally capitulation of royal regime was signed in the building, situated on the Garden Ring.

"And the Garden ring became a wedding ring to us…"

These are words from the official soundtrack to the very popular soviet movie "Moscow does not believe in tears" that has won an American Academy Award for the best foreign language film in 1980. Not coincidentally Garden Ring is mentioned in this song as a symbol of Moscow. As it is very important part of our city, it reflects all historical events beginning from the end of 16th century.

A Garden Ring? No. An earthern rampart!

The territory outside White city's wall was called Earthern city . The Earthern city was an area were traditionally poor citizens used to settle: peasants and craftsmen. In comparison with the White city this area has always been dirty and less prestigious. For example, in White city streets were paved in stone and buildings stood on the stone basements while Earthern city had only wooden houses.

This area was proclaimed as a part of Moscow only in 1593. And great fortification wooden wall, that surrounded the territory of Earthern city, was erected by the order of tsar Fyodor Ioannovich only in a year and was called "Skorodom" - fast-built house. Outside Skorodom was additionally fortificated with the moat and the rampart.

In Times of Troubles Skorodom was burnt down by Poles and restored by the Great Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich the Silent. Finally it had 57 towers and 11 entry gates.  Nowadays on that spots, where gates once stood, you can spot the main squares of Moscow.

Skorodom was destroyed and restored a lot's of times: during the Times of Troubles, Napoleon's invasion, in frequent Moscow fires. And finally in 1830 Skorodom was demolished as it lost its functions.

Miraculous transfiguration on Stalin’s orders

In 1917 the Great October revolution blew up everything that seemed to be right at that time. And in 1930-s Moscow was reconstructed… again. This time communists were making Moscow a model of communistic city. Surely that large-scale reconstruction touched the Garden Ring. The road was widened up to 60-70 meters, paved and became a ring with the help of new bridges: Crimean and Krasnokholmskiy. Since that time the Garden Ring is considered the main artery of Moscow.
