Hi All, I hope you are all keeping safe.

I am still waiting on a reply from Air Canada re my application for a refund as my direct route to Vancouver from Dublin was cancelled/suspended for this year. They are now re routing us via Toronto on the same days which adds hours on to our trip out and back.

I just noticed on the Air Canada web site that the vouchers they are offering do not have an expiry date . I also got an email from Aeroplan that the Air Canada Travel Vouchers are fully transferable and has no expiry date, which seems far better than 3 days ago when I rang.

Has anyone seen this or even used it yet ??, I would prefer to get a refund but that may not be an option.

Also it was stated that value could be converted to Aeroplan Miles plus an additional 65% bonus. Is there any value in this as I have never used Aeroplan miles.

Yes, they have made them transferrable and no expiry date. No, they cannot be used for ACV as they are not the same company, I don't use Aeroplan miles so can't say if that would be worth it or not.

What's more interesting, is that AC's voucher announcement has come on the heels of a lawyer here in Vancouver seeking a class action lawsuit against AC for not providing refunds, only vouchers. People are upset with the idea of getting vouchers, not refunds.

It is also good to be aware that our Prime Minister has said that international travel to Canada may take many months, even to there being a widely available vaccine. To flatten the curve, most Canadians have been staying at home for 2 months now. All but 2 provinces have flattened the curve. Most Canadians really don't want to jeopardize that success and some additional socialising by permitting international and American visitors into the country. The voucher that doesn't expire and is transferable has just gained value over the ones with the 24 hour expiry date.

Many people use Aeroplan all the time, so maybe it's just me. I prefer to book the flight I want for the best value I can find, directly from the airline and use my Aeroplan for bookings that I make. Hotels, ferries, restaurants, rental car , any purchases that are travel related. That requires just a phone call and the identifying of the purchases I want t claim. They take the value of my miles and pay down the visa bill.

I would like to try and understand the Aeroplan points a bit better so maybe others can explain as I have never used these before. My tickets value at the moment is approx €1300, what way would they value that in points ??. They have said they will also add 65% extra with this option instead of the voucher.

I worry that say you accept the Aeroplan points and a lots of others who use this do also, What if Air Canada then devalue their Aeroplan points system.

Also they say transferable, what does that actually mean in voucher terms ?? and could they attach conditions to it if you actually accept the vouchers.

My membership with Aeroplan is through a TD bank (Toronto Dominion) credit card. CIBC bank (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) is also a partner in Aeroplan. The annual card fees vary according to the plan you enrol in.

For flights within Canada the value is much better as I have found that the fees are around 1/10 to 1/5 of the lowest priced tickets.

I now use my points only on flights within Canada.

Like all frequent flyer programs, Aeroplan has its sweet spots and tricks to unlock the most value. Additionally, if you have status with Air Canada, you get even more value, because I don't have to pay most of the fees and surcharges that others complain about. I find good value in the program, and probably redeem about 500,000 miles every year, and am largely happy with the value I get. The concern about miles being devalued in the future to changes to the program is a valid risk, and one to be concerned about in all frequent flyer programs, and why I don't like to sit on too big of a miles balance.

I think offering Aeroplan miles might be good value for people who currently use the program. If you're not a regular Air Canada flyer, or savvy with frequent flyer programs, I think you'd get much more value out of the voucher than miles which will have questionable use for you.

Air Canada’s Aeroplan program has a lot to offer with valuable rewards, low fees and plenty of partners on which to redeem your points. Another popular feature: the ability to add a stopover city to your flight for just 5,000 points. Here’s everything you should know about Aeroplan points — from earning to redeeming them for top value.

What are Aeroplan points?

Aeroplan points are the rewards you can earn with Air Canada’s Aeroplan loyalty program. There are many ways to earn these points, and the options for using them are even greater. Let’s look at both elements so you can make the most of this lucrative loyalty program.

How to earn Air Canada Aeroplan points

While the most obvious way to earn Aeroplan points is to fly Air Canada, you also can earn by shopping, ordering food, staying in hotels and more. Aeroplan’s partner earning page lists multiple ways to earn Aeroplan points. 

With the Aeroplan eStore, you can earn bonus points for shopping with or buying gift cards from more than 200 retail partners. Rates can include up to 10 points per Canadian dollar of spending (roughly 75 cents) with partners like Dell, Lululemon or Dyson, while you’ll earn a more standard 1 point per CA$1 spent with Apple and Best Buy.

Link your Aeroplan account with your Uber account and earn on rides or Uber Eats orders of CA$40 ($29.87) or more. Those in Canada can link their Aeroplan and Starbucks Rewards accounts to earn points when buying coffee or food or reloading their Starbucks card.

You also can earn Aeroplan points when traveling, even if you’re staying on the ground. Nearly a dozen hotel loyalty programs allow you to opt to earn Aeroplan points from stays. For example, you can forego IHG One Rewards or Marriott Bonvoy points, instead earning up to 2 Aeroplan points per $1 spent on your stay. It’s also possible to earn up to 10,000 Aeroplan points per night when booking a hotel through Rocketmiles and from booking multiple independent hotels through Air Canada Hotels .

Other options for earning points on travel include renting cars with Avis, Budget or Payless, parking at several major airports in Canada or traveling with Rocky Mountaineer, the luxury train service in Canada. Offers vary by partner but can provide up to 20,000 points for booking a train trip or up to 2 Aeroplan points per CA$1 (75 cents) for renting a car. Air Canada Vacations also offers as much as 12,000 bonus points on some travel package bookings.

When flying with Air Canada, you’ll earn points based on the distance flown and class of travel. You also can earn points from onboard purchases on Air Canada flights and shopping for duty-free items through Air Canada’s shop. When flying with one of Air Canada’s more than 45 partner airlines, earnings vary by partner. Typically, you’ll earn based on the fare code on your ticket, earned as a percentage of the distance flown. For example, if you book a basic economy ticket with United Airlines (N class) and credit this to your Aeroplan account, you’ll earn 25% of the miles flown as Aeroplan points.

Air Canada also offers a range of co-branded credit cards. While there are multiple Aeroplan credit cards available in Canada — issued by American Express, CIBC and TD Bank — the sole Aeroplan co-branded card available in the U.S. comes from Chase. How to redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points

The best way to redeem Air Canada Aeroplan points is for flights. Whether you’re looking for short domestic flights or long-haul options, there are valuable redemptions to be found in both the front and back of the plane.

Aeroplan uses a combination of zone-based and distance-based award pricing, meaning you’ll need to find the pricing that applies to the zones you’re flying from and to (or the chart for flights within a particular zone) then find the pricing for the distance that applies to your flight.

There are four zones: North America, South America, Atlantic and Pacific. Note that the Atlantic zone extends all the way from Greenland to Bangladesh, including Africa, while the Pacific zone includes half of Russia all the way down to Australia and New Zealand.

For regions where Air Canada operates flights, you’ll see separate pricing for Air Canada-operated flights and for partner airlines. If Air Canada doesn’t operate flights within that zone (such as within the Atlantic zone) you’ll see just one set of pricing for each distance band.

Here is the pricing for redemptions within the North America zone as an example:

Notice that there are ranges of prices for Air Canada-operated flights, meaning you may not always find redemption bookings available at the lowest price; depending on seat availability and how many people have already booked an award on that flight, you may see prices at the higher end of the range.

To redeem Aeroplan points, head to aircanada.com . Input your start and end points, number of passengers and travel dates. You also can choose to search for a one-way, round-trip, or multi-city/stopover booking. Click the book-with-points box.

In this sample search from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Aeroplan provides five days’ worth of results, and you can click between them easily to explore options.

Filters also allow for sorting flights by the number of stops, connecting airports, aircraft type, class and flights with availability to use eUpgrades.

Clicking the arrows inside the colored boxes for economy class and business class allows you to sort your results by cheapest or most expensive flight in either fare type. Each flight result will have a “Details” option, which you can click to see flight duration, aircraft type and flight number.

After selecting a flight, you’ll be presented with options for fare types. Included with the options is a chart comparing the different fees for changes or cancellations, whether checked bags are included and whether seat selection is included. Some of this information will be blank if the flight is operated by a partner airline, such as this example for a flight with United Airlines.

Once you’ve chosen your flight and fare type, you’ll have options for choosing how many points and how much cash you’d like to pay toward your flight. Aeroplan allows you to pay extra points to avoid using cash for the departure taxes and airport fees charged on award tickets. 

What are Air Canada Aeroplan points worth?

The value obtained from Aeroplan points changes based on how you’re using them, but you should aim for a value of roughly 1.4 cents per point. There’s a simple way to calculate the value of points in a redemption: Take the amount of money you’ll save by using points and divide that by the number of points required. Let’s look at the option to pay 6,000 points plus CA$46.60 ($34.79) for a flight above. United is charging $69 for this flight, but using points won’t save $69. Using points will save $34.69 — $69 minus the cash portion of what Aeroplan requires for this booking. Dividing $34.69 by 6,000 points provides 0.00578; that’s 0.578 cents per point, or just over half a cent for each point. That’s pretty low value. 

If the cost of that flight went up (think holiday travel) to $125, the situation would be different. Subtracting the taxes and fees ($34.31) from $125 gives a cash savings of $90.69 for using 6,000 points. This becomes a value of 1.5 cents per point, so that would provide a valuable redemption of Aeroplan points.

Best ways to use Air Canada Aeroplan points

The best value for using Aeroplan points comes from booking flights where the cash cost is relatively higher than the cost in points. Here are some of our favorites.

Short-distance domestic flights on United Airlines 

While we saw an example of this pricing above, let’s look at when it’s worth booking a short domestic flight with United Airlines for 6,000 Aeroplan points. Thanks to taxes and Aeroplan’s partner award fee, plan to pay roughly $34.62 in addition to your 6,000 points for flights under 500 miles.

While you can find plenty of cheap flights from Boston to Newark or Los Angeles to San Francisco, consider flights to smaller cities with less competition and higher prices. 

This flight from San Francisco to California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV) in northern California still costs 6,000 points, but the cash fare is $190. 

After accounting for the taxes and fees on the award redemption, you’ll get a redemption value of nearly 2.6 cents per point on this 89-minute flight. For flights up to 1,500 miles in distance, the price will increase to 10,000 Aeroplan points.

West Coast to Hawaii with United Airlines 

Flights to Hawaii on United Airlines also provide good value — though, again, not every day. When there are sales offering cheap tickets to the Aloha State, the value for using points isn’t as good. But weekends or holidays can lead to inflated pricing without a corresponding jump in Aeroplan points required for the flight.

Consider this flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu for 12,500 points and roughly $44.93 in taxes and fees.

For a fee, these tickets are refundable. And if you want the same privileges when booking with United in cash, you’ll pay extra for it.

To get a refundable economy ticket on this same flight, United charges $208. After accounting for the $44.93 in taxes and fees, you’ll save $163.07 by using 12,500 points. That’s a redemption value of 1.3 cents per point. 

East Coast to Europe in business class 

Flights under 4,000 miles will cost 60,000 points in business class, meaning flights from the East Coast to western or central Europe work well. Possible city pairs include New York City to Frankfurt, Toronto to Amsterdam or Boston to Zurich, as well as others.

This non-stop flight from Newark to Lisbon with TAP Portugal costs 35,000 points in economy or 60,000 points in lie-flat business class. You’ll pay roughly $56 in taxes and fees for either type of award.

However, at $2,449 for this business-class ticket, most people won’t pay that price for a flight.

After accounting for the $56 in fees, you’ll save nearly $2,400 and use your Aeroplan points at a fantastic 3.99 cents apiece.

Business class to southern South America 

While United Airlines and Air Canada tend to operate recliner seats to northern South America, such as flights to Bogota, you’ll get lie-flat business class on flights further south to destinations like Santiago, São Paulo and Buenos Aires. You can book those flights for just 60,000 Aeroplan points plus $56 in taxes and fees.

This United Polaris business-class ticket costs $2,302, meaning you’d save nearly $2,500 by using 60,000 points.

This provides a value of 3.74 cents per point.

Add a stopover to visit two destinations

Aeroplan allows you to add a stopover — a visit of more than 24 hours to a city along the route to your final destination — for just 5,000 extra points on your award bookings. Considering the cost of booking two flights separately, paying only 5,000 points can provide great value.

To search for a stopover itinerary, click on the multi-city/stopover option from the flight search page. Enter your starting and ending airports plus a stopover city. For the travel date, enter your flight start date, and the length of time you want to spend on your stopover. This can be anywhere from a single day to 45 days.

In this example, we’re taking the same business-class flight from Newark to Lisbon discussed above, paying 60,000 points for that flight. However, for 5,000 points, we’re continuing on to Madrid, still flying in business class.

It’s important to note that the stopover is most valuable if it doesn’t push your flying distance into the next price band. Both Newark–Lisbon and Newark–Madrid are under 4,000 miles, so the only additional cost is 5,000 points plus taxes and fees.

If booked separately, Aeroplan would charge 15,000 points for the flight from Lisbon to Madrid, so you’re saving 10,000 points by using a stopover instead of booking separate tickets.

Best credit cards for Air Canada Aeroplan points

There are multiple credit cards that can help you earn Aeroplan points, and most of them don’t say “Aeroplan” on the front of the card. Chase offers a credit card that earns Aeroplan points, but you also have the option to transfer points and miles from several other programs into your Aeroplan account.

The Aeroplan Card earns 3 points per $1 spent on dining, takeout and eligible delivery services, grocery stores and directly with Air Canada and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. Earn 500 points for every $2,000 spent in a month (maximum 1,500 points per month).

You’ll also get Aeroplan 25K Elite Status for the rest of the calendar year you open your account, plus the following calendar year. Other cardholder benefits include free first checked bags on Air Canada flights, an up to $100 statement credit to reimburse your application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS every four years and a 10% transfer bonus when moving at least 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points in single transaction from an eligible Chase credit card to your Aeroplan account (up to 25,000 bonus points per calendar year).

It’s also possible to move points from several bank rewards programs to Aeroplan at a 1-to-1 ratio, including American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One and Chase Ultimate Rewards. Thus, these cards can help you accrue Aeroplan points:

Air Canada Aeroplan transfer partners

As indicated above, it’s possible to move points from several other programs into your Aeroplan account. However, they don’t all provide the same value.

You can transfer points from American Express and Chase in increments of 1,000 points, and the ratio is excellent. For example, 1,000 Amex or Chase points will become 1,000 Aeroplan points. The same ratio applies to sending your Capital One miles to Aeroplan at a 1-to-1 ratio. And if you hold the Barclays Arrival® World Elite Mastercard® (which is not accepting new applicants at this time) you can turn 8,500 miles into 5,000 Aeroplan points.

Additionally, you can transfer points from a handful of hotel programs to Aeroplan, though the ratios for all but Marriott Bonvoy are quite poor.

• Marriott points to Aeroplan happens at a 3-to-1 ratio, but you’ll also get a bonus of 5,000 Aeroplan points when converting 60,000 or more Marriott points. That means 60,000 Marriott points become 25,000 Aeroplan points.
• Accor Live Limitless (ALL) transfers require increments of 4,000 points, and you’ll receive half that number of Aeroplan points in the end. Every 4,000 ALL points transfer yields 2,000 Aeroplan points. 
• Best Western points transferred to Aeroplan happens at a 5-to-1 ratio, and there’s no minimum transfer increment. 
• IHG One Rewards conversions happen at a 5-to-1 ratio, though you must convert in increments of 10,000 IHG points. Wyndham Rewards offers the same points transfer rate, though it requires a minimum of 6,000 points per transfer, yielding 1,200 Aeroplan points at this amount.
• Hilton Honors will get you 1,000 Aeroplan points for each 10,000 Hilton points transferred, and you must transfer in 10,000-point increments. This is the lowest ratio of your options.

While some of these transfer options aren’t very useful, it’s nice to know that they’re available. If you have points sitting dormant in one of these accounts or are earning points from a credit card in one of these programs, you can move them to your Aeroplan account if necessary.

Final verdict

With an impressive number of partner airlines and numerous ways to accrue points, Aeroplan is a useful, valuable loyalty program, even if you don’t plan to fly to Canada. You can earn points through recurring promotions, crediting paid flights to Aeroplan from its many partners, opening a co-branded credit card or moving points from other programs into your Aeroplan account.

When it’s time to redeem your Aeroplan points, options abound. You can use your points for vacations, rental cars and even gift cards, but the best option is redeeming them for flights. There are several sweet spots to consider for your Aeroplan points, and the greatest value may come from turning a vacation to one city into a visit to two locations, thanks to the inexpensive option for adding a stopover to your flight.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Yes, you can redeem Aeroplan points for both gift cards and merchandise. With gift cards, it’s possible to pay entirely with points, though this often happens at 0.6 to 0.7 cents per point — not the best value. For merchandise, you can pay in a combination of points and cash or entirely in points. Again, your points are typically worth 0.6 cents apiece here, and you can redeem them for much more value for flights. 

You can earn Aeroplan points through flights, hotel stays, using an Aeroplan co-branded credit card or by shopping on the Aeroplan shopping platform. You also can move points into your Aeroplan account from other rewards programs, including American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles and several hotel programs.

No, you can use Aeroplan points to fly on any of its partner airlines. These include all the members of Star Alliance, of which Air Canada is a member, and non-alliance airlines. At present, there are an impressive 53 airlines that partner with Air Canada, and you can use your Aeroplan points to book flights on 48 of these.

Typically, yes, though Aeroplan has paused its points expiration until Sept. 30, 2024. Once expiration resumes, your Aeroplan points will expire if you have no activity in your account for 18 months.

Lots! You can redeem for hotels, vacation packages, rental cars, merchandise, gift cards and, of course, flights. However, your flight options aren’t limited just to Air Canada. You can book flights on nearly four dozen airlines with your Aeroplan points.

Earning elite status varies by the airline. Typically, there is a requirement to fly a certain number of flights within the qualifying year (which may not be the same as the calendar year) and you may need to take a certain number of these flights with that airline — though flights on partner airlines also may be allowed for part of the requirement. Many U.S. airlines also have a spending component as part of earning elite status, and this varies by airline.

Air Canada’s Cancellation Policy: Flights Paid With Cash or Points

All customers have  24 hours  from the time of their original booking to cancel their reservation without being charged a  cancellation fee , regardless of the fare selected.

Air Canada will not allow you to cancel a basic economy ticket unless it is canceled within 24 hours from when it was purchased. However, there are some circumstances where you can cancel and request a refund if Air Canada changes your flight schedule by 2 hours or more, if you have military orders, or if you or your traveling companion dies.

Standard, Flex, and non-flexible business or premium economy fares are all categorized as non-refundable.

You will be charged a fee to cancel your ticket. The fee incurred will depend on the fare type you purchased. After you pay the fee, you can apply the unused value of your ticket toward a future trip as long as your new trip begins no later than 1 year from the ticket’s original issue date and you canceled the original ticket before the departure of the first flight.

Hot Tip: Non-refundable tickets can still be refunded in the event of the death of the passenger or passenger’s traveling companion or because of military orders. Supporting documentation is required.

Comfort, Latitude, and flexible premium economy or business fares are categorized as fully refundable. If you’ve purchased one of these tickets, cancellations can be made anytime before the departure of your flight, and the refund will be issued to your original credit card within 7 days (it should appear on your statement in 1-2 billing cycles).

If you’ve booked an award ticket with Air Canada and more than 24 hours have passed, the cancellation fee is $0 – $150 (depending on the fare type) for those who cancel via aeroplan.com and $0 – $175 (depending on the fare type) for those who cancel via an Aeroplan contact center.

Those with top-tier Altitude Super Elite 100k status with Air Canada will not be charged cancellation fees.

Air Canada’s Flight Change Policy

As with cancellations, all customers will have  24 hours from their original booking to change their reservation without being charged a fee, regardless of the fare selected.

Air Canada does not allow flight changes for those with basic economy tickets after the initial 24-hour window.

For Standard, Lowest Premium Economy, and Lowest Business class fares, after the 24-hour window has passed, Air Canada charges a change fee of $100. You must pay the price difference if you’re changing to a more expensive option.

If you purchased a Flex, Comfort, Latitude, flexible premium economy, or flexible business class ticket, you can change your ticket without being charged any additional fee. You must pay the price difference if you’re changing to a more expensive option. If you’re changing to a cheaper flight, the difference in fare will be refunded to your original payment method.

If you need to make a change to your award ticket, you can do so up to 2 hours before the flight departs — but you will be charged a fee depending on the fare class. The fee is $100 per direction for all ticket types. Those with Altitude Super Elite 100k will not be charged a fee.

The Air Canada fees for same-day changes are as follows:

• Basic Economy: not permitted
• Standard Fares: $150 ($100 for routes between Toronto and JFK, LaGuardia, or Newark airports)
• Flex and Lowest Premium Economy Fares: $75
• Comfort, Latitude, Flexible Premium Economy, and Business Class: $0
• Award Tickets: $100 per direction for all ticket types (those with Altitude Super Elite 100k will not be charged a fee)

Step 1: Log into your account on Air Canada’s homepage and select Manage Bookings .

Step 2: Select the booking you wish to cancel and click the Cancel Booking link.

Step 3: Once you have confirmed and finalized your cancellation, a confirmation email will be sent to the email you provided at the time of booking, and you’ll receive a voucher for any remaining funds after any potential cancellation fees.

Electronic travel vouchers are issued in the form of an email. Within the letter is your 13-digit electronic travel voucher number. Vouchers are transferable, and you can transfer the total or partial value of your electronic travel voucher to another person by calling Air Canada Reservations when you are ready to make a new reservation.

You can redeem your electronic travel voucher when you complete a booking on the Air Canada website by selecting a voucher as your payment method on the payment screen and then entering the voucher number.

If you’re worried that you may need to cancel your flight and want to make sure you can get a refund, a refundable ticket will be your best option, albeit more expensive.
