Royal Caribbean delays cruise ship after 8 crew members test positive for Covid
Royal Caribbean International is delaying the inaugural sailing of its Odyssey of the Seas cruise ship after eight crew members tested positive for Covid-19, officials said Tuesday.
"During routine testing, eight crew members received a positive test result for Covid-19," company CEO Michael Bayley said in a statement . "All 1,400 crew onboard Odyssey of the Seas were vaccinated on June 4th and will be considered fully vaccinated on June 18."
Out of the eight cases, six people were asymptomatic and two had mild symptoms, he said. All who tested positive for Covid-19, as well as hundreds of other crew members, are under quarantine and being monitored by a medical team.
Odyssey of the Seas' inaugural sailing, originally scheduled for July 3, is now set for July 31.
"While disappointing, this is the right decision for the health and well-being of our crew and guests," Bayley added.
The announcement came less than a week after two passengers tested positive for Covid-19 on Celebrity Millennium , another subsidiary owned by the Royal Caribbean Group.
The guests were asymptomatic and isolated as the two were being monitored by a medical team, the cruise line company said.
All guests were required to show a negative Covid-19 test and proof of vaccination 72 hours before its departure.
People who have tested positive for Covid-19 after being fully vaccinated, or breakthrough infections , are rare, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Of the more than 130 million people in the United States who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, there have been reports of at least 10,262 breakthrough infections, the CDC said last month. Many who tested positive after being fully vaccinated were asymptomatic.
The CDC gave the go-ahead to begin work toward restarting cruises last month for the first time in over a year after the massive ships became some of the first superspreader locations for the coronavirus.

Passengers on this Royal Caribbean ship can't catch a break
- It's been an unlucky month for Radiance of the Seas passengers .
- Three back-to-back Alaskan voyages have been canceled or delayed on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
- First, it was a technical issue with the ship's propulsion system. Then, bad weather struck.
Royal Caribbean canceled or delayed three back-to-back Alaska voyages on the Radiance of the Seas cruise ship in September, throwing a wrench into the (often expensive) travel plans of hundreds of customers.
The 2,500-passenger ship was scheduled to depart from Seward, Alaska on September 1 and Vancouver, Canada on September 8 for seven-night cruises along the Alaskan coast. Both voyages were canceled due to a technical issue with the ship's propulsion system, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.
But once repairs were completed, the ship remained sitting idle in Seward's harbor. Its next cruise, scheduled to depart on September 15, was delayed four days due to a storm forecasted to move through the Gulf of Alaska, a spokesperson for the cruise line told Insider.
Instead of spending seven days traveling to six ports of call (including Hubbard Glacier, Juneau, Skagway, Haines, and Icy Strait Point), the cruise was shortened to four days — leaving only enough time to visit Ketchikan, Alaska on September 20.
Passengers will spend September 21 traveling through Pine Island, Seymour Narrows, and Cape Mudge before returning to Vancouver, British Columbia on September 22, the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.
"The safety of our guests, crew, and communities we visit is our top priority," the spokesperson told Insider. "All itinerary changes have been communicated to guests and travel partners."
Related stories
Insider spoke with and received emails from customers impacted by all three of the cruise disruptions, some of whom had already traveled to Alaska — and spent a good chunk of money in order to get there.
Susan Rahn, a passenger onboard the delayed September 15 cruise, said she actually hoped Royal Caribbean would cancel her cruise after hearing the previous two voyages had been canceled.
"We did not want to fly all the way here from Delaware to be told there's a problem," she wrote in an email sent to Insider on Sunday. "Well … here we are, in Seward, Alaska, sitting in the dock because Royal Caribbean says the weather is too rough and we're better off sitting still."
Radiance of the Seas passengers impacted by the September 15 delay will receive a 50% refund of the cruise fare, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said. The cruise line will refund any pre-paid beverage packages and shore excursions purchased for the ports of call that were missed due to the itinerary change.
Rahn said she and her husband spent approximately $3,000 on travel expenses related to the cruise and have been credited about $484 each. Insider was unable to independently verify these expenses. Customers impacted by the September 1 and September 8 cancellations received a full refund and future cruise credit, a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.
For the September 8 cruise, the cruise line will reimburse transportation costs of up to $250 per guest for domestic travel, or up to $500 per guest for international travel, the spokesperson said. For the September 1 cruise, which was canceled when some passengers had already boarded the ship, the cruise line will reimburse transportation costs of up to $600 per person.
Carol Cutkomp, a passenger who was onboard the ship when the September 1 cruise was canceled, told Insider she's "furious" with the cruise line's compensation package, which she says does not take into consideration the time and money spent traveling to and from Seward.
"We understand the time and effort our guests put into planning their vacation, and we are disappointed that we needed to cancel these sailings, but we look forward to welcoming them on a future vacation," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson previously told Insider.

Royal Caribbean's delayed arrival of ship causes passenger parking challenges at Port Canaveral
A one-day delay of the Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas' return to Port Canaveral created a logistical challenge at the port on Monday that caused some traffic congestion.
The Wonder of the Seas — the world's largest cruise ship — was returning from St. Kitts to Port Canaveral's Cruise Terminal 1 when the captain was forced to turn the ship around and divert to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to get care for a passenger suffering a medical emergency, the cruise industry website Cruise Hive reported.
The Wonder of the Seas was scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral on Sunday, but got there early Monday morning instead.
But the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas also was supposed to arrive at Terminal 1 on the south side of Port Canaveral on Monday.
So the port, working with Royal Caribbean, instead shifted the Independence to Terminal 6 on the north side of the port, while the Wonder of the Seas was at Terminal 1.
That required passengers getting off the Independence at Terminal 6, who had driven to the port before their cruise started, and were ending their cruise on Monday, to catch a free shuttle bus from Terminal 6 to Terminal 1 to pick up their vehicles.

Also, passengers of the Independence who were starting their cruise on Monday and had driven to the port, had to drop off their luggage at Terminal 6, drive to Terminal 1 to park their vehicles, then take a shuttle bus to Terminal 6 to board the ship.
Adding to the logistical issue was that there were three other cruise ships letting off and boarding at Port Canaveral on Monday: the Carnival Liberty at Terminal 3, the Disney Wish at Terminal 8 and the Norwegian Getaway at Terminal 10.
Port Canaveral officials say there were about 50,000 passengers either getting on or off cruise ships there on Monday. Typically, there is about one private vehicle parked at the port for every seven cruise passengers.
Port officials said all five ships departed from Port Canaveral on schedule on Monday afternoon and evening.
Carnival Cruise Line recently had a somewhat similar situation at Port Canaveral, when the Carnival Freedom departed from Terminal 6, but returned to Terminal 3 at the end of its cruise because another ship, the Carnival Magic, was using Terminal 6 on the same day the Freedom returned. Passengers of the Freedom were transported by bus from Terminal 3 to Terminal 6 to get their vehicles.

Royal Caribbean Cancels Alaska Cruise, Guests Must Vacate by Sunday Afternoon
Doug Parker
- April 28, 2024
A Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise was cancelled after guests boarded due to severe technical delays, leaving passengers until Sunday to vacate the ship and find their way home.
Passengers aboard the Radiance of the Seas were previously notified that their departure from Vancouver, British Columbia would be delayed by two days to address a propulsion issue. The original departure date was set for Friday, April 26th, but was postponed until Sunday with a revised itinerary. However, the voyage has now been canceled entirely.
The Alaska cruise was initially delayed for two days
Guests have now been informed the ship will not sail as the technical issue has yet to be resolved. Guests are expected to disembark the ship on Sunday. Despite the initial delay, guests boarded the ship as normal on Friday and were told they would remain in Vancouver while repairs were carried out.
Guests will receive full refunds, travel cost reimbursement
“We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued disruption to your vacation,” it continued. The letter outlined how it would pay guests compensation. Guests will receive a full 100% refund, including taxes, fees, and pre-paid packages. Additionally, guests will also receive a Future Cruise Credit of 100%, which will be issued on May 10.
Those who booked direct flights with Royal Caribbean will have new flights rescheduled automatically. All other guests will have travel change fees reimbursed up to $250 for domestic and $400 for international travel. Any cost overages in a situation like this would be picked up by the passenger’s travel insurance policy .
Following the cancellation notification, guests were notified that they had until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday to vacate the ship.
Radiance of the Seas suffered similar propulsion problems last year, leading to two Alaska cruise cancelations in September 2023. One of these was also notified after guests had already boarded the ship.
Radiance will spend the summer 2024 season sailing Alaska.

Royal Caribbean Postpones Radiance of the Seas Departure
- April 27, 2024
The current cruise of Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas will depart from Vancouver later than scheduled.
Currently kicking off its summer program in Alaska, the 2001-built vessel suffered a technical issue earlier this month .
As a result, the sailing originally scheduled to leave from the Canadian homeport on April 26, 2024, had to be postponed, Royal Caribbean said in statement sent to guests onboard.
According to the letter, the Radiance of the Seas is currently scheduled to sail from Vancouver on April 28, 2024.
“While repairs for the technical issue that we encountered on our previous sailing are still underway, we discovered that we’re going to need some extra time to get the ship in tip-top shape for you,” said Royal Caribbean International.
Although boarding took place as planned on April 26, 2024, the Radiance of the Seas will remain docked in Vancouver through Sunday afternoon.
Due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection restrictions, passengers will not be allowed to leave the ship, the company added.
“We’re terribly sorry for this last-minute change. We understand this news is disappointing, but we hope you’ll enjoy the alternate itinerary planned,” Royal Caribbean said.
Offering a seven-night cruise to Alaska, the Radiance of the Seas is now set to visit Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan.
A previously scheduled visit to Juneau had to be cancelled due to the delayed departure from Vancouver.
To make up for the changes, Royal Caribbean International is providing a refund of two days of the paid cruise fare in the form of onboard credit.
The company is also providing a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) in the value of two days of the paid cruise fare, in addition to complimentary drinks for all guests on April 26 and April 27, 2024.
Passengers with pre-paid shore excursions in Juneau will be refunded, while guests who purchased drink packages will also receive a pro-rated refund.
A similar situation took place earlier this month with a different Royal Caribbean ship in Australia. Also facing technical issues , the Brilliance of the Seas saw one of its cruises depart three days later due to onboard repairs.

Royal Caribbean Forced to Cancel Alaska Sailing With Guests Already Onboard
Here’s something that isn’t a surprise and still is, all rolled into one.
Royal Caribbean International had to cancel a cruise. Not a shock.
What is surprising is that passengers were already on board the Radiance of the Seas. That’s right, instead of going on an Alaskan cruise passengers had to disembark and go home.
The ship was supposed to depart Vancouver on Friday, April 26. There was a maintenance issue on the ship and a revised itinerary was set and it was supposed to depart on Sunday, April 28. But officials couldn’t get it fixed, and now the entire cruise has been canceled.
“Despite our best efforts, circumstances beyond our control have delayed our sailing further,” a letter delivered to guests’ staterooms said. “Your patience throughout this time [has] not gone unnoticed, and we are immensely grateful for your understanding.”
All passengers will not only receive a full refund but will receive a full future cruise credit to sail on Royal Caribbean. The cruise line also made its Wi-Fi free of charge to help passengers better navigate the disembarkation. Other complementary features include an open bar until the ship officially disembarked as well as reimbursement for airline change fees.
The maintenance problem was apparently a propulsion issue.
“While repairs for the technical issue that we encountered on our previous sailing are still underway, we discovered that we’re going to need some extra time to get the ship in tip-top shape for you,” Royal Caribbean wrote in its letter to passengers.
This is the second time the propulsion problem has plagued the Radiance of the Seas.
