American Safari JXL: Jeep Wrangler Extension & Camper System by Red River Rigs

Like many attendees, I’m a big fan of the Jeep Wrangler. I’ve never seen so many JK & JL generation Jeeps converge in a single area as the Overland Expo West in Flagsaff, AZ. Even the parking areas could have been overland Jeep events by themselves.

Inside the event, there was just about everything you could imagine in terms of overland camping gear for Wrangler JK/JL Jeeps. Amongst all the vendors and manufacturers exhibiting at Overland Expo West, there were definitely some standouts being displayed. I felt a rush of adrenaline when I came across Red River Rig’s awesome setup at the event. This was a setup I eagerly wanted to learn more about.

Thankfully Mr. Glen Pratt, President of Red River Rigs out of Amarillo, Texas was present to guide us on an educational tour of his company’s exceptional product, the American Safari JXL system, which is essentially a Jeep extension and camper system. “I originally saw this system in Europe, tested it in the United States and now are selling throughout North America”, states Glen. “We’ve also just begun manufacturing here in the U.S. in the Salt Lake City area”.

The American Safari JXL system is essentially three major components:

• A longer hard top with an integrated pop-up tent
• A 15 inch extension system (creates 50% more space behind the rear seat)
• Different rear bumper options available with a step ladder for easy vehicle entry

The core of the system’s interior is a large bed with a mattress. Part of it slides back to reveal a standing height cooktop, sink that integrates with a wash nozzle and countertop. The extension system has integrated storage on the sides, as well as in it’s floor which is really nice!

Beyond this are 3 general configurations, an open air concept and a couple different configurations with additional storage and functionality for more comfort.

The open air concept is as it sounds – this is base system with no cabinetry on the floor, or interiors sides of the Jeep that are dead space. The floor has comparable room to a mid-size SUV, and with the pop-up tent I can tell you I stood up straight inside with room to spare vertically and I’m just over 6 feet tall.

The middle of the 3 configurations includes hanging storage pockets along the sides of the hard top interior. Also included are 2 storage benches which also act as padded benches for up to 3 people to sit inside around a table top. All of this enables one or a couple to do much within their Jeep camper without having to go outside in cold weather.

The most plush American Safari JXL interior at the event involves half of the back seat being removed, and some really nice custom cabinetry lines both sides. If you have alot of gear, this allows you to get up and out of your living space. There are also integrated storage benches, different level surfaces and a table top, making it nice for moving around interiorly within the Jeep. Lots of organized space.

Of course, Red River Rigs offers completely customized solutions as well, depending on your needs and/or desires.

There are 3 different bumpers sytems as well:

• Stock bumper system with integrated ladder
• A custom steel bumper that attaches to the frame with steel frame extensions. It has the ladder and extended side armor for additional protection
• A modified stock bumper system that includes a customized AEV Wrangler JK rear bumper (has integrated water container, extra armor, etc)

One of the Jeeps on display also had a really cool external rack that mounts low for proper off-road weight distribution. This allows you to attach awnings, tools, lights, etc without interfering with the pop up tent portion of the system.

You can obtain a JXL system in 1 of 3 ways:

• A turnkey solution, where you purchase the complete JK Jeep and camper system already installed from Red River Rigs
• You can send Red River Rigs your Wrangler JK and they can install
• Have the JXL system shipped to you, where you can install it yourself, or have a local shop perform the installation

The system itself is very simple installation, with no cutting or drilling involved – it’s completely bolt-on which is very impressive! It’s removable as well.

At the time of this writing, American Safari JXL systems for the Wrangler JL are just about to be available, as well as a larger roof, thicker mattress option.

Jeep Camper – The Newest Off Road God?

The bolt-on conversion kit for this Jeep Wrangler Camper instantly creates a 4-person sleeping quarter and increases the cargo room by over 50%–but more on this later. Whilst most Wrangler conversion kits hail form Europe, Red River Rigs seeks to “make Wrangler great again” with their American Safari JXL kit. Packing some of the best off-road gear that your after-market dollars can buy, they may just succeed…

The Rugged American Safari JXL Exterior

The main build of this Jeep camper conversion is based around a poly-shell. It bolts seamlessly onto the back of any JK Wrangler Unlimited vehicle, giving you an instant pop-top roof and bed space. It’s surprisingly comfy and spacious, with ample room to lay and look out at the night sky.  

It’s not just luxurious, either. With an air inlet pipe, spare tyre storage, and oversized tyres that eat mountainsides for breakfast, the American JXL goes toe-to-toe with the most rugged adventure busses on the market.

For quality of life, this Jeep Wrangler Camper also comes with extra outboard storage facilities. These include van life essentials such as a towel and dishes rack, and there’s even a place to hang your camper shower .

Jeep Camping: Inside The Wrangler Camper Conversion

If you’re used to off-road busses , Red River Rigs’ Jeep Wrangler Camper might seem a little sparse and Spartan on the inside. However, there’s plenty to appreciate about the American Safari JXL’s simple, no-nonsense approach to off-grid living . (Just think of it as a tiny home on wheels!)

The pop top bed area creates plenty of space to stand up inside, which is arguably the most important mark of a good camper. There’s a beige countertop with an integrated sink, plus a cooker with ample space to put your array of cooking accessories to good use. We also appreciate the extra cargo space, wherein you can store units like the iKamper Eatout to take advantage of good weather.

Sure, the cupboard and table aren’t anything special to look at. But, they definitely get the job done without hogging space. In fact, the table folds away to make space for a lower-level bed which comfortably sleeps two. This is no mean feat, as most high-end luxury campers typically only have room for two van dwellers . (And, unlike the American Safari JXL, they’ll have trouble powering over anything crazier than a speed bump in a Walmart parking lot!)

The American Safari JXL Wrangler Conversion – Final Thoughts

The American Safari JXL takes the best parts of European “mall-crawler” styles like the JK Gazelle, and supercharges them. The result is a surprisingly luxurious package that installs seamlessly onto your 4WD vehicle with ease. When (or if?) you decide to return to domestic life, you can easily remove the conversion package without much hassle.

Compared to the price of an off-road RV , the American Safari JXL is a pretty solid investment–especially if you already own a Wrangler! The base bolt-on roof/body Jeep Wrangler Camper extension kit starts at $17,760. You can tack on another $1,500 if you want the dining furniture package, but you could also look into your own builds to save some cash. A Personal Take

Van-life is all about going with what works for you. If you’ve already got a Jeep and you’re not looking to go out for the longest of long-hauls, this Wrangler conversion is a good option.

For me personally, I’d probably get an off-road trailer for my truck instead. You get a lot more gadgets and power for off-grid living  for your buck, and it’s just going to offer more room.

In the meantime, I’ll keep parking on level ground and going over the odd bump in my Vauxhall Movano, but we certainly wish Red River Rigs the greatest of luck in their future ventures. Check them out for more information on their conversions and to find out more about the American Safari JXL!

The hatch-top safari jeep is  a closed vehicle with a roof hatch to enhance game viewing in the national parks and reserves.   Most ‘experts’ believe this is the most exclusive way to take a Safari by road on a moderate budget . Many mid-range and some up-market operators use these types of safari vehicles to transport clients from place to place. Normally, these safari vehicles are available on a private, one-party basis. For visitors wishing to be alone with family and friends, it is worth double-checking that this is the case in order to avoid disappointment. If you can afford the price, the 4×4 safari cruiser is the ideal vehicle for experiencing  safari.

Africa Safari  Destinations where Hatch-top 4×4 Safari Jeep is used

Closed hatch-top safari jeep are used extensively in Eastern Africa Safari destinations, namely Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya.  It has been argued by many ‘experts’,  that closed Safari vehicles are not the most ideal means of transport for safaris and  wildlife viewing. However,  the use of closed  4WD safari cruisers   in eastern Africa on road based safaris makes a lot of sense as travelers would not want to drive for hours, at speed, along paved highways and on dirt roads  –  in an open vehicle subjected to wind, rain, cold, heat, and dust.  In this regard, the closed hatch-top 4×4 seems like a good choice for safaris in East Africa.

Variations of the Hatch- Top 4WD Safari Land-Cruisers

Within East Africa, the hatch-top safari cruiser comes in 2 variations – the short chassis and the long chassis .  The short chassis from provides excellent stability and flexibility on the rough roads that some parts of Africa have. The short chassis safari cruiser is the modified version of the hard-top toyota with the only changes being the slight arrangement on the seats and the creation of the hatch roof. It has a smaller capacity, being able to take up to 6 persons on safari.     The long chassis safari cruiser is the more popular variation. It is a modification from the pick up truck to an 8-seater safari vehicle.

Further, The 2 Variations Still Come in different forms:  Short Chassis and Long Chassis,  still come in 2 different  types: (1) The Short Chassis Sliding-Window Type (2) The Long Chassis Side-Canvas  Type

(3) The Short Chassis Sliding -Window Type (4) The Long Chassis Side Canvas Type

Sliding Window Hatch-Top  4×4 Landcruisers Tour operators use this type of safari vehicles to transport clients from one park to another, being closed on the sides, they insulate the travelers from the weather elements. They are closed vehicles with a viewing pop-top roof hatches or retractable open that allows you to see outside while standing. These safari vehicles are normally available on a private, one-party basis, and are therefore ideal for those wishing to be alone with family and friends.

Side Canvas Hatch-Top 4wd Landcruiser This type of safari vehicles which have been cleverly modified to have canvas on the side (as opposed to sliding windows).  The canvas can then be rolled up for game viewing , so that it is almost open-sided safari jeep.   The same canvas can be rolled down in the even to rains!  These are very few in comparison with the other types of the safari vehicles. Some a used to transport tourists from one destination to another,  but most are stationed in the safari camps and lodges, only used to pick up guests for the airstrips and for use within the game reserves, parks and conservancies during game drives

The closed Hatch Top Safari Jeep comes in 2 versions –   the short chassis version that  can take up to 4 persons comfortably and the extended or long chassis version that can take up to 8 persons. For the long-chassis  landcruiser even though it has a higher capacity in terms of number of persons,  the recommended number is 6 persons if everybody is to get a window seat

With regard to luggage, it is advisable to pack light when on safari – regardless of the type of safari vehicle in use.  With the 4×4 Landcruisers , there is a small compartment at the back for luggage. If the total number of persons on the trip is between 2 and 4, then all the luggage would fit into this compartment. However, with 6 to 8 persons, depending on the sizes, some of the luggage might have to be placed on the specially designed luggage rack on the roof.  The luggage is then covered by a water-proof canvas for protection against water and (dust) during the drive.

Comfort and Safety of the Safari Jeeps

Just like most  safari vehicles, Land Cruisers of jeeps of whatever type, are equipped with all possible safety features – including  fire extinguishers, First Aid kits, seat belts and some have air bags. They have specially-designed fuel tanks to allow economical use of diesel during long journeys and snorkels for travel through rivers. Protection from the Elements Being a closed safari vehicle, one is assure of relative protection against most types of external danger as well as weather elements like rain, dust and wind.

Photography and Game Viewing With 4×4 Safari Jeeps

Similar to the mini van, game viewing is from the open roof hatch. One chooses either to stand of the floor of the vehicle and pop their head over the open hatch and view animals (or take photos). Alternatively, one could opt to stay seated and view wildlife (and try to take photos) from the slide window or the open space after rolling up the canvas, depending in the type of vehicle in use.

All returns must be accompanied by an original or copy of the receipt within 30 days. There are no refunds/credits after 30 days. Electrical items, tools, installed parts, and some special order items are non-refundable/non-returnable.

All items returned are subject to a minimum 15% restock fee unless other arrangements were made at the time of purchase.

Shipping charges will not be refunded unless item was received damaged or defective, or an error was made on our part when processing your order. Please contact us for any further questions on non-returnable items.

In order to return any products you must contact our customer service at 1-800-341-7757 and obtain an RGA number and write it large and clear on the box being returned. Also care must be taken by you the customer to pack the returned merchandise carefully so that it does not get damaged when sent back to us. Off Road Warehouse is not responsible for any damage that occurs during shipment back to us and the product will become non-returnable if it becomes damaged during the return shipment.

Any customer that receives damaged or defective merchandise should contact Off Road Warehouse immediately and at the latest within 30 days of the Invoice/Purchase date.

These 4 New Jeep Safari 2024 Concepts Run From Retro To Outright Rude

I n Moab, Utah, from March 23 to 31, Jeep is once again holding its Easter Jeep Safari event. Easter has always been the time of year when Jeep shows off whatever wacky concepts it's working on, and the 58th annual event is no different. For this year, Jeep brought out four concepts: the Low Down, the Willys Dispatcher, the High Top, and the Vacationeer. 

Starting from the least crazy, the Willys Dispatcher has the bones of a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and is supposed to call to mind the first generation of Jeeps meant for regular people who weren't in service in the European of Pacific Theaters of World War II. The powertrain is the same: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor that outputs a combined 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. 

The body and aesthetics, however, are a different story. The paint is a color that Jeep is calling Element 115 Green, and the steelie-inspired wheels are 1950s cream-colored. The inside is saddle leather and cloth seats. To further give it a retro look, the headrests were removed because why not? It's a convertible with only the slightest impression of a conventional "roof." A huge embossed "Willys" logo on the hood completes the Jeep's classic vibe.

The Vacationeer And The High Top

Next is the Vacationeer. It's based on the Grand Wagoneer, only with a fairly substantial lift and the obligatory 35-inch tires. It sports a number of skid plates underneath for overlanding aptitude. But the centerpiece is the huge rooftop tent supplied by RedTail Overland, called the Skyloft. The interior temperature is adjustable (because, of course, it is), and can fit up to two people. It's powered by the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six engine that makes 510 horsepower (the same engine that will feature in the upcoming new Dodge Charger), and it's finished in a color called "Spearminted." A rooftop tent on a luxury SUV isn't that unusual, but in this case, the factory roof of the Grand Wagoneer has been removed, making Vacationeer essentially a two-story camping spot.

The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept is fitted with 40-inch tires and an adjustable air suspension system. According to a Jeep press release, it was made to show the Gladiator's off-road credibility. It sports a "Ginger Snap" paint scheme and the tried and true Pentastar 3.6-liter V6.

The Jeep Low Down

Lastly, the Jeep Low Down Concept takes the cake for the most insane Jeep the automaker will show off. It's powered by the soon-to-be departed 392 V8 and is based on the Wrangler Rubicon 392. It has 42-inch tires on 20-inch wheels and is completely absurd, whatever angle you look at it. To make matters weirder, there's a clear cover on the hood so you can see the engine. One other trick is to pick it up at the local freight depot, so you can avoid this charge. These are located in industrial areas, and are usually with 30 minutes for most customers.

Free local pickup or delivery in Phoenix Metro area. Freight Shipping costs $199 to a zoned commercial address. If you want it shipped to your residence, no problem...but consequently, there's a $184 surcharge charged by the freight company.

Roof collapse in Moscow region kills one, 2 others may be under debris - Emergency Situations Ministry

MOSCOW. Dec 17 (Interfax) - Four people have been pulled of the debris at the plant in Dzerzhinsky, Moscow region, where a roof collapsed on Monday morning, the regional branch of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax.

"Five persons have been pulled out, one of them is dead. There might be two more people under the debris," the branch said.
