  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

How Can I Find out If My Tour Bus Is Safe to Ride?

safety tour bus

Sam Diephuis / Blend Images / Getty Images

We have all seen examples of poor driving, unsafe vehicles, and badly-maintained buses. These issues become very important when you are planning to take a motorcoach tour. How can you find out if your tour bus is really safe to ride?

Use the US Passenger Carrier Safety Database

In the United States , the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) monitors interstate bus and truck safety. If you will be traveling on a bus that crosses a state line, you can find out about your chosen tour company or charter bus by visiting the FMCSA's Passenger Carrier Safety page. You can search by company or by vehicle type, but most of us will find it easier to search by company.

For example, if you enter "Greyhound" in the name field, you will be taken to a page that shows your search results. You might see several Greyhound affiliates listed as "Not Allowed to Operate," as well as information about Greyhound Canada Transportation ULC and Greyhound Lines, Inc. Clicking on “Greyhound Lines, Inc.” will take you to the Greyhound data page, where you can review driver and vehicle safety statistics and see performance information by category.

If you cannot find your tour company’s name, you may wish to telephone the company and ask if they contract with a charter company for their motorcoach services. Chances are good that you will be able to find the charter company’s name in the FMCSA safety listings.

While Canada does not have a national passenger carrier safety database, it does make bus safety recall information available to the public. Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database includes recall data for commercial buses. To use this database, you need to know the manufacturers, model names and model years of the buses your tour company uses.

It is difficult to find information about bus passenger safety in Mexico; it does not appear that the Mexican government compiles bus safety information that is searchable by company name or bus manufacturer.

Tip: The FMCSA bus safety listings also include Canadian and Mexican companies if they also operate in the US.

Note:  As of this writing, the FMCSA's Passenger Carrier Safety web page does not work. A note at the top of the page states, "The search capability of this web page is currently not functioning due to technical difficulties. FMCSA is working to repair the problem." This issue has lasted for several months, which makes it difficult to predict when the search function will be restored. As a workaround, you can use the  Department of Transportation's SAFER database  to look up company snapshots, which include at least some information about tour companies and charter bus companies, including basic safety information.

Another Route: Use the SaferBus App to Choose Your Bus Company

The FMCSA has created the free SaferBus app to help Android and iPhone users choose which interstate bus companies they travel with. SaferBus lets you check operating status of a particular bus company registered with the US Department of Transportation, evaluate that company's safety performance and file a safety, service or discrimination complaint against a bus company from your smartphone.

Note:  As of this writing, the SaferBus app is not available in the iTunes store. Reviews on Google Play indicate that the SaferBus app does not work any longer. This may be related to the problems with the FMCSA Passenger Carrier Safety database's search function described above.

Report Unsafe Buses and Drivers to the FMSCA

If you see a bus driver behaving in an unsafe manner, such as texting while driving, or if you notice that a bus has safety issues, you should report the bus or driver to the FMSCA. You can do this by calling 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238) or by filling out a report at the National Consumer Complaint Database website . Of course, if you see a true emergency, you should immediately call 911.

If your US tour bus violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), either because it does not have the required equipment or because that equipment is broken, you can report the bus company to the FMSCA by telephone or online, using the telephone number and website listed above.

Is traveling on a tour bus safe?

safety tour bus

In general, traveling by tour bus can be safe, but there are some things you’ll need to look out for, including the below considerations.

Who doesn’t love to go on vacation? It can be so much fun to travel to a new place and check out the sights. What can make this trip even better is not having to drive or fly — and that’s why many people decide to travel by tour bus.

If you are planning a tour bus trip in Latin America for some time in the future, you may be wondering if it’s safe. No matter how you decide to travel, there are risks involved, and traveling by tour bus is no different.

In general, traveling by tour bus can be safe, but there are some things you’ll need to look out for, including the following considerations.

Compliance with legal requirements Before you embark on your journey, do some online digging to find out if the bus company you choose respects all the legal requirements of the Latin American country you are visiting.

These ensure that the company has the insurance coverage necessary to take care of accident victims if the worst should happen. Tour bus companies are also given a safety rating, which lets you know if you should trust them or not.

Tour bus companies should also keep their buses maintained and serviced to ensure that they run optimally, reducing the chances of a breakdown or accident, and the busses should be equipped with the proper safety gear.

Ask about their drivers All tour bus drivers need to have the right training and a commercial driver’s license that has a passenger endorsement. In addition, the drivers should also have a valid medical certification that says they meet the physical qualifications that are required for the job.

On top of that, it’s also imperative that they have a safe driving record. A reputable tour bus company should be more than willing to provide information about their drivers if you ask for it. If they aren’t, you might want to look for another company to ride with.

Driving hours Not only should the tour bus driver have the right qualifications and certifications, but the tour bus company should also comply with the country’s driving hours if there are any in place. In Latin America, not all countries have provisions that limit the daily driving hours. Also, not all of the countries have provisions for mandatory rest.

In a study that surveyed several countries from South America, researchers found that only 9 had provisions that explicitly limited the daily working hours for drivers. While in some of these countries the limit falls under 10 hours per day, in Mexico, drivers may legally drive up to 14 hours per day.

Should you be going on a trip that lasts for several days in Latin America, make sure you do proper research on the specific countries that interest you. You could ask how many drivers will be on the bus or look over the itinerary to find out how many times you’ll stop so that the driver has ample time to rest and recover.

Your rights and responsibilities Even if the tour bus company you plan your travel with complies with all the rules and regulations, accidents can happen at any time. Before heading out for your vacation, you might consider talking to a lawyer to find out if you are covered if damages resulting from breach of duty occur.

Having this information before you step onto the bus may make it easier to file a claim if something happens. It may also help you determine if getting on the bus at all is worth the risk.

Tour bus safety When it comes to traveling, the only thing you should have to worry about is how much fun you’re going to have. Traveling by tour bus in Latin America can be safe, as long as you find a company that complies with laws and regulations.

You can’t plan for every incident that might occur, but you can arm yourself with knowledge. With the right information, you’ll be able to find the right tour bus company and go on a memorable vacation.

“The essence of the new building, the space that it provides, the interior, parking of the buses, and the maintenance, it is just a huge upgrade for the transit forks here in greater Hazleton,” Caroll explained.

After the ribbon cutting, everyone got a tour of the new facility.

USDOT Finalizes Important National Regulation to Promote Transit Safety and Protect Transit Workers

WASHINGTON – The Biden-Harris Administration will continue its focus on keeping public transportation the safest mode of surface travel, while increasing safety protections for transit workers. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced a final rule updating FTA's Public Transportation Agency Safety Plans (PTASP) regulation , along with a newly revised National Public Transportation Safety Plan . These major safety updates will make transit systems safer for transit workers and passengers nationwide, while providing workers more input in safety-making decisions through enhanced safety committees.

"Millions of Americans depend on safe, reliable public transportation every year, and transit workers deserve to be safe when they’re delivering this essential service," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg . "These improved safety measures will enhance the safety of public transportation by empowering transit agencies and workers to identify risks, find solutions to mitigate those risks, and ensure the solutions are properly carried out."

The new rule and revised safety plan are the result of months of work by Biden-Harris Administration leaders and in response to dozens of comments filed by stakeholders, including transit agencies.

"The safe operation of public transit is FTA's top priority," said FTA Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool . "Today's updates to the National Safety Plan and PTASP regulation reflect our continued commitment, in cooperation with our state and industry partners, that every rider of public transit has a safe and reliable transportation experience."

Public Transportation Agency Safety Plans Update

In the first major update to the PTASP regulation , FTA is increasing frontline transit worker involvement in safety, strengthening communication between frontline transit workers and transit agency management, and requiring the industry to use data to identify and manage safety risk.

The changes apply to more than 700 transit agencies nationwide, including requirements for transit agencies serving areas with a population of 200,000 or more that largely coincide with the most significant increases in reported assaults on transit workers.

Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, impacted transit agencies are required to establish safety committees with equal numbers of frontline transit worker and management representatives to address safety issues. The updated PTASP regulation includes specific requirements for safety committee membership, procedures, and responsibilities to provide frontline workers more input into safety decision-making.

A safety committee can recommend safety improvement strategies based on the agency’s safety risk reduction program. If approved as part of the larger agency safety plan, transit agencies are required to implement the safety risk mitigations. This includes preventing assaults on transit workers and vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

The new rule also requires safety performance targets be set by agencies.

All applicable transit agencies are also required to incorporate de-escalation training for frontline transit workers and minimize exposure to infectious diseases, consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or a state health authority.

The updated regulation also incorporates the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law requirement that transit agencies serving areas with a population of less than 200,000 develop their safety plans in cooperation with frontline transit worker representatives.

National Safety Plan

Reauthorized under President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in November 2021, the National Safety Plan creates a blueprint for transit agencies to adopt stronger safety practices, including mandatory performance measures for transit agencies subject to the PTASP regulation to address assaults on transit workers.

The updated safety plan also includes best practices, tools, technical assistance, voluntary standards, and other resources for transit agencies to improve their safety performance related to major events, collisions, and injuries. The plan also incorporates Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provisions for risk-based approaches to reducing injuries and fatalities on transit systems.

The updated plan supports the Department's goal of making our transportation systems safer for all, which supports the vision outlined in the National Roadway Safety Strategy . It also builds upon FTA's Bus-to-Person Collision Safety Advisory , which calls on transit agencies to assess this safety concern and consider strategies to reduce these types of collisions that accounted for 15 percent of all transit fatalities between 2008-2021, as reported to the National Transit Database.

The updated National Safety Plan includes 22 performance measures, including eight measures for safety risk reduction programs. Joint labor-management safety committees will now use these measures to set risk reduction performance targets focused on reducing the number and rates of accidents, injuries, and assaults on transit workers.

FTA will continue to provide technical assistance to transit agencies regarding the PTASP regulation and National Safety Plan. Sign up for email alerts to receive the latest PTASP and National Safety Plan updates.
