In honor of those who died when Supertyphoon Yolanda (international name: Typhoon Haiyan) struck Tacloban City in 2013, a memorial was constructed near the Tacloban City Convention Center. The bridge began construction in 2006 so vehicles could avoid a mountainous section of Agas-Agas that was prone to landslides during the rainy season. It was eventually finished in 2009. 

Two years later, a zipline facility was opened by the bridge to provide a fun experience for tourists. The twin zipline measured up to 880 meters from above the bridge to the riverbank below, making it one of the longest ziplines in the Philippines. 19. Mahagnao Volcano National Park

Mahagnao Volcano National Park is one of the protected tourist spots in Leyte. It has been under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) since 1997.

The park boasts of a dormant volcano, a freshwater, and an acidic lake, cascading waterfalls, and therapeutic hot springs. It also harbors rich biodiversity.

20. Karap-agan Falls/ Mahayahay Falls

Karap-agan Falls/ Mahayahay Falls cascades amidst stunning green foliage, giving it an enchanting view. It is a two-tier waterfall, with a naturally-built pool on each cascade.

You can jump or dive into these pools and have a rejuvenating swim. From the first cascade, you can climb your way to the second waterfall. Sit on its base as you relish the mists caressing you.

21. limasawa island.

Limasawa is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Southern Leyte. It is where the first Christian mass in Asia was held, sparking the growth of Christianity in the Philippines.

But there is more to that. The island boasts of stunning beaches with rock formations where you can dive towards the turquoise waters of the sea. You can go snorkeling or swimming all day long with the locals and the marine species.

23. Panaon Island

You can hire boats to catch sight of these. The island is connected to mainland Southern Leyte via Wa-Wa Bridge.

Samar Province is located on Samar Island in Eastern Visayas Region, Philippines. It’s nestled in the middle of Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Leyte Gulf. Catbalogan City is the provincial capital of Samar Province. San Juanico Bridge connects it to the Province of Leyte.

The province is rich in marine and agricultural resources and it’s the primary source of income for the locals. It has the most extensive cave system in the country which makes it the ‘Caving Capital of the Philippines.

Visit Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park

Some of the caves in Samar Province can be found in this National Park, like Panhulugan Cave. A 15-minute kayak leisure ride can take you to some limestone cliffs, rock formations, and virgin forests. You also get to see the natural bridge if you take this ride. They call this a ‘hidden and secret paradise.’

Go on Torpedo Boat Adventure Ride in the Ulot River

The TORPEDO Boat Extreme Ride goes through 10.5 kilometers of rapid. You’ll ride a boat that can take the intense rapids of that river. The end of the destination is Deni’s Point which has cool waters and boulders where you and your friends can have a picnic. Some visitors jump into the water from the boulders for a more exciting adventure.

Discover Langun-Gobingob Cave System

The town of Calbiga is the cradle of this amazing underground system, the largest karst in the Philippines. The cave system comprises Langun, Gobingob, Bitong Mahangin, and Lurodpon. The same cave system is one of the biggest in Asia. That’s why caving enthusiasts should go there when in Samar.

Visit Calbayog City Beaches

Calbayog is located in Samar Province, and the city is beaming with marine life. Aside from having a stunning beach, it’s also where the Samar Archeological Museum is. The museum houses many burial jars, artifacts, Chinese porcelains, religious pieces, and log coffins with skeletal remains.

Experience the Boat Ride to Marabut Rock Formation

You can see many limestone rock formations when you set out for this marine park. The limestone formations are out on the sea, so they look like they’re floating, which makes a fantastic contrast with the blue sky. It’s located at San Pedro Bay, which they say has calm waters.

Additionally, you can check out the 16 th Century Lighthouse of San Pedro Bay, which sits on an islet and is visited by many birds.

Swim in Lulugayan Falls

Swim in the natural pools or walk on the banks and the waterfalls when you visit Lulugayan Falls. There are cottages in the area where you can admire the beauty of the place. The uniqueness of the falls comes from its cascading waters that look like a pretty curtain from afar and the sky and some trees as backdrops.

Visit Pinipisakan Falls

If Lulugayan Falls features a curtain-like appearance, Pinipisakan Falls is different because it features two tiers in a magical position. You’ll know you’re in paradise when you see those tiers. The water is pale green, and there’s a cave by the falls. This is a good place for swimming, but more importantly, it’s the best place to take photos for your Instagram.

The cottage industry of Basey is where you will find the Tikog Mats or Banig and learn about them. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the craft. You will be taken to the Saob Cave, where they let the tikog grass become sturdy because the cave’s environment is appropriate for the grass. You will see how it is prepared and the end product, which is colorful and durable.

Try the Foods of Samar

Samar Province offers many delectable dishes to try when you go there. Some of their must-try dishes are Lelang, a native pork dish with shrimps, sotanghon, and togue. Another dish in Samar that you should try is its Tamalos which they say is the local version of Tamales.

The native sweets of the province include Salukara, which resembles a pancake and uses tuba (young coconut wine) as a rising agent. Another one is Tambis-tambis or sweet coconut shreds that’s been deep-fried and have white sugar topping. You also must try their ‘Kesong Puti’, one of the province’s best sellers.

Watch Festivals

The province hosts many festivals and events like the Manaragat in Catbalogan, which is held every August and honors the patron saint of the city, St. Bartholomew.

The Hadang in Calbayog is also a must-see festival. It’s an event where there is a colorful parade, and people wear rooster costumes as a ritual to worship their gods.

There’s also the Carabao (Gandara) Festival which celebrates the ‘farm beast of burden’ for their precious carabao milk, which they used for their kesiyo (kesong puti).

The last one is the Kawayan-Banigan, held every September 28, focusing on the province’s bamboo and mat weaving livelihood. The celebration also showcases various street dances, parades, and exhibits.

Swimming, kayaking and canoeing are also fun things to do. There is also a viewing deck from atop to witness the beauty of the entire lake surrounded with mountain ranges.

It is a $21.9 Million bridge constructed within 4 years as a gift of Ferdinand Marcos (10th President of the Philippines) to his wife Imelda Marcos. The bridge connects Samar and Leyte Provinces with a length of 2.16 kilometers. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum , one of 29 presidential rest houses Marcos Family had built and almost all dedicated to his wife Imelda Marcos. A chapel dedicated to Sto. Niño is the one that dominates the ground floor. It has 13 guest rooms with different motifs and magnificent designs and decorations. A ballroom, conference room and bed chambers for the first family can be found on the second floor. The inside of the museum is full of expensive or priceless paintings, antique ceramics, pottery, dioramas, religious relics and sculptures. This is a recommended destination in Leyte, don’t miss to witness a part of its history.

MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park commemorates the fulfillment of General MacArthur’s promise, “ I shall return ” at the Red Beach in Leyte. The center of attention in the park is the 7 double-life-sized bronze statues of MacArthur and his entourage including Former President Sergio Osmenia (3rd President of the Philippines) designed by the sculptor Anastacio Caedo based on the iconic photo of Gaetano Faillace. This is the historic landing site of General MacArthur which marks the start of the campaign to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation which led to the largest naval battle of World War II that took 3 years before Japan’s defeat.

Leyte is renowned for its historical importance, especially for its involvement in World War II. The Battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the greatest naval confrontations in history, took place on the island and was a pivotal turning point in the war in the Pacific.

HISTORY OF LEYTE

Leyte’s initial capital was Carigara, followed by Palo, Tanauan, and eventually Tacloban. On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur and President Sergio Osmena arrived with American forces at Palo, Leyte to begin the liberation of the Philippines from the Japanese Imperial Army.

On March 29, 1521, Rajah Kolambu and Magellan signed the first known blood contract on the island of Limasawa, Leyte, after Magellan set ship from Homonhon, Samar. The Spanish explorer Ruy Lopez de Villalobos gave Leyte the name “Felipina” in honor of King Philip of Spain in February 1543. The name was thereafter given to the entire archipelago. Leyte was the victim of separate raids by Muslim Sultans, Pagdalanum Buhiran and Kudarat, and Suluans. It was given political and military authority in 1735, and Samar came under its control. In 1768, Samar and Leyte were separated.

FESTIVALS IN LEYTE

• Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival This event, which is held on June 29 every year, is a vibrant display of Leyte’s culture and history. The Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival honors the aboriginal warriors of the region and their body tattoos with street dances, cultural performances, and parades. The festival features three main events: the Subiran Regatta , a sailboat race held at the San Juanico Strait’s eastern entrance, Balyuan, a pageant reenacting the historic exchange of images between Basey, Samar, and Tacloban City, and the Pintados Festival, in which participants paint their bodies and dance to the beat of bamboo sticks.
• Buyogan Festival This celebration takes place in the town of Abuyog every August. The Buyogan Festival celebrates the town’s bountiful crops and honeybees by showcasing lively street dances, parade floats, and cultural activities. The Buyogan procession, which is attended by a number of groups, is the festival’s main attraction. Participants don a variety of vibrant costumes that are modeled after the varied forms and hues of bee life. Children depict a miniature beehive with buzzing small bees within. To represent the town’s ethnic background, other participants paint and henna tattoo tribal motifs on their faces and bodies.
• Sangyaw Festival The Sangyaw Festival, which takes place in Tacloban City every June 29th, is a significant celebration of the culture and history of the city. The event includes vibrant street dances, cultural performances, and parades that highlight the history, customs, and landmarks of the city.
• Abuyog-Tolosa Danao Festival This celebration brings together the three Leyte towns of Abuyog, Tolosa, and Danao every September. With street dances, parades, and other cultural events, the celebration highlights the unique traditions and history of each town.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT LEYTE

The province experiences two distinct seasons in its tropical climate: the dry season, which lasts from November to May. The dry season is the ideal time to visit Leyte if you want to engage in outdoor activities like beach hopping, hiking, or exploring the region’s natural attractions.

How to get around Samar Island

1.By Habal-Habal or known as Motorcycle

Good for couples. It is much better if you can drive it yourself.

It can accommodate up to 10-13 passengers . If you want to rent tour the island using the van, it will cost you around Php 2000-2500 or $40-50 per day .

3. By Multi-Cab

• The name of the attraction is taken from the San Juanico strait, where the San Juanico Bridge is located. San Juanico Bridge is the Philippines’ longest bridge, measuring approximately 2.16 kilometers in length, and connects two major islands, Samar and Leyte. The municipality of Sta. Cruz is located on the other side of the bridge, namely on the Samar side. Rita can be found.

• Balantak Falls is located in Rawis, a barangay next to Sohoton. This waterfall is made up of three water falls. You may also hike to the falls. Its chilly and flowing waters are ideal for soothing and massaging fatigued muscles. Going to Balance Falls takes time, but when you see the water falls, you will realize that it was well worth the effort. You can also ride a habal-habal to Balantak.

• Saob Cave in Basey, Samar, was formerly home to hundreds of banig weavers, known as paraglara in the local dialect. 10. Caving at Langun-Gobingob Cave

Langun-Gobingob Cave has the greatest karst in the Philippines, and the cave system is one of the largest in Asia. However, it is only recently that both local and foreign visitors have begun to visit the aforementioned cave.

Lulugayan Falls, often known as the Philippines’ “Mini-Niagara Falls,” is one of Samar’s most famous tourist attractions. It looks like a massive curtain flowing over a window.

The waterfall is also surrounded by dense jungles. Its crystal-clear waves excavated deep pockets of the pool where you may relax and swim. Climb one of the boulders and leap into the pool’s deepest area.

But be sure you know how to swim. In the meanwhile, there are cabins where you may picnic and prepare your meals.

The Marabut Marine Park in San Pedro Bay is home to various limestone rock formations, some of which tower more than 30 meters high and have their own vegetation.

In contrast to the blue water, they resemble floating islands. If you’re an experienced diver and swimmer, you can attempt jumping from one of them. When you’re done with them, you may go to a 16th-century lighthouse on an islet.

17. Sightseeing at Biri Island Rock Formation

Biri Island Rock Formation is more than only its beautiful beaches and lovely bathing waters. It also has massive rock formations known locally as Magasang, Bel-at, Macadlaw, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and Puhunan.

Because of the massive size of the rocks, the island is also known as the “battleground of the gods,” and it offers tourist activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing.

Onay/Unay Beach is located on the northeastern coast of Northern Samar and is one of the more remote tourist destinations. Enjoy trailing on the golden beach sand while staring out at the sea’s beautiful and quiet ocean.

Two enormous boulders may be seen on one end of the beach. You may leap from one of them into a deep portion of the water for an exciting experience. Simply ensure that you know how to swim.

Makati Island is known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear seas. The beach is lined by coconut palms. Makati Island, like many other islands in Eastern Samar, is less touristic, making it ideal for people seeking a rural escape.

Minasangay Marine Eco-Park is one of Eastern Samar’s burgeoning tourism destinations. Locals and international visitors alike enjoy the verdant woods, coconut plantations, mangrove forests, and rock formations on the shore.

The Philippines’ biggest contiguous stretch of old-growth rainforest is found at Samar Island National Park. The park, which spans over 333,300 hectares, is home to unique and endangered species, making it a biological hotspot.

Some of Samar’s most renowned sites, such as the Sohotan Natural Bridge National Park, are also included in the park. Much of the park has been logged over time.

Fortunately, more community-based initiatives are emerging to safeguard the park while advocating for community-based development through ecotourism.

34. Swim at Belat Pool

37. Little Palawan or Kandiwata island

Kandiwata Rock Formation, or Kandiwata, is a rock formation in the municipality of Daram, Samar Province, Philippines.

This tourist attraction is known as Samar’s “Small Palawan” because it features rock formations that will transport you to Palawan. Some people say it was named Kandiwata after the deities and spirits that formerly lived there.

Maupay nga Adlaw! (meaning “Good Day” for the people of Samar, Philippines)

The Philippines is one of the world’s most traveled tourist destination in the world. With a lot of natural resources and scenic views in the country, foreigners cannot just resist the temptation of going to this country. One of the places that which has these characteristics is the Northern Samar of Samar Island. Though not yet that too well-known to tourists, this place will undoubtedly be one of the future gems of the country in the aspect of tourism. Whatever is your preferred destination, beach, waterfalls, and rock formations, this place got it all for you!

Samar is divided into three provinces: Samar province, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar. These three provinces, along with the provinces on the nearby islands of Leyte and Biliran are part of the Eastern Visayas region. It is the fourth largest island in the Philippines after Luzon, Mindanao, and Negros.

Going to Samar is quite challenging especially if you are coming from Negros. You will have the option to take the land trip to Cebu and from Cebu to Samar. The land trip from Negros Occidental to Samar would take you the whole day.  Oh well, if you are not in a hurry this can also be fun. But not for me this time. I have to be on the Island at the shortest possible time and I should not be exhausting my physical power so I will be able to run the three- day training in “Personal Effectiveness” for the staff of the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation effectively.    to take the Bacolod to Manila route…stay overnight in Manila and fly to Samar, Catarman the following day.

I wasn’t expecting much from the Island … so I wasn’t surprised when I reached the Catarman.

Catarman the Capital of Northern Samar

Catarman is the capital and largest town in terms of both area and population in the province of Northern Samar. The town lies on the northern part of Samar Island and southeast of the Philippine capital, Manila. It is bounded to the east by Mondragon, to the west by Bobon, to the south by Lope de Vega, and to the north by the San Bernardino Strait. At present, there are 55 barangays, 22 of them in the Poblacion .

Before the coming of the Spaniards, it is said that  Catarman was called Ibabao and was part of the extensive Maguindanao Kingdom, which extended from Mindanao to Bicol. Ibabao extended from the southernmost tip of Samar Island to the territories close to Bobon in the northernmost part of the island. The Spanish Conquistadores freely applied the name Ibabao to the island when it established its civil government. The similarities in the vocabularies and pronunciation of the dialects of these areas trace them to a common root as people. The word Catarman is derived from the Turkish word attar (oil of the roses) and inman (holy men).

The town was one of the pueblos established by the Spaniards in Samar Island and was one of the settlements in the northern parts of the island. The pueblo was named Calatman and was one of the pueblos in the Samar and Leyte islands, then collectively referred to as Islas de Pintados.

Catarman is home to the University of Eastern Philippines.

Going around Catarman proper are mostly done through pedicab or simply by walking. I enjoyed walking a lot after all Catarman proper is just very small. One funny experience I had was when I was invited by Ms. Tess Nunez, Training Manager of NWTF to dine outside for my last stay in Catarman (the hotel we stayed has no restaurant). Of course, one pedicab cannot accommodate both of us. So we took one pedicab each. The native bar and restaurant ‘Tsiban” is one of the best places in Catarman, but from the hotel that we stayed, we still have to cross a bridge which was quite steep for a pedicab. The driver of the pedicab I took was tagging along with him her girlfriend. In the middle of the bridge, I can hear the struggling breath of the driver. I heard him telling her girlfriend to get down and push the pedicab. How I wish someone was taking our pictures at that time. The scene was ridiculously humorous.

For travelers, Catarman offered quite a number of Pension Houses. The room rates range from 1,000 to 1,500/room. Catarman is basically simple and Laidback. There are a number of places which one can visit during night time. But I was surprised, food in the restaurants are priced high a bit.

Of course in any trip, food is always a big factor, so the staff of Negros Women for Tomorrow’s Foundation offered to cook dinner for us. Fish like fresh tuna is quite reasonable at PhP 160/kilo in the wet market.

For the first-timer like me, I was looking for a place to buy some souvenirs that I can bring home. There was none. So with my camera, I went around Catarman proper and took some pictures of the place.

 Northern Samar Tourist Spots

Located in Sila Island, this beach will be one of your favorites. Admit it, either men or women will surely fall in love with this place! Who wouldn’t be right? This is one of the best beaches in the country due to its unique pink color of the sand. This is due to the fragments of red corals and different shells mixed with the white sand, making it color pink in appearance most especially when the rays of the sun touch the shore. Thus, making it a picturesque place for your summer Instagram posts. Another factor why this place is loved by many is the fact that the emerald-colored water is rich with corals and fishes. You may also give swimming and snorkeling a try to fully enjoy the experience. Either you stay for the day or overnight through camping, the choice is up to you.

Dalupiri Island

The tropical atmosphere manifested by the long stretched of white sand with planted palms on the side makes this place famous. The availability of accommodations is also one of the factors why tourists love the place, well, they are just located in front of the beach itself making it ideal for instant swimming and snorkeling sessions. On the other side of the island is the part where tourists could witness how gifted the place is regarding marine resources. Reaching this place will only take you a 30-minute boat ride from the Victorina town.

Located on the North-eastern Coast of Northern Samar, this beach is famous for its golden sand beach color. Stretching up to the total length of one kilometer, tourists will surely enjoy walking on the shore while watching the serene and calm water as well as lush shrubbery. On the end part of the beach on the South part lies the two massive rocks which serve as diving platforms for the tourists. Though the place is said to be haunted in some ways due to a folktale that did not stop the visitors from traveling to this beautiful place.

Batag Island Lighthouse

The 101-foot lighthouse in the Island of Batag built during the American Occupation back in the year 1907 is one of the top historical places of the entire province of Samar. This was originally built to direct the passing vessels towards the San Bernandino passage. But today, this place offers an amazing experience for the tourists to see the place in an amazing and exquisite way. Once you are there, you can have a panoramic view of the wide agricultural land, coconut trees, coastlines, mountains, and the passage of San Bernandino. Well, aside from the historical aspect of this place, the scenic view it offers will surely entice the tourists to pay a visit.

Biri Island Rock Formation

Traveling to this place from the mainland will take you a total of a 20-minutes boat ride. But no need to feel discouraged because the beauty of the place will be worth it. Once you land to the island, the first thing that will catch your attention will be the seven gigantic rock formations which the locals named Bel-at, Caranas, Macadlaw, Magasang, Magsapad, Pinanahawan, and the Puhunan. The place also got the title of “battle of the gods” attributing to the formation of such humongous rocks, though these are formed through the tectonic plate movements. The site is also perfect for those who are water sports enthusiasts (snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing) because of the strong winds and intense water waves.

Capul Lighthouse

The Capul lighthouse was built way back in the year 1896; this served as a guide to different ships and vessels crossing the San Bernardino. This also contributed to the well-known Acapulco-Manila galleon trade. Though you will have to take a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland to go to this island where it is located, the scene awaiting you is so stunning. There is an available viewing area sharing the view of the coastline, crashing waves, San Bernandino passage, mountains, and the Mt.Bulusan of Sorsogon.

Capul Church

The Church of San Ignacio de Loyola or also known as Capul Church was declared as a National Culture Treasure. Why? Aside from the fact that it is already 400 years old, it has been a haven for many Spanish in protecting the town from the Moro pirates. Despite their efforts, the Church was destroyed and needed to undergo two reconstructions to restore it with walls along with a 36-foot bell tower on its side (left). Visit this historic site and be mesmerized on how such Church tested by tremendous challenges stood the test of time.

Laoang Church

The Saint Michael the Archangel Parish or also called Laoang Church is just situated in the center of the town. Built during the 18th century, by Franciscan friars who made Catholicism well-known to the locals. Thus, converting them into Catholics. The antique feature of its facade made it perfect to put the statues of different saints and angels, Saint Paul and Saint Peter, Saint Michael the Archangel, and Virgin Mary to name a few. To further defend the Church from the Moro pirates, the Almuraya Fortress Ruins (wall) was used as a defense system.

Busay Falls

Busay Falls is one of the top tourist spots in the Northern part of Samar. Located in San Isidro, this falls is 2 kilometers away from the actual town. The water coming from the falls pours down to the two huge vertical walls of rock formation going to the bottomless plunge pool. For the adventurous visitors, they may also choose the flat stone spot near the falls to do their cliff-diving. Covered with greeneries and natural beauty of the place, tourists are fond of going here for swimming as well as cliff jumping.

Veriato Falls

The water is coming from the 30-meters high rock slope going down to a vast natural pool which makes it perfect for those who would like to spend their vacations on varied swimming activities. The deepest part of the natural pool is 10 feet, a place where most of the adventurous adults stay. The rock formation on the side part serves as a picnic place for the tourists making it convenient to visit and stay even in the summer season.

How to get to Northern Samar

By Air You can reach Northern Samar by Air depending on where you wanted to stay. Three airports are servicing Samar: Catarman, Calbayog, and Tacloban.

By Land If plane tickets are too expensive and you are on a budget, you can opt for a bus. From Manila, you can take a bus from Pasay or Cubao bound for Catarman/Rawis or Tacloban. Travel time may take 15-18 hours. You can take local buses or Jeepneys going to your destination.

Love the idea of returning sometime to Catarman, Samar. I spent several years there with my family and went to St. Michael College. I probably would meet old friends. I still remember when the streets were unpaved and covered with the finest sand. I ride my bike with some friends to Tamburusan, one of the beaches there. I have happy memories of this place!

10 Epic Natural Attractions on Samar Island, From Wild Caves to Azure Seas

Tell us: Is Samar Island on your bucket list? The island — consisting of the provinces Samar , Eastern Samar , and Northern Samar — remains largely out of the tourist radar. But that’s exactly why we love it! True off-grid adventures are hard to find nowadays, but this island in Eastern Visayas promises to take explorers off the beaten path. 

From pink beaches in secluded islands to ancient rock formations on the coast, Samar is an underrated destination teeming with natural gems. Plus, most are enticingly empty. Read on for our roundup of the best adventures and natural attractions on Samar Island.

Best adventurous things to do in Samar

1. biri island rock formations – biri island, northern samar.

Nestled on the northernmost tip of Visayas , Biri Island is a remote rural destination. Expect basic accommodations, bumpy habal-habal rides, and a long journey of hours on the road and an hour-long boat ride. But trust us, the natural beauty of Biri Island makes up for the lack of luxury amenities. 

No doubt about it, Biri Rock Formations is nothing short of spectacular. In person, it’s impossible not to be awed by the six mammoth rock formations carved by the powerful Pacific Ocean over the past millions of years. On one side is the Pacific; on the other, travellers can swim in natural pools protected from the waves by the ancient rocks.

2. Sohoton Caves & Natural Bridge Park – Basey, Samar

Deep in the Samar Island Natural Park is the Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge Park . Home to jungles, limestone crags, ravines, caves, rivers, and a natural stone bridge, the 840-hectare protected natural area is one of the island’s most stunning natural gems. A kayak ride will take you to the park’s main attractions, including the main chamber of Sohoton Cave and the famous Natural Bridge . 

3. Calicoan Island – Guiuan, Eastern Samar

Everyone knows about Siargao , but wave-hunters roaming the archipelago should also make a detour to Calicoan Island . A quiet tropical paradise facing the Pacific Ocean, the island is a great place to ride waves (or learn how to) with uncrowded waters and a steady reef break. Surfers and surf instructors are typically found at Calicoan Beach . Not planning to paddle out? Swimming in Calicoan Villa ’s outdoor pool over the ocean is a relaxing alternative.  

Although it’s the most popular surf spot on the island, Calicoan isn’t the only place in Samar to get stoked on ride-worthy waves. Surfers can also enjoy great breaks along Baybay Boulevard in Borongan City .

4. Minasangay Marine Ecological Park – Balangkayan, Eastern Samar

Next, travel to one of the most stunning natural attractions in Eastern Samar : Minasangay Marine Ecological Park . Travel time is quite long; it takes about one to six hours to get to this off-the-beaten-track park. But if you’re like us, you won’t mind travelling for hours to swim in some of the bluest waters you could ever imagine!

Breathtakingly clear lagoons, thriving marine life, and lush mangroves; truly, it’s an unspoiled idyll hiding on Samar shores! Diving boards give cliff-jumpers opportunities to test their mettle from varying heights, while cottages offer travellers a place to rest if they want to stay overnight. Pictures hardly do Minasangay Marine Ecological Park any justice — we guess you’ll have to see it in person to believe it.  

A similar Eastern Samar attraction is Apiton Island in San Policarpo , blessed with a picturesque landscape of startlingly blue lagoons and huge rock formations.

5. Pink Beach – Sila Island, Northern Samar

When talking about the most stunning natural attractions on Samar Island, we can’t skip the beaches! It’s the third-largest island in the Philippines, after all. So, the island is bound to deliver its fair share of pristine shores, right? 

Let’s start with one of our favourites: Pink Beach . That’s right; you don’t have to fly to the Bahamas to experience the joys of playing on candy-coloured shores. Floating off the coast of San Vicente is Sila Island , where crushed corals and seashells have mixed with white sands to create a pinkish hue. 

The colour isn’t as noticeable on cloudier days, but when the sun is out, make sure you’re ready with your camera. Pink beaches may not be as big of a draw as Boracay-like white shores, but trust us when we say they can be just as mesmerising. Besides, pink-hued sands are even more eye-catching on the ’Gram!

6. Acapulco Beach – Capul Island, Northern Samar

Acapulco in off-grid Samar? It’s true: There’s a white-sand Acapulco Beach tucked away in one of the isles of Northern Samar. Sure, it’s not quite as picturesque as the iconic Mexican beach town. But with turquoise waters, gently swaying palms, and beautiful sunsets, Acapulco Beach sets the stage for a blissful beach vacation in the province. Plus, it’s only one of the many beautiful beaches on Capul Island . Abak Beach is even more renowned for its powder-fine white sand and crystal-clear blue waters. 

7. Langun-Gobingob Cave System – Calbiga, Samar

If you enjoy exploring caves, the Langun-Gobingob Cave System should be one of the attractions in Samar in your itinerary. Also known as Calbiga Caves , it’s the largest cave system in the Philippines and the second-largest cathedral cave in the world — and this protected area sits hidden in the humble town of Calbiga ! 

Twelve massive chambers lie in the seven-kilometre cave network; each is bigger than the last, with a few of them towering as high as buildings. Stalactites as big as tiny houses hang from cave ceilings, while occasional rustling hints at life thriving in the chambers. Bats, snakes, and other wildlife stay out of sight, but you’ll probably catch a glimpse of a few as you make your way through the caves. Parts of the cave system are astonishingly lush, with moss and flora painting the jagged rocks green. For nature lovers, Langun-Gobingob is definitely a must-see.

8. Ulot River – Paranas, Samar

Natural wonders truly never end on this island; from caves to beaches, and now we’re off to lush tropical rivers. Found within Samar Island Natural Park, Ulot River winds 90 kilometres from San Jose de Buan in Samar Province to Can Avid in Eastern Samar. 

We recommend going through Paranas , the jump-off point for the thrilling Torpedo Boat Extreme Ride . Zip through the white water, dodge boulders, and let the wild rapids carry you through — it’s definitely one of the most exciting attractions in Samar! Ulot is the Waray word for monkeys, so keep your eyes peeled for cheeky monkeys peeking out from the unspoiled forest.

9. Bangon & Tarangban Falls – Calbayog, Samar

Looking to chase waterfalls? If so, you’ll have a lot of natural attractions on Samar Island to choose from. When you’re anywhere near Calbayog City , there are two beautiful cascades worth visiting: Bangon and Tarangban Falls . 

A mild trek through a verdant jungle will take you to the small Bangon Falls that’s a picturesque spot for a refreshing dip. Then, go on to the bigger and wider Tarangban Falls. If you’re steady on your feet, climb to the top for a sweeping view of the jungle vista. 

10. Pinipisakan Falls – San Jorge, Samar

Finally, a trip to the secluded Pinipisakan Falls is a must when you’re exploring natural attractions on Samar Island. It’s often called one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines, a four-tiered marvel framed by wild ferns, huge boulders, and untouched jungle that lends it an enchanting Avatar-like allure. Top off the trip with a visit to the nearby Sulpan Cave . 

Another plus about visiting Pinipisakan Falls: Tourists are scarce, even more so than other Samar attractions. After all, it’s a long and often tiring journey to get here: hours on the road, an upstream canoe ride, and a two-hour (or more) jungle trek. But then again, that’s a price we’re more than willing to pay to bask in the otherworldly beauty of Pinipisakan!

Truthfully, these are only a fraction of the stunning natural attractions on Samar Island. Beaches, waterfalls, caves, and forests — more of each are scattered and hidden away on this underrated Visayan island. The Splendid Province of Samar

The province of Samar is a rugged land with bountiful waters on the west and low mountain ranges on the east. Caught between mountain and sea, Samar is no stranger to rain, which it experiences in varying degrees for the most part of the year.

Samar, formerly and also known as Western Samar, is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is Catbalogan City and covers the western portion of Samar Island as well as several islands in the Samar Sea located to the west of the mainland. Catbalogan City and Calbayog City , two of the three cities on Samar Island, are located in the province of Samar. The province is bordered by Northern Samar and Eastern Samar. Samar is connected to the island and province of Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge , which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the country. To the south is the Leyte Gulf.

Samar is blessed with a lush rainforest harboring tropical flora and fauna, crossed by multiple navigable rivers, and pocked by mysterious caverns and refreshing waterfalls. A tourist wanting something out of the ordinary may experience all these wonders of nature and still only be a few hours from civilization.

Tourist Attractions

GUINOGO-AN CAVE

Location: Situated at the fringes of Barangay Longsob, Oquendo District, Calbayog City. Thirty (30) minute ride to Cabugawan and 50-minute hike to Lungsod Cave.

Description: Its large entrance leads one to a natural tunnel with uneven ceiling, some portions touching one’s head giving the adventurer an eerie trip through dark, cool interior.

MAPASO HOT SPRING

Location: Barangay Rizal II, Oquendo District, Calbayog City. Thirty (30) minute ride to Oquendo from Calbayog plus 15-minute hike to the Spring.

Description: As the name suggests, ‘mapaso’ literally means hot. Fresh crustacean (pokot) abounds. They are naturally pinkish resembling scalded shrimps due to the high temperature.

MAWACAT SLIDE

Location: A 35-minute ride from Oquendo District, Calbayog City proper to Barangay Mawacat and a 25-minute walk thereafter along a foot trail lined with tall shady trees.

Description: A natural spoon-like formation which inclines more or less by about 45 degrees and stretching 50 meters long. Water flows along this giant cistern and from the top, one can slide through the mossy lane to the cool inviting pool below.

BANGON-BUGTONG FALLS

Location: From Brgy. San Joaquin of Calbayog City, it is a 1-hour and 15-minute ride to Barangay Tinaplacan plus 45-minute walk to the vicinity of the falls.

Description: Among the family of waterfalls of Calbayog City, Bangon, Bugtong Falls is one of the most majestic and spectacular spots that is worth visiting. As one ascends the stream, he will be amazed to see a circular pond of about 30 meters in diameter, wide enough for swimming and deep enough for diving. The cascading water seems to come from streams flowing endlessly resulting from the pressure of its disgorge which becomes even bigger in volume and noticeable as the time of the day passes. Bugtong Falls is not only a tourist spot but also a potential source of power for Calbayog City and its neighboring localities.

TABOKNO FALLS

Location: Barangay Caybago, Oquendo District, an hour drive from Calbayog City and 40-minute walk from the villages.

Description: A beautiful and scenic waterfall. This wonderful creation of nature is a favorite picnic site of local residents and their source of potable water.

Location: At Danao I some 14 kms. toward the western coast of Calbayog City.

Description: Made up of seven chambers inhabited by various species of snakes and bats as evidenced by a good deposit of guano. The cave serves as an initiating place for those who want to acquire talisman.

SAMAR ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM AND RESEARCH CENTER

Location: Christ the King College, Calbayog City.

Description: Opened on April 11, 1970, it is the first and only museum in Samar island. A collection of archeological artifacts including burial jars and covers, log coffin, jarlets, cups, howls, saucers and dishes dating back to the 14th Century; coins, heirlooms, old household items, religious items such as saints, altar, chalices and monstrance.

PAN-AS FALLS

Location: Brgy. Pilar, Oquendo District, one hour drive from Calbayog City proper; plus 1-hour walk onwards from the village.

Description: More than a beauty spot, this falls is the primary source of water for its residents. At places where the cataract is so high, the water falling into the pool below becomes a mere mist.

GUIMIT CAVE

Location: At the municipality of Talalora, approximately 75 kilometers from Catbalogan, Samar; plus a one and a half hour motorboat ride.

Description: A large cave full of stalactites and stalagmites and artifacts of the pre- historic era.

SOHOTON NATURAL BRIDGE NATIONAL PARK

Location: Basey Samar, about 45 minutes away from Tacloban City by land transportation; plus a 2-hour pumpboat ride to the cave.

Description: Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park showcases the grandeur of natural resources of Samar Island and of Region 8. It is internationally known for its natural beauty expressed in its caves, subterranean rivers, waterfalls and unique limestone formations. It is an idyllic place for recreation. It was established as a national park on July 19, 1935 by virtue of Proclamation No. 831 primarily to preserve its geological features and natural wonders.

Three navigable rivers traverse the park: Basey, Sohoton, and Bugasan Rivers. Cabungaan Waterfalls, on the northeastern portion of the park, serves as a natural siphon for Sohoton River.

The whole area has the typical appearance of karst formations with an intriguing variety of deep shafts and sinkhole caves, rock-shelters, underground rivers and bizarre weather-sculpted rock formations. All the caves are situated in towering and very rugged limestone cliffs which line the river, creating a magnificent scenery.

Traces of early habitation dating as far back as the Iron Age and Stone Age have been found in the different caves. These caves are also believed to have been used as burial sites for the natives and mecca for medicine men who hunt and prepare their potions. The caves were also used as hideouts of Filipino ‘Insurrectos’ during the Spanish-American War.

Adding to its enchanting beauty and geological wonders, the park is endowed with a rich stock of forest vegetation which serves as home to varied forms of endemic, rare and endangered Philippine fauna. Mammals and reptiles abound in the park, freshwater fish, crabs and shrimps.

A magnificent stone bridge, from which the park got its name, connecting two mountain ridges, underneath flows the Sohoton River. An exciting adventure inside caves with unique, exquisite limestone formations.

• Panhulugan Cave I is the largest and most spectacular endogenic cave.
• Panhulugan II Cave is a long scar that cuts into the face of Panhulugan Cliff, a high and deep rock formation.
• Sohoton Cave is a very large endogenic cave situated in the eastern portion of the natural bridge. It has a high cathedral-like dome with an entrance of parabolic arch.
• Bugasan and Capigtan Caves are smaller caves similar to Sohoton Cave.

Permitted Activities : spelunking, nature tripping, scientific researches and studies, bird watching, swimming, boating and photography.

Prohibited Activities : Gathering of wildlife and other park resources, cutting of trees, mineral resources exploitation, squatting/settlement.

CALBIGA CAVE

Location: Calbiga, Samar, 52 kms. from Tacloban City; the cave is 6 kilometers away from the townproper, accessible by land transport and by foot.

Description: The Philippines' biggest karst formations and one of the largest in Asia, the 2,968-hectare cave system is composed of 12 caves with wide underground spaces, unique rock formations and sub-terranean watercourse. The surface area of Calbiga Caves has a "mid-mountain" forest which is the habitat of some threatened wild species like bats, cave crickets, eyeless shell fishes.

It was first scientifically explored in 1987 by an eight- man team of Italian speleologists who believed there are still several hundreds of kilometers of galleries waiting to be explored. The karst has an estimated total surface area of 900 sg. km. The main cave, Langun, has a chamber that could easily fit in three football fields. The two other big caves are Gobingob and Bitong Mahangin.

BINALIW ISLE

Location: Brgy. Maguino-o, Tinambacan District, Calbayog City. It is separated from the mainland by the Silangan Channel.

Description: A potential diving deep, about 40 to 50 meters from the water surface and measures less than a hectare in area. The islet is surrounded with aquifer equally and uniformly spread at the peripheral limits of the islet with white sand and pebbles. Beneath the deep waters are sea corals of multifarious variety, rare white pebbles spread all over the floors, 20 types of shells and ornamental types of aqua-marine species which can be explored by the diver for as long as one is in his spectacular underwater gears.

TINAGO-AN CAVE

Location: Barangay Lungsod, Oquendo District, Calbayog City.

Description: Tinago-an means hiding place. Its natural dark tunnels offers excitement and thrill to adventurers.

BLANCA AURORA FALLS

Location: San, Jorge, Samar.

Description: A favorite bathing resort of Samareños. The ruins of Bangahon in Gandara is a historical landmark as it was once a town during the revolutionary days. It was abandoned by the old residents who later found the present town of Gandara.

MALAJOG BEACH

Location: Just a 40-minute drive from Calbayog City.

Facilities: Cottages

Attractions: Grayish sand, blue waters, swaying palm trees, towering rocks and three balconied cottages give this spot a South Sea Island appeal. Magnificent view of sunset behind nearby islands. Made famous by the visits of VIPs, movie stars and diplomats.

BASEY 17th CENTURY CHURCH (St. Michael the Archangel Church)

Location: Basey, Samar; a 45-minute drive from Tacloban City.

Description: An old Catholic Church built during the Spanish era. It features a watchtower and old images of saints painted on the ceiling.

LOLOGAYAN FALLS

Location: A 45-minute ride to Barangay San Joaquin, Tinambacan District from Calbayog City proper and a 25-minute hike onward to the falls. It is separated away from the mainland by the Silangan Channel.

Description: A series of towering altars of rugged stones where between its depressions flow ribbon-like cool water that cleansed the hair of a legendary lady. A source of potable water for local folks.

TON-OK FALLS

Location: A 45-minute drive from Calbayog City proper to Sigo plus 30-minute hike to Ton-ok falls.

Facilities: Hanging bridge.

Description: A scenic waterfall hidden in a lush tropical vegetation. Nature has placed it out of easy reach to preserve its beauty. A source of hydroelectric power.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SEMINARY

Location: On top of Dagum Hills, just a 5-minute drive from Calbayog City passing along a 300-hundred meter zigzag road.

Attraction: A seminary offering specialized philosophy degree for priesthood. Fronting the seminary is a huge replica of Our Lady of Fatima carved similarly to the one in Italy. Refreshing, cool mountain breeze, scenic view of Calbayog City and Samar Sea.

NIJAGA PARK

Location: Beautifully situated at the heart of Calbayog City along the river.

Description: Site of social, political, cultural and sports activities. The Rizal monument, a fountain and amphitheater are its focal features.

Location: Ten-minute drive from Calbayog City proper.

Description: Cottages line along its grayish sandy shore. Its cool fresh water, scenic view of Samar Island attracts picnickers and beachcombers.

CALBAYOG CATHEDRAL

Location: The Cathedral occupies one whole block in the heart of Calbayog City.

Description: Its tell-tale dome, spire and thick walls reveal the blending of Spanish and modern architectural designs.

SACRED HEART STATUE

Location: Behind the Holy Infant Parish Church of Oquendo, a 30-minute drive north of Calbayog City.

Description: The statute of the Sacred of Jesus on top of the hill overlooking the panoramic view of Calbayog City, the Hibatang River and lush greenery.

BAGACAY BEACH

Location: A 15-minute walk or a 7-minute drive from Calbayog City proper. It is located along the Maharlika Highway.

Facilities: Resort cottages for travelers and picnickers alike.

Description: An uncrowded pearl white strip of coastline with coconut trees offering a scenic view of island towns.

SACRED HEART (Julio Cardinal Rosales) PLAZA

Location: Across the Calbayog Cathedral and City Hall.

Description: A conspicuous plaza with the image of the Sacred Heart where socio- civic and religious activities are held; its bright lights and relaxing ambiance attracts strollers.

MARABUT MARINE PARK

Location: Marabut, Samar

Facilities: Resort, boats, aqua sports equipment

Description: 15 towering rock islets with secluded beach coves and coral gardens ideal for snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, sunbathing and other aqua sports activities.

THE ULOT TORPEDO BOAT EXTREME RIDE

War is a thing of the past in Samar. Today, the Philippines’ third largest and naturally blessed island is waging a fight against biodiversity threats and widespread poverty through alternative means of livelihood like ecotourism. Torpedo sounds war-like. Yes. But by coincidence, the latest ecotourism adventure product of Samar is ULOT TORPEDO

BOAT EXTREME RIDE. This dug-out motorized boat has no outriggers and it looks like a torpedo. When it traverses the river, its motion through the downstream and upstream rides resembles a torpedo. It is manned by experts - a boatman and a pointman who take one on a “roller coaster ride” through the Ulot River- the longest river in Samar Island. Ulot was a navigational highway before between Western Samar and Eastern Samar, covering eleven (11) municipalities. The maneuvering skills of the boatmen are amazing and their familiarity with the river terrain is reassuring. Not to mention their swimming and lifesaving capabilities. But most of all, the simple joy of being amidst nature in Samar - its tropical rainforest, mighty rivers, mysterious caves, majestic waterfalls, and the warmth and grace of the Samareños makes the boating experience worthwhile. The boat ride upstream is even more thrilling and challenging as the boatmen push up the boat in between big boulders. And for a relaxed mode afterwards, hop on a kayak or enjoy water tubing.

Accessibility

The favored route to this part of the island is through the 2.16 kilometer long San Juanico Bridge from Leyte Island following a plane trip via Manila-Tacloban. Leyte Samar Tour with PHITEX delegates

Eastern Visayas is special for me, and I will never get tired of mentioning it many times. LOL!

It was 2000 when I first traveled to Tacloban. I was a high school student then, and I qualified for the National Schools Press Conference, an annual country-wide writing competition for students which was hosted by the city that year.

Aside from the fact that it was my first plane experience, in Tacloban, I got a glimpse of the very first signs of what I should be doing in my life, signs that I had ignored for many years. I traveled to Tacloban as a student writer, and it was the first sign that I should pursue writing.

But being unfocused, stressed and all, I have been wandering for many years, doing works from the media to BPO, shipping, to the corporate world. Until when I was 30, exhausted and clearly wanted to feel alive again, when I launched my travel blog. Then it finally clicked. The blog grew until such time that I was able to quit my corporate job to do this full time.

In 2015, I was invited for my first ever Fam trip with TPB, and it was in Eastern Visayas, exploring Samar and Leyte.

In 2019, I am back for the PHITEX post-tour in the region. I traveled Samar and Leyte for 4 days with the PHITEX delegates. Sharing you here our awesome experience as well as the tourist attractions in the region. I will be writing separate blog posts for each attraction to share the experience in full detail. But for this post, I’ll give you a quick tour of these tourist spots in Samar and Leyte.

• San Juanico Cruise

Would you like to witness the iconic San Juanico Bridge from a different perspective?

San Juanico Cruise lets you experience all that. This is a community-based project that started in 2015 to promote ecotourism as well as to provide livelihood for the residents.

Over the years, The San Juanico Cruise has become a popular tourism activity not only for the locals but also for the domestic and international travelers. This was our first activity when we arrived in Tacloban. It was such a nice way for us to start our day by witnessing the beauty of nature along the San Juanico Strait while relaxing on a boat.

We finished the cruise at Sta. Rita, Samar where we had our breakfast at San Juan By The Bay Floating Restaurant.

San Juan By the Bay Floating Restaurant

Located on the other side of San Juanico Bridge if you’re from Tacloban, San Juan By the Bay Floating restaurant in Sta. Rita, Samar is another successful community-based tourism project, spearheaded by ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, LGU and DOT Region 8.

We experienced the warm waray welcome when we arrived at the floating restaurant, offering us some of the best local dishes of Samar. It was a satisfying breakfast with the awesome view of the iconic San Juanico Bridge and surrounding lush nature.

Aside from the floating restaurant, a 400-meter boardwalk lets the tourists witness the rich mangroves in the area. If ever you visit Samar, head on to Sta. Rita and experience the delicious meals and warm hospitality that is truly waray .

• Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge Park

Please note that Sohoton Cave and Natural Bridge is just a tiny part of the entire Natural Park which is about 841 hectares. This is popular among tourists who wanted to get close to nature and enjoy some adventure. Among the popular activities at Sohoton are caving and kayaking towards the huge natural bridge. A must experience when you visit Samar.

The weavers of Samar have been getting quite a lot of attention in social media in the past years. Thanks to the Spark Samar tourism campaign of the town, supported by the Department of Tourism.

During my last trip to Basey, Samar we witnessed how women weavers do their work while under the cave. Weaving in Basey is a major industry, creating livelihood to most women in the community.

We can show our support for the women of Samar, not only patronizing their products, but also by ensuring that they are well-paid for their creativity and hardwork. DOT is actively supporting them to market their products worldwide, and some NGOs are helping them to make weaving as a sustainable livelihood. Let’s support projects and programs that help their livelihood sustainable.

Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman island still remains as one of the most beautiful sandbars in the Philippines.

On my second visit, it is clear that they have been doing a great job. For those who want to travel to Kalanggaman, Palompon is just a 2-hour land trip from Tacloban. Proper coordination at the Municipal Toursim Office is required to secure slots for the boat rental. They are implementing strict environmental regulations to protect the island.

Torpedo Extreme Boat Ride

Ride the long motorboat, fast enough that it cuts through the strong currents of the Ulot River. The experience is about 11 kilometers of the entire 90-kilometer long Ulot River from Samar to Eastern Samar province.

This is another award-winning community-based project of LGU’s Spark Samar and the DOT.

Visit San Juanico Bridge

Your travel to Tacloban or in the Eastern Visayas would not be complete without witnessing the iconic San Juanico Bridge. In the beginning of this post, I’ve share to you the San Juanico Cruises, that lets you explore the San Juanico Strait and witness the bridge from a different perspective.

But you can also do the usual tourist activity which is taking photos on San Juanico Bridge.

Explore Tourist Sites in Tacloban

Tacloban is not just Leyte’s capital city. It has attractions that deserve to be explored by any visitors. During our my last travel with the PHITEX delegates, we visited the Sto. Nino Shrine and Heritage Museum.

This used to be the house of then-President Marcos and his wife, Imelda, who is a native of Leyte. The structure has a grand ballroom with extravagant furniture, which only shows the lavish lives of the former President’s family during the Martial law. Now, it is a museum, open to the public. Aside from Sto. Nino Shrine, some of the notable spots near Tacloban are McArthur Landing Memorial Park (Palo), M/V Eva Jocelyn Shrine, and lots of restaurants offering delicious Filipino dishes.

A night of networking

On the last night of the trip, the DOT Region 8 organized a B2B networking event to connect the local travel companies in the region with the PHITEX delegates who are travel agency owners and tour operators from different parts of the world.

It was a night of celebration of new friendships and connections for future tourism collaborations.
