Field Trip Ideas for High School Chemistry

The Best Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Schools

Field trips are an excellent way to underscore lessons and help students understand that what they learn in the classroom can be applied to real life. When developing field trips for chemistry students, a teacher needs to focus on demonstrations of professional chemistry that are dramatic, entertaining and hopefully point out the career options available to somebody trained as a chemist.

Sewage Treatment Plant

Most cities and towns are within driving distance of a sewage treatment plant. A tour of the plant will teach students about the chemistry behind water purity, pH factor, pollution and some kinds of disease. Pair this field trip with classroom labs on filtering or purifying water.

Manufacturing

Countless products require the use of specialized chemicals or mixtures of chemicals in order to get made. If you can get access to a plant where students can see the result of professional chemistry it can be an unforgettable experience. Some good examples would be metal (where elements are mixed to create different grades of steel), computer components (where chemicals are used to create raw materials and others are used to make them market-ready) or plants where chemicals themselves are prepared for sale.

Ordinance Disposal

Pyrotechnics is a branch of applied chemistry. Most metropolitan areas have a day or two a year where the police blow up confiscated ammunition and explosives. Though not the most educational field trip imaginable, this will definitely be one of the most popular. Contact your local police department to get this ball rolling, and definitely get permission from your administrator.

Fire Department

Fire is a chemical reaction, and fire suppression depends on other chemical reactions. A trip to the fire department can show students how knowing the way chemicals can interact will save lives. As firefighting is a high-glamour job, this field trip can attract students who otherwise seem disinterested in chemistry.

Southern Florida

Southern Florida is home to diverse landscapes and ecosystems, making it a fantastic location for scientific discovery and adventure. Your students can spend the afternoon swimming with dolphins, snorkeling on coral reefs, kayaking through marshes, or caring for marine mammals at the aquarium.

Southern Florida is an especially great place for s cience trips for high school students. Grand Canyon, Zion, & Bryce

Yellowstone is one of the only places in the United States that houses geysers, hot springs, and other hydrothermal features. Did you know that Disney World has many educational programs for student groups? Central Florida is home to dozens of STEM-focused programs that bring science to life for your students.

Starry-eyed and technologically savvy students can visit the Kennedy Space Center to learn about space and aeronautics. Eco-obsessed students can spend time on an ecology-focused kayak or paddleboarding tour through warm Florida waters. South Dakota

Teachers often get confused when we mention a school trip to South Dakota. But picture this! South Dakota is home to four different land regions, each with its own geological and ecological features. Students can see bison up close, explore underground caverns, and look out over the Badlands – that’s just day one!

While in South Dakota, students can also get hands-on experience in high-tech labs and observatories. If you’re more interested in archeology, the Mammoth Site is an active paleontological excavation site for students to explore. During your visit, students also have countless opportunities to learn more about the history and culture of the Lakota tribe.

New York City

New York City offers an incredible cultural experience for students and is also the location of many STEM-related attractions. Soaring skyscrapers offer students insight into the feats of engineering. A map of streets and subway tunnels poses challenging mathematical problems for travelers to solve. Additionally, New York has several fantastic science museums to explore during your school trip.

Students can spend their morning learning about history and science at the Intrepid Air & Space Museum, then search for patterns, geometry, and algebra in the world around them at MoMath in the afternoon. If that isn’t enough, the New York Natural History Museum brings students face-to-face with planetariums, dinosaurs, and other scientific artifacts.

Florida isn’t the only great science destination in the southeast! Charleston is a beautiful location for student tours with rich history and unique ecosystems that make for great hands-on STEM activities. Your students can ride the waves along the coast, learning more about how the barrier islands were formed and what wildlife lives in the surrounding waters. Older students can kayak through the salt marshes with naturalist tour guides and experience the tides up close.

If staying on dry ground is more appealing, you can take your students to the South Carolina Aquarium. The staff has a whole section dedicated to rehabilitating injured sea turtles, and your students can see marine life up close without getting into the water. Before taking off, bring your students for a deep dive into history and science in one massive museum aboard the decommissioned USS Yorktown.

Chemistry, always struggled with this one at school, I used to have sleepless nights trying to remember the periodic table before a big test and I still couldn't tell you what the symbol for Seaborgium is. Chemistry is the science of matter and is often described as the central science because its links biology and physics. The modern practices of Chemistry can be dated back to the Ancient Egyptians, and by 1000BC civilisations were developing techniques that demonstrated an understanding of chemical reactions such as producing medicines from plants, extracting metals from ore and fermentation.

Chemistry in the class room doesn't need to be about trawling through text books or trying to memorise the periodic table, practical activities are fun and help motivate pupils to learn and enjoy the subject. I can certainly remember those basic chemistry experiments such as igniting magnesium (so it burns with a bright white flame!) and removing the tarnish from a 2 penny piece, so why not take these sorts of experiences outside the confines of the school lab.

There are some fantastic Science centres in the UK that offer materials and properties demonstrations and engaging work shops designed to inspire future scientists, and by taking your class on such school trips you'll not only be the cool science teacher but you may also encourage the scientists of tomorrow to pursue Chemistry as a career path.

In Iceland, science students can immerse themselves in the ever-changing dramatic landscapes of Iceland and enjoy being in the great outdoors.

There are opportunities to learn about the physics behind the Northern Lights, the mineral chemistry in geothermal mud pools, or the biology of how life has adapted in the land of fire and ice.

Our subject specialists lead the tours and introduce your group to the effects of climate change on the Solheimajokull glacier and how locals take advantage of tectonic activity and water resources to generate energy. Lava tube caving, whale watching and Aurora Reykjavik

Head to the land of fire and ice for your scientific expedition!

You’ll head to Raufarholshellir for a lava tube caving experience. The lava tube was carved through the rock over 5 thousand years ago. Depending on the time of year you visit you’ll also find ice stalagmites which provide an otherworldly atmosphere as your guide explains the tube’s formation.

As a stark contrast to your first activity, you will then take to the waters by boat to seek out some of Iceland’s biggest inhabitants, whales! Keep your eyes peeled as minke whales, humpback whales and even blue whales have been spotted off the coastlines of Iceland.

Many tourists and school groups hope to catch a glimpse of the northern lights on their visit to Iceland but not everyone gets lucky. Your group are guaranteed a sighting when they visit Aurora Reykjavik, a multimedia attraction that replicates and explains the phenomena on large HD projections.

Power station visit, waterfalls, glaciers, black beaches and real lava!

At first glance, a visit to a power station may sound run of the mill, but Hellisheidi is quite different. The power harnessed at Hellisheidi is geothermal energy, one of Iceland’s most abundant resources. The experienced staff will passionately describe the importance of sustainable energy and how the power plant operates.

You will then visit Skogafoss , one of Iceland’s most recognisable waterfalls. On sunny days students will see rainbows form in the mist and they can even fill up their water bottles with crisp fresh water from the stream.

No science school trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to a glacier. Solheimajokull is a great example of the effects of global warming on Iceland. Your guide will explain how the glacier has retreated over time and how rocks within the ice can tell a story about Iceland’s volcanic history.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience for students is the Icelandic Lava Show. One of the only opportunities ever to see real-life lava, this show provides students with invaluable insight into how lava is formed and the different types of lava.

Next is a visit to Dyrholaey, which is thought to have been created in a submarine eruption. Here you will find fascinating dramatic coastal scenery such as high cliffs, rock arches and stacks.

Geologists will enjoy the next stop on your south coast tour, Reynishfjara . The black beaches here were formed as lava flows met the ice-cold ocean and broke apart. Basalt columns line the beach and make for a vivid classroom.

Heimay island, Eldheimar exhibition and Seljalandsfoss

The island of Heimay translates as home island. As well as being home to 4,500 people it is home to 8 million puffins each summer. The island also has a fascinating volcanic history including the 1973 where the island grew in size.

You will visit the Eldheimar exhibition which will provide students with human stories of the 1973 eruption.

Back on the mainland, your group will discover one of Iceland’s most photogenic waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss . This waterfall has a unique path that leads behind the water (top tip: wear your waterproofs to shield from the spray!)

Golden Circle tour

Begin your Golden Circle tour with the roaring two-tiered waterfall, Gullfoss . There are several viewpoints so your students will be able to see how the Hvita River has carved through the canyon.

Continuing the theme of iconic Icelandic landmarks, your next stop will be Geysir . Geysir gave all geysers their name and is home to several of its own, including Strokkur, which erupts every 6 minutes.

Your visit to Fridheimar Greenhouses will be an unexpected highlight. Say hello to the resident Icelandic horses at your entrance to the greenhouses. Tomatoes are grown all year, using state-of-the-art technology in an environmentally friendly way. Students are able to experience the growth of the tomatoes from ‘Seed to Soup’ by sampling Fridheimar’s delicious soup!

Study the rock cycle at the Rift Valley at Thingvellir – the divergent zone between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Your last stop of the day is Whales of Iceland , the largest whale exhibition in Europe. With 23 man-made life-sized models of whales suspended from the ceiling. Your guide will help you learn more about these giant creatures.

Return to Keflavik and head home

Pick up any last-minute Icelandic liquorice souvenirs at the airport on your way home after this unforgettable trip.

Trip notes:

There are so many additional activities you can add and swap on this itinerary for example, a swim in the Blue Lagoon or the Secret Lagoon or get closer to Solheimajokull glacier by embarking on an ice-climbing expedition.

This itinerary has been based on a group of 36 students and 4 teachers travelling in October 2023.

1. MIT’s Research Science Institute (RSI)

RSI is a highly competitive (and prestigious) program that covers an array of STEM subjects - and chemistry is no exception! It has an acceptance rate of less than 5% so you’ll definitely find yourself among the brightest of peers and mentors!

This is a research-based summer program which invites independent research in chemistry while engaging in college-level chemistry courses.

Here’s a chemistry project that previous RSI participants worked on - The Monoreduction of Diketones and its Application towards the Total Synthesis of Kalmanol (2006) by Kenneth I. Brewer. You can view more such projects here .

To make the most of this program, you are expected to keep yourself aware of the latest literature in the field of chemistry, design a research plan from scratch, and work on oral and written presentations of your findings, all under the guidance of the brightest scholars in the world.

2. Lumiere Research Scholar Program , Chemistry Track

Lumiere was founded by researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Hundreds of ambitious high school students do chemistry research through the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs. Each student is paired with a top PhD and works with their mentor 1-1 to produce a university-level research paper.

The programs are entirely virtual and vary in duration based on the student’s end goal with respect to how much of a deep dive they would prefer. The research opportunities range from

3. Summer Scholar Program at the Illinois Insitute of Technology

Another great program that is free of cost is Illinois Tech University’s 8-week annual Summer Scholar Program. If you have already displayed a strong grasp of chemistry and want to work in a research lab, then the Department of Chemistry (which hosts this program) had solid research options for you program is for high-achieving high school students who display a passion for chemistry and have the aptitude to work in a research lab.

Research areas in the program include bioanalytical chemistry, computational chemistry and biochemistry, environmental chemistry, forensic chemistry, and medicinal chemistry related to energy and sustainability science, materials science, sensor science and technology, computational science, data science, bioanalysis, and health with real-world applications.

We hope you love working in a lab because you can expect to work for 30 hours a week for 8-10 weeks in the summer.

4. Applied Research Innovations in Science and Engineering (ARISE)

A 7-week full-day summer program, ARISE is offered by NYU, and combines college-level workshops and lab research in chemical engineering, in addition to other subjects. If you choose to participate in the program, you will be expected to engage in college-level research, expository writing, scientific methods, professional development, and ethics. Alongside these skills and exposure to academic research, you also receive presentation and public speaking training. And as part of the program’s conclusion, you and your peers present your research findings to NYU faculty and graduate students, ARISE, peers, other academic experts, family members, and friends at the ARISE’s concluding colloquium.

5. Chemistry Research Academy at Penn University

Penn University hosts the Chemistry Research Academy annually, an on-campus summer program. CRA is aimed at providing students with foundational knowledge that is necessary for cutting-edge research in the field of chemistry, right before their college careers. You can expect to do the following activities and work on a capstone project. If you’re worried about not knowing where to start, you will be mentored and guided by top scholars in your field at Penn. The Academy curriculum also includes lectures, lab experience, presentations, trips and tours, and group discussions. As for the cherry on the top, you can also choose to work on a capstone project - this is particularly useful if you plan on pursuing research/academia right after college. The capstone project provides you with guidance through a process to choose and plan your own independent research project using Penn’s online resources. You will leave with a plan you can use for entering a science fair such as ISEF or STS, or for meeting your high school’s independent research requirements.

This program is perfect for any student looking to create a strong foundation in chemistry and scientific research!

Cost: $9,700 + $150 application fee. Additionally, you are eligible for a full scholarship if you attend a School District of Philadelphia public or charter high school as part of the Penn Summer Scholarship .

6. Science for Youth Intensive Program (SYIP)

Looking for an internship cum learning program in chemistry? UC Berkeley's SYIP program, hosted by its College of Chemistry, is for talented high schoolers passionate about a career in chemistry. One reason why this program made it to our list is because apart from basic chemistry, you are also encouraged to pursue research in related fields such as chemistry, biochemical chemistry, material science, etc. This immersion gives you the right kind of exposure, especially if you’re confused about which stream(s) to pursue after picking Chemistry as your undergrad major. The program accepts about 30 students and offers an extensive 4-week internship program that includes data analysis, non- hazardous laboratory procedures and attending seminars and group meetings. Once selected, you will be paired with a mentor, who shall take you through concept development, methods design, decision-making, scientific processes, and the inner workings of world-renowned laboratories.

Before the 4-week on-site internship, there is a 9-month remote coaching program that preps you for the projects you will take up under the guidance of your assigned mentor, as well as provide an introduction to advanced chemical concepts.

7. Seminars in Modern Chemistry at Columbia University

Columbia University's Pre College program in Chemistry, or the Intensive Seminars in Modern Chemistry enhances your understanding of chemistry and current research methods, all while you're in high school. The summer program is open to all high-achieving high schoolers and follows a seminar format. You are expected to attend daily presentations, group discussions, and lab experiences. You are also guided through various advanced instrumental methods such as spectroscopy, chromatography, magnetic resonance, and computer simulations.

Guest lectures and field trips are also part of the experience, and to successfully complete the program, you are expected to submit a small research project, prepare a scientific paper, and participate regularly in class discussions.

8. UC San Diego Research Scholars Program

This summer program selects 25 students to work on research, individually with a UCSD faculty researcher across various subjects and research topics. Students receive access to laboratories on campus and are encouraged to carry out research in the field of their choice. Apart from working on your scientific thinking and research skills, the Research Scholars Program also lets you build strong connections with peers, mentors, and other faculty. You can pick from the following program tracks - Design Thinking Lab, Bioengineering, Life Sciences, Marine Science, etc.

9. California Academy of Science Careers in Science (CiS) Intern Program

This long-running program, which began in 1996, allows San Francisco students from underrepresented populations in STEM professions to learn about science and sustainability while also receiving mentorship, building professional skills, and more – all while being compensated for their efforts. Throughout the program, you are also encouraged to participate in seminars and conferences, as well as interact with faculty, mentors, and talented students such as yourself.

As for specific subject tracks such as chemistry, we reached out to the CiS team, and here’s the answer we received - students are allocated to roles and departments in a museum setting based on their interests and opportunities they have available in the museum at the time.

10. Simons Summer Research Program

The Simons Summer Research Program allows high school students to undertake hands-on research in a variety of disciplines, including chemistry. You can join research teams, collaborate with faculty members, learn about laboratory equipment and methodologies, and get to fully experience life at a research university. As part of the program, you are expected to carry out your own research, using cutting-edge equipment provided by the university. To complete this apprenticeship, you are required to produce a written research abstract and a research poster. The program has an acceptance rate of about 8%, making it quite competitive as well as prestigious.

Fund-A-Bus Grant Initiative

It is recommended that your group secure transportation before making a reservation with the Science Center. Buses and over-sized vans will unload groups in Heritage Park & Science. Parking passes will be given for the Civic East Garage for parking. Parking passes are an additional $6 per vehicle, please make sure to notify the Group Sales Department about your parking needs. Groups coming in cars will be able to park in the Heritage Garage, if it is not full. Ticket stubs will be validated at the Information Desk for discounted rates.

Field trips are generally scheduled from 10am-12pm, but may last anywhere from one hour for our youngest visitors to a half day or longer for those at the college level. Most K-8th grade field trips last two hours, but we can adapt field trips to meet the time limitations of any group.

spectrUM is committed to supporting the next generation of scientists and innovators by engaging students in hands-on science. The exhibits and activities featured in our field trips are curated to inspire a culture of learning and discovery and are facilitated by trained educators who serve as role models by demonstrating a passion for science and pathways to higher education.

Field trips are designed to give students the opportunity to explore our museum independently to make their own discoveries, as well as work with our educators to learn science concepts through guided experiments and activities. While each field trip topic explores different themes, students and educators will model the scientific method and are encouraged to be curious learners. Field trip curricula are designed to meet NGSS, but may be adapted to all ages and abilities.

School lunches.

During events, we have limited space available for students to eat packed lunches (which cannot be eaten anywhere else in the building) and it is not always available. You must book ahead if you wish to use it, though we can't guarantee its availability.

Weather-permitting, Green Park makes a nice lunch venue and is only a five minute walk from the Ri.

How to find us

Free transport within london.

You can get free travel for schools groups within London by registering with Transport for London's School Party Travel Scheme . You must register at least 14 days before the date of travel. We recommend that make a 'dry run' to the Ri if you haven't visited us before. Please make sure that you allow enough time to be with us about 20 minutes before the official start time of the event.

The closest tube station to the Royal Institution is Green Park on the Jubilee, Victoria and Piccadilly lines. The Royal Institution is a five minute walk from the station.

Also within a ten minute walking distance is Piccadilly Circus tube station, on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines, or Oxford Circus tube station on the Victoria, Central and Bakerloo lines.

There are many buses that run along Piccadilly, which crosses the entrance to Albemarle Street. Bus numbers: 9, 14, 19, 22 and 38

Albemarle Street is a one-way street. It is also quite narrow. Download parking near the Ri for schools  for more information about the nearest coach bays.

The Ri is located within the Congestion Charging zone.

We like to film our events and our right to do so forms part of the terms of ticket purchase. Photographs or video footage of shows, which may include that of audience participants, may be used for marketing purposes on Ri communication channels or those of our partners.

It is the responsibility of teachers to ensure that they have obtained consent for their students to be filmed at our events.

PROVIDENCE – A Superior Court judge upheld the firing of a North Kingstown High School chemistry teacher who coined "distasteful" nicknames for female students, including "crop top Karen," "baby" and "babela."

Judge Stephen P. Nugent on Friday ruled that the state commissioners of education and the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education got it right when they upheld the firing of James Viner in 2015 for “good and just” cause after a student reported that he'd kissed her on the cheek. 

Viner’s lawyer, Carly Iafrate, declined comment Wednesday.

According to Viner's LinkedIn page, he worked for North Kingstown as a chemistry teacher for 18 years and now teaches science at Ocean Tides .

Student alleges she was kissed on the cheek

According to the ruling, a parent reported to then-Assistant Principal Barbara Morse in 2015 that her daughter had a panic attack after failing chemistry, and that Viner kissed her on the cheek when she asked to go to the nurse’s office. The student alleged, too, that Viner repeatedly made inappropriate comments about female students.

Former Schools Supt. Philip Auger referred the matter to the district’s lawyer, who brought on lawyer Aubrey Lombardo to investigate. Lombardo interviewed five female students and prepared her findings in what was referred to as the Viner Report.

The district’s lawyer, Mary Ann Carroll, informed Viner through his union representative that a student alleged he had kissed her and that an investigation was underway. Auger notified him via letter that there would be a pre-deprivation hearing, after which the superintendent recommended to the School Committee that Viner be suspended without pay for the rest of the school year and fired at its conclusion. Viner did not receive the so-called Viner Report.

Did the School Committee prove Viner should be fired?

Outlining the allegations against Viner, the School Committee, in its statement of cause, said he:

• Admitted to calling a student a “10 out of 10”;
• Told another that she had a “complete body”;
• Referred to another as “Daisy” as in Daisy Duke, and still others as "baby."

He denied kissing the student, saying that he only blew a kiss in her ear.

The committee voted 4-to-0 to suspend Viner and terminate him at the end of the school year. Viner appealed the decision to the state Department of Education. A hearing officer found that the School Committee had violated his due-process rights by failing to provide him with the report until eight months after Auger’s recommendation that he be fired.

The hearing officer noted that eight of nine students who testified did not think Viner made comments with sexual intent, and that even the student thought the kiss was intended to comfort her.

The hearing officer concluded that the School Committee did not satisfy its burden of showing that the firing was for “good and just cause.”

Then-Education Commissioner Ken Wagner, however, concluded that the officer had reached the wrong conclusion and that Viner’s admissions that he blew a kiss in a student’s ear and failed to maintain professional classroom boundaries satisfied the “good and just” cause standard for termination. He affirmed the School Committee’s suspension and firing of Viner.

Firing upheld by Superior Court

Viner then subpoenaed and deposed the district’s lawyers, Carroll and Lombardo, and asked Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green to reopen the record, arguing that the depositions showed the investigation was biased.

Infante-Green agreed that Viner’s due-process rights had been violated but said that those violations were cured by the multi-day hearing before the hearing officer. Infante-Green upheld Wagner’s decision.

Viner then appealed to the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education, which found that Infante-Green cited good law in determining the “good and just cause” standard and was not in error. The council also concluded that the hearing cured any due-process violations. 

Viner appealed to Superior Court, arguing his due-process rights were violated.

In ruling, Nugent found that Viner’s hearing before the hearing officer – “with counsel present and copious witnesses testifying” – cured any due-process violations. He concluded that Wagner had detailed multiple actions by Viner that “satisfied the 'good and just cause' standard, including frequently commenting on female students’ appearances and giving them distasteful nicknames.”

Music Teacher Is Charged With Taking Teenagers on Trips to Abuse Them

Paul Geer taught for decades at the Family Foundation School, a rural reform academy where he abused students, an indictment states.

The music teacher’s classes at the strict, no-nonsense reform school in the woods of upstate New York would seem to be a teenager’s respite amid all the rules, a place for expression and discovery.

But a criminal indictment unsealed Thursday portrayed that teacher as a domineering and abusive tyrant who, during one-on-one trips away from school and outside the state, raped his teenage students or forced them into sexual activity.

The indictment follows years of lawsuits that have portrayed the Family Foundation School , a small boarding academy in rural Delaware County, as something closer to an unsupervised, violent prison.

The teacher, Paul Geer, 56, was arrested Wednesday evening in Hancock, N.Y., where he lives a short distance from the site of the school, which closed in 2014. He was charged with six counts related to bringing three different children across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity.

Mr. Geer pleaded not guilty at an arraignment before a federal magistrate judge in Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday, and was denied release pending a detention hearing set for Monday.

For former students at the school, his arrest vindicated many years of online campaigns and legal battles involving that place and, specifically, that man.

Liz Boysick, 41, identified as “Victim 2” in the indictment, was 16 when Mr. Geer drove her to Pennsylvania ahead of a class trip there and forced her to perform oral sex in his van, she said. Decades later, she was in court to see Mr. Geer in shackles during the hearing.

“It was really powerful hearing what mattered to me counts,” she said afterward. “He will not get one more tear out of me. Now is the time for me to live my life.”

Mr. Geer was in his 20s and living with his parents when an older couple approached him at a choral recital he was leading and offered him a job at the Family School, as it is known, on the spot. They were Tony and Betty Argiros, who founded the school in the 1980s.

For Mr. Geer, that began a career of more than 20 years at the school, which billed itself as a last resort for parents frustrated and distraught by their children’s drug or alcohol abuse or behavioral issues. Former students have said he asked personal questions about their sex lives and singled out children to stay behind with him after class, which was held in a red barn beside a pond.

The indictment described Mr. Geer as a bully who, in addition to subjecting students to “repeated sexual abuse,” forced them to eat moldy food, haul heavy loads of rocks around the campus and endure communication blackouts for long periods.

On three separate occasions outlined in the indictment, Mr. Geer drove students out of state on one-on-one trips and coerced them into sexual activity. The victims were two boys and a girl, ages 14 to 17.

Mike Milia, 45, of Brooklyn, is identified as “Victim 1” in the indictment. He was 14 in 1994 when Mr. Geer took him on a fishing trip to Maine and sexually abused him, according to the indictment.

On the way back to Hancock, Mr. Geer “told him not to tell anyone of what had just happened,” according to a lawsuit filed by Mr. Milia in 2019. That case is pending.

Mr. Geer was questioned about taking a minor to Maine in a deposition that same year.

“In hindsight, I shouldn’t have done that,” he said, but he denied any sexual abuse.

“I think I behaved badly in a lot of ways,” Mr. Geer said in the deposition, referring to his time working at the school. “I definitely was very aggressive.”

The couple that founded the school later retired, and their son, Emmanuel Argiros, who goes by Michael, took over day-to-day operations before it closed. In depositions in 2018 and 2021, the younger Mr. Argiros denied hearing reports of abuse while at the school.

In 2018, The New York Times published an article describing a series of suicides and fatal overdoses by former students. More former students later came forward to describe horrific conditions at the school.

Liz Ianelli is a former student who recounted her time at the school and described the abuses inflicted on her there in her 2023 book, “I See You, Survivor.” She recalled being wrapped from neck to ankle in a blanket that was duct-taped closed, and left on the floor of an empty room, shimmying toward a bowl of tuna for food.

She was among the former students who hastily arranged travel to Syracuse on Thursday for the court hearing.

Sitting nearby was Mr. Milia, watching the man who had taken him to Maine 30 years ago.

“This guy threatened my life when I was 14 years old,” Mr. Milia said after the hearing. “When he walked through that door, it was the first time I felt like he couldn’t hurt me anymore. I am not scared anymore.”

Chemistry experiment gone wrong prompts evacuation of York County high school

A chemistry experiment gone wrong led to the evacuation of Kennard-Dale High School on Tuesday. 

The experiment in question caused a small explosion and smoke in one of the chemistry classrooms, Principal Chad Brindle wrote in a letter sent home to parents. The school’s fire alarm system was activated shortly after 10:15 a.m., prompting the evacuation of students and staff from the building. 

Local fire and emergency personnel were called to the school to ensure the scene was safe and to remove the smoke from the school. Students, faculty and staff were let back into the building just after 11:30 a.m.

Students who were in the classroom at the time of the explosion — and anyone else who reported feeling ill — were seen by the school nurse, according to Brindle. The letter did not state how many students were in the classroom at the time or how many people went to the school nurse after the incident. 

The chemistry classroom where the incident took place will remain closed until further notice, the principal said. The administration is working with a HAZMAT contractor to ensure the classroom is cleaned properly and can be used again.

Friday’s kickoff of the annual “Make Waves” Film Festival, hosted by the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, was slated to be the culmination of months of planning by 21-year-old Cal Poly San Luis Obispo junior Kenneth Taylor.

The mechanical engineering student from Richland, Wash. was known as much for his advocacy for the outdoors as he was for his enjoyment of it. Taylor was a founding member of the school’s Alpine Club and served as a trip leader for the campus’ Poly Escapes program, which offers trip-planning services and outdoor training for students.

He loved snow sports and rock climbing, friends said, up until the end.

School officials sent a campus-wide email Monday morning confirming that Taylor died Saturday “after an accident during a trip to Big Sur.”

“The university is in touch with Kenneth’s family and is extending its full support to them and his friends,” Cal Poly San Luis Obispo University President Jeffrey D. Armstrong wrote in the email. “Our thoughts are with them as they grieve their loss.”

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance to check on an overdue hiker at Salmon Creek Falls and the Pacific Coast Highway, according to a San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s spokesperson.

San Luis Obispo County deputies responded and found a deceased hiker Saturday evening at the base of a 12-story waterfall in the water, according to county officials. The death was not deemed suspicious.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, which is in charge of the investigation, did not respond to calls or an email requesting more information.

The death left one of Taylor’s best friends, Kenneth Bevens, in disbelief.

“What stood out to me about Kenneth was how positive and passionate he was,” Bevens said. “If you needed help with photography, with safety instruction, rock climbing tips or whatever, he always helped.”

Bevens met his outdoor comrade and namesake in October 2022 at a two-day event hosted by Poly Escapes, which was offering CPR training and wilderness certification, he said.

They called each other “the other Kenneth” and shared an age, a passion for the outdoors and were photographers. They were known around campus and at school events as “Kenneth squared.”

Bevens, a Camarillo native, said he had known a few Kenneths throughout his life, though they all preferred to be called Kenny or Ken. Taylor was the first person he knew, like him, to use his full first name.

“We were often confused for each other because we had so many of the same hobbies and friends,” Bevens said. “There was nobody like Kenneth, though.”

Bevens said Taylor was more of a landscape photographer and called himself a portrait shooter.

“I was going to teach Kenneth how to print so we could sell our photos at the film festival,” Bevens said. “We just had so many plans and I can’t believe he’s gone.”

Bevens said he was walking through a hallway on Monday when a mutual friend informed a professor that “Kenneth” had fallen to his death in Big Sur.

“Her eyes widened and she asked, ‘Oh my God, which one?’” Bevens said. “I felt like a ghost in a way, because I was always the other one, the other Kenneth. Now I’m not.”

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). First-year coaches look to continue winning ways in familiar places

Moments after Milton’s 10-2 comeback win over Bay State Conference rival Wellesley Monday afternoon, a roar went up from the Wildcats’ huddle in shallow left field.

Not only was it their first win of the year, and a resilient one at that, it was the first victory for first-year coach Greg Lannon .

Lannon is one of three new coaches for teams coming off deep runs in the state tournament — along with Casey Cummins at St. John’s (Shrewsbury) and Jon Dunn at Medfield. All three are at their alma maters.

After stepping in for Brendan Morrissey (who departed for Milton Academy), Lannon is tasked with continuing the recent success at 11th-ranked Milton (2-1), punctuated by back-to-back Division 2 titles . Fortunately, he was on the bench for both those runs.

“I learned so much in all my years here, but especially the last two,” Lannon said. “How to handle the team and handle pressure situations, and I think that’s helped me immensely.

As the junior varsity coach and a varsity assistant the past five years, Lannon knows his relationships with the players will show through since he’s worked with most of the roster. The Wildcats return key juniors Scott Longo , who has committed to Northeastern, and Harry Hinckle .

“It wasn’t a seamless transition per se: it’s a different voice, but I think having some continuity for them really helped,” Lannon said.

In the opposing dugout Monday was Wellesley first-year coach Ted Novio , stepping in following the departure of longtime coach Rob Kane . He is well versed in the Bay State Conference after starring at Braintree (and later the University of Maine).

At No. 4 St. John’s (2-1), Cummins took over for longtime coach Charlie Eppinger , who retired. It’s a full-circle moment for the former Pioneer — after graduating St. John’s in 2008, he joined Eppinger’s staff as an assistant. After not making the varsity team at Merrimack, Eppinger was his first call.

“I knew my playing career at some point, whenever that would be, would end, and I already had an interest in coaching,” Cummins said. “The day I didn’t make the team at Merrimack, I was like, ‘Alright, now coaching has started.’”

After stops across the state — Nichols College, the Worcester Bravehearts of the Futures League, the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Bourne Braves, and Sutton High last year — Cummins returned to St. John’s hoping to join Eppinger’s staff. Instead, he was handed the keys.

“Coming back to St. John’s was always the goal,” Cummins said. “I’m fortunate enough to have the opportunity and to realize that it doesn’t come around very often. I truly appreciate the tradition of the program and the weight of the job.”

The Pioneers’ strength is in their pitching. Seniors Noah Basgaard (Stonehill) and Brady Shea (Salve Regina) lead the way for a squad hoping to push past the semifinals, where they were stopped last year by Taunton.

At Medfield, where the Warriors have finished as runners-up in Division 3 two of the last three seasons, Dunn takes the reins from Dave Worthley , who retired.

Dunn, who played collegiately at James Madison, graduated from Medfield in 1994. He spent a few years as an assistant after he returned to the school to teach math, but after taking time off to coach his three children through youth baseball, Dunn is back on the field he used to play on.

“Watching the success that they’ve had, I feel honored to continue that path and be a part of future success,” Dunn said. “It means a lot to wear the Medfield hat and be a part of the Warrior baseball program.”

The Warriors (0-2) graduated 10 seniors from a squad that fell to Oakmont in the state final. But Dunn sees promise in the returning core up the middle, anchored by senior Jack Iovino (Merrimack) in center field. They have a young team, but that’s fine with Dunn.

“I’ve been involved in the game at different levels, so being able to use the experiences that I’ve had and work with young kids to teach them some of the things I wish I had known in high school, that’s exciting to me,” Dunn said. “That’s the one thing that drew me back in, was just being able to work with the kids.”

▪ It was a memorable Wednesday afternoon for the Bushley family when BC High and Catholic Memorial met in a Catholic Conference matchup in West Roxbury. BC High senior righthander Charlie Bushley pitched to his younger brother, sophomore catcher Sam Bushley.

But here’s the twist. Adam Bushley, Sam’s twin, plays left field for CM. So on two occasions, Charlie pitched to Sam with Adam at the plate. In the first at-bat, Charlie struck out Adam on three fastballs. But in the second at-bat, Charlie plunked Adam in the head (by accident), which will surely be a topic of discussion at their Cohasset home.

▪ No. 14 Hanover received a pair of standout pitching performances from Owen Kennedy and Gabe Knudsen to open the season. A senior righthander, Kennedy fired a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Plymouth South before Knudsen, a Globe All-Star last spring as a junior, fanned 14 over six two-hit innings in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over No. 8 Plymouth North . . . Two-time Division 1 runner-up Franklin has lost six regular-season games the last two seasons. The Panthers started 1-2, but got back on track Wednesday with a 6-2 win at top-ranked Taunton. Jake Shaughnessy pitched 6⅔ innings of two-run ball to earn the win and Rex Cinelli slapped two hits and scored a run . . . . Dover-Sherborn’s Brian Olson and Wellesley’s Luke Miele each hit three home runs Wednesday . . . North Andover righthander Cole Mullen threw six no-hit innings Wednesday as the Scarlet Knights topped Westford, 2-0, to grab for a key nonleague win.

Games to watch

Saturday, No. 2 BC High at No. 1 Taunton, 1 p.m . — The top two teams in the Globe’s Top 20 square off for an early-season showdown. Taunton won the last matchup, 3-2, in the D1 quarterfinals in June.

Tuesday and Thursday, Brad Martin Tournamant, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m . — Host Plymouth North and Division 1 contender Bridgewater-Raynham headline the field. They could meet in Thursday’s championship if both survive semifinal matchups against Dartmouth (B-R) and Silver Lake (PN).

Tuesday and Thursday, Sully Tournament, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. — This tournament at Adams Field in Quincy features Milton, Foxborough, North Quincy, and Quincy. Two-time reigning Division 2 champion Milton won the title last spring.

Wednesday, Catholic Memorial at No. 5 Franklin, 11 a.m . — CM ace Brett Mulligan is one of the state’s top pitchers, and could face Panthers lefty Austin Campbell for a phenomenal pitching duel.

Wednesday, No. 19 Walpole at No. 18 King Philip, 3:45 p.m. — Two of the best teams from the Bay State Conference and Hockomock League meet for an intriguing nonleague tilt.
