This is 100% worth the time and effort.. Man we made morning reservation and almost cancelled we were just tired! But we went and soooo Glad we did. It was def a little wavy on this day, we are first timers but the snorkeling was incredible. The crew is welcoming and easy to get along with. This is a great family activity. Capt Britto and Collin are professional, competent, knowledgeable, make ya feel safe and are very easy to talk, Collin is super friendly, great w kids and adults, funny and interesting. He has high energy, super supportive, learns everyones name. He makes ya feel like You've been doing this together for years. Don't pass this opportunity up to Memories. I'd do it again!

Photo of Michael A.

We used Sea Experience for part of my Deep Diver training and have to say the team from Sea Experience was fantastic. Capt. Harrison and Britto were very thorough on their briefings and did a lot of good behind-the-scenes work to keep my class and the rest of the boat safe and only having to focus on our dives. Check them out if your in the Ft Lauderdale area!!

Photo of Heather S.

Captain Britto was great! Our guide Collin was absolutely amazing. I've snorkeled all over the Caribbean and I'd have to say, this was probably my favorite because of how fun the experience was. I can't wait to come back and do it again!

10/10. Best of both worlds experience. Glass bottom sections of the boat enable you to see clear to the reef or get a little adventurous and jump in. Would do this every time we come to FTL.

Sea Experience is my go to dive location in the area. Their dive profiles are pretty standard, a 70-80' wreck dive first, followed by a shallow reef drift dive. From time to time this gets changed up with a 3rd reef dive or reef cleanup, so be sure to check where they're going. The operation is well run, the dives are well briefed and the expectations are set in advance. I appreciate the snacks and sodas and the opportunity meet divers from around the area. Of the half dozen or so trips I've taken, I've never had an entirely negative dive. Even one where the current was so strong that we had to just hang on mean the fish didn't want to fight it either and the goliath grouper was hanging out in the wreck, 5' away from me. I'll be back for sure.

Thanks for taking the time to give us this nice review. We appreciate it. Hope we see you again and have a chance to earn that 5th Star. Sincerely, Bill

We had so much fun snorkeling with the crew today! Mike checked us in and was super friendly! They supply everything you'll need and explain the procedures for everything really well. MAKE SURE YOU ARRIVE EARLY! Basically if you listen to them you'll be good to go and have more fun because everyone can get in the water quicker! We saw a ton of different kinds of fish and even fed them a few Cheetos Even if you're not a strong swimmer you have the option to get a noodle and everyone wears a self inflating device! It was cold on the boat so I was glad we brought towels! If you sit in the front you will most likely get soaked. Special thanks to Alex who made our trip so memorable! Super friendly and overall very positive dude. You guys are truly losing an awesome part of your team! We all wish him luck in Maryland! (Thanks for the sushi recommendation.)

We purchased a Go City pass for our trip, so we could just choose activities as we went. The all inclusive pass included a glass bottom boat tour and snorkeling trip. It said we needed to reserve ahead of time, so I called while we were still at the airport and had some downtime. We booked four days ahead of time because of a holiday week. The guy I spoke to was so friendly and so patient (because of the airport announcements in the background), and made sure I knew all sorts of awesome information to get us prepared for our trip. Make sure to do your waivers ahead of time (via email), because it's not just signing your name. Our trip was late to start because a family showed up late AND hadn't filled out their waivers. Day of: The marina is easy to find, it's actually also a water taxi stop if you are doing that while in town. We packed a lunch, but we ate it when we got back because the water was so choppy, that a lunch would not have been enjoyable. Just bring the essentials, as most things may get wet. Which is why there are no photos attached to this review. It really made me enjoy the moment. Lots of sunscreen, but make sure it is reef safe! We had THE BEST crew. Capt Joe and EJ were so down to earth and knowledgeable that you didn't feel silly asking questions or needing help. We had some kiddos on board with our group and their parents didn't go in the water. EJ helped them get acquainted with their equipment and settled into the snorkeling routine. The glass bottom part is kinda of "eh" because you don't see much until your at the dive site. But this was definitely a great experience!

Mike and Parker were great guides on the Glass bottom boat! Fun timel we all had a great time

We loved this snorkeling trip. Jason was a great guide and was ready for fun. He explained everything in detail for our snorkeling experience. Captain Mike was wonderful and took us to a good location to see all the ocean has to offer. Thank you for a great trip Mike and Jason

Photo of Joe T.

Had a great time snorkeling, just couldn't do it too long because the current was really rough. The captain spent a good amount of time trying to find calm waters, he just couldn't. So he went inland and found a nice spot for us to snorkel and jump of the boat. Will definitely be back when I'm in Fort Lauderdale

Why choose Intrepid

sea trip experience

Experienced skippers

Our skippers have years of experience sailing the high seas. There’s no one better to show you the ropes (literally).

See the best of your destination by land and by water.

Best of both worlds

These sailing vacations aren’t confined to the ocean blue. There’s plenty of time scheduled on land to see the sights and check out the local culture.

We make safety a priority on each of our sailing trips.

Safety first, always

Our yachts are well looked after and regularly maintained and on day one, the captain will also conduct a safety demonstration.

You don't need sailing experience to enjoy an Intrepid sailing tour.

No experience needed

If you'd like to pick up some sailing skills, your skipper can show you how. If not, just relax, kick back on deck and soak up some ocean breezes.

Sustainable travel

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Sailing highlights by country

A beach with white sand and turquoise water on the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Explore the unforgettable islands of Thailand

From the famous landscapes of Phang Nga Bay to the pristine beaches of Koh Phi Phi (and all of the remarkable islands in between), a sailing adventure through southern  Thailand  promises to produce some of your favorite travel memories ever. Relax on golden sand, take a dip in sparkling turquoise waters and cast your eyes upon natural wonders you’ve only ever seen photos of.

Woman kneeling next to a sea lion on a beach on Isla Isabela, Galapagos

Island hop your way through the Galapagos

There are some destinations in this world that were made for sailing, and the  Galapagos Islands  is one of them. Whether you want to spend your time spotting the islands’ diverse array of wildlife (think spiky marine iguanas and giant turtles) or simply relaxing on the boat with a drink in hand as the Pacific Ocean goes by, a boat tour around the Galapagos is sure to be one for the highlight reel.

A collection of pastel colored buildings on the coast of Naples in Italy

Get lost in the magic of Italy’s coast

Sailing your way down the  Italian  coast is guaranteed to be a unique adventure you’ll never forget, thanks to a variety of stops featuring pastel villages clinging onto rugged cliffsides, scattered ancient ruins from a lost empire, and tantalizingly blue waters you want to get lost in. From wandering through olive groves to laying out on pebbled beaches, cruise the sparkling Mediterranean at your leisure.

A boat cruising the turquoise Adriatic Sea in Croatia

Sail the Adriatic Sea around Croatia

On a trip to  Europe ,  Croatia  is a must-see, but when figuring out how best to explore this Mediterranean country, sailing is the way to go. Whether you want to wander through medieval towns, lose yourself in sparkling blue waters, explore lesser visited treasures or indulge in this epic country’s traditional cuisine, you’ll be in utter paradise from the minute to step foot onto your own private yacht – all aboard!

sea trip experience

In  Europe , we like to go classic. A single-hulled, 50-foot yacht gives you a taste of traditional Mediterranean sailing, not to mention it looks pretty spiffy in pictures too. A typical Intrepid vessel may come with three twin/double cabins, as well as a couple of single berths. You’ll have a recreation lounge, kitchen, three shared bathrooms and plenty of deck space for lazing around and looking fabulous.

sea trip experience

When it comes to sailing in  Asia , catamarans are the way to go. They’re smooth, comfortable, and nimble enough to reach those out-of-the-way cays and little island inlets. The twin hull means there’s plenty of space to stretch out –perfect for those balmy evenings and lazy afternoons. Most of the catamarans in our fleet have four twin/double cabins, three shared bathrooms, a galley (that’s nautical talk for kitchen) and a small living area. There are even kayaks and paddleboards for those that want to get a little active (and bean bags on deck for those that don’t!)

Intrepid sailing boat in Sardinia

Sailing COVID-19 requirements

Sailing faqs, do i have to help sail the boat.

You don’t have to lift a finger if you don’t want to (unless you need to turn the page of your novel or eat a grape). But if you’d like to learn the ropes, that’s fine too. Your expert skipper can teach you everything you’d like to know – from tying knots to unfurling the sails.

How much time is spent off the boat?

There’s about a 30/70 split between land-based and water-based activities on our Asia sailing trips. In Europe this is closer to 50/50 however, some evenings will be spent in port or a marina. Much of this depends on the weather conditions. There are usually at least a few hours each day spent exploring ports, trekking the surrounding areas or relaxing on beaches. Of course, depending on location, there will always be the chance to wine and dine at the local hot spots.

What will my fellow travelers be like?

We have travelers of all ages and nationalities sailing with us. Approximately 60% of our travelers are flying solo, followed by a mix of friend groups and couples. The minimum age of travelers on our trips is 18, or 15 if accompanied by an adult. We don’t have a maximum age as we believe those choosing a sailing adventure are like-minded regardless of age.

Who decides the rooming configuration?

Your skipper will allocate rooms on arrival to the boat. Single travelers will be paired up with another passenger of the same sex as per the gender marker on their passport, and this may mean sharing a double mattress or twin mattresses side by side.

What are the sleeping arrangements like?

This is our most common question! People are often hesitant about the idea of sharing a double mattress with another traveler of the same sex. Sailing boats tend to be very compact (we use real sailing boats), but the close-quarters nature of this travel is part of the adventure.

Sleeping quarters are designed to utilize the minimum amount of space in order to keep the communal areas as big as possible. In fact, lots of travelers end up sleeping out on deck under the stars, as it’s warm and there’s no air conditioning on a sailing boat.

Our boats have a mix of double, twin (two separate beds or two separate mattresses side by side) bunks, triple and quad cabins. Each trip will have further information about the sleeping arrangements in the Essential Trip Information.

Can I get a cabin to myself?

Single supplements are available on all trips, subject to availability. A single supplement is normally twice the regular price, however, where trips have inclusions such as meals there is a slight reduction in the supplement price. If you are interested in having a single supplement, please contact us to check availability and price.

Do the cabins have ensuites?

On many boats, bathroom facilities are shared, however, some boats have ensuites in each cabin that allow two people to share one bathroom. Our monohull yachts in Europe will have no more than two cabins sharing a bathroom. Most of our catamarans have four cabins and four bathrooms, however, these bathrooms are shared between travelers and crew. Check the Essential Trip Information of your trip for more specific details about your boat. Fresh and hot water is available for showers, and toilets are either electronic or hand-pump.

Will I get seasick?

Seasickness comes in a variety of forms. Common symptoms include fatigue, uneasiness, dizziness, and headaches. The majority of these symptoms usually subside after taking some time to adjust (usually a few hours to a day). Tylenol or Advil can help ease the transition. Heavy seasickness, characterized by vomiting, is uncommon, and it can be treated using medication. There are also a number of other self-management techniques you can try – such as sitting out in the fresh air, drinking ginger tea or watching the horizon.

For more information about beating seasickness, click here .

What will I eat?

Our Thailand sailing trips all feature an onboard chef who will prepare three delicious meals each day, plus snacks. In Europe, we operate with a trip kitty* that everyone contributes to. This is because there’s so much great local produce to taste in each place that it makes a lot of sense to buy food at each stop! This kitty will cover some of your food and beverage costs. On all our trips there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal at a local port – we’ll be able to show you where all the good tavernas are. Please check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details.

*See below for information about what a kitty is

What about alcoholic drinks?

You are welcome to drink on board - in fact, nothing enhances a sunset more than cold local beer or a glass of wine. Alcohol is BYO (bring your own), so make sure you buy what you need before departure. Some of our boats have alcoholic drinks on board that are available for purchase at local bar prices. Drinking water is free of charge.

How much luggage should I take?

Due to the compact size of the boats and the sometimes rocky nature of a sailing trip, it is advisable that you bring fabric/canvas luggage. It’s a good idea to pack light as there will usually be a gap between the boat and pier. While the skipper or a fellow traveler can give you a helping hand, you’ll need to be able to lift your bag onto the boat.

What should I pack?

Sailing trips are a little different to regular group tours. There’s a finite amount of space on the boat, so it’s best to leave the grand piano, pet llama and foldout four-person mattress at home. The same goes for bulky suitcases, ten pairs of shoes and the surfboard.

This isn’t designed to be a comprehensive packing list, but it’ll get you thinking like a real sailor.

  • A medium-sized fabric bag that can be flattened or stored easily
  • A small day pack for shore excursions
  • Some sandals or deck shoes that can get wet
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Seasickness tablets (just in case)
  • Bathing suit (don’t worry about the snorkel and fins – we provide those)
  • Waterproof camera (for those sweet underwater shots)
  • A light weatherproof jacket (just in case of high seas or seasonal showers)

For a more detailed packing list, please refer to the Essential Trip Information of your trip.

What are the arrival and departure times?

These will vary from trip to trip – be sure to check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details. Some sailing trips will head out to sea on the afternoon of the first day. Others will remain in port overnight, however, we still ask that you join the trip at the requested time, as the skipper will need to deliver a welcome and safety briefing. On our Europe trips the skipper will organise a visit to the supermarket after the meeting to buy provisions for the trip. All travellers will have an input into the provisions, which will be purchased from the kitty*.

Please note that due to sailing being a heavily weather-dependent activity, sometimes itineraries may need to change. We recommend allowing an additional night at the beginning and end of the trip to ensure nobody misses any onward flights.

*see ‘What is a kitty’ for more information

What is a kitty?

A kitty is a fund or pool of money that all travelers can choose to contribute to at the beginning of a trip. It’s not compulsory however, we’ve found pooling the group's money in one place makes it easier to arrange non-included group meals and tips where necessary. You'll usually eat most breakfasts and some lunches and dinners onboard the boat, so it's best to buy supplies from a nearby supermarket or grocery store at the beginning of each trip. For meals off the boat, our skippers will suggest locally-run restaurants that specialize in local produce and delicacies.

What is the maximum group size?

The maximum passenger capacity on our yachts changes depending on which country you are sailing. Here’s a quick breakdown, but you can always find more specific details in the essential trip information of each tour.

Greece: 8/11

Croatia: 8

Montenegro: 8

The Ultimate Guide To Deep Sea Fishing

We started Captain Experiences to make it easy to book fishing and hunting guides around the world. With over 1,500 Damn Good Guides, our platform makes finding and booking a trip seamless. Head here to check out our trips.

Deep sea fishing, also known as offshore fishing or big game fishing, involves venturing miles offshore where ocean depths can range from hundreds to thousands of feet deep. Annually, tens of thousands of anglers head to popular deep sea fishing destinations such as Key West , Galveston , and Gulf Shores in search of catching popular offshore species like yellowtail, albacore tuna, rockfish and more using specialized deep sea fishing rods and reels designed to put up with the power and speed of big game fish that lurk in the deep. In this guide, we’ll uncover everything you need to know before heading out on your next deep sea fishing trip including popular deep sea fishing destinations, targeted game fish, and the gear and techniques required to be successful on a deep sea adventure.

What is Deep Sea Fishing?

The primary characteristic of deep sea fishing is the depth at which it takes place — usually in waters that can reach hundreds or even thousands of feet deep. This requires specialized equipment, such as sturdy fishing rods, heavy-duty reels, and robust fishing lines capable of withstanding the immense pressure of the depths. If you’re new to deep sea fishing, enlisting the help of a deep sea fishing charter and professional guide with local knowledge of the waters can make for a less frustrating experience out on the water. One of the most exciting aspects of deep sea fishing is the diversity of fish species that can be encountered. Depending on the location and time of year, anglers may have the opportunity to catch a variety of prized game fish such as marlin, rockfish, albacore tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, snapper, grouper, yellowtail and shark. These species are known for their size, strength, and fighting ability, making the pursuit an exhilarating challenge for anglers of all skill levels.

Different Types of Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing encompasses a variety of techniques that cater to different fishing styles and target specific species. The proper technique for your next deep sea fishing adventure largely depends on the depth at which you’re fishing and the species you’re targeting. Below are three popular deep sea fishing techniques.

Trolling for Marlin and Tuna

Blue Marlin In Cabo

Trolling, a technique involving dragging baited lines or lures behind a moving boat, allows anglers to cover vast expanses of water effectively. It's ideal for attracting pelagic species like marlin, tuna, yellowtail, sailfish, and albacore, known to roam wide areas in search of prey. The lure's movement and vibration entice these species, making trolling a successful strategy for deep sea fishing.

Bottom Fishing for Rockfish and Snapper

Rockfish Caught In San Diego

Bottom fishing is a technique where baited hooks are dropped to the ocean floor, primarily targeting bottom-dwelling or demersal species such as rockfish, snapper, grouper, and cod that tend to inhabit reefs, wrecks, or other submerged structures. This strategy provides anglers with accurate depth control, effectively targeting specific habitats these species frequent.

Jigging for Amberjack and Yellowtail

Amberjack Caught In Clearwater

Jigging, a technique where a weighted lure is dropped vertically and jerked to mimic prey movement, is effective for attracting a variety of fish species, including amberjack, kingfish, and different types of tuna. The lure's movement simulates wounded baitfish, triggering the predatory instincts of species like amberjack and yellowtail, enticing them to strike.

Top Locations for Deep Sea Fishing

While there are plenty of deep sea fishing locations to choose from, some are set above the rest due to their proximity to deep water, local accommodations or seasonality. Below are a few popular deep sea fishing destinations for your next day on the water.

Galveston: An Oasis for Offshore Angling Enthusiasts

Located on the Gulf Coast of Texas, Galveston boasts a thriving fishing scene and easy access to productive offshore waters. The city's proximity to the Gulf of Mexico makes it a prime destination for deep sea fishing. Anglers visiting the area can enlist the services of local Galveston fishing charters to target a variety of species, including red snapper, king mackerel and amberjack.

Key West: The Angler’s Dream Destination

Situated at the southernmost tip of Florida, Key West is a premier deep sea fishing destination due to its proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Booking a trip with one of the many Key West fishing charters gains you access to targeting species such as sailfish, yellowtail and various types of tuna.

Gulf Shores: A Hotspot for Ocean Fishing Aficionados

Gulf Shores, located on the Alabama coast, offers access to the abundant waters of the Gulf of Mexico. With its white sandy beaches and ample fishing opportunities, the area attracts anglers from near and far. For those that are new to the area, working with top Gulf Shores fishing charters can help ensure you're headed to the right area in search of notable species such as red snapper, grouper and amberjack.

Popular Deep Sea Fishing Trips Around the World

Deep sea fishing is one of the most exciting types of fishing that gains you access to long battles at sea with pelagic species of fish that few see in person, but it also means you’re sacrificing your hard-earned time and money on a full or multi-day trip miles offshore. Below are 12 popular fishing trips that offer unmatched experiences with top-rated local deep sea fishing captains that know what it takes to give you the experience you’re looking for.

South Padre Island Deep Sea Fishing in South Padre Island

Half day destin offshore in destin, open ocean big game - 42' sea ray in miami, clearwater mixed bag trip in clearwater, 8 hour offshore trip in freeport, 4-8 hour fishing trip - 26’ c-hawk in wilmington, key west offshore action in key west, full day or half day trip in islamorada, pompano beach deep sea trip in pompano beach, 6 hour offshore - 40' key west in islamorada, tulum trophy hunt in tulum, san juan offshore - 42' egg harbour in caguas, deep sea fishing limits and regulations.

Deep sea fishing regulations and limits vary depending on the specific location, fishing grounds, and the governing authorities responsible for managing the fisheries. These regulations are crucial for maintaining sustainable fish populations, protecting vulnerable species, and ensuring a fair and equitable fishing experience for all anglers. It's important to note that specific regulations may change over time, and it's essential to consult local fishing authorities or the relevant fishery management organizations for the most up-to-date information.

Getting Prepared for Your Deep Sea Fishing Adventure

When planning a deep sea fishing adventure, having the right gear is essential for a successful and enjoyable experience. The gear you need can vary depending on the targeted species, location, and fishing techniques, but you will always need a fishing rod and reel, high-quality fishing line that match your targeted species and fishing method, lures or bait to attract your targeted species, and safety equipment such as life jackets, first-aid kits and signaling devices like flares and whistles.

When To Go Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing varies by location and season. Key West is optimal from November to April for sailfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi. Galveston deep sea fishing and Gulf Shores deep sea fishing are best in summer and fall for red snapper, king mackerel, and amberjack. San Diego offers year-round opportunities, with yellowfin and bluefin tuna in summer and fall, while dorado and yellowtail are abundant in the warmer months.
