Although all of Sedona is considered to be a vortex, there are specific sites where the energy crackles most intensely. The four best known Sedona vortexes are found at Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon—each radiating its own particular energy. Some are thought to produce energy flowing upward while at others the energy spirals downward, entering the earth.   Don’t be surprised to find people doing meditation, yoga or performing other rituals at vortex sites. Please be respectful. There are several companies, individual guides and healing practitioners that offer vortex tours. But everyone is welcome to visit on their own. All vortex sites are easily accessible and maps and directions are available at the visitor center. Show up with an open mind and see what happens.

There’s no denying that Sedona, Arizona, has a pull, an aura, an appeal that sets it apart from other tourist destinations. For many people, that draw goes beyond the gorgeous red rock views and countless recreational opportunities to another famous attribute: the centers of energy known as vortexes.

For decades, Sedona has been recognized as a destination rich with vortexes (also called the more correct term vortices) . Visitors travel from all over the world to experience the vortexes’ benefits — variously described as an uplifting feeling, a sensation of recharge, and a satisfying calmness.

The concept of vortex energy in Sedona is a belief held by many visitors and residents alike. These alleged energy centers are said to create a feeling of heightened spirituality, peace, and healing. While not scientifically proven, the serene landscapes and spiritual experiences in Sedona continue to attract those of us who are seeking unique and mystical energies.

Over the years, I have made dozens of trips to Sedona, and despite the ever-growing crowds and the often-clogged traffic, I always want to return. For me, it’s mostly about the stellar hiking and spectacular views , but who knows? It might also be the power of those vortexes pulling me back.

Based on my visits to all of the well-known vortexes as well as information from Sedona’s tourism website , here is everything you need to know about a visit to the Sedona vortexes.

6 Sedona Vortex Sites to See and Things To Know Before Visiting

What are the vortexes.

The Visit Sedona website describes the vortexes as “swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation, and self-exploration.” It adds that the vortex sites “are places where the earth seems especially alive with energy.”

The vortex sites are identified as spots of either upflow, inflow, or a combination of both.

Upflow spots — found at mountaintops, mesas, or scenic overlooks — are locations where the energy is flowing upward out of the earth and are said to create positive, uplifting, and rejuvenating sensations.

Inflow sites feature energy flowing inward to the earth and are typically found in canyons, caves, valleys, and low-lying areas. The inflow sites are known to have a calming effect and are good spots for introspection and meditation.

Where Are They Located?

The vortexes are spread all over the Sedona area, from West Sedona to the Village of Oak Creek to the Oak Creek Canyon area. Because Sedona is a relatively small town of about 10,000, the well-known vortexes are all fairly close to one another. A map is available on this PDF .

Here are four of the most famous Sedona vortexes.

1. Boynton Canyon

For me, a trek through Boynton Canyon encapsulates the best of Sedona, as it passes by a series of amazing red-rock buttes before heading up a lovely forested box canyon.

On my recent January hike, the canyon felt like a secret garden, with faded gold and pink leaves still clinging to tree branches and bluebirds flitting from tree to tree. The actual vortex site is stunning, with canyon walls rising all around.

The Boynton Canyon hike is known as a combination inflow/upflow site. Note that while the Coconino Forest website rates the hike as an easy 5-mile round-trip, my cell phone clocked it at closer to 6.5 miles round-trip. The last half-mile or so is more on the strenuous side, with some scrambling up rocks required in the final ascent. The hike takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Boynton Canyon is located in West Sedona and can be reached by taking Dry Creek Road off Highway 89A. Parking is available in a trailhead lot with a fee . Pit toilets are available at the trailhead.

Pro Tip: For guests at the nearby upscale Enchantment Resort , a spur trail is available from the resort to the Boynton Canyon Trail.

2. Sedona Airport Loop

For a pure upflow experience, the Sedona Airport Loop is located right in the middle of Sedona, off Highway 89A and Airport Road. You will find the trailhead about a half-mile up the steep Airport Road.

The trail circles the upper slope of Airport Mesa (Table Top Mountain), offering great red rock views. It begins as a mostly level hike and then transitions to a moderate climb. The vortex site can be found on the main overlook, accessed via the half-mile Table Top Trail spur. The loop, including the spur, totals about 4.3 miles and takes about 2.5 hours to complete.

Pro Tip: For great views without the hike, the Sedona Airport Overlook offers a parking area, with a small fee, where you can take in a panorama of all of Sedona.

3. Bell Rock

Another pure upflow experience is available at Bell Rock — the massive bell-shaped red butte visible all over the Village of Oak Creek. The 3.6-mile Bell Rock Pathway offers close-up views of the horizontal layers that make up the rock formation.

Bell Rock’s strongest vortex energy is said to be felt on the butte’s north slope. Experts advise that it is not necessary to get to the top of Bell Rock to feel the vortex energy, and most people feel uplifting experiences on the first or second level. Visit Sedona suggests, “Follow trails up Bell Rock to the level that feels right for you.” The trail is considered easy to moderate and should take about 2.5 hours to complete.

Parking is available at North and South Trailheads, and a Red Rock Pass is required for parking at both.

4. Cathedral Rock

There are many ways to access Cathedral Rock, the iconic grouping of rock buttes and spires seen all over Sedona. To take in the vortexes, Visit Sedona suggests either the saddle of Cathedral Rock for an upflow/inflow combination or the inflow spot at the Red Rock Crossing.

The saddle of the soaring cathedral-like rock spires is accessible along the Cathedral Rock Trail , deemed “more a rock climb than a hike” by the Coconino National Forest’s website. Although the hike is relatively short at about 1.5 miles round-trip, it is steep and difficult in places, including a scramble up a rock cleft with a few toeholds notched into the rock. Still, the views at the top are splendid. The hike can be accessed off Highway 179 and Back O’ Beyond Road.

Another vortex option at Cathedral Rock is available at the inflow spot at the Red Rock Crossing , which can be accessed via Highway 89A and the Upper Red Rock Loop Road. Follow signs to the Red Rock Crossing/Crescent Moon Day Use Area. Parking is available for a fee.

5. Chapel of the Holy Cross 

Many say the Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex is the strongest Sedona vortex experience of them all. It’s actually a small chapel built into the beautiful Sedona red rocks. If you’re an architecture lover, the Chapel of the Holy Cross might just be the most interesting building in all of Sedona.

Many people report a sense of personal growth and joy which aims to make a deep connection to the spirit and Earth’s energy. The electromagnetic vortex energy of this Sedona vortex also emits love, harmony, and oneness to unify all that visit. Apart from reflection, the awesome panorama and the towering cross offer incredible photo opportunities in all directions.

6. Courthouse Butte Vortex 

Located just east of Bell Rock Vortex and north of the Village of Oak Creek, Courthouse Butte Vortex is known to locals as the spot for deep transformation and spiritual growth. The powerful vortex energy felt at this vortex site is grounding, healing, and extremely therapeutic.

Exuding an aura of mystery, native history, and exploration, this Sedona vortex is an ideal area for Shamanic practices, such as drumming, chanting, or ceremonies.  With several route variations to suit all abilities, Courthouse Butte Trail is also a terrific family-friendly hike.

Why You Should Visit

Although opinions vary about the vortexes’ benefits, people who swear by them say the energy has a centering influence. So, if you’re embarking on a path of self-improvement, a trip to the vortexes would be a great way to kick it off.

I have also noticed that the vortexes are popular spots for women on girls’ trips. On my recent hike into Boynton Canyon, I passed by two different groups of four to five women on their way back from the vortex — all beaming from the experience.

Not only are the vortex hikes beautiful and invigorating, but they also provide the opportunity for a bit of peaceful meditation.

The Best Time To Visit

Sedona is a year-round tourist destination, but crowds tend to be the largest from spring through the fall. During the warm, sunny weather of the spring and fall (with average highs in the 70-to-80-degree range), traffic can become a problem — especially during spring break and fall colors.

Summer is also beautiful in Sedona, with the red rocks glowing against the deep-blue Arizona sky. Average high temperatures in June and August reach the high 90s, though, and 100 degrees in July. Because of frequent summer monsoon rainstorms, it is crucial to get out on the trails early in the summer months and plan to be done midday.

To avoid at least some of the crowds, Sedona tourism suggests visiting in the winter months, when temperatures are still mild, with average highs in the 60-degree range. But even then, try to time your trip for mid-week, and get out on the trails early in the morning.

Tips For Experiencing The Vortexes

1. jeep tours are available to some vortexes.

If you prefer a four-wheeling adventure, some of the vortex energy sites are available on jeep tours that traverse Sedona’s rugged terrain to get visitors to the sites, or at least nearby. Earth Wisdom Jeep Tours offers a Scenic Vortex Jeep Tour that includes an introduction to “the facts, feeling, and fallacies of Sedona’s vortex energy spot lore,” according to the tour’s website, and will take you to at least two vortices. The Pink Jeep Adventure Tours offers a Touch the Earth Tour that allows visitors to experience the calming nature of Mystic Vista or Airport Mesa.

2. Don’t Try To Do It In One Day

If it is your goal to visit all of the famous vortex sites, it’s probably best to split them up between 2 or 3 days. Several of the Sedona hikes are fairly strenuous and can take 2 to 3 hours to complete.

3. Easier Options Are Available

Drive-in or easy-hiking access to vortexes is also available at popular Sedona sites such as the Oak Creek Canyon overlook on Highway 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff ; the Chapel of the Holy Cross off Highway 179 and Chapel Road; and the gorgeous West Fork Trail located along the Oak Creek Canyon scenic drive.

Although Sedona is the most famous spot for vortexes in Arizona, the centers of energy are also known to exist on the state’s West Coast near the Colorado River community of Lake Havasu City. The GoLakeHavasu website notes that the community boasts five vortexes of its own.

Cathedral Rock is one of our favorite places to hike in Sedona. While the hike involves some elevation gain and scrambling over rocks, it is relatively short and manageable, even for young children. My twins hiked to the top with some assistance when they were four years old.

The top offers spectacular views, including some large drop-offs, so we advise you to use some caution. Watching the sunset from the top of Cathedral Rock vortex is a beautiful experience, but make sure to bring a headlamp for a safe descent during low light conditions.

Boynton Canyon Trail 

This trail is home to the Boynton Canyon Vortex, famous for its enchanting caves and powerful energy. This scenic trail allows hikers to explore the captivating canyon and Subway Cave while enjoying a relatively flat stroll through the desert landscape.

With stunning views of the area and a rewarding climb to a viewpoint at the end, Boynton Canyon Trail offers a memorable 6.3-mile hike with a modest elevation gain, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a connection to the vortex energy in Sedona.

The hike along the canyon trail is pretty easy and a trail that my kids and I enjoyed. The hike up into the Subway Cave is a little more difficult and can be harder to find. However, the views in the cave are really cool and worth the effort to find.

West Fork Trail 

The West Fork Trail in Sedona offers a pleasant 6-mile out-and-back hike along Oak Creek, providing a great option for those seeking a scenic trail with water elements. With ample shade from trees and opportunities to cool off in the water, this trail is particularly enjoyable during warmer temperatures.

Surrounded by impressive canyon walls carved by water erosion and adorned with vibrant fall foliage, this popular trail within the Coconino National Forest showcases the natural beauty of Sedona. Additionally, hikers have the flexibility to turn around at any point, making it possible to appreciate the trail’s splendor without completing the entire route.

Bell Rock 

Bell Rock in Sedona is an ideal vortex site to explore, especially for families with children, offering a fantastic hiking experience and captivating rock formations. Kids will have a blast climbing and exploring this moderate trail, which doesn’t require covering long distances to reach the highlights.

Additionally, families can opt for the enjoyable trail around the base of Bell Rock Vortex and Courthouse Butte, providing a fun and easy opportunity for children to run, explore, and immerse themselves in the natural beauty.

This is one of my kids’ favorite hiking trails in Sedona because they can climb and explore all over Bell Rock.

The parking area can be limited due to its popularity, so it’s advisable to arrive early at the trailhead for a convenient experience.

Schnebly Hill Road 

Schnebly Hill Road is a fantastic option for families seeking outdoor exploration. It provides a scenic and adventurous route for off-road enthusiasts and nature lovers.

With access to camping spots near Sedona, this approximately 12-mile dirt road offers breathtaking views, shaded campsites, and opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and picnicking.

Airport Mesa 

Located just minutes from downtown Sedona on Airport Road, Airport Mesa is a popular destination for watching the sunset and enjoying panoramic views. This 3-mile loop trail offers a convenient and easily accessible hiking experience in downtown Sedona, providing beautiful views of Cathedral Rock, Mogollon Rim, and West Sedona.

Courthouse Butte 

With its towering presence and unique red rock formations, Courthouse Butte provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities and exploration. Courthouse Butte Loop, a 4-mile hike around the base of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, offers an easy and enjoyable experience for families. It’s one of the best things to do with kids in Sedona .

While parking can be a challenge due to its popularity, patience usually pays off with a parking spot. This leisurely hike offers a chance to explore and enjoy the beauty of Sedona, with ample opportunities for kids to run, stack rocks, and have fun, especially once you venture away from the crowded Bell Rock area.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the most iconic pictures from the area. It is a remarkable architectural gem nestled in the red rocks of Sedona, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Sedona Verde Valley and Cathedral Rock.

The rock formation known as Kachina Woman rises like an obelisk out of a cool green canyon. At its base, more than three dozen women are tucked into crevices in the rust-colored stone, their faces turned toward the warm Arizona sun. Some sit with their legs crossed. Others are curled into a fetal position. They did not all come together, but they came for the same purpose: to soak up the energy of one of the most popular vortexes in Sedona.

Surrounded by towering mesas and spectacular vistas, and located on the ancestral home of the Yavapai people, the small town of Sedona has long been a destination for New Age seekers and the astrologers, psychics, tarot readers, shamans and healers who cater to them. For the last 40 years, these spiritual pilgrims have been drawn to the region by tales of its mysterious and amorphous energy vortexes. Definitions vary, but Sedona’s vortexes are generally understood to be geographical sites of invisible and potent spiritual energy, usually associated with specific rock formations.

Books on the vortexes — what they are, where to find them and the unique energies you might experience at each one — line the shelves of the town’s many crystal shops and metaphysical bookstores. Visitors can choose from an array of vortex tours that might include a jeep ride, sound healing, guided meditation, yoga or all of the above.

But as spiritual tourism in Sedona continues to grow, the region’s most famous vortexes have become increasingly popular and crowded. Now, as traffic clogs the town’s thruways and trailside parking becomes nearly impossible to find, some longtime vortex guides say a new understanding of Sedona’s vortex energy — and how to tap into it — is needed.

“It feels good when someone can point to a spot and say, ‘This is it,’” said Dennis Andres, a.k.a. Mr. Sedona, and the author of “What Is a Vortex?” and the soon-to-be-released “Experience the Vortex.” “But it’s not a spot. The energy is everywhere in Sedona.”

Big vortex energy

Historians trace Sedona’s New Age roots to the late 1950s when a handful of local women interested in metaphysics began hosting meditations in their homes, but the spiritual history of the land extends much further back in time. This red rock country, where massive rock formations rise like monuments from the landscape, is sacred to the Yavapai people, who were forced to leave in 1875, and who don’t believe in vortexes.

“I call it a tourist trap because it’s really overcrowded,” said Gertrude Smith, Yavapai culture director for the Yavapai-Apache Nation. “But for us, it’s a very important part of our people, and our history. A lot of our creation stories come out of that area.”

Each February, members of the nation hold a gathering in the Sedona area to pay tribute to what they call “the Great Exodus,” when the band was forced to trek 240 miles southwest across rugged terrain to another reservation. Many elders and babies died on the journey. Before the ceremony, members of the community go up to the site to clear the land of the medicine wheels, crystals and other talismans that are inevitably left by New Age seekers.

“I know for them that’s their belief, that they want to believe in something,” Smith said. “But these are our sacred sites and it makes our medicine man upset.”

How to visit Sedona without being a jerk

Red Rocks Country has long beckoned weekend travelers from L.A. But many locals believe tourists are loving their town to death.

Yavapai religious practices have little to do with the four, seven or nine vortex locations (depending on what map you consult) that spiritual tourists seek today. These sites, which are all conveniently accessible via short trails near parking lots, were named in 1980 by psychic channeler Page Bryant and popularized by California psychic and self-help guru Dick Sutphen. The most famous are Airport Mesa (great for sunsets), Bell Rock (shaped like a bell), Cathedral Rock (which glows when the sun hits it) and Boynton Canyon (home to caves and ancient dwellings).

When Bryant identified the vortex locations, she also labeled each one as electric, magnetic or electromagnetic. The names were meant to be symbolic. Electric vortexes are believed to give off a stimulating and uplifting energy, while magnetic vortexes are said to offer a more receptive, focused and grounding energy. Electromagnetic vortexes are a combination of both. However, individuals’ experiences of the vortexes are often more varied than that.

Gail Brown, a grandmother from Long Island who was among the women meditating at Kachina Woman in Boynton Canyon (electromagnetic vortex), said she felt peaceful and grounded during her time there, as if a calming energy was emanating from the Earth. Her sister Lynn Debaw, a retired gym teacher celebrating her 80th birthday, described it as a more spiritual feeling of opening and awakening in her heart.

LeeAnn Rigau, a retired teacher from Virginia, said that for her, the ground around the Bell Rock vortex (electric) felt spiked with a powerful current. “I was lying on bare rock, but when I put my arms down it felt like I was lying on six inches of grass because of the energy shooting up around my arms,” she said.

At the Courthouse vortex (magnetic), Anjuli Mahendra, who teaches yoga and massage in the Bay Area, said the energy felt earthy, downward and slow. “I felt like I was in a womb,” she said.

And then there are people who don’t feel anything at all.

“This isn’t going to work for me,” said a woman from Maryland who declined to give her name, watching incredulously as a retreat group engaged in spontaneous movement and dance to process the messages they had received from the vortex at Boynton Canyon. “I guess you have to be a believer.”

But even as she joked with her husband about “scrambling the energies” by taking a selfie, she also marveled at the majesty of the landscape around her — the red rocks carved by the elements over millions of years, the bright green of the forest below, the expansive blue sky.

“It is beautiful,” she said, the sarcasm draining from her voice. “I’m soaking up the beauty.”

There are people who will tell you that the energy of Sedona’s vortexes is measurable, that it is amplified by a bed of quartz that rests beneath the ground, that it can affect your brain waves and lower your blood pressure, that it is connected to the intersection of ley lines, which are lines of energy that some believe crisscross the Earth. But an open-minded skeptic might find a different take on the vortex easier to swallow.

“The word ‘vortex’ is a simplified one-word label for a place that makes it easier to do prayer, mind-body healing, meditation, tapping higher consciousness, or oneness with the infinite,” said Pete A. Sanders Jr., a founding board member of the Sedona Metaphysical Spiritual Assn. and author of “Scientific Vortex Information.”

“But it’s easier to say, ‘Go to the vortex,’” he said.

The Hollywood Hills are a vortex too?

Sanders, who has a trim white beard and a math teacher vibe (he keeps his phone in a case clipped to his belt), has been teaching people to work with vortex energy — what he calls “the vortex effect” — since 1980. But in recent years his perspective on these sites has evolved. He still believes that the conditions in Sedona are among the best in the world for creating the energy that supercharges prayer, meditation and mind-body healing — he attributes it to the inspiring greens and reds of the landscape — but he argues that Sedona does not have a monopoly on the phenomenon.

At the weekly vortex talks he gives at hotels around town, he teaches visitors not only how to tap into the energy of Sedona’s vortex sites but also how they can seek that energy closer to their own homes. “Being inspired by a hillside you see or a nature picture can do it,” he said. “Pyramidal topography is an upflow vortex. The visual pulls you up.”

The Hollywood Hills are a vortex, said Sanders, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley. So is Griffith Observatory. So are the San Gabriel Mountains and the Santa Monica Mountains.

“We love having people’s tourist money here,” he said. “But if people never come to Sedona, they can still have a vortex experience.”

While this perspective is not universally accepted among Sedona’s vortex tour guides, many agree that a focus on just a handful of sites misses the point.

Banah Winn, a musician, sound healer and vortex guide who moved to Sedona from Los Angeles in May, said there are 60 different vortex sites in Boynton Canyon alone. He’s been to 10. And while he doesn’t think there are any Sedona-level vortexes in L.A., he said the Self-Realization Fellowship’s Lake Shrine in the Pacific Palisades comes close.

Andres said that after 18 years of leading vortex tours in the area, he has concluded that seeking out a handful of specific and overly crowded locations will only lead visitors to disappointment.

To get the most out of Sedona, visitors should expect to take an active role in the spiritual experience they hope to have rather than just sitting at the base of a red rock and waiting for a miracle, he said. Show up with an open mind; show up with an intention. Do a meditation. Join a retreat.

“What’s more interesting to me, and what’s happening now, is helping people connect with this energy,” said Andres. “Instead of being passive, how can they be intentional?”

Tune in, relax and surrender

Kim Sieb, a former national park ranger turned vortex tour guide and spiritual healer, became the owner of Sedona Mystical Tours in 2020 after the former owner approached her at a trailside parking lot. He had been told by an astrologer and psychic that she would be his successor.

On a recent Wednesday she met three people who had signed up for a two-hour vortex tour ($200 for the first person, $75 for each additional person) at the trailhead of Courthouse Vista. It was 8 a.m. and the parking lot was already full.

Dressed in tan pants and tan lace-up moccasins with a pale blue shawl wrapped around her shoulders, she walked for a quarter of a mile before stepping off the path. Standing beneath a twisted juniper tree, she spritzed the attendees, including me, with a fragrance she made herself from native plants. She encouraged us to breathe deeply and imagine ourselves rooting into the ground. Then she held a tuning fork over our heads.

The day was beautiful, crisp and bright, but I found it hard to focus. Whether that’s because of the energy coming from nearby Bell Rock (an electric vortex), the steady stream of other hikers walking by or the sudden and uncontrollable coughing fit that seized me just then, I leave it to you to decide.

I felt much better after we made our way to another clearing near Courthouse Rock, which is said to be a magnetic vortex. After warning us to be careful not to step on the biodynamic crust that is essential to Sedona’s ecosystem, Sieb spread out blankets on a sandy wash and invited us to lie down for a sound healing.

The sun was warm but not yet hot, and the ground was more yielding than I expected. Sieb began by hitting a wide flat drum above us that I felt reverberating in my chest. Then she began to gently strike the Tibetan bowls she’d placed around our heads and on our bellies.

As she led us in a meditation, I felt myself relax further and further, maybe more than I ever had. She told us to imagine that the Earth was rising up to meet our bodies just as our bodies were reaching down toward the Earth. That there was iron in the red rock all around us just as there is iron in our blood. That water was moving in pathways beneath the ground where we were lying, just as it moves in pathways through us.

I felt a terrific sense of surrender and merging into the Earth, and a very strong impulse not to move from this spot ever again. Later, I would describe it as “sticky.”

I felt this same stickiness that evening, watching the sunset at Airport Mesa, and again when I tucked myself into a crevice at the bottom of Kachina Woman after the other meditators had left. I felt it again when I woke up early on my last day in Sedona and watched the sun light up Cathedral Rock.

Some might say it was the scenery. Some might say I was just tired. Some might say it was the vortexes.

I say, who knows?

What is a Vortex?

Depending on who you ask, you may get an array of answers. Basically, a vortex is an area of high energy. Think of the swirling energy of a tornado or dust devil or the way water spirals while going down a drainage. The vortex is approximately halfway up Airport Road, and the parking lot is on the left. Getting to Cathedral Rock Vortex (believed to be at saddle 2) is an adventure in itself. The trail starts at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead , leads to a plateau, and then continues to cairns that ascend the rock. The trail requires scrambling up various heavily worn rocks. Follow the basket cairns along the trail to keep on track.

Simply keep to the right of the large rock and turn left at the "end of trail" sign to reach the second saddle. After soaking in the atmosphere and energy, head to the top, where the magic is.

A Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required to access this trail. Parking is not permitted at the Cathedral Rock trailhead from Thursday through Sunday, so visitors can leave their cars at the designated park-and-ride in Sedona and use a free shuttle service .

Since the chapel is always packed with visitors, it is not for those seeking solitude or serenity but views and spirituality.

The Boynton Vortex, commonly referred to as the Kachina Woman Vortex, is located in Sedona's famed Boynton Canyon. It is a holy spot for the Yavapai-Apache people, as well as a place to experience the balanced energy of both the feminine and masculine vortexes.

From the Boynton Canyon Trailhead , follow the Boynton Canyon Trail , which is among the most beautiful Arizona hikes, according to AllTrails . Follow the Vista Trail through the canyon. Until now, accessing the Kachina Woman Vortex was very simple. It then briefly rises to some slick rock stairs.

The slick rock climb along the vortex site is the most challenging portion of this hike, although not tough. After getting there, experience the balanced energy of the vortex amid the serene and scenic setting of Boynton Canyon.

Sedona is the kind of place that I think everyone should see at least once.

It is a peaceful small town in central Arizona, awash with vibrant red rocks and a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix or Tucson . With a population of around only 10,000 people, it’s a great place to take things slow.

Sedona is well known for its nature. Breathtaking and colorful landscapes surround the hiking trails, and mountain biking is a popular sport here. in fact, Sedona’s outdoorsy side is one of its main draws.

But, Sedona is also known for its art and culture, and for its health and wellness-vibe. Energy vortexes, art galleries, and spiritual experiences abound.

All of these options feel extra peaceful due to the incredible panorama surrounding you.

Here are all of the must see places, can’t-miss attractions, and unique things to do in Sedona, Arizona!

1) Go off-roading on a Jeep tour.

Sedona’s iconic red rocks are nothing short of unforgettable.

One of the best ways to experience the natural wonders of Sedona is to take the famous Red Rock West Jeep Tour . It is one of the most unique ways to see the colorful rocks and valleys up close.

On this 2-hour jeep tour, your professional guide will drive off-road through seven hard-to-access canyons in Sedona. You’ll learn about the history of the area, from early settlers to wild cowboys.

One of the most interesting parts for me is learning the geology of the wildly shaped rock formations. Round trip transport is provided.

I can’t recommend this tour enough! It is the best way to truly explore Sedona’s unique landscape and things to do if you don’t have your own 4WD vehicle.

2) Hit the Sedona hiking trails.

Undeniably, Sedona’s natural beauty is profound.

The red rock behemoths jutting out from the floor are mesmerizing. While there is a never-ending plethora of trail options to choose from, here are a few of my favorites.

Pro Tip: Don’t hike in the desert without proper preparation! I highly recommend wearing a wide-brim hat , a quality hydration pack , and these lightweight trekking sandals . I own each of these and they go with me to basically any desert.

For anyone craving and easy Sedona hike with an epic view, check out Secret Slick Rock Trail. If you visit in the summer, this trail is not too strenuous and provides such a great view of Cathedral Rock in the distance. Get more info on hiking this trail here .

Alternately, Devil’s Bridge is a huge natural sandstone arch within the Coconino National Forest. The trail is a 3.9 mile moderate out and back hike, with one steep climb toward the end.

The early portion of the trail travels through washes filled with juniper and prickly pear cacti throughout the year. Photos don’t do it justice! But be forewarned, this one is popular and gets quite crowded.

Another great option is the short 2 mile Birthing Cave hike. This moderate out and back trail is heavily trafficked and quite popular!

This cave is a sacred site so please pack in and pack out any trash or water bottles you may be carrying. The reward of this hike is a panoramic view from a shaded cave.

Hiking in this area is one of the most unique things to do in Sedona due to how iconic the rocks are here. You can’t miss them.

3) Do some sunrise yoga and meditation in nature.

If disconnecting with your busy life and reconnecting to nature sounds good to you, consider taking this Sunrise Yoga, Hiking and Meditation Tour .

Burning Tree Cellars specializes in small and unique batches and does not distribute to third-party outlets. So, the only way to taste their wine is to visit their tasting room. You can come taste these artfully crafter wines in the town of Cottonwood.

Passion Cellars is another well-known winery in the area, and is family-run. Passion Cellars has won awards for producing deliciously complex wines. The winery is located in the quirky town of Jerome.

Prefer to take a tour? That’s a great way to both learn more about the wines of Sedona and avoid driving after wine tasting.

In the park, there are not only two Buddhist stupas to rotate clockwise around, but also icons and elements of other faiths, too. It is a superb place for quiet meditation and peaceful contemplation.

7) Take a dip at Slide Rock State Park.

Nestled in the heart of Oak Creek Canyon sits Slide Rock State Park – a scenic natural area full of rugged land and rushing water.

While hiking is a popular activity here year round, I would personally recommend Slide Rock State Park as a good summertime respite from the heat. Visitors can swim in the creek to cool down and play in the sun.

Slide Rock is a great spot for swimming and fishing, and wildlife like rainbow trout, white-tailed deer and eagles are regularly spotted here.

The park’s name comes from the popular “Slide Rock”, which is an 80-foot stretch of slick orange creekbed that forms a natural water slide straight into the creek. Super fun!

8) Explore the Palatki Heritage Site.

The Palatki Heritage Site is an archaeological site within the Coconino National Forest. In the Hopi language, Palatki means ‘red house’, and undoubtedly refers to the red cliff dwellings that date back to between 12th and 14th century.

This site reminds me of a mix between Montezuma’s Castle , which you might be lucky enough to visit while in Arizona, and the stone structures built inside of Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

There are three easy trails at Palatki Heritage Site. The first takes you up to the Sinagua cliff dwellings. The second leads you to an impressive viewpoint of the dwellings. And, the third leads to the alcoves that house early pictographs from not just one but every native culture to ever occupy the Verde Valley.

11) Visit the Sedona Heritage Museum.

Whether or not you’re into history, the Sedona Heritage Museum has a lot to offer.

Visitors will learn about the regional history of Sedona, nd have the opportunity to attend events and educational exhibitions. All of this takes place inside of a historic, preserved family farmstead.

The Museum is focused on the lifestyles and works of the people who pioneered this community, from 1876 to the present. Learning about both rugged ranchers and Hollywood cowboys under one roof is a treat.

I have to admit, in a less-theatric way, the Heritage Museum reminded me a bit of Tombstone – a historic city in southern Arizona outside of Tucson .

12) Check out Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village

As a creative person myself, I love exploring these small arts and craft villages in many of the towns and countries I visit. A walk through Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village is a great way to spend an afternoon in Sedona!

Galleries and independent shops line the cobblestone streets, and there are plenty of unique souvenirs available. Oftentimes, you can watch artists create their works on site, which always adds to the experience

And, the ambience is calm and bright, with lots of greenery and plant life surrounding you. Historic churches and rustic architecture adds to the appeal.

13) Experience a Sedona Energy Vortex.

One of the most unique things to do in Sedona is to experience one of its famous an energy vortexes.

People travel from far and wide to seek out the mysterious cosmic forces that are believed to emanate from the red rocks themselves. The four best known Sedona vortexes are found at Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Boynton Canyon

A Vortex is thought to be swirling center of energy that allows for healing, meditation and growth; where the air seems especially alive and electric. Many people feel uplifted and recharged after visiting a vortex.  

Expect to see yoga, meditation, and all forms of self-movement happening at these sites.

Easily accessible, each vortex can be found on a map available at the respective visitor center. Show up with an open mind and let me know how you feel when leaving!

14) Visit the Chapel Of The Holy Cross.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a popular Sedona attraction and in my opinion is one of the top must-see places. Religious or not, this chapel is a sight to see as it stands proudly among the surrounding rock formations.

This impressive church, built in the 1950s, is widely visited by locals and tourists alike. The best time to go is either early morning or midday, but be aware that it can get crowded as the day goes on.

You might even get to see the mysterious fog that rolls in through the surrounding rocks during the colder months. Midday, the sun shines directly through the stained glass windows, which created a colorful palette on the walls.

15) Stargaze under the dark sky.

It was while I lived in Arizona that I first experienced the true darkness of the desert sky. The stars were unbelievable – I could just begin to see how vast our skies really were!

And even if you opt not to book the UFO Tour mentioned above, you should still make it a point to see Sedona’s vast dark skies.

Sedona is one of only 20 certified  Dark Sky Communities  on the entire planet, so you know that the night sky is truly special here. Wow.

The city makes purposeful efforts to reduce light pollution, and there is a stark difference in comparison to other cities.

Pro Tip: A couple of notable spots for stargazing include the Two Trees Observing Area and the Centennial Trailhead – the latter of which will require a good headlamp to safely trek the one mile trail in the dark.

Bonus Tips for Visiting Sedona

• Remember to prepare for the heat if you visit Sedona in the summer. The proper hiking gear is essential for your safety .
• Public transportation is not the most abundant here, so I highly recommend booking a rental car for your visit. I always get the best prices here ! And a car will give you the most flexibility for sightseeing while in Sedona. If you would rather use Uber, that is an easy option, too.
• a headlamp for early morning hikes or late night stargazing.
• my favorite trekking sandals of all time, which have hiked on six continents so far.
• a trusty CamelBak hydration pack for hands free water access.
• Spend at least one full weekend exploring Sedona . There are just so many unique things to do in Sedona that it is very hard to cram everything into just one day!
• Lastly, if you are planning to hike, I highly recommend getting the Red Rock Pass. This will allow you to park at the trailheads for a low cost of $5 per day (or buy a weekly pass for $15).

Where To Stay in Sedona, Arizona

There are plenty of unique places to stay in Sedona to complement all of the fun things you do on your trip! I will list them in order of my personal preference.

1. Sky Ranch Lodge

The Sky Ranch Lodge is my top recommendation because it’s stunning grounds are nestled right in between the towering orange and red rocks.

This luxurious hotel offers concierge services, non-smoking rooms, and an outdoor swimming pool where you can enjoy the views. With the Chapel of the Holy Cross and other unique attractions within easy reach, you’ll be situated in a prime location.

Bonus: After a day of hiking, you can treat yourself to a relaxing soak in the on site hot tub.

2. Arabella Hotel Sedona  

The charming Arabella Hotel Sedona in Red Rock Country and just minutes away from Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, Oak Creek Canyon, and Slide Rock State Park – all mentioned above. It’s prime location is just part of the draw.

Enjoy the seasonal outdoor pool and year-round hot tub after your busy days exploring. Stay connected with free WiFi and enjoy plentiful in-room amenities like coffee makers, ironing facilities, and hairdryers for your convenience.

The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast and fitness center.

3. Lux Verde Hotel  

If you’re traveling on a budget or simply prefer to be away from the crowds, the basic yet comfortable Lux Verde Hotel is just for you.

Less than 30 minutes outside of Sedona, this hotel is fond in Cottonwood, which is much quieter. The hotel has a seasonal outdoor pool and a hot tub, free WiFi access, and free daily breakfast.

It is also closer to the wineries, so if that is a big draw for your trip then this may be a good area for you. Note, I only recommend staying here if you have your own transportation to and from Sedona.

When is the Best Time to Visit Sedona?

Lastly, since there is a lot to see outdoors here, we should also talk about when to visit.

Arizona is a desert. This means it is going to get hot at certain times of the year.

In the summer, Sedona’s temperatures regularly climb beyond 95°F (35°C). If that sounds miserable to you, then you may want to avoid visiting from around June to September. If that doesn’t scare you off, #1) you and I are BFF’s. #2) Please be advised on the desert hiking essentials if you plan to spend time outside!

The best times to visit Sedona in terms of comfortable weather would be either Spring (March through May) or Fall (October-November). The weather will be warm, but comfortably so, and the evenings will offer a nice reprieve.

Winter in Sedona is also a great option, though the nights can get down to freezing. Daytime highs average around 57°F (14°C) but rain (and even overnight snow!) is not unheard of.

Sedona’s vortex: Believe or not to believe

<Bell Rock is a famous rock formation that rises 500 feet into the air and is considered a vortex site. Its name comes from its bell-like shape.>

Dennis Andres first heard about the city of Sedona from his mother. The 26-year-old New Yorker was moving to Arizona to study at Thunderbird School of Global Management, and his mom, who traveled with him, requested to visit Sedona. While driving around, he pulled over at a rock formation called Bell Rock. Dennis was amazed by its beauty, so he got out of the car and ran up the rock. The higher he went, the better he felt. When he returned to the car, he saw his mother in tears. He asked her what was wrong, and she replied that she had never been so happy before.

“We asked people if something was happening in Sedona. And they would always respond it is the vortex. So I asked, what is a vortex? And every single person gave me a different answer. I made a vow that I would figure it out someday.” Years later, in 1995, Dennis Andres left his job as a financial consultant for the World Bank in Kazakhstan and moved permanently to Sedona, where he became a tour guide and a writer. Out of his four books, two are about the vortex: “What Is a Vortex?” (2009) and “Experience The Vortex” (2023). 

So, what is a vortex? Page Bryant, a psychic who lived in Sedona in the late 1970s and early 1980s, coined that term to refer to a place of energy. Bryant identified specific locations in the city (Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Airport Mesa, and Boynton Canyon) and claimed the energy was physical. However, she was not the first person to feel it. The psychic researcher Dick Sutphen went to Sedona before her and brought people to spiritual retreats. For Sutphen, it is a city with psychic energy. 

“What this energy is is the real question. Sedona is a place of spiritual energy. We cannot measure it with mechanical devices; we can only measure it with the human body. I can explain why some people feel this energy and others do not. You do not have to believe in it, and you do not have to reject it either,” states Dennis. 

Over the years, he has interviewed thousands of people to understand their experiences. Based on that informal research, he created the chart below, which is a predictive model of how someone would feel in Sedona. 

“There is no scientific evidence for a vortex. In fact, I am not even aware of a clear definition of it. People say energy but do not mention what kind they are referring to. Energy manifests itself in magnetism, heat, and radiation. They are all different forms of energy. People use that term without really understanding what it means. If they want to believe in it, that is fine. It is very good for tourism, which Sedona mostly lives on. However, as a scientist, I have not been made aware of any experiments or evidence that support the idea of a vortex”, affirms Dr. Steven Semken, a geologist and professor at the School Of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. 

Energy is defined by science. Dr. Semken explains it as the capacity to do work and make changes happen. “Energy exists, and it is exchanged among different forms. But it is conserved. You can not create it, make it, or destroy it. You can just convert it from one form to another. For instance, when you eat food, there is chemical energy in it. Your body digests the food, and that produces heat. That is heat energy,” he says. 

Since 2018, Brad has worked as a tour guide four days a week for half the year. Does he believe in vortexes? “They do not come up and hit you on the head and say: I am a vortex. I think you have to be open-minded because having an open mind in life is a good thing anyway.”

Brad has heard people talking about electromagnetism, magnetism from the Earth’s core, female energy, and male energy when describing a vortex. Although he believes these notions may be true, he knows there is no scientific proof of any of it. “All I can say is that sometimes I feel a chill or goosebumps. I do not know if that is a vortex energy, but it is some type of energy. So I just go with it. It might be the beauty of the rocks and surrounding areas. When someone says they feel something, I think that is remarkable. You can not tell that person they do not feel something because it is a personal experience. According to its official website, about three million tourists visit Sedona annually. How many believe in the vortex? The truth is that nature, with or without a vortex, has the power to move us with its immensity and beauty.

Next stop? Sedona

It happens. Suddenly, you realize monotony has taken over your life. What to do? A quick getaway can give you the novelty and thrill you have missed. If you want to feel your heart pumping, visit Sedona. Located just two hours away from Phoenix by car, this city of almost 10,000 residents was founded in 1902 and is known for its red rocks, green vegetation, more than 200 hiking trails, vortexes, and alternative healing. 

“Sedona is beautiful, especially the red rocks and the pine trees. What I like the most was hiking and looking around at the scenery,” says Seoka Hwang, a South Korean tourist. 

The northern region of Arizona is called the Colorado Plateau, characterized by a big stack of rock layers formed over millions of years of geologic activity. Sedona is situated on the Mogollon Rim, which marks the edge of this plateau. The city’s spectacular and dramatic landscape is mainly attributed to its red color caused by iron oxide. 

Besides the stunning views, Tufan Neupane enjoyed the peace he experienced during his trip. He found the city to be relaxing and spiritual. “I visited the Amitabha Stupa, which was particularly meaningful to me since I came from the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal. Interestingly, being in Sedona made me feel at home.” The Amitabha Stupa & Peace Park is a place for prayer and meditation owned by a Tibetan Buddhist temple. 

For Riaz Ul-Haq, a tourist from Pakistan, Sedona is the perfect summer destination. “The weather is very good, especially when coming from Phoenix. It is also green and a healing area. This is why I strongly recommend staying here.”

Alternative healing treatments abound in downtown Sedona, from hypnotherapy to reiki and chakra balancing, earning the city its reputation as a “spiritual Mecca.” Wherever you look, there is something for everyone. 

From a young age, Dr. Steven Semken was fascinated with rocks, landscapes, outdoor activities, and science. Therefore, it was only natural for him to study geology, and it is no surprise that he loves Sedona and the northern region of Arizona. “You get a sense of awe because it is a large landscape, great for contemplation. You also cannot help but admire the beauty of the rocks. There is no question that those red rocks are reminiscent of Mars. This town is culturally rich so that many things will excite you,” he sums up. It is time to listen to the expert and start planning your Sedona getaway.
