Spring Tour of St. George
- When 15 Apr 2023
- 7:30 AM
- Location St. George, Utah, 50 South Main Street/St. George Town Square
Ride: 30 - 75 - 100 Hilly Flexible
Leader: Joni Bauer, 209-482-2429, [email protected]
Description: They say that variety is the spice of life, and St. George has a little bit of everything. It’s layered with red rocks that define the northern side of the city jutting above the valley. You get a look deep into those sandstone cliffs in Snow Canyon and it’s all topped off with the largest laccolith in the world, Pine Valley Mountain. The area is defined by these layers and accented by the green trees in the valleys and the cottonwoods around the Virgin and Santa Clara Rivers. There’s a lot to see. The Tour of St. George gives you a guided tour of all those layers. Starting downtown, the route immediately climbs toward the red rocks and skirts the base of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve as you make your way toward the Red Mountain and pass by the mouth of Snow Canyon. You will be treated to views of the sandstone topped by the surrounding mountains. As you keep pedaling, you will dip all the way down to the Arizona Stateline while you make your way toward Sand Hollow and Quail Creek State Parks and their corresponding lakes. From there, your return trip take you past more layers of sandstone and terminates back where you started in an oasis of green surrounded by red rocks.

Washington City honors cyclists killed on April 9 with ‘ghost bike’ memorial site
Two cyclists from California were hit and killed by a driver suspected of having been under the influence along a busy roadway in Washington City on April 9. Now, Southern Utah will have a permanent reminder of those deaths and, officials hope, a reminder to motorists to be more careful on the road.
Two "ghost bikes," spray-painted still bicycles, are currently located off the intersection of Telegraph Street and Coral Canyon Boulevard. There will soon be a permanent memorial located where the two cyclists were hit.
On Friday, Washington City held a public news conference to both honor the victims, brothers Matthew Bullard and Adam Bullard, and try to raise awareness about keeping roads safe for cyclists. Roughly 60 people attended.

“It's just the amount of traffic on the road. Unfortunately, sheer statistics are going to show you that they're going to go up," Washington City police Lt. Kory Klotz said.
The memorial included Washington City Mayor Kress Staheli, City of St. George Mayor Michele Randall, members the Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance and the Washington City Police as speakers.
“I was speaking with our police chief just last night and there was a driver who was not impaired with any type of substance but distracted with passengers in the back," Staheli said. "So, she was swerving along the road that he pulled her over. And, you know, she had all the excuses in the world and showed emotion but there's just zero tolerance. So, distracted driving, impaired driving, we're just drawing a hard line on that."
The memorial is in the works and scheduled to be installed sometime after the upcoming IRONMAN triathlon on May 7, according to Jordan Hess, Washington City's public information officer. Officials said they want the ghost bikes and the memorial site to be a permanent reminder of the consequences of driving recklessly.
The suspected impaired driver, Julie Budge, 47, a resident of Hurricane, was arrested the day of the incident and is being held without bail. Budge has a record of impaired driving, Klotz said.
