SuperStar Virgo is a Leo class cruise ship owned and operated by Star Cruises. She was built in 1999 by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The SuperStar Virgo was ordered by Star Cruises on 22 November 1995 from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany as the second ship of the Leo class, and the second newbuilding for Star Cruises. Like her sister ship SuperStar Leo, she was designed specifically for the Asian cruise market.[2] The keel of the SuperStar Virgo was laid on 18 November 1996, and she was floated out of drydock on 23 December 1998. She was delivered to Star Cruises on 2 August 1999.

Following the lengthy transit from Papenburg to Singapore the SuperStar Virgo entered service on cruises from Singapore on 10 October 1999. On 24 April 2003 the SuperStar Virgo was relocated from Singapore to operate cruises out of Perth, Western Australia due to the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Southeast Asia. Initially the redeployment was planned to last only a one-month evaluation period, but due to the success of the cruises out of Australia the SuperStar Virgo was based in Perth until July 2003.

At our various dining outlets, we are sure to please even the most discerning palate. Savour Japanese specialities at Samurai Restaurant or exotic Indian temptations at The Taj! Check out some of our dining highlights below.

Other Facilities

In 2004 the SuperStar Virgo became the sole "mega-ship", and the only purpose-built ship, in Star Cruises' fleet, when her sister SuperStar Leo was transferred to the fleet of Star Cruises' subsidiary Norwegian Cruise Line (newbuildings planned or ordered by Star Cruises after the SuperStar Virgo had either been cancelled or moved to the NCL fleet prior to delivery). On 2 April 2008 the SuperStar Virgo relocated from Singapore to Hong Kong as her port of departure until 26 October 2008, the redeployment coinciding with the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She was then returned to Singapore late October 2008 and resumed her current itinerary.

In January 2009, Star Cruises installed a 100m mega-waterslide onboard SuperStar Virgo during her drydock period in Singapore. In January 2012, SuperStar Virgo received new hull art and livery.

SuperStar Virgo is the only international cruise ship with regular destination cruises to be homeported in Hong Kong from 7 April to 26 October 2014.

Note: The current fleet of Star Cruises ships is operated by Resorts World One under the name Genting Dream Cruises.

SUPERSTAR VIRGO: Cruise Guide for First-Timers (What to Expect)

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Packing & Pre-Trip Preparations

star cruise virgo hong kong

  • First things first, travel documents. If you’re joining the Manila-Laoag-Kaohsiung-Hong Kong cruise, no visas needed. You only need to bring your passport and a photocopy of its bio page.
  • It’s a cruise so it wouldn’t hurt to dress up and achieve your #OOTD goals. We packed at least 2 sets of garments a day: one set of light clothes for touring, and another for the evening shows. Why two sets? It’s pretty cool inside the ship, but things change as soon as you get out of it. In our case, it’s the middle of April! Onboard, I’m clad in shorts and a t-shirt with a polo on top of it. But as soon as we go outside, I had to remove the polo because it would get too hot especially on Ilocos and Kaohsiung stops. Hong Kong was a different story. It rained so hard for a brief moment. Takeaway: check the weather in every stop and prepare accordingly.
  • The rooms are also equipped with slip-on sandals, bath robes, and toiletries. You will also be provided a see-through plastic pouch wherein you can put your passport and access card (which I will explain later).
  • Remember: Each passenger is allowed only one piece of check-in luggage free-of-charge. Anything more will incur additional fees.
  • For the Manila season, the default currency is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD).

star cruise virgo hong kong

  • In many ways, the process is similar to that at the airport. You still need valid travel documents, check in your baggage, and pass through an immigration inspection and security checks before boarding.
  • You will be given a mag card (access card). DO NOT LOSE IT. It’s the most important item as soon as you step into the ship. It serves as your keycard to your cabin and credit card when purchasing something or dining at specialty restaurants. You will also need this when disembarking to explore the ports and when returning to the ship.
  • You will need to surrender your passport upon boarding. You’ll have it back after the journey.

Safety Drill

As soon as everyone is settled, there will be a safety drill that you are required to participate in. It is extremely important that you are familiar with the ship’s geography and the directions you need to take in case of an emergency.

star cruise virgo hong kong

In Manila, the drill happens right before sunset, so as soon as it’s over, head straight to Deck 12 to have a better view. We’ve been to a lot of places around the world, but Manila offers some of the most spectacular sunsets.

Do it at every stop. Nothing is more relaxing that just watching the sun call it a day.

3 Inclusive Restaurants

“Inclusive,” meaning you can dine here free-of-charge. It’s part of what you paid for. Onboard the Virgo, there are three inclusive dining options:

  • Mediterranean Buffet . The most popular, located on Deck 12, just behind the Parthenon Pool. Serves breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. No reservations needed.
  • Genting Palace . Western and Chinese cuisines. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is also where the Gala Dinner takes place. Although it is inclusive, reservation is required.
  • The Pavilion Room . Family-style restaurant. In my opinion, of the three, this is the best. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations required.

Both Genting Palace and the Pavilion offer full-course meals (appetizer, soup, main course, dessert). Drinks will be charged to your room.

star cruise virgo hong kong

Aside from these, there are specialty dining options! There’s the Taj offering Indian favorites, and Samurai serving delectable Japanese cuisine. Samurai have us our best gastronomic experience onboard. From the salmon and yellowtail (hamachi) sashimi as appetizer to teppanyaki as main course and matcha ice cream as dessert, that meal was scrumptious from start to finish.

Shore Excursions (Shorex)

This is the part where you can get off the ship and explore the city where it is docked.

In our case, it has three stops: Laoag, Kaohsiung, and Hong Kong. At every stop, they offer various pre-arranged tours called Shorex (shore excursions). For example, in Laoag, you have a choice among Laoag City Tour, Paoay Sand Dunes, Vigan Heritage Tour, and a couple more.

Other routes will have their own shorex offers, of course.

star cruise virgo hong kong

You can book a pre-arranged tour or do it on your own (DIY). It’s completely up to you.

  • If you book a shorex , you will be joining the rest of the cruise passengers who booked that tour. The great thing about it is that you have everything taken care of for you. You will have a tour guide and a few members of the crew will join the group. They will make sure you’re back at the port in time for sailing. Meals are also often included.
  • If you pull a DIY , you have complete control of your time and it’s going to be cheaper. However, make sure you’re back by the prescribed time because the ship will NOT wait for you.

Either way, you will be given a small sheet of paper upon disembarkation. READ IT, UNDERSTAND IT, KEEP IT. It will tell you what time you have to be back. It changes per stop. The boarding deadline in Taiwan is different from that in Hong Kong.

Room and Amenities

star cruise virgo hong kong

There are four types of accommodations onboard, from the cheapest to the fanciest: Inside Room, Ocean View Room, Balcony Room, and Suite. On our first time, we stayed in an Inside Room; this time in a Balcony Room. In both occasions, the room was always regularly maintained, with multiple cleanups within the day. Complimentary bottles of water also replenish every day.

If you have enough budget for an Inside Room, go for it. Don’t drop the idea of cruising just because you can’t afford the best rooms. In my experience, we spent most of our time outside the room — going on shore excursions, pigging out at the restaurants, and exploring other amenities.

Speaking of amenities, here are some that you can enjoy for FREE:

  • Gym . We packed gym clothes but we failed to use them because we would already average 15,000 steps per day just by joining the shore excursions.
  • Pool . Located on Deck 12.
  • Casino . In case you’re interested. Deck 7.

star cruise virgo hong kong

There’s also Duty Free shops on Decks 7 and 8, and a small store selling chips, chocolates, and biscuits (including Filipino products) on Deck 12 just next to the bar.

Spend your evenings watching a show at the Lido Theater. Some of these performances can be enjoyed for free, while others incur additional charges, including the for-adults-only show.

Gala Night and Dinner

Happens on the fifth night. It’s an event that begins with a cocktail party at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7, where the captain introduces the senior members of the crew. There are also musical performances. Overflowing wine! Loved it!

star cruise virgo hong kong

At around 6pm, enjoy a full-course dinner at the Genting Palace as a pianist serenades you with the endless ocean in the background.

If you intend to join this, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. Dress Code: Elegant Casual. No shorts and no open toed footwear. For guys, prepare a collared shirt or blazer.

We know how important it is to you so we created a separate section for it.

Every passenger is given 1-hour complimentary internet access. If you need more, you’re gonna have to purchase a plan.

  • 24 hrs: HKS 116
  • 24 hrs (Social plan): HKD 54
  • Whole Cruise: HKD 505

Remember: you’re in the middle of the ocean, sharing the connection with the rest of the ship, so don’t expect lightning speeds, but it’s good enough for browsing, checking emails, social media, and even watching YouTube videos.

star cruise virgo hong kong

What we love the most about the Superstar Virgo is that it feels like home because of the staff. There are a lot of Filipinos working onboard: from the reception to the restaurants to the room services. I’m pretty sure there are more in the non-guest-facing departments, too. And it’s always wonderful to get to talk with them. They are proud of their work!

The rest of the crew is warm, friendly, and always willing to help. You don’t even need to ask for assistance. If they see you looking like you need something (info, direction, whatever), they will be the first to approach you with a smile.

Checking Out

  • On the day before you arrive in Manila, you will be requested to proceed to Deck 12 for a health check. You will just be filling out a form and pass by a thermal imager.
  • Pack your stuff before hitting the sack on your last night because they will collect your check-in baggage early in the morning of your last day. You can leave the bag or suitcase outside your door and someone will pick it up.
  • Don’t forget to settle the bill before disembarking. Know that a gratuity of HKD110 PER NIGHT is charged to every guest (except infants below 2yo). HKD120 per guest staying in a suite.

I believe I’ve covered everything! Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Vins and I were kind of bummed that the Manila season would only last until May 28 because we wanted to do it again with our parents! Here’s hoping they’d return to the Philippines next year!

We will be going this Monday. Availed the Seniors Sale which is a good price, I think. I just don’t like the fine print on the 100HKD fee. I’m thinking of passing up on the final Gala night, as I don’t plan on bringing along shoes and formal wear.. still thinking if we should check it out..

yoshke

Doesn’t need to be formal. Just make sure your shirt has collar. And closed shoes. :D The food is somewhat similar to the usual Genting Palace menu though. :) I was just there for the free wine. Haha

Iris Rivera

How about for women? Can’t we wear elegant open toed sandals? Thanks. Great article, by the way, very helpful!

Do you have a package rate for 5 people? One of the 5 would be a senior citizen, is there a special rate for senior citizens?

Hi! Please visit Star Cruises website for the latest promos. Also, they’re not doing the Kaohsiung-HongKong route this year. They’re doing Keelung-Okinawa. :)

Is there a weight limit for the checked in luggage? How about hand carry luggage is it the same as in an airplane?thanks

virgie alano

hi! nice article and very helpful. i have the same question, do they have specific weight and measurement on the luggage? will it matter if a passenger brings in a small or big luggage as long as it’s 1 pc or is there a specified weight on the luggage to be taken in for free?

Hi Virgie, there was no indicated weight limit for our trip. Only the number of luggage. However, things might have changed this year, so let me get back to you on this. I’ll ask someone from Star Cruises. :)

Jayne

Thanks for the infos. Will be cruising for the first time with the parentals. And were excited. Your blog is so helpful. Thanks again

Hi! Ur blog is superrr helpful.. id like to ask Lang for the gala night, does it rally require evening gown?? We’re coming to the cruise this march Thankssss

Di naman kelangan evening gown. :)

Michelle

Hi! We’ll be traveling next month. I just want to ask how/where do we reserve seats in restaurants like Genting Palace and Pavilion? Thank you!

P.S. Does anyone know pano mode of transpo pag DIY trip sa Keelung and Ishigaki? Like malayo ba port sa city center and kung may mga taxis na near the ship?

Re Genting Palace and Pavilion, we just called the lobby/reception when we were there na.

Julia

Hi thanks for the infos. May I ask how much is the fee for the gala night? And is it buffet or fine dining? Thanks

Fine dining. If I remember correctly, included na yan sa binayaran.

Belle

Thank you for this! it makes me excited to avail there cruise. May I know what other charges I should expect that is not included in buying the ticket online? One that you mentioned is the gratuity, but I also read that there are port charges and others but doesn’t have a figure so I cannot calculate the estimated budget :)

Did you pay anything else?

In our experience, yung gratuity lang and ung wi-fi. :)

shine

Hi , This was very helpful. Regarding the gratuity, your blog says 100hkd which is much cheaper from what ive read from other blogs…. Other blogs said it was 500hkd…. Which is very expensive na… We will be travelling next month june 3 to 10. Can you help me in assuring how much really is the gratuity this year so that we can prepare…mahirap na kasi baka ma overspend kami sa pag labas namin sa hk and taiwan . Thank you so much and God bless you. Your blog really helped me naking our IT

Hi Shine, I just reached out to Star Cruises, and they said that the gratuity is now HKD 110 per night. (Last year, 100 lang.)

I think the confusion is kasi PER NIGHT ung HKD 110. So if 5 nights, that’s HKD550 for the whole trip.

We’ll update this post na rin. :)

Che

My fave travel blog site since forever! :)

For the shorex, which do you recommend, pre-arranged tour o DIY lang? We’ll be boarding this coming weekend na… :)

Thanks much!

DIY na lang, bes! Basta make sure makabalik kayo on time. :)

Minnie

This is such a very good and helpful post! :) I’m planning to treat my senior citizen parents for a trip like this but i really don’t have any idea if magkano magagastos? Would you be so kind to give me a range so alam ko kung ilan dapat ipunin ko :D and panu inaavail ung birthday promo in case? plan ko i-book sa birth month ng papa ko kase.

Thank you so much!

Hard to tell kasi ung na-experience namin ay ibang route (Taiwan-Hong Kong). Iba na yung routes ngayon.

You can do a mock booking sa Star Cruises website. On board, wala namang gastos na except ung gratuities and wifi, unless kakain kayo sa mga hindi free na restaurants.

Jamboleo

Hi. thank you for the info. it is of big help for first timers. may mga ilang questions lang ako, sana macover mo lahat. thank you in advance…

3. halimbawa, gusto namin lagi mag dine sa genting or pavilion.. need ba magpa reserve in advance for the whole 5 nights or pa reserve na lang each morning? buffet ba sa mediterranean o set meal din like sa genting and pavilion?

4. should we still give tips (in hkd or php?) despite the gratuities?

5. even after having dined at genting or pavilion, can one still eat at mediterranean? in cases na, di maciadong nabusog or kung naging picky yung kid ko at di kinain yun food nya…

6. you mentioned, Every passenger is given 1-hour complimentary internet access… each day or for the whole stay?

7. me free maps ba na ibibigay sa ship ng mga ports na pupuntahan?

8. keri lang ba na bumalik agad sa barko pag short lang yun DIY na lakwatsa sa mga ports?

sowi kung sobrang daming tanong…ganun ka-ecited. hehe! super thank you in advance!

1. Let me get back to you on that. I’ll ask Star Cruises. Ako kasi ay isang maleta and isang backpack. Yung backpack as carry on, hinayaan naman. Di ko alam kapag maleta.

2. Oks lang B&W.

3. No idea if pwede mo ipareserve 5 straight nights. Yep, buffet sa mediterranean.

4. no need na.

5. Hmmm, not sure. Kasi when you enter a restaurant, they get your card to record that you have eaten there. Not sure if kapag nakakain ka na sa isa, pwede pa sa kabila.

6. whole stay.

7. wala sa amin.

thank you so much! hoping to bump into you in one of our travels. =)

Joey

Hi i would like to ask how did u pay for ur booking? Wla daw kasi cash payment online debit or credit card, is it safe? Thank u

It’s safe.

John

Very little info on SSVirgo here in Australia so would appreciate your help. 1. Do they offer a drinks package on 5nt ex Manila and cost? 2. Do they have set dinner times, e.g. 6pm and 8pm or is it anytime dining and how do you make reservations? 3. Would very much like to attend the Gala Dinner. How do I book for this?. Many thanks.

1. I reached out to Star Cruises and they said that special offers such as drink, tour, or shopping packages are sometimes offered onboard or via shop.starcruises.com. I wasn’t able to get the costs though.

2. You can make reservations onboard, maybe on your first day. Just visit the restaurant you want to book. Or if you booked via agency, you can course it through them too. There are at least 3-4 hour specific dining times (breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper) for each restaurant. Dinner is from 6pm-9pm.

3. Upon embarking, you can go straight to the restaurant that you want to book and reserve. The gala dinner happens at all key restaurants onboard and each has its own gala dinner menu. But the best for the occasion, I think, is Genting Palace. The program happens at the Grand Piazza on Deck 7.

ces pe

just take hold of the Star Navigator…it will take you to the whole ship’s entertainment..and restaurant’s schedule…it is give in your doorstep just before retiring…enjoy the most of your stay…tour and tour around..it will get you there

no limit as to baggage if you embark or disembark in MaNILA…I mean balikan..

Is it correct that if you dine in the restaurant you cannot then go up to the buffet for a bit more? Other lines have no such restriction but I have read that you will be charged on SuperStar Virgo.

Hi John, yes, that’s true. Years ago, there was no such restriction. But when we cruised again last year, they have started swiping the card when entering a dining establishment to check if you’ve had your meal elsewhere for that dining period. The good news is, there are a lot of dining periods in a day: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. So you just have to wait a bit more and you’ll be able to enter the buffet area again.

Caleb

Hi may i know the ideal deck if we will be travelling with our 7 year-old son? What about for the senior citizens?

Hi Caleb, i think the deck hardly matters because there are several elevators naman. What’s more important if you have seniors is your distance from the elevators. For example, kami, yung room na naassign na amin was a bit far from the elevators so mahabang lakad every time we go out. According to Star Cruises, when you book with an agent, you can request for a room na closer to the elevators. :)

Christie

Do you know if there are any restrictions on bringing our own food like bread or chips, fruit? Just for snacking in our room. Thanks!

Hi Christie, okay lang daw basta hindi alcohol.

Vicencio Ang

I would like to seek your help i was booked and paid for a cruise for superstar virgo going to vietnam dec 24 -29 2018 my problem my passport is 6 months valid which is a problem i really dont know what happened on the process and booking stage i already send a copy of my passport before booking but now im having a problem on the validity of my passport staff of star cruise should counter double check everything before booking its a hassle for me! Hotline staff investigate on the matter it should be urgently but until now no reply yet

Hi Vicencio, medyo di ko po naintindihan yung problem. Nagbook po kayo pero less than 6 months na lang ung passport validity? Saan po kayo nagbook? Online or via travel agency?

Shirley

Hi, If you missed ba iyong online shore excursion nila, will they offer on board shore excursion? Wala na kasi when I check 3 days before. Were l eaving on the 24th. Thanks

Hi Shirley, ang alam ko pwede pa ring magbook onboard, pero di ko sure. :)

Patsy

Hi, We are considering Superstar Virgo/Explorer Dream around New Zealand Dec 2019. We do not have gratuities in our country, is it compulsory on this ship? We are a “no smoking” country, can we get inside cabins that do not smell of smoke? In other revues it says ship does not cater for ‘westerners’, now wondering if we should go on the ship.

Debbie

Hi po.. First time mag-c-cruise.. Magkano po ba lahat2(pati offshore ex. Di po DIY) ng gastos po pra makaprepare kami.. Balak ko kc cruise for honeymoon.

Jade

Hello po. So you have a guude for planning a cruise ship tour around Europe? Thanks

Jocelyn belaro

How much that is cost per person?do we need to pay advance before the cruise start?

Resorts World One Review

Review of resorts world one.

The 1999-built Resorts World One cruise ship was launched as "SuperStar Virgo" (for Star Cruises) and operated under the name "Explorer Dream" (for Dream Cruises) in the period 2019-2022. Both companies (Star Cruises and Dream Cruises) were fully owned by the Malaysian corporation Genting Group.

Explorer Dream's fleetmates were the newbuild premium passenger liners Genting Dream (2016) and World Dream/now Aroya Manara (2017). The sistership SuperStar Leo/now Norwegian Spirit is owned by NCL .

Since February 2023, Resorts World One is operated under charter by Resorts World Cruises ( new travel brand /May 2022-established) owned by GHK's former owner Lim Kok Thai.

The vessel (IMO number 9141077) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000165) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Genting Cruises was one of the world's largest cruise companies and the biggest (by fleet/ passenger capacity ) on the Asia-Pacific market. The company was listed on the Singapore Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Star Cruises was established as an associate of Genting Group of Malaysia, incorporated on November 10, 1993, in Bermuda (corporate headquarters in Hong Kong ). The first ships were two cruiseferries bought from the bankrupt Swedish company Rederi AB Slite. Star Cruises purchased several other second-hand vessels in the following years. In 1998, the company acquired its first newbuild - SuperStar Leo (now Norwegian Spirit for NCL ). The sistership SuperStar Virgo (Explorer Dream) followed in 1999.

Explorer Dream cruise ship (SuperStar Virgo)

The 2800-passenger ship Explorer Dream was constructed in Germany by Meyer Werft ( Papenburg Shipyard ) and delivered to Star Cruises on August 2, 1999. In March-April 2019, the boat was drydocked in Singapore for a complete redesign and refurbishment, then transferred from Star Cruises to Dream Cruises.

In the period 1999-2019, the vessel was operated by Star Cruises (GHK's subsidiary, sister-brand of Dream Cruises) under the name "SuperStar Virgo".

In May 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed a partnership deal with Wirecard (digital payments / online shop development company) for implementing a fleetwide onboard payment system. The system ("Quick Pay") was first installed on World Dream and Genting Dream, then launched on SuperStar Virgo (Explorer Dream). "Quick Pay" allows passengers to be in full control of their onboard money spending - including pre-authorized limits, account management, monitoring, paying the total bill at disembarkation. The technology is based on scanning individual QR codes (during check-in, in staterooms or via the ship's intranet network, then selecting the "Quick Pay" option. Payments can be made via Alipay (Chinese online payment platform) and the credit cards Visa, American Express, Mastercard, Diners Club, JCB, UnionPay. The mobile app allows passengers to set up pre-authorized amounts for themselves, as well as for friends and family members.

In 2018, Genting Cruise Lines signed an agreement with Okinawa Agricultural Cooperatives Association and Leospo Inc. Following the partnership, on select GHK-owned liners was offered Okinawa-sourced food and local produce. The new onboard dining options include the famous Okinawa Wagyu beef and Okinawa Agu pork. The offer was available on select ships and during summer when they cruise to Okinawa. The exclusive gourmet dishes are served via specially designed theme menus. Explorer Dream ship's hull art was designed by the NYC -based Chinese artist Kuri Huang. The artwork has Dream-brand's signature mermaid icon. Ship's godmother is Grace Chen - a very successful Chinese fashion designer, Founder and Chief Designer of "Grace Chen Couture" (brand established in 2009 as one of China's major fashion companies), as well as Chinese alumni of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. Liner's christening ceremony was on April 11, 2019, held in homeport Shanghai . Mrs Chen also presented an exclusive onboard fashion show during the inaugural cruise.

Following the acquisition, vessel's registry/flag-state was changed from Panama (MMSI 357271000 of SuperStar Virgo) to Bahamas (MMSI 311000165 of Explorer Dream).

Ship refurbishments review

Explorer Dream's drydock in 2021 (February 19-25) was conducted at CSBC Kaohsiung Shipyard (Kaohsiung Taiwan) .

Resorts World One's first drydock refurbishment was in 2023 (January 25-February 15) at Singapore 's Sembcorp Marine Shipyard. The project included technical maintenance and class works, and some minor hotel renovations.

The vessel's 2019 drydock (USD 56 million refurbishment project) added new facilities and amenities, including The Palace - an exclusive ship-within-a-ship suite complex with over 40 new staterooms served by dedicated butlers. The Palace passengers also enjoy beverage and dining privileges and exclusive activities, like fashion workshops with Chen and Connoisseurs Circle (club amenities).

SuperStar Virgo Returns to Hong Kong

  • March 22, 2017

star cruise virgo hong kong

The SuperStar Virgo was back in Hong Kong for Star Cruises on March 22, with 2,200 passengers aboard as part of her latest deployment, with calls in Taiwan, the Philippines and Hong Kong, part of the company’s “Jewel of the South China Sea” deployment program, a six-day/five-night itinerary with triple homeports.

“The SuperStar Virgo’s new deployment not only paves the way for her homecoming in a city that has been an important base for her previously but also demonstrates Star Cruises’ support for the Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC), an alliance between Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Hainan and Xiamen, marked by the ship’s triple homeport between Hong Kong, Kaohsiung and the cruise line’s inaugural deployment to Manila,” said Star Cruises, in a prepared statement.

The call was commemorated with a special ceremony held onboard SuperStar Virgo and attended by Ang Moo Lim, President of Star Cruises; Anthony Lau, Executive Director of Hong Kong Tourism Board; Dr.Wayne Liu, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau, the Honourable Maria Corazon Jorda-Apo, Director – Market Development Group, Philippine Department of Tourism, invited dignitaries, executives from Genting Hong Kong, and the media.

“We are truly delighted to have SuperStar Virgo back in Hong Kong again to continue our long and fruitful relationship with the city,” said Moo Lim.

According to Star, the “Jewels of the South China Sea” itinerary also reinforces the company’s commitment to the Asia Cruise Cooperation to promote maximum growth in cruise tourism for its member destinations and for Asia.

“We are very excited to see this brand-new triple homeport deployment in Asia, which marks an important milestone in Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC),” said Anthony Lau, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “The ACC aims to fuel the growth of cruise tourism in Asia by providing marketing and funding support to cruise lines. The success of this new interport itinerary best demonstrates the alliance’s commitment. The HKTB would like to thank Star Cruises for this deployment and their continued support in developing cruise tourism in the region. We are determined to keep the momentum going, and look forward to welcoming more cruise ships to Hong Kong.”

A Day in the High Sea

Star Cruises is the eighteenth largest cruise line in the world after Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Cruises and 15 others. Star Cruises dominates the Asia-Pacific market and is owned by Genting Hong Kong. The company is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Singapore Exchange.

The luxurious grand staircase of the SuperStar Virgo Cruises. Photo taken via official Facebook page.

Star Cruises is credited with almost single-handedly developing the cruise industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Its foray into the global shipping market has allowed it to tap into lucrative and more mature markets in North America and Europe. Its services cater to Asian passengers as well as to North Americans, Europeans and Australians interested in Asian destinations.

We were fortunate to enjoy Star Cruise Virgo where we enjoyed every detail of the ship for a first-time cruiser like us.

We would like to help you enjoy the star cruises too so we thought of answering some questions you may want to consider.

If you want to book a cruise at Star Cruise Virgo or Any of Star Cruises, you may check availability and promos here http://promos.starcruises.com/ or https://booking.starcruises.com/CheckPromo.aspx. Star Cruises sail around Asian region. You may want to visit a visa free to Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and our very own Philippines.

Inside the cabin room. Photo via official website.

The ship has a lot of cabins you may choose from and rate depends on the area.

Our cabin was the balcony where we enjoyed the view of the Navy-blue ocean we consider heaven. Also, it offers a generous outdoor space, a separate living area and plenty of luxurious touches, such as ensuite bathrooms, mini-fridges and flat-screen televisions.

Other cabin options include Oceanview cabins, Inside cabins, and suites as well.

The Boston Lobster and the Choux Swan Berry Chantilly .

We consider Super Star Virgo for a high quality of their cuisine. On board, we enjoyed our barbeque during sunset along with other cruiser. The ship has a lot of specialty restaurants and restaurants that serve mostly Asian foods which is no surprise on our palate. During my stay, I got to try some seafood delights such as the Green Mussels, Boston Lobster, and Sweet Prawn for lunch. For dessert, I had the Choux Swan Berry Chantilly and Double Dutch Chocolate Cheese Squares.

The ship serves breakfast, lunch and dinner indoor and outdoor which is perfect indulgence to satisfy your craving day or night. We recommend for you to try everything they serve and to order a lot of their Guava juice.

Entertainment

Spectacular magic performance witnessed by other guests boarding Star Cruises.

While on board, you too will get the chance to enjoy series of shows. Our team was able to witness a magic show. There was another show we failed to attend but base on what we heard, it was also worth to see.

Chilling on the outdoor pool.

The ship has available fitness equipment’s for work out buff cruisers. If you don’t want to miss your daily work out, no need to worry because there are equipment’s available on board. You can also do your cardio while running outside grasping fresh salty air and attaining a good tan during shore excursion. The craft also carry an outdoor pool, Jacuzzi which we lost count, Basketball and Golf ground and spa treatments. If shopping is your definition of convenience, they have a duty free and stores inside where you can buy “Pasalubong” after.

Indoor pool at the SuperStar Virgo Cruises for those who wanted to relax after roaming around the ship. Photo taken via official website.

One of our favorite was the fact that you get to bond with your family while on board. The ship has recreational room and play area for kids to which we think parents can also share. The library and writing room was what we like the most. It was quiet, the books are enticing and the set up was calming. What is more interesting than reading and writing facing the blue ocean anyway? It was truly kick back and relax experience for the family.

I must say that I have experienced a 100% unbelievable level of service. One of our colleagues forgot her camera while using the powder room. One of the cabin crew found and declared the camera. With us almost hopeless and feeling helpless, the crew assisted us all through security office to help us find our missing valuable. Imagine that it was not the quality of service we’ve come to expect but the ship was equipped with CCTV that will help you find your precious belongings.

Added to service, the ship is equipped with elevators which will take you to anywhere you like with this 13-decked craft. Guests can remain active without negotiating to the stairs!

If that’s not cool enough and you want to experience a mix of cosmopolitan cultures Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo is recommended for you! Cabin crews from different part of Asia are very accommodating and welcoming. Facilities are functioning very well and Onboarding and offboarding was well ordered.

Sushil's 7 days trip to Hong Kong

The whole trip went off very smoothly. The Macau property was amazing. The Hong Kong property was just average the room was too small for 4 persons. The food options for Vegetarians was very limited that needs to be improved. You need at least three or four filling options apart from the regular bread and fruits. Macau stay was very very good.

Gauri's 8 days trip to Hong Kong

Thank you so much for the arrangements made by travel triangle. We had an amazing trip. Everything went according to the itinerary. We did not have to face any difficulty and very much satisfied with the services provided by travel triangle. There was a difficulty before departure, the ferry bookings were made incorrectly by our spoc. This is very sad to write but, he did not correct it nor he had a courtesy to call the us and ask whether it is rectified or not. And most importantly, i would like to thank Bijay Kushwaha for the quick support by him. I had contacted him at 11PM regarding the ferry tickets issue. And the very next day he corrected my ferry tickets and sent me the updated tickets. And even he told that we can contact him anytime if any issue is there throughout my journey. This is the support customers need, when making the bookings from travel agency. We had even contacted customer care and whats app group regarding the same issue. But we were told that they can fix this in official hours. When we did not know whether our issue will get resolved or not, as we were supposed to fly within 10-11 hours. We really appreciate Bijay for helping us.

Amit's 5 days trip to Hong Kong

It was a good trip except for 2 things 1. I forgot my hat in the cab provided by the travel agency. I called the cab driver and he acknowledged that the hat was indeed there in the cab but there was no attempt made to return it inspite of me overstaying in Hong Kong due to flight cancellation because of protests. So a little extra effort would have been great. 2. Regal hotel experience was not up to the mark. Rooms were neat and clean but it lacks the elegance. The bathroom door was not getting closed. The refrigerator was not working. Boat ride at the Canal in The Venetian.

HONG KONG | Star Cruises SuperStar Virgo Cruise Shore Excursion

Star Cruises in Hong Kong

Even though I wasn’t too keen on visiting Hong Kong, you can’t put it on me for not trying. I’ve already booked two tickets to this world city northwest of the Philippines twice before in previous years but was thwarted by circumstances each time. I gave up afterwards, thinking it really wasn’t worth it. But somehow, this year, my feet, or more precisely, the cruise ship I was on—Star Cruises’ SuperStar Virgo, docked right in the middle on two of its main islands—right in the center of where it’s all happening.

DOCKING AT VICTORIA HARBOUR

At exactly twelve noon, Superstar Virgo’s Guangzhou to Hong Kong Cruise , docked at Victoria Harbour along the bustling Tsim Sha Tsui area. From my room, I can already see towering buildings filling the view of my personal balcony. I was rarin’ to disembark and see what the fuss was about, but lunch called first. After downing a bottle of Blue Girl and a Guinness Stout—which, surprisingly, I liked—I was finally ready for Hong Kong.

star cruise virgo hong kong

HONG KONG SHORE EXCURSION

For the Star Cruises SuperStar Virgo cruise shore excursion , we were given four hours to roam freely about. Most took this for shopping time, there have crazy sales on the island, they gushed. But me, I just wanted to walk about, see the once British colony on foot. I set my sights on Bruce Lee’s iconic sculpture along the length of Victoria Harbour and decided to wing it from there.

VICTORIA HARBOUR

With a couple of newfound friends as company, we sauntered along the promenade fronting the harbor, taking in the sights of skyscrapers vying for the heavens against the not-so-distant mountains beyond. The sprawl of buildings, with ships crisscrossing the waters in front of it, looked beautiful even under grey weather.

star cruise virgo hong kong

This was quite unexpected. This was exactly the reason why I was avoiding Hong Kong. I thought then that it was all about buildings, like a huge business district with nary a character. But that same reason had me enthralled at that moment. I was quickly warming up to this place.

star cruise virgo hong kong

TSIM SHA TSUI

From the regal Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower , the only remnant of a railway station that once ply the Kowloon-Canton (now Guangzhou) route during the early 1900’s, we headed towards the Avenue of Stars where sculptures and handprint plaques (including Wong Kar Wai’s and Bruce Lee’s famous statue) of the who’s who of Hong Kong cinema is located.

NATHAN ROAD

We were, however, met with defeat as we found that it was actually closed for renovation since August and wouldn’t open to the public again until the end of 2018. That sucks. But well, we have to move on. With no real itinerary on hand, our feet led us to Nathan Road , once known as the Golden Mile —even though it is more than two miles long.

Nathan Road can probably be compared to Singapore Orchard Road . It does house a lot of commercial establishments and shops, although more high-end ones can be found on the nearby Canton Road. But its wide avenue seems to be one of the busiest, if not the busiest, this side of Hong Kong.

WONG KAR-WAI’S CHUNGKING MANSION

And without even knowing it, we stumbled upon the Chungking Mansion . Now, my two friends were totally unaware why I was going bonkers in accidentally finding this particular building because if you really look at it, it doesn’t even look remotely interesting—even with the plethora of ads plastered on its walls and shops lining its front. I told them this was where Wong Kar-wai filmed his now legendary movie, Chungking Express . That gave me two blank stares from my companions. I dragged them inside, wanting to see the place with my own two eyes and walk along its dingy hallways. I was surprised to find its ground floor area replete, not with Chinese hawker stalls, but Indian food finds.

star cruise virgo hong kong

BLADE RUNNER HONG KONG

Still on a high, we escaped from the double-decker buses of the main road and ducked on one of the side streets connecting Nathan Road to get a more local feel of the place. From glistening steel and glass buildings, the architecture quickly changed to a more dated seventies-like form. The contrast between the clean and cold modernity of the now and the much warmer character of the old was making my head spin.

And it gets even more crazy as we went further in. Shops became smaller and much more personal. The amount of signboards advertising I-don’t-know-what (well, they’re in Chinese) were staggering. It felt very Blade Runner-esque, only the streets are immaculately clean and people are much more disciplined. It was almost like being in Tokyo some decades before it turned into the megacity that it is now. Not that I’ve seen that Tokyo, but my imagination said so, and you don’t argue with your imagination.

VICTORIA HARBOUR SUNSET

Dodging hordes of people—both local and tourists—we somehow managed to circle back to where we originally came from. The sun was dramatically making its way down in between the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island as we looped back. We solemnly paid our respects to its beauty. We paused—me, taking my Instagram photos—and my buddies, taking their selfies, before boarding the Superstar Virgo once more.

Even with only four hours in, Hong Kong surprised me. I cannot wait to be back in a week’s time for a much more thorough exploration of its nooks and crannies. Well… that’s granting my constant jinx in entering Hong Kong would break and my ticket wouldn’t get cancelled for the third time.
