Paul Edward Theroux is an American travel writer and novelist, whose best known work is, perhaps, The Great Railway Bazaar (1975), a travelogue about a trip he made by train from Great Britain through Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, through South Asia, then South-East Asia, up through East Asia, as far east as Japan, and then back across Russia to his point of origin. Theroux has also published numerous works of fiction, some of which were made into feature films. He was awarded the 1981 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel The Mosquito Coast .

Theroux was born in Medford, Massachusetts, the son of Catholic parents, a French-Canadian father and an Italian mother. After he finished his university education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he joined the Peace Corps and taught in Malawi from 1963 to 1965. While there, he helped a political opponent of Hastings Banda escape to Uganda, for which he was expelled from Malawi and thrown out of the Peace Corps. He then moved to Uganda to teach at Makerere University, where he wrote for the magazine Transition (including the article "Nkrumah the Leninist Czar.")

While at Makerere, Theroux began his three-decade friendship with novelist V. S. Naipaul, then a visiting scholar at the university. During his time in Uganda, an angry mob at a demonstration threatened to overturn the car in which his pregnant wife was riding. This incident may have contributed to his decision to leave Africa. He moved again to Singapore. After two years of teaching at the University of Singapore, he settled in England, first in Dorset, and then in south London with his wife and two young children.

His first novel, Waldo , was published during his time in Uganda and was moderately successful. He published several more novels over the next few years, including Fong and the Indians and Jungle Lovers . On his return to Malawi many years later, he found that this latter novel, which was set in that country, was still banned, a story told in his book Dark Star Safari .

He had already moved to London, in 1972, before setting off on his epic journey by train from Great Britain to Japan and back again. His account of this journey was published as The Great Railway Bazaar , his first major success as a travel writer, and which has since become a classic in the genre. He has since written a number of other travel books, including descriptions of traveling by train from Boston to Argentina ( The Old Patagonian Express ), walking around the United Kingdom (the poorly-received The Kingdom By The Sea ), kayaking in the South Pacific ( The Happy Isles Of Oceania ), visiting China ( Riding the Iron Rooster ), and traveling from Cairo to Cape Town ( Dark Star Safari ).

As a travel writer he is noted for his rich descriptions of people and places, laced with a heavy streak of irony, or even misanthropy. Other non-fiction by Theroux includes Sir Vidia's Shadow , an account of his personal and professional friendship with Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul that ended abruptly after thirty years.

Theroux currently resides in Hawaii and Cape Cod, Ma., U.S.A. He is currently married to Sheila Donnelly (since November 18, 1975). Previously, he was married to Anne Castle. He has two sons with his first wife—Marcel Theroux and Louis Theroux —both of whom are writers and television presenters. In his books, Theroux alludes to his ability to speak Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese, Chichewa, and Swahili.

Extras • By including versions of himself, his family, and acquaintances in some of his fiction, Theroux has occasionally disconcerted his readers. "A. Burgess, Slightly Foxed: Fact and Fiction", a story originally published in The New Yorker magazine (August 7, 1995), describes a dinner at the narrator's home with author Anthony Burgess and a book-hoarding philistine lawyer who nags the narrator for an introduction to the great writer. “Burgess” arrives drunk and cruelly mocks the lawyer, who introduces himself as “a fan.” The narrator’s wife, like Theroux’s then-wife, is named Anne and she shrewishly refuses to help with the dinner. The magazine later published a letter from Anne Theroux denying that Burgess was ever a guest in her home and expressing admiration for him, having once interviewed the real Burgess for the BBC: “I was dismayed to read in your August 7th edition a story....by Paul Theroux, in which a very unpleasant character with my name said and did things that I have never said or done.” When the story was incorporated into Theroux’s novel, My Other Life (1996), the wife character is renamed Alison and reference to her work at the BBC is excised.

• Theroux's sometimes caustic portrait of Nobel Laureate V.S. Naipaul in his memoir Sir Vidia's Shadow (1998) is at considerable odds with his earlier, gushing portrait of the same author in V.S. Naipaul, an Introduction to His Work (1972).

• On December 15, 2005 the New York Times published an op-ed piece by Theroux called "The Rock Star's Burden" criticizing Bono, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie as "mythomaniacs, people who wish to convince the world of their worth." Theroux, who lived in Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer and a university teacher, adds that "the impression that Africa is fatally troubled and can be saved only by outside help—not to mention celebrities and charity concerts—is a destructive and misleading conceit.

• However, in 2002, on publication of his Africa travelogue Dark Star Safari , reviewer John Ryle in the London Guardian contradicted Theroux's views on international aid, accusing him of ignorance. "I'm not an aid worker, but I was working in Kenya myself at about the time Theroux passed through ... It's not that Theroux is wrong to criticise the empire of aid. In some ways the situation is even worse than he says.... The problem is that Theroux knows next to nothing about it. Aid is a failure, he says, because 'the only people dishing up the food and doling out the money are foreigners. No Africans are involved'. But the majority of employees of international aid agencies in Africa, at almost all levels, are Africans. In some African countries it is international aid agencies that provide the most consistent source of employment.... The problem is not, as Theroux says, that Africans are not involved; it is, if anything, the opposite. How come he didn't notice this? Because, despite his hissy fits about white people in white cars who won't give him lifts, he never actually visits an aid project or the office of an aid organization." ( From Wikipedia .)

Book Reviews That's not exactly a journey readers will want to duplicate. Actually, Theroux himself seems mostly miserable. The tricky balance that has served him so well in the past eludes him here. He doesn't just grump about people, he lets them have it, as if trying to out-Naipaul Naipaul. In Malawi, he berates a man begging in the street, demanding why he doesn't ask for work instead of a handout.... Throughout Dark Star Safari , Theroux is particularly venomous on the subject of aid workers. There's a respectable philosophical position in here somewhere: namely, that foreign aid sponsors corruption and saps local initiative. But Theroux's critique of Africa seems more like anger in search of an argument. Rand Richards Cooper - The New York Times

Some of [Theroux's] observations about Africa's economic decline are astute, although his quest for explanations is limited to what he can extract from the cast of characters he meets along his way. Mostly, however, this book is an intelligent, funny, and frankly sentimental account by a young-at-heart idealist who is trying to make sense of the painful disparity between what Africa is and what he once hoped it might become. "You'll have a terrible time," one diplomat tells Theroux upon discovering the prolific writer's plans to hitch a ride hundreds of miles along a desolate road to Nairobi instead of taking a plane. "You'll have some great stuff for your book." That seems to be the strategy for Theroux's extended "experience of vanishing" into the African continent, where disparate incidents reveal Theroux as well as the people he meets. At times, he goes out of his way to satisfy some perverse curmudgeonly desire to pick theological disputes with Christian missionaries. But his encounters with the natives, aid workers and occasional tourists make for rollicking entertainment, even as they offer a sobering look at the social and political chaos in which much of Africa finds itself. Theroux occasionally strays into theorizing about the underlying causes for the conditions he finds, but his cogent insights are well integrated. He doesn't shy away from the literary aspects of his tale, either, frequently invoking Conrad and Rimbaud, and dropping in at the homes of Naguib Mahfouz and Nadine Gordimer at the beginning and end of his trip. He also returns to many of the places where he lived and worked as a Peace Corps volunteer and teacher in the 1960s, locations that have cropped up in earlier novels. These visits fuel the book's ongoing obsession with his approaching 60th birthday and his insistence that he isn't old yet. As a travel guide, Theroux can both rankle and beguile, but after reading this marvelous report, readers will probably agree with the priest who observes, "Wonderful people. Terrible government. Legendary travel writer and novelist Theroux will probably never work for the Kenya or Malawi (or any other country between Cairo and the Cape) tourist boards after the publication of this latest book. In it, he tells of being shot at in Kenya, depressed in Malawi, pestered in Mozambique, robbed in South Africa, and invaded by intestinal parasites in Ethiopia. But this is no mere tale of travel mishaps. Theroux, who lived and worked in Malawi and Uganda in the 1960s, has a genuine affection for the continent that comes through in his tales of African friends, old and new. America's master traveler takes us along on his wanderings in tumultuous bazaars, crowded railway stations, desert oases, and the occasional nicely appointed hotel lobby. "All news of out Africa is bad," Theroux gamely begins. "It made me want to go there." Forty years after making his start as a writer while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi, he returns for a journey from Cairo to Cape Town along "what was now the longest road in Africa, some of it purely theoretical." More reflective and less complaining than some of his other big-tour narratives (e.g., The Happy Isles of Oceania, 1992), Theroux's account finds him in the company of Islamic fundamentalists and dissidents, sub-Saharan rebels and would-be neocolonialists, bin Ladenites, and intransigent white landholders, almost all of them angry at America for one reason or another. The author shares their anger at many points. Of the pharmaceutical plant outside Khartoum that was flattened by a cruise missile on Bill Clinton's orders a few years back, he remarks, "Though we become hysterical at the thought that someone might bomb us, bombs that we explode elsewhere, in little countries far away, are just theater, of small consequence, another public performance of our White House, the event factory." Such sentiments are rarely expressed in post-9/11 America, and Theroux is to be commended for pointing out the consequences of our half-baked imperializing in Africa's miserable backwaters. His criticisms cut both ways, however; after an Egyptian student offends him with the remark, "Israel is America's baby," he replies, "Many countries are America's babies. Some good babies, some bad babies."Theroux is often dour, although he finds hopeful signs that Africa will endure and overcome its present misfortunes in the sight, for instance, of a young African boatman doing complex mathematical equations amid "spitting jets of steam," and in the constant, calming beauty of so many African places. Originally launched in 2009, the latest version of SkySafari is the creation of Simulation Curriculum , which also sells its Starry Night software. SkySafari 7 launched in 2022 and comes in three different versions: SkySafari 7 Basic (from $4.99/£4.99), SkySafari 7 Plus (from $12.99/£12.49) and SkySafari 7 Pro (from $19.99/£18.99). All are completely separate apps in that you cannot upgrade from one to the other — that’s an App Store thing.

SkySafari 7 Basic can show the positions of 120,000 stars, 222 of the best-known star clusters, nebula s and galaxies, all of the solar system 's major planets and moons and over 200 asteroids , comets and satellites . Meanwhile, SkySafari 7 Plus accesses a database of over 2.5 million stars, 32,000 deep sky objects down to 15th magnitude and 7,500 solar system objects. 

The pricier  SkySafari 7 Pro goes further, accessing a database of over 100 million stars, 3 million galaxies down to 18th magnitude, 750,000 solar system objects and every comet and asteroid ever discovered. Both Plus and Pro can be used to control networked telescopes and both have an in-app purchase option called 'Premium' (from $29.99/£26.49 annually, $3.99/£3.49 monthly), which gives the user access to more social features, with cloud-backup of data and the ability to use the app on various devices (details below).

The main improvement to how SkySafari looks in this latest version is a refreshed planetarium page. A tap of the compass icon syncs the screen with exactly how you’re holding your phone, with an AR option using the phone’s camera to overlay it on the surroundings.

A floating widget allows the user to set the time, while it’s also got some novel lists that both help amateurs get the most from their stargazing and teach more experienced astronomers something new. Alongside the usual 'Tonight’s Best' and 'Planets', there are 'Brightest Asteroids' and 'Best Deep Sky Objects', as well as 'Nearest Stars' and 'Best Variable Stars'.

There's also a handy 'Observing Planner' that allows you to select the types of objects you want to observe (say, galaxies or globular clusters of planetary nebulas) and sort the results by location, magnitude and even current altitude. It's even possible to zero in on that type of object within the boundaries of a specific constellation of star catalog (say, Messier, NGC or Caldwell).

A pinch of the screen zooms into a very high-resolution, neatly formatted display showing labeled stars and objects. Pinch to a certain level and a dotted circle will appear indicating your field of view using the equipment you've specified.  

A lot of care has been taken in designing how this app looks. Despite it being crowded with objects, even the dense star fields of Sagittarius and Scorpius contain star and nebula names that never overlap or look messy. Many objects have an icon indicating that they can be touched to bring up a dedicated information screen. Each one has rise, transit and set times, as well as magnitude, distance and size in arc minutes. There's often also a beautiful image, a spoken-word pronunciation and an explanation.

However, best of all are the icons that appear below, which allow you to add the object to an observing list, show which of your lists already contain it, and give you the chance to center the app on it. A brand-new feature called 'Galaxy' puts the object you've chosen in context by showing you its position on a map of the Milky Way . It joins 'Orbit', which shows you the object in 3D space and lets you move around it and closer to it.

These features are simple to use, not necessary for observing and not found on other stargazing apps. They're also vital for understanding what you're looking at. This stands as evidence that SkySafari 7 Pro is designed by astronomers committed to sharing knowledge, not just the names and locations of objects.

Another new feature for SkySafari 7 Pro is 'Tonight': an easily accessible panel that shows the sunrise and sunset times, moon phase and rise/set times, a light pollution map for your location and a calendar of events. The latter is impressive, with conjunctions, specific moon views and other observation and astrophotography opportunities presented with a paragraph of text and a link to it on the main planetarium page. It can then be saved and shared (to be viewed on LiveSky.com online) — as can anything in 'Events', though not anything in the 'Calendar' section.

OneSky and SkyCast, two brand-new features in SkySafari 7 Pro, are front-and-center within the app, making them easily accessible and very simple to use.

SkySafari 7 Pro uses a database no other stargazing app does. With over 100 million stars, 3 million galaxies down to 18th magnitude, and 750,000 solar system objects, it's an astronomy to-do list for life.

Many will want this app for its telescope control. Like previous versions, SkySafari 7 Pro can operate Wi-Fi-controlled telescopes (via the ASCOM Alpaca and INDI protocols, as well as SkyFi 3), but this new version also controls Celestron's extremely popular range of new StarSense telescopes, which are themselves operated via a smartphone app. This is an exclusive feature to SkySafari 7 Plus and Pro, largely because the StarSense Explorer app used by Celestron is, in fact, designed by the makers of SkySafari 7 Pro.

With SkySafari 7 Pro, and any other level of the app, comes a basic subscription to LiveSky: a cloud sync service that allows you to log in to your data in a web browser on any phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. It also includes access to OneSky: a new social feature that allows users to interact with each other while using the app. Once activated, the planetarium page shows you how many users are online right now and gives you options to observe the most popular object currently being viewed, then the next one, etc. — it's just a different way of observing. However, it's also possible to SkyCast your own observing to another user, who receives a 'Follow my SkyCast by clicking this link' invitation via email or any messaging app.  

While all that comes at a high initial price (though heavy discounts are frequently available), there is also one key in-app purchase. Although SkySafari 7 Pro now includes as standard previously paid-for add-ons including the Principal Galaxies Catalog database, the Gaia star catalogs and the incredible Apollo Lunar Missions (for each mission there’s an eye-opening 3D model of their journeys), there is also a SkySafari Premium option. It costs $29.99 (£26.49) annually or $3.99 (£3.49) per month. 

Some will find that galling after paying a high price for SkySafari 7 Pro, but some of the features in SkySafari Premium are impressive. Should I buy the SkySafari 7 Pro app?

Buy SkySafari 7 Pro if you're an amateur astronomer who uses a telescope, dabbles in astrophotography and wants to take advantage of the best stargazing app out there. Its database contains more objects than you'll ever have the time to observe, but with its improved telescope control (in particular its embracing of the Celestron StarSense products) and its endless customization and new social features, it leaves no star unturned. However, as well as being expensive and requiring patience to explore, its comprehensive features will be overkill for casual stargazers.

If SkySafari 7 Pro app isn't for you

For many users, SkySafari 7 Pro will surpass their needs. SkySafari 7 Basic's (799.8MB) combination of 120,000 stars and 222 of the best-known star clusters, nebulas and galaxies makes it rather like most of the other stargazing apps available, but there is another option that often gets overlooked. Simulation Curriculum’s middle-ranking SkySafari 7 Plus (1.1GB) is key in a classic 'good', 'better' and 'best' tiered pricing model. Consequently, it's the least popular, but it's a combination of 2.5 million stars, 32,000 deep sky objects, and 7,000 asteroids, comets and satellites. This, combined with its mobile telescope control, makes it a good-value app for a lot of potential users who find SkySafari 7 Pro too expensive.

If you want to go for something more affordable, consider Stellarium Mobile Plus , which also comes in a free version. It's got a database of over 1.69 billion stars, all known planets, natural satellites and comets, minor solar system objects, over 2 million nebulas and galaxies and the most well-known deep sky objects.

Vedic astrology, also called Jyotisha, provides deep insights into a person’s life based on celestial positions at birth. Rashi and nakshatra, which are an integral part of Jyotisha, are believed to influence an individual’s personality and life events. Throughout history, for some, it’s the divine, the infinite, inspiring art, literature, and design, representing a symbol of hope for humanity.

Whether you’re a stargazer, a designer, or a seeker of spiritual meaning, understanding the symbolism of stars can offer a deeper appreciation of the mystique and beauty of our universe. 

Symbol of Life

Our ancestors took notice of the stars. Points of light sprinkled across the night sky beyond their reach, both physically and intellectually. 

Gazing upon these familiar lights at the end of the day placed wonder in their minds and evoked a need for satisfaction from the explainable.

Many cultures revered and worshiped the stars, each passing down their unique story describing the origins of these celestial bodies of light, trying to make sense of it all.

We Come From Stars

As we know, our Sun, a star, provides warmth and energy, supporting life here on Earth. The ancient Egyptians and Aztecs, civilizations from different parts of the world, sensed this connection of life-giving properties and built their belief systems upon the foundation of the Sun as a symbol of the creator, a symbol of life .

The Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, believed the soul was connected to the stars in a way he named Musica Universalis or Music of the Spheres .

It was thought the human soul originated from the stars descending to Earth to learn important lessons while on this physical plane of existence. Each star had its unique vibration of sound only audible to the soul, creating a golden ratio resulting in universal harmony.

Science and astronomy have deciphered that the very matter within us and all other living organisms come from the remnants of giant red stars. Upon their demise, at the end of their unimaginable span of existence, these red stars release elements, the building blocks of life, scattered with a bang throughout the cosmos.

As the famed writer and poet Walt Whitman proclaimed, “I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey-work of the stars.” He, too, sensed that feeling of significance so many before him felt. He was spot-on more than he ever realized. The molecules within us were forged by these red giants.

What the ancients perceived and got right was the importance of stars. We come from stars.

Symbol of the Divine

In ancient times for many cultures, the stars, Sun, and Moon were woven into the fabric of spirituality, symbolizing the divine power . Each culture and era had its own stories and beliefs with different meanings.

The Spirit World

The Maories, indigenous people of New Zealand, believed each star was the soul of one of their war heroes, and the brightness of the star related to how many enemies the hero had slain in battle.

Chaldeans who lived in the area of present-day Iraq and Syria believed the stars to be lamps managed in the sky by angels.

The ancient Greece philosopher Homer believed the stars moved across the sky in chariots of the gods.

A falling or shooting star was a reminder the gods were watching from above, presenting a good time for making a wish and asking for their help or forgiveness. It was the beginning of shooting stars becoming a symbol of good luck or fortune. Depending on the earthly followers’ actions, these spirits of the other world could give favor or do harm.

Shooting stars, although not actual stars but meteors, were also seen by the ancient Greeks and Romans as messengers sent by the gods , the foreboding of an event soon to happen, possibly bad or good.

The pentagram, a five-point star, once used by the ancient Babylonians as a charm warding off evil spirits, later became adopted by the early Christians. Many symbols over the centuries were borrowed from other groups and altered, creating their own new meanings. The occultists often did this with Judeo-Christian symbols attributing some form of magic or spiritualism. The Wiccans’ and Druids’ version of the pentagram usually appears within a circle referred to as a pentacle . It is the star symbol most often referenced in magic . Its five points represent “Spirit,” “Water,” “Fire,” “Earth,” and “Air.”

It has only been in the past few centuries that the pentacle has become associated with evil due to the adoption of the modern occult, Satanists, and most recently sensationalized by Hollywood.

There have been many variations of stars throughout history associated with all aspects of spirituality, good and evil.

Symbol of Navigation

The ancients not only looked to the stars for spiritual guidance but learned they could count on certain stars to help them navigate from one place to the next. Stars like the North and Evening Star became a traveler’s beacon guiding them to the end of their journey, by water or land.

Finding Our Way In The World

The North Star, also known as Polaris, is not the brightest in the night sky, but its importance comes from its position. It sits in the sky, steadily tracking the north pole through the night, while the Evening Star and others move across the horizon, helping sailors or travelers follow their journey’s required direction.

The brightest star appearing in the night sky is Sirius, a star of importance for many, especially the Egyptians. After the Moon, the 2nd brightest object in the night sky is the Evening Star, also known as the Morning Star. It is not actually a star but the planet Venus.

During the era of slavery in the United States, the North Star became a symbol of hope and freedom for the enslaved people as they relied on this white star to help navigate their escape through the many nights before reaching the northern states and Canada.

Stars have become symbols of leadership, guidance, protection, and trust.

Symbol of Religion

Most cultures incorporated celestial elements to symbolize or portray important events within their spectrum of faith, their religion. In all cuneiform and hieroglyphic languages, the symbol for god was a star .

Let’s look at a few examples of the many symbols of stars associated with religions.

For the Christians, two stars stand out with religious significance, the Star of Bethlehem, also known as the Christmas Star, and the five-pointed star, a Pentagram, with each point of the star symbolizing one of the five crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ.

The Star of Bethlehem

The Star of Bethlehem, a guiding light that led the Magi to Jerusalem in search of the newborn baby, Jesus, the son of God, not only symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ but both new beginnings and renewed hope .

The Pentagram

The Pentagram, a five-pointed star, symbolizes to Christians the five wounds Jesus endured while crucified on the cross . One wound for each hand or wrist, one for each foot, and the last due to the Lance of Longinus piercing his side. The 5 points of the star represent a total of five wounds.

Judaism’s most prominent symbols of stars are Solomon’s Seal and the Star of David. Both are related in designed and inspired by earlier cultures of the middle east.

The Seal of Solomon

The Seal of Solomon is depicted as either a six-pointed star (hexagram) or a five-pointed star pentagram. The signet ring belonging to the Israelite King Solomon has meaning in Judaism, Islam, and Western occultism. It symbolizes power and magic as it allowed Solomon to speak with animals and command the supernatural. It was the precursor design to the Star of David.

The Star of David

The Star of David, an important symbol of the Jewish faith, is a six-pointed star shaped from two equilateral triangles, one triangle placed over an upside-down triangle, also known as a hexagram. The ancient Muslims and Kabbalistic Jews created its design. It was later adopted by the Jewish people in the 17th century representing the shield of the Israel King David, symbolizing strength and protection . It now adorns the flag of Israel.

Hinduism has many symbols of stars. Let’s look at one of the most well known which is an eight pointed star.

The Star of Lakshmi

The Star of Lakshmi comes from the Hindu religion symbolizing the goddess of Lakshmi. It is a symbol of prosperity, both material and spiritual .

Symbol of Inspiration

Stars have inspired the creative side of human history since our ancestors first used a piece of burnt wood on a cave wall, drawing scenes they had lived and witnessed. Writers, poets, painters, and in more recent history, photographers have all tried to capture the splendor and mystery evoked by the stars.

Creations of Art

Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter during the late 19th century, was inspired by the twilight view from his bedroom window while receiving care at a mental asylum in France. The result was the infamous “Starry Night” painting.

Classical writers such as Shakespeare or the 19th Century’s Henry W. Longfellow borrowed stars for their metaphors and similes, connecting their poetry and writings with familiar skyscapes and symbolic meanings for their readers.

Distance in space is hard to comprehend. Stars can appear much closer than they actually are. In reality, the light from the nearest star to Earth, Proxima Centauri, takes 4.2 years to reach our eyes. Stars have always seemed unobtainable. If we could only get there, it must be heavenly. Hence the term “Reach for the stars!”

“Reach for the Stars”

Gold stars symbolize achievement, excellence , and sacrifice awarded for reaching the highest and most difficult positions and accomplishments. People may be described in their industry as “They are a star” at the pinnacle of their industry. Cultures award gold stars in academics, the military, and even showbiz success will warrant a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

• In paganism, it represents Earth, wind, fire, water, and spirit .
• In Christianity, it is known to symbolize the five holy wounds Jesus acquired during the crucifixion.
• It’s a symbol of the Five Pillars of Islam and, in other cultures, a symbol of achievement, power, success, and fame.

6-Pointed-Star

The six-pointed star, a hexagram, is most recognizable as the Star of David but there are many other cultures who have used the hexagram design such as the Buddhists Star of Peace . In the 1970’s the Star of Life became a universal symbol of “medical Emergency Services”.

8-Pointed-Star

The eight-pointed star, an octagram, is tied to the Greek and Roman Goddess Venus. In the Hindu culture, this star symbolizes the eight types of wealth: nourishment, health, mobility, patience, knowledge, prosperity, riches, and victory. To the Chinese, it represents life, from birth to death. For the Native Americans it symbolizes hope, protection and guidance.

9-Pointed-Star

The nine-pointed star, to the Ba’hai faith, is a symbol of unity and perfection. It also represents the Fruits of the Spirit in the Bible: joy, love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, and faithfulness.

Symbols are powerful instruments delivering a message or meaning in both conscious and subconscious ways. The next time you look at a flag, the emblem of an organization, a currency, or a company’s logo, take notice of the objects within the design. The symbols have a message and history, created in much the same way as the symbolism of stars.

Important Rasta Symbols and Their Meanings

Rasta Symbols are everywhere. Rastafari can be identified by the colors they wear, the way they dress, their diet and more.

Whether it’s the Star of David or the Rasta flag, the symbols of the Rastafari religion are strong reminders for believers.

You may recognize some popular Rasta symbols throughout society. But how much do you know about them? And What do these iconic Rasta Symbols mean?

For starters, Rasta symbols are an integral part of Rastafari beliefs and practices .

In this post, you are going to learn about some of the most important Rasta symbols which guide believers in this faith. By the end of this article, you will have a better understanding of the Rastafari religion and the symbols that shaped it, and made their way into western pop culture.

Popular Rasta Symbols

Basically, most Rastafari doctrines have specific symbols associated with them. Certainly, some of the most common Rasta symbols include the Ethiopian flag , Pan-African colors , and the Lion of Judah .

1. the original ethiopian and current rasta flag.

The Rastafari flag combines the Original Ethiopian flag and the present Rasta flag.

The Original Ethiopian flag has the colors red , green , and black , similar to the pan-African flag colors . However, the current Rasta flag has the symbol of the Lion of Judah and red , gold and green as the flag main colors. You can see an example of this pictured above.

In reality, the flag colors have important meanings.

Red represents the blood of dead activists, shed around the world during the struggle for liberation, equal rights and justice.  Gold symbolizes sunshine, religious freedom, and the natural wealth of Africa. Lastly,  Green represents Jah’s good Earth, and the fertile vegetation of the Promise Land , Ethiopia.

2. Rastafari Colors

In addition to being flag colors,  red , gold , and  green are some of the most important Rasta symbols.

They hold deep meanings for a lot of Rastafari, such as love, strength, peace and hope.  Rastafari use these colors to represent their faith, show their love for Jah, and to identify other Rastas by wearing these colors.

Do you know the correct order of the Rasta Colors?

If you guessed  red , gold , and  green ,  then you guessed right.

Admit it, you probably didn’t know that there was a correct order to the Rasta colors. In fact, the Rasta colors are taken from the original  Ethiopian flag , created by King Menilik I in 1897. Moreover, the nation reversed the colors, changing to the present order in 1914. The Ethiopian flag color order then became Green , Yellow,   followed by  Red . As any Rasta they will tell you, the order should always begins with Red, the blood sacrificed.

However, black is also a Rasta color. Taken from the Pan-African colors of red , black and green , they were the original Ethiopian flag colors. Black symbolizes the color of true Africans . However, depending on the person, black and white are optional colors.

Keep in mind that these Rasta symbols have different meanings for individual Rastas.

For example , if the color red is on the bottom, that means war to some, and green on the bottom means peace to others. It can also mean love, peace and brotherhood, and so on. So the meaning really depends on the person.

Bottom Line?

Black, Red, gold/yellow, green, are the colors of Rastafari Movement, in that order . Rastas love these colors and see them as spiritual, as they represent the Rastafari way of Livity .

Lastly, next time you see a Rasta, look to see if they are wearing any  Rasta Clothing.  The Rastafari love displaying these colors. They more than likely will be wearing a hat, a shirt, or an entire outfit signifying their devotion to the Rastafari movement.

3. Jah Rastafari

Rastafari believers refer to Haile Selassie I  to as “ Jah ,” a part of God’s name “ Jah Jehovah .” This is why you will hear the phrase “King Selassie I ( Jah Rastafari )” spoken by Rastafari.

Surprisingly, most people believe that it’s a short form of Jehovah, but it’s not. Jah is biblical. Check Psalm 68:4 and see.

But wait – there’s more

What Do Rastas Mean By “I and I”?

Rastas worship one God and that God is Jah . Moreover, Rastafari believe that Jah exist within every human being as the Holy Spirit.  Because of this belief, Rastas refer to themselves as “ I and I “. This is explained by the saying “ God is man and man is God “.  They say “ I and I ” instead of “ us “, “ you “, or “ them ” because it is a sign of oneness and equality with all people.

This saying is also one of the important Rasta symbols , since it indicates Jah and the Holy Spirit exist within every person.

For this reason, Rasta believers say they know Jah, not that they believe in Him.

The Rasta Symbol Jah can be found throughout the Rasta Culture, paired with other Rasta Symbols and phrases such as “ Jah Bless “.

Another famous Rasta symbol is Zion, the Biblical Heaven on Earth . That’s right!

In reality, they are referring to the earthly heaven where King Selassie reigned as the savior of Africans, the lost tribe of Judah. Therefore, Zion is a reference to Ethiopia, believed by some to also be the original birthplace of humankind! The Rastafari Movement uses  Zion as a symbol for the idea of blacks worldwide returning to Zion, the Promised Land, and Heaven on Earth.

Rastafari view Babylon as the ultimate Evil, and oppose it.

Quickly, Babylon is a term used to describe the oppressive and exploiting system of the materialistic modern western world (e.g. colonialism and global capitalism). Any “ authority ” is suspect, and most Rastas see them as manifestations of Babylon. Zion is the only refuge from Babylon.

If you immerse yourself in the Rasta culture enough, you will notice Zion  among the Rasta Symbols mentioned in a lot of reggae music , The best part is a lot of Reggae musicians’ names and songs also start with Jah.

Some great places where you can find references pointing to this iconic Rasta symbol are in Sacred Rastafari texts such as the Kebra Nagast . You’ll also find Zion in reggae songs like Zion Train by Bob Marley , and To Zion by Lauren Hill .

5. The Rastafari Diet is a Vegan Ital Diet

The ital diet is a very important aspect and among most important Rasta symbols of the religion. An Ital diet is a Vital diet, in literal translation Ital means Vital in the Rastafari dialect .

Furthermore, there are three distinct orders/sects in Rastafari, each having slightly different beliefs and symbols.  The Ital diet is required by the Nyahbinghi sect. In brief, the Nyabinghi sect is the oldest of all Rastafari orders , and all the other orders come from this sect.

(The other two  distinct orders and sects of Rastafari are the Twelve Tribes of Israel  sect and the Bobo Ashanti order. Keep in mind the branches of Rastafari are symbolic. Also, the Mansions   are important branches of Rastafari, referring to the sects of Rastafari and their different beliefs. It is an umbrella name for all other groups that belong to the Rastafari movement. Lest we forget, Howell headed the first branch in the U.S.)

So what does all this mean?

Rastas call their diet  The Ital Way . This means you follow a pure vegan diet.  It’s based on a natural way of cooking, so that you can keep the mind, body, and spirit cleansed and vital.

It’s simple to make this diet a part of your lifestyle.

Do these three things and you’ll find yourself living The Ital Way .

• Consume a plant based vegan die t.
• Avoid salts : Ital food is flavorful as is, so there’s no need to change the energy of the natural food by adding salt.
• Avoid chemicals : Do this by eating organic unprocessed foods. Rastas have been against pesticides since the 1940s.

Sounds easy, right? 

When it comes to this Rasta symbol, Natural is the only way. Since Rastas believe that Jah exists in all living things, following an Ital diet is important to Rastafari. Essentially, they believe “ you are what you eat “. Rastas only absorb positive energies from their food and reject consuming negative energies.

We could all use more Ital in out diet, because a pure diet like this increases vital energy in all people, Rasta or Not!

6. Cannabis/Marijuana Use

Commonly called “ ganja ,” marijuana is one of the most popular Rasta symbols associated with this religion. Certainly, it is widely associated with Reggae music and with Rastas.

However, it is not something anyone should mock, for using Ganja is sacred to Rastafari . They consider it a holy sacrament, similar to Communion to Christians. They use ganja for many reasons. The main reason is cleansing and opening up the mind, so that they can correctly reason with ways of this fallen world.  Rastas only use Ganja in a reverent and solemn way.

For example , before smoking the plant, a Rasta will say a prayer to Jah, their God Haile Selassie I. Additionally, a Rasta refers to smoking circles as “ reasoning sessions ” when they use Ganja in Nyabinghi.

A Nyabinghi session is much different from a casual marijuana smoking session which western people take part in. People in the West smoke marijuana for social and entertainment reasons. The smoker enjoys silly times of laughter and horseplay. This differs greatly from what takes place during a Nyabinghi.

A Nyabinghi session is a taken very seriously. A Rastafari would consider acting silly while smoking disrespectful, to both the herb, and Jah.

The Rastafari use of Ganja stems back to the beginning in Jamaica.  In 1941, The “first Rasta”, Leonard P. Howell, set up a Rasta community of sixteen hundred followers. This community was named Pinnacle . Howell introduced Rasta believers the properties of Ganja, which helped with their reasoning. Rastafari quickly turned to the Bible and found verses possibly mentioning the use of this Holy Plant.  From this, Rastafari infused Ganja into their culture.

Today, cannabis is becoming legalized all over the world, and more socially accepted, because it has medicinal properties. Rastafari had the right idea all along.

7. Patios Language

Patios is a Jamaican dialect that most Jamaicans and Rastas speak. It is not fully recognized as its own language. Some activists lobby to get Jamaican Patois recognized as one, though.

The British outlawed the use of native tongues in their Caribbean colonies. They did this to weaken the bonds that the African slaves had to their homelands and each other. The early settlers and slave owners were afraid that the slaves would conspire against them, or attempt escape.

Patois was a response to and rebellion against the slave codes. By not speaking in perfect English, blacks in Jamaica were rejecting the racist culture of their slave masters. Blacks resisted control from the moment they were taken from their homeland to the New World. Over time, their speech patterns evolved into a distinct dialect.

The Rastafari movement began in the 1930s to protest against capitalism, colonial oppression and exploitation of nature. Their ability to speak “in code” with their own dialect was instrumental to the movement’s spread and success. For this reason, the Rasta Dialect is a valuable symbol that’s rooted in the Rastafari culture.

8. Hair/Dreadlocks/’Locks

Hair is also another important icon of the Rasta faith. It symbolizes strength when long and dreaded, and weakness when cut short.

Wearing dreadlocks is a very outward physical symbol of Rastafari . Today, people call the style Dreadlocks, Sisterlocks, Dreads, and Natty Dreadlocks.

They are a spiritual expression to Rastafari, not just worn as a fashion statement. Conversely, in modern society many people wear dreadlocks as a personal expression. Of course, not all people who wear dreads are Rasta.

Naturally, dreadlocks originated in Africa. They were adopted by the Rastafari in the 1930’s, symbolizing their rebel against the Euro-centrism of the era. Of course, British controlled Jamaican society looked down on the natural African style, referring to as a “ dreadful ” look. The Rastafari, not swayed by British propaganda, adopted the term and evolved it into the phrase “dreadlocks”.

Here’s the deal.

You must grow dreadlocks if you want to be a Rastafari.

Rastafari grow their hair into dreadlocks because it is a part of the Nazarite Vow , from the Bible . Let me explain.

The Old Testament contains detailed rules about how to live “ in a manner pleasing to GOD ”. Rastafari today get their grooming and dietary restrictions from these biblical codes.

Rastafari look to this verse in the Bible:

“ They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard nor make any cuttings in their flesh. ” Leviticus 21:5

Basically, this verse makes Rastafari take the vow of the Nazarites. They believe it is wrong to shave or comb their hair. Instead, they grow it into long dreadlocks.

Also, Rastafari also look to the biblical tale of Samson and Delilah as a powerful lesson. In brief, Samson was a Nazarite with dreadlocks, and he loses his great strength when she cuts off his locks.

Dreadlocks are also popular because they resemble the main of a lion. This is significant because the Lion is a noble animal, as well as a humble creature. Skip ahead to 10 to learn more about The Lion of Judah.

But here’s the interesting thing. 

Since our hair contains our DNA, Rastafari also think it is vital they never cut their hair. They believe that their hair is an antenna that can receive and transmit energy. There’s even some science to back up these claims. We now know that our hair is a part of our nervous system, for example.

Colonial attitudes have influenced beauty standards for over five hundred years. blacks were shamed into straightening and cutting their magnificent hair, which naturally turns to dreadlocks.

You’re probably wondering….

How exactly do dreadlocks work?

Growing dreadlocks is simple. As a Rasta, all you have to do is not comb your hair. However, they still wash their hair to keep it clean.

To make modern dreadlocks, it requires a little more work, but it’s just as simple. To make dreadlocks for fashion, just twist sections of your hair with a  dread wax , and that’s basically it.

9. Rasta Music

Reggae music holds much symbolism for Rastafari and it’s rooted in the movement. Rasta music falls under the reggae genre. However,  Nyabinghi is traditional Rasta music, along with Roots Reggae, and Burru Drumming .

This is the music of the Rastafari movement. Most modern reggae contain much Rastafari symbolism. But traditional Rastas like to keep it old-school, and perform their rituals to the sounds of Nyabinghi, Burru Drumming, and Roots Reggae.

In brief, Nyabinghi is the predecessor to Reggae, and it shaped all reggae music as we know it today.

Rasta music is a spiritual type of music that is performed to praise and commune with Jah.

Additionally, Rastafari also reaffirm their rejection of Babylon through this musical expression. They also include recurrent lyrical themes such as poverty and resistance to government oppression in their music.

In fact, Reggae became popular during Haile Selassie I’s visit to Ethiopia in 1966. His visit made the Rastafari movement international, because people around the globe were exposed to this modern faith through reggae music.

Let’s face it.

If it weren’t for musicians like  Bob Marley and Peter Tosh , the Rastafari faith wouldn’t be widely known as it is today.

As a symbol, Rasta music is believed to have healing properties when used in a spiritual manner. Most Rastas believe that physical ailments have their root in the spiritual realm. Dancing to their sacred drumming mends the spirit, and therefore, the body as well.

10. Lion of Judah

The Lion of Judah is another irrefutably popular Rasta symbol. You may have recognized it from the Rasta flag.  Believers also call this Rasta symbol  The Conquering Lion and the Lamb .

To Rastafari, the Lion of Judah symbolizes many things.

For example:

The Lion of Judah is known as a symbol of Zion, the Promised Land. Equally importantly, it represents Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. He is regarded as a king in the L ine of Judah , therefore, he was give the title the  Lion of Judah .

But one thing’s for sure!

This symbol is mostly associated with the Bible’s Twelve Tribes of Israel. Look in Genesis 49:9 , and you see Jacob call his son Judah, the “ Young Lion .”

The Lion of Judah also symbolizes Jah. In Revelation 5:5 , the Lion of Judah opens the Book with Seven Seals. In the same verse, the Bible mentions Jesus Christ is the Lamb that conquers the Dragon. However, to Rastafari, the European powers are “the Dragon” that Emperor Haile Selassie I, the Lion of Judah conquered.

In Rastafari iconography, the Lion of Judah stands proudly with one paw up, often holding the Flag of Ethiopia and wearing a crown, that of the Emperor, with an Orthodox Christian cross on top .

Other than symbolizing Zion, King Selassie, God, and The Twelve Tribes of Israel , it also symbolizes Rastafari Livity. This means it’s a symbol of living the Rasta way, following the movement’s laws and rules, like following an Ital diet, avoiding negativity, and living a peaceful life. Furthermore, it means Good must prevail over Evil, and even more things, depending on the person.

Due to its association with the Tribe of Judah and Haile Selassie, the Lion of Judah will continue to be a vital Rastafari symbol.

11. Star of David

The Rasta Star of David symbolizes the Rastafari faith. Also known as the Star of Solomon , Rastas pair this symbol with the Lion of Judah.

This is a very common symbol on Rastafari clothing, art, flags and many other Rasta related items. Additionally, it’s a Rasta symbol indicating the divine and chosen status of the House of Selassie.

The Hebrews of today also use this as a sacred symbol, representing the Jewish faith and even the State of Israel, on their flag. However, this symbol is even older than the Old Testament.

Rastafari believed that their leader, Haile Selassie, was a descendant of King David and King Solomon. This is why they use the Star of David as their symbol and why King Selassie I is represented by this icon.

But here’s something really interesting!

The Star of David was originally used as a geometric figure and picture on David’s army’s shields. “Magen David” in Hebrew literally means “The shield of David.”

However, some say the star has no direct connection with David himself, but was first used by “Kabbalists” (Jewish mystics) between 1300-1700 in Europe. They believe that the shape of the human aura, a “merkaba” looks, from above, like two rotating triangles, sometimes forming this pattern. Perhaps the merkaba is  King David’s Shield?

It wasn’t until the 17th Century that this symbol was identified with Jewish people, beginning in Prague. Of course, it gained infamy in Nazi death camps during WWII.

12. A Hand Gesture Imitated by Rastas

In relation to the Star of David, another important symbol is a diamond-like Hand Gesture that Rastafari copied from Haile Selassie. This hand gesture known as  the Seal of Solomon .

Selassie made this pose with his hands to show that he is the Manifestation of Divinity.

Some Rastafari followers believe this symbolic way of holding his hands together is his sovereign right as regent and blood line of the king and prophet David himself.  However, some followers believe that the seal of Solomon hand gesture is misused today by Rastas, thinking that it should only be used by a true heir, and only AFTER coronation, not other people.

With this in min,d Rastafari still use this symbol when praying to Jah and praising their God, Haile Selassie.

This symbol has two meanings, based on the upward or downward position of the point.

The downward facing triangle  shape means ‘ the divine on earth ‘.

While the upward facing triangle  represents man’s aspiration to divinity.

Together, the two triangles stand for ONENESS WITH JAH.

It is also known as the symbol of the Holy Trinity, and a universal sign of peace. It symbolizes unity, and Rastas use it when honoring (H.I.M) His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I.

Other Important Rastafari Symbols

Now that we have covered the most iconic Rasta Symbols and gave you a better understanding why they are so valued, let’s briefly cover four more Rasta Symbols, which you may know and recognize from Rasta culture and society.

First up,  The Five-pointed black star,  which you may know from flags and Rasta clothing.

Another symbol that you make recognize is the Ankh , its a Rasta symbol that represents life and further livity.

Rastafari Fest,  such as  Shashamene , a festival that remembers the return of Africans to their roots, and Grounation Day , a festival that takes place on every April 21, to celebrate the first and only arrival of King Haile Selassie I to Jamaica, using music, prayer, and chanting. For Rastas, it is a joyous day of celebration. Similarly, the  Reggae Music Fest  is another symbol that you may recognize from Rastafari culture. They are a symbol of the modern faith, when Rastas from across the globe gather to chant to Nyabinghi, listing to spiritual music, and celebrate their faith.

Lastly, the Divinity of the Self  is a Rasta symbol, because Rastas value peace, and they are aware of the vibrations they consume and surround themselves with. The Divinity of the Self is a symbol because this helps Rastas cultivate a defense against the uncertainty and insecurity that exists within society.

Eva Evans , a TikTok star known for her videos about living in New York City and the creator of the web series “Club Rat,” has died. She was 29.

Evans’ sister, Lila Joy, announced the news in an Instagram post on Sunday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

“Yesterday my family received news that our sweet, fabulous, creative, caring, hilarious Eva, my beautiful sister, has died,” Joy wrote. “After 24 hours, I still find myself in a constant cycle of denial and acceptance, so I know how unbelievable and hard to process this news will be … I wish I had Eva here now to refer to because she would have better words and know how to say what I don’t.”

Star wars' upcoming jedi origin movie can reveal the ancient history of starkiller base.

Starkiller Base has an extensive history that links to the Jedi Order, meaning Star Wars’ upcoming Jedi origin film can detail its past.

• Star Wars' Dawn of the Jedi movie will explore the beginnings of the Order, the latter of which has been confirmed to be tied to Ilum.
• After the release of The Force Awakens, it was confirmed that Starkiller Base was built into Ilum's core.
• The Dawn of the Jedi movie could include origin stories for several Jedi-related aspects, including lightsaber construction via the exploration of Ilum and thus, Starkiller Base.

The upcoming Jedi origin film, tentatively titled Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi , could detail the ancient history of Starkiller Base. Starkiller Base was introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a major weapon in the early timeline of Star Wars' First Order . Despite being a major part of the first sequel movie, Starkiller Base received little in the way of proper exploration, contributing to complaints that the sequel trilogy is among Star Wars' worst .

That said, while the sequel films did not explore much about Starkiller, the opportunity remains for upcoming Star Wars movies to do so. One such film was announced alongside Dave Filoni's New Republic film and Rey's New Jedi Order story. Through this project, Star Wars' Dawn of the Jedi story , the ancient history of Starkiller Base can finally be explored in a way that ties several sections of the Star Wars franchise together.

Starkiller Base Was Actually The Sacred Jedi Planet Ilum

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens , Starkiller Base was shown as a barren, cold, and icy planet. The film failed to divulge where the planet was in the galaxy, though the novelization of Episode VII revealed a massive fact about the superweapon. The novelization confirmed that Starkiller Base was built into the core of the planet Ilum, a planet vital to the Jedi Order for generations.

In Star Wars: The Clone Wars , among other projects, Ilum was shown as an icy planet where Jedi younglings would find Kyber crystals to construct their first lightsaber . After Starkiller Base was revealed as Ilum, it was similarly revealed that the Kyber foundations of the planet were being used to partially power the superweapon used by the First Order to destroy the New Republic. However, these details were left out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens , meaning future Star Wars movies have the opportunity to explore the base's history.

Will James Mangold's Dawn Of The Jedi Show The Discovery Of Ilum?

In the wider areas of Star Wars canon, it has been confirmed that Ilum was discovered in the earliest days of the Jedi Order. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is set to focus on exactly this: the beginning of the Jedi Order and their connection with the Force. As such, it could be the case that the discovery of Ilum and its Kyber-based properties are included in James Mangold's upcoming movie .

It would be equally logical for Ilum - a place confirmed as synonymous with first lightsabers - to be included in some capacity.

This would certainly make sense, as a story about Star Wars' first Jedi will likely include the origin of many aspects audiences have come to associate with the Order. For instance, the origins of Jedi lightsabers would certainly be a logical inclusion of Mangold's movie. If this is the case, it would be equally logical for Ilum - a place confirmed as synonymous with first lightsabers - to be included in some capacity. Through this, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi can provide the backstory and history of Starkiller Base via the founding of Ilum, something the sequels failed to adequately explore.

Paris Hilton shared the meaningful reason she chose the middle name Marilyn for her daughter, London, five months after she and her husband, Carter Reum , welcomed their baby girl via surrogate .

“I wanted to honor my grandmother Marilyn [J. Hilton],” the “Cooking with Paris” star explained in Monday’s episode of her “I Am Paris” podcast on iHeart . “I think it’s such a beautiful name.”

Paris, 43, also noted that her son, Phoenix, got his middle name, Barron, from her late grandfather Barron Hilton.

“It was just an honor of both of them, and I love them so much,” she said, adding that she chose Marilyn as London’s middle name because she “love[s] Marilyn Monroe as well.”

Marilyn and Barron wed in 1947 and remained married until her death in 2004. He died in 2019. The couple had eight children, including Paris’ father, Rick Hilton.

The DJ reiterated how she had dreamed of having a daughter named after one of her “favorite cities in the world” ever since she was a little girl.

“I think it also sounds so cute together, Paris and London, and it’s just such a beautiful and unique name,” she continued.

The hotel heiress also discussed the significance of London’s birthday being Nov. 11.

“Obviously, as you all know, 11/11 is such an important date to me, [an] important time,” she began. “Carter and I were married on 11/11. My media company is named 11:11 Media. I make a wish every single day at 11:11. So for my daughter to be born on that date was just magical and so special.”

She added, “Perfect birthday for my little princess.”

Paris then expressed how she sees similarities between her daughter and her sister, Nicky Hilton.

“I can already tell that she is very serious and so sweet. She reminds me so much of my sister, Nicky,” she said. “When I look at my baby pictures, Phoenix is my twin and then little London looks like Nicky.”

Primary in Pennsylvania is here: A 2024 election guide from ballot issues to House races

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have essentially clinched their party’s 2024 nominations for the White House. But Pennsylvania voters on Tuesday will cast their ballots in a slew of contentious and potentially decisive congressional and state races that are still sure to make waves as the campaign chugs toward November.

The primary results in this pivotal swing state are certain to reveal insights about the major issues shaping the general election, namely on abortion and the Israel-Hamas war.

All 17 members of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation are running for re-election in 2024 and three of those incumbents are facing serious primary challengers. Several others are also watching to see who their opponent will be in the fall. And, in some cases, the outcome of Tuesday’s races could determine which way those seats swing on Election Day. 

While it's a far-flung possibility, which party has a majority in Pennsylvania's congressional delegation also could have major implications on the presidential race. If the 2024 White House election is contested or tied, each state’s congressional delegation will have a single vote in deciding the winner. Currently, Democrats have a 9-8 advantage — meaning one general election race in November could make all the difference.  

At the state level, Democrats are hoping to hold on to their majority in the state House and take control of the state Senate. Republicans currently hold a 28-22 majority in the Senate, and Democrats are hoping to flip at least three seats to make it 25-25, giving them the majority via a tie-breaking vote from Democratic Lieutenant Gov. Austin Davis.

Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position, once held by Democratic Gov.  Josh Shapiro . Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position.   

Candidates across these races are running on some of the biggest issues facing the country — from abortion to the war in Gaza to election integrity. And the candidates whom Democratic and Republican voters pick on Tuesday could give larger insights about their views on topics that appear central to this fall's general election.  

Here's a look at what to expect in Tuesday's primary. 

Abortion at play in Pennsylvania races  

Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race and in the Republican primary for the 1 st Congressional District.  

All five Democratic candidates for attorney general have committed to protecting the right to abortion and access to FDA-approved medications such as mifepristone . Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion. As attorney general, both would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide. 

In Pennsylvania’s 1 st Congressional District, longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances — including in cases of rape and incest.  

Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic.  The incident reportedly inspired him to run for public office. A devout Catholic, Houck co-founded the men's religious group The King's Men. He's worked as an author, motivational speaker and human resources manager.

Fitzpatrick is a moderate Republican. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020.  

The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.  

Pennsylvania Democrats clash on Israel-Hamas war  

In Pennsylvania’s 12 th District, which includes Pittsburgh and some of its suburbs, first-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, is facing a primary challenge over her opposition to the Israel-Hamas war. Bhavini Patel, a more moderate Democratic congressional candidate has tried to closely align herself with President Joe Biden. 

Lee, who is affiliated with the “squad,” was among the early advocates in Congress calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. She has been an outspoken opponent of providing U.S. military aid to Israel. 

Patel is a 29-year-old municipal council member who also describes herself as a progressive. She has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts and unrepresentative of a district that is home to a large Jewish community. 

The election on Tuesday could reveal just how salient the issue of the war is for Democratic voters — particularly in swing areas of the country. It may also forecast how other progressives facing similar challenges from moderate Democrats could fair in their races.  

What are the key Pennsylvania House races to watch? 

There are several other high-profile House primary races to watch in Pennsylvania.  

Six Democrats are competing for the chance to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, which includes Harrisburg and Hershey.  

Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party, with members including Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Perry was also a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

While the area leans Republican, Democrats say they can win over independents and moderate conservatives in the area with a message centered around protecting democracy. They plan to tie Perry to Trump and conservative extremism.  

Out of the six Democratic candidates running to unseat Perry, news anchor Janelle Stelson and former "Top Gun" fighter pilot Mike O’Brien appear to have the best shot. The other candidates include Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels, progressive businessman John Broadhurst and former radio executive Black Lynch.  

To the northeast of Harrisburg, in the Lehigh Valley, three Republicans are competing to take on Democratic Rep. Susan Wild. Her seat, in Pennsylvania’s 7th District, is a top target for Republicans in November.  

Wild barely eked out a victory against her Republican opponent, Lisa Scheller, in 2022. She won 51-49.  

Pennsylvania’s state legislature hangs in the balance  

If Pennsylvania Democrats hold their narrow majority in the state House and win the state Senate in November, it would give Gov. Shapiro enormous power to pass his agenda in the last two years of his term.  

It would also mark the first time in three decades that the party controlled the state Senate; Tuesday’s elections could determine whether that’s possible.  

Because the local districts tend to lean Democratic or Republican, the results of the primary elections can have a large sway on the race.  

Democrats currently hold a two-seat majority in the state House, and Republicans hold a five-seat majority in the state Senate.
