Ohio is so backwards. Curiosity has flown out the window.

Why is ohio so backwards.

How did we get here ? How did Ohio become such a backward thinking state?

Watching committee hearings on "The Ohio Channel" I was able to hear and see a committee member actually ask fo r scientific proof of climate change.

My concern is with Ohio as a state with any number of universities and Ohio State University just blocks away, we voted in people too lazy or backward to get firsthand information.

Now I hope and pray. Donald Trump has destroyed the Ohio I knew.

The same can be said for the carbon capture and trans student laws.

Are none of these people curious enough about life to ask an expert or visit a research lab?

The country is full of labs who are not pawns of industry.

If you are not educated, go ask. Anyone can ask questions. But don't just believe the one who makes you feel good.

Jim Clark, Worthington

Why should I pay for your education?

President Joe Biden's recommendation to eliminate student debt sounds like a great idea, especially if you are a college student with debt.

It is funny how all these years no one thought, "hey, why should we have to pay for our college education?" Not until Biden ran for office and felt this might be a good way to win an election.

College is not free.

What to know: Biden's latest student-loan forgiveness plan brings questions for borrowers.

The professors need to get paid; the costs of maintaining the programs and buildings do not come cheap.

If we eliminate student debt how will we be able to keep our colleges going with no income?

Oh, that's right, the federal government will subsidize everything. Wrong!

The only way the government subsidizes is by taxing.

Now why would I want to pay for someone else's education when I have already paid for mine and my children?

Think about it.

What do you think? How to submit a letter to the editor for The Columbus Dispatch

No longer proud to be a Buckeye

After Columbia, Yale and, recently, Harvard’s stand against pro-Palestinian protesters camping on campus grounds and University of Southern California's racist stand to rescind the well-earned valedictorian address by Asna Tabassum, comes Ohio State University president’s threat and warning to the would-be protesters in his backyard.

Like the administrators of USC and Ivy League colleges, he, too, is using the dog whistle of ‘campus safety and security’ concern.

OSU "Will not compromise.' Ohio State president on safety as campuses face Gaza war protests

Do these protesters usually come armed, intent on vandalizing the school property, hurting and harming university personnel or campus police?

They only wish to highlight the plight of people in Gaza. Thanks to the total complicity of the Biden administration in Israel’s war with Hamas, so far more than 34,000 people have been killed, two-thirds of whom are children and women.

Through its president’s letter, Ohio State has chosen to join other schools trying to muzzle the voices on the campus against the genocide in Gaza. It mirrors the attitude of mainstream American media, which have chosen to shun pro-Palestinian guests but have no qualms in welcoming pro-Israelis who shamelessly drum the justification of carnage in Gaza.

I was proud to be part of OSU (1991-1994) and that two of my three children are Ohio State alums.

Not anymore.

Shame on OSU and its president for taking anti-student and anti-free speech stand behind pathetic and flimsy garb of safety and security. This is the antithesis of an educational entity in a free world.

Patriotism, loyalty to America key

Our politicians say our immigration problem requires comprehensive legislation.

History proves that we had an immigration process that would significantly reduce current border invasion and the anti-American sentiment that is so prevalent.

More: My generation is being raised to hate America — it’s time to stand up for our history

The requirements for entry, immigration, and naturalization in effect from 1795-1956 required a “ declarant” to pledge under oath to renounce all allegiance to any foreign governments and become a loyal U.S. citizen.

This was known as a declaration of intention. The declaration of intention was eliminated in 1956.

In addition, residence required for citizenship went from two years to five years and required ". . . three years before admission as citizens, to uphold, support and defend the Constitution, to bear arms as required by law against all enemies, foreign and domestic." This was known as the Oath of Allegiance.

There are more than 1 0 million people living illegally in our country who have never executed a Declaration of Intention or pledged an Oath of Allegiance.

Patriotism and loyalty to America and its founding ideals has been waning as the number of people seeking to enter the United States illegally continues to rise.

Ousted federal election official gave himself a pay raise and misused funds for Harvard classes, watchdog says

Last Day Of Early Voting In Michigan Presidential Primary politics political

Facing yet another contentious presidential election year , a federal bipartisan commission tasked with strengthening election security around the country quietly confirmed in January that its third executive director had departed the agency in as many years.

Now, a recently released government watchdog’s investigation summary shows why.

Steven M. Frid, the former executive director of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission , was fired late last year after he gave himself a big pay raise and spent taxpayer money on Harvard University leadership classes without approval, an inspector general report found.

“Frid improperly sought and acquired an increase in his own pay of $31,450 annually without the awareness of EAC Commissioners, who were his supervisors,” according to an inspector general’s investigation summary , dated April 5 and made public Thursday.

Frid, who until the time of his pay boost was receiving an annual salary of $172,100, was able to give himself the raise “by applying for and receiving `critical pay’ authority from the Office of Personnel Management” unbeknownst to his bosses, the summary states.

The investigation also found that Frid enrolled in three Harvard leadership training courses last summer, at a cost of $28,300 to the agency, without first getting required approval from commissioners. Frid also failed to report 96 hours of vacation and other days off last year, the summary states.

Frid, 41, did not immediately return a message from NBC News on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the EAC said late Tuesday afternoon she would forward a request for comment to commission officials, but the agency did not provide a statement about the investigation by close of business.

Established in 2002 by the Help America Vote Act, prompted by the “hanging chad” controversy during the 2000 presidential election, the EAC provides funds and other assistance to state election offices to improve the administration and security of federal elections.

The EAC is supervised by four commissioners nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, with former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump each successfully nominating two commissioners who are still serving.

The four commissioners supervise the agency’s executive director, who oversees a staff of 75 other full-time employees and an annual budget that’s $27.7 million this year. The agency has experienced heavy turnover among its top staff members in recent years.

In initial news reports about Frid’s departure, the EAC didn’t explain why he had left the agency.

According to the summary made public last week, the commissioners unanimously voted to fire Frid on Dec. 27 after the EAC’s inspector general informed them of the status of the investigation into allegations surrounding him. The findings, which did not turn up any evidence that Frid provided false statements when applying for approval to boost his own pay, were referred to the Justice Department, “which declined to pursue the matter,” the summary states.

Frid, who had served less than a year in the top post, had previously worked for several federal agencies, including the Department of Education and Secret Service.

According to his LinkedIn profile — which cites among Frid’s educational achievements an executive leadership certificate earned last year from Harvard — Frid’s job status as of Tuesday was listed as “#OPENTOWORK.”

vikings top-30

Top 30 visits  aren’t  an exact science on who a team will take, but it shows at least a slight interest in every player brought in.

Every team gets to bring in 30 players (as  I’m  sure you figured out in the name Top 30)  teams  also get to bring in local players, whether they went to high school or college in the state. You get 30 visits from around the country and could visit with the entire University of Minnesota roster if  that’s  what general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wants to do.

In 2023  the Minnesota Vikings drafted three players that took the trip to Minnesota for a top 30 visit: Jordan Addison, Mekhi Blackmon, and DeWayne McBride. So, odds are, the Vikings will draft at least one of these players, so it’s good to get familiar with them now.  These reports were compiled on Si.com by Will Ragatz. I’m expanding and giving more detail on these players. With that being said, here are every reported top 30 visits as of Friday, April 19.

Every Minnesota Vikings Top-30 Visit

Byron murphy ii dt texas- reported by ian rapoport.

An almost certain first-round pick , Murphy played at a high level for Texas in 2023. Murphy was first team All-Big12 and Big 12 Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year. If  the Vikings  can’t  get a quarterback and keep pick 11 , Murphy is a likely possibility .

Quinyon Mitchell CB Toledo- Reported by Dane Brugler

A three-star prospect out of high school, Mitchell committed to Toledo  and dominated and separated  himself early from MAC competition.  Mitchell is  Toledo’s  all-time leader in pass breakups, showing impeccable ball skills. His stock took off at the combine, running a 4.33 40-yard dash  along with  a 38-inch vertical, showing off his explosiveness.  He’s  another player  who’s  a slam-dunk first-round pick , and the Vikings would likely have to take him at pick 11.

Dallas Turner DE Alabama- Reported by Tom Pelissero

Turner is one of the more high-profile defensive players in this draft.  He’s  the betting favorite to be the first defensive player off the board , and for good reason. While  he’s not the biggest guy at only 247 pounds, he sure makes up for it in explosiveness. At the combine, he ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, with a 40.5-inch vertical and 10.07-inch broad jump, which all rank  near the top of all defensive ends.

Charles Turner III IOL LSU- Reported by Darren Wolfson

Turner  is viewed  as a late-round or undrafted free agent. He played center for Heisman-winner Jayden Daniels and LSU during the 2023 season. Turner tested well at the combine, having 34-inch arms, with explosive jumps and a good shuttle time, but  will  have to overcome his lack of size.

Marshawn Kneeland DE Western Michigan- Reported by Tony Pauline

Another high-profile MAC prospect,   Kneeland  has been picking up steam throughout the last couple of weeks. He was Second Team All-MAC while leading the Broncos with 4.5 sacks in 2023. An undersized but explosive athlete (you may be sensing a trend here)  he  had great vertical and broad jumps, showing off explosion and burst,  paired with   great agility testing in the shuttle and three-cone drills. Kneeland is viewed  around the league as a second-round pick, which the Vikings currently  don’t  have.

Taki Taimani DT Oregon- Reported by Aaron Wilson

Taimani, the 330-pound senior at Oregon  played in every game in 2023 for Oregon, starting in nine. A run-stuffing specialist, PFF graded him at 82.3 in their run-defense grade. Taimaini  wasn’t  a combine invite, and  the testing he did  at  Oregon’s  pro day  doesn’t  flash great athleticism.  He’s  viewed  as an undrafted free agent.

McCallan Castles TE Tennessee- Reported by Ryan Fowler

Castles, a sixth-year senior, finished his last year of collegiate football with 283 yards and five touchdowns. Castles is seen as a late-round pick to an undrafted free agent, as he  didn’t  produce  a lot . Tennessee moved him around from in-line tight end to the slot, and he tested well at the combine, so  there’s  upside to be unlocked.

Spencer Rolland OT North Carolina (local)- Reported by Darren Wolfson

Rolland, the Apple Valley alum, tested  fairly  average at the combine. A two-star prospect out of high school, he committed to Harvard and played there for four years before transferring to North Carolina for the last two. He started every game for the Tar  Heels,  and projects as an undrafted free agent.

Khristian Boyd DT Northern Illinois- Reported by Darren Wolfson

Boyd has been on the  Viking’s  radar for a while now, with the two having meetings starting months ago. He  wasn’t  invited to the combine but tested at  UNI’s pro day. His 28.5-inch vertical and eight-foot-two-inch broad jump don’t show a ton of explosiveness, and with his arms only measuring 31 5/8 inches long, he has to use his power to hold up with offensive linemen. He’s  viewed  as a late-round prospect.

Dillon Johnson RB Washington- Reported by Ryan Fowler

Johnson is known to most who pay attention to college football, rushing for almost 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns for  an extremely  dynamic Huskies offense.  One of the  tougher  players in this draft,  Johnson  played in the National Championship with a knee and foot injury that clearly hobbled him but gutted through anyway.

Erick All TE Iowa- Reported by Ryan Fowler

After committing to Michigan out of high school, he played there for four years before injuring his back and required spinal surgery. He transferred to Iowa for a fifth  year  where he led the team in receiving while only playing in seven games due to an ACL tear. He  didn’t  test because of the knee injury, so the athletic numbers are unknown, but he showed flashes of being a solid athlete. The injuries are  worrisome , and he  isn’t  the most physical player.  He’s  viewed  as a mid-to-late day three pick.

Donovan  Jennings OT South Florida- Reported by Tony Pauline

Jennings, a sixth-year senior, played all six seasons at South Florida. He set a school record in games played for USF  with  most of those snaps at left tackle. With 33-inch arms,  he  looks to convert to the interior once on an NFL roster. He projects as a late-round pick to an undrafted free agent.

Qwan’tez Stiggers CB Toronto Argonauts (CFL)- Reported by Aaron Wilson

After a long journey of being overlooked in high school and quitting football altogether , he wound  up playing in the CFL for the 2023 season.  He won the Most Outstanding Rookie award in the CFL, and since he  didn’t  play any college football,  he’s  allowed to declare for the NFL draft. He had a pro day at B.E.S.T Academy, his old high school, in Atlanta. Stiggers ran a 4.45 40-yard dash with a 1.52 10-yard split. At  5’11 ”  and 205 pounds he   doesn’t  have the  biggest  build. With his short area quickness  along  with his determination and ability to overcome challenges,  he’s  an exciting middle-of-day-three prospect .
