52 Tennessee Quotes, Captions, Slogans, One-Liners and Sayings

Tennessee – the Volunteer State. It is a state synonymous with country music and is historically one of the major flashpoints of the Civil War. Many of these 52 Tennessee Quotes revolve around those associations.

Tennessee boasts famous natives: Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Samuel L. Jackson,  Justin Timberlake, Morgan Freeman, and Kathy Bates are just a few. It is also often the butt of many ribbings and jokes – some of which we mention here. Music also informs its character more than past tragedies.

Tennessee is a  “meeting place” – a translation of the Native American “tana-See”.  Let’s take a look at some of this state’s most interesting mentions in quotes, sayings, and other Tennessee phrases.

Side note: If you’re visiting Tennessee, why not take a look at some of these amazing Airbnbs or even a few superb Tennessee glamping options!

Quotes About Tennessee People and Culture

Tennessee is a state that is bordered by eight other states! If traveling from the North East by land, you have to pass through here to get to the South – Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia – or the west – Arizona and Missouri.

Yet, the people of Tennessee are clearly a culture unto themselves. It is, perhaps unsurprisingly and by way of example, where the tow truck was invented, among other things. Perhaps the laid-back, classic country atmosphere of the state makes it seem like it has a friendly, somewhat detached personality.

On the other hand, it is also home to the most visited national park in the country, the first-ever bottled Coca-Cola, and 30 species of salamanders (which feels random). This is what some well-known people had to say about it.

1) “We are famous for our three grand divisions of East, Middle, and West Tennessee, represented by the three stars on our flag. It is important however to remember that the blue circle around the three stars on our flag represents the unity of our state. I believe that Tennesseans have much more that unites us than divides us.” – Bill Lee

2)   “i think, being from east tennessee, you’re kinda born with a little lonesome in your soul, in your blood. you know you’ve got that appalachian soul.” – ashley monroe, 3) “i love memphis, i guess you could say, in the way that you love a brother even if he does sometimes puzzle and sadden and frustrate you. say what you want about it, it’s an authentic place. i was born and raised in memphis, and no matter where i go, memphis belongs to me, and i to it.” – hampton sides.

PRESENTED BY TENNESSEE TOURISM

The essential guide to visiting Tennessee

Here’s everything you need to know before exploring the Volunteer State—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

Bars and Music Clubs at night in Downtown Nashville, Tennessee.

Why you must visit Tennessee

Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Lookout Mountain . Vibrant big cities and charming small towns. Country music in Nashville and the blues in Memphis . Tennessee whiskey   and Nashville hot chicken .

Best time to visit

Spring: Warm weather brings colorful wildflowers, blooming magnolias, and flowering redbuds. Enjoy the bloom boom at the Flower   &   Food Festiva l at Dollywood or Nashville ’s Cheekwood . In April, Mule Day in Columbia features livestock races and Appalachian music, crafts, and food.

Summer: There’s a great debate about whether those glow-by-night insects are fireflies or lightning bugs , but regardless, you’ll find them making summer nights in Tennessee a little brighter, particularly in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The state is geographically landlocked, but visitors can still make a splash by launching a boat in Nashville’s Percy Priest Lake , whitewater rafting along East Tennessee’s Nolichucky River , or chasing more than 150 waterfalls in Cookeville .

Long exposure image shows synchronous fireflies under a forest canopy in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Autumn: Leaf peepers will love Tennessee’s orange, red, and golden hues in the fall. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers more than 800 miles of trails to explore by foot, or take a scenic drive along the Natchez Trace Parkway that begins in Nashville and winds south into Mississippi . Thanks to colorblind viewfinders , installed at lookouts statewide, more people can see fall foliage.

Winter: Get cozy during colder months at one of the state’s mountain hotels and resorts. Many flock to Gatlinburg during winter for a chalet stay in the mountains or skiing at Obe r . Other overnight choices include the cabins of Windy Hill Farm , the plush wellness resort Blackberry Farm , or Coffee Ridge Resort , a new mountaintop retreat with a spa, fly-fishing, and lodgings.

Lay of the land

Major cities: Music is the common thread through Tennessee’s biggest cities, with country artists performing in every honky-tonk on Nashville’s Broadway and the blues blaring down Memphis ’ Beale Street . Adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy Chattanooga ’s rock climbing and mountain biking, and Knoxville —home to the University of Tennessee —for its forested hiking trails.

Athletes compete in the swim portion of an Ironman in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Small towns: Johnson City is a jumping-off point for hiking and biking, plus a few sites related to 20th-century mobsters like Al Capone . Visit Franklin   for its     charming   main street lined with shops and restaurants, plus battlefields, hospitals, and historic homes related to the American Civil War .

Tennessee Whiskey Trail:   The   Tennessee Whiskey Trail   maps 26 of the state’s distilleries, including the famed   Jack Daniel’s Distillery   in Lynchburg. Visit the   Nearest Green Distillery   in Shelbyville , which pays tribute to Daniel’s original mentor and the first known African American master distiller, Nathan “Nearest” Green .

Getting around

By plane: Nashville International Airport (BNA) is the state’s largest, with 19 passenger airlines offering routes throughout the United States and nonstop international flights to London , Canada , and Cancun . Memphis International Airport (MEM) offers nonstop flights to cities around the U.S. and Cancun. Smaller regional airports include Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) and Chattanooga’s Chattanooga Airport (CHA).

By car: Tennessee has more than 1,200 miles of interstate highways , allowing travel by car to major cities and neighboring states. Major routes include I-65 from north to south , I-40 from east to west , and the slow and scenic Natchez Trace Parkway which winds from Nashville to Tupelo, Mississippi.

By train: Tennessee offers one passenger train route connecting Memphis to both Chicago and New Orleans via Amtrak .

Know before you go

Cultural History: Tennessee is the ancestral homeland of two Indigenous groups: the Chickasaw in the west and the Cherokee in the east. The name Tennessee is derived from a Cherokee village called Tanasi. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail runs across the state. To learn more about Tennessee’s Indigenous history, discover mounds at Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park in West Tennessee and the Mound Bottom State Archaeological Area near Nashville, or visit the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum that dives into Tennessee’s Cherokee history.

Tennessee was the last state to join the Confederacy during the American Civil War, though residents in the east remained loyal to the Union. Outside of Virginia , Tennessee saw the most fighting of any state. Many preserved sites are available to visit today, including one of the war’s deadliest battlefields, Shiloh National Military Park .

Tennessee cast the deciding vote that ratified the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. Nashville’s historic Hermitage Hotel housed the lobbyists from both sides of the suffrage movement and has historic artifacts throughout the property. The state also holds tragic significance in the Civil Rights movement. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated at Memphis’ Lorraine Motel, which is now the National Civil Rights Museum . Following the Brown   v.   Board of Education   Supreme Court ruling stating state-sanctioned segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, Clinton High School in East Tennessee became the first in the South to integrate classes. Learn more about the tumultuous transition at the Green McAdoo Cultural Center .

Cuisine: No one leaves Tennessee hungry. Southern soul food and Memphis-style barbecue are primary draws for visitors. Try an iconic “meat and three” plate, choosing between one protein option—usually including fried chicken, catfish, or pot roast—and a collection of vegetables. We use the term “vegetables” loosely here, as options include anything from macaroni and cheese to baked apples and fried okra.

Festivals: This musical state hosts a range of tuneful festivals, including Bonnaroo Music   &   Arts Festival in Manchester, CMA Fest in Nashville, and Beale Street Music Fest in Memphis (paused for 2024).

LGBTQ+: In the 2023 24/7 Wall St. report for LGBTQ+ friendly states, Tennessee ranked last. The state’s conservative lawmakers have passed discriminatory bills impacting transgender people and prohibiting public education institutions from requiring implicit bias training. Major cities like Nashville and Memphis regularly host Pride events, such as the Nashville Pride Pageant and the Nashville Pride Festival each June, or run the Rainbow Dash 5K in Memphis each March.

How to visit sustainably

Outdoors: Tennessee State Parks have implemented “ Go Green With Us ” guidelines, which focus on conservation and sustainable operations. The program encourages visitors to lower energy usage by turning off lights when not needed, planting trees to provide shade, and unplugging appliances when not in use, along with efforts like planting community gardens and using sustainably produced and packaged products.

Dining: With vast farmlands in Tennessee, it’s not difficult to find restaurants that source their ingredients locally. Try Nashville’s Miel , which saved more than 12,000 pounds of compostable material from landfills in 2023, or The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge. Dating from 1830, The Old Mill grinds 700,000 pounds of corn, grits, and other grains annually to be used in breads, sweets, and spirits. Plus the restaurant makes its own ice creams, jams, confections, and even pottery pieces for serving.

Lodging: Southall Farm   &   Inn in Leiper’s Fork collects rainfall to water its grounds and serves produce and meat grown onsite in its restaurants.

What to read and watch

Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business , by Dolly Parton. The country music icon’s autobiography details her rags-to-riches story growing up in the foothills of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains.

There are many music themed shows and biopics that focus on Tennessee artists both real and fictional, including the story of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line , the TV series Nashville , and the 2022 blockbuster Elvis .

Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and the Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest , by Fawn Weaver. This 2024 summer release explores the forgotten history of the enslaved man who taught Jack Daniel to make whiskey.

16 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Tennessee

Written by Catherine Hawkins and Colin J. McMechan Updated May 11, 2023

If you're one of many travelers who believe the most visited national parks in the United States are the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, or Yosemite, you've probably never visited Tennessee. You may be surprised to learn that the number one most visited US national park is, in fact, the Great Smoky Mountains or "Smokies."

Mountain view in Tennessee

This area of outstanding natural beauty in the "Volunteer State" sees nearly three times as many visitors each year as its nearest rival, the Grand Canyon. Much of Tennessee's popularity is due to its accessibility, being surrounded by eight other states. It also has much to do with its astonishing natural beauty, rich history, and first-rate attractions.

There's also the music. From the rock 'n' roll legacy of Elvis Presley to country stars such as Johnny Cash, Tennessee was the starting place for many of America's greatest artists and musical genres. Discover the top scenic and music-related sites, as well as civil war sites and national landmarks with our list of top tourist attractions in Tennessee.

1. The Smokies: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

2. graceland, memphis, 3. dollywood, pigeon forge, 4. nashville: music city usa, 5. home of the blues: memphis, 6. the titanic museum, pigeon forge, 7. national civil rights museum, memphis, 8. tennessee aquarium, chattanooga, 9. andrew jackson's hermitage, 10. lookout mountain, chattanooga, 11. tennessee's civil war heritage, 12. downtown knoxville, 13. chattanooga and the tennessee valley railroad, 14. the parthenon, nashville, 15. american museum of science and energy, oak ridge, 16. the museum of appalachia.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a standout attraction in Tennessee that blends adventure with world-class scenery. From downtown Gatlinburg, you can easily drive to the park's most popular places to visit and things to do . Another option is to jump on the chairlift and head for the hills at Ober Gatlinburg , a ski resort and amusement park offering year-round activities.

Take the scenic drive to the Top of Old Smoky—6,643-foot-high Clingmans Dome— and walk the short, steep ascent to its Observation Tower with 360-degree views. If you are coming for hiking and sightseeing, the best time to visit the Smoky Mountains is spring until fall with winter a close runner-up.

Apart from scenic drives, park highlights include more than 850 miles of hiking trails and auto routes. For intermediate hikers, the trail to the top of Mount LeConte is a peak experience. For a more leisurely tour, drive around Cades Cove Loop to see picturesque meadows, pioneer homesteads, mountain views, and wildlife. The road trip takes between two and four hours, depending on how many other cars are out there.

Enjoy overnight camping in the park , or book a rustic cabin in the woods for your mountain getaway.

Visiting Great Smoky Mountain National Park is one of the top things to do in Tennessee . Be sure not to miss it.

Address: 107 Park Headquarters Road, Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Graceland, residence of Elvis Presley

As popular as the White House in Washington D.C., Graceland is one of the top attractions in the historic city of Memphis . The most famous rock 'n' roll residence in the world, Graceland Mansion is a place of pilgrimage for fans from far and wide. Tours of this fine stately home provide a glimpse into the life of The King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley . Much of the property is the same, or restored to, as it was when he passed away at Graceland in 1977.

Elvis Presley's Memphis is a vast warehouse-like structure that includes exhibits and displays. You'll marvel at flashy costumes and learn about the influences on his meteoric rise to fame. Check out the family tomb where fans have been moved to tears. See an impressive collection of Elvis cars, aircraft, and memorabilia. Tour his living quarters, including the music room, TV room, and Jungle Den.

A variety of tour packages are offered, including accommodation at the luxurious The Guest House at Graceland. For those interested in a virtual visit, numerous fun interactive exhibits and online tours can be experienced on the Graceland website.

Address: 3717 Elvis Presley Blvd, Memphis, Tennessee

Dollywood

Named after country singer Dolly Parton (who owns the park), Dollywood has long been Tennessee's most popular ticketed attraction, luring more than three million visitors per year. One of the top attractions in Pigeon Forge , this thriving 160-acre theme park provides family fun with its mix of folksy Smoky Mountains traditions and crafts, thrilling rides, and musical entertainment.

Dollywood has more than 50 rides—nine of them roller coasters, including the popular Tennessee Tornado—spread across 11 themed areas. These areas represent the culture and history of east Tennessee and include Timber Canyon, Country Fair, and Jukebox Junction.

Other highlights include live concerts, festivals, and an authentic coal-fired steam train—the Dollywood Express —that circles the park. Make a day of it and include Splash Country water park.

Keep in mind that Dollywood closes from January through mid-March to prepare for the upcoming season, so plan your visit accordingly.

Address: 2700 Dollywood Parks Blvd, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Grand Ole Opry House

No American state can claim the rich musical tapestry that is evident everywhere in Tennessee. Nashville is home to important music-related attractions, including the Grand Ole Opry House and the Ryman Auditorium . The Ryman, built in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, is also known as the Mother Church of Country Music. It was the original Opry and setting for live radio broadcasts that put the Opry on the musical map.

Shiloh National Military Park

Tennessee, the last state to join the Confederacy, was divided in its Civil War loyalties. The west and middle part of the state were allied with Confederate forces, while the east sided with Union soldiers.

As one of the most northerly of the Confederate states, Tennessee witnessed numerous battles during the four-year conflict, many of which are commemorated by visitor centers, museums, cemeteries, and memorials.

Fort Donelson National Battlefield is the site of one of the first major Union victories and home to a cemetery, fort, and visitor center. Shiloh National Military Park comprises 6,000 acres on the site of the two-day battle that took place in 1862. The first significant Civil War battle in the Western Theater happened at Shiloh, which includes a cemetery with more than 3,500 Union graves.

Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park , the country's largest military park, is historically significant in the Civil War. The 9,500-acre park was where the battle took place that signaled the end of the Confederacy.

Tennessee State Slogan

"tennessee - america at its best", adopted in 1965.

" Tennessee - America at its Best " was adopted in 1965 as the Tennessee State Slogan. (Chapter 33, Section 1, Public Acts, 1965). On January 21, 1965, Senator Mack Ray, Kingsport, introduced legislation proposing that Merritt Potter's contest-winning slogan take another prize and be adopted as the official slogan of the State of Tennessee.

Tennessee State Slogan: "Tennessee - America at its Best"

"It's always interesting that people associate a slogan with branding. It's one of many elements that go into the overall brand," says Mark Thien, communications director for the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. "We've done a tremendous job of marketing the state without a slogan. It can be done."

Nevertheless, Tennessee is going through extensive consumer research on its way to a new slogan. The old slogan, "Tennessee: Sounds Good to Me," was killed by Gov. Phil Bredesen upon taking office.

Tennesseans believe in their slogan, "Tennessee-America at its best!"

In 1965, the Tennessee General Assembly adopted as the state's official slogan, " Tennessee- America at Its Best. " (Chapter 33, Section 1, Public Acts, 1965)

Tennessee Law

The law designating the official Tennessee state slogan is found in the Tennessee Code Annotated, title 4, chapter 1, part 3, section 4 -1-304

Title 4 State Government Chapter 1 General Provisions Part 3 State Symbols Tenn. Code Ann. § 4-1-304 (2011) 4-1-304. State slogan. The following is hereby adopted as an official slogan for this state: "Tennessee - America at Its Best." State mottos across America: Full list of the slogans for all 50 states, plus DC

tennessee tourism slogan

Every state is different, and each distinguishes itself by its natural landmarks, attractions and symbols. Along with a state nickname, the 50 states are known by individual mottos that represent their founding or key features.

The United States has a national motto of its own. "In God We Trust" is the U.S. motto, reaffirmed by the House in 2011. But several other mottos have found their place in the national lexicon, one such is "E pluribus unum" or "Out of many, one." President Barack Obama referred to the Latin phrase as the national motto in a speech in 2010.

Here's what you should know about the state motto for each state:

Alabama's state motto is "Audemus jura nostra defendere,"  a Latin phrase that translates to "We dare maintain our rights."

Alaska's state motto is  "North to the Future," chosen in 1967 during the Alaska Purchase Centennial to represent "Alaska as a land of promise."

"Ditat Deus" is Arizona's state motto, which means "God enriches."

Arkansas' state motto is "Regnat Populus," which translates from Latin to "The people rule."

"Eureka" has been California's state motto since 1963, but the word has appeared on the state seal since 1849 as a reference to the discovery of gold in California.

Colorado's motto is "Nil Sine Numine," which translates from Latin to "Nothing without providence or deity."

Connecticut

Connecticut's state motto is "Qui Transtulit Sustinet," which means "He who transplanted still sustains." According to Connecticut's state government site, possible origins trace to the psalm "Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it."

Delaware's state motto has been "Liberty and Independence" since 1847. The state also adopted a tourist slogan in 2015, "Delaware: Endless Discoveries."

District of Columbia

Though technically not a state, Washington, D.C. still has a motto:  "Justitia Omnibus," which means "Justice for All."

Florida's motto is the same as the nation's motto: "In God We Trust."

Georgia's state motto appears as three pillars on its state seal: "Wisdom, Justice and Moderation."

Hawaii's state motto comes from King Kamehameha III in 1843 and was uttered as the Hawaiian flag rose again after a brief period of British occupation: "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono," or "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness."

Idaho's state motto is "Esto Perpetua," which translates to "Let it be perpetual," "It is forever" or "Be eternal."

Illinois' state motto is "State Sovereignty, National Union."

Since 1937, Indiana's state motto has been "The Crossroads of America."

Iowa's state motto is "Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain."

Kansas' state motto  "Ad astra per aspera" means "To the stars through difficulties" and is aptly illustrated on the state seal, which depicts a farm below a sky of stars.

Kentucky's state motto is "United we stand, divided we fall." It comes from "Liberty Song" by John Dickinson, a song from 1768 that Kentucky's first governor was fond of. Kentucky also has an official Latin motto, "Deo gratiam habeamus," or "Let us be grateful to God."

Louisiana's state motto is "Union, Justice, Confidence."

Maine's state motto is "Dirigo," which means "I direct" or "I guide."

Maryland's state motto is an Italian proverb: "Fatti maschii, parole femine" which generally translates to "strong deeds, gentle words," the state of Maryland says. The saying dates to Calvert family, the Roman Catholic founders of the Maryland colony. But according to literary translator Antony Shugaar, the phrase more closely translates to "manly deeds, womanly words."

Massachusetts

Massachusetts' state motto since 1775 is "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem," which is Latin for "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."

Michigan also has a Latin state motto, "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice," translating to "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you."

"L’etoile du Nord" is Minnesota's state nickname, which is a French phrase meaning "Star of the North."

Mississippi

Mississippi's state motto is "Virtute et Armis," which means "By valor and arms."

"Salus populi suprema lex esto" is Missouri's state motto. The exact translation has been debated but was originally intended to mean "Let the good of the people be the supreme law," as proposed by William Wells in 1847 when he designed the state seal. Today, the Secretary of State's office says it means “The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law.”

Montana's state motto is "Oro y Plata," which is Spanish for "Gold and Silver." This motto is in tandem with Montana's state nickname, "The Treasure State," both named for the state's mineral wealth.

Nebraska's official state motto is  “Equality Before the Law.”

Nevada's state motto is "All for Our Country."

New Hampshire

Perhaps one of the most prominent state mottos across residents' license plates, hats, shirts, flags and other state memorabilia is New Hampshire's "Live Free or Die," which comes from a statement written by Revolutionary General John Stark.

New Jersey's state motto is   "Liberty and Prosperity."  The state also voted on the slogan "New Jersey: Come See For Yourself" in 2006 to attract tourists.

New Mexico's state motto is "Crescit Eundo," which translates from Latin to “It grows as it goes."

If you've ever seen the movie "Silver Linings Playbook," you may know this one. New York's state motto is "Excelsior," which translates to "Ever Upward."

North Carolina

North Carolina's state motto is “Esse quam videri,” meaning “To be, rather than to seem.”

North Dakota

“Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable" is North Dakota's state motto. According to ND.gov, this was also the motto of the Dakota Territory, the unorganized states of North and South Dakota prior to 1889.

Ohio's state motto is "With God, All Things Are Possible," decided after a 12-year-old boy won a contest to select the motto in the 1950s. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the state of Ohio in 1997, saying this motto was a violation of the separation of church and state. But the motto remained when the district court judge ruled that it didn't make reference to any one religion and was a generic reference to God.

Oklahomans know "Labor Omnia Vincit" or "Work conquers all" as the phrase on the state seal, but it technically isn't defined as the state's official motto. In fact, only 38% of Oklahoma residents could identify the motto, a 2021 survey found. A 2012 Oklahoma House resolution even tried to establish "In God We Trust," the national motto, as Oklahoma's as well. And in 2021, Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall proposed an $85,000 bill to prominently display the phrase on state buildings.

"She Flies With Her Own Wings" has been Oregon's state motto since 1987. Before that, it was "The Union."

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's state motto is "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence."

Rhode Island

Rhode Island's state motto is a single word: "Hope."   The state also created the slogan "Rhode Island: Cooler and Warmer" in 2016 to garner tourists but quickly attracted backlash on social media.

South Carolina

South Carolina has two state mottos that appear on the state seal in two ovals. The first is "Animis Opibusque Parati" meaning "Prepared in mind and resources" and the second is "Dum Spiro Spero," which means "While I breathe I hope."

South Dakota

South Dakota's state motto is "Under God the People Rule." The state also has a motto that accompanies its state flower, the American Pasque. According to the state's official site, "I lead" is the floral emblem motto.

Tennessee's state motto has been "Agriculture and Commerce" since 1801 because of the state's large agriculture sector.

Texas' state motto is also a one-word wonder: "Friendship." According to the Texas State Historical Association, the word was chosen in 1930 because the state name came roughly from a Caddo Indian word translating to "friends."

Utah's state motto is "Industry." According to Utah History Encyclopedia, the motto became official in 1959 and was chosen because of its connection with the beehive symbol, also in Utah's state nickname .

Vermont's state motto is "Freedom and Unity" as displayed on the state seal.

"Sic Semper Tyrannis" is Virginia's state motto. The Latin phrase means "Thus always to tyrants."

Washington has a territorial motto, but it's never been formally adopted by the legislature, its state government site says. "Al-ki" or "Alki" is a Chinook word that means "Bye and Bye" or "By and By."

West Virginia

West Virginia's state motto is "Montani Semper Liberi," which is Latin for "Mountaineers are always free." A 2007 vote also established "Wild, Wonderful" as West Virginia's state slogan.

"Forward" is Wisconsin's state motto, chosen in 1851 when the state seal and coat of arms were revised.

Wyoming's state motto is "Equal Rights." The state is also nicknamed "Equality State," as it was the first territory in the U.S. to give women the right to vote .

‘Made in Tennessee’ tourism campaign to be crafted by out-of-state ad firm

tennessee tourism slogan

Tennessee is hot right now. ABC’s hit show “Nashville” has visitors flocking to the country music capital, and the state is eager to capture every tourism dollar it possibly can. Two new 30-second advertisements, promoting the “Made in Tennessee” slogan, are running on television.

But while the waterfalls, horse trails and rolling hills sure are made in Tennessee, the advertisements themselves are not.

That’s because the state tourism board signed a deal worth up to $60 million more than five years with VML, a marketing agency based in Kansas City, Mo., to produce the ad campaign.

Gov. Bill Haslem’s (R) budget includes almost $11 million for tourism advertising, $6 million of which is earmarked for the VML contract. And state tourism director Susan Whitaker says it’s a good investment: Every dollar they spend yields about $19 in tourism revenue, Whitaker told Nashville Public Radio .

Here’s an added bonus: While VML might be headquartered in Kansas City, the new contract convinced them to open an office in Nashville. So, jobs! David Smith, a spokesman for Haslem’s office, said just about every other component of the advertisements are homegrown. The man doing the voice-over is Rivers Rutherford, a native son; all the music was created by Tennessee musicians. The spots were even edited in VML’s Nashville offices.

The footage definitely came from inside the Volunteer State’s borders. The firm filmed both commercials on GoPro cameras during a six or seven-day roadtrip around the state, creative director John Godsey told The New York Times .

Here’s one of their new ads:

Haslam’s office hopes the advertising helps Tennessee generate enough tourism revenue to land in the top 10. The $11 million the state will spend on tourism advertising, though, is far below what other states spend: In fiscal  2013, 20 states spent more than $12 million on their tourism offices.

A survey by the U.S. Travel Association found Hawaii spent the most, $75 million, advertising its islands. Florida, Illinois and California all spent more than $50 million bragging about themselves. States spent an average of $14.9 million on tourism, the association found.

30 Nashville phrases you should know

We believe in Nashville, do you?

When calling Nashville home (even for the weekend), it's good to learn to speak the language.

Being a Southern town, Music City is ripe with colloquialisms and sayings unfamiliar to Yankee and Californian ears.

Don’t worry, here at 12th and Broad, we’ve got you Nashville newbies covered.

We will have you speaking like a native in no time with this list of both uniquely Southern and Nashville phrases you will likely hear around town:

Y’all: You all. Everyone. All you people.

Fixin': Used in lieu of, “I’m going to” or “getting ready to”

Bless your heart: You can pretty much follow up any gossipy comment with, “bless their/her/his heart” and that makes it okay.

Meat and three: A typical Southern dinner. Meat and three sides, heavy on the mashed potatoes and gravy.

God’s Country: The South.

Athens of the South: A nickname of Nashville, for being a city filled with colleges (32 to be exact).  Also, the main reason for the life-sized replica of The Parthenon in Centennial Park.

Vols: University of Tennessee athletics. Knoxville. Big Orange. Football. Tennessee Volunteers.

Commodore : Vanderbilt University athletics, in-state rival of the Volunteers.

Preds: Short for, the Nashville “Predators,” our professional hockey team.

Smashville: Where the “Preds” smash their competition - get it?

Titans: Not a race of mythological Greek people, no, no — our professional football team.

Hot Chicken: Other than music, it might just be hot chicken that put Nashville on the map.

Created by the family of Andre Prince Jeffries, owner of Prince’s Hot Chicken ( 123 Ewing Drive ), this spicy dish is our local specialty. Traditionally served on white bread and complete with pickles, get ready to sweat and enjoy a taste of Nashville with every bite.

Winder: Refers to a window.

Pitch a fit: A true Southerner knows you don't have a hissy fit, you pitch one.

Hold your horses: Be patient. Hold on a sec. Slow your roll.

Supper: Dinner

Stompin’ grounds: Where you’re from. Your turf. Your favorite hang.

NashVegas: A term often associated to Nashville as a whole, but locals know this actually refers to Lower Broadway in all of her neon lit, “why am I still up at 2 a.m.” glory.

SAT Co: A long-time Nashville staple, San Antonio Taco Co. ( 416 21st Ave S .) has been satisfying student bellies with affordable Tex-Mex and buckets of Corona since 1984.

Paris: In Nashville, when someone tells you they are from Paris, they don’t mean France. They are referring to a little town 86 miles northwest, known for hosting the “World’s Biggest Fish Fry” every April and for it’s 60-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Tax-free weekend: A weekend in August in which certain items are tax-exempt throughout the state.

Tea: Served sweet always. You must request un-sweet or else this is what you’ll get.

Barbecue: Memphis-style, slow-cooked in a pit, served “dry” or “wet.”

I Believe In Nashville: In May of 2010, Nashville was nearly underwater. While we lost homes and precious landmarks, we didn’t lose heart. In fact, Nashville banded together to help those who were affected without hesitation. It was the most beautiful display of unity and loving service a city could ever ask for.

A phrase commemorated with a now world-famous mural located on the side of 12th South Dental Studio ; 2700 12th Avenue South.

The Nashville Way: Not just a slogan on this adorable shirt by Project 615 , but a phrase coined to praise what is viewed as our city’s amicable race relations during the Civil Rights movement. Read the book, The Nashville Way by Benjamin Houston.

Southern charm: An attitude of hospitality, warmth, sweetness and generosity attributed to Southerners. This attitude will get you a long way in this town and you don’t have to be from here to have it.

Honky Tonkin’: What visitors in cowboy hats are doing on the weekend. Occurs on Lower Broadway only.

It ain’t the heat, it's the humidity: A phrase that can’t be explained, it’s something you feel. One you will better understand sometime in June.

LOTG: When your friend texts you in August asking if you’d like to go to LOTG, they are inviting you to Live on the Green — Nashville’s free outdoor music festival brought to you by our beloved local independent radio station, Lightning 100 . You should say yes.

Swarmageddon: Now and again, you may hear a Nashville local mention the Swarmageddon of 2011. This refers to the 17-year cicada invasion that lasted a whole Summer. It was seriously gross. Get ready, the next 13-year cycle brood will be returning 2021.

We hope ya’ll love this town as much as we do!

Memphis Tourism aims to boost visitor count with soulful new calling card

tennessee tourism slogan

Tourism boosters believe 23 years is long enough for a marketing slogan, but they didn’t want to totally abandon a winning formula focused on Memphis' iconic music.

They unveiled a new slogan Thursday that adds a dash of soul to a 1995 tagline that has more than stood the test of time.

The new slogan, “Memphis: Home of Blues, Soul & Rock ‘N’ Roll," replaces “Memphis: Home of the Blues, Birthplace of Rock ‘N’ Roll.”

The agency that promotes Memphis’ $3.3 billion-a-year tourism industry also got a new name, for the first time in 95 years.

Memphis Tourism is the new name for the agency formerly known as the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau, founded in 1923.

The new brands of Memphis tourism were unveiled at the New Daisy Theatre in a star-studded annual meeting of hoteliers, attraction operators, restaurateurs and others who form the backbone of the local industry.

Rapper Al Kapone co-hosted a talk show-formatted meeting with Memphis Tourism president Kevin Kane.

New University of Memphis Tigers basketball coach Penny Hardaway brought the crowd to its feet. He was presented a "Spirit of Memphis" award, whose previous recipients have included such notables as Sam Phillips, Larry Finch, B.B. King and Elvis Presley.

Grammy-winning artist and Royal Studio owner Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell kept the Memphis vibe rocking, and John Paul Keith brought the rockabilly.

The new tourism campaign tagline is the latest in a succession of catchphrases that have represented Memphis to the world since 1980, when the Memphis Jobs Conference led to a concerted push to grow tourism.

Previous slogans included “Start Something Great in Memphis,” dating to the tenure of Kane’s predecessor, Marshall Murdaugh, who famously coined “Virginia is for Lovers,” and branded New York as the Big Apple.

“Start Something Great” gave way to “Give Me Memphis,” based on a lyrical line purchased from Chuck Berry (“Memphis, Tennessee”), for $10,000.

Neither lasted nearly as long as the just-replaced civic motto.

It literally stared visitors in the face when they entered Memphis on the Hernando DeSoto (Interstate 40) Bridge. It was displayed at the top of industrial silos on the riverfront. The silos and sign came down during conversion of the Pyramid Arena to Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid.

Kane said “soulful” was the word most often used to describe Memphis, by likely visitors surveyed by tourism officials last year.

Graphically, where the former logo had a vertical guitar forming the “I” in Memphis, the replacement has a guitar body sweeping horizontally across the body of text.

The tourism agency said the change embraces soul music that rose to national prominence from Stax and Royal recording studios.

Kane said officials hope the marketing and advertising efforts using the new images will help build on the city’s 11.7 million visitors last year, a nearly half million increase from 2016.

Noting that Memphis music is the No. 1 attraction that draws out-of-town visitors, Kane declared, “We’re getting on the soul train.”

Added Kapone, “You know I’ve been about rocking with the soul train all my life.”
