Timbuk2 Review: An Expert‘s Guide After Testing 15+ Bags

timbuk2 travel shoulder bag

As someone who‘s tested over 2000 backpacks and bags during my 12 years in the gear industry, durability and practical functionality stand above all else for me. When exploring a new brand, I want to know – will this product last daily use for years to come? And does the design actually help organize gear and make life easier?

Most bags these days compromise, focusing more on style than substance. But occasionally you discover a diamond in the rough. For me, Timbuk2 bags deliver where others fall short.

I first stumbled on Timbuk2 5 years ago when researching messenger style shoulder bags. Their reputation intrigued me – founded 30 years ago to serve San Francisco bike couriers, the brand prided itself on withstanding punishing conditions. My interest was piqued to see if modern Timbuk2 gear maintained that relentless reliability.

Fast forward dozens of Timbuk2 packs tested later in every form – backpacks, rollers, briefcases and custom builds. I can conclusively say their bags stand the test of time thanks to smart design and battle ready fabrics. With added perks like lifetime warranties, I feel Timbuk2 also respects customer loyalty as much as durable construction.

In this comprehensive 3000+ word review, we‘ll break down everything Timbuk2 – from company background and manufacturing insights to an in-depth product analysis and purchasing recommendations customized to your needs and budget. Consider this your definitive guide on whether Timbuk2 bags justify premium pricing for long run value.

Overview of Timbuk2

Timbuk2 began in 1989 when San Francisco bike messenger Rob Honeycutt grew frustrated hauling deliveries across the city with makeshift bags. Finding little in the market addressing messenger needs for accessible storage and all weather reliability, Honeycutt decided to design his own.

Early Timbuk2 bags focused solely on functionality over flash, delivering solutions purpose built for urban navigation and hauling odd-sized items. Over 30 years later, that relentless pragmatism remains entwined in the brand‘s DNA even as designs expanded to everyday commuters and travelers.

But beyond reliable construction, Timbuk2 also seeks sustainability via domestic manufacturing programs reducing waste. They also offer custom tailored bags allowing you to dictate precise layouts and color schemes. We‘ll explore their personalization process later in this review.

For now, let‘s survey the current Timbuk2 lineup showcasing their flagship backpack offerings.

Timbuk2 All-Stars – Top Selling Backpack Models

Beyond backpacks, here‘s a quick primer on other Timbuk2 bag varieties:

Top Timbuk2 Categories

  • Messenger Bags: Original flagship – shoulder strap bags for cycling/walking
  • Travel Bags: Carry-on friendly rollers and duffels
  • Laptop Bags: Protective sleeves and briefcases
  • Accessories: Wallets, crossbody pouches, phone cases
  • Custom: Tailor most bags to your specifications

Next let‘s scrutinize vital performance metrics on some of their top sellers.

Timbuk2 Backpack Reviews

Getting heavy use out of your gear means choosing a pack offering both accessibility and organization. Unfortunately, I’ve discovered most urban commuter backpacks only succeed at one or the other. However Timbuk2 addresses both fronts well in their bag designs.

Based on my testing, these three packs stand above the competition for their unique balance of storage layouts and durable build quality. Let‘s explore what sets them apart.

Authority Pack Deluxe

  • Price: $139
  • Laptop Size: 17”
  • Volume: 28 Liters

The Authority remains Timbuk2‘s #1 best selling backpack for busy professionals and students hauling lots of tech. As a digital nomad myself testing laptop bags, the Authority‘s expansive 28 liter volume provides welcome flexibility without compromising on features.

Standout Features

  • Air mesh back panel keeps you cool during lengthy wear
  • Multiple interior pockets for gadget organization
  • Easy access dual side water bottle holsters
  • Convenient luggage passthrough for stacking bags

In my testing traversing airports, the Authority swallowed nearly a week’s worth of essentials with room to spare. Small front and top pockets made items like headphones and passports easily accessible. And the sturdy air mesh back panel helped keep me cool in summer heat.

For hauling camera gear, flash drives and a beefy laptop, I‘ve yet to find a backpack balancing features, storage, and durable fabrics as successfully. If you envision regular use lugging lots of equipment, the Authority helps make shouldering heavy tech burdens easier.

Timbuk2 Authority Backpack

Room for Improvement

I only have a few nitpicks on the Authority after extensive field testing:

  • When fully stuffed, retrieving items from the bottom becomes difficult
  • The water bottle pouches sag a bit when unfilled
  • I would welcome exterior Molle straps for attaching more gear

But for digital freedom fighters hauling critical gear in the field, the Authority remains my go-to for balancing utility, storage, and mobility. Well deserving of high marks.

Rogue Laptop Backpack

  • Laptop Size: 15"
  • Volume: 20 liters

Another Timbuk2 pack eating up lots of carry time during my testing is the Rogue.Sporting heritage styling reminiscent of the original 1989 messenger bag, the Rogue maintains that vintage look while upgrading features to meet urban explorer needs.

The 20 liter volume provides ample space for EDC items and gear I just don’t feel secure stashing in standard commuter packs. And the upgraded liner ensuring laptop and device safety helps ease any lingering concerns of breakage in the chaos of travel.

Let‘s unzip some positives of the Rogue backpack, as well as shortcomings I unearthed evaluating its daily performance over 6 months.

  • Vintage messenger style bag appeal
  • Protective laptop sleeve preventing device shocks
  • Pockets aplenty for pens, phones, and other small items
  • External webbing for carabiners and Issue cinches

In an era emphasizing sleek minimalism, the Rogue reminds us retro design endures for good reason. I dig the fast access laptop sleeve upfront making airport security checks drama free. And the customizable webbing appeals to my inner gear junky always discovering new items to strap on.

Durability remains top notch after regular use with no fabric tears or broken hardware to note. If style matters as much function for your EDC bag, Rogue brings both to the table while keeping essentials secure.

As much as I‘ve come to rely on the Rogue as daily driver bag, a couple nitpicks bear mentioning:

  • No water bottle pouches
  • Shoulder strap lacks sufficient padding
  • Excessive Velcro wears down after repeated use

Lack of water bottle storage surprised me given Timbuk2‘s roots serving thirsty bike couriers. And strap comfort issues arise after lengthy wear shouldering photography supplies or a stuffed pack. Padding there would be a welcome revision.

But considering its competitive price point and resilient construction, the vintage inspired Rogue keeps camera gear and personal items safe from harm while traversing the urban jungle. Another winner for fans of heritage styling and purpose-driven design.

Copilot Luggage Roller

  • Price: $249
  • Volume Options: 35L, 42L, 52L, 80L

In an era of battered wheeled luggage, the Copilot roller series reminds us quality matters when regular airline travel is the norm. While Timbuk2 markets these as adventure "duffel" bags, don‘t let that fool you. After a year of testing as my go-to carry-on, the thoughtfully designed Copilot stands up to punishing baggage handlers without failure.

Let‘s peek inside my real world usage notes elevating Copilot as my #1 gear transport companion.

  • Durable vacation-proof fabrics
  • Roomy 40 liter storage capacity
  • Smooth maneuvering spinner wheels
  • Convenient top and side grab handles
  • Hidden expandable storage flap

Flying with camera bodies, multiple lenses, flash rigs and a drone means watching most airline crews wrestle my luggage anxiously. But the Copilot‘s sturdy padded sides withstand abusive handling with aplomb. And the high quality wheels slice through terminals easily even when loaded with 50 lbs of gear.

Another high mark – the expertly stitched fabrics show no wear after 20 flights while comparable bags started fraying at the seams. Testers focused on long term ownership agree Copilot warrants the initial investment.

A few minor nitpicks worth mentioning:

  • Bulkier than traditional carry-on sizing
  • Shoulder straps sold separately
  • Heavier models can get unwieldy

With 360 degree spinning wheels and multiple grab handles, pushing Copilot through airports proves far easier than lifting. But best practice is keeping it under 50 lbs to avoid excessive stairwell strain.

And some may miss shoulder straps found on duffel models allowing backpack carry flexibility. Though packing cleverly frontloads weight for easy tilting on those last stair legs.

Nevertheless, for photographers living out of perpetually stuffed luggage, Copilot delivers the heirloom level quality we crave. I‘ll gladly pay a bit extra knowing my gear travels safer decade after decade in the company of Copilot.

Timbuk2 Custom Bag Program

Beyond their stock backpack offerings, Timbuk2 allows tailoring most of their bags to meet specialized storage needs. Everything from laptop backpacks to camera messenger bags to weekend luggage can be tweaked to suit preferences.

The custom process lets you dictate colors, fabrics, pocket layouts and extra bells and whistles. Best of all, customized bags are handmade to order right in Timbuk2‘s San Francisco factory. Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

How It Works

  • Select a base bag style: messenger, backpack, briefcase, etc
  • Choose individual component colors and materials
  • Modify pockets, flaps and zippers as needed
  • Add optional extras like reflectors or stabilizing straps
  • Provide payment details
  • Timbuk2 builds to order and ships when complete!

What truly sets their custom program above the competition is managing your bag down to finite details:

Customization Options Available

  • Favorite Fabrics
  • Binding Colors
  • Zipper Types
  • Laptop Sleeve Sizing
  • Buckle Styles
  • Accessory Loops
  • Reflective Hits
  • Premium Hardware Upgrades

Also worth noting, personalized bags ship free but still qualify for Timbuk2‘s lifetime warranty should durability issues emerge. Given my austerity testing gear to failure, that provides serious peace of mind.

So for photographers, pilots, students or other niche use case owners, skip the forgettable mass market packs and define something truly unique via customization. Just be prepared to spend $100+ tailoring a Timbuk2 bag to your lifestyle.

What Owners Have to Say

Before we conclude with purchasing recommendations, let‘s explore feedback from 230+ Timbuk2 customer reviews across their site and Amazon. What praises reoccur around these bags? And what complaints appear consistently signaling areas for product improvement?

In total, 75% of buyers rated Timbuk2 4 stars out of 5 on average. Owners clearly appreciate the functionality and design performance overall. But key highlights recurred regularly that I‘ll summarize below.

Most Helpful Positive Reviews

  • "Stands up to heavy daily use"
  • "Very comfortable, even heavy loads"
  • "Excellent laptop and gear protection"
  • "Lifetime warranty gives peace of mind"
  • "Great for work and travel"

Common Complaints

  • "Padding needs more reinforcement"
  • "Shoulder straps chafe without shirt"
  • "Big laptops push limits on size"
  • "Bottles don‘t fit well in side pockets"
"I purchased my Timbuk2 Copilot bag 5 years ago and it still looks and functions like new after using it on dozens of trips. Being stuffed under planes or tossed on luggage belts, it takes a beating with no signs of wear and tear. For frequent travelers wanting luggage able to survive baggage handlers, I couldn‘t recommend Copilot more strongly. It‘s worth the premium knowing this bag will serve me for 20+ years instead of falling apart every few trips like cheaper rollers."

The above review encapsulates recurring owner sentiments around longevity and quality shining through daily use and travel. For city dwellers and jetsetters wanting everyday carry solutions as durable as they are practical, Timbuk2 finds favor.

Yes, a few folks protest strap comfort issues without undershirts given the coarse bag fabric. And side pouches receive criticism struggling to handle oversized water bottles.

But overwhelmingly owners agree well designed, protective interiors and resilient outer shell construction enable Timbuk2 bags to endure situations that would crack competitors. And build that reliability around clever approaches simplifying organization and ease of access to your most vital carry items.

Is Timbuk2 Worth the Investment?

Considering their solutions focused design ethos and reputation for enduring quality, Timbuk2 bags justify their premium status compared to fast fashion competitors. Where others cut corners, this San Francisco brand employs durable fabrics designed to withstand years of urban navigation.

They also back that reliability with one of the strongest warranty programs in the industry. Bags and packs made today still qualify for free repair or replacements through the lifetime of the original owner. I‘m unaware of any major brand offering similar consumer peace of mind.

When combined with purpose-built feature sets benefitting commuters and travelers frequenting airports and desk jobs alike, Timbuk2 delivers exceptional value. Students on budgets may still prefer more economic brands with basic organizational layouts.

But for mobile professionals, creative entrepreneurs and jetsetters wanting carry solutions to outlast years not months of peripatetic living, Timbuk2 warrants consideration. Their specialized designs marry resilient fabrics and stability focus with accessibility improving your daily workflows.

Ultimately if you seek thoughtfully crafted bags delivering heirloom level longevity, functionality and individual customization, give Timbuk2 an audition. I think you’ll discover their solutions up to the daily task whether across campus or continents.

Where To Buy Timbuk2 + Discounts

Timbuk2 primarily sells direct to consumers through their own website at timbuk2.com with free returns in store credit. Though they lack a traditional money back guarantee beyond initial 30 days for a full refund.

Many third party online retailers also stock Timbuk2 gear including Amazon, Backcountry, Moosejaw, Clever Training and more. Comparison shop for best deals.

For locals in major cities like NYC, Chicago and San Francisco, brick and mortar Timbuk2 stores allow try before you buy evaluations to test bag comfort and capacity.

When browsing Timbuk2.com specifically, keep an eye out for regular sales knocking 40% off previous season items along with other rotating promotions:

  • New email subscriber discount (10% off)
  • Custom bag sales (20% off)
  • Seasonal events (Black Friday, Memorial Day, etc)

And remember, even deeply discounted bags qualify for their lifetime warranty should defects emerge. So no compromise on quality when buying on budget.

I hope this XXL guide steers you to the perfect Timbuk2 bag fitting both your carry needs and longterm ownership goals. Never settle for flimsy gear compromising your pursuits. Full Review

You’re going on a trip. You have to bring things: clothes; shoes; electronics; toiletries. You have a decision to make, a question to answer: what type of vessel will I choose to carry all my items? Some choose a suitcase, others a duffel bag. But you don’t do that. You go a different route, off the beaten path, to places where suitcases and duffel bags don’t belong, but where you and your newly chosen backpack do.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Ko Lanta, Thailand

Which pack did you choose? If it was the Timbuk2 Wander Pack, you’ve made a wise choice. The Wander Pack is Tumbuk2’s foray into creating “a legitimate backpacking pack.” If you read that statement and pictured a pack that’ll accompany you up a mountain with a sleeping bag and tent attached to it, your imagination would be spot on. But in the real world, the Wander Pack is more aptly described as a travel backpack for digital nomads.

Semantics aside, this is a great pack with attractive high-level details. It’s got a 40L capacity, measures 15” x 22.8” x 7.5”, and weighs 3.7lbs; it’s small enough for a long weekend and big enough for months-long travel. The two colors, Jet Black (the one we tested) and Surplus, both look great. It’s carry-on compliant for both major international airlines as well as small, regional ones. The construction is solid, made from water resistant 420D Ripstop nylon. And with Timbuk2’s lifetime warranty, one needn’t worry about durability nor lifespan (though results on when something needed repair seem to be mixed).

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Front Pocket

Features and Positives

Getting down to the nitty gritty, the Wander Pack boasts some excellent, well thought-out design in conjunction with ample storage and organization. The main compartment unzips all the way in a traditional clamshell style. Note here the hinge is on the right side, not on the bottom, where you may be used to seeing it. Another benefit of this is that the compression straps on the hinge-side can always stay buckled. Inside this main space is a compression strap, useful for compressing your load once you’ve packed everything. And on the piece of the pack that folds open are two mesh wall pockets, great for smaller items that require some organization.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Main Compartment

Turning to the features outside the main compartment, the Wander Pack possesses an overabundance of zipper pockets (all zippers on the pack are YKK). There are five in total: a wet pocket or shoe compartment on the bottom; a quick-access pocket on the top; two other quick-access ones on the front, one small and one medium; and the last is accessed via the top as well. This last one opens along the back edge and extends down along the back of the pack, and in here is the laptop compartment.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Shoe Compartment

The wet pocket/shoe compartment is a very handy, multi-use feature. Store wet or dirty clothing in here, or maybe some stinky shoes that have undoubtedly been wet many times before. Whatever nastiness you decide to put inside, it won’t come into contact with anything in the main compartment thanks to a layer of thick nylon that’s both highly water resistant and, in our experience, smell proof.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Top Pocket

The first quick-access pocket on the top is great for smaller items, like boarding passes, granola bars, hand wipes, or a laptop charger. There’s also an interior mesh pocket within this pocket! Far out. The two other quick-access ones on the front are both smaller than the one on the top and contain no other pockets within. That’s ok though, as they’re great for other things, like your passport, some medicine you may need quickly, or the book you’re reading.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Back Pocket and Key Clip

The final pocket is where you’ll find the laptop compartment. It’s padded and can hold a 15” laptop. There’s a decent-sized pocket within here, too, with a key clip sewed in. This key-clip detail is something Timbuk2 doesn’t list on the Wander Pack product page. Finding this detail was a nice little surprise. A designated place like this means less time digging through your pack for your car or house keys at the end of a long trip.

Stow-able Shoulder Straps on the Timbuk2 Wander Pack

Rounding out the features are a sternum strap, stowable shoulder straps, two side handles, and four compression straps. The shoulder straps can be unhitched from the bottom of the pack and stowed in a non-zipping back panel. Doing this converts the pack into a duffel bag. You can grab a meaty handle on either side to complete the look, though there is no shoulder strap for when you’re using it as a duffle. We find duffles more laborious to carry, so we prefer to use the Wander Pack as a backpack. Timbuk2 lists one additional feature, which they say is an “airmesh ventilated back panel.” That doesn’t seem like much of anything, which isn’t a negative. It’s just a typical back of a backpack.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Side Handle

Taking all these features into account, the Wander Pack is an impressive specimen. In practice, it did most everything just as well as we’d hope. First, all items were well held in place by the internal compression straps. Second, there were more than enough pockets and places to store what was packed. At no time did any of them seem unnecessary or superfluous; the shoe compartment was convenient and useful. And third, when the pack was compressed down with the four outside straps and put on, it felt good, looked sleek, and sat at a nice height on the back.

Where there is good, oftentimes there is something bad, and there are a couple of inescapable negatives about this pack. The first and most glaring is the absence of a hip belt. For a 40L backpack that on its own weights nearly 4lbs, not having one seems criminal, unless you’re packing very light. When the bag was fully packed for a two-week trip it weighed between 15 and 20lbs. Wearing the Wander Pack for any substantial amount of time at this weight wasn’t nice.

It’s unclear why one—or even the option for one—wasn’t included on this pack. One guess is that since Timbuk2 has traditionally been a company that’s made bags for people living in urban areas a hip belt isn’t a requirement they’ve had. The Wander Pack follows that urban influence, looking like a slick, modern, city-dwellers backpack. All that is fine, but if you’re going to market this as a “legitimate backpacking pack,” then some of those staple features are needed. Namely, a hip belt.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack | Strap Mechanism

A second issue we found when testing this pack is at random times, without any rhyme or reason, the shoulder straps would come unhitched from the pack. There were two or three times over the course of a week when the pack was picked up by the strap, only for it to come up and up and up without the backpack in tow, until finally, there it was. A prompt “what the f*ck” may have been uttered. The issue lies with the mechanism holding the straps to the body of the pack. It’s quite small and finicky. We’ve seen other users complain of this same problem, too. To have a backpack that loses its straps without warning isn’t great. Thankfully, this didn’t happen often enough where it became a serious problem, though the fact it happens at all left us scratching our heads, wondering how much Timbuk2 tested the Wander Pack before release.

Timbuk2 Wander Pack Sternum Straps

And finally, the sternum strap isn’t attached at all to the shoulder straps. Usually, these are be sewn or fastened onto the shoulder straps in some way that restricts the movement and provides easy access. That’s not the case here. These sternum straps flop around all over the place. If you don’t have it buckled, there’s nothing preventing gravity from taking them down towards the bottom of the shoulder straps. And if you want to clip the sternum strap when the pack is already on, good luck. Many times the sternum straps would fall so far down the shoulder straps they would become entwined or caught, making it very difficult and truly time consuming to bring them back up into position. Given the aforementioned issue about the shoulder straps coming undone at random times, it’s likely if you’re not careful one of the sternum straps will fall off the shoulder straps and you could very well lose one.

Taking these three issues into account, the Timbuk2 Wander Pack is still a great, great backpack. If they could go back to the drawing board and tweak these three little anomalies we found while testing it, this pack would really sing, better than it already does.

Our Verdict

Our analysis and test results.

Timbuk2 is an excellent manufacturer of messenger bags, and this one shows that they are still on top of their game.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag.

Performance Comparison

The Command is an excellent modern update by a traditional, iconic messenger bag manufacturer. It placed fourth overall, winning our Top Pick for Business Use, for its clever and useful electronic features, and the ease of use for travel.

If placed on a bag spectrum from briefcase to messenger, the Timbuk2 Command definitely leans more toward the briefcase design. It is very similar to the Mobile Edge ECO , but had improved security on the bike during our OGL Ride Test from its proprietary Timbuk2 removable cross strap.

The adjustable shoulder pad is very well designed. It is firm and supportive, and closes like a hot dog with Velcro around the strap, making it fast and easy to slide or place over the plastic adjustment buckles.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag has an excellent and highly adjustable...

The Command was still comfortable to tote around town even when loaded down with heavy books and electronics. Our only comfort issue was with the boxy shape. This bag does not conform as readily to your back, so it can feel more like a soft briefcase strapped to you back. For outstanding comfort, check out the unusual Outdoor Research Rangefinder , or the more classic messenger style bags, the Timbuk2 Classic or the Chrome Mini Metro .

Packing/Organization

The Command has one major feature that sets it apart from most messenger bags: the front buckles are not highly adjustable — they stretch only a little with elastic, with four clippable loops to choose from, giving it only about four inches of adjustability. This makes the bag function much more like a briefcase (it was hard to overstuff in our OGL Load Test) but keeps it sleek looking with a low profile for navigating crowded urban areas. In the Load Test, we found it easy to pack office supplies, but not our after-work gym clothes.

We loved the external "Napoleon" style pockets on the Command , easily accessible without opening the flap. The internal pockets are thoughtfully mapped out, providing a very clean organization scheme, especially for office/school supplies.

The tricot-lined floating pockets for sunglasses provide a smooth but durable surface for scratch-free storage.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the versatile, slick, incognito pockets on the front of the command.

This bag will accommodate your 15-inch laptop, but not your liter Nalgene bottle. The side mesh pocket was the only organizational feature that stood out as awkward — too small and too tight for most of our water bottles, but you might have luck with your small coffee mug…after it's empty.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag didn't carry workout clothes as easily as...

Electronics

The Command is an excellent choice for the business traveler. It has great padding for your electronics and features a clever zippered compartment that unzips three sides of the bag to fold out and lay your laptop flat, expediting your trip through security, and ensuring your laptop travels through the X-Ray machine safely padded.

The internal pockets are very well thought out for electronics organization, with plenty of space for cords, cables, a mouse, writing tools, etc. We liked that we could keep our laptop in its own sleeve on the back of the bag and stash our tablet in a zippered sleeve inside the main compartment, all of which were well padded and secure.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag and all of its excellent business travel...

The closest organizational rival for traveling with electronics is the Mobile Edge ECO , significantly less "dressy" or formal-looking, but one-third the price.

Ease of Use

Among the first unique things we noticed about this bag were the straps that cover the Velcro on the main flap. Seemingly silly at first, we found this to be indispensable for working in quiet places, and helped us to avoid embarrassment when arriving late to a meeting — no loud ripping noise as we open our bag in the hushed office! When not secured, the incognito Velcro flaps flop around and sometimes got in our way without an easy or obvious way to secure or stash them out of the way.

On our OGL Ride Test, this bag gained significant ride security from the removable cross strap, otherwise, it would have had less of an edge over the Mobile Edge ECO . The boxy design is inherently much less secure than the Timbuk2 Classic , as it doesn't mold and conform to your body.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag has velcro if you want it, or you can...

Timbuk2's proprietary quick adjust buckle and double looped strap method is much harder to use when wearing the bag over your right shoulder with a cross strap. It is designed much better for the left shoulder carry on the bike. The cross strap, while easier to use than both the Chrome Mini Metro and the Chrome Buran II , still mildly interferes with shoulder strap quick adjust buckle. Overall, the adjustment system was not one of our favorites. We got somewhat used to it, but it felt fiddley and over-engineered. For excellent adjustability, check out the Osprey Flapjack or the Outdoor Research Rangefinder .

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the types of adjustable buckles featured in this review.

The flap closure buckles are quite fiddly. You have to hook them through the sewn daisy chain on the front of the bag, and it can be a tight squeeze with little movement from the buckle which makes them harder to maneuver.

This bag was our favorite for urban and international travel. It is TSA compliant and features a pass-through strap on the back to slide and secure it over the handle of a rolling suitcase. It has a slim profile that is an advantage in busy subways.

Wear and Tear

The Command performed very well in our OGL Weather Test with all pockets keeping things dry through a heavy rain storm. The middle and back pockets were additionally protected, simply by their placement on the bottom or back side of the bag with the tester's body blocking some of the rain.

The bag is overall rugged and durable, and the materials maintained their sleek and professional look better even than the more matte fabrics used in the Timbuk2 Classic . We did notice that the slim profile made the bag bulge when we maxed out the capacity and put a strain on the zippers, which is a long (or short!) term durability issue.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag.

Volume/Weight Ratio

Weighing in at 2.9 lbs, the Command was not the heaviest in this review, but it was above the average weight, and on the lower end of our OGL Volume Test as well, with only 14 liters of functional capacity (not the 22 liters advertised). As a result, it scored next to last on our Volume/Weight Ratio metric.

timbuk2 command messenger messenger bag review - the command messenger bag held a lot for its slim design.

Best Applications

This is an excellent messenger bag for the urban professional who likes the features of a traditional messenger bag but needs more features for electronics, notebooks, binders, and padding and structure to keep things neat and organized when traveling between meetings, offices, or to the coffee shop for a change of scenery.

This is an exceptionally great bag for the frequent traveler, with additional features that help you breeze through security and roll through the airport comfortably with this back securely stashed on top of a rolling suitcase.

At $149, this bag is above the average cost of bags in this review, but with the sleek and durable fabrics (which still look clean and professional after a lot of use), as well as the thoughtful features for electronics and business supplies, this is likely worth the cost to keep your laptop, tablet, and documents neat and tidy through many travels and commuting situations.

The-Ultimate-Guide-to-the-Worlds-Best-Messenger-and-Shoulder-Bags

The Best Messenger Bags for Tech, Travel, and EDC (2023)

  • Buyers Guide

Backpacks are considered the carry comfort kings. Duffels are the gear haulers. But when it comes to access and agility, the best messenger bags and shoulder bags step up for their time to shine. For many users, crossbody bags are go-to choices for quick access to gear on the move. They also tend to draw people who want to carry smaller loads or shed unnecessary carry bulk. And they also tend to get the nod of approval in work settings, where in many cases they bring a more formal and professional feel to your work setup than a backpack.

Best messenger bags: WP Standard Vintage Leather Messenger Bag

Messengers vs shoulder bags

So you might have heard the terms ‘messenger’ and ‘shoulder bag’ used interchangeably. But they aren’t actually the same thing. Messengers tend to be associated with more active use (think bags used by bicycle messengers), while shoulder bags play well in sedate settings. Features such as stabilizer straps are more common in messengers (again, to assist in load stability during active use). And in general messengers will wrap round the body more (a rigid design isn’t great if you’re pounding the pedals during a bike ride or trying to move nimbly in outdoor environments). That doesn’t mean you can’t use messengers in less strenuous settings or find shoulder bags that will tackle a little adventure now and then.

So with all of that in mind, what is a good brand of messenger bag? We know it can be time-consuming to search through countless bag options. So we’re shouldering the load by rounding up some of the best messenger bags and shoulder bags to suit different needs and settings. But, hey, it’s worth noting most of the below bags cross categories. They’re not only suited to certain needs, but they’re versatile too. Win!

Key Considerations When Choosing Your Bag

Ultimately, a lot of factors come into play to determine where messengers and shoulder bags will excel. Check out these tips on what to look for when choosing your ideal shoulder or messenger bag.

If you need a splash of fashion with your function, you may be wondering, are messenger bags still cool? Of course they are! And are messenger bags unisex? For the most part, yes. But this incredibly popular carry category comes in a great variety of styles, colorways, and materials to cater to a wide range of tastes and needs. So to help you choose, it’s useful to think about where you’ll be using the bag.

Do you need it for work purposes? If so, is your work environment smart-casual or formal? In these cases, understated colorways like black, gray, navy, or tan will blend in better (no matter how much you may be digging that blazing orange, it’s best saved for after-work hours). Clean silhouettes or soft draping designs will also be easier to fit in formal environments than “busy” designs that draw the eye (but not for the right reasons). If you won’t be using the bag for work purposes (or your work environment is more laid-back), you’ve got a little more freedom in the style department. Yep, bring on that blazing orange…

United By Blue Lakeland Laptop Bag

Size and weight

Obviously your messenger or shoulder bag needs to be large enough to hold all the gear you need it to. But you’ll want to be careful here. The bigger the bag is, the more bulk you’ll be carrying around. Ask yourself if the added space is worth the increased weight and bulk penalty. Maybe you need it or really value the ability to accommodate a variety of loads from one day to the next. But if you tend to carry a set amount of gear, picking a bag that’s just big enough without adding unnecessary weight may be a better option.

For example, are messenger bags good for laptops? Some are much better suited to tech carry than others and will be sized accordingly to fit different devices. They may also have additional features such as padded sleeves that add to the bulk. Potentially increased size and bulk is a worthy trade-off if you regularly carry a laptop but unnecessary if you don’t.

So you’ve got a bag that’s the right size and suits your style, but how about getting to your gear? One of the key advantages of messengers and shoulder bags over other types of carry is the on-body access they provide. The ability to easily swing them round to your front to get to frequently used essentials or to access gear from the main compartment without having to remove the bag from your shoulder. Features such as quick-release shoulder straps, exterior pockets, magnetic or one-handed flap buckles, and multiple access points to the main compartment will help you get to gear in a jiffy.

Are you going to be putting your bag through the wringer on regular cycle commutes ? Shoving it in and out of overhead compartments or heading off into the wilderness for a day of exploring trails or outdoor photography? The more demanding you are on your bag, the tougher it will need to be. Abrasion-resistant and water-resistant materials along with trusty construction will help your bag cope when the going gets tough. Great for an EDC messenger bag that needs to endure demanding use or a travel messenger bag you can rely on to keep going strong. If your bag will be living a more relaxed or sheltered life, you can dial back on the durability, which may help you cut some weight.

Best Messenger Bags: Mission Workshop Monty Advanced

While shoulder bags and messengers don’t offer the same level of load distribution that backpacks do, they can still be comfortable to carry. Keep an eye out for a wide shoulder strap that will help spread the load a little, as well as padding on the strap to help enhance comfort. For more active use your chosen bag should offer good breathability in the back panel, a design that hugs the body, and a stabilizer strap or waist belt to help secure the load. And carry handles come in useful too when you want to give your shoulder a breather or are carrying the bag over shorter distances or in more formal environments.

The 11 best convertible backpack totes of 2024, tested and reviewed

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

If your closet is filled with bags hiding inside of other bags that rarely ever get used, it might be time to streamline your accessories. Instead of hanging on to multiple different bags for multiple different functions, why not opt for a more versatile pack that works for both commuting and traveling? That's where the backpack/tote hybrid comes in.

Backpacks that seamlessly transition into totes are a go-to staple if you need a multi-purpose bag that suits an on-the-go lifestyle. By having a few options on how to wear your bag, you can solve a lot of problems, from bulbous backpacks not fitting on crowded trains, to the one-sided shoulder strain of carrying a shoulder bag. A dual-purpose bag also makes for the perfect everyday and travel accessory, meaning your work bag can also moonlight as your new carry-on.

The best part? Some of these backpack and tote bag combos are so smartly designed, you can stow away straps when you're not using them or easily transition between different wears without having to detach or reattach anything. And to make things even easier, we've rounded up some of the best options out there so you're sure to find something that suits you.

Best overall

When it comes to travel-smart bags, there are few that are more cleverly designed than Lo & Son's Edgemont bag . This 15-liter capacity bag is incredibly versatile, coming with a removable insert that can fit a 13-inch laptop with two interior mesh pockets to comfortably house a water bottle or umbrella. Stash pockets on the side allow for discreet-yet-easily accessible spots to keep passports, documents, or your phone, while a handy and detachable key ring makes sure your keys stay on you. The best part? The minimalist bag is made from eco-friendly materials like high-density polyester created from plastic bottles.

When we reviewed the Lo & Sons Edgemont, we were absolutely obsessed with how well it works for travel. Its size fits perfectly under airline seats, while the suitcase sleeve allows you to hook the bag on top of your carry-on so you can wheel it around the airport. The extra comfy straps that transition between a backpack and a tote are also padded with memory foam, so you never feel any discomfort, no matter how stressful travel gets.

Best budget

If you're in a rush to find a versatile travel bag at a decent price, the CYUREAY Convertible Backpack is an excellent option. Coming in at just under $30, this Amazon favorite comes with a USB charging port stored inside the bag, allowing you to charge your phone on-the-go. The water-resistant fabric means you can bring this pack along with you during unpredictable weather, while the large internal capacity allows you to travel with everything you need, including a laptop as large as 15.6-inches. Shoulder straps are reinforced with padding to ensure comfort when you go into backpack mode. There's even a suitcase strap on the back so you can easily slide your bag onto your carry-on as you breeze through the airport.

Best for work

The perfect work bag needs to be both stylish and functional, especially during longer commutes, and the Aurora by KREYA is just that. If you're on the go, and need to quickly transition your backpack into a tote, just pull on the X-shaped handles to seamlessly transform your backpack straps into a bag handle. Then, when your arm gets tired and it's time to distribute the weight of your bag more evenly, pull down on your straps to carry it as a backpack.

In addition to its sleek leather design, the Aurora features a main zippered compartment that can comfortably fit a 14-inch laptop. An interior pocket makes the perfect home for your cell phone, or you can store your phone in the exterior pocket to reach it with ease. Metal snaps on the side of the bag help it to expand when you're carrying a bit extra. It even comes with a carefully crafted dust bag for storage so your leather stays clean and supple.

Best for travel

At the top of our list is the Vapor Convertible Tote Backpack because it's sustainably made and functions incredibly well as both a tote bag and a backpack. Padded backpacks straps make for comfortable carrying and stow away easily into an exterior back pocket. Ready to go from tote-mode to backpack-mode again? The tote straps, which are the perfect length for shoulder wear, stow away seamlessly in the same pocket.

Because the pack is made from eco-friendly, hard-wearing materials like recycled nylon fibers, it's bound to last for years, even if you always take advantage of its spacious 18-liter capacity. But with the extensive interior comes a variety of smartly designed compartments to ensure all the gear you pack with you never gets lost. A hidden external zip pocket makes for easy access to items you want to keep concealed, while two tri-cut lined interior slip pockets house valuables like your phone, sunglasses, or Airpods without scratching them. Within the main interior compartment you'll find a padded laptop sleeve that can fit laptops and tablets up to 15 inches long, along with all of your other necessities. The totepack even meets TSA standards for carry-ons, so it makes for the perfect travel bag as well.

Best splurge

Why compromise on style when opting for versatility when you can have both? When we reviewed The Senreve Maestra Bag , we found that this somewhat pricey bag is absolutely worth the price. It is effortlessly sleek and fashion-forward, made with 100% leather in both pebbled and long-grain finishes, featuring a smooth suede interior. With the structured, water-repellent exterior comes plenty of compartments on the interior featuring eight different places to store your valuables including a padded laptop compartment, a hidden back compartment, and several small side pockets.

The Maestra Bag takes that versatility a step further with four possible ways to style the bag – it can be worn as a tote, crossbody, satchel, or backpack, depending on your mood. While the top features a flap and the Maestra's signature studded belt closure, the bag also has an interior zipper to keep all your belongings safe.

Most stylish

Speaking of sleek, streamlined style, if you're looking to make a statement at the office or during your commute, reach for the Cole Haan Grand Ambition Convertible Backpack. Made with pebbled leather which is known for being more scratch-resistant, this structured bag can be worn as a backpack, crossbody bag, or shoulder bag by adjusting the leather straps. A large front pocket helps you access your items quickly while a zippered back compartment keeps valuables hidden.

On the interior, you'll find a water-resistant lining featuring a separate, padded laptop sleeve along with a larger main compartment and several smaller pockets to house items like your phone or e-reader. The bag also comes with a dust bag to store it and keep it clean on the days you're not showing it off.

Best on Amazon

Tote Pack is no different. Coming in at under $60, this bag can carry a day's-worth of items whether you're traveling or hiking, thanks to its 13-liter capacity. The main zippered compartment features a dedicated laptop sleeve that can fit a computer up to 16 inches in length, while the exterior features two smaller zippered pockets to store items like your phone. You can feel confident that your pack is also made from sustainable materials, with the pack's outer fabric created from a durable and water-repellant recycled nylon that gives the bag its vintage feel.

Best leather

Italian-made luxury meets effortless versatility with the M. Gemi Laura Convertible Backpack. Made from supple tumbled calf leather, the bag's slouchy silhouette offers a touch of style and is roomy enough to fit a laptop, cosmetics bag, water bottle, and any of your other essentials. Inside you'll find a lightweight, linen lining along with a zippered compartment to keep valuables hidden and two open pockets for easy access.

The best part of this bag, however, is how easily it can transition between a backpack and a tote: simply pull up on the straps when you want to wear it on your shoulder, or pull down on both side straps to convert it into a backpack.

Best for school

There's no need to choose between a backpack or tote for the school year when the Timbuk2 Scholar Convertible Tote Backpack allows you to have both. Designed for the needs of students, this bag features adjustable backpack straps that tuck away into your pack when you want to transition into tote-mode.

The exterior has two zippered pockets, one bigger and one smaller, to fit a variety of necessities you need quick access to. Dual side pockets are perfect for toting around your water bottle, umbrella, or both, while the larger interior compartment comes with an internal slip pocket that can house a 13-inch laptop. With the 900D recycled polyester exterior, you can be sure that this bag is durable enough to last the whole academic year.

If sustainably made accessories are your priority, opt for the Sherpani Soleil AT Bag. The incredibly durable, water-resistant fabric has been made from 40 repurposed plastic bottles, with all the featured detailing made from vegan leather. The bag is also lightweight and features a removable strap that can be adjusted to tote- or crossbody-length, in addition to the bag's two backpack straps.

There are few unique safety features that come with this bag that make it a handy travel essential. A chair-lock loop at the back of the bag allows you to attach your bag to your chair for added security. The main compartment also has a clip lock to prevent valuables from being stolen. For even more security, the bag has been designed with an anti-slash fabric at the bottom and on the main strap, so you can feel confident your belongings will remain concealed.

Best water-repellant

For a weather-resistant pack made for both travel and outdoor activities, we recommend the Kånken Totepack by Fjallraven. Made from a combination of organic cotton, recycled polyester, and hard-wearing Vinylon F fabric, the backpack tote combo is water-resistant, wind-resistant, and quick-drying if you get caught in a sudden downpour. The bag also features webbed straps that convert easily from a tote to a backpack without the need for reattachment. There's even a shorter top handle for quick grab-and-go access.

As far as compartments go, this totepack has a main zippered compartment fitted with an internal laptop sleeve pocket that can fit a computer up to 13 inches in length. On the exterior, you also have a smaller zippered front pocket for easy access to your items, along with two open side pockets for water bottles or umbrellas. The most unique feature, however, is the removable seat pad you can find stored in the main compartment, so you can take a break wherever you are.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
